Today we celebrate the 🎉𝟏𝐬𝐭 𝐚𝐧𝐧𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐚𝐫𝐲🎉 of "𝐁𝐄𝐀𝐔𝐓𝐈𝐅𝐔𝐋 𝐉𝐀𝐌𝐄𝐒", the first single from 𝑷𝒍𝒂𝒄𝒆𝒃𝒐's long awaited eighth album "𝑵𝒆𝒗𝒆𝒓 𝑳𝒆𝒕 𝑴𝒆 𝑮𝒐". How can we forget exactly one year ago that heartwarming feeling of listening to 𝑩𝒓𝒊𝒂𝒏 𝑴𝒐𝒍𝒌𝒐 sing the lines that started this post after five years without new 𝑷𝒍𝒂𝒄𝒆𝒃𝒐 music? It really was like they brought us back to life! ✨😍💘💗✨

However, the day before the song was played for the very first time on 𝑺𝒕𝒆𝒗𝒆 𝑳𝒂𝒎𝒂𝒄𝒒's show on 𝑩𝑩𝑪 𝑹𝒂𝒅𝒊𝒐 𝟔 𝑴𝒖𝒔𝒊𝒄. Two hours earlier on the same radio station, in an interview with 𝑴𝒂𝒕𝒕 𝑬𝒗𝒆𝒓𝒊𝒕𝒕, 𝑩𝒓𝒊𝒂𝒏 told how "𝑩𝒆𝒂𝒖𝒕𝒊𝒇𝒖𝒍 𝑱𝒂𝒎𝒆𝒔" was born:

🎤"Well, like I said it was earlier when I was talking about presenting song titles to songs that hadn't been written, you know. I had this list of song titles and that was one of them, and for some reason it just kind of jumped out of the page at me and, you know, and it made itself known. But it kind of started during a period of major insomnia for me in 2019. I was having this kind of… I mean I have issues with sleep, and I can sort of go through periods where I, for a couple of months, I don't really get more than two or three hours sleep at night. And this was a particularly bad couple of weeks, but in my kind of stupor I was getting kind of… I don't know where from, but melodies and phrases were coming into my head. I was kind of delirious, you know, from lack of sleep and therefore connected to something which I didn't really know what it was, but these things were just coming into my head. And I remember having to sort of get out of bed like five, six times a night even though I wasn't sleeping and just go over to the piano and record a melody onto my phone. And one of those melodies was called “Bad Piano” because I'd recorded it at like 5 in the morning, you know, just to get the notes down. And so, for a long time “Beautiful James” was called ‘Bad Piano” because the initial, the main hook melody was written by me at 5 o'clock in the morning in the middle of a major bout of insomnia. And then, Stefan had to take it and make some sense out of it, and it became the keyboard riff, the main riff of “Beautiful James”. I really want each person who cares enough to listen to the record to find their own story. So, Beautiful James… I fully expect people to ask me all the time ‘Who is Beautiful James? Who is Beautiful James?’ Well, I don't know! Who's your favourite James? James Corden or James Brown - which one do you prefer? Or like, you know, who is James to you? and is James even a man? These are questions I'm not going to answer, these are questions I want people to ask themselves."
▪️𝙱𝚛𝚒𝚊𝚗 𝙼𝚘𝚕𝚔𝚘, 𝙱𝙱𝙲 𝚁𝚊𝚍𝚒𝚘 6 𝙼𝚞𝚜𝚒𝚌, 𝚂𝚎𝚙𝚝𝚎𝚖𝚋𝚎𝚛 𝟷𝟼𝚝𝚑, 𝟸𝟶𝟸𝟷.

⭐ Somehow, it seems to me that the synthesizer's melody evokes the dreamlike delirium that 𝑩𝒓𝒊𝒂𝒏 was going through due to extreme fatigue from not sleeping and that gave birth to this song. 🎶✨

Months later, in the 𝑭𝒓𝒆𝒏𝒄𝒉 magazine 𝑽𝒊𝒏𝒚𝒍𝒆 𝒆𝒕 𝑨𝒖𝒅𝒊𝒐 (#12 May / June 2022), 𝑩𝒓𝒊𝒂𝒏 revealed that "𝑩𝒆𝒂𝒖𝒕𝒊𝒇𝒖𝒍 𝑱𝒂𝒎𝒆𝒔" is "𝒐𝒏𝒆 𝒐𝒇 𝒎𝒚 𝒇𝒂𝒗𝒐𝒖𝒓𝒊𝒕𝒆𝒔 𝒇𝒓𝒐𝒎 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒂𝒍𝒃𝒖𝒎". On the other hand, 𝑺𝒕𝒆𝒇𝒂𝒏 𝑶𝒍𝒔𝒅𝒂𝒍 in other interviews also shared what the process of writing the song was and why it was chosen as the first single from the album.

🎤"It’s kind of hard to tell because it was made out of such a long period of time. We were interrupted as everyone was with what was going on in the world around us. So the process was kind of piece-mail. I think it’s started off very slow on a piano and kind of grew into this pop monster. I think doing many songs on this album we took a different angle than we did before. We like to take kind of a new way with every next album. I remember Brian came in with a picture and said ‘Let’s use this photograph and create the album around it’ and he kept throwing out song titles. Beautiful James, I think it was one of those great titles he had in mind for a while. Sometimes, it’s just through the whole creative process you can see the final effect. And with Beautiful James, it was one of those songs with a very turbulent process of creating. But when we finished it at the studio, it just told us like ‘Hi, I am your first single!’ So, I think that’s why a lot of you reacted to the song same way. As you said, you felt like it was the essence of Placebo, and there’s nothing bad. People react emotionally to our music. We also felt that was right, that was true Placebo, the track was very much us.

🎤𝐌𝐚𝐝𝐬 𝐏𝐞𝐫𝐜𝐡: Thank you! Phil, the art director, saw some work I had done with textured glass before and thought it would be a great fit for the band. So that is really how it all started. The concept was presented to the band and the guys were really into the idea. We spent a whole day in a studio and did a lot of experimentation with different glass, and textures, and colours – all created in a camera. It was a great shoot day and we got a lot of strong images out of it.

On October 18, 2021, 𝑷𝒍𝒂𝒄𝒆𝒃𝒐 invited fans to try out the '𝑩𝒆𝒂𝒖𝒕𝒊𝒇𝒖𝒍 𝑱𝒂𝒎𝒆𝒔 𝑨𝑹 𝑭𝒊𝒍𝒕𝒆𝒓', an Instagram filter that recreated the style of the single's cover with the same green tone and distorted effect as if you were looking through a glass, and asked to tag them on this social network when sharing selfies or reels using the filter. Fans could also send their videos to the band via email. 𝑷𝒍𝒂𝒄𝒆𝒃𝒐 later made an Instagram account to compile some of these fan videos.

📢 I mean, we've been doing it all our adult lives. When we started, Stef was 20 and I was 22. I was already making music before that, on my own. So we've spent almost our whole lives, writing songs for Placebo. We don't really know what else to do. So, yeah, eight years went by between the two albums, but we toured for "Loud Like Love" for two years, then we released our retrospective compilation, we toured with that as well, and it took us a little while to write the new album as well. And then "Bang", pandemic. So everything was postponed for at least two years. It's not like we're coming out of retirement, it's not a comeback. It's just a new album and it's the circumstances that made it that way.


🔸 𝐘𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐧𝐞𝐰 𝐚𝐥𝐛𝐮𝐦 𝐢𝐬 𝐜𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐞𝐝 "𝐍𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐫 𝐋𝐞𝐭 𝐌𝐞 𝐆𝐨". 𝐈𝐬 𝐢𝐭 𝐚𝐝𝐝𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐞𝐝 𝐭𝐨 𝐚𝐧𝐲𝐨𝐧𝐞 𝐢𝐧 𝐩𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐮𝐥𝐚𝐫?
📢 "Never Let Me Go", I think it's a very Placebo title. "Without You I'm Nothing", "A Place For Us To Dream", "Never Let Me Go", it's a very human title and it's inspired by one of my favourite books by Kazuo Ishiguro, it's a book about clones. It's really a book I recommend. That's the inspiration for the title.

📢 Yes, it was convenient but we were also looking for the difference, we were looking for a different process. We found ourselves in our studio, which we built ourselves, the two of us, thinking: "What are we going to do ?" It was a bit like when we started. We didn't have a record deal and we were recording demos on tape in the living room. The only difference is that we have a studio now. So we thought we had almost infinite possibilities here, we could really enjoy ourselves. We just did a tour, we played our hits, we made everyone happy. So let's enjoy ourselves this time. That's the attitude we approached the album with. I think it's important, if you can't make music that you are excited about yourself, how do you want other people to be excited about it? If you don't have an emotional connection, if what you say is not important to you, how can you expect it to be important to others ?


🔸 𝐓𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐧𝐞𝐰 𝐚𝐥𝐛𝐮𝐦 𝐢𝐬 𝐪𝐮𝐢𝐭𝐞 𝐯𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐝 𝐢𝐧 𝐬𝐭𝐲𝐥𝐞𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐦𝐨𝐨𝐝𝐬... 𝐈𝐬𝐧'𝐭 𝐢𝐭 𝐭𝐨𝐨 𝐡𝐚𝐫𝐝 𝐭𝐨 𝐚𝐠𝐫𝐞𝐞 𝐨𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐦𝐮𝐬𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐥 𝐝𝐢𝐫𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐰𝐡𝐞𝐧 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐤 𝐢𝐧 𝐩𝐚𝐢𝐫𝐬?
📢 We really got tired of musical democracy in a band. We've always operated as a democratic state up to now. There was always a battle between us and the drummer. We were fed up with it, so we decided to become intended dictators and it became much easier for us. When it comes to artistic choices, Stef and I almost always agree. So there's a ease. We were really on the same path most of the time. We wanted to take back ownership of our band. and take all the decisions ourselves.

📢 I was afraid of being bored after twenty-seven years of creation if we stayed with our classic methodology. I was afraid it would become repetitive for me, I was afraid I would get bored. So I basically decided to do everything backwards. The last creative decision you make when you've made an album is to choose the cover. So I started with the cover. I showed up at the studio with this picture and said to Stefan:

- 𝐷𝑜 𝑦𝑜𝑢 𝑙𝑖𝑘𝑒 𝑡ℎ𝑖𝑠 𝑝𝑖𝑐𝑡𝑢𝑟𝑒 ?

- 𝑌𝑒𝑎ℎ, 𝑖𝑡'𝑠 𝑐𝑜𝑜𝑙.

- 𝑊𝑜𝑢𝑙𝑑 𝑡ℎ𝑎𝑡 𝑏𝑒 𝑎 𝑔𝑜𝑜𝑑 𝑐𝑜𝑣𝑒𝑟 ?

- 𝑌𝑒𝑎ℎ, 𝑛𝑜𝑡 𝑏𝑎𝑑.

- 𝑂𝑘𝑎𝑦, 𝑠𝑜 𝑡ℎ𝑎𝑡'𝑠 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑐𝑜𝑣𝑒𝑟.

And then I had a list of song titles. Instead of a book full of lyrics, I wrote lists and lists of titles and showed them to Stef. Normally you write the song first and then you decide on the title afterwards. So we started with the titles this time. It was really to break the comfort.

When I worked with David Bowie, his mantra was always:

- 𝐷𝑜 𝑦𝑜𝑢 𝑓𝑒𝑒𝑙 𝑐𝑜𝑚𝑓𝑜𝑟𝑡𝑎𝑏𝑙𝑒 𝑤𝑖𝑡ℎ 𝑤ℎ𝑎𝑡 𝑦𝑜𝑢'𝑟𝑒 𝑑𝑜𝑖𝑛𝑔 𝑛𝑜𝑤 ?

- 𝑊𝑒𝑙𝑙 𝑦𝑒𝑎ℎ 𝐷𝑎𝑣𝑖𝑑.

- 𝑇ℎ𝑒𝑛 𝑦𝑜𝑢'𝑟𝑒 𝑛𝑜𝑡 𝑑𝑜𝑖𝑛𝑔 𝑖𝑡 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑏𝑒𝑠𝑡 𝑤𝑎𝑦.

For David, he always had to feel a little bit uncomfortable, there had to be danger, he had to break things. And that's how he was able to reinvent himself so many times. It takes courage to do that. That's one of the huge things he taught me as a human being. So I wanted to create an environment where there was no comfort, where there was risk and danger all the time. When you create that kind of environment to work in, there are lots of accidents and mistakes, things that you would never have thought of yourself. You create the possibility to surprise yourself, and for me that was important.


🔸 𝐀𝐦𝐨𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐟𝐢𝐫𝐬𝐭 𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐤𝐬 𝐮𝐧𝐯𝐞𝐢𝐥𝐞𝐝 𝐨𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐧𝐞𝐰 𝐚𝐥𝐛𝐮𝐦, 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐜𝐡𝐨𝐬𝐞 "𝐁𝐞𝐚𝐮𝐭𝐢𝐟𝐮𝐥 𝐉𝐚𝐦𝐞𝐬", 𝐰𝐡𝐲 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐤?
📢 It was obvious, it wasn't really a decision. The singles kind of choose themselves. We knew as soon as we recorded it that it would be the first single.


🔸 𝐈𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐬𝐨𝐧𝐠, 𝐰𝐞 𝐟𝐢𝐧𝐝 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐦𝐞𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐚𝐥𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐝𝐲 𝐚𝐩𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐚𝐜𝐡𝐞𝐝 𝐢𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝟗𝟎𝐬 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐬𝐨𝐧𝐠 "𝐍𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐲 𝐁𝐨𝐲". 𝐀𝐫𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐭𝐰𝐨 𝐬𝐨𝐧𝐠𝐬 𝐫𝐞𝐥𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐝?
📢 Honestly, I never thought about it because I tend not to compare what is new with what is old. I don't really like looking backThis song reminds me more of Van Halen's "Jump". When I was young in the 80s, Van Halen was a rock band that was very well known in the US, but not really known in the rest of the world. When they came back with the album '1984', all the Van Halen fans were incredibly angry because their guitar hero was playing synth. But it was that one song that turned Van Halen from American rock stars into global superstars. And while we were mixing that song, I was thinking that maybe it could be our 'Jump'. I hadn't heard 'Jump' since the 80s. So I went home, downloaded it, listened to it and realised that the synth sound is the same, it was crazy.

📢 There's a lot more mystery to us with synths than there is with guitars, because we've been using them for 25/27 years, putting guitars first, so there's a lot less mystery. We want to learn, to fool around, to find new things, new instruments, to use them in the wrong way to create surprising sounds. It's exciting for us because we don't have the knowledge, so we're still discovering. We're a little bit like teenagers in the studio with these keyboards and synths. We don't know how they work, but that's not a problem. You plug them in and then you fool around and maybe there'll be an accident of tremendous beauty, and that's happened several times on this album.

📢 You have to have the courage to break with what made you most famous. Like David Bowie always did. Just before it gets repetitive, "Boom ! That's it !", you do something new.

And that's also what kills art. It's that repetition, working with a formula. Yeah... And, I get bored easily too, and that's what drives me to find different methodologies. I've really taken it to the extreme with this album, and I think you can hear it.

📢 The Prodigal is the only song I wrote before I started working on this album. I was asked to write a theme for a movie, and the movie was never made. I don't know what happened, but the film doesn't exist. The plot of the film was about a rock band and one of the members died on stage. So I decided to write an optimistic, Buddhist song about death. But musically when I wrote it, it was almost a photocopy of 'Where Is My Mind' by the Pixies. When we got into the studio, we wanted to work on that song, but we really wanted to change the sound completely and it was our producer who suggested: "Why don't we do something more like The Beatles' Eleanor Rigby ?" I have two favourite bands, The Beatles and Sonic Youth. So I was very excited about the idea. That's why we ended up in this sonic landscape with all these strings and that's what became The Prodigal.

📢 I'm not sure... After the 60s, music didn't change the world, and in the 70s, neither. I'm not convinced of that. It's a cathartic thing for me. It's a kind of therapy, basically. I externalise the things that consume me, that make me feel bad, that make my life emotionally difficult. I'm not someone who writes songs every day, I write songs in a state of urgency. And it's absolutely necessary that I get them out of myself otherwise they'll consume me, they'll eat me up completely. And I think it's beautiful to be able to communicate with people, to communicate these ideas that are important to me.

🌠 𝑻𝒉𝒊𝒔 𝒘𝒊𝒍𝒍 𝒃𝒆 𝒚𝒐𝒖𝒓 𝒇𝒊𝒓𝒔𝒕 𝒕𝒊𝒎𝒆 𝒘𝒊𝒕𝒉 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒃𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝒔𝒊𝒏𝒄𝒆 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝟐𝟎𝒕𝒉 𝑨𝒏𝒏𝒊𝒗𝒆𝒓𝒔𝒂𝒓𝒚 𝑻𝒐𝒖𝒓 𝒊𝒏 𝟐𝟎𝟏𝟕.
🎤 That tour seemed like an eternity to me. As a result, I personally started to become disillusioned with the name and existence of Placebo, and I feel like I had no idea what we were trying to do here. I felt like we were on an endless commercial journey, that our souls were being destroyed and the band was bearing the brunt of the negative effects. So it took a lot of effort and time to think about starting all over again.


🌠 𝑫𝒊𝒅 𝒚𝒐𝒖 𝒆𝒗𝒆𝒓 𝒕𝒉𝒊𝒏𝒌 𝒂𝒃𝒐𝒖𝒕 𝒒𝒖𝒊𝒕𝒕𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒃𝒂𝒏𝒅?
🎤 It felt like I lost the band in my head. I thought there was no other way for me to survive, and it was the first time I felt so extreme. However, I think I was able to start walking again relying on the feeling that there was about 1% left in the cup to move forward a bit.


🌠 𝑨𝒏𝒅 𝒏𝒐𝒘 𝒚𝒐𝒖 𝒉𝒂𝒗𝒆 𝒇𝒊𝒏𝒊𝒔𝒉𝒆𝒅 "𝑵𝑬𝑽𝑬𝑹 𝑳𝑬𝑻 𝑴𝑬 𝑮𝑶," 𝒚𝒐𝒖𝒓 𝒇𝒊𝒓𝒔𝒕 𝒂𝒍𝒃𝒖𝒎 𝒊𝒏 𝒂𝒃𝒐𝒖𝒕 𝒏𝒊𝒏𝒆 𝒚𝒆𝒂𝒓𝒔.
🎤 I think the fact that it has been quite a few years since our last album means that it took us a while to make the record we really wanted to make. Now we have some beautiful songs that we can show off on tour, and we feel like we're in a good shape.


🌠 𝑾𝒉𝒂𝒕 𝒘𝒂𝒔 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒊𝒎𝒑𝒆𝒕𝒖𝒔 𝒇𝒐𝒓 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒂𝒍𝒃𝒖𝒎?
🎤 Having spent more than half of my life in Placebo, I feel like it has been deeply engraved in my DNA and that's what drives me. So when we talked about making a new album, I couldn't say no because of my love for Brian and the band, my love for the fans, and my love for what we have accomplished, even though the past tours have been painful in many ways. Sometimes I was overwhelmed by Brian's enthusiasm during production, but I couldn't have done any of it without him, and I think I'm here because he was there.


🌠 𝑰 𝒕𝒉𝒊𝒏𝒌 𝒕𝒉𝒆𝒓𝒆 𝒘𝒂𝒔 𝒂 𝒑𝒂𝒏𝒅𝒆𝒎𝒊𝒄 𝒊𝒏𝒇𝒍𝒖𝒆𝒏𝒄𝒆 𝒅𝒖𝒓𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒂𝒍𝒃𝒖𝒎 𝒑𝒓𝒐𝒅𝒖𝒄𝒕𝒊𝒐𝒏 𝒑𝒆𝒓𝒊𝒐𝒅.
🎤 In terms of album production, I think this pandemic was an advantage. It was frustrating at times, but it gave me and Brian time to digest what we did, come up with individual ideas, bring them back and develop them lyrically and musically.


🌠 𝑯𝒐𝒘 𝒅𝒐𝒆𝒔 𝒚𝒐𝒖𝒓 𝒘𝒐𝒓𝒌 𝒅𝒊𝒇𝒇𝒆𝒓 𝒇𝒓𝒐𝒎 𝒚𝒐𝒖𝒓 𝒑𝒓𝒆𝒗𝒊𝒐𝒖𝒔 𝒘𝒐𝒓𝒌?
🎤 From a technical standpoint, I think we've allowed more spaces in the sound than on any of our previous records. Before, it was like, 'I gotta fill in here, I gotta fill in here. Where's the drum beat? Where's the bass?' But then I remembered that the music also needs silence. Silence is there to create anticipation. It took some courage to do that, because I've been making records with a lot of sound so far. But this time, I've evolved as a musician by doing that, and I want to add more nuances from now on.

It was the first song we worked on for the album, and it starts out as a weird drum loop I had on my tablet, but I had a lot of trouble finishing it. It's a song with a lot of emotion and it's a great way to start off the album.

🎤 Strings have been an essential instrument in our work since our fifth album. Adam Noble (who has worked with Paul McCartney, Liam Gallagher, etc.), who produced the song, and I finished it while talking about The Beatles. I can't speak to the world of this song, but the strings definitely add to its beauty.

I feel like I was able to build a sound that is a mix of tension and chaos, while interweaving high-speed beats that sound like drum'n'bass. But the piano tone that resonates at the end makes the song land on something beautiful.

🎤 I think it might have an otherworldly feel to it. In fact, it's a kind of desolation, or post-apocalyptic, or what happened to life, ...... yes, exactly what happened to life, and just looking at the ocean, again, it's also a place to dream. But if you look closely, the small stones are pieces of artificial glass, rounded and smooth from being washed ashore so many times. In short, they represent a kind of memory of what mankind has scattered on this planet. This image is very beautiful and evocative, and I think it's enough to encapsulate the album.

🎤 I opened my mouth a little more this time. I mean, I'm singing more on this album than I ever have and I'm more confident. Brian also praised me, 'You're like Martin Gore to Depeche Mode's Dave Gahan. I don't think I'm that good, but I really enjoyed singing on this album.


🌠 𝑨𝒓𝒆 𝒚𝒐𝒖 𝒓𝒆𝒂𝒅𝒚 𝒕𝒐 𝒕𝒐𝒖𝒓 𝒘𝒊𝒕𝒉 𝒕𝒉𝒊𝒔 𝒂𝒍𝒃𝒖𝒎?
🎤 I'm ready to tour with this album… Self-confidence comes from being a band and feeling good about the sounds you make. I don't think we would have been able to go on the next tour if we hadn't made this album. Playing live has been an integral part of my life since I met Brian when I was 19 years old. I love this band so much and it would be a mistake to just release an album and not tour. On the upcoming tour, I think people will be able to enjoy the charm of the album from multiple angles.


🌠 𝑾𝒉𝒂𝒕'𝒔 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒔𝒆𝒄𝒓𝒆𝒕 𝒕𝒐 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒃𝒂𝒏𝒅'𝒔 𝒄𝒐𝒏𝒕𝒊𝒏𝒖𝒆𝒅 𝒄𝒂𝒓𝒆𝒆𝒓 𝒕𝒐 𝒕𝒉𝒊𝒔 𝒑𝒐𝒊𝒏𝒕?
🎤 I think it's integrity. We've had our lives threatened at times for standing up for what we believe in, but we've been able to write our truth in everything we've ever released so far. I feel like that sincerity is what keeps us going.

🎤 The love I get from the band's core fans is very important to me now. Our daily lives are simple and not very revealing, but we want to provide everyone with the best possible images, photos, and artwork we can.

Formed in 1994 in the 𝑼𝑲 by 𝑩𝒓𝒊𝒂𝒏 𝑴𝒐𝒍𝒌𝒐 and 𝑺𝒕𝒆𝒇𝒂𝒏 𝑶𝒍𝒔𝒅𝒂𝒍, 𝑷𝒍𝒂𝒄𝒆𝒃𝒐 released their debut album "𝑷𝒍𝒂𝒄𝒆𝒃𝒐" in 1996, which reached #5 in the 𝑼𝑲 charts, and since then many hits have been released. So far, they have successfully performed twice in 𝑱𝒂𝒑𝒂𝒏, and will embark on a world tour from May 2022.

🌊 It's been a decade since 𝑷𝒍𝒂𝒄𝒆𝒃𝒐 last released an album, but the long wait is over. The band is finally back with a magnificent record, which flirts as much with the roughness of stoner as with the benevolence of pop, even if the general theme is the end of our world.


🌊 𝑷𝒍𝒂𝒄𝒆𝒃𝒐's new work is entitled 𝑵𝒆𝒗𝒆𝒓 𝑳𝒆𝒕 𝑴𝒆 𝑮𝒐, and is addressed directly to planet Earth. Several songs deal with the end of the world. Not because of an atomic war, that would almost be topical, but because of the appalling treatment we have been giving it for years. It is the subject of the third single 𝑻𝒓𝒚 𝑩𝒆𝒕𝒕𝒆𝒓 𝑵𝒆𝒙𝒕 𝑻𝒊𝒎𝒆, a track with a deliberate tempo and an obsessive chorus, but also and above all the theme of the enigmatic cover. An image with no other life than the ebb and flow of the tides...

🌊 So this is what the end of the world might look like, a still life, frozen for eternity in its pictorial beauty. “𝐼𝑡'𝑠 𝑎 𝑝𝑙𝑎𝑐𝑒 𝑡ℎ𝑎𝑡 𝑟𝑒𝑎𝑙𝑙𝑦 𝑒𝑥𝑖𝑠𝑡𝑠," 𝑩𝒓𝒊𝒂𝒏 𝑴𝒐𝒍𝒌𝒐 tells us. 🌊 Many fans will no doubt have in mind the third 𝑮𝒐𝒓𝒊𝒍𝒍𝒂𝒛 album, 𝑷𝒍𝒂𝒔𝒕𝒊𝒄 𝑩𝒆𝒂𝒄𝒉, which dealt with a very close reality, that of the plastic that invades our coasts and is washed up by the ocean. Yet this is only the tip of the iceberg. Another song on this new 𝑷𝒍𝒂𝒄𝒆𝒃𝒐 album perfectly illustrates the negative irreversibility of man's hand on his environment, 𝑭𝒐𝒓𝒆𝒗𝒆𝒓 𝑪𝒉𝒆𝒎𝒊𝒄𝒂𝒍𝒔. 🌊 PFAS are the result of modern industry. This has contaminated the water, the soil, but also our metabolisms and those of animals. Every day, newborns have tiny chemical residues in them from their parents, the first victims. There is a documentary called 𝑻𝒉𝒆 𝑫𝒆𝒗𝒊𝒍 𝑾𝒆 𝑲𝒏𝒐𝒘 𝒃𝒚 𝑺𝒕𝒆𝒑𝒉𝒂𝒏𝒊𝒆 𝑺𝒐𝒆𝒄𝒉𝒕𝒊𝒈 which tells of the dangers of Teflon, and which questions the potential responsibility of the du Pont de Nemours group. 🥬 𝐏𝐥𝐚𝐜𝐞𝐛𝐨 𝐧𝐨𝐰 𝐚 𝐝𝐮𝐨 🥬

🌊 If 𝑷𝒍𝒂𝒄𝒆𝒃𝒐 hadn't recorded anything for a long time - their last album 𝑳𝒐𝒖𝒅 𝑳𝒊𝒌𝒆 𝑳𝒐𝒗𝒆 dates back to September 2013 - it's also because the last tour had exhausted the troops. Many countries, many festivals, something like 150 dates spread over two years, but above all performances that were increasingly dehumanised. Chronicle of a death foretold, the band saw no point in an immediate sequel, everything came to a gradual halt in 2018. The trio became a duo.


🌊 The months passed and so did the years, the truce imposed by the pandemic and the lockdown had taken everyone by surprise. But 𝑩𝒓𝒊𝒂𝒏 𝑴𝒐𝒍𝒌𝒐 couldn't celebrate his 50th birthday alone in front of his TV screen with a lunch tray, so he started the machine again, slowly but firmly. 🌊 To bounce back, you have to hit rock bottom. 𝑩𝒓𝒊𝒂𝒏 𝑴𝒐𝒍𝒌𝒐 and 𝑺𝒕𝒆𝒇𝒂𝒏 𝑶𝒍𝒔𝒅𝒂𝒍, his lifelong partner, were in the studio. They no longer needed a drummer, a position that was always a bit shaky for them, drum machines and occasional volunteers would do. It was like a return to the early days, when they both found themselves locked in a studio trying to combine their talents for the first time. At the American International High School in Luxembourg, they didn't hang out. However, from that day in 1994 when they met on the London underground, an instant complicity took place. They never left each other's side.


🌊 The first songs quickly appeared and also simply found a large following. But a quarter of a century later, they don't really know how to approach a follow-up. Then a simple but strange idea came up. Why not approach the new album from the end ? First think of the packaging, the cover, then improvise the content, the songs...


🌊 It's a risky business, but it works. 🌊 𝑩𝒓𝒊𝒂𝒏 𝑴𝒐𝒍𝒌𝒐's record deals with heavy themes that instinctively come up in conversation: the ecological disaster, the evils of the internet, the bottomless pits of instagram narcissism, and the deep disappointment that humanity has become. Early in their career, the songs were about the emotions of adolescence and were therefore very introspective. The band had not yet found its place in this world and was looking for ways to occupy it. Today, they have woken up and are finally willing to share their anxieties, as the closing track 𝑭𝒊𝒙 𝒀𝒐𝒖𝒓𝒔𝒆𝒍𝒇 seems to indicate. Alas, the disillusionment is huge, and the fight to be waged is colossal.


🌊 It is a harsh and dark awakening, after years of various slumbers, and an anesthesia induced by easy fortune. 𝑷𝒍𝒂𝒄𝒆𝒃𝒐 has sold around thirteen million albums. But 𝑷𝒍𝒂𝒄𝒆𝒃𝒐 didn't want to repeat a recipe, they prefer to question everything. This fits in well with their original premise, acting differently has given a new relief to their music, particularly successful and lively on this record. And so much the worse if the 6 strings have become here a melodic support to the synthesizers rather than a conductor of the orchestra, because it is particularly vivifying.

But if at the time a reproachful look was cast on this fashion which consisted in claiming to be gay, from now on, it is just the story of a romance outside the heteronormative limits. A fragile ballad because it carries a certain melancholy, it is above all timeless because 𝑩𝒓𝒊𝒂𝒏's voice is particularly ageless. The passage of time has no effect on his voice, which is as nasal and deep as ever, but above all melodious and caressing.

⭐ The starting point was in 2016, when we made the decision to do this retrospective tour. We thought: "We have to be careful because we have quite a dysfunctional relationship with our old songs". So we decided to start writing stuff during the breaks of this tour to keep feeling like artists.

⭐ This process of renewal, of looking for something new, is imperative for me, I really don't want to be bored with Placebo. You have to really push yourself to find different methods, challenging situations, things to say that you find important, to basically do something that feeds you, because without that self-feeding, why would you do that ? I would ask myself that question all the time. What am I doing here ? If I don't believe in it, if I don't have something that I have a strong emotional connection with, a belief.

⭐ I write in moments of urgency. I have something consuming me from the inside. If I don't externalize it, it will continue to consume me. These are often emotions that are problematic, difficult, sad, angry, frustrated.

⭐ I'm lucky enough to be able to go through a fairly cathartic process, it's almost a form of therapy and the positive thing is that it touches people, emotionally. There is this human connection. We shouldn't be too at ease in everything we do, that was one of the mantras of my dear friend David Bowie, who is no longer with us: "If you're comfortable, then you're not doing it right". That's what he used to say to me all the time.

⭐ I would say he influenced me more as a human being than a musician. I learned a lot from touring with him at the beginning of my career, about what it is to be a rock star and how to do it and the methods he used. But it was more the way he was with people that I learned the most from. He treated everyone with the same dignity and kindness. I would say he taught me to be a better human being. But I was too young, too arrogant, too naive and too drunk to realise it when I was there with him. It was only when he left us that I really understood the effect he had on me as a human being. These days, it's a little bit like he's still with me. I feel like I still have a relationship with him. It gives me a lot of comfort.

⭐ I don't really consider myself a guitarist. I know how to write a song. I know how to find melodies that are catchy. I would say that with my voice, which fortunately is quite unique, there is a certain excellence. That's perhaps one of my ONLY certainties, I am a good singer.

⭐ It wasn't really a choice, it was essential. We were given a context where we could discover ourselves and be ourselves. We decided to have the courage to present ourselves in the way that was imperative for us. We were given scenes to do this. It was a bit like a process of self-discovery. We realised very quickly that there were a lot of people like us who felt like outsiders and those outsiders became our audience.

It's really not something I think about very much because I think I would become too self conscious. I have no control over how people see me. Why would I worry about that ? Isn't it holier to worry about things you can control ? There's a sentence in English that says: "what other people think of me is not of my business". I really like this idea.

I have a way to express myself and for that I'm incredibly grateful. But I try not to think about it more than that. I'm someone who writes songs and I'm lucky that there are a lot of people who want to listen to them. I have to keep it as simple as that in my head. Otherwise it becomes overwhelming.

⭐ Yes, because when I was 11 years old, I looked at my father and said: "You dress up like that every day and go to the same place every day to sit behind a desk ? Oh no, that's not possible. If I do that, I'll become incredibly depressed." So even at the age of 11, I thought: "I'll have to find something else to do because I don't understand the 'subway, work, sleep'. It's really not for me."

⭐ I went to drama school, but even that wasn't enough for me.

🎙️Maybe it's inevitable that a Placebo album will sound like something other than Placebo, but we really tried to approach it from a different angle. In several ways. For example, for the first time in our career we started the record without a drummer. It was just me and Brian (Molko) in my studio. Instead of seeing that as an obstacle, we realized that we had more freedom when we were looking for new lands. We started the album thinking we would do everything with a drum machine. In the end it wasn't like that, but it was how we started. We also started the album by doing the process backwards. I mean, when we make a record, the last thing we usually decide is the cover, the title of the record, the song titles... but this time we started with that. So the process has included several things that have been different from how we had done them before. I think we did it that way for us, to avoid feeling like we were doing the same thing as before. But you, for example, say that the result sounds a lot like Placebo. And sure, I think in the end it's inevitable because it's Brian and I, and that's the band and the sound. We're the two musicians and the two songwriters on the project, and ultimately we have an instinctive and emotional relationship with what we're doing: that's Placebo.

🎙️We wanted to count on someone to help us in the studio. When we had all the songs we called our producer Adam Noble, who also produced what until now was our last album, 'Loud Like Love' (Virgin, 13), as well as a couple of songs between these two albums. That sound that you say the album has has a lot to do with Adam, with how he has mixed us, the sound of the voice... There we have a relationship that works very well for us. It's a collaboration that helps us a lot to get what we want out of each song. On this record Brian and I wanted to do something with many layers, and there's something like a love relationship with the keyboards... there's a lot of them. A good example is the first single we released, "Beautiful James", which is featured by a synth melody and we've never done that before, for example. There are synths from all eras and I believe that, in parallel with the fact that we're a rock band, that favors the sound of the album. In the end we not only use a drum machine on the album, but there are also acoustic drums and we are also a guitar band and there are a lot of guitars on the album. Still, it's probably not even our most layered record.

🎙Uffff (laughs)... Hummm... that depends on the day (laughs). Every day I find it more difficult to be optimistic, to be honest. Sure, of course the album includes, in the background, all that is happening around us. And as people we are not young either. We are no longer in our twenties and we don't think that everything we do is the best thing in the world, nor do we think that we will never die. We are not at that stage. I believe the themes a little bit more difficult, the complicated and dark ones, have always been a side of Placebo. And on this album there are still a lot of those themes. But at the same time we have never tried to be a band that wanted to tell the listener what to feel or what to think. So far I've met a lot of people who have taken parts of lyrics and given them positive energy and optimism. So, even though there's darkness, we always have to keep going. And I think that's what we're doing in Placebo: after all this period of time, we're moving on.

🎙️Well, the pandemic has helped me by giving me extra time to really get deep into the identity of each song. We had more time, me for example here in my studio and Brian on his part with the lyrics, and we've been able to fulfill an album with which to be more satisfied. That doesn't mean it's a perfect album, because the songs never stop developing and have a life of their own. But precisely, we realized that perfection was not a goal to achieve (laughs). Sometimes the imperfections are concretized in small sounds or tunings that are not perfect... and you choose to leave those details so that the music can breathe more. I think that with all that extra time we've had, we've been able to fulfill everything more.

🎙️It's interesting the difference between the sounds and concepts of "Beautiful James" and "Surrounded By Spies", being that both have Placebo's identity. And of course technology influences us a lot. Sometimes I think we are living within that technological revolution that is exploding, that one that is developing technology at such a speed that, objectively, the human being cannot realize what is happening.
Is all this that is happening a good thing or a bad thing, or is it a mixture? There are a lot of good things and a lot of bad things, and that also depends on the day. But it's a very different world to the world that existed when we started with the band, and I often say to myself that I live in a city like London, which has almost the most complete security system there is, but I'm lucky enough to live in a street that doesn't have cameras... and I feel better in my street! (laughs) Who is gaining from all this and for what reason? We have to think about the price that goes with the way technology has entered our lives.

🎙️By mentioning that song you reminded me of failures in the process (laughs). Because a lot of times things don't work the way they should work. You turn on a device and it doesn't sound like it used to, and sometimes you don't know why. Or you don't have the login, or things like that. On that track the sound that opens the song was at first a drum machine, but somehow it changed to the sound of a harp and that really caught our attention and we thought it was a much more interesting sound. So we put it on a distortion machine (you know a lot of times the industrial sound comes from distortion, from a signal that's too hot and too saturated), because we've always really liked that kind of sound and our guitars are often distorted. Thus, that harp seemed to us the perfect way to start the album. We also like, speaking of equipment, to put together things that shouldn't be connected in principle (laughs). For example, a pedalboard that goes to a guitar, but instead of putting everything in the right order we put it backwards. Or plugging a keyboard directly into the speaker. That kind of experimentation has always pleased us. I think since the third album we started using the studio more as part of the process of making an album.

🎙️From the beginning, when I heard some demos he made when he was sixteen years old, I was impressed. Already at that very moment. And of course he has changed, maybe he doesn't reach as high as before, but he manages his voice very well, really (laughs).

🎙️Yes, I think we got to a point where we were a bit disillusioned. It was a good idea to celebrate the 20th anniversary, but what happened is that the 23rd anniversary came and we were still touring (laughs). And that has made us feel a quite disconnected relationship with our previous songs. It's always hard to come up with a setlist that works for us. And it has to work for us first, because otherwise, it's not going to work out right, you know? If it doesn't work for us, it won't work for the public either. And at that time, five years ago or so, I thought I couldn't go on tour without a new record. But here we are now, with a new album and I think it will also be an opportunity to reevaluate the relationship with the previous albums. And maybe with this new album we'll also play songs that we haven't played in a long time, I don't know. It's a bit like you were saying before: a rebirth, a reboot.

🎙️I don't really think about it. I wake up with all the same insecurities I had when I was twenty... still! (laughs). That's right, Now I even think a little more, after so much time without going out. I think too much, I worry too much and when I look in the mirror, I don't see a rock star. There is an expression that I recently heard from an American actor, John Cameron Mitchell, and it is disaster bating and he said that it happens to him a lot. It means you invent catastrophes and disasters in your head. I think that, with this pandemic period, we've had the opportunity to fit Placebo around our lives, rather than fitting a life around Placebo. We've been able to reevaluate a little what it means to be in a band now. But I still look in the mirror and I don't see someone like you have said.

🎙️I think it's more difficult now. Being in a band now means you have to spend a lot more time doing other things, like marketing, social media and things like that. Or creating content outside of music, because you have to fight so hard to draw attention to what you're doing.... You have to spend a lot of time. Either that or try to find other ways to make a living. I see it is much more difficult now than before, to be honest.
