Exactly ten years ago today, on July 28th, 2012, Placebo went on a short ๐๐Ÿ‘ ๐“๐Ž๐”๐‘, almost three months before their same-titled EP would be released in October 2012.
All in all, 18 concerts, including the festival shows, were planned for the tour. The first one took place on July 28th at ๐‘ณ๐’๐’˜ ๐‘ช๐’๐’”๐’• ๐‘ญ๐’†๐’”๐’•๐’Š๐’—๐’‚๐’ in ๐‘บ๐’‘๐’‚๐’Š๐’.

Not everything went smoothly during this tour (as at ๐‘ญ๐’“๐’†๐’’๐’–๐’†๐’๐’„๐’š ๐‘ญ๐’†๐’”๐’•๐’Š๐’—๐’‚๐’ in Austria on August 16th when the show was stopped after the first song). However, Placebo managed to play several brilliant concerts which would be always remembered by the fans as true highlights of the band’s live history.

“Next, we race back to the main stage in order to catch Placebo who are armed with new material in the form of ‘B3’ alongside the now “classic” body of work that they’ve perfected. Their energy is infectious, and it’s good to see them headlining such a credible festival bill (they’ve done it before, here too). Tonight at Sziget, it is very easy to see just how Placebo have been able to graduate from snotty androgynous punks to an internationally recognised and celebrated rock legends. This is signified in the set as well; the band leave out tracks like ‘Nancy Boy’ in favour of the (arguably) more mature (and polished) ‘Infra-Red’ to close things off. Again, it’s just obvious that this band have grown up and developed, and in our opinion that’s no bad thing.”

By the way, on that day Placebo shared the festival scene with the Belgian band ๐๐„๐”๐’ whom ๐‘ฉ๐’“๐’Š๐’‚๐’ called one of his favourite bands and also his personal friends.

“They were THE headliner on Friday. Only a few shows this year in Germany, and one of them at Taubertal. Huge expectations have met the fullest satisfaction. Brian Molko, singer and guitarist and frontman of the band, was fashionably polite during the 90-minute set. In good understandable German he addressed the ladies with “Remember Me” - before Special Needs from the Sleeping With Ghosts album. We will definitely not forget Placebo. The lightshow with five screens above the stage was amazing and perfectly contributed alternative rock by Placebo. As previous albums of the Brits were represented, as so the new album sounded very good.
The release of Battle For The Sun was a great return after a three-year hiatus. The version of Kate Bush’s Running Up That Hill was just fantastic as one of four encores.”

“Although it may be difficult to find a link between the Californian rapper (Snoop Dogg) and Placebo, festivals are there to make communication possible just because the fans of both artists have fun in front of the stage together. And Placebo fans had a lot to write home about. An hour and a half of music by the band in absolutely peak form. Brian Molko has lost nothing of his magnetic charisma and kept a perfect feel of the stage. Steve Forrest, the percussionist who joined the band four years ago, clearly managed to find ground under his feet and now feels entirely confident in the company of Placebo founders. The concert opened with Kitty Litter from the still popular Battle for the Sun, the album most extensively represented during the show, but they also had surprises in store, such as, for example, I Know from their debut album or Meds, originally performed with Alison Mosshart. The second part of the concert started with Running Up That Hill from the repertoire of Kate Bush. Interestingly, just an hour earlier, the song played an important role during the closing ceremony of the Olympic Games. Alongside this cover and pieces like Infra-Red and Post Blue, the encores featured the band's only new piece – B3.”

๐ŸŽถ”๐—ฆ๐—”๐—— ๐—ช๐—›๐—œ๐—ง๐—˜ ๐—ฅ๐—˜๐—š๐—š๐—”๐—˜”๐ŸŽถ

”๐—ฆ๐—”๐—— ๐—ช๐—›๐—œ๐—ง๐—˜ ๐—ฅ๐—˜๐—š๐—š๐—”๐—˜” is a song from “Never let me go” which was released on March 25th 2022. It was Placebo's eight studio album and produced by Adam Noble who was also the producer of the previous record “Loud like love” (2013). “Sad White Reggae”, like all other tracks on the album, was recorded at RAK Studios in London, UK, and mastered at 24-96 Mastering in Karlsruhe, Germany.

What's different about “Never let me go” is the process how it came into being because everything was done in reverse order to the usual way of working. The song titles were chosen before the lyrics were written, the work on the record started with the album artwork and picking the cover photo instead of ending with those decisions. Stefan explained that Brian came to him with that idea to try to do everything backwards. “So, there were a few factors in starting this record that were a little bit different. And I think we needed that. I mean, the end result might still sound very much like a Placebo record” (Chaos, March 4th 2022).
Brian: “This process of renewal, of looking for something new, is imperative for me, I really don't want to be bored with Placebo. You have to really push yourself to find different methods, challenging situations, things to say that you find important, to basically do something that feeds you, because without that self-feeding, why would you do that? I would ask myself that question all the time” (France Info, March 30th 2022).

๐Ÿ“ ๐™„๐™ฃ๐™ฉ๐™š๐™ง๐™š๐™จ๐™ฉ๐™ž๐™ฃ๐™œ ๐™›๐™–๐™˜๐™ฉ: Placebo once did something similar with “Infra-Red” from the album “Meds” when Brian wrote the lyrics of the song backwards. He admitted that because of that he first had no idea what “Infra-Red” was about. “I started with the last line and worked my way to the first. I’d never done that before. So it wasn’t until I got to the first line that I was able to take a step back and understand what it was about” (Suicide Girls, May 14th 2006).

Different to the previous albums Brian and Stefan also started to work on “Never let me go” without a drummer. “We wanted to make an album without drums and just do it with a drum machine and that has influenced the process a little bit. [...] And just having those beginnings a little bit different from the previous records, the result is very different from all the last records. I don't know, but it was important to incite to make the journey a little bit different”, Stefan explained in an interview with Alfa 91,3 FM Mexico. But in the end they even had two drummers instead of none at all: Matt Lunn, who is a touring member of the band and first joined them in 2004, and Pietro Garrone of Husky Loops.

Brian said that “Sad White Reggae” was written during a period of insomnia. In the middle of the night he decided to play something by The Police but ended up writing his own song (see quotes below). He stated that the title is a private joke for him. The song includes references to Jane Birkin, Samye Ling and Lama Yeshe, Dundee and Brian's mother.

๐Ÿ“๐—ฆ๐—ฎ๐—บ๐˜†๐—ฒ ๐—Ÿ๐—ถ๐—ป๐—ด is a Buddhist monastery in Scotland. On the band's Instagram page Brian posted this text in 2021: “My friend and teacher ๐—Ÿ๐—ฎ๐—บ๐—ฎ ๐—ฌ๐—ฒ๐˜€๐—ต๐—ฒ etablished the first Buddhist monastery in Europe, Samye Ling, Scotland. It is now under threat from US army. Please help us protect the monastery by signing this petition. And album8 is most deginitely on its way!”
Explanation: The military wanted to use the area for target practice. – The petition was successful and the place was safe in the end.

๐Ÿ“๐—๐—ฎ๐—ป๐—ฒ ๐—•๐—ถ๐—ฟ๐—ธ๐—ถ๐—ป is an English-French singer and actress who Brian admires. She is best known for her releationship with Serge Gainsbourg and their scandalous duet “Je t'aime moi non plus” which Brian and Asia Argento covered for Dimitri Tikovoi's music project Trash Palace in 2002. Two years later Brian recorded a song called “Smile” with Birkin, it was released on her album “Rendez-vous”.

๐Ÿ“ “Sad White Reggae” is not the first song that has a ๐ซ๐ž๐Ÿ๐ž๐ซ๐ž๐ง๐œ๐ž ๐ญ๐จ ๐๐ซ๐ข๐š๐ง'๐ฌ ๐ฆ๐จ๐ญ๐ก๐ž๐ซ in the lyrics. There's also “Blue American” from the 2000 album “Black market music”. Amongst others it include the line “I wrote this novel just for Mom / For all the mommy things she's done”.

๐Ÿ“ ๐——๐˜‚๐—ป๐—ฑ๐—ฒ๐—ฒ is a coastal city in Scotland where Brian partly grew up. Despite the fact that he had to move a lot with his family when he was young he also once said that if he were to have some patriotic feelings it would be for this place.

“Sad White Reggae” is part of the current tour. The shared video was recorded at Bearded Theory's Spring Gathering festival on May 27th 2022. This song is one of my absolute favorites on the new album and also live.

๐Ÿ“ข "A lot of these songs were written during periods of insomnia and 'Sad White Reggae' is one of them. It's about three o'clock in the morning. Can't sleep. And for some reason I decided I was going to work out how to play Roxanne by The Police, and I couldn't and I ended up writing this song instead. And because I was trying to copy The Police I called it, 'Sad White Reggae' because that's essentially what the first two Police albums is. It's just 'Sad White Reggae', so it's a little in-joke for me, private joke, which kind of makes its way onto the album. That's my song for Scotland. I think Dundee is going to give me the key to the city when this record comes out. I managed to get Jane Birkin, Lama Yeshe, and my mum into the same song and Dundee. "

I communicate big ideas in a few words as possible.“

I got the man on the way
I wanna sleep on the way down
So many miles away
I used to dance in a fountain

I got the man on the way
Measure for measure
So many miles away
Drunk on a mountain

I got a message for Jane
Float on a feather
I hope the kids are okay
Now for the kicker

I'm stuck on a train
Heading for Scotland
They took my mom away
Illuminati

And I'm thin as rake
I'm no longer fleshy
I'll go to Samye Ling
See Lama Yeshe

Where the skies are grey
And the skies are cloudy
And every river flows
Back to Dundee

I won't give into the pain
I'll smile in the mirror
There's no one else to blame

Collapse into never, collapse into never
Collapse into never, collapse into never
Collapse into never, collapse into never
Collapse into never, collapse into never
Collapse into never, collapse into never
Collapse into never, collapse into never

๐ŸŸชOne of the most heartbreaking moments on the album, ๐‡๐€๐๐๐˜ ๐๐ˆ๐‘๐“๐‡๐ƒ๐€๐˜ ๐ˆ๐ ๐“๐‡๐„ ๐’๐Š๐˜ has already become – surprisingly or not – an obvious festival hit.
Alongside three other singles from ๐๐ž๐ฏ๐ž๐ซ ๐‹๐ž๐ญ ๐Œ๐ž ๐†๐จ, it’s been included into the setlists of almost all concerts so far. Although, I suppose, it sounded a bit differently in the atmosphere of the very first intimate shows and in front of the huge crowds at the festival stages.

Above, I’m sharing a video from ๐“๐– ๐‚๐ฅ๐š๐ฌ๐ฌ๐ข๐œ ๐…๐ž๐ฌ๐ญ๐ข๐ฏ๐š๐ฅ in ๐–๐ž๐ซ๐œ๐ก๐ญ๐ž๐ซ, ๐๐ž๐ฅ๐ ๐ข๐ฎ๐ฆ where Placebo played last Saturday, on June 25th (watch it to the very end๐Ÿ’ฅ

๐ŸŸชWhen explaining where the lyrics, full of genuine grief and despair, come from, ๐‘ฉ๐’“๐’Š๐’‚๐’ mostly goes two directions. He speaks of someone who lost their loved ones to murder, particularly, to police brutality keeping in mind events which led to the Black Lives Matter movement. Another, more personal meaning, is connected to David Bowie’s passing which left Brian enormously devastated back in the day and definitely still influences him.

๐Ÿ“ข๐๐ซ๐ข๐š๐ง: I don’t write songs dedicated to other people, but if I did, this song would be dedicated to someone who had their true love killed. It was inspired by the murders of black people by the police in the United States, something we were already aware of several years before the death of George Floyd.
Then the song became more abstract for me, based more upon my current relationship with David Bowie: his spirit, his influence on me as a person and his constant guidance.

To me Happy Birthday In The Sky...I have to kind of in order to get inside a song I kind of I create a narrative that's, that's my own, and I create characters, and what I did in this one is that I tried to put myself in the shoes of somebody who lost a loved one to police brutality. So it was a mixture of Bowie's passing and what was happening in the news.

David Bowie’s death on January 10, 2016, two days after his 69th birthday and the release of final studio album Blackstar, certainly left its mark on the members of Placebo. The aching Happy Birthday In The Sky, while not exclusively about that particular loss, pays tribute to those whose birthdays we continue to mark even after they have passed, as ๐‘ฉ๐’“๐’Š๐’‚๐’ does with his late hero. “It communicates that kind of heartbreak,” he explains. “That sense of loss. That sense of desperation. It’s as if a part of your body and soul has been ripped from you unfairly. And you pine – and you pine.”

๐ŸŸชHowever, let me delicately guess that there might be much more personal background to the lyrics, especially remembering the self-explanatory line from Chemtrails, “My friends and relatives are gone / And I need a little time”.
We will never know whose passing was (also) breakiing Brian’s heart when he wrote Happy Birthday In The Sky, who he remembers of every time while performing the song on stage… And there’s no need to search for those answers๐Ÿ™
It’s just an absolutely natural human thing… Too many of us can think of those to whom we wish a happy birthday in the sky every single year… and will probably do that to the end of our lives…๐Ÿ’”

๐Ÿ“ข๐๐ซ๐ข๐š๐ง: Happy Birthday In The Sky for me, is one of the more heartbreaking moments on the album. Happy Birthday In The Sky is a phrase that I've been using, you know, for quite some time. When I say, happy birthday to people who aren't with us anymore, you know, like David Bowie, for example, and it communicates the kind of heartbreak that we're really, really good at communicating, I think, you know, that that sense of loss, that sense of desperation. It's as if a part of your body and your soul has been ripped from you unfairly. And you pine and you pine and you wait.
I have a certain amount of drama training, you know, from Goldsmiths College, which is sort of the method, you know, so that it tells you to act from the inside out. So you start with really, really personal things and you externalise them. That’s how I manage to kind of communicate this emotion. I think truthfully and honestly to an audience, by somewhat inhabiting that feeling by putting myself in that position when it's performed and feeling the heartbreak. Concerts that come across as mechanical are ones where I find myself unable to do that, to inhabit the emotion within the song. I do that a lot during performance and put I put myself in the shoes of the narrator emotionally, which can be really draining and I think a lot of people don't understand why I wouldn't want to go to an after show party or I wouldn't want to go to a discotheque after the show when all I want is some food and to collapse, because I've basically given everything I can emotionally and there's nothing left. I'm just an empty shell. You kind of inhabit these difficult emotions 12, 13, 15, 20 times a night.
What I am thinking is that this is kind of so visceral and so intense emotionally that it's really going to communicate something very powerful to the listener. And that's basically all I'm interested in. At what cost? Who cares. As long as the song really, really moves people, then whatever sacrifices you have to make in order to get there are fine with me or that you will continue to make in the future. It's not such a bad thing to inhabit these emotions, you're very, very much alive and in the moment while you're doing them.

Both a springboard for young talents and a stage for headliners, Palรฉo has gradually opened up to all musical styles, as well as to the circus and street arts.

๐Ÿ”ธ The very first edition took place in 1976 with 1800 spectators in the old town hall of Nyon. The following year, in 1977, the Festival moved to the open air and was held in Colovray. Since 1990, the Palรฉo has taken up residence on the emblematic site of l'Asse, north of Nyon.

๐Ÿ”ธ From the 1800 spectators at the beginning to some 230000 in recent years, the Palรฉo has had many unforgettable moments, starting with the concerts. Miles Davis in 1990 or Bob Dylan as a surprise guest in 1995 on the new Dรดme stage. Since then, the most incredible artists have played on the plaine of l'Asse, such as Placebo, Muse, Patti Smith, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Iron Maiden, Elton John, Pink, Sting, Joan Baez, Bjรถrk or The Cure. And if the weather has sometimes been a nuisance, it has also offered some anthology moments, like Neil Young performing in torrential rain, in 2013 as in 1993 ! Against all odds, Palรฉo continues to write its history of musical passion, year after year.

๐Ÿ”ธ For the 2006 edition where ๐‘ท๐’๐’‚๐’„๐’†๐’ƒ๐’ was present on July 22,, the festival director himself used a wine-lover's metaphor when he described this edition as a "great vintage".

๐Ÿ’ฌ Yes, completely. We've had a very positive path in our career. We're getting to headline more and more festivals. Our music always touches people, which we really appreciate. We started out touring England in a crappy little bus. ๐Ÿ’ฌ The album was recorded much more live than the previous ones. So it's much easier to play on stage. The previous album, Sleeping With Ghosts, was done on computers. We spent more time in front of screens than actually playing. This can lead to a tendency to overthink what you're doing. Meds is a kind of reaction to that. Our producer, Dimitri Tikovoi, has a lot to do with it. He encouraged us to play instinctively. We felt that the songs were strong enough to stand up without technological tricks. It's a return to the basic Placebo instrumentals that we had on the first few albums. Going into the studio with songs not quite finished, you don't necessarily know what their identity will be at the end of the process. They didn't need to be overproduced in the end. The album was recorded fairly quickly, in four months.

๐Ÿ’ฌ I think the dark side comes from the fact that it's very positive for us to have music as an outlet. A lot of people have problems, some go to a shrink, others drown in alcohol or drugs. Music has allowed us to be able to manage our lives. We can analyze, express our dark sides. We did make a happier song, I Do, which is on the singles compilation. It's not something that puts us off... Life is full of so many different emotions... We just want to write music that we like and be honest with ourselves. If we have an emotional connection with our music, people will feel it. If we fake it, they will feel it too.

๐Ÿ’ฌ We don't think about it too much. We've always done things our own way, without anyone interfering with our artistic vision. It seems to work and that's good. I don't know how long it will last... The music is so personal... In the studio we really withdraw from the world. We don't listen to music, we don't think about pleasing anyone but ourselves. We are very critical and we want to do better with every album. The day we have nothing more to say, we will stop... We are ambitious, we want to be the biggest rock band in the world and we work very hard for that...

But when you reach a certain level, you realize that you can go even higher. You're never satisfied. We haven't written our best song yet... There are always desires that push us to continue. That's why we're still here...

๐Ÿ”ดCONCERT REVIEW BY A FAN๐Ÿ”ด

Dear friends and Placebo lovers,

for all those who have not yet had the pleasure of attending one of Placebo's concerts on this new 2022 tour, we share with you the concert review our soulmate Gaรซlle Fuchs kindly sent to us.
It's about the last Placebo concert on May 27th at Bearded Theory's Spring Gathering festival, Derbyshire, UK.
Enjoy it!

Your Placebo Anyway Team

“This gig felt like the first normal Placebo gig after the small ones and the stadium openings.

They seemed in a very good mood, Brian making jokes along the way and Stef playing with the different sides of the crowd to make them scream louder.

They also kept making us clap and sign of a good gig: "It's in the special way we fuck" very loud during Post Blue.

The setlist was a mix of the past 2 setlists with, very sadly, One Of A Kind missing...

I had a lot of fun dancing and singing and loved it, also to note, the return of the beanie! It was pretty cold when they played.

To say "Hi" to the audience Brian used the classic "Look at all the people here tonight" which was fun.

He introduced Kitty Litter by making a joke about it being one of his favourite thing to eat and suddenly out of nowhere between 2 songs said "I can smell weed".

They also paid tribute to Fletch from Depeche Mode, saying they woke up with very sad sudden news this week and that Fletch was a close friend who was a very genuine and kind person. They dedicated "Went Missing" to him.

I tried to be quick at taking 3 pictures during Hugz (probably took me 10 seconds max) but the girl next to me kept filming/taking pictures.

So at some point Brian pointed at her and asked her if she could stop because it was putting him off. Which made me laugh, so I got a "I saw you too" from Brian as punishmentoops.

To be honest, if he had taken Hugz of the setlist (which I really don't like) I probably would not have taken any pics.

Conclusion: better setlist Brian, thanks. Anyway my personal highlights were to have Sad White Reggae back on the setlist and the incredible energy they had and my down points where to have Hugz, Too Many Friends and Try Better Next Time in the set.”

The most played song during this tour was “Nancy Boy”, followed by “Teenage Angst” and “Bruise Pristine”. You can find the average concert setlist below.
Interesting fact: The Placebo tour was the only time that the Smith cover “Bigmouth strikes again” was played live, but it was performed only once at a show in Wolverhampton, UK.

Dear soulmates,
Placebo's new album is out. We are happy to publish all new interviews, all reviews.
Today, however, I had a great need to go back in time and remember Placebo's beginning.
I found a beautiful Stefan's interview from 1997, which is worth sharing just because of the last two sentences.

"Brian created most of our songs to start with, sitting at home, writing and singing. Now sound checks and rehearsals are where our creating is mostly done. Sometimes you can sit at home, get an idea and bring it to the band, but mostly it's a complete band effort. "One Big Evil Dildo", the band's live encore track, came out of a sound check in East Germany. "My favourite song is `I.Q'," he comments. "I just think it's the most dynamic and beautiful - musically and melodically. It has a toy piano in there - and it's my best playing as well. The thing with a three-piece is it forces you to get into your instrument a lot more. It's a very triangular thing, and Brian's guitar playing and my bass playing tend to work hand in hand. I'm not a big fan of the big, fat E-string. I find that it can be a bit boring. There's much more you can do with the bass; there are some really nice tonal qualities to it. I'm approaching bass now to take it somewhere new; I'm playing it more like a guitar in someways."

"Ideally, I always want Placebo to be more about the music, but you can't help what people want to hear and want to know. Brian looks a certain way and if we're portraying stuff in more than one way then thats fine." just under one year after their first gig, Placebo secured a deal with Hut records, followed shortly by the birth of their own record label Elevator Music.

"Our own record label allows us, basically, to get the ultimate deal. For us it is best to have our own label, as we plan to release different side products in the future. What you see is only part of Placebo. Long term, I'd like to see longevity, because this is what we live and breathe: what we get up in the morning for. We want to write that perfect song."

So - what do you think? Have the guys written the perfect song yet? Something like U2 "With or Without You"?
Is there such a song on the new album?
Anyway, today we can end with pure Placebo energy, which is real hardcore.
I'm talking about the song ๐„๐ฏ๐ข๐ฅ ๐ƒ๐ข๐ฅ๐๐จ from WYIN album and its live performance from the ´รŸ.

Remember last year's "Lost Tapes" gift from the band? Amazing gig, don't you think?

Interesting fact - the song Evil Dildo was played live 38 times.
First played November 4, 1996 at Le 400, Bordeaux, France, most recently played July 13, 1999 at Rockwave Festival.

๐Ÿ“Œ The story behind the song is that Brian forgot to take his name out of the phonebook after the first Placebo album was realeased and there was a message on his answer machine with a sort of Steven Hawking voice.
It's a quiet creepy song.

It's interesting, however, that the similar lyrics as from Brian's answering machine are used in a song by Irish musician ๐€๐ฉ๐ก๐ž๐ฑ ๐“๐ฐ๐ข๐ง - ๐…๐ฎ๐ง๐ง๐ฒ ๐‹๐ข๐ญ๐ญ๐ฅ๐ž ๐Œ๐š๐ง from the Come To Daddy, which was released in 1997.

Definitely worth it.

Anyway, Brian handled the threats on his answering machine brilliantly. Using this nightmare in this song with such a crazy title is a great idea.

๐‘ฉ๐’“๐’Š๐’‚๐’ : Festivals, they're like a big picnic. But they're also like walking a tightrope in the way that anything that can go wrong, will go wrong. But you also spend a lot of time in a field beforehand. there's a certain amount of less pressure in one way but then there's more pressure as well because there's more people and you don't have a soundcheck, etc. So it's not that you don't take it as seriously, that if something goes wrong, that it's not the end of the world, that you're on a bill with x amount of people and that things will probably go wrong for them too. So you just smile about it. It's a bit more fun.

From the intro with Scared on Girls, the tone is set: no frills, just brilliant songs executed with no hesitation. The faster tempo is the only thing that differentiates these live versions from their studio counterparts, but it makes a big difference. The first six tracks follow one another without a break, the time to hit a few larsens as an introduction, Allergic, or to listen to the constant "Briaaann-neuh !" of the swooning girls after each track. The climax of this first third of the concert is reached with the classic double effect 'Kill Kool' from Placebo (the album), 36 degrees / Bionic, killer songs that have not aged at all. After a groovy break with a well-chosen B-side, Drowing by Numbers, and the poignant Without You I'm Nothing, the concert starts again, Placebo picking from the most efficient songs of their repertoire Every You Every Me, Slackerbitch. Not yet inflicting his pseudo-demagogic speeches on his audience, Brian Molko is relatively sober, with a magnificent: "I gave myself a microphone shot and now I'm bleeding for you." After a less obvious track, Lady of the Flowers, as a breather, Placebo ends in the most beautiful way with a very well served Nancy Boy by Stefan Olsdal's bass and my favourite track, Pure Morning, a nice summary of each band member's know-how. Finally, it ends with an apocalyptic live version of Evil Dildo, the hidden instrumental track from Without You I'm Nothing. These nine deafening minutes prove that Placebo's desire to play was furious in their early days. And so much the better if the audience in Belfort could finish their concert on this concentrated rock, it will have been the final touch to an almost ideal setlist.

Five years after their debut, Placebo is still not jaded, and you can feel the rage in the chorus of "You Don't Care About Us" as well as the true sincerity in the interpretation of "Teenage Angst". A band that was able to crystallize teenage feelings so well was bound to disappear quickly or to lose its passionate urgency over time.

Since 1989, the festival has brought together nearly 2 813 000 festival-goers from all walks of life, of all ages and of all nationalities in almost 2000 concerts ! Located on the Malsaucy peninsula, a few kilometers from Belfort in a protected natural area, festival-goers not only enjoy a wide variety of concerts, but also benefit from an exceptional natural setting: hills and water. The campsite accommodates 15,000 tents over 4 days. A combination of nature and music that promises great memories for the audience !

๐ŸŽธ It's our ping pong table yeah. While we were making Black Market Music, there was a ping pong room next door to the studio and we got obsessed with ping pong. So we decided to buy our own and take it on tour with us. But there's not much space here and we don't really get the chance to do it at festivals, you know. When we play our own gigs, we set it up every day and have a few games you know beforehand just to keep you from getting tired and keep you from getting bored.

๐ŸŽธ Well you just have to learn and realize and be okay with the fact that festivals by nature are completely chaotic and that nobody really gets a chance to test anything beforehand. So everything by nature is going to be more sloppy. So in a way that places a little less pressure upon you so you learn to let things go a little bit more you know.

๐ŸŽธ Yeah, i mean it's far less precise you know. The nature of the context is much different because the audience isn't necessarily 100 yours you know. So there's an extra challenge in that to keep people's attention but also you know the whole situation is different. So you have to have a different attitude, it's a completely different context.

๐ŸŽธ It's something that's quite fun really you know because you get to hang out with other bands, you get to see people that you haven't seen in a while. Four years ago, we were playing here with Therapy you know, and we're playing here again you know it's kind of funny. So it's more like you know the season of sitting in the grass you know and kind of and just hanging out more and then it's like: "oh right, okay" it's time it's time to go play now.

Because we worked very very hard on being concentrated and being focused and being very tight. I think people pay good money to come see you you know, and ticket prices keep going up and up you know, so it's like you really have to give them value for money, you really have to deliver you know, otherwise they can walk away feeling ripped off you know. But whatever you do, there's always people who walk away feeling ripped off or you just go on your site the next day and like people just complain and complain and complain you know. Every now and again, you have one or two many drinks before you go on stage and you're a little bit sloppy and then you go on the web the next day, and they go: "Man, he was drunk, man if i saw him i would have kicked his ass man but still they're my favorite bands.". It's like: "Wait a minute". People can be so demanding sometimes you know, we're just human beings.

๐ŸŽธ Yeah, luckily we don't really suffer from writer's block so when we have the opportunity, we try and write as much as possible on tour. Because if you don't, then you stop being creative for a really long period of time and then you start to feel like a performing monkey, it's important to keep your creative juices flowing and we try and do that. So we've always kind of continually written you know which is a good thing.

It takes a long time you know to come down off touring you know. It's like if you have two weeks holiday, it just doesn't work you know because it takes you a week or two to come down anyway you know. I think Michael Stipe once told me that after the new adventures in High Five Tour that it took him about four months to come down, you know. So you have a tendency to run around like a chicken with your head cut off or you just hit massive post-tour depression and you just don't know what to do, and you want to throw yourself under a bus you know. Because you feel so useless, because your life isn't organized you know, and you have nothing planned for you the next day you know. You want to call up your tour manager and go like: "Where am I supposed to be ? You know tell me what to do today !". Yeah, it's a weird feeling.

Maybe it's the winter season in which I am always accompanied by melancholy ...
Placebo is my faithful guide ... their songs are exactly what I'm looking for and need as my drug.

That is why I dedicate today's post to all those who love "๐Œ๐˜ ๐’๐–๐„๐„๐“ ๐๐‘๐ˆ๐๐‚๐„"
- one of the most beautiful, painful and at the same time the most interesting ballads I know. I will always be fascinated by the combination of human pain describing lost love with hunger for drugs and escape from reality.
What happened in Brian and Stefan's life that they expressed it with a song so perfectly desperate?
We have many quotes in which they both described it, but the statements were a little different: was it the man or the woman who was the direct cause of this suffering?
In a Polish interview, I finally discovered an explanation that you can read today.

The most memorable fragment of your first concert in Poland was the performance of My Sweet Prince. Although the words in the chorus "my sweet prince, you are the one" are also characteristic of one of the most famous works in the history of literature, something else probably inspired you to use them in the text...
BM: "Right. But Hamlet has nothing to do with it. These are words someone had smeared with lipstick on the wall of my house before doing something very stupid. They made a deep impression on me. My Sweet Prince is another song that wrote itself. It all happened at a time when someone very close to us was experiencing a personal tragedy. It was about our friend and my ex-girlfriend who had come close to death. It was very sad and hard to swallow."
(Placebo (NON)SECURITY ZONE, Berlin, May 2003)

A very sad experience ... it certainly touches deeply everyone who has had a similar experience in their lives ... I really like the excerpt from the interviews that Rita shared here on the page. That passage expresses Brian's painful emotions very sensitively:

๐Ÿ”ธ๐Ÿ’ฌ .../.../Some of your lyrics are, as I've read in your press release, autobiographical reactions to your personal struggles, yours specifically, and well, I've a question for, well, for an answer I need for myself really. If you're uncomfortable with the question, I wouldn't write anything you asked me not to, but - I would like you to at least tell me, off the record sort to speak, about Sweet Prince. (Did I just say 'off the record'? )
BM. "Okay."

๐Ÿ”ธ๐Ÿ’ฌ (This next part, when I heard it on the tape, I thought, my god, I must seem so weird. Because for a second I just sit there. And then, I said it.) Well see, uh, I'm a recovering addict and -
BM. "Are you really?" (Not sarcastic)

Screenshot: Rock Werchter Festival 2001

๐Ÿ”ธ๐Ÿ’ฌ Unfortunately. Yeah, and considering that, I've experienced a few things, you know. Anyway, I researched the web trying to find something to confirm whether in that song you are literally referring to heroin addiction. But I couldn't find anything about it. So, is it - metaphorical?
BM. "Not at all, it’s very literal. It was a very dark period of my life. I mean, and yeah, the song is essentially about a choice, about a breakdown between two romances. One with a person, and one with the ... with a substance."

๐Ÿ”ธ๐Ÿ’ฌ Well, to some that lyrical expression is obvious, but do you care though if others can get it? Or is it just for your expression, your catharsis? Especially that song. And, uh--
BM. "Well, it's being comprehensive, artistically, that is very very important to me. But that song, well both romances, were tragedies for me, and both well, almost led to death really."

๐Ÿ”ธ๐Ÿ’ฌ Well, in that situation, you just can't have both.
BM. "Personally I’ve -- yeah, they both spur on the other and each person just keeps feeding it, and you don’t want the other person to stop really. And you can’t --"

๐Ÿ”ธ๐Ÿ’ฌ You can't have a relationship with that person while you're doing fucking dope. (It occurs to me...) Wow, are you interviewing me? (smilling)
BM. "It’s alright, really. But yeah, the only way to really get out of the substance abuse, if you want to at that time -- is to break the relationship --- and it is, it was, a very painful experience. You know, that song is the, well, the one that is kind of closest to the bone, and I’ve never really been that naked before, lyrically. It’s very difficult to talk about. And, I always have to watch what I say. That’s why I asked if I could write--- Oh yes, well everything I’ve said so far is okay. Good. Well, thankfully I did, uh, for my own protection I knew that I had to get out before it became a problem. I’ve a great deal of responsibility first and foremost to Steve and Stefan. And well, Steve has a daughter and these things, as we spoke about, these things have a domino effect with the three of us, y’know, it goes a long way, the synchronicity. I had to stop for me...too, and to protect the band. It’s very important for me not to f*ck up. I’ve always been, see, in a way, a lot of my life has been about things like that, like breaking down taboos for myself. And uh, a lot of my experience growing up has been based on doing -- on transgression and doing what is forbidden, and that is, y’know, it’s almost like the last taboo."

๐Ÿ”ธ๐Ÿ’ฌ That's a big one. Especially for people with that psycho, creepydumbtype of tendency toward self destruction it's usually the mother load.
BM. "Yes, and I’ve had problems, hang ups with depression, a lot of emotional problems in the past and it’s taken me a long time to get to that point where I don’t need a crutch."

๐Ÿ”ธ๐Ÿ’ฌ And Placebo?
"It’s my life now. The band is too precious to f*ck up. And I’d never been responsible before for anyone’s attempted suicide and well, that was very difficult for me to deal with. That song, I just, well, it sort of vomited itself forward, it had to be written. It happened while we were demo-ing the second album and that song wrote itself about a week after the fact. Basically it really really affected us in a very big way, all of us." .../.../

What do you say to this emotional dialogue, dear friends?
Drugs and love ... both are often very addictive and it is a very limiting factor for life ...
What fascinates me, however, is Brian's mention of connecting love with drugs.
Because I studied drug addiction a bit while I was in high school, it was interesting to me to find references to heroin in this song.
Brian's verses testify not only to his experience with this addiction, but especially to his incredible talent for putting this pain into texts. This song is another masterpiece in a series ..

Me and the dragon can chase all the pain away...“

“Chasing the Dragon” is a term used when heroin is inhaled through smoking the vapours usually by heating it up on foil and using a tube to breathe them in, also smokable through a "bulb" which is a glass cylinder with a bulbed end to put the drugs in and be heated over a flame.

๐Ÿ”ธ „Me and my valuable friend...“
The price of one dose of heroin for the use described above can be found on the Internet, and it is not a small amount of money, it's measured in hundreds of dollars.

๐Ÿ”ธ „Can fix all the pain away...“
"Fix" is another nickname for heroin.

๐Ÿ”ธ In fairy tales, the prince always lands on the "White Horse", which is another nickname for heroin.
Although it is not directly mentioned in the song, many heroin addicts who felt addressed by this song formed this imaginary connection with the song.
Because heroin is at that moment for all these lost people the "Prince on the White Horse" who comes to save them from the hardships of everyday life.
๐Ÿ”ธ⭐๐Ÿ”ธ

Dear soulmates, with this post, I definitely didn't want to get anyone depressed. The difficult situations in life need to be seen from the other side: anyone who gets out of addiction to anything becomes a stronger and better person and can pass on their experiences.
Look at Brian and Stefan ... their lives speak for themselves.๐Ÿ’—
