Hi soulmates,
it's another Wednesday with no important Placebo anniversary, so we meet again for our series of lullabies.

With today's beautiful ballad, we end the era of the Battle For The Sun album, which was not too inclined to slow songs compared to the previous Meds album.

Here we see that this also confirms the departure from the dark Med's ballads towards the light, which does not eliminate the problems of human coexistence, but helps to see them more clearly and positively. 𝐁𝐮𝐭 𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐧 𝐨𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐚𝐥𝐛𝐮𝐦 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐞 𝐰𝐚𝐬 𝐚𝐧 𝐞𝐱𝐜𝐞𝐩𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧.

It's the tenth track on the BFTS album, right after Julien, whose energetic sound makes us dance... and then comes this bitter-ironic-melancholic and very emotional ballad.

Okay, it could just be another sad song symbolizing the end of a relationship between two people.
But this lullaby describes exactly the state where you convince your mind that this stage of life is over, while your heart is full of living painful wounds, bleeding and crying.
And Brian really knows how to get me into these emotions.

Not only with his lyrics, but especially with his voice.

Could this be a song about Steve Hewitt's bitter departure from the band? It certainly can, and many of you think so.
Honestly, I don't care whose departure cut such deep wounds in Brian's heart that he wrote this song.

Anyway, Brian has been at pains to point out in concerts 𝒕𝒉𝒂𝒕 𝒕𝒉𝒊𝒔 𝒔𝒐𝒏𝒈 𝒊𝒔 𝒂𝒃𝒐𝒖𝒕 '𝑵𝑶𝑩𝑶𝑫𝒀'...

It's also possible that Brian is getting a little tired of people making so many parallels, searching for direct connections between each line of every song and his private life...
However, with Brian's sense of poisonous irony, we can also count on the fact that this was someone very important in his life...and maybe it's the rendition of more such relationship breakdowns, just suddenly, in some strange melancholic mood, this ballad was born in the composer's mind.

What made Brian make such a tender statement to all the men in the venue?
We probably won't know the exact reason.

But my thoughts lead me to the topic of men's mental health, which concerns both Brian and Stefan personally and Olga had the same idea in one of her old posts.
While preparing a post about Project Alpha, I learned that the percentage of male suicides in the UK is on the rise. The social paradigm is mainly to blame, it's the pressure that leads men to suppress their emotions because that's how the male role in society has historically been set up. And it is clear that this topic does not only concern men in the UK...
And since human consciousness has been undergoing a profound transformation in recent years, it is time to say:

I don't know how you feel, for me it is a song illuminated by spring rays, those that bring rebirth after a cruel, dark, hard winter. It is, along with Speak In Tongues, the most positive song on the whole album. The song directly calls out - look at us, after all we've been through, we rise like a mythical phoenix bird from the ashes, stronger, more beautiful, happier, full of faith in a better tomorrow.

The video for this song was directed by Heroes for Zeroes and is the 24th official video of Placebo's career.

It's an absolute contrast between lived anxiety and rediscovered hope, the duality between darkness and light seems to confirm the theme not only of this song, but of the entire album.

This song has an interesting history.
For the first time, Stefan was not involved in its creation and it was not written for Placebo at all.
The co-writers of this specific one were two friends of Brian, namely 𝐀𝐦𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐧 𝐬𝐢𝐧𝐠𝐞𝐫-𝐬𝐨𝐧𝐠𝐰𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐞𝐫 𝐉𝐨𝐫𝐝𝐚𝐧 𝐏𝐚𝐠𝐞 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐒𝐭𝐞𝐯𝐞 𝐋𝐮𝐝𝐰𝐢𝐧, 𝐚 𝐁𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐬𝐡 𝐩𝐮𝐧𝐤 𝐫𝐨𝐜𝐤𝐞𝐫.

𝐁𝐫𝐢𝐚𝐧: Because… because of this connection to Ashtray Heart etc., we wrote it to sell it to someone. And we wrote it in Nicaragua, so there is Spanish in it ‘Cenicero cenicero mi corazon’. I was the only smoker, and when I was on vacation in Nicaragua I was always asking in every restaurant, in every coffee for ‘cenicero, cenicero’. We had the demo for this song, we listened to it while driving across Nicaragua and that's how the song was written. And this is the first song which is on Placebo album that I didn't write with Stefan.

However, after the final chapter of this video series, 𝑷𝒍𝒂𝒄𝒆𝒃𝒐 released two more chapters: "𝑻𝒉𝒆 𝑴𝒆𝒙𝒊𝒄𝒂𝒏 𝑬𝒑𝒊𝒍𝒐𝒈𝒖𝒆", which showed behind the scenes footage of their visit to 𝑴𝒆𝒙𝒊𝒄𝒐, and "𝑷𝒍𝒂𝒄𝒆𝒃𝒐 𝑴𝑻𝑽𝒊𝒄𝒕𝒐𝒓𝒚" which captured the moments before and after the band won the well-deserved 𝑴𝑻𝑽 𝑬𝒖𝒓𝒐𝒑𝒆 𝑴𝒖𝒔𝒊𝒄 𝑨𝒘𝒂𝒓𝒅 for '𝑩𝒆𝒔𝒕 𝑨𝒍𝒕𝒆𝒓𝒏𝒂𝒕𝒊𝒗𝒆 𝑨𝒄𝒕' . The text was written in 2011 after the autor read a quote by Brian from the 𝑩𝒂𝒕𝒕𝒍𝒆 𝑭𝒐𝒓 𝑻𝒉𝒆 𝑺𝒖𝒏 era. Battle for The Sun is described by most critics as a brighter and more optimistic album. To which critics Brian and Stefan have added nuance:

🔹 I’m a huge fan of Placebo and I’m a member of the Institute of Psychosynthesis, a branch of Human Psychology, founded by Roberto Assagioli in 1926. I’m studying to be a counselor.

🔹 Since the beginning of their careers I’ve loved the music of the band and thought that somehow 𝑩𝒓𝒊𝒂𝒏 𝒓𝒆𝒑𝒓𝒆𝒔𝒆𝒏𝒕𝒔 𝒌𝒊𝒏𝒅 𝒐𝒇 “𝒑𝒔𝒚𝒄𝒉𝒐𝒔𝒚𝒏𝒕𝒉𝒆𝒕𝒊𝒄 𝑴𝒂𝒏”. 🔹 But what is the best way to take the control of the sides if not giving them a voice, listening to them, telling of them, singing of them, expressing them, looking at them as you would be another person, experiencing a kind of empathy for them, finally accepting them and integrating them ?

🔹 Watching the documentary in the new Placebo dvd “𝑾𝒆 𝒄𝒐𝒎𝒆 𝒊𝒏 𝒑𝒊𝒆𝒄𝒆𝒔” that intuition about Brian grew even more inside me. When I heard him say the words:

🔹 This may also be true, but I think Brian and Stefan don’t like to hear the thing. And they surely are right, because saying that the last Placebo album is more beautiful because it is more optimistic is like saying depressed, lonely, sad, abused people can produce only ugly stuff, or even they haven’t the right to share their lives and their feelings because they are pessimistic then ugly. They better remain silent to not bother happy people. There is beauty in everything and I personally think the reason for the last album being better is because Placebo are growing as artists and human beings. And let me say that the literature is filled with pessimistic masterpieces (think of novels and poetries written at the war’s periods) and to be optimistic doesn’t assure an artist to make a beautiful work.

🔹 Once, when my daughter was only six, I let her listen to 𝑴𝒆𝒅𝒔. After only a minute she looked at me and said: ”Mum, I’m sorry for you, you are a loser.“ This really left me dazed. She barely knew English so I thought she had learnt that English word “looser” from some Hanna Montana’s stuff she was used to watching.

Saying that sad, depressed, stuck people are losers and that happy, combative, self confident people are winners is not completely wrong, but… 𝑡ℎ𝑖𝑠 𝑑𝑜𝑒𝑠𝑛’𝑡 𝑚𝑒𝑎𝑛 𝑜𝑛𝑒 ℎ𝑎𝑠 𝑡𝑜 𝑑𝑒𝑛𝑦 ℎ𝑖𝑠/ℎ𝑒𝑟 𝑓𝑒𝑒𝑙𝑖𝑛𝑔𝑠 𝑜𝑓 𝑤𝑒𝑎𝑘𝑛𝑒𝑠𝑠 𝑜𝑟 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑙𝑒𝑠𝑠 𝑝𝑙𝑒𝑎𝑠𝑎𝑛𝑡 𝑜𝑛𝑒𝑠 𝑗𝑢𝑠𝑡 𝑡𝑜 𝑛𝑜𝑡 𝑙𝑜𝑜𝑘 𝑙𝑖𝑘𝑒 𝑎 𝑙𝑜𝑠𝑒??.

I think it’s part of some culture, which starting from the basic statement that optimism is the foundation for victory, which I agree with, ends with the dangerous statement that everything sad, or depressing, ugly, painful has to be referred to as losers.

🔹 I can understand that at the beginning of his career Brian’s sides which mostly urged to be expressed were the most suffering, the angriest, the most repressed.

If you grew up as an abused or alienated child you’ll likely feel stuck in a bad mental frame. All the work Brian does on himself, trying to understand the emotions which are troubling inside of him “𝐢𝐧 𝐚 𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐲 𝐧𝐚𝐯𝐞𝐥-𝐠𝐚𝐳𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐝 𝐨𝐟 𝐰𝐚𝐲” as he says, is likely similar to the work that psychosynthesis suggests.

🔹 By listening to his own feelings, discovering every side of his personality and by giving them a voice, by accepting them with the tenderness of a mother, he managed to have the control of them, to synthesize the opposites in order to walk together towards a common goal, his success, that is the full expression of his potential as artist and as human being.

Brian has managed to deal with the conflict of personalities and the unmet needs he experienced in his youth.

Depending on his past experiences, since as he referred he grew up as an alienated child, he was likely to reach the age of twenty feeling a pessimistic, angry and sad young man. This doesn’t mean a depressed person doesn’t have the right to share his pain and his negative vision of life, because 𝑠ℎ𝑎𝑟𝑖𝑛𝑔 𝑖𝑠 𝑎 𝑔𝑜𝑜𝑑 𝑤𝑎𝑦 𝑡𝑜 ℎ𝑒𝑎𝑙 𝑜𝑛𝑒’𝑠 𝑤𝑜𝑢𝑛𝑑𝑠. Again he doesn’t do that to look cooler, but because he needs to share to be accepted. Brian never chose to be pessimistic. He just was like that because his heart was hurt and filled with anger. He felt a loser, but never meant to be a loser forever, for in fact all their albums are a search for a way out. And he found it ! So he’s a winner, because he felt a loser but at some point he chose to be a winner.

For that reason I disagree with that clinical psychologist who told him once, as Brian says in the documentary, “𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐛𝐞𝐜𝐚𝐮𝐬𝐞 𝐈 𝐰𝐚𝐬 𝐚𝐧 𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐢𝐬𝐭, 𝐢𝐭 𝐰𝐚𝐬 𝐥𝐢𝐤𝐞𝐥𝐲 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐈 𝐰𝐨𝐮𝐥𝐝 𝐧𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐫 𝐛𝐞 𝐡𝐚𝐩𝐩𝐲, 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐩𝐥𝐞𝐭𝐞𝐥𝐲.”

🔹 This sounds quite a weird thing to say from that psychologist because who can be totally happy forever ? 𝑨𝒔 𝒂𝒓𝒕𝒊𝒔𝒕 𝑩𝒓𝒊𝒂𝒏 𝒘𝒂𝒏𝒕𝒔 𝒕𝒐 𝒔𝒉𝒂𝒓𝒆 𝒉𝒊𝒔 𝒇𝒆𝒆𝒍𝒊𝒏𝒈𝒔, 𝒉𝒆 𝒋𝒖𝒔𝒕 𝒘𝒂𝒏𝒕𝒔 𝒕𝒐 𝒔𝒉𝒐𝒘 𝒉𝒊𝒎𝒔𝒆𝒍𝒇 𝒂𝒔 𝒉𝒆 𝒓𝒆𝒂𝒍𝒍𝒚 𝒊𝒔. He has some needs, like to receive recognition, to be accepted, to be considered as any other human being, to be loved.

🔹 Once he gets respect, appreciation, and he feels reworded and accepted for what he is, once he learns to cope with music industry’s pressures, the press’s attacks, the rock’ n’ roll lifestyle’s false rules, once he gets love from his son, friends and fans, once he gets more freedom through the money honestly gained, once he learnt to cope with his latent sides and the self-sabotage, why shouldn’t he feel happy ?

🔹 As artist he may be unrest as sitting on a volcano, but this is the foundation for creativity and the urge to always set new goals in life, that is great !

🔹 For me, I interpret this song as an internal duality. The kind of conversation you can have with yourself that sometimes is encouraging and sometimes shows you everything in black and how difficult it is to get out of this vortex of depression (𝑚𝑦 𝑏𝑟𝑜𝑘𝑒𝑛 𝑠𝑝𝑖𝑟𝑖𝑡 𝑖𝑠 𝑓𝑟𝑜𝑧𝑒𝑛 𝑡𝑜 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑐𝑜𝑟𝑒)that prevents you from really realising that the situation, whatever it is, is not as catastrophic as you think.

🔹 However, I think that the central point of the song lies in the last sentence: 𝑤𝑜𝑢𝑙𝑑𝑛'𝑡 𝑖𝑡 𝑏𝑒 𝑔𝑜𝑜𝑑 𝑖𝑓 𝑤𝑒 𝑐𝑜𝑢𝑙𝑑 𝑙𝑖𝑣𝑒 𝑤𝑖𝑡ℎ𝑜𝑢𝑡 𝑎 𝑐𝑎𝑟𝑒 ? Because in the end, that would be the solution to live happily and serenely...

💬 (𝘭𝘢𝘶𝘨𝘩𝘴) Well, it's a song that's been in my head since I was a kid. Nik Kershaw did a lot of hits when I was a kid, but the only song I liked was Wouldn't it Be Good. There's such a mood of despair in that song, even though the melody is very positive. You know, I have a list of songs I'd like to cover one day in my computer. And Nik Kershaw sounded right. When we do covers, we go into the rehearsal studio and we have fun. It's like taking a holiday. The song also has to suit us as a band, and that was the case here. Probably the best choice we made was Running Up That Hill by Kate Bush.

From a rather classical beginning, the interview slowly slips into a more serious conversation, where Brian confesses the hard times when he was younger in London, leaving him with a lack of understanding of the world towards influential people filled with egocentricity, insensitivity and therefore indifference towards the most needy people. And you'll see with his last answer that since 2009, awareness concerning environment is changing, little by little, but it is changing 🙏

💬 Well, that's the challenging equilibrium you try and strike every time you make a new record: trying to push the boundaries and limits of your sound without repeating yourself. You have to try to do something new, exciting and fresh with the band's sound and play with the band's conceived identity, but at the same time not disregarding what makes you uniquely 'you'.

💬 I think so ! The greater the body of work, the more difficult it becomes to write a fresh song; it becomes a lot more challenging. As far as longevity is concerned, I think if you look at the careers of the likes of The Cure or Depeche Mode - I use those examples because they both released albums this year, 30 years into their career - well they've made music, since day one, purely on their own terms, unaffected, unconcerned by trends, movements and fashion in music. They followed their own path and stuck to their guns, and I think that's why they're still making records which are still worthwhile listening. We're 15 years in, and that's where I'd like to be in another 15. It's not like we have any other options; we're basically unemployable, you know, so this is it.

💬 I started looking back on my career around the time of Meds [fifth studio album, released in 2006]. As a lyricist I thought I was using a great deal of gimmicks. For example, the whole chemistry/medicine cabinet routine that is Commercial for Levi or a song title that screams 'Look at Me !' that is Nancy Boy ! I made a decision that I wanted to stop using gimmicks and address the bigger questions in more everyday language where possible, and try and simplify it, I suppose. Say more by saying less, that's kinda the trip I'm on right now.

💬 Everybody who writes wants to write stuff that's timeless and doesn't date, really. I think you have to be very careful if you want to do that. You have to tap into the spirit of the age but at the same time write something that transcends it. I don't think that using incredibly culturally specific language enables you to do that. So, I'm trying to transcend that and write something that can stand up to the music that I grew up listening to. Take Leonard Cohen, for example. There's a universality in his music and a simplicity which makes it appreciable and meaningful in any decade, any century really. I think that's what I'm trying to do, hopefully in some way making a difference.

💬 It's good to have an intelligent person running one of the most powerful countries and someone who generally cares. I'm less sympathetic towards the economic problems that exist right now than some people might be, because I have never been able to understand the whole culture of living beyond your means. I mean, I've been unemployed for a long time, I've been homeless, I've slept in train stations and I didn't spend money that didn't belong to me. So I find it difficult to be incredibly sympathetic with the culture of avarice that has got us into this position.
The other thing that annoys me about this whole focus on our economic woes is that nobody is talking about the environment anymore, and if anything is going to get us in the ass, it's going to be that. The hole in the ozone layer is still there, 20 years after they discovered it, and it's getting bigger and bigger, yet this isn't news. I want to be involved in the world. I think it comes from being a parent; you want to try and contribute to make a place for your children to grow up in that's hopefully a little bit better than where you were. Unfortunately, it seems that we are heading straight towards some form of environmental armageddon, and perhaps we deserve to go the same way as the dinosaurs for our treatment of the planet.

🔸 Again, it was a sensible and thoughtful interview that Brian granted us, but it's all about the clever questions as well. I definitely don't miss the days when journalists focused on Brian's appearance or the band's drug use !

🔸 Brian has long mentioned the universal nature of his lyrics and the universality of his songs. The fact that the band has been around for almost 30 years, there is no denying that Placebo's longevity is due in part to these two characteristics, amongst the poetry, the imagery, the tortured and tormented music, and Brian's unique and unrivalled voice 💖

🔸 What I like most of all are those people who manage to overcome the resentment they might have accumulated during disastrous periods in their lives to transform it into altruism and avoid reproducing what they have suffered or experienced. Knowing how to learn life's lessons with philosophy. It is so admirable and encouraging.

Speaking to Placebo’s 🔹𝗕𝗥𝗜𝗔𝗡 𝗠𝗢𝗟𝗞𝗢🔹, frontman of the band that once carried the title of “Britain most outrageous music group” like a pennant, you’re expecting anything ”“ tantrums, arrogance, reticence, impatience ”“ anything but the practiced spiel he’s now dishing as he talks about their sixth album Battle For the Sun. In hindsight, that shouldn’t have been surprising at all. If there’s one thing Placebo have mastered in all their fifteen years, it’s the art of always staying a step ahead of the public’s expectations. It’s also the reason why they’re one of Britain’s most consistently successful bands. The band that first gained notoriety for their alternative sexualities, debauched lifestyle and frontman Molko’s androgynous image are eager to shed the ghosts of their past and move beyond their image. .../***/


Their latest effort, 𝐁𝐚𝐭𝐭𝐥𝐞 𝐅𝐨𝐫 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐒𝐮𝐧, though, is the band’s sunshine album. When asked to describe the album, Molko heaves the tiniest of sighs and launches into a well-practised description:

That the band’s sunniest album should come at the most tempestuous time in their career, is the kind of irony Molko relishes. He doesn’t cloak the bitterness and pain that the exit of Steve Hewitt brought about, but he’s spoken about it so often now, it comes out without emotion or rancour.

With Hewitt’s departure, fans had begun to worry that the end of Placebo was near. But Molko dismisses the fears.
The 22-year-old much-tattooed Forrest was the drummer of punk rock band Evaline, who opened for Placebo during their Meds tour in the United States.

In many ways, Battle For the Sun marks the journey of Placebo from sinners to saints. It’s not only the music that’s changed; the band members’ lives have taken entirely different directions. Gender-bending, bisexuality-flaunting Molko today is the proud father of a four-year-old with his steady girlfriend Helena Berg.

But the band’s shift from their hedonistic beginnings to “responsible citizens” was officially sealed by their appearance on the MTV EXIT campaign to increase awareness about human trafficking. The third EXIT concert was held in Cambodia, outside the magnificent 12th century Angkor Wat temple complex, the recorded performance of which will be released as a bonus DVD with the Battle For the Sun box set. It’s when talking about the campaign that Molko’s voice really comes alive,

Molko’s also excited about the possibility of coming to India.
