PJ Harvey massively impressed Brian when he did his first steps in music and stayed one of his favourite artists forever.
📢𝐁𝐫𝐢𝐚𝐧: "Music is about expressing things you can’t in everyday life. A lot of what has pushed me forward is desire and I have expressed that in my songwriting – perhaps because it’s safer! I’ve always found music that is carnal very attractive but not in the most obvious way. [...] A lot of Polly Harvey’s early work was tapped into a sense of yearning and desire which I understood.”

⭐️𝐏𝐎𝐋𝐋𝐘 𝐉𝐄𝐀𝐍 𝐇𝐀𝐑𝐕𝐄𝐘 is a British singer-songwriter and guitarist whose mythically pitched, fanatically intense recordings and concerts set new standards for women in rock.
Primarily known as a vocalist and guitarist, PJ Harvey is also proficient with a wide range of instruments. She possesses an expansive contralto vocal range.
✨Born on October 9th, 1969, in Bridport, Dorset, Harvey began her career in 1988 when she joined local band 𝑨𝒖𝒕𝒐𝒎𝒂𝒕𝒊𝒄 𝑫𝒍𝒂𝒎𝒊𝒏𝒊 as a vocalist, guitarist and saxophonist. In 1991, she formed an eponymous trio called PJ Harvey that released two studio albums called 𝑫𝒓𝒚 (1992) and 𝑹𝒊𝒅 𝒐𝒇 𝑴𝒆 (1993). Since 1995, Harvey has released seven studio albums as solo artist and did a significant number of collaborations with various musicians such as 𝑵𝒊𝒄𝒌 𝑪𝒂𝒗𝒆, 𝑻𝒐𝒎 𝒀𝒐𝒓𝒌 (𝑹𝒂𝒅𝒊𝒐𝒉𝒆𝒂𝒅), 𝑩𝒋𝒐̈𝒓𝒌, 𝑱𝒐𝒔𝒉 𝑯𝒐𝒎𝒎𝒆 (𝑸𝒖𝒆𝒆𝒏𝒔 𝑶𝒇 𝑻𝒉𝒆 𝑺𝒕𝒐𝒏𝒆 𝑨𝒈𝒆), 𝑱𝒐𝒉𝒏 𝑷𝒂𝒓𝒊𝒔𝒉 (former member of Automatic Dlamini).

✨In both 2001 and 2011, PJ Harvey received 𝐌𝐞𝐫𝐜𝐮𝐫𝐲 𝐏𝐫𝐢𝐳𝐞 for 𝑺𝒕𝒐𝒓𝒊𝒆𝒔 𝒇𝒓𝒐𝒎 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝑪𝒊𝒕𝒚, 𝑺𝒕𝒐𝒓𝒊𝒆𝒔 𝒇𝒓𝒐𝒎 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝑺𝒆𝒂 (2000) and 𝑳𝒆𝒕 𝑬𝒏𝒈𝒍𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝑺𝒉𝒂𝒌𝒆 (2011), that made her the only artist to have been awarded the prize twice. She has also garnered eight 𝐁𝐫𝐢𝐭 𝐀𝐰𝐚𝐫𝐝 nominations, seven 𝐆𝐫𝐚𝐦𝐦𝐲 𝐀𝐰𝐚𝐫𝐝 nominations, three 𝐑𝐨𝐥𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐒𝐭𝐨𝐧𝐞 accolades. Not everyone’s cup of tea, Polly suggests she is often grossly misunderstood:

✨Outside her better-known music career, Harvey is also an occasional artist and actress. In 1998, she appeared in Hal Hartley's film 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐁𝐨𝐨𝐤 𝐨𝐟 𝐋𝐢𝐟𝐞 as Magdalena—a modern-day character based on the Biblical Mary Magdalene—and had a cameo role as a Playboy Bunny in 𝐀 𝐁𝐮𝐧𝐧𝐲 𝐆𝐢𝐫𝐥'𝐬 𝐓𝐚𝐥𝐞, a short film directed by Sarah Miles, in which she also performs "Nina in Ecstasy". Harvey also collaborated with Miles on another film, 𝐀𝐦𝐚𝐞𝐫𝐮 𝐅𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐨𝐮𝐭 𝟏𝟗𝟕𝟐, which includes Harvey performing a cover of "When Will I See You Again".

✨Harvey is also an accomplished 𝒔𝒄𝒖𝒍𝒑𝒕𝒐𝒓 who has had several pieces exhibited at the Lamont Gallery and the Bridport Arts Centre.
✨In October 2015, Harvey published her first collection of poetry entitled 𝑻𝒉𝒆 𝑯𝒐𝒍𝒍𝒐𝒘 𝒐𝒇 𝑻𝒉𝒆 𝑯𝒂𝒏𝒅. In April 2022, she presented a book-length narrative poem titled 𝑶𝒓𝒍𝒂𝒎.

📢Me, Steve and Bill feel like death warmed up and moan all the way to Sydney. We invite PJ Harvey and her band to come on a Sydney harbour cruise organised by Virgin. They accept and we spend a beautiful evening seeing the sunset behind the Opera house. Fruit bats fly above us and we can see people walk the arch of the Sydney bridge. If I thought the tower in Tokyo was bad, that walk would definitely bring on my heart attack. I can hardly string a sentence together and go to bed. Bri's over the moon as he got a chance to properly talk to Polly and feels there is a connection. Maybe time to ask about a duet? He goes for dinner with Mick Harvey and some of the PJ crew.
The hotel's in Coogee bay just by the beach and the temp is around 35 all week. Inevitable sunburns.

⭐️However, Placebo didn’t wait for this collaboration and covered PJ Harvey’s song 𝐇𝐀𝐑𝐃𝐋𝐘 𝐖𝐀𝐈𝐓. It was used as B-side on their single 𝑻𝒉𝒆 𝑵𝒆𝒗𝒆𝒓-𝑬𝒏𝒅𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝑾𝒉𝒚 released as Limited Edition picture disc (limited to 500 copies) and download in September 2009.

⭐️Brian included Placebo’s rendition of the song into the playlist he prepared for 𝑻𝒉𝒆 𝑹𝒆𝒔𝒊𝒅𝒆𝒏𝒄𝒚, his takeover show on 𝑿𝑭𝑴 𝑹𝒂𝒅𝒊𝒐 in December 2009.

🧬 𝑷𝒍𝒂𝒄𝒆𝒃𝒐'𝒔 𝑫𝑵𝑨... this is a topic that seems obvious at first glance but is rather complex.

🧬 In 2018, 𝑼𝑫𝒊𝒔𝒄𝒐𝒗𝒆𝒓 has tried this exercise of finding the origins of Placebo. There are some very good points, as you can read in this article I'm sharing with you today.

◾ At first glance, the seventies have little in common with the nineties. There the debauched rock'n'roll lifestyle reigned, here the techno optimism of the early internet age. But in the nineties, rock music made a comeback. Grunge put on flannel shirts instead of spandex suits, Britpop dominated Britain. Placebo brought the two together and made the glam of yesteryear coexist with the hodgepodge that threatened to take over the pop world before the end of the second millennium.

◾Placebo frontman Brian Molko never tired of describing his band as outsiders. As phraseological as it sounds, it's true: Placebo's Nancy Boys rebelled against the legginess of the rock world, talked about bisexuality and depression. "We were reacting strongly to the machismo, the fan chants and the revisionism of Britpop," Molko stressed in an interview. "We wanted to make a political statement with the clothes we wore and the make-up we put on. They succeeded: The rock world became a little more queer with the band's success.

◾ Placebo is the name of a fake drug - a pill that doesn't work. But Placebo is also Latin for "𝐼 𝑤𝑖𝑙𝑙 𝑝𝑙𝑒𝑎𝑠𝑒" and that's exactly what Molko, Stefan Osdal and their drummers - Robert Schultzberg, Steve Hewitt and more recently Steve Forrest - did with a sound that served punk as well as pop, that could be wonderfully quiet and deafening. It's a sound that goes straight to the heart and appeals not just to the fringe. To find out who inspired it, you have to look at Placebo's musical DNA.


🟣 𝗖𝗮𝗽𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗻 𝗕𝗲𝗲𝗳𝗵𝗲𝗮𝗿𝘁 & 𝗛𝗶𝘀 𝗠𝗮𝗴𝗶𝗰 𝗕𝗮𝗻𝗱 – 𝗔𝘀𝗵𝘁𝗿𝗮𝘆 𝗛𝗲𝗮𝗿𝘁

◾ Given Placebo's history, it's not surprising that Placebo is an outsider in the rock world. Brian Molko and Stefan Olsdal attended an American school in Luxembourg as teenagers, far from any musical activity. Both hung out in different cliques and never spoke to each other, until they met years later on the London Underground. Molko saw that the skinny Olsdal had a guitar strapped to his back and quickly invited him to play solo.

◾ It was a providential meeting. Totally enthused by Molko's talent, the native Swede insisted on making common cause with the Briton. They borrowed the name of the project from one of the most bizarre outsiders in rock history. "𝐼𝑡 𝑐𝑎𝑚𝑒 𝑓𝑟𝑜𝑚 𝑎 𝐶𝑎𝑝𝑡𝑎𝑖𝑛 𝐵𝑒𝑒𝑓ℎ𝑒𝑎𝑟𝑡 𝑙𝑖𝑛𝑒," Olsdal recalls of the band's first name. "𝑆ℎ𝑒 𝑢𝑠𝑒𝑑 𝑚𝑒 𝑙𝑖𝑘𝑒 𝑎𝑛 𝑎𝑠ℎ𝑡𝑟𝑎𝑦 ℎ𝑒𝑎𝑟𝑡". With Placebo, the two men came up with an even catchier name. "𝑌𝑜𝑢 𝑐𝑎𝑛 𝑖𝑚𝑎𝑔𝑖𝑛𝑒 ℎ𝑜𝑤 40,000 𝑝𝑒𝑜𝑝𝑙𝑒 𝑠ℎ𝑜𝑢𝑡 𝑖𝑡 𝑜𝑢𝑡...", the bassist explains. Ashtray Heart, however, is also the title of a song on the album Battle for the Sun. The lyrics clearly allude to Captain Beefheart and his Magic Band.

◾Outsider or not: with their first album Placebo, the trio - which included Schultzberg alongside Molko and Olsdal - was a real hit. But now the two leaders of the band are not entirely satisfied with their first work. They find much of what got them media attention at the time too pop, too punk, too adolescent. They were compared to the first post-punk generation, when the inspiration was quite different.

◾"𝑊𝑒 𝑡𝑟𝑖𝑒𝑑 𝑡𝑜 𝑡𝑎𝑘𝑒 𝑆𝑜𝑛𝑖𝑐 𝑌𝑜𝑢𝑡ℎ 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝐷𝑒𝑝𝑒𝑐ℎ𝑒 𝑀𝑜𝑑𝑒, 𝑡ℎ𝑟𝑜𝑤 𝑡ℎ𝑒𝑚 𝑎𝑔𝑎𝑖𝑛𝑠𝑡 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑤𝑎𝑙𝑙 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝑠𝑒𝑒 𝑤ℎ𝑎𝑡 𝑤𝑜𝑢𝑙𝑑 𝑠𝑡𝑖𝑐𝑘," Molko recalls in an interview. American no wave here, British new wave there: clearly Placebo had absolutely nothing to do with the galloping Britpop trend, nor did they want to. But they have remained true to Depeche Mode throughout their career. In 2003, they covered the then ten-year-old song I Feel You from Depeche Mode's seminal album Songs of Faith and Devotion.

◾Unlike their Britpop contemporaries, who found their inspiration mainly in the sixties and seventies, Placebo either orientated themselves directly to the pulse of the present, or to the exciting early days of the British indie sound. So it's no surprise that the B-side of their 1997 single Nancy Boy contains a cover of indie heroes The Smiths, Bigmouth Strikes Again. Molko's nasally, decidedly androgynous voice seemed a perfect update to Morrissey's iodised vocal style.


◾Like Britpop after them, the Smiths represented a certain image of British culture with which Placebo could not and would not be associated. But in the romantic gestures of Morrissey's band and guitar genius Johnny Marr, Molko and his pals found something else: style. Few bands embodied musical and lyrical elegance as confidently as the Smiths.

◾Speaking of "Bigmouth": sometimes Molko would have preferred - like Morrissey - to keep his mouth shut. About what ? Well, about his bisexuality, which also became a declaration of war in Nancy Boy. "I've always been open about my sexuality, because I was quite a go-getter in the early days of Placebo," he admits quietly. "My coming-out felt important to take a stand. Looking back a quarter of a century, it's fair to say that Molko did exactly the right thing: Placebo started a small revolution.

◾But they were not alone. Suede established themselves in the late eighties and early nineties with a sound that is considered a precursor to the Britpop movement. ◾Suede and Placebo were far from the only ones to openly embrace their fluid interpretation of male sexuality. Their master mind was David Bowie. Much has been said and written about Bowie's sexuality, not all of it positive: he is said to have had sex with minors, and there are whispers that his concessions to bisexuality were just a publicity stunt. In any case: by bringing a new image of masculinity to the stage and by transforming himself from time to time, he became a role model for entire generations.

◾In 1996, Bowie invited Placebo on a joint tour and even appeared in an alternative version of the title track from their album Without You I'm Nothing. "𝑊𝑒 𝑜𝑤𝑒 𝑖𝑡 𝑎𝑙𝑙 𝑡𝑜 𝑀𝑜𝑟𝑟𝑖𝑠𝑠𝑒𝑦," Molko revealed to the press. Moz played his colleague a demo of the band before Placebo was even released. He was thrilled. This is particularly true of their participation in the film Velvet Goldmine, loosely based on Bowie's life.

◾The band made several guest star appearances in this cult film, and can also be heard on the soundtrack. For Velvet Goldmine, they recorded a cover of T-Rex's 20th Century Boy, Marc Bolan's glam rock classic. Although the garish aesthetic of glam rock is undoubtedly one of Placebo's main influences, the band has never been content with trying to revive this short-lived genre.

◾The Black Market Music album was the first time Placebo had expressed their full potential. Although Molko is upset about the poor production sound of this groundbreaking record, he cannot deny that his band has rarely sounded more coherent. In terms of content, too, Placebo were able for the first time to realise what their mastermind had in mind, weaving dense, lyrical lyrics that had no pubescent charge.

◾In the song Slave to the Wage, for example, Molko describes, over Olsdal's feverish bass riff, the bleak daily reality of a 9 to 5. There is no doubt that as rock stars, a settled working life meant pure hell for the trio - at the time Steve Hewitt was still behind the gun range. ◾It is clear that Placebo has always represented and still represents a certain attitude to life. Outsiders on the one hand, creative and full of energy on the other. No wonder Placebo also loves PJ Harvey. When the band presented a cover of Hardly Wait - first released in 1993 on Harvey's legendary 4-track demo LP - on the B-side of their single The Never-Ending Why in 2009, it was a long-overdue tribute to the fantastic Polly Jean.

◾Molko discovered Harvey early on: when their first album Dry was released in 1992, he was immediately excited. ◾Well, maybe Kate Bush. The latter's hit Running Up That Hill (A Deal With God) is also an integral part of the Placebo repertoire. Their cover was first released as a bonus track on the US version of the Meds album and quickly became a fan favourite. "We cover songs that we love," said Olsdal. "We do it for fun in B-side sessions. We've covered a lot of bands, especially from the eighties. Depeche Mode and even Robert Palmer. Their version of Running Up That Hill, however, was to be very special.

◾"We're huge fans of Kate Bush and when it comes to this song, we think the lyrics have real depth, which is not noticeable in the original because she sings so fast," Olsdal explained of his band's approach. ◾Placebo has always been open to its influences, has dedicated solemn covers to its heroes and heroines and has always shown them respect, even behind the scenes. The same cannot be said for the bands who, for their part, owe a lot to Placebo. "You lose hair", Blackmail singer Aydo Abay is said to have joked to Brian Molko when he met the Briton backstage at the Melt! festival one day. Is this true? We don't know.

◾But what is certain is that the Koblenz band, which debuted a year after Placebo, has always reacted with annoyance to the incessant comparisons with Placebo. "𝐴ℎ, 𝑛𝑜𝑡 𝑡ℎ𝑎𝑡 𝑎𝑔𝑎𝑖𝑛," moaned Carlos Ebelhäuser, the band's bassist, when the conversation turned to Abay's singing in an interview. 🧬 On the other hand, I find that the comparison with glam rock is often overemphasized despite Brian, Stefan and Steve Hewitt's constant reminders (at the time) that this musical genre was never a major influence on their music. I strongly believe that if they had never made an appearance in Velvet Goldmine, the glam image would not have stuck to Placebo so much. I may be wrong, but Placebo would never have covered 20th Cebtury Boy if not for Todd Haynes' film. Of course, David Bowie was one of the main artists to use these glam tendencies and to play them to excess, but this is not what influenced Placebo, as Brian reminded us during an interview in Paris in 1998:

This song has an interesting history.
For the first time, Stefan was not involved in its creation and it was not written for Placebo at all.
The co-writers of this specific one were two friends of Brian, namely 𝐀𝐦𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐧 𝐬𝐢𝐧𝐠𝐞𝐫-𝐬𝐨𝐧𝐠𝐰𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐞𝐫 𝐉𝐨𝐫𝐝𝐚𝐧 𝐏𝐚𝐠𝐞 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐒𝐭𝐞𝐯𝐞 𝐋𝐮𝐝𝐰𝐢𝐧, 𝐚 𝐁𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐬𝐡 𝐩𝐮𝐧𝐤 𝐫𝐨𝐜𝐤𝐞𝐫.

𝐁𝐫𝐢𝐚𝐧: Because… because of this connection to Ashtray Heart etc., we wrote it to sell it to someone. And we wrote it in Nicaragua, so there is Spanish in it ‘Cenicero cenicero mi corazon’. I was the only smoker, and when I was on vacation in Nicaragua I was always asking in every restaurant, in every coffee for ‘cenicero, cenicero’. We had the demo for this song, we listened to it while driving across Nicaragua and that's how the song was written. And this is the first song which is on Placebo album that I didn't write with Stefan.

Let's listen to a bit of punk rock with the noisy "𝐁𝐑𝐈𝐂𝐊 𝐒𝐇𝐈𝐓𝐇𝐎𝐔𝐒𝐄", a track from 𝑷𝒍𝒂𝒄𝒆𝒃𝒐's second album,"𝑾𝒊𝒕𝒉𝒐𝒖𝒕 𝒀𝒐𝒖 𝑰'𝒎 𝑵𝒐𝒕𝒉𝒊𝒏𝒈" (1998). 𝑩𝒓𝒊𝒂𝒏 𝑴𝒐𝒍𝒌𝒐 stated that "𝑩𝒓𝒊𝒄𝒌 𝑺𝒉𝒊𝒕𝒉𝒐𝒖𝒔𝒆" was born during their first tour, more specifically on October 31, 1996 when they visited 𝑳𝒆𝒊𝒑𝒛𝒊𝒈, 𝑮𝒆𝒓𝒎𝒂𝒏𝒚 for the first time:

🎤 "We also had to change "Brick Shithouse" again. The song came over us during a soundcheck in Leipzig, we then reworked it again after the tour."
▪️𝙱𝚛𝚒𝚊𝚗 𝙼𝚘𝚕𝚔𝚘, 𝙳𝚒𝚜𝚌𝚘𝚟𝚎𝚛, 𝟷𝟿𝟿𝟾.


The intro of "𝑩𝒓𝒊𝒄𝒌 𝑺𝒉𝒊𝒕𝒉𝒐𝒖𝒔𝒆" is truly fascinating. It starts with small guitar riffs while 𝑩𝒓𝒊𝒂𝒏's distorted voice is heard through a megaphone and after some bouncing bass lines, the rhythm of the guitars and drums explode in a brutal way, representing the fury, the desperation and the painful feeling when the person you love has found a new lover. But you know that in the 𝑷𝒍𝒂𝒄𝒆𝒃𝒐 world, things are never that simple and to describe those emotions, 𝑩𝒓𝒊𝒂𝒏 approaches this story from a much more interesting perspective:


🎤 "A disembodied soul floats overhead, observing the living. It's a ghost story, about somebody watching their lover make love to the person who killed them."
▪️𝙱𝚛𝚒𝚊𝚗 𝙼𝚘𝚕𝚔𝚘, 𝙿𝙰𝚃, 𝟷𝟿𝟿𝟿.


📍The title comes from the 𝑬𝒏𝒈𝒍𝒊𝒔𝒉 colloquial phrase "𝒃𝒖𝒊𝒍𝒕 𝒍𝒊𝒌𝒆 𝒂 𝒃𝒓𝒊𝒄𝒌 𝒔𝒉𝒊𝒕𝒉𝒐𝒖𝒔𝒆" which is used to refer mainly to tall, big and muscular men. The term "𝒔𝒉𝒊𝒕𝒉𝒐𝒖𝒔𝒆" comes from the large brick-built outdoor toilets that were common in working class areas of the 𝑼𝑲, although it also means an obnoxious or despicable person, therefore it makes perfect sense that the "ghost", who is narrating the story in the song, refers to his killer as a "𝒃𝒓𝒊𝒄𝒌 𝒔𝒉𝒊𝒕𝒉𝒐𝒖𝒔𝒆".


🌟 𝐂𝐮𝐫𝐢𝐨𝐮𝐬 𝐅𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐬 🌟
🔸The line "𝑫𝒐𝒏'𝒕 𝒚𝒐𝒖 𝒘𝒊𝒔𝒉 𝒚𝒐𝒖'𝒅 𝒏𝒆𝒗𝒆𝒓 𝒎𝒆𝒕 𝒉𝒆𝒓?" appears in the lyrics of "𝑹𝒊𝒅 𝑶𝒇 𝑴𝒆", the title track of 𝑷𝑱 𝑯𝒂𝒓𝒗𝒆𝒚's second album released in 1993, which in turn she took from the song "𝑫𝒊𝒓𝒕𝒚 𝑩𝒍𝒖𝒆 𝑮𝒆𝒏𝒆" by 𝑪𝒂𝒑𝒕𝒂𝒊𝒏 𝑩𝒆𝒆𝒇𝒉𝒆𝒂𝒓𝒕 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝑯𝒊𝒔 𝑴𝒂𝒈𝒊𝒄 𝑩𝒂𝒏𝒅 (yes! the same band that had a song called 𝑨𝒔𝒉𝒕𝒓𝒂𝒚 𝑯𝒆𝒂𝒓𝒕, from which 𝑩𝒓𝒊𝒂𝒏 and 𝑺𝒕𝒆𝒇𝒂𝒏 𝑶𝒍𝒔𝒅𝒂𝒍 took the first name of the band before being called 𝑷𝒍𝒂𝒄𝒆𝒃𝒐). Coincidentally, this 𝑷𝑱 song speaks of a similar feeling to "𝑩𝒓𝒊𝒄𝒌 𝑺𝒉𝒊𝒕𝒉𝒐𝒖𝒔𝒆" although more extreme, as 𝑷𝒐𝒍𝒍𝒚 wrote it when she was going through a very difficult period in her life. She had a nervous breakdown as a result of the exhaustion of having toured almost non-stop for a year. She was barely eating and was also coping with the breakup of a relationship. As far as I know, 𝑩𝒓𝒊𝒂𝒏 has not confirmed that it is a reference to 𝑷𝑱 𝑯𝒂𝒓𝒗𝒆𝒚, but the truth is that he admires her a lot and she is one of his main influences in his writing.

Dear Soulmates, this evening, as a bedtime reading I offer you an interview dating back to 1997 in which the “early Brian” talks about the records that have influenced him the most and the songs that played the soundtrack of his “crazy living” at that time.

Brian’s answers are very sincere, instinctive and hilarious of course, as he used to in those years.

1st RECORD YOU BOUGHT?
💿 ‘Thriller’ by Michael Jackson when I was about nine, because of the guitars on "Beat It", which Eddie Van Halen played. We heard it in a cab the other day and it was such a cheese. Here’s to artificial insemination, eh?

LAST RECORD YOU BOUGHT?
💿 How about the one I stole? ‘Harmacy’ by Sebadoh, which I stole from my flatmate. It’s an amazing record, but I’ve played it so much on the tour bus that it just jumps all the time now.


FAVE DANCE ALBUM?
💿 We’ve been playing The Prodigy’s Music For The Jilted Generation before we go onstage. When we were in Germany and not very happy, we used to put porn videos on in the tour bus and turn the sound full up, and then put this techno record by Baby Doc And The Scientist on at full volume as well, and drink half a bottle of whisky before we went onstage. Techno is good for vibing you up.


RECORD YOU’D PUT ON BEFORE A NIGHT ON THE RAZZ?
💿 Last night, when I was going out to celebrate my birthday. It was ‘Evil Empire’ by Rage Against The Machine. But I don’t have any set record for that.


RECORD YOU’D PUT ON THE MORNING AFTER A NIGHT ON THE RAZZ?
💿 Probably something by Nick Drake, so I can wallow in self-pity and get really self-indulgent about how bad I feel. And then some ambient soundscapes by the Aphex twin to chill out to.


WHICH RECORD CHANGED YOUR LIFE?
💿 There’s two. ‘Goo’, the first record I heard by Sonic Youth, around my 16th birthday, and ‘Dry’ by PJ Harvey. Sonic Youth sounded like nothing I’d ever heard and opened up so many sonic possibilities to me. PJ Harvey’s record was so powerful, emotional and raw.

RECORD YOU’D USE TO SEDUCE SOMEONE?
💿 I remember sitting around people’s flats listening to ‘Let’s Get It On’ by Marvin Gaye, and wondering how anyone could try to get someone into bed with all those ‘oohs’ and ‘ahhs’ in the background. I’ve used Galaxie 500 or Seefeel. They worked, but wasn’t purely to the music. If you could make an automatic pulling record, it would never leave the top of the charts.


MOST EMBARRASSING RECORD IN YOUR COLLECTION?
💿 I get given loads of rubbish. So, I have two Alanis Morissette records which I hide when anyone with taste calls around.


THREE RECORDS YOU’D GIVE FIVE Ks TO?
💿 ‘Bakesale’ by Sebadoh, which is unbelievably heart-wrenching. ‘Sister’ by Sonic Youth, which is their ‘Sgt. Pepper’. And PJ Harvey’s ‘Rid Of Me’, which is one of the sassiest, most disturbing, in-your-f***ing-face girl power records ever.


RECORD YOU’D RECOMMEND TO A KERRANG! READER?
💿 Go beyond metal and buy ‘Dubnobasswithmyheadman’ by Underworld. It’s kinda head dance music, and the way they assemble the words like you’d assemble a beat is really cool.

We are still partying, celebrating the birthday of an amazing artist who is one of 𝑩𝒓𝒊𝒂𝒏 𝑴𝒐𝒍𝒌𝒐's biggest musical influences.

English singer, songwriter and musician 𝑷𝒐𝒍𝒍𝒚 𝑱𝒆𝒂𝒏 𝑯𝒂𝒓𝒗𝒆𝒚 was born on October 9, 1969 in 𝑩𝒓𝒊𝒅𝒑𝒐𝒓𝒕, 𝑫𝒐𝒓𝒔𝒆𝒕. In 1988 she joined the band 𝑨𝒖𝒕𝒐𝒎𝒂𝒕𝒊𝒄 𝑫𝒍𝒂𝒎𝒊𝒏𝒊 as singer, guitarist and saxophonist. In 1991 she formed an eponymous trio "𝑷𝑱 𝑯𝒂𝒓𝒗𝒆𝒚" with two members of her former band and in 1992 their first album "𝑫𝒓𝒚" was released. After recording their second album "𝑹𝒊𝒅 𝑶𝒇 𝑴𝒆" (1993), the trio disbanded and 𝑷𝑱 continued as a solo artist. 𝑷𝑱 𝑯𝒂𝒓𝒗𝒆𝒚 stands out by reinventing herself in each one of the nine albums she has released to date, in which she experiments with different genres, instruments and even her image, creating a particular aesthetic that encompasses the album artwork and her live performances as well.


🎤 "When I'm working on a new record, the most important thing is to not repeat myself ... that's always my aim: to try and cover new ground and really to challenge myself. Because I'm in this for learning."

Besides being a multi-instrumentalist, 𝑷𝑱 has complemented her musical career with sculpture, painting, photography, poetry and sometimes acting. Among the artists she has collaborated with are 𝑵𝒊𝒄𝒌 𝑪𝒂𝒗𝒆, 𝑻𝒐𝒎 𝒀𝒐𝒓𝒌 (𝑹𝒂𝒅𝒊𝒐𝒉𝒆𝒂𝒅), 𝑩𝒋𝒐̈𝒓𝒌, 𝑱𝒐𝒔𝒉 𝑯𝒐𝒎𝒎𝒆 (𝑸𝒖𝒆𝒆𝒏𝒔 𝑶𝒇 𝑻𝒉𝒆 𝑺𝒕𝒐𝒏𝒆 𝑨𝒈𝒆) and 𝑱𝒐𝒉𝒏 𝑷𝒂𝒓𝒊𝒔𝒉, former member of 𝑨𝒖𝒕𝒐𝒎𝒂𝒕𝒊𝒄 𝑫𝒍𝒂𝒎𝒊𝒏𝒊 and whom she has referred to as her "𝒎𝒖𝒔𝒊𝒄𝒂𝒍 𝒔𝒐𝒖𝒍𝒎𝒂𝒕𝒆" as she has continued collaborating with him ever since.

Her great talent has been recognised with several awards throughout her career, including being the only artist to have won the 𝑴𝒆𝒓𝒄𝒖𝒓𝒚 𝑷𝒓𝒊𝒛𝒆 twice. She also was named a 𝑴𝒆𝒎𝒃𝒆𝒓 𝒐𝒇 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝑶𝒓𝒅𝒆𝒓 𝒐𝒇 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝑩𝒓𝒊𝒕𝒊𝒔𝒉 𝑬𝒎𝒑𝒊𝒓𝒆 (𝑴𝑩𝑬) by 𝑸𝒖𝒆𝒆𝒏 𝑬𝒍𝒊𝒛𝒂𝒃𝒆𝒕𝒉 𝑰𝑰 in the 𝑩𝒊𝒓𝒕𝒉𝒅𝒂𝒚 𝑯𝒐𝒏𝒐𝒖𝒓𝒔 in June 2013 for her services to music and the following year, she was awarded an 𝑯𝒐𝒏𝒐𝒓𝒂𝒓𝒚 𝑫𝒆𝒈𝒓𝒆𝒆 𝒊𝒏 𝑴𝒖𝒔𝒊𝒄 by 𝑮𝒐𝒍𝒅𝒔𝒎𝒊𝒕𝒉𝒔 𝑼𝒏𝒊𝒗𝒆𝒓𝒔𝒊𝒕𝒚 𝒐𝒇 𝑳𝒐𝒏𝒅𝒐𝒏.

As I wrote at the beginning of this post, 𝑷𝑱 𝑯𝒂𝒓𝒗𝒆𝒚 is one of the artists 𝑩𝒓𝒊𝒂𝒏 𝑴𝒐𝒍𝒌𝒐 admires most along with 𝑺𝒐𝒏𝒊𝒄 𝒀𝒐𝒖𝒕𝒉. 𝑷𝑱's music has marked him so deeply that it has influenced not only 𝑷𝒍𝒂𝒄𝒆𝒃𝒐's sound but also his songwriting, as he expressed it in the quotes below:

🎤 "After I moved to London I heard PJ Harvey for the first time and the emotional intensity and depth of the album, Dry, also had a very, very big effect on me. I guess when I went into the idea of a band I kind of wanted to marry the kind of dissonant, atonal beauty of Sonic Youth's experimentalization with the kind of pained confessional and highly emotional quality that PJ Harvey's music has."

In the article "𝑺𝒐𝒏𝒈𝒔 𝒕𝒉𝒂𝒕 𝒄𝒉𝒂𝒏𝒈𝒆𝒅 𝒎𝒚 𝒍𝒊𝒇𝒆" published in 𝑲𝒆𝒓𝒓𝒂𝒏𝒈 𝑴𝒂𝒈𝒂𝒛𝒊𝒏𝒆 in June 2006, 𝑩𝒓𝒊𝒂𝒏 mentioned the song "𝑺𝒉𝒆𝒆𝒍𝒂-𝑵𝒂-𝑮𝒊𝒈" from 𝑷𝑱 𝑯𝒂𝒓𝒗𝒆𝒚's first album "𝑫𝒓𝒚", revealing that

🎤 "Steve[Hewitt, drums] introduced me to PJ Harvey when we were at university. Her songwriting instantly became a big influence on me. I was struck by how individual her voice was and then by how taut and nervous the instrumentation was. It was so expressive of internal torment, desire, lust and rejection. She’s always been very brave, she’s not afraid to make a record that sounds like someone bleeding on you."

✒️ Me, Steve and Bill feel like death warmed up and moan all the way to Sydney. We invite PJ Harvey and her band to come on a Sydney harbour cruise organised by Virgin. They accept and we spend a beautiful evening seeing the sunset behind the Opera house. Fruit bats fly above us and we can see people walk the arch of the Sydney bridge. If I thought the tower in Tokyo was bad, that walk would definitely bring on my heart attack. I can hardly string a sentence together and go to bed. Bri's over the moon as he got a chance to properly talk to Polly and feels there is a connection. Maybe time to ask about a duet? He goes for dinner with Mick Harvey and some of the PJ crew.

The hotel's in Coogee bay just by the beach and the temp is around 35 all week. Inevitable sunburns.

Ah yes, 𝑩𝒓𝒊𝒂𝒏 has always wanted to do a collaboration with 𝑷𝑱 𝑯𝒂𝒓𝒗𝒆𝒚. I still have hopes that one day his dream will come true. 🤞🌠 That would be completely awesome! 🤩
