๐น Janis Joplin was born in Texas and hitchhiked to San Francisco where she began her career. She drew her inspiration from the blues. She was probably one of the first female artists to leave her mark on the history of rock. She indulged in all kinds of excesses before her tragic end.
๐น Janis is one of those icons of 70s rock who, despite a short but dazzling career, will leave a lasting mark on music.

๐น For the story, at 5 o'clock in the afternoon, the band decided to do the show anyway and borrowed ๐ฑ๐๐๐ ๐ฏ๐๐๐๐ (of Eagles of Death Metal) for his drum kit and the venue (House of Blues) for its piano. The band played an acoustic set of about 70 minutes during which they also played Jackie and Hurt by Nine Inch Nails. Brian has always claimed his admiration for Janis Joplin with an atypical voice.

๐น The anecdote was shared on Placebo's official website on January 9 ,2004:
" ๐ท๐ณ๐จ๐ช๐ฌ๐ฉ๐ถ ๐ฎ๐ถ ๐จ๐ช๐ถ๐ผ๐บ๐ป๐ฐ๐ช!
After a whirlwind tour of Mexico last week, where the band played a club show to over 4,000 people in Guadalajara and then went on to headline a football stadium in Mexico City in front of 35,000 people, they returned to the USA on Monday December 1, only to have their equipment held up by customs.
This left the band in a tricky situation, as they had a sold-out show that evening in Anaheim, California, nearly 7 hours from where the equipment was being held! At 5pm the band decided that 'the show must go on', equipment or no equipment. So borrowing Josh Homme's (from Eagles of Death Metal) drumkit and the venue's, House of Blues, piano, the band set about designing a new acoustic set for that evenings show.
The show still lasted nearly 70 minutes, which also included much banter about the days events with the audience. The set list for the evening was as follows:
SPECIAL K
THIS PICTURE
EVERY YOU EVERY ME
PLASTICINE
TEENAGE ANGST
HOLOCAUST
COMMERCIAL FOR LEVI
PEEPING TOM
CENTREFOLDS
SLAVE TO THE WAGE
HURT
MERCEDES BENZ
JACKIE"

๐ฌ Yes, maybe we're too close to them for a cover to be relevant. If we covered PJ Harvey, it would sound like Placebo. In concert, we sometimes cover one song or another from the Cure (especially from their Pornography period). Similarly, Brian occasionally covers Janis Joplin's Mercedes Benz as an encore, on his own, a cappella. But putting it on record, I don't know... I wonder if it's not better to reserve that for the emotion of the moment, the ephemerality of a concert...

Oh Lord,
Won't you buy me a Mercedes Benz?
My friends all drive Porsches,
I must make amends,
Worked hard all my lifetime,
No help from my friends,
So Lord,
Won't you buy me a Mercedes Benz?
Oh Lord,
Won't you buy me a color TV?
Dialing For Dollars is trying to find me.
I wait for delivery
Each day until three,
So oh Lord,
Won't you buy me a color TV?
Oh Lord,
Won't you buy me a night on the town?
I'm counting on you, Lord,
Please don't let me down.
Prove that you love me
And buy the next round,
Oh Lord,
Won't you buy me a night on the town?
Everybody!
Oh Lord,
Won't you buy me a Mercedes Benz?
My friends all drive Porsches,
I must make amends,
Worked hard all my lifetime,
No help from my friends,
So oh Lord,
Won't you buy me a Mercedes Benz?

๐น Personally, I can imagine Brian singing Summertime. Like Janis, he has an incredible ability to communicate emotion through his singing and he is no match for Janis. They both have exceptional voices.
