Hi soulmates,
it's another Wednesday with no important Placebo anniversary, so we meet again for our series of lullabies.

With today's beautiful ballad, we end the era of the Battle For The Sun album, which was not too inclined to slow songs compared to the previous Meds album.

Here we see that this also confirms the departure from the dark Med's ballads towards the light, which does not eliminate the problems of human coexistence, but helps to see them more clearly and positively.

”There is definitely a bigger sense of hope and optimism on this record, but Placebo's music and lyrics are never going to be like a dance in a field of flowers you know? There is always the fascination in there with the darker side of human emotions.”

It's the tenth track on the BFTS album, right after Julien, whose energetic sound makes us dance... and then comes this bitter-ironic-melancholic and very emotional ballad.

"A melodic break-up song, ‘Happy You’re Gone’ is rumoured to be about the band’s split from former drummer Steve Hewitt (although this has never been confirmed) and finds Molko in turmoil on its chorus “How many times? How many times? Now I can't look you in the eye”. The swelling strings and more restrained pace were a marker of this period of Placebo, pointing to the direction they’d take on next album Loud Like Love."

Okay, it could just be another sad song symbolizing the end of a relationship between two people.
But this lullaby describes exactly the state where you convince your mind that this stage of life is over, while your heart is full of living painful wounds, bleeding and crying.
And Brian really knows how to get me into these emotions.

Not only with his lyrics, but especially with his voice.

How gently he begins...

See me, in the eyes of another's child
Turn away, when you see me walking by
Once in a while
This melody will fade away and die
Just for today, breathe me and say goodbye
How many times? How many times?

How many times? How many times?
Now I can't look you in the eye
And I don't even want to try
My my

Now I can't look you in the eye
How many times? How many times?

Could this be a song about Steve Hewitt's bitter departure from the band? It certainly can, and many of you think so.
Honestly, I don't care whose departure cut such deep wounds in Brian's heart that he wrote this song.

Anyway, Brian has been at pains to point out in concerts

It's also possible that Brian is getting a little tired of people making so many parallels, searching for direct connections between each line of every song and his private life...
However, with Brian's sense of poisonous irony, we can also count on the fact that this was someone very important in his life...and maybe it's the rendition of more such relationship breakdowns, just suddenly, in some strange melancholic mood, this ballad was born in the composer's mind.

But...
...at the end of the video from ๐‚๐ข๐ซ๐ช๐ฎ๐ž ๐‘๐จ๐ฒ๐š๐ฅ ๐ข๐ง ๐๐ซ๐ฎ๐ฌ๐ฌ๐ž๐ฅ๐ฌ, ๐๐ž๐ฅ๐ ๐ข๐ฎ๐ฆ ๐จ๐ง ๐‰๐ฎ๐ง๐ž ๐Ÿ, ๐Ÿ๐ŸŽ๐ŸŽ๐Ÿ— I'm sharing with you, Brian said something very special๐Ÿ’—.

Can this help us to better understand this lullaby?

What made Brian make such a tender statement to all the men in the venue?
We probably won't know the exact reason.

But my thoughts lead me to the topic of men's mental health, which concerns both Brian and Stefan personally and Olga had the same idea in one of her old posts.
While preparing a post about Project Alpha, I learned that the percentage of male suicides in the UK is on the rise. The social paradigm is mainly to blame, it's the pressure that leads men to suppress their emotions because that's how the male role in society has historically been set up. And it is clear that this topic does not only concern men in the UK...
And since human consciousness has been undergoing a profound transformation in recent years, it is time to say:

Soulmates, I hope you enjoy this lullaby as much as I do. And again I will be glad for your open hearts. Let me know in the comments if this song also touches you emotionally and if it connects you with a bittersweet memory. And what do you think of Brian's words at the end of the song?

๐‘ท๐’๐’‚๐’„๐’†๐’ƒ๐’ is one of the most written about bands in the foreign music press. In ๐‘บ๐’˜๐’†๐’…๐’†๐’ you read a few reviews and a short interview in the evening papers, despite the fact that one of the country's biggest rock stars is in this international trio. Now they are in ๐‘บ๐’˜๐’†๐’…

They have played at ๐‘ซ๐’‚๐’—๐’Š๐’… ๐‘ฉ๐’๐’˜๐’Š๐’†'s 50th birthday party, supported ๐‘ผ๐Ÿ and had a dozen singles on the ๐‘ผ๐‘ฒ charts. Their third album has been showered with critical acclaim and with that behind them they have been on tour pretty much all year. As if that wasn't enough, they're being chased by all the world's press wherever they go. In ๐‘บ๐’˜๐’†๐’…๐’†๐’, however, ๐‘บ๐’•๐’†๐’‡๐’‚๐’ and ๐‘ท๐’๐’‚๐’„๐’†๐’ƒ๐’ are relatively unknown. Mostly perhaps because ๐‘บ๐’•๐’†๐’‡๐’‚๐’ didn't grow up in ๐‘บ๐’˜๐’†๐’…๐’†๐’, but most likely because the media doesn't know about it yet. ๐Ÿ’ฌ We're a bit tired today, we visited our friends from Rammstein and celebrated that their album is number one in the German charts and typically only number two in the Swedish one, he laughs. We went to one of their favourite places yesterday, some goth club, that's their style. Otherwise, the tour has been going on for a while now, so the break yesterday was nice. Today we're playing here in Amsterdam after we've done a lot of Eastern Europe.

๐Ÿ’ฌ Well, we met Rammstein at a festival in Australia and we have so much fun together, so it's always fun to meet them. Otherwise we are good friends with PJ Harvey's band and some others but we don't have time to meet many people during the tour as there are gigs almost every day.

The group does not hide the fact that they are gay. ๐‘บ๐’•๐’†๐’‡๐’‚๐’ points out to me that he is proud to be gay and that ๐‘ฉ๐’“๐’Š๐’‚๐’ is too and that ๐‘บ๐’•๐’†๐’—๐’† is bisexual. Often the media tries to focus on their orientation and other things, but as ๐‘บ๐’•๐’†๐’‡๐’‚๐’ puts it himself:

๐Ÿ’ฌ They're trying but they're not going to succeed. The music is the most important thing and no matter how you twist and turn Placebo's music, it is quite timeless. The first album could be the last if it weren't for the production.

๐Ÿ’ฌ We were quite young when we made the "Placebo" album, I was only 19 years old. It was a low-budget production and we only had three weeks, so it probably feels more like a good demo today. The songs I think still hold up and I'm very happy with them. We still play a couple of songs from that record live.

๐Ÿ’ฌ It's not that strange. Brian and Steve have been listening to hip-hop for a long time and in "Spite & Malice" in particular there was a hole that we didn't know what to do with. We knew the rapper Justin Warfield from before and we said; why not try him? That's the way it is, and the type of music. I think it was very successful so it might come back.

๐Ÿ’ฌ I guess the three of us have in common that we all like PJ Harvey, and we hang out with her band a lot too. Her music is modern yet timeless, something I think our music is too, maybe that's why we like her. Otherwise, I guess I grew up with Depeche Mode as big idols. As a Swede I have listened to some Swedish synth bands too, Mobile Homes, but they have stopped now I think. Then I try to buy some Swedish music too. Lately I've been buying Kent's B-sides, Covenant, Bob Hund and Robots latest. Robot I think is very good, have you heard them?

๐Ÿ’ฌ I don't think it's that strange. On the last album we use a lot of machines, which I think is natural because I grew up with that kind of music. ๐Ÿ’ฌ Napster is more like a jukebox, you discover music that you might otherwise never have come into contact with. I don't think it affects record sales either as the public still buys just as many records. Should it start to affect the sales of our records, it's not good, but for now it's okay.

I don't know how you feel, for me it is a song illuminated by spring rays, those that bring rebirth after a cruel, dark, hard winter. It is, along with Speak In Tongues, the most positive song on the whole album. The song directly calls out - look at us, after all we've been through, we rise like a mythical phoenix bird from the ashes, stronger, more beautiful, happier, full of faith in a better tomorrow.

"Let me put it this way — I have a theory about drugs and alcohol. There is a limited amount that a human being is able to consume in a course of a lifetime. Some people are sensible and consume the amount that’s able to stretch a lifetime. Some people who are not so sensible, like me and Stefan, consume that limited amount in a period of about 10 years. There comes a point that it doesn’t do anything for you that isn’t negative. In fact, it destroys your life and you lose everything. Then one has to either surrender to that, which most people do, which begins the inevitable descent to nothingness and emptiness. Or one takes the courageous step to try and rebuild one's life in a more positive way, which was what Stefan and I decided to do. It was one life choice and a major philosophical influence on the record."

Anyway, for Placebo it's a very atypical song, very original, it could be played on mainstream radio from morning till night as a pop rock anthem, spread that positivity to all listeners and it wouldn't be bad at all.

Cast your mind back to the days
When I’d pretend I was okay
I had so very much to say
About my crazy living
Now that I’ve stared into the void
So many people I’ve annoyed
I have to find a middle way,
A better way of giving

So I haven’t given up
But all my choices, my good luck
Appeared to go and get me stuck
In an open prison
Now I am trying to break free
Be in a state of empathy
Find the true and inner me
Eradicate the schism

No-one can take it away from me
And no-one can tear it apart
Because a heart that hurts is a heart that works
A heart that hurts is a heart that works

A heart that hurts is a heart that works

No-one can take it away from me
And no-one can tear it apart
It may be elaborate fantasy
But it’s the perfect place to start

Because a heart that hurts is a heart that works
A heart that hurts is a heart that works

The video for this song was directed by Heroes for Zeroes and is the 24th official video of Placebo's career.

It's an absolute contrast between lived anxiety and rediscovered hope, the duality between darkness and light seems to confirm the theme not only of this song, but of the entire album.
๐Ÿ”น๐Ÿ’ฌ ๐’๐“๐„๐…๐€๐: “I mean that there seems to be quite a lot of light and dark themes with this record in terms of the album cover as the beginning. With the solar eclipse, you go to the light from the darkness to light it down. ๐ŸฅฐBrian's great mood, his smile and his bright eyes when he finds out technical problems with Bill Loyd's non-functioning bass guitar during the song are definitely worth seeing.
Hopefully this anniversary post brought good mood to your hearts as well.

Dear friends, many of us experience these winter days worse than the rest of the year.

Short sunshine, cold weather, snow and frost...
In connection with various hardships in life, this period causes a more frequent tendency to depression and gloomy thoughts in many people, the world seems sadder, darker.

When you add to all of this the troubles with love, with the end of a relationship, when we are shocked, angry, aggressive or just totally desperate, it can knock us down to the very bottom.

For today's post, I have chosen a song that is the perfect anthem for all broken hearts.

A perfect, heartbreaking anthem about the end of love. A drama about despair expressed in very moving words and complemented by a gentle combination of guitar and piano accompanied by a drum machine...

“๐๐‹๐ˆ๐๐ƒ” was written and recorded around 2002 when Placebo were working on covers with producer Dimitri Tikovoi.

Stefan: “We didn't want to make a B-side of it, so we kept the original recording for this album [“Meds”, released in 2006], just with vocals redone and more overdubs."

BLIND has been performed live 179 times, five of which were part of the setlist at intimate shows in 2022.

Lucky everyone who experienced this anthem about unrequited love live.

Okay, so anyone who thought this song came from Brian's broken heart, might be wrong.

Fans can only speculate what all of Brian's experiences are in the lyrics of this painful ballad, as according to the quotes, the song Blind is mainly Stefan's child.
But a song is often created by a team... Someone suggests a musical line on the guitar or piano, someone comes up with a piece of verse...

"There’re no rules in fact. We try to stay very open. When it’s me that make the song, I can begin with a voice melody, when it’s Stefan, it more with a guitar, and when it’s Steve, it’s with drums. We can also begin with a piano line that Stef or me find accidentally, It’s often accidental."

I think that even the verses for Blind were created as a team, partly by Stefan, supplemented and completed by Brian. .. maybe...

๐Ÿ”น๐Ÿ’ฌ You have often been accused of being an intellectual band, sometimes you use somewhat complex phrasings. But for me, as you said, you're a band with a dark romanticism mood and I can not help but quote one of the most beautiful sentences that I have ever read in a song. Here's the quote. This is an excerpt from the title Blind.

⭐For me, this ballad has always evoked my personal memory of a relationship between lovers that was affected by drug addiction.

It was about my friends from my youth and their suffering that almost resulted in the death of that girl. Fortunately, she eventually came out of her coma in the hospital and entered a drug addiction treatment facility.

Nevertheless, it was the end of great love, because the boy's parents, fearing for their son's life, moved so far away that the two lovers could no longer see each other. Life sometimes brings experiences that are very cruel and take a painful place in our souls for the rest of our lives.

Thanks to these experiences of my friends, I can't forget the very special movie ๐Ÿ”น'๐‘๐ž๐ช๐ฎ๐ข๐ž๐ฆ ๐Ÿ๐จ๐ซ ๐š ๐ƒ๐ซ๐ž๐š๐ฆ'๐Ÿ”น, in which ๐‰๐š๐ซ๐ž๐ ๐‹๐ž๐ญ๐จ played the main role.
Do you notice how we gradually move from the earliest Placebo albums to the next ones? I may have missed some songs, but this is a pilgrimage of lullabies that please my soul, and of course not everyone necessarily agrees with my choice.
My main goal is to continue to take you through slow versions of Placebo's fast rock hits.
Today's choice fell on a song from the ๐Œ๐„๐ƒ๐’ ๐š๐ฅ๐›๐ฎ๐ฆ:

๐Ÿ”นWhen I first heard this song on the Meds album, it seemed like a clear straight return to the old Placebo. A great song with not too complicated text that again, as is usual with Brian's lyrics, can be interpreted in multiple ways.

๐Ÿ”นBut true love only came with the slow version that I heard for the first time - in a live performance at the M6 Private concert in 2006.
Suddenly the lyrics is more speculated.. More contradictory...
Do you feel the same way?
That the rhythm and musical arrangement will change your perception of the text?

๐Ÿ”นOriginally a very brisk song, it seems to indicate a clear solution - things are the way they are (narrator's alcoholism) and you, my love, make your choice, because you know I want you anyway...

๐Ÿ”นBut once the rhythm of the song slows down, the narrator's greater indecision becomes apparent. He knows that his actions (alcohol) are destroying their beautiful relationship.

๐ŸŽค Well, that's the challenging equilibrium you try and strike every time you make a new record: trying to push the boundaries and limits of your sound without repeating yourself. You have to try to do something new, exciting and fresh with the band's sound and play with the band's conceived identity, but at the same time not disregarding what makes you uniquely 'you'.

๐ŸŽค I think so! The greater the body of work, the more difficult it becomes to write a fresh song; it becomes a lot more challenging. As far as longevity is concerned, I think if you look at the careers of the likes of The Cure or Depeche Mode - I use those examples because they both released albums this year, 30 years into their career - well they've made music, since day one, purely on their own terms, unaffected, unconcerned by trends, movements and fashion in music. They followed their own path and stuck to their guns, and I think that's why they're still making records which are still worthwhile listening. We're 15 years in, and that's where I'd like to be in another 15. It's not like we have any other options; we're basically unemployable, you know, so this is it.

๐ŸŽค I started looking back on my career around the time of Meds [fifth studio album, released in 2006]. As a lyricist I thought I was using a great deal of gimmicks. For example, the whole chemistry/medicine cabinet routine that is Commercial for Levi or a song title that screams 'Look at Me!' that is Nancy Boy! I made a decision that I wanted to stop using gimmicks and address the bigger questions in more everyday language where possible, and try and simplify it, I suppose. Say more by saying less, that's kinda the trip I'm on right now.

๐ŸŽค Everybody who writes wants to write stuff that's timeless and doesn't date, really. I think you have to be very careful if you want to do that. You have to tap into the spirit of the age but at the same time write something that transcends it. I don't think that using incredibly culturally specific language enables you to do that. So, I'm trying to transcend that and write something that can stand up to the music that I grew up listening to. Take Leonard Cohen, for example. There's a universality in his music and a simplicity which makes it appreciable and meaningful in any decade, any century really. I think that's what I'm trying to do, hopefully in some way making a difference.

๐ŸŽค It's good to have an intelligent person running one of the most powerful countries and someone who generally cares. I'm less sympathetic towards the economic problems that exist right now than some people might be, because I have never been able to understand the whole culture of living beyond your means. I mean, I've been unemployed for a long time, I've been homeless, I've slept in train stations and I didn't spend money that didn't belong to me. So I find it difficult to be incredibly sympathetic with the culture of avarice that has got us into this position.

The other thing that annoys me about this whole focus on our economic woes is that nobody is talking about the environment anymore, and if anything is going to get us in the ass, it's going to be that. The hole in the ozone layer is still there, 20 years after they discovered it, and it's getting bigger and bigger, yet this isn't news. I want to be involved in the world. I think it comes from being a parent; you want to try and contribute to make a place for your children to grow up in that's hopefully a little bit better than where you were. Unfortunately, it seems that we are heading straight towards some form of environmental armageddon, and perhaps we deserve to go the same way as the dinosaurs for our treatment of the planet.

I'm a big fan of unconventional interviews like this one with Brian about the Seven Deadly Sins and which of them he is guilty of. I find such unusual approaches always very interesting and worth reading, how about you?.

Vanity, envy, gluttony, lust, wrath, greed and sloth... can you guess Brian's favourite sin? And which ones are the sins you commited from this list? Not to brag, soulmates, but it seems I only left out one of the seven capital sins in my life so far. In other words: My score is 6/7. And yours?

Outspoken in the press, dolled-up on stage and once one of the most notorious party animals on the scene, Brian Molko isn't shy of breaking a few rules. Who better then, to quiz about the Seven Deadly Sins?

๐Ÿ. ๐Ÿ”ป๐•๐€๐๐ˆ๐“๐˜๐Ÿ”บ
“That's a good one. I'm the vainest of the band, definitely. Myself and Stefan spend a lot of time in front of the mirror playing with our hair and worrying about our clothes. I have a lot of “Does my bum look big in this?“ moments. I think it winds Steve [Hewitt] up a bit, but he's a vain guy too, only in a more masculine way. It's a very big part of what we do I suppose and a very big part of what pushes you to go on stage. I don't think there'd be as much dressing up on stage if there weren't a great deal of vanity involved. So I'm 100 percent guilty.“

๐Ÿ. ๐Ÿ”ป๐„๐๐•๐˜๐Ÿ”บ
“Envy makes me think of that moment in Spinal Tap where the band meet some rock star who's bigger than them and they're all nice and friendly. Then when he walks away they call him a wanker. I'm guilty of that moment as well, though the bands it's with will remain nameless. But I'm envious of lots of things. I'm envious of people with better bodies than me, people who are taller than I am.“

๐Ÿ‘.๐Ÿ”ป๐†๐‹๐”๐“๐“๐Ž๐๐˜๐Ÿ”บ
“I think I'm coming out of my secret over-indulgent stage. That was basically most of my 20ies where I'd take anything that was going and too much of it at any opportunity. I think it was very much a case of trying to numb a lot of my insecurities and low self-esteem by putting myself in a haze and avoiding reality. I'm better now, thankfully.“

๐Ÿ’. ๐Ÿ”ป๐‹๐”๐’๐“๐Ÿ”บ
“Oh, my favourite! I'm a very lustful person, mainly towards other people. My lust means I have huge moral dilemmas on a daily basis. It's got me into far too much trouble. But unfortunately, no matter how much make-up I put on my face I can't alter the fact that I'm a man.“

๐Ÿ“. ๐Ÿ”ป๐–๐‘๐€๐“๐‡๐Ÿ”บ
“I don't get angry that often, but when I do it's in a way that's quite particular to people who are small in stature – when they lose it they really fucking lose it. It's a bit like a pressure cooker, I have a tendency to let it build up inside of me then really blow and go apeshit. I start throwing stuff around and screaming. It's not very healthy and it's not a pretty sight. I get very upset when people treat us with disrespect in life in general. I have this feeling that people treat me like a kid a lot and look down their noses at me. That makes me very angry. But I think it's a kick back to things from my childhood that I haven't got over.“

๐Ÿ”. ๐Ÿ”ป๐†๐‘๐„๐„๐ƒ๐Ÿ”บ
“I'm not a particularly greedy person, I'm actually quite generous towards the people that I love and care about. I'd like to be filthy rich but then everybody would. I'm not obsessed with material possessions that much apart from records and clothes. I just don't see the point really. Being in a band doesn't make you greedier, it makes you more ambitious because every time you meet a challenge you have to set new ones and try and rise to those.“

๐Ÿ•. ๐Ÿ”ป๐’๐‹๐Ž๐“๐‡๐Ÿ”บ
“I go through stages but in general I'm a hard worker, I always have been. I find it difficult to take breakes because I'm so used to each day being full, I just get restless and I have to force myself to relax. But when I do get the chance I just do absolutely nothing. I'll sit around for days and try to shut my brain off, watch Neighbours twice a day. You feel a bit lost when you come off tour because there's no one to make your coffee for you or light your cigarettes!“

My memory is still very vivid. Our whole house was already asleep, I was sitting in bed buried in pillows, the lit candles materialized the shadows and the incense stick made the perfect atmosphere.

And at exactly midnight, something fantastic came. Pure Placebo like a cut diamond. The lyrics, which didn't make much sense, still filled me with a dark melancholy. The strange sound of the drums in the middle of the night was absolutely hypnotic, Brian's voice repeating the monotonous verses brought me almost to the edge of a trance. And the ending with the piano was simply "Wooow... I didn't expect that...". Since then I wanted to hear it again and again.

So let's now celebrate this one year birthday by telling you everything we already know about this song and maybe a little something new.

This song was based on Brian's realization that he was being spied on by his neighbors who did not respect his privacy.. Unfortunately, this always happens when you live near a celebrity. However, with the advent of technology, virtually every smartphone owner has become a potential paparazzo.

Thanks to Brian giving us an explanation for this song, we have a clearer idea of why it was created.

From this song, I sense an indictment of all of us for allowing these technologies to take over our daily lives. Not only do we silently suffer from CCTV in big companies because we care about money, about our livelihood. Not just that cameras in the streets have crept into our actual reality and intimacy. But we ourselves contribute to it very frivolously by sharing the details of our lives with 'Big Brother' on a daily basis. The mobile phone has become our most faithful companion, searching for a contact with a live person is second only.

“I'm a child of the 80s. In my days there were no surveillance cameras every few meters and the phones were still connected to the wall by a cable. My son's world can not compared to mine. He enjoys the progress. But what is the bill for this motley present and future that is waiting for him at some point. He has lost the freedom to walk down the streets without ending up in the sights of a surveillance camera.
I hate these things. And his cell phone is de facto a control medium. It holds him hostage but of course he doesn't see it. He only knows the dopamine kick that calls him to scroll again and again.“

๐Ÿ“ŒThe video for ‘Surrounded By Spies’ is shot from the perspective of CCTV cameras. Their faces — filtered and warped — appear on the artwork for the first time ever, for singles ‘Beautiful James’ and ‘Surrounded By Spies’. Nowhere in the material do you see Molko or Olsdal clearly, which feeds into the ever-present theme of surveillance, either by security cameras (London, after all, is the most surveilled city on Earth outside China), by your neighbours, or by your own hyper-vigilance. However, it was also a more practical choice.

“It was born out of a certain inherited shyness,” Molko admits. “We found ourselves after four or five years not really having done a photoshoot, looking around, and understanding that nobody puts a picture of themselves out into the world without manipulating it. We all hide, we all project an image of ourselves that isn’t really our true selves. And so the idea came to take this aesthetic and push it to the extreme, [to become] a very clear comment on aesthetics today.”

Brian's concern about the enormous impact of these technologies led me to yet another term.

“You see, I haven’t seen it from that angle, that’s interesting. This track is kind of claustrophobic because, you know, it’s hard to avoid unkind eyes nowadays. It’s kind of crapped off on us. The character of 'Surrounded by Spies' feels that pressure of modern age, what it can do to you, how it can slowly turn your world very dark. And it can start to feel at times that there’s no escape. There’s some kind of darkness in this song. We wanted music to be very expressive, evil… We’re trying to find the hope, trying to find the cracklings of light in our songs but I think that 'Surrounded by Spies' is probably one of the darker moments. When it comes to Placebo lyrics, generally, on all the albums there were elements of personal, emotional honesty. I think that we’ve realized that it’s what makes the song universal - if you make it personal, sing of what you’ve experienced on this planet, whatever the feeling may be. We always discovered the darkest sides of human psyche and human’s emotions which are not easy to talk about, to acknowledge that we have sometimes. So I think this track is continuing in that way.“

“I think life would be too safe without taking risks. We’ve got very eclectic taste fan base, they don’t like one type of music. 'Surrounded by Spies' is very different to our first song, 'Beautiful James'. But it’s still us. It was good to do things slightly different, not to make two same songs, to let the fans taste yourself what’s to come. But as I said, it’s all still Placebo.“

But in the end let's go back to the very specific lyrics of the song which I purposely inserted without repetition to make it obvious how confused the text sounds:

In my opinion, with this song and the seemingly unrelated verses of the lyrics, Brian is expressing his concern about our being overwhelmed by all the different virtual media we have let into our lives.

When you read the verses, they don't seem to put together any story. It's as if headlines and bits of news from various sites across the internet are running in front of our eyes.

Can you see that now? It's another one of the masterpieces of the last Placebo album.

To create this song, Brian used a special method - the ⭐"cut-up technique"⭐, which was used by the writer and representative of the ๐๐ž๐š๐ญ ๐Œ๐จ๐ฏ๐ž๐ฆ๐ž๐ง๐ญ, ๐–๐ข๐ฅ๐ฅ๐ข๐š๐ฆ ๐๐ฎ๐ซ๐ซ๐จ๐ฎ๐ ๐ก๐ฌ, and which the unforgettable icon David Bowie fell in love with, and even made his own computer program for this method of creation.

It works by simply taking the finished text and cutting it into individual parts. Then you play with how you put random parts of the text back to create something completely different and new. For creators who don't want to be limited by anything, it's a fantastic and very liberating way to create.
