Hi soulmates,
it's another Wednesday with no important Placebo anniversary, so we meet again for our series of lullabies.

With today's beautiful ballad, we end the era of the Battle For The Sun album, which was not too inclined to slow songs compared to the previous Meds album.

Here we see that this also confirms the departure from the dark Med's ballads towards the light, which does not eliminate the problems of human coexistence, but helps to see them more clearly and positively. 𝐁𝐮𝐭 𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐧 𝐨𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐚𝐥𝐛𝐮𝐦 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐞 𝐰𝐚𝐬 𝐚𝐧 𝐞𝐱𝐜𝐞𝐩𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧.

It's the tenth track on the BFTS album, right after Julien, whose energetic sound makes us dance... and then comes this bitter-ironic-melancholic and very emotional ballad.

Okay, it could just be another sad song symbolizing the end of a relationship between two people.
But this lullaby describes exactly the state where you convince your mind that this stage of life is over, while your heart is full of living painful wounds, bleeding and crying.
And Brian really knows how to get me into these emotions.

Not only with his lyrics, but especially with his voice.

Could this be a song about Steve Hewitt's bitter departure from the band? It certainly can, and many of you think so.
Honestly, I don't care whose departure cut such deep wounds in Brian's heart that he wrote this song.

Anyway, Brian has been at pains to point out in concerts 𝒕𝒉𝒂𝒕 𝒕𝒉𝒊𝒔 𝒔𝒐𝒏𝒈 𝒊𝒔 𝒂𝒃𝒐𝒖𝒕 '𝑵𝑶𝑩𝑶𝑫𝒀'...

It's also possible that Brian is getting a little tired of people making so many parallels, searching for direct connections between each line of every song and his private life...
However, with Brian's sense of poisonous irony, we can also count on the fact that this was someone very important in his life...and maybe it's the rendition of more such relationship breakdowns, just suddenly, in some strange melancholic mood, this ballad was born in the composer's mind.

What made Brian make such a tender statement to all the men in the venue?
We probably won't know the exact reason.

But my thoughts lead me to the topic of men's mental health, which concerns both Brian and Stefan personally and Olga had the same idea in one of her old posts.
While preparing a post about Project Alpha, I learned that the percentage of male suicides in the UK is on the rise. The social paradigm is mainly to blame, it's the pressure that leads men to suppress their emotions because that's how the male role in society has historically been set up. And it is clear that this topic does not only concern men in the UK...
And since human consciousness has been undergoing a profound transformation in recent years, it is time to say:

🎤 Well, that's the challenging equilibrium you try and strike every time you make a new record: trying to push the boundaries and limits of your sound without repeating yourself. You have to try to do something new, exciting and fresh with the band's sound and play with the band's conceived identity, but at the same time not disregarding what makes you uniquely 'you'.

⭐ 𝑫𝒐𝒆𝒔 𝒕𝒉𝒂𝒕 𝒈𝒆𝒕 𝒕𝒓𝒊𝒄𝒌𝒊𝒆𝒓 𝒂𝒔 𝒚𝒐𝒖 𝒈𝒐 𝒂𝒍𝒐𝒏𝒈?
🎤 I think so! The greater the body of work, the more difficult it becomes to write a fresh song; it becomes a lot more challenging. As far as longevity is concerned, I think if you look at the careers of the likes of The Cure or Depeche Mode - I use those examples because they both released albums this year, 30 years into their career - well they've made music, since day one, purely on their own terms, unaffected, unconcerned by trends, movements and fashion in music. They followed their own path and stuck to their guns, and I think that's why they're still making records which are still worthwhile listening. We're 15 years in, and that's where I'd like to be in another 15. It's not like we have any other options; we're basically unemployable, you know, so this is it.

🎤 I started looking back on my career around the time of Meds [fifth studio album, released in 2006]. As a lyricist I thought I was using a great deal of gimmicks. For example, the whole chemistry/medicine cabinet routine that is Commercial for Levi or a song title that screams 'Look at Me!' that is Nancy Boy! I made a decision that I wanted to stop using gimmicks and address the bigger questions in more everyday language where possible, and try and simplify it, I suppose. Say more by saying less, that's kinda the trip I'm on right now.

⭐ 𝑰𝒔 𝒏𝒐𝒕 𝒂𝒕𝒕𝒆𝒎𝒑𝒕𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒕𝒐 𝒅𝒆𝒇𝒊𝒏𝒆 '𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒉𝒖𝒎𝒂𝒏 𝒄𝒐𝒏𝒅𝒊𝒕𝒊𝒐𝒏' 𝒂 𝒓𝒊𝒔𝒌𝒚 𝒆𝒏𝒕𝒆𝒓𝒑𝒓𝒊𝒔𝒆?
🎤 Everybody who writes wants to write stuff that's timeless and doesn't date, really. I think you have to be very careful if you want to do that. You have to tap into the spirit of the age but at the same time write something that transcends it. I don't think that using incredibly culturally specific language enables you to do that. So, I'm trying to transcend that and write something that can stand up to the music that I grew up listening to. Take Leonard Cohen, for example. There's a universality in his music and a simplicity which makes it appreciable and meaningful in any decade, any century really. I think that's what I'm trying to do, hopefully in some way making a difference.

🎤 It's good to have an intelligent person running one of the most powerful countries and someone who generally cares. I'm less sympathetic towards the economic problems that exist right now than some people might be, because I have never been able to understand the whole culture of living beyond your means. I mean, I've been unemployed for a long time, I've been homeless, I've slept in train stations and I didn't spend money that didn't belong to me. So I find it difficult to be incredibly sympathetic with the culture of avarice that has got us into this position.


The other thing that annoys me about this whole focus on our economic woes is that nobody is talking about the environment anymore, and if anything is going to get us in the ass, it's going to be that. The hole in the ozone layer is still there, 20 years after they discovered it, and it's getting bigger and bigger, yet this isn't news. I want to be involved in the world. I think it comes from being a parent; you want to try and contribute to make a place for your children to grow up in that's hopefully a little bit better than where you were. Unfortunately, it seems that we are heading straight towards some form of environmental armageddon, and perhaps we deserve to go the same way as the dinosaurs for our treatment of the planet.

Another thing that caught my attention in this interview is that 𝑩𝒓𝒊𝒂𝒏's last answer reminded me of what he mentioned about the environment in the Placebo interviews we read earlier this year. A pity that 13 years later things have not changed much, so it is worth remembering that we must take care and value our planet every day with habits that are kind to nature. 🌏

It was out in all of Europe, except for the United Kingdom and Norway, with The Never-Ending Why being released in these two countries a week prior, on September 14th, 2009, as a second single.

This song has an interesting history.
For the first time, Stefan was not involved in its creation and it was not written for Placebo at all.
The co-writers of this specific one were two friends of Brian, namely 𝐀𝐦𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐧 𝐬𝐢𝐧𝐠𝐞𝐫-𝐬𝐨𝐧𝐠𝐰𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐞𝐫 𝐉𝐨𝐫𝐝𝐚𝐧 𝐏𝐚𝐠𝐞 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐒𝐭𝐞𝐯𝐞 𝐋𝐮𝐝𝐰𝐢𝐧, 𝐚 𝐁𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐬𝐡 𝐩𝐮𝐧𝐤 𝐫𝐨𝐜𝐤𝐞𝐫.

Initially, it was not intended for Placebo, but I was so pleased with the result that I decided to include it."

𝐁𝐫𝐢𝐚𝐧: Because… because of this connection to Ashtray Heart etc., we wrote it to sell it to someone. And we wrote it in Nicaragua, so there is Spanish in it ‘Cenicero cenicero mi corazon’. I was the only smoker, and when I was on vacation in Nicaragua I was always asking in every restaurant, in every coffee for ‘cenicero, cenicero’. We had the demo for this song, we listened to it while driving across Nicaragua and that's how the song was written. And this is the first song which is on Placebo album that I didn't write with Stefan.

🔸This documentary consists of 16 chapters, which were released and uploaded on the band's official website between July and November 2009. However, after the final chapter of this video series, 𝑷𝒍𝒂𝒄𝒆𝒃𝒐 released two more chapters: "𝑻𝒉𝒆 𝑴𝒆𝒙𝒊𝒄𝒂𝒏 𝑬𝒑𝒊𝒍𝒐𝒈𝒖𝒆", which showed behind the scenes footage of their visit to 𝑴𝒆𝒙𝒊𝒄𝒐, and "𝑷𝒍𝒂𝒄𝒆𝒃𝒐 𝑴𝑻𝑽𝒊𝒄𝒕𝒐𝒓𝒚" which captured the moments before and after the band won the well-deserved 𝑴𝑻𝑽 𝑬𝒖𝒓𝒐𝒑𝒆 𝑴𝒖𝒔𝒊𝒄 𝑨𝒘𝒂𝒓𝒅 for '𝑩𝒆𝒔𝒕 𝑨𝒍𝒕𝒆𝒓𝒏𝒂𝒕𝒊𝒗𝒆 𝑨𝒄𝒕' . 🔸 𝑻𝒐 𝒑𝒓𝒐𝒎𝒐𝒕𝒆 𝑩𝒂𝒕𝒕𝒍𝒆 𝑭𝒐𝒓 𝑻𝒉𝒆 𝑺𝒖𝒏, 𝑩𝒓𝒊𝒂𝒏 gave an interview to 𝑷𝒂𝒖𝒍 𝑴𝒊𝒕𝒄𝒉𝒆𝒍𝒍 for the Scottish independent cultural magazine 𝑻𝒉𝒆 𝑺𝒌𝒊𝒏𝒏𝒚. From a rather classical beginning, the interview slowly slips into a more serious conversation, where Brian confesses the hard times when he was younger in London, leaving him with a lack of understanding of the world towards influential people filled with egocentricity, insensitivity and therefore indifference towards the most needy people. And you'll see with his last answer that since 2009, awareness concerning environment is changing, little by little, but it is changing 🙏

💬 Well, that's the challenging equilibrium you try and strike every time you make a new record: trying to push the boundaries and limits of your sound without repeating yourself. You have to try to do something new, exciting and fresh with the band's sound and play with the band's conceived identity, but at the same time not disregarding what makes you uniquely 'you'.

𝘿𝙤𝙚𝙨 𝙩𝙝𝙖𝙩 𝙜𝙚𝙩 𝙩𝙧𝙞𝙘𝙠𝙞𝙚𝙧 𝙖𝙨 𝙮𝙤𝙪 𝙜𝙤 𝙖𝙡𝙤𝙣𝙜 ?
💬 I think so ! The greater the body of work, the more difficult it becomes to write a fresh song; it becomes a lot more challenging. As far as longevity is concerned, I think if you look at the careers of the likes of The Cure or Depeche Mode - I use those examples because they both released albums this year, 30 years into their career - well they've made music, since day one, purely on their own terms, unaffected, unconcerned by trends, movements and fashion in music. They followed their own path and stuck to their guns, and I think that's why they're still making records which are still worthwhile listening. We're 15 years in, and that's where I'd like to be in another 15. It's not like we have any other options; we're basically unemployable, you know, so this is it.

💬 I started looking back on my career around the time of Meds [fifth studio album, released in 2006]. As a lyricist I thought I was using a great deal of gimmicks. For example, the whole chemistry/medicine cabinet routine that is Commercial for Levi or a song title that screams 'Look at Me !' that is Nancy Boy ! I made a decision that I wanted to stop using gimmicks and address the bigger questions in more everyday language where possible, and try and simplify it, I suppose. Say more by saying less, that's kinda the trip I'm on right now.

💬 Everybody who writes wants to write stuff that's timeless and doesn't date, really. I think you have to be very careful if you want to do that. You have to tap into the spirit of the age but at the same time write something that transcends it. I don't think that using incredibly culturally specific language enables you to do that. So, I'm trying to transcend that and write something that can stand up to the music that I grew up listening to. Take Leonard Cohen, for example. There's a universality in his music and a simplicity which makes it appreciable and meaningful in any decade, any century really. I think that's what I'm trying to do, hopefully in some way making a difference.

💬 It's good to have an intelligent person running one of the most powerful countries and someone who generally cares. I'm less sympathetic towards the economic problems that exist right now than some people might be, because I have never been able to understand the whole culture of living beyond your means. I mean, I've been unemployed for a long time, I've been homeless, I've slept in train stations and I didn't spend money that didn't belong to me. So I find it difficult to be incredibly sympathetic with the culture of avarice that has got us into this position.
The other thing that annoys me about this whole focus on our economic woes is that nobody is talking about the environment anymore, and if anything is going to get us in the ass, it's going to be that. The hole in the ozone layer is still there, 20 years after they discovered it, and it's getting bigger and bigger, yet this isn't news. I want to be involved in the world. I think it comes from being a parent; you want to try and contribute to make a place for your children to grow up in that's hopefully a little bit better than where you were. Unfortunately, it seems that we are heading straight towards some form of environmental armageddon, and perhaps we deserve to go the same way as the dinosaurs for our treatment of the planet.

🔸 Again, it was a sensible and thoughtful interview that Brian granted us, but it's all about the clever questions as well. I definitely don't miss the days when journalists focused on Brian's appearance or the band's drug use !

🔸 Brian has long mentioned the universal nature of his lyrics and the universality of his songs. The fact that the band has been around for almost 30 years, there is no denying that Placebo's longevity is due in part to these two characteristics, amongst the poetry, the imagery, the tortured and tormented music, and Brian's unique and unrivalled voice 💖

🔸 What I like most of all are those people who manage to overcome the resentment they might have accumulated during disastrous periods in their lives to transform it into altruism and avoid reproducing what they have suffered or experienced. Knowing how to learn life's lessons with philosophy. It is so admirable and encouraging.

Speaking to Placebo’s 🔹𝗕𝗥𝗜𝗔𝗡 𝗠𝗢𝗟𝗞𝗢🔹, frontman of the band that once carried the title of “Britain most outrageous music group” like a pennant, you’re expecting anything ”“ tantrums, arrogance, reticence, impatience ”“ anything but the practiced spiel he’s now dishing as he talks about their sixth album Battle For the Sun. In hindsight, that shouldn’t have been surprising at all. If there’s one thing Placebo have mastered in all their fifteen years, it’s the art of always staying a step ahead of the public’s expectations. It’s also the reason why they’re one of Britain’s most consistently successful bands. The band that first gained notoriety for their alternative sexualities, debauched lifestyle and frontman Molko’s androgynous image are eager to shed the ghosts of their past and move beyond their image. .../***/


Their latest effort, 𝐁𝐚𝐭𝐭𝐥𝐞 𝐅𝐨𝐫 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐒𝐮𝐧, though, is the band’s sunshine album. When asked to describe the album, Molko heaves the tiniest of sighs and launches into a well-practised description:

That the band’s sunniest album should come at the most tempestuous time in their career, is the kind of irony Molko relishes. He doesn’t cloak the bitterness and pain that the exit of Steve Hewitt brought about, but he’s spoken about it so often now, it comes out without emotion or rancour.

With Hewitt’s departure, fans had begun to worry that the end of Placebo was near. But Molko dismisses the fears.
The 22-year-old much-tattooed Forrest was the drummer of punk rock band Evaline, who opened for Placebo during their Meds tour in the United States.

In many ways, Battle For the Sun marks the journey of Placebo from sinners to saints. It’s not only the music that’s changed; the band members’ lives have taken entirely different directions. Gender-bending, bisexuality-flaunting Molko today is the proud father of a four-year-old with his steady girlfriend Helena Berg.

But the band’s shift from their hedonistic beginnings to “responsible citizens” was officially sealed by their appearance on the MTV EXIT campaign to increase awareness about human trafficking. The third EXIT concert was held in Cambodia, outside the magnificent 12th century Angkor Wat temple complex, the recorded performance of which will be released as a bonus DVD with the Battle For the Sun box set. It’s when talking about the campaign that Molko’s voice really comes alive,

🔸Battle For The Sun, Placebo's sixth studio album, was released on June 8, 2009.
🔸It reached number 8 in the UK Albums Chart.
🔸The album is available as a download, limited edition CD and DVD, LP and a limited edition box set.
🔸All tracks were recorded at Metalworks Studios in Toronto, Canada, and produced by 𝐃𝐚𝐯𝐢𝐝 𝐁𝐨𝐭𝐭𝐫𝐢𝐥𝐥, except for “Kings of medicine”. This song was originally made for a “Don't drink and drive” campaign and produced by Dimitri Tikovoi, who worked with the band on their previous album “Meds”.
🔸Four singles were released from the record: "For what it's worth”, “The never-ending Why”, “Ashtray Heart” and “Bright Lights”.
🔸It is the first album recorded with drummer 𝐒𝐭𝐞𝐯𝐞 𝐅𝐨𝐫𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐭, who joined the band in 2008.
🔸On Battle for the Sun, the band utilize new instruments, such as trumpets and saxophones.

Previous album "Meds" took the band Placebo into the deepest and darkest universes. And so it was time to realize that life goes on and it doesn't have to be just about suffering. From the inner strength of survival came an album no longer affected by the devastation of drugs and alcohol.

🔸"This album has one of my favorite songs to play live, which is "Speak in Tongues." This is the only record that we recorded outside of the UK. There had been a recent personnel change in the band, and we'd gone from making an album that had been very claustrophobic, and we now wanted to make a record that was quite cinemascope and anthemic. It ended up being very much an album about drums and guitars. I guess it's very much the sound of a band trying to find a new identity. .../***/

Compared to the predecessor, definitely. That had been precipitated by a line-up change, a lifestyle change, and going from feeling at one point that my band was doomed to feeling like we had a future and I could start from scratch again. It's definitely our most American sounding record, I think.

We just wanted to work with David Bottril (Tool, Muse). He suggested we try it there. And we wanted to try and record a record outside of the UK. David knew his way around an excellent studio, and he certainly did in terms of sonics. We were looking for something that was tougher and heavier than its predecessor, so Tool's producer seemed like a good choice.

Our decision to use brass was inspired by our love of soul, reggae and Beatles’ records. We’ve used strings before; check out ‘Pierrot the Clown’ from [the album] ‘Meds’.

Each new album starts as a reaction to its predecessor, which is the biggest influence of all because it determines exactly what we do not want to do. With that in mind, and with a little distance for perspective’s sake, Stef and Idecided that ‘Meds’ was a very claustrophobic and monochrome album that offered hardly any hope to the listener. Thus it seemed logical to make a new album bursting with colour and optimism. Having said that, whether we did so or not remains up for debate.

It's amazing that a good friend of the band, director 𝐂𝐡𝐚𝐫𝐥𝐢𝐞 𝐓𝐚𝐫𝐠𝐞𝐭𝐭-𝐀𝐝𝐚𝐦𝐬, was present during the recording of the album. Thanks to him, a document was created that is a beautiful and sensitive confession about the whole process. This bonus DVD was a surprise for fans as part of the BFTS Deluxe edition.

📢Certainly! A new producer is not surprising, really, because on every album we work with different producers, so there’s no need to specifically explain it. But the new drummer… yeah! We needed to recapture the sense of brotherhood that no longer existed within the band and positivity that wasn't there anymore. It turned into a kind of "tube – work - sleep" scheme. As a teenager, I tried to run away from many things in my life, and when everything around you starts to resemble what you tried to avoid, you tell yourself that it's time to change something.


𝑾𝒉𝒆𝒏 𝒕𝒉𝒊𝒏𝒈𝒔 𝒅𝒊𝒅𝒏'𝒕 𝒘𝒐𝒓𝒌 𝒐𝒖𝒕 𝒊𝒏 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒃𝒂𝒏𝒅, 𝒅𝒊𝒅 𝒚𝒐𝒖 𝒕𝒉𝒊𝒏𝒌 𝒂𝒃𝒐𝒖𝒕 𝒔𝒕𝒂𝒓𝒕𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒂 𝒔𝒐𝒍𝒐 𝒄𝒂𝒓𝒆𝒆𝒓?
📢Life on endless tours is only interesting when you're in a band. So, a solo career didn’t attract me back then.


𝑻𝒆𝒍𝒍 𝒖𝒔 𝒂 𝒃𝒊𝒕 𝒂𝒃𝒐𝒖𝒕 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒏𝒆𝒘 𝒅𝒓𝒖𝒎𝒎𝒆𝒓, 𝑺𝒕𝒆𝒗𝒆 𝑭𝒐𝒓𝒓𝒆𝒔𝒕. 𝑾𝒉𝒂𝒕 𝒅𝒊𝒅 𝒉𝒆 𝒃𝒓𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒕𝒐 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒃𝒂𝒏𝒅?
📢Californian sun (laughs)! What's interesting about Steve is his positivity and his attitude. There’s something unique about him that attracted us. We needed someone who hadn't been corrupted by show business yet, and with whose help we could bring back the magic, the youthful enthusiasm that we had lost. It was thanks to him that we again felt the fire as it was at the very beginning of our career.

📢We wanted to make a record that wouldn't get outdated over time. That’s why we went for strings, not synths, because these are classical instruments, they’re timeless. The trick is that electronic music changes very quickly. And if you use a lot of synth sounds, your music will get old quickly. Actually, that's why we preferred wind and string instruments, so that the album remains relevant regardless of time.

📢I would really like to become a ‘knight’ in the Order of Arts and Letters, that would be the best compliment. I know that Kylie Minogue was given such an order, and that’s a bit sad to me because she’s not even a writer of her songs. Well, that’s probably because I'm not that handsome as Kylie.
