Do you notice how we gradually move from the earliest Placebo albums to the next ones? I may have missed some songs, but this is a pilgrimage of lullabies that please my soul, and of course not everyone necessarily agrees with my choice.
My main goal is to continue to take you through slow versions of Placebo's fast rock hits.

🔹When I first heard this song on the Meds album, it seemed like a clear straight return to the old Placebo. A great song with not too complicated text that again, as is usual with Brian's lyrics, can be interpreted in multiple ways.

🔹But true love only came with the slow version that I heard for the first time - in a live performance at the M6 Private concert in 2006.
Suddenly the lyrics is more speculated.. More contradictory...
Do you feel the same way?
That the rhythm and musical arrangement will change your perception of the text?

🔹Originally a very brisk song, it seems to indicate a clear solution - things are the way they are (narrator's alcoholism) and you, my love, make your choice, because you know I want you anyway...

🔹But once the rhythm of the song slows down, the narrator's greater indecision becomes apparent. He knows that his actions (alcohol) are destroying their beautiful relationship.

Two singles from Placebo’s fifth studio album 𝐌𝐞𝐝𝐬 were release on the same day, March 6th, 2006, 16 years ago: 𝐁𝐄𝐂𝐀𝐔𝐒𝐄 𝐈 𝐖𝐀𝐍𝐓 𝐘𝐎𝐔 was chosen for the UK while 𝐒𝐎𝐍𝐆 𝐓𝐎 𝐒𝐀𝐘 𝐆𝐎𝐎𝐃𝐁𝐘𝐄 for all the other countries.
As well as the whole album, the singles were produced by Dimitri Tikovoï.

🔷𝐁𝐄𝐂𝐀𝐔𝐒𝐄 𝐈 𝐖𝐀𝐍𝐓 𝐘𝐎𝐔 peaked at number 13 in the UK Singles Chart, staying in the charts for three weeks.
The highest positions 𝐒𝐎𝐍𝐆 𝐓𝐎 𝐒𝐀𝐘 𝐆𝐎𝐎𝐃𝐁𝐘𝐄 peaked at the charts were number 5 in Italy, number 6 in Greece and number 7 in Spain.

As for releasing two different lead singles, 𝑩𝒓𝒊𝒂𝒏 said:
📢“Placebo has always been a rock band. We’re not marketing champions. As a good band, we’re entitled to a good label. Everyone’s got their own part of the job to do. Their job is to decide which single will fit in with the audience it’s for. It’s their bitch of a job to choose which track will be released on this or that market. If doing their job well is to release a different single when only a few kilometers separate the countries, it’s because they have their reasons. And if they change their mind, it’s because they’ve changed their minds in between times.”

🔷On both 𝑪𝑶𝑽𝑬𝑹 𝑨𝑹𝑻𝑾𝑶𝑹𝑲𝑺 we can see blurred photographs of Steve Hewitt and Brian Molko by 𝑵𝒂𝒅𝒂𝒗 𝑲𝒂𝒏𝒅𝒆𝒓.


🔷𝐁𝐄𝐂𝐀𝐔𝐒𝐄 𝐈 𝐖𝐀𝐍𝐓 𝐘𝐎𝐔 features quite simple yet honest and direct 𝑳𝒀𝑹𝑰𝑪𝑺. “I’d rather not say anything about it, just listen to the lyrics, everything is explained in it!” 𝑩𝒓𝒊𝒂𝒏 said to 𝑅𝑜𝑐𝑘 𝑀𝑎𝑔 (𝐴𝑝𝑟𝑖𝑙 2006).
As for the sound, he admitted, with a bit of an irony, that he “wanted to outdo the Foo Fighters and write a great American rock song." (𝑋𝐹𝑀, 𝑀𝑎𝑟𝑐ℎ 2006)
𝐒𝐎𝐍𝐆 𝐓𝐎 𝐒𝐀𝐘 𝐆𝐎𝐎𝐃𝐁𝐘𝐄 turned out to be a deep pitiless confession…
📢𝐁𝐫𝐢𝐚𝐧: “It's a letter to myself, about myself. I was doing so bad then... I was in a vicious circle, I only felt sadness and anger and frustration and permanent insatisfaction. I was just never happy, never. And if there doesn't come an end to that, or if you don't even want to realise there's something seriously wrong... I had to do something to change my lifestyle, and that's why I went to India. That's where I wrote that song, it's the starting point for the record, the oldest song that's on it. Can you imagine anything worse than your best friend shouting "You are one of God's mistakes, you crying, tragic waste of skin" at you? Well, I needed to tell myself that.”

🔷𝑶𝑭𝑭𝑰𝑪𝑰𝑨𝑳 𝑽𝑰𝑫𝑬𝑶𝑺 for both songs are directed by 𝑷𝒉𝒊𝒍𝒊𝒑𝒑𝒆 𝑨𝒏𝒅𝒓𝒆́, a well-known film director who currently lives and works between Paris, London, and Los Angeles.
𝐁𝐄𝐂𝐀𝐔𝐒𝐄 𝐈 𝐖𝐀𝐍𝐓 𝐘𝐎𝐔 video is based on the band’s live performance. The shooting took place at the club KOKO in Camden Town, London, on January, 24th, 2006, and a lot of real (and lucky!) Placebo fans were involved in this work.

🔷𝐁𝐄𝐂𝐀𝐔𝐒𝐄 𝐈 𝐖𝐀𝐍𝐓 𝐘𝐎𝐔 was played live 190 times, starting with the day of making the video at KOKO and then was mostly played during the Meds tour plus early shows of the Battle For The Sun tour. The song has also got its honourable place in the Angkor Wat concert setlist in 2008. The latest performance to date took place at the famous MTV Unplugged concert in London on August 19th, 2015.
Live history of 𝐒𝐎𝐍𝐆 𝐓𝐎 𝐒𝐀𝐘 𝐆𝐎𝐎𝐃𝐁𝐘𝐄 looks way more exciting. With 562 performances, it takes the fourth place among the most often played Placebo songs.
For the first time, it was also played at the KOKO, London, during a short set for devoted Placebo fans after Because I Want You video shooting. It wasn’t missed during any of the next tours and was brought on stage at the latest to date Placebo show at Sion sous les étoiles on July 13, 2018.

Dear soulmates,
Today, I’m going to start telling you about two great Placebo videos directed by 𝑷𝒉𝒊𝒍𝒊𝒑𝒑𝒆 𝑨𝒏𝒅𝒓𝒆́: Because I Want You, today, and Song To Say Goodbye, in my next post.

The songs are both singles from Placebo’s fifth studio album 𝐌𝐞𝐝𝐬, Because I Want You was released as the first single in the UK and Song To Say Goodbye in other countries.
In 2006, Placebo's management asked 𝑷𝒉𝒊𝒍𝒊𝒑𝒑𝒆 𝑨𝒏𝒅𝒓𝒆́ to write the scripts for both videos connected by a common idea. He wrote two scripts for Because I Want You and three for Song To Say Goodbye.

Now, I’d like to tell you a little bit about the director 𝑷𝒉𝒊𝒍𝒊𝒑𝒑𝒆 𝑨𝒏𝒅𝒓𝒆́ using an excerpt of the 𝐅𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐡 𝐁𝐎𝐎𝐊 "𝐏𝐥𝐚𝐜𝐞𝐛𝐨. 𝐑𝐨𝐜𝐤 𝐬𝐮𝐫 𝐨𝐫𝐝𝐨𝐧𝐧𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞" ("𝐏𝐥𝐚𝐜𝐞𝐛𝐨. 𝐑𝐨𝐜𝐤 𝐨𝐧 𝐩𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐜𝐫𝐢𝐩𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧") 𝐛𝐲 𝐓𝐡𝐢𝐞𝐫𝐫𝐲 𝐃𝐞𝐬𝐚𝐮𝐥𝐞𝐬 (𝟐𝟎𝟎𝟗).

“Passionate about music, mostly contemporary, he dreamed of becoming a conductor. After graduating from the High School of Audiovisual Art where he studied cinematography and particularly, music for films, Philippe André changed his way for becoming a director. He vowed to watch two films a day for three years. Leaving school and having several documentaries done, including 'Brackets', based on texts by Samuel Beckett and William Burroughs, the young filmmaker started working at The Centre Pompidou where he collaborated with artists to create videos for their exhibitions. Later, he created logos and captions for the Planète Câble channel, then designed the visual stuff for the Paris Première TV channel.
He shot his first music video for Zazie for the song 'Larsen' followed by videos for Ann'So, Ute Lemper, Shakedown, Reminiscent Drive, Alain Chamfort and Emilie Simon. Then - thanks to the 'Under The Bridge' video for All Saints that won the Mobo Awards in 1998 - Philippe André embarked on a ‘British' career. The talented director was approached by such artists as Youssou N'Dour, Texas, Hooverphonic, Faithless, Roger Sanchez, Morcheeba.
Since then, the young man has worked mainly between London and Los Angeles. His first short film, The Rope, was selected for the short lists of many festivals such as the Los Angeles International Film Festival, The Big Apple New York Film Festival, and the San Francisco Independent Film Festival. The Rope won first prize at the Seattle International Film Festival.
Today, Philippe Andre lives between Paris, London, and Los Angeles.”

By the way, the cover of 𝐏𝐡𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐩𝐩𝐞 𝐀𝐧𝐝𝐫𝐞́’𝐬 𝐰𝐞𝐛𝐬𝐢𝐭𝐞 represents the scene of the Song to Say Goodbye video. I think, this only fact says how much he’s proud of this incredible work he did for Placebo.

Back to the 𝐁𝐄𝐂𝐀𝐔𝐒𝐄 𝐈 𝐖𝐀𝐍𝐓 𝐘𝐎𝐔 video, the shooting took place at the club 𝑲𝑶𝑲𝑶 in Camden Town, London, on January, 24th, 2006, and a lot of real (and lucky!) Placebo fans were involved in this work. The song was played 𝐟𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐭𝐢𝐦𝐞𝐬 to record enough material for editing the final version of the video. After that was done, the band played a short set that included 𝑴𝒆𝒅𝒔, 𝑫𝒓𝒂𝒈, 𝑻𝒉𝒆 𝑩𝒊𝒕𝒕𝒆𝒓 𝑬𝒏𝒅, 𝑵𝒂𝒏𝒄𝒚 𝑩𝒐𝒚 and 𝑺𝒐𝒏𝒈 𝑻𝒐 𝑺𝒂𝒚 𝑮𝒐𝒐𝒅𝒃𝒚𝒆.
We all love “behind the scenes” shootings, don’t we, soulmates? As for Because I Want You, we can also enjoy one!
From it, we can get where Brian’s phrase "𝑵𝒐𝒘 𝒆𝒗𝒆𝒓𝒚𝒃𝒐𝒅𝒚 𝒉𝒂𝒔 𝒕𝒐 𝒈𝒐 𝒉𝒐𝒎𝒆 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝒕𝒂𝒌𝒆 𝒂 𝒉𝒐𝒕 𝒃𝒂𝒕𝒉!" at the end of the video comes from. On the shooting day, some of the fans spent about ten hours nearby and at the club to be a part of the video! Brian was surely honest saying that he “𝒂𝒅𝒎𝒊𝒓𝒆𝒅 𝒕𝒉𝒆𝒊𝒓 𝒅𝒆𝒅𝒊𝒄𝒂𝒕𝒊𝒐𝒏”

We’ve also got another amazing “behind the scenes” piece - a homage video to Placebo fans created by Stefan’s (now) husband 𝑫𝒂𝒗𝒊𝒅 𝑨𝒎𝒆𝒏 called “𝐁𝐞𝐜𝐚𝐮𝐬𝐞 𝐰𝐞 𝐰𝐚𝐧𝐭 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐭𝐨𝐨”. It perfectly shows all the variability of Placebo’s crowd and is a beautiful way to say “Thank you” to many many fans in particular. The video leaves no doubts that it was totally unforgettable experience!

Today we have two ♦️𝗔𝗡𝗡𝗜𝗩𝗘𝗥𝗦𝗔𝗥𝗜𝗘𝗦♦️ to celebrate, as there were two different lead singles for “Meds” released on March 6th 2006. In the UK the first single from the album was “𝘽𝙚𝙘𝙖𝙪𝙨𝙚 𝙄 𝙬𝙖𝙣𝙩 𝙮𝙤𝙪”, in territories outside UK it was “𝙎𝙤𝙣𝙜 𝙩𝙤 𝙨𝙖𝙮 𝙜𝙤𝙤𝙙𝙗𝙮𝙚”. Both singles were produced by Dimitri Tikovoi who was also the producer of the album.

“Because I want you” reached number 13 in the UK Singles Chart and was the first Placebo record to be given a download release with a track unavailable on the various physical releases.

The live histories of both songs are very unalike. “Because I want you” was played during the “Meds” tour, at the famous concert at Angor Wat temple complex in Cambodia and the early legs of the “Battle for the sun” tour. Altogether it was performed live 189 times.
“Song to say goodbye” on the other hand made it on the setlist of all tours and was staged 562 times up to now. The only year it wasn't played live was 2008 but there was only one gig at all in 2008, namely the one at Angkor Wat that I mentioned above.

I went there for a lot of reasons, one of them being to try and change my lifestyle. I wanted to make me understand that I should not become a rock'n'roll cliché and that the world doesn't need another dead rock star. I've written it as a letter to myself."
