Speaking to Placebo’s 🔹𝗕𝗥𝗜𝗔𝗡 𝗠𝗢𝗟𝗞𝗢🔹, frontman of the band that once carried the title of “Britain most outrageous music group” like a pennant, you’re expecting anything ”“ tantrums, arrogance, reticence, impatience ”“ anything but the practiced spiel he’s now dishing as he talks about their sixth album Battle For the Sun. In hindsight, that shouldn’t have been surprising at all. If there’s one thing Placebo have mastered in all their fifteen years, it’s the art of always staying a step ahead of the public’s expectations. It’s also the reason why they’re one of Britain’s most consistently successful bands. The band that first gained notoriety for their alternative sexualities, debauched lifestyle and frontman Molko’s androgynous image are eager to shed the ghosts of their past and move beyond their image. .../***/


Their latest effort, 𝐁𝐚𝐭𝐭𝐥𝐞 𝐅𝐨𝐫 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐒𝐮𝐧, though, is the band’s sunshine album. When asked to describe the album, Molko heaves the tiniest of sighs and launches into a well-practised description:

That the band’s sunniest album should come at the most tempestuous time in their career, is the kind of irony Molko relishes. He doesn’t cloak the bitterness and pain that the exit of Steve Hewitt brought about, but he’s spoken about it so often now, it comes out without emotion or rancour.

With Hewitt’s departure, fans had begun to worry that the end of Placebo was near. But Molko dismisses the fears.
The 22-year-old much-tattooed Forrest was the drummer of punk rock band Evaline, who opened for Placebo during their Meds tour in the United States.

In many ways, Battle For the Sun marks the journey of Placebo from sinners to saints. It’s not only the music that’s changed; the band members’ lives have taken entirely different directions. Gender-bending, bisexuality-flaunting Molko today is the proud father of a four-year-old with his steady girlfriend Helena Berg.

But the band’s shift from their hedonistic beginnings to “responsible citizens” was officially sealed by their appearance on the MTV EXIT campaign to increase awareness about human trafficking. The third EXIT concert was held in Cambodia, outside the magnificent 12th century Angkor Wat temple complex, the recorded performance of which will be released as a bonus DVD with the Battle For the Sun box set. It’s when talking about the campaign that Molko’s voice really comes alive,

Dear friends, today I invite you to one of the most beautiful and exceptional festivals in Europe.
The EXIT Festival, which takes place in the Serbian city of Novi Sad, fascinated me with its amazing history - its origin.


📌 𝐅𝐄𝐒𝐓𝐈𝐕𝐀𝐋 𝐈𝐍𝐅𝐎:
"From its beginnings as a protest against the Milosevic regime, EXIT has grown into one of the biggest music festivals in Europe.
EXIT is more than that though – it is a festival that traditionally has a political message at heart and whilst this is not why the majority of about 200,000 people come together and celebrate four days on Novi Sad’s Petrovaradin fortress, the festival organisers still like to emphasise the importance of civil activism with the presence of many NGO’s and international organisations.
𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐄𝐗𝐈𝐓 𝐬𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐲 𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐞𝐝 𝐢𝐧 𝟐𝟎𝟎𝟎 𝐚𝐬 𝐚 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐭𝐡 𝐫𝐞𝐛𝐞𝐥𝐥𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐚𝐠𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐬𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐌𝐢𝐥𝐨𝐬𝐞𝐯𝐢𝐜 𝐫𝐞𝐠𝐢𝐦𝐞. That year, thousands of students from Novi Sad gathered on the university campus close to the river Danube to hear local bands and DJs perform and to listen to speakers voicing their opinions about the regime that had isolated them from the rest of Europe for the past decade. The event lasted 100 days and finished off with a party and a call for all the young people of Serbia to go and vote in the elections that were to be held the following day – the day which led to the downfall of the Milosevic regime.
The success gave the team behind the initial demonstrations the impetus to organise it as a festival in the true sense of the word and 2001 saw the first EXIT festival in the format we celebrate it today – in the grounds of the Petrovaradin Fortress with a stunning view over the Danube and Novi Sad’s skyline.
In 2001 the festival lasted nine days and people still recount the mind-blowing performance that Roni Size gave back then in front of thousands of people. One of the biggest signs of progress back then was that Croatian artists came to play at the festival. These days, Croatian bands such as Lollobrigida are some of the most popular acts for the locals at the festival and it would be hard to imagine the event without them. In 2003 the festival was shortened to the present four day format.
In 2004 MTV became involved in the festival and BBC’s Radio 1 covered EXIT in 2005 and the event has become much more commercial, raising the hackles of some of the festival goers from the early years. But a more commerical outlook has led to continuous improvement of the festival line-up and diversification of the musical genres represented.
This year’s festival (2010) has one of the best line-ups of any European festival and there’s enough for fans of any music genre to get exited about."📌

Fans of the festival could really enjoy this year - in addition to Placebo, there were for example a brilliant LCD Soundsystem (you may remember that this is one of Placebo's favorite friendly bands and certainly Brian enjoyed their concert) and also Finnish charismatic singer Mika, the band Faith No More, The Chemicals Brothers and many others …


And yet I must not forget to mention - 𝐌𝐓𝐕 𝐄𝐱𝐢𝐭 - does this name mean anything to you?
Yes, it's a charity founded under the banner of MTV, and it's the one that brought us awareness of human trafficking and sexual slavery in Cambodia. A wonderful concert at Angkor Wat was the work of this organization.


📌 𝐓𝐇𝐄 𝐒𝐎𝐂𝐈𝐀𝐋 𝐂𝐎𝐌𝐏𝐎𝐍𝐄𝐍𝐓
MTV has also been one of the main promoters of social activism with their presence at EXIT festival. When the music television station started to host its own stage at EXIT, it also teamed up with the festival organisers to promote work of the MTV Europe Foundation, raising awareness on human rights issues in Serbia and the whole region. The work of Non Governmental Organisations is an important component of the festival and there will be a raft of organisations at the event hoping to promote social awareness amongst festival goers.📌

"From promoter we heard many nice things about the festival. I can’t really say how the whole EXIT story started, but I do know it began from real reasons, that at the beginning there were no big sponsors and, all in all, that music is most important. And that is what makes this festival so special, many told us that before we came. Because of it all we’re proud to be here and I’m sure we will enjoy it in Novi Sad. And the location! It’s really fantastic. I love to play at such original places which is better and more interesting then a gig at some field. Fortresses are remembered because everything around you is unusual."

If there wasn’t Brian’s and Stefan’s “treatment” I don’t think I would survive these three years."

"Brian and Stefan always try to find some new sound, they already used electronic, experimented with guitar sound… And then there was a question: what now? Then Brian came up with the idea to use wind instruments, but it was complicated to match the sound because we didn’t want those to repress other instruments. But it was fun and we had great time while recording it. Because of it all record sounds powerful and different."

𝑩𝒓𝒊𝒂𝒏 𝑴𝒐𝒍𝒌𝒐: People think as you're a musician, you wake up in the morning, you're surrounded by groupies, you evict them of your bed and you make an injection in the eye and inspiration comes; you're on the roof watching the moon and poetry appears, nonsense. It's not the way it is, it is discipline like all the others, like a martial art, for instance. That's what interests me, this discipline. I think that people who say: << Oh.. I can't really work my art these days because I don't feel fine, I’m too scared >> I think it's weird. I'm in a constant creativity process. It doesn't necessarily means it's good, but even if it's sh*t, what's important is it's written. It's like a muscle you train as in gym. If you don't use it every day, you forget its existence, this muscle of creativity.

𝑩𝒓𝒊𝒂𝒏 𝑴𝒐𝒍𝒌𝒐: We've been in Cambodia in december 2008 to play a very special concert. We were in front of a 12th century Buddhist temple which is called Angkor Wat. We've been there because we're collaborating with a charity, MTV Exit. What we're trying to do together is essentially to stop human trafficking. There are at least 2.5 millions of people whenever, who are being trafficked; What attracted us to that charity in particular, MTV is efficient in the way it's talking directly to the most vulnerable people: teens, young adults, they are the most vulnerable to this kind of traffic. It's a true cause, we knew we could make the difference on the spot, that's why we take the effort to go to Cambodia to play this concert.

This concert in 𝑨𝒏𝒈𝒌𝒐𝒓 𝑾𝒂𝒕, held on December 7th, 2008, was pretty special for many reasons: to help raise awareness and increase prevention of human trafficking, to play in front of a wonderful sacred monument located in the Cambodian jungle, the very first rock concert in the history of this place and the first concert sharing the stage with 𝑺𝒕𝒆𝒗𝒆 𝑭𝒐𝒓𝒓𝒆𝒔𝒕 and 𝑭𝒊𝒐𝒏𝒂 𝑩𝒓𝒊𝒄𝒆.

𝑷𝒍𝒂𝒄𝒆𝒃𝒐 made a selection of songs that they considered appropriate for the occasion and made new arrangements that they rehearsed for three weeks before. In front of 1,200 people - mostly Cambodians who attended for free - that night also performed 𝑻𝒉𝒆 𝑪𝒍𝒊𝒄𝒌 𝑭𝒊𝒗𝒆, 𝑫𝒖𝒏𝒄𝒂𝒏 𝑺𝒉𝒆𝒊𝒌, 𝑲𝒂𝒕𝒆 𝑴𝒊𝒍𝒍𝒆𝒓-𝑯𝒂𝒊𝒅𝒌𝒆 and some of Cambodia's most important artists, such as the hip-hop band 𝑷𝒉𝒐𝒖 𝑲𝒍𝒂𝒊𝒏𝒈. Then 𝑷𝒍𝒂𝒄𝒆𝒃𝒐 took the stage and delighted the audience for 40 minutes with their music, playing an amazing semi-acoustic set.

I think if we can make them aware that this happens on a daily basis around the world and there are people around the world undergoing these forms of slavery, and if it deeply touches them then I hope they will be inspired to get more involved in trying to change the situation.

That's what we can do as a rock band: Use our voice and our music to spread a message and say that this situation – slavery – it unacceptable, and that we can all do something to fight it. We are not politicians, we are not heads of police. We can just try to change people's minds and inspire them to act.

Placebo for charity, part 1

A very simple name for my post today, dear Soulmates.
Placebo and their charitable projects is a beautiful, deep, human theme. There were quite a few that I discovered, so we have something to talk about.
Let's start with a project we all know.


💗 In 2008 there was a concert in 𝐀𝐧𝐠𝐤𝐨𝐫 𝐖𝐚𝐭 𝐢𝐧 𝐂𝐚𝐦𝐛𝐨𝐝𝐢𝐚.
The first live performance of a young drummer, "𝗦𝘂𝗻𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗲"🌞 Steve Forrest. With this concert, Placebo got involved in a project called 𝗠𝗧𝗩 𝗘𝘅𝗶𝘁.

I can still watch this performance. Placebo was the first rock band to perform in front of the sacred temple. Very sensitively compiled setlist, no vulgarities, Steve had his tattoos hidden under a white shirt, Brian and Stefan almost without make-up. The band made sure that ticket prices were low enough for ordinary Cambodians to afford their concert.

On YT I managed to find two videos from the beginning of this show in the Netherlands. They are filmed by two fans and because one ends in the middle and the other starts in the middle, I combined them into one video. Mr. Molko, a perfect-looking "small and gentle man", reads Gandhi's NAMASTE text with a slight nervousness and a trembling voice, and concludes a deal with young fans. A deal about what? We all already know that😀.
