📰It’s time to search for some 𝒐𝒍𝒅 𝑷𝒍𝒂𝒄𝒆𝒃𝒐 𝒎𝒂𝒈𝒂𝒛𝒊𝒏𝒆 𝒄𝒖𝒕-𝒐𝒇𝒇𝒔 again. Today, my finding is a short 𝐁𝐑𝐈𝐀𝐍'𝐒 𝐈𝐍𝐓𝐄𝐑𝐕𝐈𝐄𝐖 from around 1997, I guess, where he comments on his favourite artists. Those of you who like a very young Brian’s way of expression and sense of humour, will enjoy it😉

On May 23rd 1996, shortly before the release of their self-titled debut album, Placebo started their 🔸𝗙𝗜𝗥𝗦𝗧 𝗕𝗜𝗚 𝗧𝗢𝗨𝗥🔸 with a concert at Luna Theatre in Brussels, Belgium. The band played 159 shows in the UK, Europe and North America. The last gig took place at Battersea Power Station in London on December 22nd 1997.

Interesting fact: The Placebo tour was the only time that the Smith cover “Bigmouth strikes again” was played live, but it was performed only once at a show in Wolverhampton, UK.

Exactly 25 years ago, on May 12th, 1997, Placebo’s song 𝐁𝐑𝐔𝐈𝐒𝐄 𝐏𝐑𝐈𝐒𝐓𝐈𝐍𝐄 was released as the fifth and final single from the band’s self-titled debut album. It reached no. 14 in the UK Singles Chart.

The single was released on 7" vinyl, cassette, and CD.
The song is a heavy riff-based track and is notable for its "behind the bridge" guitar solo. The 𝒓𝒂𝒅𝒊𝒐 𝒆𝒅𝒊𝒕 is intended to be more radio friendly; after the intro it cuts directly to the vocal verse and the solo is cut short.


🔶In fact, the story of 𝐁𝐑𝐔𝐈𝐒𝐄 𝐏𝐑𝐈𝐒𝐓𝐈𝐍𝐄 started much earlier. as it’s Placebo’s very first song that has ever been released. Its original version was featured on the split single with the band Soup released by the record label Fierce Panda in October 1995. This version is different from the one which appeared on the 1996 album Placebo.

The 1995 single version was later included into the Fierce Panda compilation Nings and Roundabouts, which 𝐁𝐫𝐢𝐚𝐧 wasn’t specifically happy about…😉

"We really hate that version, it's so fast and, honestly, I do sound like Mickey Mouse on it. We were going to say no, but it's so ridiculous it has to be documented in some way. I can't really understand where this helium thing came from. My balls have dropped since then."

Both 𝐁𝐫𝐢𝐚𝐧 and 𝐒𝐭𝐞𝐟𝐚𝐧 have some funny memories related to the first time they heard Placebo on the radio.
📢𝐒𝐭𝐞𝐟𝐚𝐧: “For me it was Bruise Pristine. The DJ played it at the wrong speed. He thought the voice was too high for a guy, so he played it from 45s to 33s. It was our first time on the radio.”

📢𝐁𝐫𝐢𝐚𝐧 𝐌𝐨𝐥𝐤𝐨: “It was so fast Mark Radcliff played it on the radio at 33rpm because he was sure it was far too short. It came out sounding like the Swans. Our first play on the radio was at the wrong speed; we thought that was very funny.”
📢𝐒𝐭𝐞𝐟𝐚𝐧 𝐎𝐥𝐬𝐝𝐚𝐥: “We had a launch gig at the Freedom Café on bonfire night – I remember because people set off the fire alarms with their sparklers!”
📢𝐁𝐫𝐢𝐚𝐧: “The version that came out as a (later) single was actually re-recorded in London with Phil Vynall who did ‘Pure Morning’, whereas the album was dome in Dublin. We wanted to go to Amsterdam, but our managers wouldn’t let us. The idea was to get out of London but not go too far. I think they thought Dublin would have a bit of a calming influence on us. It was quite a calming influence – we didn’t really do much…”

⭐We definitely shouldn’t underestimate the song's very first 1995 release. Despite the imperfections mentioned by Brian, the original version of 𝐁𝐑𝐔𝐈𝐒𝐄 𝐏𝐑𝐈𝐒𝐓𝐈𝐍𝐄 occurred to be really crucial for Placebo’s career as it helped the young band to get their 𝒇𝒊𝒓𝒔𝒕 𝒓𝒆𝒄𝒐𝒓𝒅 𝒅𝒆𝒂𝒍.
“In the annual rush to snap up The Next Big Thing, one of the most prominent names on everyone's lips last year was London-based trio Placebo, who sparked a bidding war on the back of one single, Bruise Pristine on Fierce Panda, and just a handful of gigs. The race was eventually won by Virgin subsidiary Hut which signed the band to a multi-album deal in February.”

🔶The 𝑪𝑶𝑽𝑬𝑹 𝑨𝑹𝑻𝑾𝑶𝑹𝑲 of the 1995 Bruise Pristine release is based on the photograph of children in a bomb shelter during the Blitz by 𝑪𝒆𝒄𝒊𝒍 𝑩𝒆𝒂𝒕𝒐𝒏, a famous British fashion, portrait and war photographer, diarist, painter, interior and costume designer.
On the cover of the 1997 single, there’s a photo by 𝑺𝒂𝒖𝒍 𝑭𝒍𝒆𝒕𝒄𝒉𝒆𝒓.


🔶The 𝒐𝒇𝒇𝒊𝒄𝒊𝒂𝒍 𝒗𝒊𝒅𝒆𝒐 for 𝐁𝐑𝐔𝐈𝐒𝐄 𝐏𝐑𝐈𝐒𝐓𝐈𝐍𝐄 was directed by 𝑯𝒐𝒘𝒂𝒓𝒅 𝑮𝒓𝒆𝒆𝒏𝒉𝒂𝒍𝒈𝒉 known for his work with some great artists as Elton John, Pet Shop Boys, INXS, George Michael, Soundgarden to name a few. Greenhalgh continued collaborating with Placebo over the next years and directed music videos for Nancy Boy, Special K, Slave to the Wage, The Bitter End, This Picture, and For What It's Worth for them.

Today, however, I had a great need to go back in time and remember Placebo's beginning.
I found a beautiful Stefan's interview from 1997, which is worth sharing just because of the last two sentences.

"Since then, I've tried to emulate a particular sound or hero. I've always thought more about the creative side. I had two or three bass lessons, but I don't really believe in being taught how to play; I think it's better to teach yourself. I played guitar for about four years when I was in a band in Sweden. Then I came to London and guitar. With the guitar I tried to get as technically good as I could, so I could play as second nature and express myself better."

"I bumped into Brian (Molko, guitar?vocals) after a five year gap. He did a gig in a pub in south London, and when I saw him play I just said "let's play together", and that was that. I fell in love with his voice and his guitar playing because it was really different. We started playing together but we kept on switching instruments. I could never be satisfied with one instrument."

"Brian created most of our songs to start with, sitting at home, writing and singing. Now sound checks and rehearsals are where our creating is mostly done. Sometimes you can sit at home, get an idea and bring it to the band, but mostly it's a complete band effort. "One Big Evil Dildo", the band's live encore track, came out of a sound check in East Germany. That was the first time we had ever played that together, and we performed it, recorded it and kept it that way."

"We did a couple of dates with David bowie last year, and his 50th annervesary bash in Madison Square Garden in January; they were amazing gigs." Meantime, 2 + years of continuous touring with Ash, Bush, and fellow Swedes Whale, will soon draw to a close to allow some studio time for the band.


"We're going to be touring until the end of August and then we're trying to get a break from it. I'm just going to concentrate on the studio.
Without the music, it's nothing."

"My favourite song is `I.Q'," he comments. "I just think it's the most dynamic and beautiful - musically and melodically. It has a toy piano in there - and it's my best playing as well. The thing with a three-piece is it forces you to get into your instrument a lot more. It's a very triangular thing, and Brian's guitar playing and my bass playing tend to work hand in hand. I'm not a big fan of the big, fat E-string. I find that it can be a bit boring. There's much more you can do with the bass; there are some really nice tonal qualities to it. I'm approaching bass now to take it somewhere new; I'm playing it more like a guitar in someways."

Last time you were embarrassed?
“That would have been when I got thrown out of the girls’ toilets in a venue in Buffalo, New York. No, I can’t tell you what I was doing to get thrown out…”

Last time you wanted to hit someone?
“It was a fellow musician when we were taking part in a debate about ‘Yob Rock’ for another magazine. He was really attacking a guy from another band, being unnecessarily insulting, so I wanted to teach him some manners.”

Last time you were inside a church?
“For the christening of our drummer Steve’s baby. My Mum used to drag me to church every Sunday when I was younger, but I have no desire whatsoever to attend now.”

Last time you were scared?
“When I almost got busted in Trafalgar Square whilst carrying class A drugs. I was psyching myself up for a search and a night in the cells, because I was completely wired when the two cops searched me.”

Last person you’d want to be trapped in a lift with?
“Gary Glitter. I recon he wouldn’t shut up and he’d be really irritating. Elevator lights are too bright like the lights in McDonald’s, and I think his suit would be too much for me to bear.”

Last band who really inspired you?
“Girls Against Boys. We’ve played with them last year and they’re amazing. I love then for their energy, their sexiness, their low-down crotch bass, their hip-orientated grooves, everything.”

Last sports event you attended?
“I went to my first ever, and possibly last ever, football match in Dundee on Boxing Day. I went with our manager Dave, who’s a Dundee United fan, because I was staying in Dundee with my Mum anyway. I froze my bollocks off, but it was an okay match.”

Last good film you saw?
“The new ‘Romeo And Juliet’ movie – it’s excellent. It’s set in modern times and it’s totally amazing with a cool, totally modern soundtrack. I’m really into films. On tour we play this game called Cinemaphobia, where you have to link different actors through the films they’ve been in with other people. Usually, any two actors can be linked via their co-stars within three films…’

Last time you gave money to charity?
“The last time I flew back from the States I stuck my change in the Unicef bag. I hardly ever think of giving money to charity. That’s shameful, isn’t it?”

Last time you were mistaken for a girl?
In a pub in Brixton. I got asked, ‘What do you want, love?’, so I said, ‘A pint of Stella’ in my gruffest possible voice. I get mistaken for a girl all the time. I was at a party once and this guy spent half an hour chatting me up before he realised I wasn’r a girl. He only copped on because I finally said, ‘My name’s Brian’ – and he laughed and said, ‘How can your name be Brian if you’re a girl?’. I think he was a little disappointed.”

Last time you cried?
“On my birthday I bawled my eyes out. It’s my party so I can cry if I want to! I freak out when I get very drunk. We call it ‘going to Super France’. You drink too much whisky, shout a lot and get energetic for a couple of hours, then at some point in the evening you have a complete freak-out, and burst into tears and end up lying in the road.”

1st RECORD YOU BOUGHT?
💿 ‘Thriller’ by Michael Jackson when I was about nine, because of the guitars on "Beat It", which Eddie Van Halen played. We heard it in a cab the other day and it was such a cheese. Here’s to artificial insemination, eh?

LAST RECORD YOU BOUGHT?
💿 How about the one I stole? ‘Harmacy’ by Sebadoh, which I stole from my flatmate. It’s an amazing record, but I’ve played it so much on the tour bus that it just jumps all the time now.


FAVE DANCE ALBUM?
💿 We’ve been playing The Prodigy’s Music For The Jilted Generation before we go onstage. When we were in Germany and not very happy, we used to put porn videos on in the tour bus and turn the sound full up, and then put this techno record by Baby Doc And The Scientist on at full volume as well, and drink half a bottle of whisky before we went onstage. Techno is good for vibing you up.


RECORD YOU’D PUT ON BEFORE A NIGHT ON THE RAZZ?
💿 Last night, when I was going out to celebrate my birthday. It was ‘Evil Empire’ by Rage Against The Machine. But I don’t have any set record for that.


RECORD YOU’D PUT ON THE MORNING AFTER A NIGHT ON THE RAZZ?
💿 Probably something by Nick Drake, so I can wallow in self-pity and get really self-indulgent about how bad I feel. And then some ambient soundscapes by the Aphex twin to chill out to.


WHICH RECORD CHANGED YOUR LIFE?
💿 There’s two. ‘Goo’, the first record I heard by Sonic Youth, around my 16th birthday, and ‘Dry’ by PJ Harvey. Sonic Youth sounded like nothing I’d ever heard and opened up so many sonic possibilities to me. PJ Harvey’s record was so powerful, emotional and raw.

RECORD YOU’D USE TO SEDUCE SOMEONE?
💿 I remember sitting around people’s flats listening to ‘Let’s Get It On’ by Marvin Gaye, and wondering how anyone could try to get someone into bed with all those ‘oohs’ and ‘ahhs’ in the background. I’ve used Galaxie 500 or Seefeel. They worked, but wasn’t purely to the music. If you could make an automatic pulling record, it would never leave the top of the charts.


MOST EMBARRASSING RECORD IN YOUR COLLECTION?
💿 I get given loads of rubbish. So, I have two Alanis Morissette records which I hide when anyone with taste calls around.


THREE RECORDS YOU’D GIVE FIVE Ks TO?
💿 ‘Bakesale’ by Sebadoh, which is unbelievably heart-wrenching. ‘Sister’ by Sonic Youth, which is their ‘Sgt. Pepper’. And PJ Harvey’s ‘Rid Of Me’, which is one of the sassiest, most disturbing, in-your-f***ing-face girl power records ever.


RECORD YOU’D RECOMMEND TO A KERRANG! READER?
💿 Go beyond metal and buy ‘Dubnobasswithmyheadman’ by Underworld. It’s kinda head dance music, and the way they assemble the words like you’d assemble a beat is really cool.

⭐𝐑𝐎𝐆𝐄𝐑 𝐊𝐄𝐈𝐓𝐇 "𝐒𝐘𝐃" 𝐁𝐀𝐑𝐑𝐄𝐓𝐓 was an English singer, songwriter, and musician who co-founded the rock band 𝐏𝐢𝐧𝐤 𝐅𝐥𝐨𝐲𝐝 in 1965. Barrett was their original frontman and primary songwriter, becoming known for his whimsical take on psychedelia, English-accented singing, literary influences, and stream-of-consciousness writing style.

🔸𝑬𝒂𝒓𝒍𝒚 𝑳𝒊𝒇𝒆
Roger Keith Barrett, better known as Syd Barrett, was born in Cambridge, England on January 6, 1946. As a kid, he played piano, ukulele, banjo, and guitar. He also spent time writing and drawing, and he won awards for his poetry in high school.
Some stories say that he was given the nickname "Syd" around the age of 14 and that it refers to a local bass player named Sid Barrett. Others say he was given the nickname as a kid at scout camp.
As a teenager, Barrett formed a band, Geoff Mott and the Mottoes. In 1962, the band broke up, and Barrett began playing Beatles covers and writing his own songs. In 1964, he moved to London to study painting at the Camberwell College of Arts.

🔸𝑷𝒊𝒏𝒌 𝑭𝒍𝒐𝒚𝒅
Barrett knew Roger Waters from his school days in Cambridge, and he reconnected with him when he moved to London. With Pink Floyd, he recorded four singles, their debut album The Piper at the Gates of Dawn (1967), portions of their second album A Saucerful of Secrets (1968), and several unreleased songs. In April 1968, Barrett was ousted from the band amid speculation of mental illness and his excessive use of psychedelic drugs.
Pink Floyd later sang a number of tributes to Barrett, including "Shine on You Crazy Diamond," a nine-part composition recorded on their Wish You Were Here album.

🔸𝑳𝒂𝒕𝒆𝒓 𝑪𝒂𝒓𝒆𝒆𝒓
After leaving Pink Floyd, Barrett released two albums, both in 1970, The Madcap Laughs and Barrett, but he played only one concert between 1968 and 1972. In 1988, EMI Records released the album Opel, which included previously unreleased music that Barrett had recorded from 1968 to 1970.
In 1996, Barrett was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a founding member of Pink Floyd, but he did not attend the ceremony.

🔸𝑷𝒆𝒓𝒔𝒐𝒏𝒂𝒍 𝑳𝒊𝒇𝒆 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝑫𝒆𝒂𝒕𝒉
In 1978, Barrett moved in with his mother in Cambridge, and returned to painting. He also began to garden. He stayed out of the limelight, became annoyed when paparazzi snapped his picture and kept to himself, interacting mostly with his sister, Rosemary. Although he was hospitalized briefly, he was never officially diagnosed with a mental illness or medicated.
Barrett died of pancreatic cancer on July 7, 2006, at the age of 60, in Cambridge, England.

⭐𝐒𝐲𝐝 𝐁𝐚𝐫𝐫𝐞𝐭𝐭’𝐬 𝐯𝐬 𝐏𝐥𝐚𝐜𝐞𝐛𝐨’𝐬 𝐃𝐀𝐑𝐊 𝐆𝐋𝐎𝐁𝐄⭐
🔸𝐃𝐀𝐑𝐊 𝐆𝐋𝐎𝐁𝐄 was originally written and recorded by Syd Barrett for his solo album The Madcap Laughs (1970) during the recording session in June 1969. Next month, Syd Barrett re-recorded the song which this time was entitled 𝐖𝐨𝐮𝐥𝐝𝐧’𝐭 𝐘𝐨𝐮 𝐌𝐢𝐬𝐬 𝐌𝐞. It was later included into the album Opel (1988).

🔸𝐃𝐀𝐑𝐊 𝐆𝐋𝐎𝐁𝐄 is the first cover Placebo ever officially released. It was used as B-side on their single 𝟑𝟔 𝐃𝐞𝐠𝐫𝐞𝐞𝐬.
Moreover, it was probably one of the first covers Brian and Stef have ever played together! It was included into the setlist of their 𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐲 𝐟𝐢𝐫𝐬𝐭 𝐠𝐢𝐠 as a two-piece band in 1994. Most likely, it was also performed at Placebo’s 𝐟𝐢𝐫𝐬𝐭 𝐡𝐞𝐚𝐝𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐬𝐡𝐨𝐰 as a trio, with Robert Schultzberg, in January 1995.
The rest of the song’s live history is kind of veiled, it could be played at some other amateur 1994 gigs…

At 𝐅𝐨𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐠𝐥𝐚𝐝𝐞 𝐅𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐚𝐥 in Austria on July 19th, 1997, Brian performed Dark Globe a capella as an intro for Bruise Pristine to bridge technical issues.

𝑳𝒐𝒏𝒅𝒐𝒏 𝑩𝒓𝒊𝒙𝒕𝒐𝒏 𝑨𝒄𝒂𝒅𝒆𝒎𝒚, 𝟐𝟐𝒏𝒅 𝑴𝒂𝒚 𝟏𝟗𝟗𝟕

The little fella stage right hugs his guitar and tries with no little ability, frankly- to appear all small and coy. He glowers at his microphone and then he drawls, in a truly pan-global showbiz lilt, "𝑯𝒆𝒍𝒍𝒐, 𝒘𝒆'𝒓𝒆 𝑷𝒍𝒂𝒄𝒆𝒃𝒐 𝒘𝒆𝒍𝒄𝒐𝒎𝒆 𝒕𝒐 𝒐𝒖𝒓 𝒅𝒓𝒆𝒂𝒎 𝒄𝒐𝒎𝒆 𝒕𝒓𝒖𝒆." Woooosh! Stars collide! A guitar implodes! And 3,500 freshly conquered Placebites plunge headfirst into a universe of sex, sauce and, like, weirdness. Type stuff.

Because, as The Undertones very nearly shouted 'Hear Comes Ann Summers!' Yes sirree, Brian Molko's "dream come true" seems to somewhat hinge upon the basic joys of plecs: he shall wield an axe of the rock'n'roll variety; he shall smoke a string of tads, all casual, like; and he shall - as is his cheeky little wont - bounce across the stage wearing little more than a rather natty dress and leopard skin tights. Scooby!

Next to Molko, unfeasibly tall bassist Stefan Olsdal broods and bends not unlike an unfeasibly tall decked - nay, wrecked - out in hardcore storm trooper bondage gear, a loin-lunging Sven Hassel nightmare ready to rock the local Conservative party Casbah. At the back, it is surely to everybody's benefit that the figure of drummer Steve Hewitt remains concealed behind all manner of cymbal-like implements, for lawks knows precisely what sex shoppers' paradise he has been visiting in his secret vampish rhythm-romping world.

Story time: flashback to September 1995, in a shadowy Spanish bar in the heart of Soho, and a young Brian Molko is saying, with the kind of authority and simplicity that broods no argument, that his band "will be bigger than The Smashing Pumpkins". An audacious statement at the best of times, and surely an insanely optimistic career plan from a band who, at the point were poised to release the original debut version of 'Bruise Pristine', whose notoriety had spread no further then beyond an admittedly cheque book-crazed A&Arse fraternity, and whose infamy knew so few bounds that the name Placebo was less well known than that of their sarf London comrades Scarfo.

Shift forward 18 months and waddyaknow? Scarfo represent the supporting cast at Molko's very own Theatre of Screams as, after a slight stutter last spring, the Placebomoblie rolls around the country one more dramatic time, zipping through the six figure sales mark for the album and notching up another hit single! With 'Bruise Pristine' and now fame isn't merely the spur, it's a blur of groupies and groping moshpits and gruesomely addictive pop choonery masquerading as mini suicide attempts.

Is it a coincidence that tis very week Marilyn Manson tottered into town and played this very same venue? Yes! Is it coincidence that Meeeester Marilyn is really called Brian? Possibly! is it a coincidence that Brian Molko thinks that Marilyn Manson are BRILLIANT?! No, sirree! See, while Placebo are more like Mansun than the Mansons in macabre mascara stakes, they are still gleefully gathering up ne devotees thoroughly wracked off with Adidas-touting footie spouting bowlheads and seeking, you know, a bit of bedsit-tastic spiritual solace. With choruses. And sensitivity.

That Molko's Miss Selfridges act doesn't topple into cabaret is primarily down to the fact that, despite their more debonair sartorial instincts this evening, Placebo never actually camp it up. Where they could well mince into Julian Clary territory, they actually recall those sensational cross-dressing crossover points of Nirvana and the Manics, because like Cobain and Wire before him, Molko has mastered the art of dressing like a girl and rocking like a complete bastard.

True, there are times tonight when you suspect that Placebo's rise might have been slightly too stellar: as magnificent as their shows were at the snuggle old Astoria a couple of months ago, the trio's stripped down paunched sensibilities occasionally struggles to fill the severely vast Academy. Equally, one gets the slight suspicion that the strife of Brian is manifesting itself in auto-pilot mid-song banter as their promotional duties grind on and on . Like hasn't he been using that scientific intro to '36 degrees' for months now? Doesn't he always embrace his guitar like that during 'Nancy Boy'?

When their good however, Placebo are a biotically fine proposition, a victorious whippet-like whirl of suss, pus and adolescent cussing. There's the headrace of frazzled singles, notably an eye-bulgingly louche 'Come Home'; there are the massively cool comedown cruisers, 'Hang On To Your IQ' and 'Lady Of The Flowers'; there are a couple of irascibly frantic fuck tha'-industry-style new models; and there is the by-now-traditional sonic bloom of the encore, wherein Stefan and Brian swap instruments and go utterly feedback-buckingly berserk because, hell, it's their party and they'll fly if they want to, right?

Placebo, then: tell 'em what you Quant, what you really, really Quant.

🔹Dear soulmates, what did you think of this review of 𝑷𝒍𝒂𝒄𝒆𝒃𝒐's first gig at 𝑩𝒓𝒊𝒙𝒕𝒐𝒏 𝑨𝒄𝒂𝒅𝒆𝒎𝒚?
They had only played there when they filmed their scenes for the movie "𝑽𝒆𝒍𝒗𝒆𝒕 𝑮𝒐𝒍𝒅𝒎𝒊𝒏𝒆" and ever since the band started, 𝑩𝒓𝒊𝒂𝒏 𝑴𝒐𝒍𝒌𝒐 had dreamed of playing there one day. That day was 𝑴𝒂𝒚 𝟐𝟐𝒏𝒅, 𝟏𝟗𝟗𝟕. In their set they played songs from their first album and new tracks that would later be part of their second album, although the song "𝑲𝒊𝒕𝒔𝒄𝒉 𝑶𝒃𝒋𝒆𝒄𝒕" did not have the same luck. It is also probably one of the first times - if not the very first - that 𝑩𝒓𝒊𝒂𝒏 appeared on stage wearing a dress.

Below you can enjoy the entire concert. Though it doesn't have the best quality, recording a whole concert at that time was quite a feat and today it is an invaluable document and a marvel to be able to see these images.

I was at a party once and this guy spent half an hour chatting me up before he realised I wasn't a girl. He only copped on because I finally said 'My name is Brian' – and he laughed and said 'How can your name be Brian if you're a girl?'. I think he was a little disappointed.”

𝗣𝗟𝗔𝗖𝗘𝗕𝗢 𝗜𝗡 𝗦𝗣𝗔𝗜𝗡 𝟭𝟵𝟵𝟳

On June 6, 1997 𝑷𝒍𝒂𝒄𝒆𝒃𝒐 visited Spain for the very first time and performed a single concert in the small concert venue in Madrid called 𝑬𝒍 𝑺𝒐𝒍. Sadly there is no proper recording of this concert but there are a few images of that night and other very funny scenes of the band from this visit that you can see below:

After a little more than a month, 𝑷𝒍𝒂𝒄𝒆𝒃𝒐 returned to Spain, this time along with 𝑫𝒂𝒗𝒊𝒅 𝑩𝒐𝒘𝒊𝒆 to open the concerts that the "𝑾𝒉𝒊𝒕𝒆 𝑫𝒖𝒌𝒆" with his "𝑬𝒂𝒓𝒕𝒉𝒍𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝑻𝒐𝒖𝒓" would offer in Madrid (07.15.97), Zaragoza (07.16.97) and San Sebastian (07.17.97).

🔹Originally, the Madrid concert was to be held at 𝑳𝒂𝒔 𝑽𝒆𝒏𝒕𝒂𝒔 bullring but it ended up taking place at 𝑨𝒒𝒖𝒂𝒍𝒖𝒏𝒈 in front of 3,000 people. The organizers stated that the concert had been moved due to the "complexity of the staging". However, other sources said that in reality there was not the expected demand for over 15,000 seats to see 𝑫𝒂𝒗𝒊𝒅 𝑩𝒐𝒘𝒊𝒆. Can you believe it? Surely now many people wish they had gotten one of those tickets to see his show because it was the last time 𝑫𝒂𝒗𝒊𝒅 visited Spain.

🔹The next day at the 𝑷𝒓𝒊́𝒏𝒄𝒊𝒑𝒆 𝑭𝒆𝒍𝒊𝒑𝒆 𝑷𝒂𝒗𝒊𝒍𝒊𝒐𝒏 in Zaragoza, 𝑩𝒐𝒘𝒊𝒆's other usual supporting act, the British band 𝑴𝒂𝒏𝒔𝒖𝒏, did not perform and was replaced by a local band called 𝑫𝒊𝒔𝒕𝒓𝒊𝒕𝒐 𝟏𝟒, followed by our 𝑷𝒍𝒂𝒄𝒆𝒃𝒐.

🔹In the last concert at the 𝑨𝒏𝒐𝒆𝒕𝒂 𝑽𝒆𝒍𝒐𝒅𝒓𝒐𝒎𝒆 in San Sebastian and in front of 6,000 people, 𝑷𝒍𝒂𝒄𝒆𝒃𝒐 and 𝑫𝒊𝒔𝒕𝒓𝒊𝒕𝒐 𝟏𝟒 were again the opening act. Later, in memory of 𝑫𝒂𝒗𝒊𝒅 𝑩𝒐𝒘𝒊𝒆, the leader and voice of 𝑫𝒊𝒔𝒕𝒓𝒊𝒕𝒐 𝟏𝟒, 𝑴𝒂𝒓𝒊𝒂𝒏𝒐 𝑪𝒂𝒔𝒂𝒏𝒐𝒗𝒂 stated in a letter published on his Facebook account, that night 𝑫𝒂𝒗𝒊𝒅 came to their dressing room "wearing a dressing gown and white house slippers" to congratulate them for their performance, a gesture that 𝑴𝒂𝒓𝒊𝒂𝒏𝒐 considers as the greatest and truest music award he has ever received and something he will never forget.

But what did 𝑫𝒂𝒗𝒊𝒅 𝑩𝒐𝒘𝒊𝒆 think about 𝑷𝒍𝒂𝒄𝒆𝒃𝒐 opening his concerts? Well, I found an interview published in Spain that was made by 𝑫𝒂𝒗𝒊𝒅 at that time, his words are really a gem! 💖

Dear friends, today I have the third final part of the interview from NZ Herald for you.
𝑰𝒕 𝒘𝒂𝒔 𝟏𝟗𝟗𝟕 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒉𝒖𝒈𝒆 𝒓𝒐𝒄𝒌 𝒈𝒊𝒂𝒏𝒕 𝑼2 𝒘𝒆𝒏𝒕 𝒐𝒏 𝒕𝒐𝒖𝒓 𝒊𝒏 𝒔𝒖𝒑𝒑𝒐𝒓𝒕 𝒐𝒇 𝒕𝒉𝒆𝒊𝒓 𝒏𝒆𝒘 𝒂𝒍𝒃𝒖𝒎 𝑷𝑶𝑷.
The reactions on this album were not good at all. The rock fans of this band were desperate about the new electronic direction that U2 has set out on.
And to this day, it is one of my favorite albums from this band. It is probably clear to you that this tour did not leave me cold.
When Prague confirmed that the giant stadium in Strahov will be one of the U2 PopMart stops, my joy was huge.
I had the opportunity to enjoy a concert attended by 61,000 people!
But it was not my first experience because a few years earlier, in 1994, Pink Floyd performed in Prague with the participation of 130,000 fans.
It was an incredible memories for a lifetime.

Unfortunately, the band Placebo played as the opening act for U2 in only five cities in Western Europe, so they did not reach Prague.
Too bad I couldn't see two great loves in one day…

There is not much to be said about Placebo's support on this U2 tour, just a few mentions in some interviews, such as in the 2000 NZ Herald:
"U2 was an incredible opportunity which was too good to turn down," Molko says.
"We were trying to stop touring because it was keeping us out of the studio. We had decided to stop, then the U2 offer came in and we couldn't say no to that. We had others, too, but were in the fortunate position of being able to say no.
"We're very flexible. We've got a big enough set of songs so that we can tailor it to whatever audience we're playing. We'd play a few more of our gentler songs for the U2 crowd, but if we were in a room with a few hundred people who were our fans we'd probably play full-out punk rock."

Placebo accompanied U2 on tour in September 1997 in the following cities: Paris, Madrid, Lisbon, Barcelona, Montpellier. But it wasn't easy at all. It was a very ungrateful task, to try to attract an audience that was looking forward only to their beloved U2. There are almost no records from these Placebo opening sets.
But today I will share with you everything I have been able to find.

A Spanish newspaper says of the concert in Madrid:
"Placebo were the ones in charge of starting the hostilities. Their singer, Brian Molko, spent half a performance asking the audience: "Am I a boy or am I a girl?" It must have been the little he was able to say in Spanish, but the fact is that among those gathered there doubts arose. Keep in mind that Placebo were unknown at the time, only somewhat popular thanks to their theme Nancy Boy, included in the film Airbag, by Juanma Bajo Ulloa.
In any case, they gave a more than dignified performance, something that must be really difficult when you have to face the public Taliban of U2."

Fortunately for us, in the interview with Sally Stratton in 1998, Placebo also mentioned a tour with U2:
𝑺𝑺: 𝒀𝒐𝒖 𝒕𝒐𝒖𝒓𝒆𝒅 𝒘𝒊𝒕𝒉 𝑼2 𝒅𝒊𝒅𝒏'𝒕 𝒚𝒐𝒖?
Brian: Yes we did, yes we did five gigs with U2 at the end of last year on the Popmart tour. They gave us our biggest gig of our lives which was the Olympic Stadium in Barcelona, you know 80 to 100,000 people as the sun was going down in the rain, what a buzz. Then we got on the Lemon jet and flew to Portugal.
𝑺𝑺: 𝑫𝒊𝒅 𝒚𝒐𝒖 𝒈𝒆𝒕 𝒂𝒏𝒚 𝒊𝒅𝒆𝒂𝒔 𝒇𝒓𝒐𝒎 𝒔𝒆𝒆𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒉𝒐𝒘 𝒕𝒉𝒆𝒚 𝒘𝒐𝒏 𝒐𝒗𝒆𝒓 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒄𝒓𝒐𝒘𝒅 𝒐𝒏 𝒕𝒉𝒂𝒕 𝒕𝒐𝒖𝒓?
Brian: The show is just so amazing, really. We felt quite privileged to be able to like do a show and then you just like step out into the front row and then you've got this amazing visual spectacle, you know. And they were even playing stuff from their first album, do you know what I mean, it was like really, really quite exciting.
𝑺𝑺: 𝑫𝒊𝒅 𝒚𝒐𝒖 𝒈𝒆𝒕 𝒐𝒏 𝒘𝒆𝒍𝒍 𝒘𝒊𝒕𝒉 𝒕𝒉𝒆𝒎?
Stefan: Yes. We hung out, sort of had a chat with them on the plane. I wasn't feeling very well that day but yes, they were really sort of accommodating and you know quite down to earth. Larry was sitting there reading his book you know...I mean you've got to admire them really for what they've done and how they've actually managed to maintain a really good rapport with the bands they tour with. I mean Bono was rolling around on stage and screaming 'Placebo' at the end of the show, and I was just like 'whoa, I can't believe this.'

Placebo were supporters of some European U2 dates and, on the occasion, their frontman Molko was able to overcome his atavistic fear of flying, as he himself said. "They took us with their jet, bound for Lisbon, where our next concert stop was. I drank a lot to calm myself down, but when we ran into this terrible turbulence, I thought we were going to die. Then I remembered we were with U2 and I immediately calmed down, because they are eternal.
