He also loved drawing and writing poetry and won awards for his poetry in high school. He formed a band called ๐‘ฎ๐’†๐’๐’‡๐’‡ ๐‘ด๐’๐’•๐’• ๐’‚๐’๐’… ๐‘ป๐’‰๐’† ๐‘ด๐’๐’•๐’•๐’๐’†๐’”, which was short-lived. In London, ๐‘บ๐’š๐’… ๐‘ฉ๐’‚๐’“๐’“๐’†๐’•๐’• reconnected with ๐‘น๐’๐’ˆ๐’†๐’“ ๐‘พ๐’‚๐’•๐’†๐’“๐’”, his school friend from Cambridge. ๐ŸŽค"For me, the first Pink Floyd album is a work of absolute genius. It's completely different from everything else they've done because by the time they get to write their second album, they kick out Syd Barrett, who started the band and who wrote all their songs, and then they become something else. What is great about this record is it sits on the border of garage rock from the 60s and psychedelia, you know, because essentially, Syd Barrett was very much inspired by the blues and it's a raw moment captured in time before psychedelia sort of ran away with itself (laughs). There's still like a real rough edge to it and you can really hear it on 'Lucifer Sam' and the guitars… there's no nice guitars, (laughs) but it don't have to be nice to be beautiful."

⭐๐‡๐ข ๐ฌ๐จ๐ฎ๐ฅ๐ฆ๐š๐ญ๐ž๐ฌ,
it's Wednesday and therefore our favorite topic can continue again.

The first lullaby puts you in the mood for a gentle evening mainly thanks to Brian's voice, even though the lyrics take us again to the dark depths of the human ego.

๐Ÿ”น๐ŸŽถ„๐“๐‡๐ˆ๐’ ๐๐ˆ๐‚๐“๐”๐‘๐„“๐ŸŽถ๐Ÿ”น

This piano ballad is a beautiful intimate confession of saying goodbye to my old self who was subject to self-destructive relationships. There are a lot of references to my old life... and some moments I'm really not proud of...

Sometimes I too 'burned' emotional cigarettes on the chest of the man who loved me. Such relationships are always self-destructive for both parties, because no matter how inflated your ego is, your heart will always show you that you have not behaved properly.

That's why I initially took this song as a mirror setting. That's what Placebo music can do. We are not always the victim in a relationship, sometimes it is necessary to admit that we have played the game on our side of the field and don't always play by the rules.

Today I know that self-awareness is the most important part of lived experiences. What my role was, what should I have understood from this situation and how important it is to be able to forgive, both myself and others.

It is important to know what we are willing to do to preserve a certain image we have of ourselves.
And it's important to remember that how we see ourselves can be different from how others see us.

This epic story can be interpreted in different ways, in any case, performed by Brian, it's a breathtaking lullaby.

This song always connects me to my meditative moments by the sea.
I live inland, but I have been to the sea many times and I return with love every time. I always need to find a quiet place where I can sit undisturbed, watch the waves move, feel the sand moving under my feet and just be... part of the whole universe...

And when I look at that amount of untamed water that has tremendous power, I can imagine the pain of millions of people who have lost a loved one at sea. This great mass of water gives and takes life.

Although Sinead's original Jackie is beautiful, Brian makes me feel more of the pain, the non-acceptance of reality, the denial that it can't be over yet. The false hope that everyone must have been wrong. My love is still alive and coming for me.

Enjoy a great live performance of Jackie from ⭐๐‹๐ข๐ฏ๐ž ๐Œ๐Ÿ” ๐๐ซ๐ข๐ฏ๐š๐ญ๐ž ๐‚๐จ๐ง๐œ๐ž๐ซ๐ญ ๐…๐ซ๐š๐ง๐œ๐ž ๐Ÿ๐ŸŽ๐ŸŽ๐Ÿ” and I'm really looking forward to

PJ Harvey massively impressed Brian when he did his first steps in music and stayed one of his favourite artists forever.
๐Ÿ“ข๐๐ซ๐ข๐š๐ง: "Music is about expressing things you can’t in everyday life. A lot of what has pushed me forward is desire and I have expressed that in my songwriting – perhaps because it’s safer! I’ve always found music that is carnal very attractive but not in the most obvious way. [...] A lot of Polly Harvey’s early work was tapped into a sense of yearning and desire which I understood.”

Primarily known as a vocalist and guitarist, PJ Harvey is also proficient with a wide range of instruments. She possesses an expansive contralto vocal range.
✨Born on October 9th, 1969, in Bridport, Dorset, Harvey began her career in 1988 when she joined local band ๐‘จ๐’–๐’•๐’๐’Ž๐’‚๐’•๐’Š๐’„ ๐‘ซ๐’๐’‚๐’Ž๐’Š๐’๐’Š as a vocalist, guitarist and saxophonist. In 1991, she formed an eponymous trio called PJ Harvey that released two studio albums called ๐‘ซ๐’“๐’š (1992) and ๐‘น๐’Š๐’… ๐’๐’‡ ๐‘ด๐’† (1993). Since 1995, Harvey has released seven studio albums as solo artist and did a significant number of collaborations with various musicians such as

✨In both 2001 and 2011, PJ Harvey received ๐Œ๐ž๐ซ๐œ๐ฎ๐ซ๐ฒ ๐๐ซ๐ข๐ณ๐ž for ๐‘บ๐’•๐’๐’“๐’Š๐’†๐’” ๐’‡๐’“๐’๐’Ž ๐’•๐’‰๐’† ๐‘ช๐’Š๐’•๐’š, ๐‘บ๐’•๐’๐’“๐’Š๐’†๐’” ๐’‡๐’“๐’๐’Ž ๐’•๐’‰๐’† ๐‘บ๐’†๐’‚ (2000) and ๐‘ณ๐’†๐’• ๐‘ฌ๐’๐’ˆ๐’๐’‚๐’๐’… ๐‘บ๐’‰๐’‚๐’Œ๐’† (2011), that made her the only artist to have been awarded the prize twice. Not everyone’s cup of tea, Polly suggests she is often grossly misunderstood:

✨Outside her better-known music career, Harvey is also an occasional artist and actress. In 1998, she appeared in Hal Hartley's film ๐“๐ก๐ž ๐๐จ๐จ๐ค ๐จ๐Ÿ ๐‹๐ข๐Ÿ๐ž as Magdalena—a modern-day character based on the Biblical Mary Magdalene—and had a cameo role as a Playboy Bunny in ๐€ ๐๐ฎ๐ง๐ง๐ฒ ๐†๐ข๐ซ๐ฅ'๐ฌ ๐“๐š๐ฅ๐ž, a short film directed by Sarah Miles, in which she also performs "Nina in Ecstasy". ✨Harvey is also an accomplished ๐’”๐’„๐’–๐’๐’‘๐’•๐’๐’“ who has had several pieces exhibited at the Lamont Gallery and the Bridport Arts Centre.
✨In October 2015, Harvey published her first collection of poetry entitled ๐‘ป๐’‰๐’† ๐‘ฏ๐’๐’๐’๐’๐’˜ ๐’๐’‡ ๐‘ป๐’‰๐’† ๐‘ฏ๐’‚๐’๐’…. In April 2022, she presented a book-length narrative poem titled ๐‘ถ๐’“๐’๐’‚๐’Ž.

๐‘ฉ๐’“๐’Š๐’‚๐’ often mentioned how PJ Harvey influenced his songwriting.
๐Ÿ“ข๐๐ซ๐ข๐š๐ง: “After I moved to London, I heard PJ Harvey for the first time and the emotional intensity and depth of the album “Dry” also had a very, very big effect on me. I guess when I went into the idea of a band I kind of wanted to marry the kind of dissonant, atonal beauty of Sonic Youth's experimentalism with a kind of pained confessional and highly emotional quality that PJ Harvey's music has."

I was struck by how individual her voice was and then by how taut and nervous the instrumentation was. It was so expressive of internal torment, desire, lust and rejection. She’s always been very brave, she’s not afraid to make a record that sounds like someone bleeding on you."

we have a second ♦️๐—”๐—ก๐—ก๐—œ๐—ฉ๐—˜๐—ฅ๐—ฆ๐—”๐—ฅ๐—ฌ♦️ to celebrate: On October 7th 2016 Placebo did not only release the retrospective album “A place for us to dream” about which we talked earlier today, but also the limited edition vinyl EP and download ๐ŸŽถ“๐—Ÿ๐—œ๐—™๐—˜'๐—ฆ ๐—ช๐—›๐—”๐—ง ๐—ฌ๐—ข๐—จ ๐— ๐—”๐—ž๐—˜ ๐—œ๐—ง"๐ŸŽถ.

The record consists of six songs, half of them cover versions. It was produced by Adam Noble and Placebo. Stefan Olsdal, Bill Lloyd and Adam Noble engineered the tracks.
In an interview with NME in October 2017 Brian stated that two songs on the EP, the Talk Talk cover “Life's what you make it” and the Placebo single “Jesus' son”, are “possibly two of the most commercial tracks that we've ever done. We have a tendency to react allergically against what we’ve just done, so it's highly likely that the next thing we do will be something akin to career suicide. ” Well, it wasn't, as we know by now. ;-)

In June 2017 a video for the EP's title song was released. It was directed by Sasha Rainbow and filmed at Agbogbloshie in Accra, Ghana, the site of one of the world's largest electronic waste dumps. The video concept by Brian was loosely based around the original 1986 Talk Talk clip in which frontman Mark Hollis and company are surrounded by nature and “little beasties crawling over leaves”. What he had in mind was an updated version wherein Placebo “would be robots playing instruments and that e-waste would replace nature, as it appears to be doing only a few decades after the song’s original release” (Xs Noise, June 5th 2017) . But Brian also said that the video is not anti-technology. ”It is about the triumph of the human spirit in the face of adversity that has not been chosen” (Gigwise, June 15th 2017). He added that he hopes it will make the viewer think about the repercussions of just throwing away tech that doesn't work anymore. ”There are several new and ingenious ways to recycle them these days. Some companies will even give you money for it. All it takes is a little more effort.”

In 1998 Placebo recorded a cover version of this song for the glam rock movie “Velvet Goldmine”, in which Brian, Stefan and Steve Hewitt appeared as actors. Like in real life they embodied musicians, and allegedly Marc Bolan was the prototype for Brian's character in the film. “20th Century Boy“ was also released as b-side on Placebo's 1998 single “You don't care about us“.
The original by T. Rex was a stand-alone single released in 1973. It directly entered the UK Chart at number 3 and peaked three weeks in a row at that position.

Marc Bolan was born as Mark Field in London on September 30th 1947. As already mentioned above the guitarist, singer and songwriter was the frontman of the band T. Rex and one of the pioneers of the glam rock movement. His appearance on music show Top of the Pops in March 1971 wearing glitter and satins is often cited as its beginning. The T. Rex album “Electric Warrior“ (also 1971) has been described as the essentiall kick-starter of the glam rock craze. From 1971 to 1973 the band was extremely popular and placed 11 singles in the UK Charts.

On September 16th 1977, two weeks before his 30th birthday, Marc died in a car crash. It's a strange fact that he never learned to drive because he feared a premature death. The car was driven by Bolan's girlfriend Gloria Jones who only suffered a broken arm in the accident she caused.
In 2020 Marc Bolan was posthumously inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

๐Ÿงฌ ๐‘ท๐’๐’‚๐’„๐’†๐’ƒ๐’'๐’” ๐‘ซ๐‘ต๐‘จ... this is a topic that seems obvious at first glance but is rather complex.

๐Ÿงฌ In 2018, ๐‘ผ๐‘ซ๐’Š๐’”๐’„๐’๐’—๐’†๐’“ has tried this exercise of finding the origins of Placebo. There are some very good points, as you can read in this article I'm sharing with you today.

Photo credit: Alex Weston / Edit and translation by Laetitia

◾ At first glance, the seventies have little in common with the nineties. There the debauched rock'n'roll lifestyle reigned, here the techno optimism of the early internet age. But in the nineties, rock music made a comeback. Grunge put on flannel shirts instead of spandex suits, Britpop dominated Britain. Placebo brought the two together and made the glam of yesteryear coexist with the hodgepodge that threatened to take over the pop world before the end of the second millennium.

◾Placebo frontman Brian Molko never tired of describing his band as outsiders. As phraseological as it sounds, it's true: Placebo's Nancy Boys rebelled against the legginess of the rock world, talked about bisexuality and depression. "We were reacting strongly to the machismo, the fan chants and the revisionism of Britpop," Molko stressed in an interview. "We wanted to make a political statement with the clothes we wore and the make-up we put on. They succeeded: The rock world became a little more queer with the band's success.

◾ Placebo is the name of a fake drug - a pill that doesn't work. But Placebo is also Latin for "๐ผ ๐‘ค๐‘–๐‘™๐‘™ ๐‘๐‘™๐‘’๐‘Ž๐‘ ๐‘’" and that's exactly what Molko, Stefan Osdal and their drummers - Robert Schultzberg, Steve Hewitt and more recently Steve Forrest - did with a sound that served punk as well as pop, that could be wonderfully quiet and deafening. It's a sound that goes straight to the heart and appeals not just to the fringe. To find out who inspired it, you have to look at Placebo's musical DNA.

◾ Given Placebo's history, it's not surprising that Placebo is an outsider in the rock world. Brian Molko and Stefan Olsdal attended an American school in Luxembourg as teenagers, far from any musical activity. Both hung out in different cliques and never spoke to each other, until they met years later on the London Underground. Molko saw that the skinny Olsdal had a guitar strapped to his back and quickly invited him to play solo.

◾ It was a providential meeting. Totally enthused by Molko's talent, the native Swede insisted on making common cause with the Briton. They borrowed the name of the project from one of the most bizarre outsiders in rock history. "๐ผ๐‘ก ๐‘๐‘Ž๐‘š๐‘’ ๐‘“๐‘Ÿ๐‘œ๐‘š ๐‘Ž ๐ถ๐‘Ž๐‘๐‘ก๐‘Ž๐‘–๐‘› ๐ต๐‘’๐‘’๐‘“โ„Ž๐‘’๐‘Ž๐‘Ÿ๐‘ก ๐‘™๐‘–๐‘›๐‘’," Olsdal recalls of the band's first name. "๐‘†โ„Ž๐‘’ ๐‘ข๐‘ ๐‘’๐‘‘ ๐‘š๐‘’ ๐‘™๐‘–๐‘˜๐‘’ ๐‘Ž๐‘› ๐‘Ž๐‘ โ„Ž๐‘ก๐‘Ÿ๐‘Ž๐‘ฆ โ„Ž๐‘’๐‘Ž๐‘Ÿ๐‘ก". With Placebo, the two men came up with an even catchier name. "๐‘Œ๐‘œ๐‘ข ๐‘๐‘Ž๐‘› ๐‘–๐‘š๐‘Ž๐‘”๐‘–๐‘›๐‘’ โ„Ž๐‘œ๐‘ค 40,000 ๐‘๐‘’๐‘œ๐‘๐‘™๐‘’ ๐‘ โ„Ž๐‘œ๐‘ข๐‘ก ๐‘–๐‘ก ๐‘œ๐‘ข๐‘ก...", the bassist explains. Ashtray Heart, however, is also the title of a song on the album Battle for the Sun. The lyrics clearly allude to Captain Beefheart and his Magic Band.

◾Outsider or not: with their first album Placebo, the trio - which included Schultzberg alongside Molko and Olsdal - was a real hit. But now the two leaders of the band are not entirely satisfied with their first work. They find much of what got them media attention at the time too pop, too punk, too adolescent. They were compared to the first post-punk generation, when the inspiration was quite different.

◾"๐‘Š๐‘’ ๐‘ก๐‘Ÿ๐‘–๐‘’๐‘‘ ๐‘ก๐‘œ ๐‘ก๐‘Ž๐‘˜๐‘’ ๐‘†๐‘œ๐‘›๐‘–๐‘ ๐‘Œ๐‘œ๐‘ข๐‘กโ„Ž ๐‘Ž๐‘›๐‘‘ ๐ท๐‘’๐‘๐‘’๐‘โ„Ž๐‘’ ๐‘€๐‘œ๐‘‘๐‘’, ๐‘กโ„Ž๐‘Ÿ๐‘œ๐‘ค ๐‘กโ„Ž๐‘’๐‘š ๐‘Ž๐‘”๐‘Ž๐‘–๐‘›๐‘ ๐‘ก ๐‘กโ„Ž๐‘’ ๐‘ค๐‘Ž๐‘™๐‘™ ๐‘Ž๐‘›๐‘‘ ๐‘ ๐‘’๐‘’ ๐‘คโ„Ž๐‘Ž๐‘ก ๐‘ค๐‘œ๐‘ข๐‘™๐‘‘ ๐‘ ๐‘ก๐‘–๐‘๐‘˜," Molko recalls in an interview. American no wave here, British new wave there: clearly Placebo had absolutely nothing to do with the galloping Britpop trend, nor did they want to. But they have remained true to Depeche Mode throughout their career. In 2003, they covered the then ten-year-old song I Feel You from Depeche Mode's seminal album Songs of Faith and Devotion.

◾Unlike their Britpop contemporaries, who found their inspiration mainly in the sixties and seventies, Placebo either orientated themselves directly to the pulse of the present, or to the exciting early days of the British indie sound. So it's no surprise that the B-side of their 1997 single Nancy Boy contains a cover of indie heroes The Smiths, Bigmouth Strikes Again. Molko's nasally, decidedly androgynous voice seemed a perfect update to Morrissey's iodised vocal style.

◾Like Britpop after them, the Smiths represented a certain image of British culture with which Placebo could not and would not be associated. But in the romantic gestures of Morrissey's band and guitar genius Johnny Marr, Molko and his pals found something else: style. Few bands embodied musical and lyrical elegance as confidently as the Smiths.

◾Speaking of "Bigmouth": sometimes Molko would have preferred - like Morrissey - to keep his mouth shut. About what ? Well, about his bisexuality, which also became a declaration of war in Nancy Boy. "I've always been open about my sexuality, because I was quite a go-getter in the early days of Placebo," he admits quietly. "My coming-out felt important to take a stand. Looking back a quarter of a century, it's fair to say that Molko did exactly the right thing: Placebo started a small revolution.

◾But they were not alone. Suede established themselves in the late eighties and early nineties with a sound that is considered a precursor to the Britpop movement. But Suede also liked to flirt with the glam-rock aesthetic and play with his sexuality. "I'm a bisexual man who has never had a homosexual experience," frontman Brett Anderson once proclaimed. It is this phrase that would have inspired Nancy Boy.

◾Suede and Placebo were far from the only ones to openly embrace their fluid interpretation of male sexuality. Their master mind was David Bowie. Much has been said and written about Bowie's sexuality, not all of it positive: he is said to have had sex with minors, and there are whispers that his concessions to bisexuality were just a publicity stunt. In any case: by bringing a new image of masculinity to the stage and by transforming himself from time to time, he became a role model for entire generations.

◾In 1996, Bowie invited Placebo on a joint tour and even appeared in an alternative version of the title track from their album Without You I'm Nothing. The band has repeatedly shown how much Bowie influenced them. This is particularly true of their participation in the film Velvet Goldmine, loosely based on Bowie's life.

◾The band made several guest star appearances in this cult film, and can also be heard on the soundtrack. For Velvet Goldmine, they recorded a cover of T-Rex's 20th Century Boy, Marc Bolan's glam rock classic. Although the garish aesthetic of glam rock is undoubtedly one of Placebo's main influences, the band has never been content with trying to revive this short-lived genre.

◾The Black Market Music album was the first time Placebo had expressed their full potential. Although Molko is upset about the poor production sound of this groundbreaking record, he cannot deny that his band has rarely sounded more coherent. In terms of content, too, Placebo were able for the first time to realise what their mastermind had in mind, weaving dense, lyrical lyrics that had no pubescent charge.

◾In the song Slave to the Wage, for example, Molko describes, over Olsdal's feverish bass riff, the bleak daily reality of a 9 to 5. There is no doubt that as rock stars, a settled working life meant pure hell for the trio - at the time Steve Hewitt was still behind the gun range. As well as the distinctive guitar sound of Pavements Texas Never Whispers, which Placebo sampled for the track, the text also alludes to Bob Dylan's Maggie's Farm: '๐˜š๐˜ช๐˜ค๐˜ฌ ๐˜ข๐˜ฏ๐˜ฅ ๐˜ต๐˜ช๐˜ณ๐˜ฆ๐˜ฅ ๐˜ฐ๐˜ง ๐˜”๐˜ข๐˜จ๐˜จ๐˜ช๐˜ฆ'๐˜ด ๐˜ง๐˜ข๐˜ณ๐˜ฎ / ๐˜š๐˜ฉ๐˜ฆ'๐˜ด ๐˜ข ๐˜ฃ๐˜ช๐˜ต๐˜ค๐˜ฉ, ๐˜ธ๐˜ช๐˜ต๐˜ฉ ๐˜ฃ๐˜ณ๐˜ฐ๐˜ฌ๐˜ฆ๐˜ฏ ๐˜ข๐˜ณ๐˜ฎ๐˜ด ๐˜ต๐˜ฐ ๐˜ธ๐˜ข๐˜ท๐˜ฆ / ๐˜ ๐˜ฐ๐˜ถ๐˜ณ ๐˜ธ๐˜ฐ๐˜ณ๐˜ณ๐˜ช๐˜ฆ๐˜ด, ๐˜ข๐˜ฏ๐˜ฅ ๐˜ค๐˜ข๐˜ณ๐˜ฆ๐˜ด, ๐˜จ๐˜ฐ๐˜ฐ๐˜ฅ๐˜ฃ๐˜บ๐˜ฆ'. ◾It is clear that Placebo has always represented and still represents a certain attitude to life. Outsiders on the one hand, creative and full of energy on the other. No wonder Placebo also loves PJ Harvey. When the band presented a cover of Hardly Wait - first released in 1993 on Harvey's legendary 4-track demo LP - on the B-side of their single The Never-Ending Why in 2009, it was a long-overdue tribute to the fantastic Polly Jean.

◾Well, maybe Kate Bush. The latter's hit Running Up That Hill (A Deal With God) is also an integral part of the Placebo repertoire. Their cover was first released as a bonus track on the US version of the Meds album and quickly became a fan favourite. "We cover songs that we love," said Olsdal. "We do it for fun in B-side sessions. We've covered a lot of bands, especially from the eighties. Depeche Mode and even Robert Palmer. Their version of Running Up That Hill, however, was to be very special.

◾"We're huge fans of Kate Bush and when it comes to this song, we think the lyrics have real depth, which is not noticeable in the original because she sings so fast," Olsdal explained of his band's approach. ◾Placebo has always been open to its influences, has dedicated solemn covers to its heroes and heroines and has always shown them respect, even behind the scenes. The same cannot be said for the bands who, for their part, owe a lot to Placebo. "You lose hair", Blackmail singer Aydo Abay is said to have joked to Brian Molko when he met the Briton backstage at the Melt! festival one day. Is this true? We don't know.

๐Ÿงฌ On the other hand, I find that the comparison with glam rock is often overemphasized despite Brian, Stefan and Steve Hewitt's constant reminders (at the time) that this musical genre was never a major influence on their music. I strongly believe that if they had never made an appearance in Velvet Goldmine, the glam image would not have stuck to Placebo so much. I may be wrong, but Placebo would never have covered 20th Cebtury Boy if not for Todd Haynes' film. Of course, David Bowie was one of the main artists to use these glam tendencies and to play them to excess, but this is not what influenced Placebo, as Brian reminded us during an interview in Paris in 1998:

๐Ÿ’ฌ That was the first time I actually met them. I'd seen them playing before in a gig, I'd seen them already at festivals but MTV was where we first met, in 1998. It was a Placebo special on MTV. But I think they kind of liked my vibe and they asked MTV: 'Can Eddy do the interview ?' So I was very touched. And that was the first time we met. They played a gig and I did the interview with Brian, Stef and Steve at that time. And then Brian suggested that we went to a pub afterwards and had a few drinks, a chat, exchanged numbers and stay touched and over the years we became friends.

⬛ Big fan of Jane's Addiction, ๐„๐๐๐ฒ always wanted to cover this song with electronic sounds. Once the recording was done, the question was who would provide the vocals for the song. And this is the story of how ๐๐ซ๐ข๐š๐ง was selected:

๐Ÿ’ฌ We first felt that Brian would overshadow us, so prepared to contact Robert, but we then switched sides, I think, because were both such huge Placebo fans and really relished the chance to work with Brian. But it was only a snowballs chance in hell, Brian was a busy man. I texted him and he replied that he knew and loved that song, but couldn’t make any promises. I sent the track, and within 24 hours had a hilarious message back saying: “I love it. I’m doing it. I won’t let you use anybody else on this, I’m free on ONE DAY this year, and I’m coming to your studio”.

He did. With a cold. But it was now or never. Brian had this incredible tea called ‘Throat Coat’, or something, an American, medicinal brew containing ‘slippery elm bark’. I tasted some and it was like magic! It literally coats the back of your throat in this yummy, slippery stuff, so you don’t get that horrid scratchy feeling from a sore throat. Brian said it’s the ‘singers’ best kept secret’. That combined with the brandy he sent me off to buy -purely for medicinal purposes – in miniature bottles did the trick and Brian laid down, I think, one of his best ever vocals. We really stretched him and he rocked it like the true pro he is.

I don’t think Brian has ever recorded a vocal in such scummy conditions, in front of a multi-stained, upturned sofa, masquerading as an impromptu vocal booth in the Coopers control room. Now I look forward to the day he sings it live with us.

⬛ On the Losers' Bandcamp, you can read this anecdote, which is actually quite hilarious:

๐Ÿ’ฌ The album features very special guest Brian Molko from Placebo singing on Losers cover of Jane Addiction’s Summertime Rolls’, the instrumental of which Eddy and Tom sent to Brian to consider putting the vocals onto. Within 24 hours of hearing the track Brian called the Losers to threaten them…..” If you let anyone else sing on this track I’ll have them killed !” Thankfully Robert Harvey of The Music, lives on.

It was recorded on October 1, 1970. She died three days later at the age of 27 from an overdose on 4 October 1970. The song Mercedes Benz is therefore one of the last songs recorded by Janis Joplin.

๐Ÿ”น Janis Joplin was born in Texas and hitchhiked to San Francisco where she began her career. She drew her inspiration from the blues. She was probably one of the first female artists to leave her mark on the history of rock. She indulged in all kinds of excesses before her tragic end.

๐Ÿ”น Janis is one of those icons of 70s rock who, despite a short but dazzling career, will leave a lasting mark on music.

๐Ÿ”น Janis recorded the song a cappella. Her untimely death did not allow her to add instrumentals. A rather lively song, the lyrics are resolutely second-rate: she implores God to give her a Mercedes Benz car because all her friends drive Porsches and after so many years of work, she thinks she has earned it. She also takes the opportunity to ask God to give her a colour television (only rich people had them at the time the song was released) and is prepared to wait for Him every day and night.

๐Ÿ”น For the story, at 5 o'clock in the afternoon, the band decided to do the show anyway and borrowed ๐‘ฑ๐’๐’”๐’‰ ๐‘ฏ๐’๐’Ž๐’Ž๐’† (of Eagles of Death Metal) for his drum kit and the venue (House of Blues) for its piano. The band played an acoustic set of about 70 minutes during which they also played Jackie and Hurt by Nine Inch Nails. Brian has always claimed his admiration for Janis Joplin with an atypical voice.

๐Ÿ’ฌ I’ve always been obsessed with voices that are unique like from Billie Holiday, Janis Joplin, Bob Dylan, Leonard Cohen, Bjork, Polly Harvey.

๐Ÿ”น The anecdote was shared on Placebo's official website on January 9 ,2004:

" ๐‘ท๐‘ณ๐‘จ๐‘ช๐‘ฌ๐‘ฉ๐‘ถ ๐‘ฎ๐‘ถ ๐‘จ๐‘ช๐‘ถ๐‘ผ๐‘บ๐‘ป๐‘ฐ๐‘ช!

After a whirlwind tour of Mexico last week, where the band played a club show to over 4,000 people in Guadalajara and then went on to headline a football stadium in Mexico City in front of 35,000 people, they returned to the USA on Monday December 1, only to have their equipment held up by customs.

This left the band in a tricky situation, as they had a sold-out show that evening in Anaheim, California, nearly 7 hours from where the equipment was being held! At 5pm the band decided that 'the show must go on', equipment or no equipment. So borrowing Josh Homme's (from Eagles of Death Metal) drumkit and the venue's, House of Blues, piano, the band set about designing a new acoustic set for that evenings show.

The show still lasted nearly 70 minutes, which also included much banter about the days events with the audience. The set list for the evening was as follows:

SPECIAL K
THIS PICTURE
EVERY YOU EVERY ME
PLASTICINE
TEENAGE ANGST
HOLOCAUST
COMMERCIAL FOR LEVI
PEEPING TOM
CENTREFOLDS
SLAVE TO THE WAGE

๐Ÿ’ฌ Yes, maybe we're too close to them for a cover to be relevant. If we covered PJ Harvey, it would sound like Placebo. In concert, we sometimes cover one song or another from the Cure (especially from their Pornography period). Similarly, Brian occasionally covers Janis Joplin's Mercedes Benz as an encore, on his own, a cappella. But putting it on record, I don't know... I wonder if it's not better to reserve that for the emotion of the moment, the ephemerality of a concert...

I must make amends,
Worked hard all my lifetime,
No help from my friends,
So Lord,
Won't you buy me a Mercedes Benz?

Oh Lord,
Won't you buy me a color TV?
Dialing For Dollars is trying to find me.
I wait for delivery
Each day until three,
So oh Lord,
Won't you buy me a color TV?

Oh Lord,
Won't you buy me a night on the town?
I'm counting on you, Lord,
Please don't let me down.
Prove that you love me
And buy the next round,
Oh Lord,
Won't you buy me a night on the town?

Everybody!

Oh Lord,
