"It is unexpected to hear Brian Molko from Placebo on your album.
"Oh no! He knows Serge songs, he has already made a version of Melody Nelson, he played my part in a version of Je t'Aime Moi Non Plus. It's a very well-read boy, very clever. I thought only the French were so careful with the words, as with the English we just have to understand the title and we can dance. Brian Molko wrote a very strong, sassy song, in which he often has the cunning as Cole Porter, to throw a word on the next verse. Even my mother was absolutely delighted with the keeness of the thing: it is not a reverent song."

"Jealousy drove me to perform the song. I remember that Serge was getting a television crew and journalists to listen to the version he’d made with Bardot, which was never released, and there was a very pretty girl in a kilt lying on the sofa. When I saw how proud he was to get the journalists and the girl on the sofa to listen to it, I thought I’d better be the one to sing it, especially that other actresses were interested. Mireille Darc asked him: ‘So, Sergio, what has become of that little song ?’ I didn’t want him to end up in a telephone box with a beautiful girl recording another version of Je t’aime… moi non plus, as he’d done with Bardot. When he suggested I do it, I agreed immediately. We met up in a huge studio in Marbella and in two takes we had the final product. Back in Paris, we went for dinner in the wine cellar of the Hรดtel des Beaux Arts. There was a record player, and without saying a word, Serge put the song on and all of a sudden all the couples around us stopped talking, their knives and forks in mid-air. Serge pinched me and said: ‘I think we’ve got a hit record.’ We never thought for a moment that the song would become such a symbol of freedom all over the world. People listened to it in secret, from Spain to Argentina. The Pope banned it, BBC banned it too, and in Italy, the head of Phonogram Records was thrown into jail. I was making another bad film in Oxford and every day we saw Je t’aime… moi non plus climbing higher in the charts. It was crazy.”

Jane's fashion style was very casual and also very bold. She didn't try to hide her beautiful body.

She did not hesitate to wear a dress back-to-front at prestigious events. 'In 1981, Birkin was on a short flight from Paris to London. Carrying her famous straw basket, she placed it in the overhead compartment of her seat. However, the lid of the basket opened, and the contents spilled all over the floor and on the seats around her. Sitting next to her and assisting her in retrieving the contents of her basket was the late executive of Hermรจs, Jean-Louis Dumas. Birkin complained to Dumas that she was unable to find a suitable leather weekend bag that she liked. According to folklore, the remainder of the flight consisted of the pair designing a bag together and sketching ideas on an air sickness bag. …/.../

Since the creation of the very first Birkin bag, Jane Birkin has always carried one. However, true to her unique style and fashion, she has continually customized her bags with beads, trinkets, protest stickers, and other titbits to create a unique look.

…/.../ Birkin bags is now a modern and trendy pastime practiced by celebrities including Kim Kardashian, Tamara Ecclestone, and many others.'

Currently on her fifth bag after auctioning the first four for charity, Birkin’s philanthropy work is well documented. She often works with Amnesty International on humanitarian issues and donates her yearly royalties for the Birkin bag (approximately $50,000 per year) to a charity of her choice. In 2015, she had a brief disagreement with Hermรจs regarding the farming methods of alligators and crocodiles used to make the bags. Birkin’s request to remove her name from crocodile bags was swiftly met with a series of measures taken by the luxury manufacturer which satisfied Birkin and resulted in her dropping the request to remove her name from the bags.

"I suffered a lot because of my physique, especially at boarding school. The others said I was half boy, half girl. I had no breasts, not even a developing bosom. It was horrible. I was extremely lucky to meet Serge. When he was a student at the ร‰cole des Beaux Arts, he drew a girl, who looked just like a boy, except that she had breasts like mine. He took me to the Louvre to show me Cranach’s paintings and explained that I was a Cranach and that big breasts frightened him. He was exaggerating though. He had just come out of a relationship with Bardot, but Cranach’s was the type of beauty he preferred. After the misery of the boarding school and my marriage, it was incredible meeting someone who found me beautiful and decidedly erotic. He reconciled me with myself. When a man loves you, it changes everything.”

"I don’t believe in destiny. I think we can change everything all the time. Accidents are the best things in existence. They force you to leave a route that seemed to be mapped out, and it’s often when you branch out that you meet some incredible guy who changes your life or an unusual project that turns your career on its head. It’s often when things aren’t going well that we are forced into doing them differently and they suddenly become interesting.”

For me it is a very distant past... I was about twelve years old when my father, a big fan of popular music, got this record from friends, banned in our totalitarian Czechoslovakia. I saw it as a bright moment in our family, of which unfortunately there were not many.

My parents did not have a good relationship, they often argued. But while listening to this song, my mom would smile mysteriously and receive gentle eye contact from her husband. You could say that she melted like chocolate, and I still see it as one of the few very nice moments in the whole life of my parents.

Late one night in the winter of 1967, Gainsbourg and Bardot went into a dimly lit studio in Paris and recorded Michel Colombier's arrangement of Je T'Aime in an intimate two-hour session. The two singers were squashed into a small, steamy glass booth; engineer William Flageollet witnessed what he described as "๐˜ฉ๐˜ฆ๐˜ข๐˜ท๐˜บ ๐˜ฑ๐˜ฆ๐˜ต๐˜ต๐˜ช๐˜ฏ๐˜จ". I thought that if I could combine some kind of eroticism into something that is as cold as electronic music, then it would be really interesting. Also I wanted things to be a bit deranged or slightly out of place…kind of the opposite of Britney Spears! Electronic music is so cold because it’s made with machines so if you try to put sensuality into it, it kind of gives it some soul.“

๐Ÿ”น๐Ÿ’ฌ„I wanted to have different views, different moods and different sorts of perversions on the album and that's why there are so many different people involved.“

That Dimitri is as persuasive as he's well-connected is clear from the characters he tracked down, who include Velvet Underground legend John Cale and Placebo singer Brian Molko. He also managed to seduce Italian sex siren Asia Argento into performing a version of „Je T'Aime“, though admits he didn't actually know her until she walked into the studio to lay down her part.

„I had this idea of doing Je T'Aime because I've always loved the track, but my idea was to invert the characters roles,“ says Dimitri.

„In the original track, Serge Gainsbourg is fucking Jane Birkin, he's doing the act of penetration and I wanted to invert the roles; to have Asia doing the role of penetrating someone else. Brian (Molko) said he would do it so I asked Asia by sending her an email. Immediately, she sent me an email back saying 'yeah, I really want to do it' so I flew to Italy to record her voice.

She was very nervous when she did it because she's not a singer and she didn't know what I was going to ask her to do, she was still shooting movies at the time,“ he continues.

„We did it in a small room with a very basic recording set-up and I remember her chain smoking with me sitting in front of her. It was a little bit of a tense atmosphere but that was good for the track. She didn't know me, I didn't know her so it was a slightly bizarre environment.“

With Asia being generally acclaimed as one of the world's sexiest starlets, the resulting track is as salacious as Dimitri presumably hoped it would be, reflecting the overall highly polished standards of all 11 tracks on Positions. Musically, he's succeeded in tapping into the talents of all his various collaborators, to produce an album of punk, funk and electro songs that genuinely (and unusually, in this day and age) truly rocks.

Do you also find Dimitri's idea of switching the roles of the lovers as brilliant as I do?
I admit that the video from the concert, where both Brian and Argenta are so sexy, is breathtaking and dazzling for me.

”๐—ฆ๐—”๐—— ๐—ช๐—›๐—œ๐—ง๐—˜ ๐—ฅ๐—˜๐—š๐—š๐—”๐—˜” is a song from “Never let me go” which was released on March 25th 2022. It was Placebo's eight studio album and produced by Adam Noble who was also the producer of the previous record “Loud like love” (2013). “Sad White Reggae”, like all other tracks on the album, was recorded at RAK Studios in London, UK, and mastered at 24-96 Mastering in Karlsruhe, Germany.

What's different about “Never let me go” is the process how it came into being because everything was done in reverse order to the usual way of working. The song titles were chosen before the lyrics were written, the work on the record started with the album artwork and picking the cover photo instead of ending with those decisions. Stefan explained that Brian came to him with that idea to try to do everything backwards. “So, there were a few factors in starting this record that were a little bit different. And I think we needed that. I mean, the end result might still sound very much like a Placebo record” (Chaos, March 4th 2022).
Brian: “This process of renewal, of looking for something new, is imperative for me, I really don't want to be bored with Placebo. You have to really push yourself to find different methods, challenging situations, things to say that you find important, to basically do something that feeds you, because without that self-feeding, why would you do that? I would ask myself that question all the time” (France Info, March 30th 2022).

๐Ÿ“ ๐™„๐™ฃ๐™ฉ๐™š๐™ง๐™š๐™จ๐™ฉ๐™ž๐™ฃ๐™œ ๐™›๐™–๐™˜๐™ฉ: Placebo once did something similar with “Infra-Red” from the album “Meds” when Brian wrote the lyrics of the song backwards. He admitted that because of that he first had no idea what “Infra-Red” was about. “I started with the last line and worked my way to the first. I’d never done that before. So it wasn’t until I got to the first line that I was able to take a step back and understand what it was about” (Suicide Girls, May 14th 2006).

Different to the previous albums Brian and Stefan also started to work on “Never let me go” without a drummer. “We wanted to make an album without drums and just do it with a drum machine and that has influenced the process a little bit. [...] And just having those beginnings a little bit different from the previous records, the result is very different from all the last records. I don't know, but it was important to incite to make the journey a little bit different”, Stefan explained in an interview with Alfa 91,3 FM Mexico. But in the end they even had two drummers instead of none at all: Matt Lunn, who is a touring member of the band and first joined them in 2004, and Pietro Garrone of Husky Loops.

Brian said that “Sad White Reggae” was written during a period of insomnia. In the middle of the night he decided to play something by The Police but ended up writing his own song (see quotes below). He stated that the title is a private joke for him. The song includes references to Jane Birkin, Samye Ling and Lama Yeshe, Dundee and Brian's mother.

She is best known for her releationship with Serge Gainsbourg and their scandalous duet “Je t'aime moi non plus” which Brian and Asia Argento covered for Dimitri Tikovoi's music project Trash Palace in 2002. Two years later Brian recorded a song called “Smile” with Birkin, it was released on her album “Rendez-vous”.

“Sad White Reggae” is part of the current tour. The shared video was recorded at Bearded Theory's Spring Gathering festival on May 27th 2022. This song is one of my absolute favorites on the new album and also live.

And for some reason I decided I was going to work out how to play Roxanne by The Police, and I couldn't and I ended up writing this song instead. And because I was trying to copy The Police I called it, 'Sad White Reggae' because that's essentially what the first two Police albums is. It's just 'Sad White Reggae', so it's a little in-joke for me, private joke, which kind of makes its way onto the album. That's my song for Scotland. I got the man on the way
I wanna sleep on the way down
So many miles away
I used to dance in a fountain

I got the man on the way
Measure for measure
So many miles away
Drunk on a mountain

I got a message for Jane
Float on a feather
I hope the kids are okay
Now for the kicker

I'm stuck on a train
Heading for Scotland
They took my mom away
Illuminati

And I'm thin as rake
I'm no longer fleshy
I'll go to Samye Ling
See Lama Yeshe

Where the skies are grey
And the skies are cloudy
And every river flows
Back to Dundee

I won't give into the pain
I'll smile in the mirror
There's no one else to blame

Collapse into never, collapse into never

The song was written by Brian and composer Rachel Corkett. Maybe her name sounds familiar to you because her husband Paul Corkett produced Placebo's third album ”Black market music”.

The English actress, singer and model Birkin attained international fame for her decade-long musical and romantic partnership with Serge Gainsbourg. One of their most famous songs is ”Je t'aime... moi non plus” which was released in 1969 and caused an enormous scandal because of its sexual explicitness.
I guess we all know and love the cover version of ”Je t'aime... moi non plus” that Brian recorded for Dimitri Tikovoi's music project Trash Palace with Italian actress, singer and model Asia Argento in 2002. That's by the way an interesting similarity between the two women, isn't it?

Don't stare at your face
With your nose out of place
At the wrinkles where zits used to be
And remember that smiling uses less muscles
And frowning just makes you look ugly

So smile, smile
And the whole world will smile with you
So smile, baby, smile
If the whole world just had a clue

Don't mess with your man
When he's selling you grams
He would kill you for less and then smile
And don't curse at a whore
As you open the door
coz your service wont be with a smile

So smile, smile
And the whole world smiles with you
And smile, baby, smile
If the whole world just had a clue

Don't sneer at your doctor
And Gamble & Procter
Coz they're just pawns in the game
The perfect prescription is one that you're given
it's filled out in jesus' name
Don't be scared of your preacher
Coz hes just a leech
Hes too busy cruising your ass
Theres a verse in the bible
That says we're all liable
For everything that comes to pass

So smile, smile
And the whole world smiles with you
So smile, baby, smile
If the whole world just had a clue
So smile, smile
Smile, smile
Smile, smile...

On December 14th 1946 Jane Mallory Birkin was born in London, UK. She began her career as an actress at the age of 20.
In 1969 she met Serge Gainsbourg while co-starring with him in the film “Slogan”, and this encounter marked the beginning of a working and personal relationship that lasted for decades. In the same year Jane and Serge released the scandalous song “Je t'aime moi non plus”, which Brian covered with Asia Argento in 2002. She also acted in the same-titled controversial 1976 film under Gainsbourg's direction.

Jane also appeared on his 1971 concept album “Histoire de Melody Nelson”, she portrayed the Lolia-like teenage protagonist in the song and on the cover. With “Ballade de Melody Nelson” Brian also covered a song from that record.
After separating from Gainsbourg in 1980 Jane continued to work as both an actress and a singer, appearing in various independent films and recording numerous solo albums.
Birkin has resided mainly in France since the 1970s. She is the mother of photographer Kate Barry (d. 2013), actress and singer Charlotte Gainsbourg, and musician Lou Doillon. In her career she has released 14 studio and six live albums and starred in more than 70 film productions. Her humanitarian interests have also led her to work with Amnesty International on immigrant welfare and the AIDS problem.

Dear friends, I have no complicated Placebo theme for you tonight. I have found an amazing interview for you that Dimitri Tikovoi gave to a Hong Kong Nightlife Guide Magazine in 2004.

I have a very nice Instagram experience with Dimitri. Last year I shared a video on my IG account from the performance of his project Trash Palace in Saint-Malo, France in 2002, it was the song The Metric System, on which Brian Molko was invited to collaborate.
I tagged Dimitri in this post and he didn't hesitate and commented early in the morning that it was a blast of the past for him and that he had played this concert but never seen it again. He even asked me to send him a video to DM, which I was very happy to do.
Dear Dimitri kindly exchanged a few sentences with me and shared this video on his profile with these words:

๐Ÿ“Œ Sitting in a west London bar on a sunny afternoon, Trash Palace main-man and former Parisien producer Dimitri Tokovoi, speaks softly as he outlines the centrality of sex in his electronic rock band and more specifically the importance of real sex behind Trash Palace's aesthetic.
„There are so many programmes about sex on TV here but when you watch them you feel like you're at school studying a subject such as how you should give a blow job,“ he snorts.
„Sex is not about that in reality at all; it's fashion, perversion, love, whatever; it's much more complex than just the image that's portrayed in the media at the moment.“
He equally opinionated about Trash Palace's perfectly formed fusion of rock & roll and electro-disco, which he created with the help of a highly impressive cast list of collaborators.
„I deliberately set out to find different people to collaborate with because sexuality is about a relationship between two people, it's very hard to have sex by yourself,“ he points out.
„I wanted to have different views, different moods and different sorts of perversions on the album and that's why there are so many different people involved.“

DT: „No, they're two different things, Trash Palace is my fantasy, it's something that I'm taking out of my mind. Sometimes I come very close to living it as well (chuckling) but essentially I don't want it to be an explanation of my life. If I try to recreate my life through Trash Palace it will have limitations, whereas my fantasies or those fantasies that I'm generating with other people, are limitless. With fantasies there are more possibilities.“

DT: „Sex is more diverse here and more pretentious in Paris. There are a lot more taboos in England which makes it a lot better because it makes everything a bit more perverse, so more interesting. There are more rules to break and places to go in the dark to break them, which I find really interesting. One of the aspects of sex I like is its danger; that makes it more exciting. In France, people are more upfront; there is less perversion in France, I think, perversion is more a part of the English culture.“๐Ÿ“Œ

As we already know, this song is a cover version of the immortal song of
It was put out as a single in 1969 and reached no. one in the UK, but it was banned in several other countries due to its overtly sexual content. Gainsbourg wrote “Je t'aime moi non plus” for the famous actress and sex symbol Brigitte Bardot with whom he had a short love affair in late 1967.
Like many of us, I have known this song since childhood because my father loved it.
Dimitri's idea of overturning the roles of lovers then seemed brilliant and very amusing to me, and Brian's live performance just took my breath away๐Ÿ”ฅ๐Ÿ’—.

Personally, I wish Dimitri many more successes, because he still has a head full of ideas and shares posts about his musical collaboration with many young artists on his IG account.
⭐And who knows, maybe there will be another collaboration with our beloved band?⭐๐Ÿฅฐ

Let's get back to ”Smile”, I haven't told you everything about this collaboration. The song was written by Brian and composer Rachel Corkett. Maybe her name sounds familiar to you because her husband Paul Corkett produced Placebo's third album ”Black market music”. I find it very interesting how all those people are connected with each other in different ways. How about you?

”Smile” was released as one of altogether 13 duets on Jane Birkin's album ”Rendez-vous” on March 29th 2004.

Brian, you had sung with Jane Birkin. I assume that this encounter had marked you ...
”Working with her was more than an honour. She has a dignity, a presence and incredible generosity. She is very English, but as a lady, actually. For me, she is like a member of the royal family.”

Don't stare at your face
With your nose out of place
At the wrinkles where zits used to be
And remember that smiling uses less muscles
And frowning just makes you look ugly

So smile, smile
And the whole world will smile with you
So smile, baby, smile
If the whole world just had a clue

Don't mess with your man
When he's selling you grams
He would kill you for less and then smile
And don't curse at a whore
As you open the door
coz your service wont be with a smile

So smile, smile
And the whole world smiles with you
And smile, baby, smile
If the whole world just had a clue

Don't sneer at your doctor
And Gamble & Procter
Coz they're just pawns in the game
The perfect prescription is one that you're given
it's filled out in jesus' name
Don't be scared of your preacher
Coz hes just a leech
Hes too busy cruising your ass
Theres a verse in the bible
That says we're all liable
For everything that comes to pass

So smile, smile
And the whole world smiles with you
So smile, baby, smile
If the whole world just had a clue
So smile, smile
Smile, smile
Smile, smile...
