PJ Harvey massively impressed Brian when he did his first steps in music and stayed one of his favourite artists forever.
๐Ÿ“ข๐๐ซ๐ข๐š๐ง: "Music is about expressing things you can’t in everyday life. A lot of what has pushed me forward is desire and I have expressed that in my songwriting – perhaps because it’s safer! I’ve always found music that is carnal very attractive but not in the most obvious way. [...] A lot of Polly Harvey’s early work was tapped into a sense of yearning and desire which I understood.”

⭐️๐๐Ž๐‹๐‹๐˜ ๐‰๐„๐€๐ ๐‡๐€๐‘๐•๐„๐˜ is a British singer-songwriter and guitarist whose mythically pitched, fanatically intense recordings and concerts set new standards for women in rock.
Primarily known as a vocalist and guitarist, PJ Harvey is also proficient with a wide range of instruments. She possesses an expansive contralto vocal range.
✨Born on October 9th, 1969, in Bridport, Dorset, Harvey began her career in 1988 when she joined local band ๐‘จ๐’–๐’•๐’๐’Ž๐’‚๐’•๐’Š๐’„ ๐‘ซ๐’๐’‚๐’Ž๐’Š๐’๐’Š as a vocalist, guitarist and saxophonist. In 1991, she formed an eponymous trio called PJ Harvey that released two studio albums called ๐‘ซ๐’“๐’š (1992) and ๐‘น๐’Š๐’… ๐’๐’‡ ๐‘ด๐’† (1993). Since 1995, Harvey has released seven studio albums as solo artist and did a significant number of collaborations with various musicians such as

✨In both 2001 and 2011, PJ Harvey received ๐Œ๐ž๐ซ๐œ๐ฎ๐ซ๐ฒ ๐๐ซ๐ข๐ณ๐ž for ๐‘บ๐’•๐’๐’“๐’Š๐’†๐’” ๐’‡๐’“๐’๐’Ž ๐’•๐’‰๐’† ๐‘ช๐’Š๐’•๐’š, ๐‘บ๐’•๐’๐’“๐’Š๐’†๐’” ๐’‡๐’“๐’๐’Ž ๐’•๐’‰๐’† ๐‘บ๐’†๐’‚ (2000) and ๐‘ณ๐’†๐’• ๐‘ฌ๐’๐’ˆ๐’๐’‚๐’๐’… ๐‘บ๐’‰๐’‚๐’Œ๐’† (2011), that made her the only artist to have been awarded the prize twice. Not everyone’s cup of tea, Polly suggests she is often grossly misunderstood:

✨Outside her better-known music career, Harvey is also an occasional artist and actress. In 1998, she appeared in Hal Hartley's film ๐“๐ก๐ž ๐๐จ๐จ๐ค ๐จ๐Ÿ ๐‹๐ข๐Ÿ๐ž as Magdalena—a modern-day character based on the Biblical Mary Magdalene—and had a cameo role as a Playboy Bunny in ๐€ ๐๐ฎ๐ง๐ง๐ฒ ๐†๐ข๐ซ๐ฅ'๐ฌ ๐“๐š๐ฅ๐ž, a short film directed by Sarah Miles, in which she also performs "Nina in Ecstasy". ✨Harvey is also an accomplished ๐’”๐’„๐’–๐’๐’‘๐’•๐’๐’“ who has had several pieces exhibited at the Lamont Gallery and the Bridport Arts Centre.
✨In October 2015, Harvey published her first collection of poetry entitled ๐‘ป๐’‰๐’† ๐‘ฏ๐’๐’๐’๐’๐’˜ ๐’๐’‡ ๐‘ป๐’‰๐’† ๐‘ฏ๐’‚๐’๐’…. In April 2022, she presented a book-length narrative poem titled ๐‘ถ๐’“๐’๐’‚๐’Ž.

๐‘ฉ๐’“๐’Š๐’‚๐’ often mentioned how PJ Harvey influenced his songwriting.

The story how ”๐“๐–๐„๐๐“๐˜ ๐˜๐„๐€๐‘๐’” came into being is quite interesting. Actually the song is kind of a collaboration of Brian and Paul Campion who was the singer of Glasgow indie rock band AC Acoustics . Both were friends and had already released the song “Crush” with Paul's band in 2000.
Before that he had helped Brian with the lyrics of ”Every you Every me” when “Molks” had a writer's block. And whenever they worked on it together Campion played a specific guitar riff and sang the line ”There are twenty years to go.”
Brian once said that he had always thought it would be an amazing AC Acoustic song but Paul never wrote more than the mentioned part of the music and text. “We all grew to fall in love with that record and always said that one day we were gonna flesh this out in to, you know, a proper song”, he explained in an interview and added that he often played this riff when he picked up a guitar.
In the beginning of 2004 the band seriously started thinking about recording the song and around July the work was finished.

“Twenty years” was finally released on October 18th 2004 and reached no. 18 in the UK Singles Chart. The song was produced and mixed by Phil Vinall who had already worked on some other of Placebo's early chart successes like “Nancy Boy”. The programming was done by Phelan Kane who had also worked with the band before, namely on “Pure morning”. Apart from the release as single “Twenty years“ also appears on the best-of compilation “Once more with feeling”.

According to Brian ”Twenty years” is ”pure epic melancholy, a reflection on the passage of time and mortality. But it's not necessarily a sad song" (Delabel, 2004).
When it came out he was very proud of it. In an interview that took place one day after the release he said that it’s "possibly our best work so far! Y’know it’s really, really cool in that way…" (see quotes below).

The ๐Ÿ”ธ๐—Ÿ๐—œ๐—ฉ๐—˜ ๐—›๐—œ๐—ฆ๐—ง๐—ข๐—ฅ๐—ฌ๐Ÿ”ธ of the “Twenty years“ started on September 29th 2004 at MTV Designerama show in Berlin, Germany. It became one of the fans favourites at Placebo concerts and was part of the setlist until 2009, then reappeared on stage during the “Loud like love“ tour in 2013. From that point on it was played live every year without pause until 2018. The last performance took place at Sion Sous Les รˆtoiles festival in Switzerland on July 13th that year.
When played live the song often has an extra middle eight section added on, complete with heavy experimental guitar. Since 2009 live shows feature an arrangement of the song that was first performed during the Angkor Wat concert in Cambodia.

Up to now “Twenty years“ was played live 361 times. The shared version was recorded at Vieilles Charrues festival in France on July 21st 2006. The setlist consisted of 18 songs, and “Twenty years” was the last encore.

Like ‘don’t go home and listen to the Stryper record, you know, because it’s kind of a waste of time.’ (laugh) Enjoy what you have in front of you.”

๐Ÿ“ข “‘Twenty Years’ is classic Placebo melancholy, it’s quite epic, all about the passing of time.”
(XFM.co.uk, September 2004)

๐Ÿ“ข "One of my best friends in the world is Paul Campion who was the singer of AC Acoustics and who helped me out on the lyrics when I had writers block for 'Every you Every' me on the second album. I always thought it would be an amazing AC Acoustic song but he never wrote it, and since he was such a good friend of mine, often when I’d pick up a guitar, to remind myself of him I’d play that riff and we all grew to fall in love with that record and always said that one day we were gonna flesh this out in to, you know, a proper song. It wasn’t until about six months ago that we actually started thinking about doing that, and three months ago since we actually did it… and it’s possibly our best work so far! Two different versions of the single were put out. One of them includes the radio edit of “First day“ and an extendend version, the other one consists of six remixes plus the video clip.
The song also appears on the album “Pictures“ which was released in June 2005. Apart from “First day“ you can find two other songs featuring Brian on this record, namely “Like siamese“ and “Pictures“.

“First day“ was written by Brian, Jokate, Timo Maas and Martin Buttrich, the two last-named were the producers of the single. Martin is an all-rounder when it comes to playing instruments, he did the bass, guitar, drums and also keybords on the track.

๐Ÿ“ข "We were coming to the end of the summer and Martin and me were kind of stuck. We'd finished the instrumentals and were looking for our dream collaborators but they weren't easy to get. Then we sent something to Brian and he was totally up for it, came over to Hannover and recorded two of the three tracks in a day, then we met up in London to do the third. It was great to work with him, to get into his world – we had a fantastic time."

๐ŸŽ™️Maybe it's inevitable that a Placebo album will sound like something other than Placebo, but we really tried to approach it from a different angle. In several ways. For example, for the first time in our career we started the record without a drummer. It was just me and Brian (Molko) in my studio. Instead of seeing that as an obstacle, we realized that we had more freedom when we were looking for new lands. We started the album thinking we would do everything with a drum machine. In the end it wasn't like that, but it was how we started. We also started the album by doing the process backwards. I mean, when we make a record, the last thing we usually decide is the cover, the title of the record, the song titles... but this time we started with that. So the process has included several things that have been different from how we had done them before. I think we did it that way for us, to avoid feeling like we were doing the same thing as before. But you, for example, say that the result sounds a lot like Placebo. And sure, I think in the end it's inevitable because it's Brian and I, and that's the band and the sound. We're the two musicians and the two songwriters on the project, and ultimately we have an instinctive and emotional relationship with what we're doing: that's Placebo.

๐ŸŽ™️We wanted to count on someone to help us in the studio. When we had all the songs we called our producer Adam Noble, who also produced what until now was our last album, 'Loud Like Love' (Virgin, 13), as well as a couple of songs between these two albums. That sound that you say the album has has a lot to do with Adam, with how he has mixed us, the sound of the voice... There we have a relationship that works very well for us. It's a collaboration that helps us a lot to get what we want out of each song. On this record Brian and I wanted to do something with many layers, and there's something like a love relationship with the keyboards... there's a lot of them. A good example is the first single we released, "Beautiful James", which is featured by a synth melody and we've never done that before, for example. There are synths from all eras and I believe that, in parallel with the fact that we're a rock band, that favors the sound of the album. In the end we not only use a drum machine on the album, but there are also acoustic drums and we are also a guitar band and there are a lot of guitars on the album. Still, it's probably not even our most layered record.

๐ŸŽ™Uffff (laughs)... Hummm... that depends on the day (laughs). Every day I find it more difficult to be optimistic, to be honest. Sure, of course the album includes, in the background, all that is happening around us. And as people we are not young either. We are no longer in our twenties and we don't think that everything we do is the best thing in the world, nor do we think that we will never die. We are not at that stage. I believe the themes a little bit more difficult, the complicated and dark ones, have always been a side of Placebo. And on this album there are still a lot of those themes. But at the same time we have never tried to be a band that wanted to tell the listener what to feel or what to think. So far I've met a lot of people who have taken parts of lyrics and given them positive energy and optimism. So, even though there's darkness, we always have to keep going. And I think that's what we're doing in Placebo: after all this period of time, we're moving on.

๐ŸŽ™️Well, the pandemic has helped me by giving me extra time to really get deep into the identity of each song. We had more time, me for example here in my studio and Brian on his part with the lyrics, and we've been able to fulfill an album with which to be more satisfied. That doesn't mean it's a perfect album, because the songs never stop developing and have a life of their own. But precisely, we realized that perfection was not a goal to achieve (laughs). Sometimes the imperfections are concretized in small sounds or tunings that are not perfect... and you choose to leave those details so that the music can breathe more. I think that with all that extra time we've had, we've been able to fulfill everything more.

๐ŸŽ™️It's interesting the difference between the sounds and concepts of "Beautiful James" and "Surrounded By Spies", being that both have Placebo's identity. And of course technology influences us a lot. Sometimes I think we are living within that technological revolution that is exploding, that one that is developing technology at such a speed that, objectively, the human being cannot realize what is happening.
Is all this that is happening a good thing or a bad thing, or is it a mixture? There are a lot of good things and a lot of bad things, and that also depends on the day. But it's a very different world to the world that existed when we started with the band, and I often say to myself that I live in a city like London, which has almost the most complete security system there is, but I'm lucky enough to live in a street that doesn't have cameras... and I feel better in my street! (laughs) Who is gaining from all this and for what reason? We have to think about the price that goes with the way technology has entered our lives.

๐ŸŽ™️By mentioning that song you reminded me of failures in the process (laughs). Because a lot of times things don't work the way they should work. You turn on a device and it doesn't sound like it used to, and sometimes you don't know why. Or you don't have the login, or things like that. On that track the sound that opens the song was at first a drum machine, but somehow it changed to the sound of a harp and that really caught our attention and we thought it was a much more interesting sound. So we put it on a distortion machine (you know a lot of times the industrial sound comes from distortion, from a signal that's too hot and too saturated), because we've always really liked that kind of sound and our guitars are often distorted. Thus, that harp seemed to us the perfect way to start the album. We also like, speaking of equipment, to put together things that shouldn't be connected in principle (laughs). For example, a pedalboard that goes to a guitar, but instead of putting everything in the right order we put it backwards. Or plugging a keyboard directly into the speaker. That kind of experimentation has always pleased us. I think since the third album we started using the studio more as part of the process of making an album.

๐ŸŽ™️Yes, I think we got to a point where we were a bit disillusioned. It was a good idea to celebrate the 20th anniversary, but what happened is that the 23rd anniversary came and we were still touring (laughs). And that has made us feel a quite disconnected relationship with our previous songs. It's always hard to come up with a setlist that works for us. And it has to work for us first, because otherwise, it's not going to work out right, you know? If it doesn't work for us, it won't work for the public either. And at that time, five years ago or so, I thought I couldn't go on tour without a new record. But here we are now, with a new album and I think it will also be an opportunity to reevaluate the relationship with the previous albums. And maybe with this new album we'll also play songs that we haven't played in a long time, I don't know. It's a bit like you were saying before: a rebirth, a reboot.

There is an expression that I recently heard from an American actor, John Cameron Mitchell, and it is disaster bating and he said that it happens to him a lot. It means you invent catastrophes and disasters in your head. I think that, with this pandemic period, we've had the opportunity to fit Placebo around our lives, rather than fitting a life around Placebo. ๐ŸŽ™️I think it's more difficult now. Being in a band now means you have to spend a lot more time doing other things, like marketing, social media and things like that.
