๐Ÿ”น The song has been covered by Placebo in 2009 and can be found as a ๐’ƒ-๐’”๐’Š๐’…

It's quite interesting that Placebo covers this song because of the lyrics that fit perfectly with the Placebo spirit.

๐Ÿ”น The song is presented as a conversation between two completely different people (๐‘‡โ„Ž๐‘’ ๐‘๐‘œ๐‘™๐‘‘ ๐‘–๐‘  ๐‘๐‘–๐‘ก๐‘–๐‘›๐‘” ๐‘‡โ„Ž๐‘Ÿ๐‘œ๐‘ข๐‘”โ„Ž ๐‘’๐‘Ž๐‘โ„Ž ๐‘Ž๐‘›๐‘‘ ๐‘’๐‘ฃ๐‘’๐‘Ÿ๐‘ฆ ๐‘›๐‘’๐‘Ÿ๐‘ฃ๐‘’ ๐‘Ž๐‘›๐‘‘ ๐‘“๐‘–๐‘๐‘Ÿ๐‘’ / ๐‘‡โ„Ž๐‘’ โ„Ž๐‘’๐‘Ž๐‘ก ๐‘–๐‘  ๐‘ ๐‘ก๐‘–๐‘“๐‘™๐‘–๐‘›๐‘” ๐ต๐‘ข๐‘Ÿ๐‘›๐‘–๐‘›๐‘” ๐‘š๐‘’ ๐‘ข๐‘ ๐‘“๐‘Ÿ๐‘œ๐‘š ๐‘กโ„Ž๐‘’ ๐‘–๐‘›๐‘ ๐‘–๐‘‘๐‘’)who are unhappy with their respective situations and are filled with envy towards each other's posture (๐‘กโ„Ž๐‘’ ๐‘”๐‘Ÿ๐‘Ž๐‘ ๐‘  ๐‘–๐‘  ๐‘”๐‘Ÿ๐‘’๐‘’๐‘›๐‘’๐‘Ÿ ๐‘Ž๐‘™๐‘™ ๐‘œ๐‘ฃ๐‘’๐‘Ÿ ๐‘กโ„Ž๐‘’๐‘Ÿ๐‘’). A song about envy, dissatisfaction and the inner struggle it takes to get there, to feel good / better.

๐Ÿ”น For me, I interpret this song as an internal duality. The kind of conversation you can have with yourself that sometimes is encouraging and sometimes shows you everything in black and how difficult it is to get out of this vortex of depression (๐‘š๐‘ฆ ๐‘๐‘Ÿ๐‘œ๐‘˜๐‘’๐‘› ๐‘ ๐‘๐‘–๐‘Ÿ๐‘–๐‘ก ๐‘–๐‘  ๐‘“๐‘Ÿ๐‘œ๐‘ง๐‘’๐‘› ๐‘ก๐‘œ ๐‘กโ„Ž๐‘’ ๐‘๐‘œ๐‘Ÿ๐‘’)that prevents you from really realising that the situation, whatever it is, is not as catastrophic as you think.

๐Ÿ”น However, I think that the central point of the song lies in the last sentence: I love the contrast between the music and the lyrics of this song. The music is quite light, pop, while the lyrics are dark. And it's one of the songs that we grew up with, so we have a soft spot for it. So we decided to record it as a b-side for one of our singles. We did it mostly for fun. The recording session was very enjoyable.

๐Ÿ’ฌ (๐˜ญ๐˜ข๐˜ถ๐˜จ๐˜ฉ๐˜ด) Well, it's a song that's been in my head since I was a kid. Nik Kershaw did a lot of hits when I was a kid, but the only song I liked was Wouldn't it Be Good. There's such a mood of despair in that song, even though the melody is very positive. You know, I have a list of songs I'd like to cover one day in my computer. And Nik Kershaw sounded right. When we do covers, we go into the rehearsal studio and we have fun. It's like taking a holiday. The song also has to suit us as a band, and that was the case here. Probably the best choice we made was Running Up That Hill by Kate Bush.

It spent three weeks at number four on the UK charts and became a hit throughout Europe, as well as a top 10 hit in Canada and Australia.
According to Kershaw, the song was about "always wanting it better than everyone else", a concept which the director of the video [graphic designer Storm Thorgerson] further developed and integrated into the video plot of Kershaw being the alien who steps into other people's shoes. But in the end the alien realises that it wasn't such a good idea at all, and decides to return to his home planet.

But when it comes to solos and stuff, I’m not the most spontaneous guy on the block. If I just sit down and play over a few chords, it sounds pretty much like everybody else. I’ve got the same licks as everybody else, pretty much, and it doesn’t satisfy me as someone listening to the record. So what I usually end up doing is just looping the track and just singing different bits over it and then sticking it together and then learning how to play them. I still do that. Obviously if I’m singing it, it’s a direct line from my brain to my mouth, and it’s just ‘bang!’ there it is. "

I think, in their cover, Placebo underlined and intensified what they exactly liked about the song. They made the melody even more upbeat for stronger contrast to the desperate lyrics. It’s kind of their emblematic duality, isn’t it?
