"I wrote it during my stay in India, like 'Song to say goodbye'. 'Meds' is about loosing yourself, not recognizing yourself. You feel lost, desperate, and you don't know what you think anymore, what you really feel. It's a very disturbing feeling, for me and for everyone, and I wanted to express it. I'm glad it's the opening song of the album, it's the 1st time a Placebo record opens with an acoustic chord."

"An addiction is a form of escape: you run away from yourself. It's a way of not facing life, to make things worse. Of course, you can have more or less control over it. It depends on whether the problem is due to your environment or whether it comes from your chromosomes. Sometimes it's hard to face things. To look at yourself with detachment. Living empirically, experimenting, is always easier than "following a path", but at the end of the day, you can't run away forever. At some point, you have to deal with all aspects of your life. Even the most painful ones."

I have a very deep personal connection to this song and will be very open in this post... because I know I'm not the only one whose life has been changed by Placebo music.

Maybe you know it too. A song you've known for years suddenly turns into a demon. It's in your ears all the time, day and night...

You can't get rid of the notes, the words. They come up in many everyday situations. And you don't want to hear it anymore because because it hurts...
It happened when MEDS was already 10 years old. I don't want to share very painful details, but I was going through a period that I wouldn't wish anyone in the world to experience.

The mental pain from the situation that totally wounded me was reflected psychosomatically in my physical body... and I cried out for help with every cell of my being and I've only encountered a lack of understanding from those closest to me.

I still remember the moment when this slow version first hit me right in the heart. I was listening to music before falling asleep and suddenly I was sitting on my bed crying.

The outline of the shadow lying beside me was insensitive to my emotions and I suddenly realized the depth of my problem. The fact that I try to maintain an image of my perfect happiness in front of the whole world and yet it was such a lie... It's an image of my addiction. Not on drugs, but on a dysfunctional marriage and family paradigm.

If you fight something in anger and hatred, it keeps coming back, even stronger, to finally bring you down.

But Meds for me will always be the song that on a subconscious level broke down the totally barricaded door to my wounded ego that wanted to stay hidden and feel sorry for itself until the very end.

Today, the slow version of Meds is a favorite lullaby for me. I love these Placebo acoustic songs and I will be happy if you enjoy this perfection with me tonight.

In these videos that I have selected for you, you can see how time went with this song.

Dear friends, many of us experience these winter days worse than the rest of the year.

Short sunshine, cold weather, snow and frost...
In connection with various hardships in life, this period causes a more frequent tendency to depression and gloomy thoughts in many people, the world seems sadder, darker.

When you add to all of this the troubles with love, with the end of a relationship, when we are shocked, angry, aggressive or just totally desperate, it can knock us down to the very bottom.

For today's post, I have chosen a song that is the perfect anthem for all broken hearts.

“๐๐‹๐ˆ๐๐ƒ” was written and recorded around 2002 when Placebo were working on covers with producer Dimitri Tikovoi.

Stefan: “We didn't want to make a B-side of it, so we kept the original recording for this album [“Meds”, released in 2006], just with vocals redone and more overdubs."

BLIND has been performed live 179 times, five of which were part of the setlist at intimate shows in 2022.

Lucky everyone who experienced this anthem about unrequited love live.

" Blind, included in Meds, is a somewhat alike song (I Know). The end of a relationship is kind like death. You have a life with someone and just suddendly, everything stops. The saddest part is that the world goes on and people go on minding their own business, without knowing the paint you feel. It's very interesting for an author to write about that."

Okay, so anyone who thought this song came from Brian's broken heart, might be wrong.

Fans can only speculate what all of Brian's experiences are in the lyrics of this painful ballad, as according to the quotes, the song Blind is mainly Stefan's child.
But a song is often created by a team... Someone suggests a musical line on the guitar or piano, someone comes up with a piece of verse...

"There’re no rules in fact. We try to stay very open. When it’s me that make the song, I can begin with a voice melody, when it’s Stefan, it more with a guitar, and when it’s Steve, it’s with drums. We can also begin with a piano line that Stef or me find accidentally, It’s often accidental."

I think that even the verses for Blind were created as a team, partly by Stefan, supplemented and completed by Brian. .. maybe...

๐Ÿ”น๐Ÿ’ฌ You have often been accused of being an intellectual band, sometimes you use somewhat complex phrasings. But for me, as you said, you're a band with a dark romanticism mood and I can not help but quote one of the most beautiful sentences that I have ever read in a song. Here's the quote. This is an excerpt from the title Blind.

⭐For me, this ballad has always evoked my personal memory of a relationship between lovers that was affected by drug addiction.

It was about my friends from my youth and their suffering that almost resulted in the death of that girl. Fortunately, she eventually came out of her coma in the hospital and entered a drug addiction treatment facility.

Nevertheless, it was the end of great love, because the boy's parents, fearing for their son's life, moved so far away that the two lovers could no longer see each other. Life sometimes brings experiences that are very cruel and take a painful place in our souls for the rest of our lives.

Hello soulmates,
after a break caused by several important anniversaries, today we return to our beloved Placebo Lullabies.

Tonight is going to be special. I have two gems that give the term Placebo lullaby its true meaning.
I chose these two songs from ๐Œ๐„๐ƒ๐’ album today also because they were both part of Placebo's ๐Ÿ”น๐Œ๐Ÿ” ๐๐ซ๐ข๐ฏ๐š๐ญ๐ž ๐‚๐จ๐ง๐œ๐ž๐ซ๐ญ ๐ข๐ง ๐Œ๐š๐ฅ๐š๐ค๐จ๐Ÿ๐Ÿ, ๐…๐ซ๐š๐ง๐œ๐ž, ๐จ๐ง ๐€๐ฎ๐ ๐ฎ๐ฌ๐ญ ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ, ๐Ÿ๐ŸŽ๐ŸŽ๐Ÿ”๐Ÿ”น and followed each other, so it was very easy to upload a video with both songs at once.

So today you can enjoy a unique concert with Brian's fragile expression of a shy puppy, which I personally really love and recommend to anyone who doesn't know Placebo yet.

And even now, I play it several times in a row when I'm feeling down.

So dark, so melancholic, so intense... almost hypnotic... Leonard Cohen's influence is absolutely clear in this song.
I'm always struck at first by Brian's low-pitched voice, full of total surrender to bitter reality.

Although I've never tried hard drugs, this song is a reliable way for me to feel even worse in moments of self-disgust and enjoy the feeling, as crazy as it sounds.
It's a way for me to cry about not being in control of my life, and I know that relief will come right after because I will feel hope in my heart.

Hope for another day.
That everything I failed again will pass with the sunrise and I can try again.
And that I don't have to repeat the same mistake again.
For me personally, it's a beautiful and honest ballad about hope.
In the morning I will hear the kettle with hot water whistling again and the day will begin full of new opportunities for change.

If the first ballad is about hope, the second one is about pure human pain and knowing other forms of love.

Do you notice how we gradually move from the earliest Placebo albums to the next ones? I may have missed some songs, but this is a pilgrimage of lullabies that please my soul, and of course not everyone necessarily agrees with my choice.
My main goal is to continue to take you through slow versions of Placebo's fast rock hits.

๐Ÿ”นWhen I first heard this song on the Meds album, it seemed like a clear straight return to the old Placebo. A great song with not too complicated text that again, as is usual with Brian's lyrics, can be interpreted in multiple ways.

๐Ÿ”นBut true love only came with the slow version that I heard for the first time - in a live performance at the M6 Private concert in 2006.
Suddenly the lyrics is more speculated.. More contradictory...
Do you feel the same way?
That the rhythm and musical arrangement will change your perception of the text?

๐Ÿ”นOriginally a very brisk song, it seems to indicate a clear solution - things are the way they are (narrator's alcoholism) and you, my love, make your choice, because you know I want you anyway...

๐Ÿ”นBut once the rhythm of the song slows down, the narrator's greater indecision becomes apparent. He knows that his actions (alcohol) are destroying their beautiful relationship.

Maybe the narrator is saying -

๐๐Œ: No, it's not by accident. I wanted to have female vocals on "Meds". And I thought of Alison immediately. Working with her is very pleasant, and very wild too. We met a few years ago in London, she really wowed me. Since then, I have been following her career, her rise with The Kills. When I asked her to come and participate in working on a song for the album, she agreed right away. In the studio, it's a bomb: Alison is Viagra in its purest form (smiles). She has a very sexy way of singing… She is irresistible.

◾๐๐Œ: I've known Jamie [‘Hotel’] for 16 years. When we wrote Meds, we thought that a female voice would be a good idea. It was then that Dimitri suggested Alison. Her voice is a real turn-on, like Viagra. She's from another world. When we were in the studio listening to her doing the vocals, all the guys got hard-ons. The Kills are an incredible band. We've seen Jamie in a lot of bands, and we even played with some of them¬ but The Kills!...¬ They're a musical triumph. One of the best modern rock bands.

Brian: Yes, their album is great, I was in college with Jamie, the singer guitarist of Scarfo. I played drums for him when he went to Edinburgh for a festival, he had created a one-man show inspired by Burkoff, which tells the story of a skinhead teenager. There are a few lines in this play that I robbed for the little poem that I say before "Lady Of The Flowers". He is one of my best friends, we have known each other for seven years.

At the time I was squatting in an apartment in London and we didn’t have any money or jobs. We got drunk one day and named each other off the top of our heads as a stupid romantic ode to the pop art scene, where they had all these fantastic names like Paul America. I named Alison with a sound, Vv. And she came up with Hotel because at that point my apartment was like a hotel for bands.

…/***/ Her eclectic career is both a testament to her malleable voice — although known for a glitter-bluesy melodic howl, her guest appearances can be ghostly or guttural — but also her restless, nomadic creative nature. “I’ve always, always loved working with people,” Mosshart says. “The power of more people is wonderful, and different ideas and different interpretations. It’s so fascinating to me to work outside of the Kills, work in the Dead Weather, but then also go do stuff with other bands and go sing on someone’s song. You go inside whatever their creative process is and explore. Everyone does something differently. You never walk away having not learned something. It’s great.”

When I was digging into all the places you’ve contributed guest vocals, I was blown away. I forgot that you were on Placebo’s record, Meds, and Primal Scream’s Riot City Blues that same year. How did you end up on both of those records? Were you doing the vocals in person in the studio? Or were you sending stuff back and forth?

Talent always comes out in the end. In 2000, while the world was wondering about the future of rock, Placebo, without pulling the wool over the eyes, sold a million copies of Black Market Music, their third album, which reached number one in almost all of Europe. Three years later, as the long-awaited new rock waves swept through London and New York, Placebo sold one and a half million copies of Sleeping With Ghosts and played to 18,000 people at Bercy. When the band of Brian Molko, Stefan Olsdal and Steve Hewitt played a sold-out show at Wembley Arena in 2004 to celebrate the release of their singles compilation Once More With Feeling, the truth became even more blinding: a decade after their debut, Placebo's persistence, blistering albums and scorching live shows had finally earned them a place on the podium of the major bands of their generation. "This rise to prominence has been a gradual process since the first album," confirms Stefan. Each of our albums has done a little better than the last and we weren't shocked. The same goes for the stage: there were five of us on the last tour, which allowed Brian and I to perform better.

What is truly remarkable about Placebo's rise to fame is that it has always been linked to a thirst for musical creativity, self-discovery and good storytelling. From the androgynous imagery of their early days, the band went on to analyze human nature (its perversions, the humiliations we inflict on others, the addictions and hope we often refuse to see), while exploring new musical territory: hip-hop and disco elements were incorporated into Black Market Music, while for Sleeping With Ghosts, Placebo dabbled in electronics. Courageously, the band challenged their audience to follow them, and saw them grow exponentially. With Meds, Placebo will take a new step.

Written in the summer of 2004 in the south of France, recorded in four months at London's RAK studios the following year with French producer Dimitri Tikovoรฏ, and mixed by the legendary Flood (U2, Depeche Mode), Meds shows Placebo as they are now, convinced that they have written the best songs of their career. "We ended up with too many songs for this record," Brian says . In general, we were always one short. There are at least five or six singles on Meds."

Placebo have encouraged Tikovoi to tone down their enthusiasm for electronics, a direction the band thought they were going to exploit after writing Twenty Years for the singles compilation, in favour of the guitar/bass/drums formula that doesn't cheat and emphasizes the intrinsic quality of the songs. "Dimitri's idea was that we should approach this record as if it were the first," Brian explains, "to get out of our comfort zone, to put Placebo back in danger. RAK is a studio where time has stood still, it hasn't changed much since the 70s and 80s. We had to go back to the elemental side of Placebo: for example, instead of expensive vintage keyboards, we used a simple piano. We had a reputation for being a bit complicated and we liked the freedom to go back to the basics. We preferred to put a lot of emphasis on writing rather than showing how skilled we were in the studio. We favoured simplicity over elaboration."

The result is not only a detonating cocktail: Meds is certainly the most human Placebo record to date. Brian Molko no longer feels the need to define himself using his array of S&M gadgets. He has become an adult, a storyteller who can talk about life without a coded language. In Meds he tells stories of fragile souls who panic because they forgot to take their medication. (Meds with VV from the Kills), of shame seen in the bathroom mirror at dawn, of re-declining after taking certain substances (Cold Light Of Morning) and of "friends who make the worst life choices" (Song To Say Goodbye). There is also a beautiful ballad (Follow The Cops back Home) and mysterious, haunting songs like Space Monkey, which Placebo listen to again as if it were a different band. Among other encounters, Meds is also marked by the presence of Michael Stipe, who illuminates Broken Promise with his presence: "We've known Michael since Velvet Goldmine and we met him in a hotel in Paris," Brian says. It's a song about adultery and we felt it would have more substance if it was performed by two men. I was thinking of a duet with a girl but we thought Michael would do very well. With VV, we have the best of the new and old generation on the record."

At first glance, you might have thought that Placebo had covered all the topics on Meds (love, confusion, revenge and addiction), but this is not the case, as Brian explains: "In a rock band, you don't grow up as fast. There's a lot of confusion on this record because nothing is ever simple in the Placebo world ! The people the songs are about are in constant conflict with themselves and struggle to find their place..."

Meds holds the promise of new adventurous excursions that this band, which considers the unknown as its home, intends to lead. Its success deserves to be commensurate with its non-conformism. We should not forget that we are talking about a band that played in Chile last year, to fulfill an old commitment, and found that they were excessively popular in South America... without even knowing it.

By going back to their roots, by becoming themselves again, Placebo continues to grow up. Like all the bands that have marked the history of rock, they know that salvation belongs to those who dare and do not hesitate to put their destiny on the line.

With Meds, Placebo does more than just play with fire: it makes a mockery of the sun and shows that it has managed to avoid burning their wings.

๐Ÿ’Š The composition of this medicine is very well dosed and here is what the band says about the choice of 'medicinal molecules' to make the treatment all the more effective.

๐Ÿ“œ We always produced our previous albums with other people while doing our B-sides or covers with Dimitri. And every time the B-side sounded much better than the rest! So at some point we thought: "Ok, this is ridiculous, now we have to work directly with him". And then he lives in London... We had a lot of discussions about this, reminding him that when he was in France he was producing Guesch Patti records and thus giving a really bad image of French music. Before the recording, we kept pounding on him that once he moved to London, he was going to do the same thing with English music...

๐Ÿ“œ We didn't choose him, he did ! The truth is that we had asked him several times before and he had always refused. Then one day he came and asked if he could mix our new record. It was a no-brainer, just look at his previous collaborations: Depeche Mode, Nick Cave, Smashing Pumpkins, PJ Harvey... All the albums he's produced are records that have inspired us in our songwriting.

๐Ÿ“œ I've been friends with Jamie for ages. We went to university and studied drama together. We've seen him play in lots of different bands. But it was once he started the Kills that we realized he had created a really important band and we were extremely proud. I've always found Alison overly intimidating. Just because of who she is, just because of her presence. And if it wasn't for Jamie, I would never have been able to talk to her. But it became possible, and as we were looking for a female voice, it seemed like a no-brainer. Her voice is like Viagra. When you see the Kills on stage, it's so sexual. She is the ultimate rock chick.

๐Ÿ“œ It was a song about adultery, and we were looking for a female singer. And then one day Steve said: 'For God's sake, why does it have to be a duet between a woman and a man ? That was the trigger, we realized that the song would be stronger with two singers. And I found it interesting to play the role of the cuckold in the song. Because it didn't happen often in reality...

๐Ÿ“œ I was quite nervous when they asked me to make their album. Firstly, it was one of the projects I'd ever worked on. Secondly, the band had four albums under their belt, all of them very good in different genres - the last one was a huge hit. And then it was the fifth album from a band that was becoming a bit settled.

I didn't want to make another Placebo album either. So I put a lot of pressure on myself before I started to make sure I never gave up on anything, to make sure I could push the band as far as possible. [...] We've worked together before, but in a different context, and I came in with the idea that it wasn't going to be a pleasant or enjoyable job. I had to get into it from the beginning, push them, without waiting until the middle of the album. On the third day in the studio, I got angry with Brian and he stormed out. It was an immediate shock. Brian didn't want to come back. So we both cleared the air and everything became possible. We pushed each other and constantly asked ourselves if we could do better. If we felt it was possible, we started to improve again and again.

๐Ÿ“œ I came to record this duet scared to death... I ended up in the studio on October 7th and I only stayed there for 3 hours. I rediscovered the song on the spot and tried to bring what I could to it. They gave me whisky, a glass of water and an ashtray. They turned off the lights and let me get on with it. It's funny to sing someone else's lyrics: I had no idea what Brian was getting at and I didn't ask him, I didn't want to get him pissed off with my questions and then it's kind of funny to sing something you don't understand. That's why I personally think that presenting the album Meds in such a format was a very appropriate stroke of genius ! Placebo is just like the treatment of the same name: harmless but the therapeutic effect is undeniably effective. No adverse effect noticed ๐Ÿ˜‰

Since then, the most incredible artists have played on the plaine of l'Asse, such as Placebo, Muse, Patti Smith, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Iron Maiden, Elton John, Pink, Sting, Joan Baez, Bjรถrk or The Cure. And if the weather has sometimes been a nuisance, it has also offered some anthology moments, like Neil Young performing in torrential rain, in 2013 as in 1993 ! Against all odds, Palรฉo continues to write its history of musical passion, year after year.

๐Ÿ”ธ For the 2006 edition where ๐‘ท๐’๐’‚๐’„๐’†๐’ƒ๐’ was present on July 22,, the festival director himself used a wine-lover's metaphor when he described this edition as a "great vintage".

๐Ÿ’ฌ Yes, completely. We've had a very positive path in our career. We're getting to headline more and more festivals. Our music always touches people, which we really appreciate. We started out touring England in a crappy little bus. It's great to be here ten years later, having recorded better and better albums, being proud of what we've done and still having something to say. It's something we don't take lightly.

๐Ÿ’ฌ The album was recorded much more live than the previous ones. So it's much easier to play on stage. The previous album, Sleeping With Ghosts, was done on computers. We spent more time in front of screens than actually playing. This can lead to a tendency to overthink what you're doing. Meds is a kind of reaction to that. Our producer, Dimitri Tikovoi, has a lot to do with it. He encouraged us to play instinctively. We felt that the songs were strong enough to stand up without technological tricks. It's a return to the basic Placebo instrumentals that we had on the first few albums. Going into the studio with songs not quite finished, you don't necessarily know what their identity will be at the end of the process. They didn't need to be overproduced in the end. The album was recorded fairly quickly, in four months.

๐Ÿ’ฌ Working on this record, with Dimitri as well, we felt like a tight team. We had more fun than ever. If there were any disagreements, we discussed them without anyone feeling attacked. The working atmosphere was much better than on the previous albums.

๐Ÿ’ฌ I think the dark side comes from the fact that it's very positive for us to have music as an outlet. A lot of people have problems, some go to a shrink, others drown in alcohol or drugs. Music has allowed us to be able to manage our lives. We can analyze, express our dark sides. We did make a happier song, I Do, which is on the singles compilation. It's not something that puts us off... Life is full of so many different emotions... We just want to write music that we like and be honest with ourselves. If we have an emotional connection with our music, people will feel it. If we fake it, they will feel it too.

๐Ÿ’ฌ We don't think about it too much. We've always done things our own way, without anyone interfering with our artistic vision. It seems to work and that's good. I don't know how long it will last... The music is so personal... In the studio we really withdraw from the world. We don't listen to music, we don't think about pleasing anyone but ourselves. We are very critical and we want to do better with every album. The day we have nothing more to say, we will stop... We are ambitious, we want to be the biggest rock band in the world and we work very hard for that...

๐Ÿ’ฌ Brian and I always needed to show off, that's for sure (laughs). We weren't 20 when we started writing. We imagined ourselves as rockstars, with a lot of naivety... But when you reach a certain level, you realize that you can go even higher. You're never satisfied. We haven't written our best song yet... There are always desires that push us to continue. That's why we're still here...

⭐️BRIAN MOLKO INTERVIEW 2009: TREASURE CHEST⭐️

The INTERVIEW I’m going to share with you today is the one I found checking my collection of the old magazine scans. Sadly, I don’t own any paper Placebo magazines, and I’m quite sad about it - hopefully, I can get at least some new ones. However, the old magazines, from the times when not everything turned digital yet, feel especially precious to me. What about you, soulmates, do you collect or have ever collected cut-offs with Placebo interviews and articles? I’d like to know!

The interview entitled Treasure Chest was published in Kerrang! in July 2009. While promoting Placebo’s sixth studio album Battle For The Sun, Brian commented on their older records. It’s good to remember his thoughts on them when the long-awaited Never Let Me Go is finally here.

AN INTIMATE PORTRAIT OF A LIFE IN ROCK

THE SUBJECT…
When they emerged, all eye shadow, fluttering lashes and gender-bending, Placebo immediately found themselves the irritant in Britpop’s culture of beer, posturing and machismo. It was something for which they – and in particular, androgynous frontman Brian Molko – were loved and loathed in equal measure. His sleazy glam charm and the fact that no-one could quite put their finger on his sexuality, identity or even, for that matter, where the band came from – Molko was born in Brussels and bassist Stefan Olsdal is Swedish – created both intrigue and revolt, much to the band’s delight. Their first two albums blended garish rock with glitter-ball punk before a foray into dance music with their third and, in parts, their fourth. Recently, their songwriting has become marked by maturity on the dark Meds and current album Battle For The Sun. It’s perhaps no wonder that they’ve calmly racked up well over 10 million albums sales.

๐Ÿ’ฟTHE KILLER DEBUT
Placebo “Placebo” (Virgin, 1996)

Brian: “We wrote most of the album in a council flat in Deptford. The way we sounded and looked was a reaction against the place. But also a lot of our cross-dressing and transvesticism was a political statement against the music scene at the time which was very laddish and macho. We wanted to stand up and be counted. There’s no better way to do that than by putting a bunch of slap on, wearing a skirt and fucking with people’s heads. People hated us for it and I adored that. Not getting a reaction was anathema to me at the time. When I look back at the album I see naivety, missed opportunities and mistakes. But you can get your knickers in a twist about it or you can just accept they’re part of you. I view Nancy Boy in a similar way that I imagine Radiohead look at Creep. I just wish the song that propelled us into the limelight had been a little bit better written. It’s the lyrics that make me cringe the most. They’re me trying to find my feet. You have to listen to the album tracks to find where I really was.”

DID YOU KNOW: The director of the video that accompanied single 36 Degrees, Chris Cunningham, claims to have made Molko cry during the shoot by forcing the singer to stand in freezing cold water on hours on end while filming.

๐Ÿ’ฟTHE BREAKTHROUGH
Placebo “Without You I’m Nothing” (Virgin, 1998)

Brian: “At that point we felt that the power trio format we’d explored on the first album was too limiting for us. We wanted to make a record that was more complex in terms of arrangements and instrumentation. In a way, the first album was the blueprint and this was the sound of Placebo beginning to blossom. It was a record born out of great difficulty, though. We had a very fractious relationship with our producer [Steve Osborne, Thrice, Elbow, Suede] so there was a lot of frustration and depression there. Having said that, we’re a band that does need a certain amount of friction on which to thrive.”

DID YOU KNOW: Brian Molko’s most hated song in the Placebo back catalogue is Without You I’m Nothing’s opener Pure Morning. “We will never, ever play that song again,” he admits.

๐Ÿ’ฟTHE NEW DIRECTION
Placebo “Black Market Music” (Virgin, 2000)

Brian: “We had a real swagger and bravado when we went into the studio for this one. We had just come off a really successful tour and felt we’d really exploded. We felt like cowboys of rock! We were also heavily medicated and beginning to get quite deep into drugs. That’s probably why it took nine months to make an album. The drugs also contributed to a certain amount of arrogance. At least that’s what I remember from the time. I think we had a desire to write about the world we saw around us. We thought it was cool that, though other people were a little afraid to get deep down and dirty, we could take it on ourselves to write about those things. I think that album was the start of us trying to mix genres. We had so much hatred for rap-rock, bands like Limp Bizkit and all they represented – misogyny, homophobia, and commercialism – that we wanted to do our own version of it.”

DID YOU KNOW: Placebo and Fred Durst had a row in New York that led to the Limp Bizkit singer being ejected from the venue. “He was MCing an evening we were playing and said some pretty horrible things about us onstage,” remembers Molko. “He got chased out of the building by our manager. He’s a bit of a pussy really. My manager’s a woman. He got chased out of the building by a girl.”

๐Ÿ’ฟTHE DRUGS ALBUM
Placebo “Meds” (Virgin, 2006)

Brian: “This was the beginning of the band falling apart [drummer Steve Hewitt left after its release] and the way we dealt with that was by anaesthetising ourselves to the max. When Stef and I hear tracks from the album we look at each other and go, ‘Erm… who played what on this song?’ There are moments on there, like [In The} Cold Light Of Morning, that are painful to listen to now. I don’t know that we’ve ever been that down before. I think it’s a very powerful record, emotionally, and despite the circumstamces under which it was made, it’s quite perfectly executed. It’s just very dark and doesn’t offer very much hope.”

DID YOU KNOW: Molko’s therapist loves Meds as a means with which to analyse the singer. “It’s a complete open window into my fucking head,” says Molko. “I should have sent him a copy earlier and saved on some bills!”
