Dear friends,

I don't know how you feel, for me it is a song illuminated by spring rays, those that bring rebirth after a cruel, dark, hard winter. It is, along with Speak In Tongues, the most positive song on the whole album. The song directly calls out - look at us, after all we've been through, we rise like a mythical phoenix bird from the ashes, stronger, more beautiful, happier, full of faith in a better tomorrow.

"Let me put it this way — I have a theory about drugs and alcohol. There is a limited amount that a human being is able to consume in a course of a lifetime. Some people are sensible and consume the amount that’s able to stretch a lifetime. Some people who are not so sensible, like me and Stefan, consume that limited amount in a period of about 10 years. There comes a point that it doesn’t do anything for you that isn’t negative. In fact, it destroys your life and you lose everything. Then one has to either surrender to that, which most people do, which begins the inevitable descent to nothingness and emptiness. Or one takes the courageous step to try and rebuild one's life in a more positive way, which was what Stefan and I decided to do. It was one life choice and a major philosophical influence on the record."

Anyway, for Placebo it's a very atypical song, very original, it could be played on mainstream radio from morning till night as a pop rock anthem, spread that positivity to all listeners and it wouldn't be bad at all.

Cast your mind back to the days
When I’d pretend I was okay
I had so very much to say
About my crazy living
Now that I’ve stared into the void
So many people I’ve annoyed
I have to find a middle way,
A better way of giving

So I haven’t given up
But all my choices, my good luck
Appeared to go and get me stuck
In an open prison
Now I am trying to break free
Be in a state of empathy
Find the true and inner me
Eradicate the schism

No-one can take it away from me
And no-one can tear it apart
Because a heart that hurts is a heart that works
A heart that hurts is a heart that works

A heart that hurts is a heart that works

No-one can take it away from me
And no-one can tear it apart
It may be elaborate fantasy
But it’s the perfect place to start

Because a heart that hurts is a heart that works
A heart that hurts is a heart that works

The video for this song was directed by Heroes for Zeroes and is the 24th official video of Placebo's career.

It's an absolute contrast between lived anxiety and rediscovered hope, the duality between darkness and light seems to confirm the theme not only of this song, but of the entire album.
๐Ÿ”น๐Ÿ’ฌ ๐’๐“๐„๐…๐€๐: “I mean that there seems to be quite a lot of light and dark themes with this record in terms of the album cover as the beginning. With the solar eclipse, you go to the light from the darkness to light it down. And what we’re trying to do in the video, is playing with the contrast between light and dark, so we’re kind of going from playing in the darkness together, and then we emerging and leaving to play into this quite illuminated backdrop.”

๐ŸŒนThis song was used as the theme song for the famous American drama ⭐๐‚๐‘๐”๐„๐‹ ๐ˆ๐๐“๐„๐๐“๐ˆ๐Ž๐๐’⭐ with Ryan Phillippe, Reese Witherspoon, Selma Blair and Sarah Michelle Gellar. This film is based on the 1782 novel "๐ƒ๐š๐ง๐ ๐ž๐ซ๐จ๐ฎ๐ฌ ๐‹๐ข๐š๐ข๐ฌ๐จ๐ง๐ฌ" ๐›๐ฒ ๐‚๐ก๐จ๐๐ž๐ซ๐ฅ๐จ๐ฌ ๐๐ž ๐‹๐š๐œ๐ฅ๐จ๐ฌ, which is set in the present day.

The plot concerns two high school step siblings from New York's high society, who are forever at war with each other and scheme and manipulate other people to achieve their goals, including sex and revenge. I think ๐„๐•๐„๐‘๐˜ ๐˜๐Ž๐” ๐„๐•๐„๐‘๐˜ ๐Œ๐„ is a great choice for the overall experience of this drama. The lyrics reflect the tone and plot of the film, especially Ryan's character Sebastian.
Following a bet with his evil sister, he decides to hurt a girl who is very vulnerable and naive, and as a result, everything comes to an inescapably tragic end.

It was 1999. MTV channel was playing on the TV. The first notes of the song came on, and the singer's voice rang inside my chest. That was my "Wooow PLACEBO!!!" first time. With my arms full - washed clothes in one hand and my almost one-year-old daughter in the other and a baby dummy in my mouth - I stood in front of the television and for several minutes I could not take my eyes off the ambiguous singing being. These memories are still as vivid and strong as if it were yesterday...

⭐The song was written during a soundcheck in Leipzig on Placebo’s first German tour in October 1996, and was one of the first songs to be written for the album, along with ๐‘บ๐’„๐’‚๐’“๐’†๐’… ๐‘ถ๐’‡ ๐‘ฎ๐’Š๐’“๐’๐’”.

๐๐ฎ๐ซ๐๐ž๐ซ ๐๐ฎ๐ž๐ž๐ง is a play on words between the name of the famous fast food chain Burger King, the word queen and the Luxembourg where Brian and Stefan spent their teenage years.

๐Ÿ“ข๐๐ซ๐ข๐š๐ง: "Yeah, we did a song. A new song that will be on the new album, which is called Burger Queen. It's a pun on Burger King and it also means Luxembourger queen. The queer from Luxembourg. It is a very sad story. The character in this song is in the wrong place at the wrong time. It's one of the worst things to be in the wrong place. He is homosexual, he is goth, he's on heroin and he lives in Luxembourg. These are four things you can have in your life ... No. I'm not saying that being homosexual is bad. It's the worst place where you can be all of those things. It makes us cry to listen to this song and play it."

⭐The ๐‹๐˜๐‘๐ˆ๐‚๐’ are inspired by Brian’s lonely adolescence in Luxembourg.
๐Ÿ“ข๐๐ซ๐ข๐š๐ง: "I've always been a loner. The three of us were, we spent our teenage years locked in our rooms, playing music. And like many boys of that age, I dreamed of becoming a star. A city like Luxembourg can be stifling when you are trying to create an identity. I couldn't be myself there. I felt isolated, far from the places I wanted to be. There was no place where I could express myself, find an echo. From this isolation I made songs, Teenage Angst or Burger Queen, because it inevitably turned me into a voyeur. Which is not the most enviable position to observe the world."

๐’๐š๐ฅ๐ฅ๐ฒ ๐’๐ญ๐ซ๐š๐ญ๐ญ๐จ๐ง: Maybe your European upbringing allows you to get away with lyrics that you wouldn't have dared use if you'd been brought up speaking English in the UK or America. I'm thinking especially of those rhymes in 'Burger Queen'...
๐Ÿ“ข๐๐ซ๐ข๐š๐ง: That's the whole point of a song like 'Burger Queen' sort of like structurally or if you're talking about it from a musical standpoint. The whole point of that song is to use a cheesy rhyme but to use words like infection, you know, connection, erection, you know. So it's subverting the cheesiness. It's like putting fuck and baby in the same verse.

๐Ÿ“ข๐๐ซ๐ข๐š๐ง: No, that one's kind of more of a story really. It's kind of about being in the wrong place at the wrong time you know and I guess you just finally... since we kind of grew up in Luxembourg - finally since we've written a song about it we can kind of forget about it now. But you know I think it's just... the play on Burger King, Burger Queen, Luxemburger, just kind of you know amused me when I first came up with it and along with 'My Sweet Prince' I think it's one of the saddest songs, but really beautiful, that we've written. I think there's a real beauty in our sadness you know when it goes down there there's something in it that really pulls at your heart, you know, and I don't know how we really achieve it but it's there. There always seems to be a tiny bit of hope at the end of it as well which is important."

Having passed Lorraine, finding yourself in the Grand Duchy comes a true shock. Just a few steps from the rapeseed fields close to the former mine basin, and the border clearly warns of the inevitability of the shock coming: alcohol and cigarettes at a price that can withstand any competition, signs in two languages: French and Luxembourgish. The latter resembles distorted German with guttural sounds.

Very quickly, the roads turn into avenues lined with tall buildings with signs of the of the largest commercial banks on the planet; luxury multifunctional cars and high-end sports cars are proudly displayed in front of them. No one walks here, people mostly drive in soft silence, muffled by financial well-being.

It was in this universe of comfort and slowness that the childhood and adolescence of young Brian Molko passed. Within this reliable but terribly predictable world, the young guy couldn’t find his place. He felt completely out of touch with his older brother and couldn't find any suitable cultural pursuits for himself. “My teenage years were dark, filled with loneliness and boredom. I felt out of place. All the time I was waiting for something special to happen and turn my whole life upside down.” (Brian Molko)
[…]
“What was great about Luxembourg, that’s its extremely international community. I grew up surrounded by children of various nationalities. I think, it made me open to different cultures, different traditions at an early age. And that taught me a lot. It taught me tolerance and understanding towards others. I think it's very important." (Brian Molko)
[…]
Next to his mother and older brother, his life flowed like a long and very calm river. Constantly busy with his own affairs and being in endless departures due to his business, Brian's father was very rarely at home. It’s the lack of paternal attention that future leader of Placebo would later call an important factor that had a huge impact on his personality.
“My father is an American financial freak. Of course, in a family where there was no place for any artistic aspirations, I felt like a black sheep. Nobody believed in me. So, I locked myself in my room and learned to play guitar." (Brian Molko)

“When I was a kid, we often drove somewhere in the family van, and my parents listened to The Beatles, The Kinks and other bands like that on the road. I was put to bed to the Elton John’s music … The Bee Gees and questionable masterpieces of The Wings, but at the age of 7 you can’t protest, you have to endure. My father was a big fan of Buddy Holly. It was really cool because my friends’ parents loved Elvis and I was kind of an anti-Elvis." (Brian Molko)

Studying at the prestigious American International School of Luxembourg, founded in 1962 as Dupont School, Brian was languishing; the only thing that fascinated him was drama course. Being a fragail and insecure boy, he was lost in the crowd of diplomats and bankers’ children he studied with. That close presence of the arrogant offspring of American financiers convinced him to never ever live in countries where people of his father’s job do.

Molko suffered of deep frustration and to replace it, he often visited Luxembourg bars of – which bothered his parents a lot. Unlike the little American bourgeois around him, he didn’t do any sports and instead, he escaped to the Netherlands where he also visited local bars with a wide range of psychotropic substances

“The Luxembourg school is the worst thing that happened in my life. I had to quit the high school because I was constantly bullied there. I used to provoke others, including the guys two times bigger than myself. Standing in front of a small, frail boy, they didn’t dare to hit. I remember that once, they hang me up by my feet at a height of six meters. If they had untied the rope then, I would definitely have my neck broken. So, I looked into the eyes of death at a very young age." (Brian Molko)

“Sometimes, I still have nightmares that I’m back to school. But the good thing is that in the middle of a dream, I always realise that school is over for me many years ago, and then I begin to badmouth everyone on my way.” (Brian Molko)

My memory is still very vivid. Our whole house was already asleep, I was sitting in bed buried in pillows, the lit candles materialized the shadows and the incense stick made the perfect atmosphere.

And at exactly midnight, something fantastic came. Pure Placebo like a cut diamond. The lyrics, which didn't make much sense, still filled me with a dark melancholy. The strange sound of the drums in the middle of the night was absolutely hypnotic, Brian's voice repeating the monotonous verses brought me almost to the edge of a trance. And the ending with the piano was simply "Wooow... I didn't expect that...". Since then I wanted to hear it again and again.

So let's now celebrate this one year birthday by telling you everything we already know about this song and maybe a little something new.

This song was based on Brian's realization that he was being spied on by his neighbors who did not respect his privacy.. Unfortunately, this always happens when you live near a celebrity. However, with the advent of technology, virtually every smartphone owner has become a potential paparazzo.

“I began to ponder the countless ways in which our privacy has been eroded and stolen since the introduction worldwide of CCTV cameras that now employ racist facial recognition technologies; the rise of the internet and the smartphone, which has turned practically every user into a paparazzo and a spectator in their own life, and how we have mostly all offered up personal information to enormous multinationals whose sole intent is to exploit us.”

Thanks to Brian giving us an explanation for this song, we have a clearer idea of why it was created.

From this song, I sense an indictment of all of us for allowing these technologies to take over our daily lives. Not only do we silently suffer from CCTV in big companies because we care about money, about our livelihood. Not just that cameras in the streets have crept into our actual reality and intimacy. But we ourselves contribute to it very frivolously by sharing the details of our lives with 'Big Brother' on a daily basis. The mobile phone has become our most faithful companion, searching for a contact with a live person is second only.

๐Ÿ”น๐Ÿ’ฌ ๐๐‘๐ˆ๐€๐ ๐Ž๐ ๐‡๐ˆ๐’ ๐’๐Ž๐:
“I'm a child of the 80s. In my days there were no surveillance cameras every few meters and the phones were still connected to the wall by a cable. My son's world can not compared to mine. He enjoys the progress. But what is the bill for this motley present and future that is waiting for him at some point. He has lost the freedom to walk down the streets without ending up in the sights of a surveillance camera.
I hate these things. And his cell phone is de facto a control medium. It holds him hostage but of course he doesn't see it. He only knows the dopamine kick that calls him to scroll again and again.“

๐Ÿ“ŒThe video for ‘Surrounded By Spies’ is shot from the perspective of CCTV cameras. Their faces — filtered and warped — appear on the artwork for the first time ever, for singles ‘Beautiful James’ and ‘Surrounded By Spies’. Nowhere in the material do you see Molko or Olsdal clearly, which feeds into the ever-present theme of surveillance, either by security cameras (London, after all, is the most surveilled city on Earth outside China), by your neighbours, or by your own hyper-vigilance. However, it was also a more practical choice.

“It was born out of a certain inherited shyness,” Molko admits. “We found ourselves after four or five years not really having done a photoshoot, looking around, and understanding that nobody puts a picture of themselves out into the world without manipulating it. We all hide, we all project an image of ourselves that isn’t really our true selves. And so the idea came to take this aesthetic and push it to the extreme, [to become] a very clear comment on aesthetics today.”

Brian's concern about the enormous impact of these technologies led me to yet another term.

Do you know the term ๐Ÿ”น๐‹๐ฎ๐๐๐ข๐ฌ๐ฆ and the resulting ๐๐ž๐จ-๐‹๐ฎ๐๐๐ข๐ฌ๐ฆ?๐Ÿ”น

๐Ÿ”น๐‹๐ฎ๐๐๐ข๐ฌ๐ญ๐ฌ - members of a secret organization of English textile workers in the 19th century. They protested the boom in the textile industry by destroying the newly invented weaving machines for fear of losing their jobs.
From this comes the term ๐Ÿ”น๐๐ž๐จ-๐ฅ๐ฎ๐๐๐ข๐ฌ๐ฆ - used to describe someone who is opposed or resistant to new technologies.

“You see, I haven’t seen it from that angle, that’s interesting. This track is kind of claustrophobic because, you know, it’s hard to avoid unkind eyes nowadays. It’s kind of crapped off on us. The character of 'Surrounded by Spies' feels that pressure of modern age, what it can do to you, how it can slowly turn your world very dark. And it can start to feel at times that there’s no escape. There’s some kind of darkness in this song. We wanted music to be very expressive, evil… We’re trying to find the hope, trying to find the cracklings of light in our songs but I think that 'Surrounded by Spies' is probably one of the darker moments. When it comes to Placebo lyrics, generally, on all the albums there were elements of personal, emotional honesty. I think that we’ve realized that it’s what makes the song universal - if you make it personal, sing of what you’ve experienced on this planet, whatever the feeling may be. We always discovered the darkest sides of human psyche and human’s emotions which are not easy to talk about, to acknowledge that we have sometimes. So I think this track is continuing in that way.“

“I think life would be too safe without taking risks. We’ve got very eclectic taste fan base, they don’t like one type of music. 'Surrounded by Spies' is very different to our first song, 'Beautiful James'. But it’s still us. It was good to do things slightly different, not to make two same songs, to let the fans taste yourself what’s to come. But as I said, it’s all still Placebo.“

In my opinion, with this song and the seemingly unrelated verses of the lyrics, Brian is expressing his concern about our being overwhelmed by all the different virtual media we have let into our lives.

When you read the verses, they don't seem to put together any story. It's as if headlines and bits of news from various sites across the internet are running in front of our eyes.

Can you see that now? It's another one of the masterpieces of the last Placebo album.

To create this song, Brian used a special method - the ⭐"cut-up technique"⭐, which was used by the writer and representative of the ๐๐ž๐š๐ญ ๐Œ๐จ๐ฏ๐ž๐ฆ๐ž๐ง๐ญ, ๐–๐ข๐ฅ๐ฅ๐ข๐š๐ฆ ๐๐ฎ๐ซ๐ซ๐จ๐ฎ๐ ๐ก๐ฌ, and which the unforgettable icon David Bowie fell in love with, and even made his own computer program for this method of creation.

It works by simply taking the finished text and cutting it into individual parts. Then you play with how you put random parts of the text back to create something completely different and new. For creators who don't want to be limited by anything, it's a fantastic and very liberating way to create.

๐Ÿ“ข๐๐ซ๐ข๐š๐ง: There is no great mystery, after almost ten years of career, that's what the bands that are still there do. Many fellow artists who started at the same time as us, today no longer exist. People are looking for some deep meaning in this compilation, but there is none. It's not a record deal issue, because it doesn't count as an album for the record company. It's not a matter of ideas, because we've already written the new album. Maybe it was just about giving us a little time to do something else. We've been on tour for two years and we need to take a break, to distance ourselves from things a bit.

We put two previously unreleased songs on the compilation to tame the voracious appetite of our fans. We tried to impose Brian Eno rules on ourselves. The songs should not be longer than two and a half minutes and there should be no guitar. First, because we have never done it before. And also, because people think Placebo is a guitar band, and we don't like that label. Looking back, I think Twenty Years is probably one of our greatest songs. It's our closest track to U2's With or Without You, the ultimate song.
[…]

๐Ÿ“ข๐๐ซ๐ข๐š๐ง: It's not a ‘greatest hits’ compilation, it's not a ‘best of’, it's a kind of historical document, a chronological retrospective of the band, through its most accessible pieces. Choosing singles was a way of presenting the old repertoire. We are aware that there are 40% of fans today who got to know the band through Sleeping With Ghosts and specifically, The Bitter End. We see them at the concerts, they are 14-15 years old... At the time of the first album, they were still watching TV. Teenagers don't have a lot of money and if they want to listen to more Placebo, they shouldn’t necessarily buy all four albums.

There are many different versions of the Placebo story. […] But my favourite of all is the one about this perverse trio who wrote these extraordinary songs...
It's about a band who became famous for a song so sexually brave and confrontational that coy odes to boys called "Michael" sound feeble in comparison. A song about being a "Nancy Boy", about lube and rubbers and how "We're a couple / When our bodies double." And about how Molko, an actual functioning bisexual, has been unpleasantly dismissed as a sexual dilettante while the charlatan bisexuals reap plaudits.
Once More With Feeling is all about a band who wrote a song called "You Don't Care About Us". A track that's propelled by an unstoppable, elastic bass line and that flips manically between wise, sighing despair and spitting adolescent rage. A song which feels like it had no choice but to be written and which is one of the rawest, most brilliant singles of the last decade.
It's a story about the shuddering electronica of "Pure Morning", the sleazy sneer of "Every You, Every Me" and the searing riff of "Bruise Pristine". It's about a band constrained by their musical limitations but who thrashed happily within them. It's about the way that "Special K" climbs frantically towards its chorus before collapsing sadly under its own weight.
This is a singles collection which reveals to the listener the most seductively bruising rock band of recent years. Each song stems from a songwriter so instinctive and precise that when he writes a song called "The Bitter End", that's exactly what it sounds like.
And yes, it's a tale about an imperfect band, a band prone to sloppy sloganeering like "Slave To The Wage" or clumsy posturing like "Black Eyed". But the band remain electrifying, alive and enthralling in all those imperfections.
This is a story about a band who have remained fiercely independent in a bland pop landscape. Read it.

Hello friends,

Placebo has released 8 studio albums, compilations, covers and many successful singles during its existence. The guys have toured the world several times. They've met a lot of people important to their work and their lives.

Why am I writing all this?
Because every event in the life of this successful and beloved duo deserves our memory and a little celebration.

It is full of gems in which each of us will find the story of our lives.
Can you admit which song from this album you like the most and what memories connect you to it?
Who among you was already a fan when Placebo released this yellow gem?
And which of you became their devoted soul thanks to this album?
So let's break the series of lullabies again today and immerse ourselves in memories.

I really like this one from James Oldham of NME:

He might cite Sonic Youth as his prime influence, but they have never made a record that's come close to matching the muscular force of this album. The sheer clarity and power of the sounds here frequently take your breath away: the cranked-out guitar line of 'Pure Morning', the rumbling fuzz of 'Allergic (To Thoughts Of Mother Earth)', the strung-out, mechanical beauty of 'My Sweet Prince', they're all fantastic moments, glossed and fattened by Steve Osbourne's amazing production and strongly reminiscent of both Nirvana's 'Nevermind' and Hole's 'Celebrity Skin'.

That's what Placebo are pushing towards all the time: the perfect radio hit. These aren't songs that need to be studied too carefully. Whatever Molko says about the vulnerability and self-criticism of the lyrics on this record, the overall effect hardly reeks of repentance or fragility, the songs here are too confident for that, too sure of both where they're going and how they're going to get there.
A thrilling record, then, made by freaks, for freaks. Just don't expect to leave with your soul intact.

But apparently the live context didn't work for the song neither, there are only eight confirmed performances of this song to be found., all of them took place in 1997.

๐Ÿ’ฌ "I guess we were still learning how to use the studio, and we were looking to flesh out our sound beyond the power trio format. But it was a difficult record to make because we had a very dysfunctional relationship with our producer [Steve Osborne]. By the end of it, we weren't even talking. And it wasn't as if we'd had any major arguments. We started off not talking much anyway, and then as the months went by, it became less until there was no talking. It was such a strange atmosphere. The breakthrough track was "Pure Morning," and we didn't record that until our work with Steve was done. We recorded that during a B-side session with a different producer, Phil Vinall. That was like we were kids in a candy shop. It was borne out of chaos, because the pressure was off. So we just started playing around with all of these different sounds and that song was the result. I hadn't heard it in about ten years until recently, and I was actually surprised at how timeless and modern that song actually sounds. I have no issues whatsoever with the music—I actually really quite like the music—I just don't think the lyrics are my best. That's kind of why we haven't played it in concert for the last decade. Probably nine years to be precise. "Nancy Boy" neither, which is why we decided to resurrect them from the grave for this tour we're embarking on."

๐Ÿ”น๐Ÿ’ฌ “It's a very romantic title and when we were demoing the album it seemed to sort of emerge as something that... a way of getting the theme of the record across. You know the record's like sort of primarily about an ever-pervading loneliness and heartbreak really and you know there's quite a few relationship songs in there so on one level it's kind of like us... it's a message for us, from us to ourselves, to each other in the band. It's a message to our fans and it's also sort of something that's universal in the way that most people have felt that at least once in their lives.“

๐Ÿ’ฌ“We’ve been flashing up images of David whilst playing ‘Without You I’m Nothing’ on this tour and some nights it's been such an emotional experience that I've come very close to breaking down into tears" Molko confides. "There was a point during the summer where I said to Stefan 'I'm not too sure if I can play this anymore, it's tearing me apart'. But I’ve got over that now and instead, it has become a celebration of who David Bowie was and the impact he had on me as a human being, as well as a musician. The best advice he ever gave us was 'whatever you do, never lose your spontaneity'. David was always one for taking left-corners and going off on tangents and I think he infused a courage in us to do exactly that, to constantly re-invent ourselves. So yes the significance has changed, it's become a lot more about David for me, which is ok. He's kind of constantly with me at the moment, which is quite sweet and I reflect on our conversations, on his advice and what it was like to see him play every night for five years when we were touring together; he's like my guardian angel!”

I'm putting his statement at the end of today's post and now I'm going to say goodbye.

The memory of the release of this yellow treasure is very personal to me today. Thanks to this album, I got to know a band that made its mark on my heart and still holds a vital place in it today.
I will be happy if you share with us the feelings that songs like Pure Morning, Brick Shithouse, You Don't Care About Us, The Crawl or My Sweet Prince left in you..

While Placebo’s debut revelled in hedonism, its sequel was all emotional aftermath, and demonstrated more assured songwriting. Producer ๐’๐“๐„๐•๐„ ๐Ž๐’๐๐Ž๐‘๐๐„ tells us more.

With its more robust sonics and more complex emotions serving a series of perspectives on relationship breakdown, Without You I’m Nothing would verify Molko and musical partner Stefan Olsdal’s songwriting prowess – and their faculty for crafting bewitching arrangements.
…/.../

Dissatisfied with the ‘thin’ sound of their debut and the frustration of building each track one instrument at a time, the band largely recorded Without You I’m Nothing live. After meeting Happy Mondays and New Order producer Steve Osborne – a big fan of the band’s debut – following a show in Manchester, Placebo agreed to work with him to craft this more direct-sounding album at Peter Gabriel’s Real World Studios.

“They already had pretty much everything ready to go when it came to making the album,” Osborne tells us. “There was stuff like Brick Shithouse, which needed a little more production in terms of the sound, but overall our approach was to make an old-school band-playing-in-a-room record.”

These idiosyncratic approaches fed into Molko’s magnetism. “What you do is develop your own style through mistakes,” the guitarist told Alternative Press in 1999. “If you don’t know what the rules are, then there are no rules in the first place. You’ll find you’re doing some crazy chord which, if you were taking a course, you wouldn’t attempt until three years into it.”

Osborne was hugely impressed by the 26 year-old’s abilities. “Brian totally had his own style, his own way of playing,” he tells Guitar.com. “I mean, I think that’s the thing about Placebo. They’ve got this very unique sound. Stefan too, he would be playing bass chords on the Fender VI. That made it difficult to mix the low end sometimes but, together, their whole ethos and sound was attractive.”

The album’s 12 songs sketched out a multi-hued postmortem of a relationship, digging into suffering via the depressive plod of The Crawl and the thorny swing of Summer’s Gone. But at the album’s core was an optimistic, radiant little gem that motored along with a headstrong chordal thrust and seemed destined for rock radio airplay. The buoyant Every You Every Me was an obvious single and a perfect counterpoint to the anguish that surrounded it. It remains Osborne’s favourite from the record. “I’m a sucker for a good single.”

Released in October 1998, Without You I’m Nothing was immediately recognised as a deeper work than the band’s debut. It drew a wider assortment of listeners into Placebo’s fold too, resonating with those in the alt crowd looking for blistering rock driven by relatable themes like regret and heartbreak.

“Without You I’m Nothing, I mean, that’s a good album.” says Osborne. “It’s something that I’d put up there with one of my favourites. The sound of it comes down to the way they wanted to do it, which was real. It sounds real because it was done real. There’s no tidying up or anything. It was just captured as it was played in the studio. It’s the opposite of the way records are being made now.”(๐™ฑ๐šข ๐™ฐ๐š—๐š๐šข ๐™ฟ๐š›๐š’๐šŒ๐šŽ ๐š๐š˜๐š› ๐™ถ๐šž๐š’๐š๐šŠ๐š›.๐šŒ๐š˜๐š–, ๐™ผ๐šŠ๐š›๐šŒ๐š‘ ๐Ÿธ0๐Ÿธ๐Ÿธ)
