I found a great interview with 𝑺𝒕𝒆𝒇𝒂𝒏 𝑶𝒍𝒔𝒅𝒂𝒍 published in the Swedish 𝒁𝒆𝒓𝒐 𝑴𝒂𝒈𝒂𝒛𝒊𝒏𝒆 in 2001 that I hadn't read before and, of course, I want to share with you. Among the things 𝑺𝒕𝒆𝒇𝒂𝒏 tells us here are 𝑷𝒍𝒂𝒄𝒆𝒃𝒐's friendship with the 𝑮𝒆𝒓𝒎𝒂𝒏 band 𝑹𝒂𝒎𝒎𝒔𝒕𝒆𝒊𝒏, how he feels about being Swedish and about the then novelty of consuming music in digital format. 🔸𝐵𝑦 𝑃𝑒𝑡𝑡𝑒𝑟 𝐽𝑎𝒉𝑛𝑠𝑡𝑒𝑑𝑡

𝑷𝒍𝒂𝒄𝒆𝒃𝒐 is one of the most written about bands in the foreign music press. In 𝑺𝒘𝒆𝒅𝒆𝒏 you read a few reviews and a short interview in the evening papers, despite the fact that one of the country's biggest rock stars is in this international trio. Now they are in 𝑺𝒘𝒆𝒅𝒆𝒏.

They have played at 𝑫𝒂𝒗𝒊𝒅 𝑩𝒐𝒘𝒊𝒆's 50th birthday party, supported 𝑼𝟐 and had a dozen singles on the 𝑼𝑲 charts. Their third album has been showered with critical acclaim and with that behind them they have been on tour pretty much all year. As if that wasn't enough, they're being chased by all the world's press wherever they go. In 𝑺𝒘𝒆𝒅𝒆𝒏, however, 𝑺𝒕𝒆𝒇𝒂𝒏 and 𝑷𝒍𝒂𝒄𝒆𝒃𝒐 are relatively unknown. Mostly perhaps because 𝑺𝒕𝒆𝒇𝒂𝒏 didn't grow up in 𝑺𝒘𝒆𝒅𝒆𝒏, but most likely because the media doesn't know about it yet. The group will be playing a Swedish show at the 𝑨𝒓𝒗𝒊𝒌𝒂 𝑭𝒆𝒔𝒕𝒊𝒗𝒂𝒍 this summer, bringing with them songs from their incredibly strong album 𝑩𝒍𝒂𝒄𝒌 𝑴𝒂𝒓𝒌𝒆𝒕 𝑴𝒖𝒔𝒊𝒄. When they stopped off for a gig in 𝑨𝒎𝒔𝒕𝒆𝒓𝒅𝒂𝒎, I took the opportunity to call up the band's Swedish bassist 𝑺𝒕𝒆𝒇𝒂𝒏 𝑶𝒍𝒔𝒅𝒂𝒍. A few digits on the phone and presto.

📞 𝐇𝐨𝐰 𝐢𝐬 𝐢𝐭?
🔹It's 𝑺𝒕𝒆𝒇𝒂𝒏's manager who answers, but he quickly hands the phone over to 𝑺𝒕𝒆𝒇𝒂𝒏.

📞 𝐇𝐞𝐲, 𝐡𝐨𝐰'𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐭𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐠𝐨𝐢𝐧𝐠?
💬 We're a bit tired today, we visited our friends from Rammstein and celebrated that their album is number one in the German charts and typically only number two in the Swedish one, he laughs. We went to one of their favourite places yesterday, some goth club, that's their style. Otherwise, the tour has been going on for a while now, so the break yesterday was nice. Today we're playing here in Amsterdam after we've done a lot of Eastern Europe.

📞 𝐀𝐫𝐞 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐨𝐟𝐭𝐞𝐧 𝐨𝐮𝐭 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐨𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫 𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐬 𝐨𝐧 𝐭𝐨𝐮𝐫?
💬 Well, we met Rammstein at a festival in Australia and we have so much fun together, so it's always fun to meet them. Otherwise we are good friends with PJ Harvey's band and some others but we don't have time to meet many people during the tour as there are gigs almost every day.

📍𝑺𝒕𝒆𝒇𝒂𝒏 was born in 𝑺𝒘𝒆𝒅𝒆𝒏, but grew up in 𝑳𝒖𝒙𝒆𝒎𝒃𝒐𝒖𝒓𝒈 and went to the same school as the band's singer 𝑩𝒓𝒊𝒂𝒏 𝑴𝒐𝒍𝒌𝒐 . However, they hung out in different gangs at school. 𝑺𝒕𝒆𝒇𝒂𝒏 was popular, 𝑩𝒓𝒊𝒂𝒏 wasn't, if everything written about the band is to be believed. It wasn't until several years later that 𝑺𝒕𝒆𝒇𝒂𝒏 bumped into 𝑩𝒓𝒊𝒂𝒏 at 𝑲𝒆𝒏𝒔𝒊𝒏𝒈𝒕𝒐𝒏 𝑺𝒕𝒂𝒕𝒊𝒐𝒏 in 𝑳𝒐𝒏𝒅𝒐𝒏 and they decided to start a band together. I guess the question is how Swedish he feels today.

💬 I guess I have mixed feelings about Sweden, it's mostly personal, then we're not that big there, he says happily. I was born in Gothenburg but we moved to Vällingby outside Stockholm quite soon. I lived there until I was eight and then we moved to Luxembourg, as I said. It's been a while since I've been home now, but I try to make time to visit Sweden from time to time.

💬 We're all living in London now but I don't know how long we'll be there, there's so much disease and shit there now.

📞 𝐀𝐫𝐞 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐚 𝐯𝐞𝐠𝐞𝐭𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐚𝐧, 𝐛𝐞𝐜𝐚𝐮𝐬𝐞 𝐲𝐨𝐮'𝐫𝐞 𝐫𝐞𝐟𝐞𝐫𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐨 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐜𝐨𝐰𝐬, 𝐫𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭?
💬 No, that's very much why I want to get out of there. We've flown around so much that we don't feel at home anywhere, so moving doesn't feel strange in any way.


💫⭐ 𝐌𝐔𝐒𝐈𝐂 𝐓𝐇𝐄 𝐌𝐎𝐒𝐓 𝐈𝐌𝐏𝐎𝐑𝐓𝐀𝐍𝐓 ⭐ 💫
The group does not hide the fact that they are gay. 𝑺𝒕𝒆𝒇𝒂𝒏 points out to me that he is proud to be gay and that 𝑩𝒓𝒊𝒂𝒏 is too and that 𝑺𝒕𝒆𝒗𝒆 is bisexual. Often the media tries to focus on their orientation and other things, but as 𝑺𝒕𝒆𝒇𝒂𝒏 puts it himself:

💬 They're trying but they're not going to succeed.The music is the most important thing and no matter how you twist and turn Placebo's music, it is quite timeless. The first album could be the last if it weren't for the production.

💬 We were quite young when we made the "Placebo" album, I was only 19 years old. It was a low-budget production and we only had three weeks, so it probably feels more like a good demo today. The songs I think still hold up and I'm very happy with them. We still play a couple of songs from that record live.

💬 It's not that strange. Brian and Steve have been listening to hip-hop for a long time and in "Spite & Malice" in particular there was a hole that we didn't know what to do with. We knew the rapper Justin Warfield from before and we said; why not try him? That's the way it is, and the type of music. I think it was very successful so it might come back.

💬 I guess the three of us have in common that we all like PJ Harvey, and we hang out with her band a lot too. Her music is modern yet timeless, something I think our music is too, maybe that's why we like her. Otherwise, I guess I grew up with Depeche Mode as big idols. As a Swede I have listened to some Swedish synth bands too, Mobile Homes, but they have stopped now I think. Then I try to buy some Swedish music too. Lately I've been buying Kent's B-sides, Covenant, Bob Hund and Robots latest. Robot I think is very good, have you heard them?

💬 I don't think it's that strange. On the last album we use a lot of machines, which I think is natural because I grew up with that kind of music. On the first records we used more of a normal set up with guitar, bass, drums and vocals. This time I think it's more modern sound, but of course it still sounds Placebo.

💬 Napster is more like a jukebox, you discover music that you might otherwise never have come into contact with. I don't think it affects record sales either as the public still buys just as many records. Should it start to affect the sales of our records, it's not good, but for now it's okay.

To avoid confusion, I should put everything about this song in perspective:
𝐒𝐎𝐔𝐋𝐌𝐀𝐓𝐄𝐒 is a rockier, more guitar driven version of the studio song 𝐒𝐥𝐞𝐞𝐩𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐖𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐆𝐡𝐨𝐬𝐭𝐬 from the 2003 same-titled album.
This heavier version was released first as the 𝐛-𝐬𝐢𝐝𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐬𝐢𝐧𝐠𝐥𝐞 𝐓𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐏𝐢𝐜𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞 in 2003, and then also on the album 𝐒𝐥𝐞𝐞𝐩𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐖𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐆𝐡𝐨𝐬𝐭𝐬 𝐁-𝐬𝐢𝐝𝐞𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐩𝐢𝐥𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐚𝐥𝐛𝐮𝐦 𝐀 𝐏𝐥𝐚𝐜𝐞 𝐅𝐨𝐫 𝐔𝐬 𝐓𝐨 𝐃𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐦, 𝐛𝐨𝐭𝐡 𝐢𝐧 𝟐𝟎𝟏𝟔.
However, we all know this version from concerts, because Placebo included it in the setlist instead of the original Sleeping With Ghosts.

Another difference is that “Soulmates” was recorded at Livingstone Studios in London and produced by Dimitri Tikovoi while “Sleeping with ghosts” was recorded at The Townhouse Studios (also located in London) and produced by Jim Abbiss.

Brian changed the order of the verses in the chorus a little bit to make this lullaby absolutely perfect.

The prominent noisy guitars were swapped for piano and this again made space for Brian's even more challenging voice, turning the starkly punk version into a breathtaking confession of his desire for life change.

There is so much truth in those verses that touches me personally so I always feel very moved when I listen to this song.

I don't know how you feel, for me it is a song illuminated by spring rays, those that bring rebirth after a cruel, dark, hard winter. It is, along with Speak In Tongues, the most positive song on the whole album. The song directly calls out - look at us, after all we've been through, we rise like a mythical phoenix bird from the ashes, stronger, more beautiful, happier, full of faith in a better tomorrow.

The video for this song was directed by Heroes for Zeroes and is the 24th official video of Placebo's career.

It's an absolute contrast between lived anxiety and rediscovered hope, the duality between darkness and light seems to confirm the theme not only of this song, but of the entire album.

🌹The single managed to chart at number 11 on the UK Singles Chart, number 46 in Australia, and number 99 in Germany.

🌹It was voted from a poll of 500,000 votes to be ranked number 83 on the list of the Hottest 100 of All Time in July 2009, conducted by Australian radio station Triple J.

🌹The single was released as a 2-CD set and on cassette, but promotional copies on 12-inch vinyl also exist.

🌹This song was used as the theme song for the famous American drama ⭐𝐂𝐑𝐔𝐄𝐋 𝐈𝐍𝐓𝐄𝐍𝐓𝐈𝐎𝐍𝐒⭐ with Ryan Phillippe, Reese Witherspoon, Selma Blair and Sarah Michelle Gellar. This film is based on the 1782 novel "𝐃𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐞𝐫𝐨𝐮𝐬 𝐋𝐢𝐚𝐢𝐬𝐨𝐧𝐬" 𝐛𝐲 𝐂𝐡𝐨𝐝𝐞𝐫𝐥𝐨𝐬 𝐝𝐞 𝐋𝐚𝐜𝐥𝐨𝐬, which is set in the present day.

The plot concerns two high school step siblings from New York's high society, who are forever at war with each other and scheme and manipulate other people to achieve their goals, including sex and revenge. I think 𝐄𝐕𝐄𝐑𝐘 𝐘𝐎𝐔 𝐄𝐕𝐄𝐑𝐘 𝐌𝐄 is a great choice for the overall experience of this drama. The lyrics reflect the tone and plot of the film, especially Ryan's character Sebastian.
Following a bet with his evil sister, he decides to hurt a girl who is very vulnerable and naive, and as a result, everything comes to an inescapably tragic end.

It was 1999. MTV channel was playing on the TV. The first notes of the song came on, and the singer's voice rang inside my chest. That was my "Wooow PLACEBO!!!" first time. With my arms full - washed clothes in one hand and my almost one-year-old daughter in the other and a baby dummy in my mouth - I stood in front of the television and for several minutes I could not take my eyes off the ambiguous singing being. These memories are still as vivid and strong as if it were yesterday...

BLIND has been performed live 179 times, five of which were part of the setlist at intimate shows in 2022.

Fans can only speculate what all of Brian's experiences are in the lyrics of this painful ballad, as according to the quotes, the song Blind is mainly Stefan's child.
But a song is often created by a team... Someone suggests a musical line on the guitar or piano, someone comes up with a piece of verse...

⭐For me, this ballad has always evoked my personal memory of a relationship between lovers that was affected by drug addiction.

It was about my friends from my youth and their suffering that almost resulted in the death of that girl. Fortunately, she eventually came out of her coma in the hospital and entered a drug addiction treatment facility.

Nevertheless, it was the end of great love, because the boy's parents, fearing for their son's life, moved so far away that the two lovers could no longer see each other. Life sometimes brings experiences that are very cruel and take a painful place in our souls for the rest of our lives.

Thanks to these experiences of my friends, I can't forget the very special movie 🔹'𝐑𝐞𝐪𝐮𝐢𝐞𝐦 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐚 𝐃𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐦'🔹, in which 𝐉𝐚𝐫𝐞𝐝 𝐋𝐞𝐭𝐨 played the main role. I agree with the fan who used bits from this movie as the 'official' video for the BLIND song.

⭐The song was written during a soundcheck in Leipzig on Placebo’s first German tour in October 1996, and was one of the first songs to be written for the album, along with 𝑺𝒄𝒂𝒓𝒆𝒅 𝑶𝒇 𝑮𝒊𝒓𝒍𝒔.

Nicholas Elliot is an American-French director, actor, and writer. He was born in Massachusetts (USA) in 1974 and grew up in France and Luxembourg. He studied theater and cinema in Paris where he lived for 6 years.
Besides translating Burger Queen into French, Nicholas designed 𝒗𝒊𝒔𝒖𝒂𝒍𝒔 𝒇𝒐𝒓 𝒔𝒐𝒎𝒆 𝑷𝒍𝒂𝒄𝒆𝒃𝒐 𝒄𝒐𝒏𝒄𝒆𝒓𝒕𝒔 and together with Russell Thomas, worked on the video compilation 𝑶𝒏𝒄𝒆 𝑴𝒐𝒓𝒆 𝑾𝒊𝒕𝒉 𝑭𝒆𝒆𝒍𝒊𝒏𝒈 (2004) released on DVD. He also directed a short film 𝑺𝒖𝒆'𝒔 𝑳𝒂𝒔𝒕 𝑹𝒊𝒅𝒆 with Brian as an executive producer.

It is a very sad story. The character in this song is in the wrong place at the wrong time. It's one of the worst things to be in the wrong place. 📢𝐁𝐫𝐢𝐚𝐧: "I've always been a loner. The three of us were, we spent our teenage years locked in our rooms, playing music. And like many boys of that age, I dreamed of becoming a star. A city like Luxembourg can be stifling when you are trying to create an identity. I couldn't be myself there. I felt isolated, far from the places I wanted to be. There was no place where I could express myself, find an echo. From this isolation I made songs, Teenage Angst or Burger Queen, because it inevitably turned me into a voyeur. Which is not the most enviable position to observe the world."

𝐒𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐲 𝐒𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐭𝐨𝐧: Maybe your European upbringing allows you to get away with lyrics that you wouldn't have dared use if you'd been brought up speaking English in the UK or America. I'm thinking especially of those rhymes in 'Burger Queen'...
📢𝐁𝐫𝐢𝐚𝐧: That's the whole point of a song like 'Burger Queen' sort of like structurally or if you're talking about it from a musical standpoint. The whole point of that song is to use a cheesy rhyme but to use words like infection, you know, connection, erection, you know. So it's subverting the cheesiness. It's like putting fuck and baby in the same verse.

𝐒𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐲 𝐒𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐭𝐨𝐧: I bet it's also the first time caesarean section's been used in a pop song!
📢𝐁𝐫𝐢𝐚𝐧: I know, I'm so, so proud of that. I'm so proud of that one. (laughs)

𝐒𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐲 𝐒𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐭𝐨𝐧: Is that song based on a real person?
📢𝐁𝐫𝐢𝐚𝐧: No, that one's kind of more of a story really. It's kind of about being in the wrong place at the wrong time you know and I guess you just finally... since we kind of grew up in Luxembourg - finally since we've written a song about it we can kind of forget about it now. But you know I think it's just... the play on Burger King, Burger Queen, Luxemburger, just kind of you know amused me when I first came up with it and along with 'My Sweet Prince' I think it's one of the saddest songs, but really beautiful, that we've written. I think there's a real beauty in our sadness you know when it goes down there there's something in it that really pulls at your heart, you know, and I don't know how we really achieve it but it's there. There always seems to be a tiny bit of hope at the end of it as well which is important."

💥To make this anniversary post a little bit different and more interesting for you, I decided to add excerpts from 𝑻𝒉𝒊𝒆𝒓𝒓𝒚 𝑫𝒆𝒔𝒂𝒖𝒍𝒆𝒔’ book 𝐏𝐋𝐀𝐂𝐄𝐁𝐎. 𝐑𝐎𝐂𝐊 𝐒𝐔𝐑 𝐎𝐑𝐃𝐎𝐍𝐍𝐀𝐍𝐂𝐄 (2009) which I translated for you. From its first chapter, 𝐋𝐮𝐱𝐞𝐦𝐛𝐨𝐮𝐫𝐠𝐞𝐫 𝐊𝐢𝐧𝐠𝐬, part 1 𝐈𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐆𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐃𝐮𝐜𝐡𝐲, we can feel the atmosphere of this tiny bourgeois country and learn more of Brian’s childhood.

Having passed Lorraine, finding yourself in the Grand Duchy comes a true shock. Just a few steps from the rapeseed fields close to the former mine basin, and the border clearly warns of the inevitability of the shock coming: alcohol and cigarettes at a price that can withstand any competition, signs in two languages: French and Luxembourgish. The latter resembles distorted German with guttural sounds.

Very quickly, the roads turn into avenues lined with tall buildings with signs of the of the largest commercial banks on the planet; luxury multifunctional cars and high-end sports cars are proudly displayed in front of them. No one walks here, people mostly drive in soft silence, muffled by financial well-being.

It was in this universe of comfort and slowness that the childhood and adolescence of young Brian Molko passed. Within this reliable but terribly predictable world, the young guy couldn’t find his place. He felt completely out of touch with his older brother and couldn't find any suitable cultural pursuits for himself. “My teenage years were dark, filled with loneliness and boredom. I felt out of place. All the time I was waiting for something special to happen and turn my whole life upside down.” (Brian Molko)

“What was great about Luxembourg, that’s its extremely international community. I grew up surrounded by children of various nationalities. I think, it made me open to different cultures, different traditions at an early age. And that taught me a lot. It taught me tolerance and understanding towards others. I think it's very important." Next to his mother and older brother, his life flowed like a long and very calm river. Constantly busy with his own affairs and being in endless departures due to his business, Brian's father was very rarely at home. It’s the lack of paternal attention that future leader of Placebo would later call an important factor that had a huge impact on his personality.
“My father is an American financial freak. Of course, in a family where there was no place for any artistic aspirations, I felt like a black sheep. Nobody believed in me. So, I locked myself in my room and learned to play guitar." (Brian Molko)

“When I was a kid, we often drove somewhere in the family van, and my parents listened to The Beatles, The Kinks and other bands like that on the road. I was put to bed to the Elton John’s music … The Bee Gees and questionable masterpieces of The Wings, but at the age of 7 you can’t protest, you have to endure. My father was a big fan of Buddy Holly. It was really cool because my friends’ parents loved Elvis and I was kind of an anti-Elvis." (Brian Molko)

Studying at the prestigious American International School of Luxembourg, founded in 1962 as Dupont School, Brian was languishing; the only thing that fascinated him was drama course. Being a fragail and insecure boy, he was lost in the crowd of diplomats and bankers’ children he studied with. That close presence of the arrogant offspring of American financiers convinced him to never ever live in countries where people of his father’s job do.

Molko suffered of deep frustration and to replace it, he often visited Luxembourg bars of – which bothered his parents a lot. Unlike the little American bourgeois around him, he didn’t do any sports and instead, he escaped to the Netherlands where he also visited local bars with a wide range of psychotropic substances

“The Luxembourg school is the worst thing that happened in my life. I had to quit the high school because I was constantly bullied there. I used to provoke others, including the guys two times bigger than myself. Standing in front of a small, frail boy, they didn’t dare to hit. I remember that once, they hang me up by my feet at a height of six meters. If they had untied the rope then, I would definitely have my neck broken. So, I looked into the eyes of death at a very young age." (Brian Molko)

My memory is still very vivid. Our whole house was already asleep, I was sitting in bed buried in pillows, the lit candles materialized the shadows and the incense stick made the perfect atmosphere.

And at exactly midnight, something fantastic came. Pure Placebo like a cut diamond. The lyrics, which didn't make much sense, still filled me with a dark melancholy. The strange sound of the drums in the middle of the night was absolutely hypnotic, Brian's voice repeating the monotonous verses brought me almost to the edge of a trance. And the ending with the piano was simply "Wooow... I didn't expect that...". Since then I wanted to hear it again and again.

So let's now celebrate this one year birthday by telling you everything we already know about this song and maybe a little something new.

This song was based on Brian's realization that he was being spied on by his neighbors who did not respect his privacy.. Unfortunately, this always happens when you live near a celebrity. However, with the advent of technology, virtually every smartphone owner has become a potential paparazzo.

Thanks to Brian giving us an explanation for this song, we have a clearer idea of why it was created.

From this song, I sense an indictment of all of us for allowing these technologies to take over our daily lives. Not only do we silently suffer from CCTV in big companies because we care about money, about our livelihood. Not just that cameras in the streets have crept into our actual reality and intimacy. But we ourselves contribute to it very frivolously by sharing the details of our lives with 'Big Brother' on a daily basis. The mobile phone has become our most faithful companion, searching for a contact with a live person is second only.

“I'm a child of the 80s. In my days there were no surveillance cameras every few meters and the phones were still connected to the wall by a cable. My son's world can not compared to mine. He enjoys the progress. But what is the bill for this motley present and future that is waiting for him at some point. He has lost the freedom to walk down the streets without ending up in the sights of a surveillance camera.
I hate these things. And his cell phone is de facto a control medium. It holds him hostage but of course he doesn't see it. He only knows the dopamine kick that calls him to scroll again and again.“

Brian's concern about the enormous impact of these technologies led me to yet another term.

Do you know the term 🔹𝐋𝐮𝐝𝐝𝐢𝐬𝐦 and the resulting 𝐍𝐞𝐨-𝐋𝐮𝐝𝐝𝐢𝐬𝐦?🔹

🔹𝐋𝐮𝐝𝐝𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐬 - members of a secret organization of English textile workers in the 19th century. They protested the boom in the textile industry by destroying the newly invented weaving machines for fear of losing their jobs.
From this comes the term 🔹𝐍𝐞𝐨-𝐥𝐮𝐝𝐝𝐢𝐬𝐦 - used to describe someone who is opposed or resistant to new technologies.

When it comes to Placebo lyrics, generally, on all the albums there were elements of personal, emotional honesty. I think that we’ve realized that it’s what makes the song universal - if you make it personal, sing of what you’ve experienced on this planet, whatever the feeling may be. We always discovered the darkest sides of human psyche and human’s emotions which are not easy to talk about, to acknowledge that we have sometimes. So I think this track is continuing in that way.“

In my opinion, with this song and the seemingly unrelated verses of the lyrics, Brian is expressing his concern about our being overwhelmed by all the different virtual media we have let into our lives.

When you read the verses, they don't seem to put together any story. It's as if headlines and bits of news from various sites across the internet are running in front of our eyes.

Can you see that now? It's another one of the masterpieces of the last Placebo album.

To create this song, Brian used a special method - the ⭐"cut-up technique"⭐, which was used by the writer and representative of the 𝐁𝐞𝐚𝐭 𝐌𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭, 𝐖𝐢𝐥𝐥𝐢𝐚𝐦 𝐁𝐮𝐫𝐫𝐨𝐮𝐠𝐡𝐬, and which the unforgettable icon David Bowie fell in love with, and even made his own computer program for this method of creation.
