A mesmerizing stage show, a long setlist, a charismatic vocal performance and an unusually mammoth focus on the new album. Before the performance, Placebo fans repeatedly were asked to leave their mobile phones in their pockets for the most interesting experience of the evening, which the whole hall respected. It was so refreshing to go back to the days about fifteen years ago, when people went to concerts to listen and experience them, and not to make low-quality videos on YouTube…

Molko's uniquely colored voice is as powerful and penetrating as on the albums, the accompanying projections sometimes had a hypnotic effect, and at other times they perfectly accompanied the paranoid atmosphere of some songs (Surrounded By Spies), so the result was an extremely intense experience for both the ears and the eyes. Placebo managed to impress their sound with timelessness, they still seems alive and attractive like in the days of Without You I'm Nothing or Black Market Music.

There was basically no need for words, everything was expressed by the songs themselves. Molko himself didn't speak once during the entire evening, but even so, it's not something that should be criticized. The set was built mainly on novelties. Eleven new songs, that's courage and faith in new material. But it worked and the Czech audience knew the lyrics as if they were old classics, and the response on the other side was always incredible.
Some of the best moments of the evening included the album's biggest experiments. The atmospheric Surrounded By Spies sounds absolutely wonderful live, as does the dark Went Missing. On the contrary, a big party broke out with the straightforward singles Beautiful James and Try Better Next Time, when the whole hall sang along.

Placebo had a concert planned in Prague as part of their new Never Let Me Go tour.
The moment I saw the date 31 October, I fell right into childish joy. Is this even possible?

I couldn't believe it... And immediately started saving up to buy tickets. I wanted to go to this show with my amazing daughter Katy, who is my Placebo soulmate. We began to look forward to and take notice of the ongoing tour.

Gradually, I felt the growing tension between the fans, who split into two camps – I'm sure you know what I'm talking about. Brian insisted more and more on accommodating and respecting his needs, while many fans found this pressure just restrictive and intolerant. I explored the feelings echoing inside me.

The text that is shown at the beginning of every show on this tour... It could be just a few simple words... But I knew it was a glimpse into Placebo's soul.

This long text to me said - ๐Ÿ”น๐˜ฉ๐˜ฆ๐˜บ, ๐˜ธ๐˜ฆ'๐˜ณ๐˜ฆ ๐˜ซ๐˜ถ๐˜ด๐˜ต ๐˜ฉ๐˜ฆ๐˜ณ๐˜ฆ ๐˜ง๐˜ฐ๐˜ณ ๐˜บ๐˜ฐ๐˜ถ ๐˜ฏ๐˜ฐ๐˜ธ, ๐˜ธ๐˜ฆ ๐˜ธ๐˜ข๐˜ฏ๐˜ต ๐˜ต๐˜ฐ ๐˜ฆ๐˜ฏ๐˜ซ๐˜ฐ๐˜บ ๐˜ต๐˜ฉ๐˜ฆ ๐˜ค๐˜ฐ๐˜ฏ๐˜ฏ๐˜ฆ๐˜ค๐˜ต๐˜ช๐˜ฐ๐˜ฏ ๐˜ต๐˜ฐ ๐˜ต๐˜ฉ๐˜ฆ ๐˜ง๐˜ถ๐˜ญ๐˜ญ๐˜ฆ๐˜ด๐˜ต ๐˜ข๐˜ฏ๐˜ฅ ๐˜ฐ๐˜ถ๐˜ณ ๐˜ฆ๐˜น๐˜ฑ๐˜ฆ๐˜ณ๐˜ช๐˜ฆ๐˜ฏ๐˜ค๐˜ฆ ๐˜ช๐˜ด ๐˜ต๐˜ฉ๐˜ข๐˜ต ๐˜ธ๐˜ฆ ๐˜ค๐˜ข๐˜ฏ'๐˜ต ๐˜ฅ๐˜ฐ ๐˜ต๐˜ฉ๐˜ข๐˜ต ๐˜ต๐˜ฉ๐˜ณ๐˜ฐ๐˜ถ๐˜จ๐˜ฉ ๐˜ฎ๐˜ฐ๐˜ฃ๐˜ช๐˜ญ๐˜ฆ ๐˜ด๐˜ค๐˜ณ๐˜ฆ๐˜ฆ๐˜ฏ๐˜ด.

I realized that this is exactly the Placebo that I love so much.
They could've made the no-phone ordinance two simple words. But they wrote the text so intimately that it couldn't be done more sensitively. That's why my decision was clear - my phone will stay in my pocket for the whole concert. In the end, there was no other option anyway, I was standing right in front of security and in Brian's line of sight.

Time passed, I bought two tickets and all I had to do was look forward to it. I hoped that Prague would be sold out, which it almost was. Just before the concert there were about thirty tickets left.

When D-day came, my first and thankfully only disappointment occurred๐Ÿ˜Š. When Katy and I were thinking about Halloween masks, she came across some very beautiful, subtle red glowing devil's horns in the mall. She managed to buy one last piece for me. But these horns were left forgotten at home and I decided to be maskless.

Katy and I really enjoyed the train ride and we were standing in front of the hall in Prague almost exactly at noon. We weren't the first ones, we got numbers 15 and 16 on our hands from the nice foreign fans, so we could freely leave the entrance to get a coffee. After all, it was 7 hours until the doors opened and we definitely wanted to be in the front row.

These guardian angels kept communicating with us, asking if we were feeling well, offering water. Of course, there were many times during the concert when they would pull out their flashlights to shine on fans trying to take video. I noticed that they weren't so strict on those who just took a quick photo. But on the other hand, they watched very carefully what was going on in the crowd to be able to help immediately.

Opening band DEADLETTER… I openly admit, they did not find the way to my heart. In the flood of grunge/punk style, after the third song I didn't know if I was listening to the first one over and over because the sound was very bad. But that's my very subjective opinion, I don't want to diminish the quality of the band that was chosen to support the rock legend.

As the time for Placebo approached, the atmosphere thickened and the hall was filled almost to capacity. Technicians in Halloween masks๐Ÿ˜Š were checking all the musical instruments were working properly, so it was something to watch and my heart was jumping with anticipation.
Of course, the whole time the text on the panels above the stage was lit up inviting us to keep our cell phones in our pockets. Everyone had plenty of time to realize what the band was trying to convey.
~๐Ÿ”น~๐Ÿ”น~๐Ÿ”น~

When the technicians disappeared from the stage, we began to call for the start of... We were showing that we couldn't wait any longer. The technical performance of the show was breathtaking. The videos projected on the panels were graphically very successful, I liked the fact that we don't see just ordinary shots from the stage, but that everything is thematically connected into one colourful psychedelic whole. First of all, ⭐๐€๐๐†๐„๐‹๐€ as Samara just came out of the well from the movie The Ring, absolutely brutal horror look, amazing masterpiece.

⭐๐Œ๐€๐“๐“ drummed the whole concert in a Pennywise mask, hats off to such a performance.

Big ⭐๐๐ˆ๐‚๐Š embodied the satanic princess, he looked very good in those lacy tights and a dress revealing a manly hairy chest. And

⭐๐Œ๐‘. ๐‹๐Ž๐˜๐ƒ as always modestly in the background, only his face turned green somehow, he didn't look very healthy, more like Frankenstein...

And although I didn't notice it when I arrived because I ran straight to the stage, even the sound guy's booth had Halloween decorations, which I'm sure amused many.

๐Ÿ—จ️ You Don’t Care About Us’ is directed towards me, written from the point of view of someone who I used to be in a relationship with. When you do that you’re fucked from day one basically, but that’s often the way I used to conduct my relationships. ๐Ÿ—จ️ Definitely. That is the way Brian writes his lyrics sometimes. Like the song "You Don't Care About Us". That is taken from the point of view of somebody talking to Brian. As opposed to him talking to somebody else, actually somebody is asking him, 'This relationship is going wrong. You don't care about us, man.' (laughs) But other people translate it like the kids are going to the adults, 'You don't care about us!' It's weird. They are all coming from all different angles. "My Sweet Prince" was a female friend of Brian's who just they were just kind of busting up and that was the last thing she wrote on his mirror in his bathroom before they split up. It is all real, but it can be from any direction really.

The demo version of "Teenage Angst" from 1995 includes the line “Well I was suicidal once / but now honestly I am fine“ which was replaced by “Airs and social graces / elocution so divine“ in the version that was finally released. I think the record label wasn't too happy about the lyrics dealing with suicide and so the song text had to be changed.

“Teenage Angst“ is part of the band's repertoire prior to the release of their debut album in 1996. It has been performed in notably different versions. It was played live 414 confirmed times over the years, and between 1995 and 2017 there was not one single year when it wasn't brought on stage at least once. The first time ever was on January 23rd 1995 at Rock Garden in London. This was also the very first Placebo concert. The last time “Teenage Angst“ was played live was on October 8th 2017 in Dundee, Scotland, during the “20 years“ anniversary tour.
The original version was staged up until 2000. A piano-based version was played during the “Black market music“, “Meds“ and „Battle for the sun“ tours.
During the „Sleeping with ghosts“ tour “Teenage Angst“ was played with a hip-hop inspired drum beat. At the end of the “Battle for the sun“ tour in 2010, the song was performed with a new arrangement. Another rework appeared during the “Loud like love“ tour.

๐Ÿ“ข “We kind of keep re-writing a lot of songs in order for them to become playable for us so that we can connect with them. Most recently, we’re on our fourth version of “Teenage Angst” from the first album. We have a brand new version of that, which is actually my favorite of the tour. It took 20 years since I wrote that song for us to settle on what I think is the definitive version, but that’s ok.“
(Pure Volume, September 12th 2013)

๐Ÿ“ข “When we do stuff from the first album, we try to do different versions. We have an interesting hip-hop version of 'Teenage Angst' at the moment. I am having a lot of fun with it, it gives me a chance to do my Bono bit with a wireless microphone. I am doing that more and more.”
(The Sentimentalist - Issue XII, 2003)

๐Ÿ“ข “That's the difference between "Teenage Angst" and the new version of the song, which has become very melancholic, which we transformed more and more to that during our tour. We want to explore the scope of our skills more and more and the tendency is towards melancholy. But we can say about ourselves today, when we go there, we really go in that direction, it's not playing around anymore, the emotions are real, we don't need to pretend to anything. When you see us on stage on our next tour, you really see us. That's Placebo.”

๐Ÿ“ข "When I was a teenager, I felt things in more passionate ways, I've gone through rebellion phases. I was feeling depressed, I felt like the world was about to collapse. A sort of alienation towards parents, a rebellion against what they wanted me to become, against growing, going through this kind of changes. My emotions were going in many directions because physically, I was becoming an adult. I was longing for it, but I was still dealt with as a child. Art and creativity were minor things, unknown in my familly. That's surely for that reason, I reacted so violently. I became the ugly duckling: my father wanted me to become a businessman, and my mother wanted me to be a saint. Finally, I satisfied none of them. At this age, music can represent many things, be the last emergency exit. Play guitar was a sort of outlet to my familly troubles, to authority. My parents didn't contribute at all to what I am today and that's marvellous. I am here today only by myself. I need to have success, very selfishly, to refute all people who thought I would not go far in life, to show it to the people who were better than me at school, my rivals in every way, my parents.”
(Les Inrocks, August 13th 1996)

๐Ÿ“ข "I've always been a loner. The three of us are like that, we have gone through adolescence locked in our room, playing music. And like many boys this age, I was dreaming to become a star. A city like Luxembourg can be stifling when you try to forge your identity. I couldn't be myself there. I felt secluded there, far from the places where I wanted to be. There was no place where I could have expressed myself, found a feedback. From this isolation, I made songs, 'Teenage Angst' or 'Burger Queen', because fatally that made me a voyeur. It's not the best place to observe the world.”
(Les Inrockuptibles N°169, August 14th 1998)

Shine the headlight,
Straight into my eyes.
Like the roadkill,
I'm paralysed.
You see through my disguise

At the drive-in,
Double feature,
Pull the lever,
Break the fever
And say your last goodbyes.

Since I was born
I started to decay
Now nothing ever
Ever goes my way

One fluid gesture,
Like stepping back in time
Trapped in amber, petrified
I’m still not satisfied

Airs and social graces,
Elocution so divine
I’ll stick to my needle
And my favourite waste of time
Both spineless and sublime

Since I was born
I started to decay
Now nothing ever
Ever goes my way

๐ŸŽธ Much more than just an additional musician, Bill is an important person in the Placebo universe, as are many other people around the band. Although he was only mentioned on the Black Market Music album for his participation in the track Peeping Tom, Bill's presence with Brian and Stefan is much older.

๐ŸŽธ Today, I want to share an interview he did before the release of Loud Like Love where he talks a bit about his role in Placebo, his meeting with Brian and Stefan. 'Jack of all trades', as he calls himself, has more than one trick up his sleeve !

๐ŸŽธ Stefan and Brian have a talent for surrounding themselves with exceptional people !

This song is the opening track on Placebo's eight studio album “Never let me go”, released on March 25th 2022. It was actually also the song their work on that record started with in 2016. Brian and Stefan were in the studio and Brian programmed the beat on a drum machine. On this device he was able to change it and put it on to any orchestra instrument. “So I put the drum beat on a harp and I distorted it and put some delay on it. And then you've got that loop from 'Forever Chemicals' that opens the album, and it's kind of cool [...]”, Brian explained in an interview. Stefan summarized it as an example of a “happy accident that happened in the studio” (see quotes below).

Initially the song was planned to be about police brutality. Brian tried to put himself into the mind of somebody who had lost a loved one, but several people warned him to deal with this topic. Brian: “And I'm kind of glad they did because it forced me to go into sort of a more ambiguous territory with 'Forever Chemicals'. What it's actually about, I think, is that it is up to the listener” (Maniacs, March 25th 2022).
Stefan described the track as the key point of “Never let me go” and a song with a lot of emotion in it. In his opinion it's “a great way to start off the album”(Billboard Japan, April 2022).

“Forever Chemicals” was recorded at RAK Studios in London and produced by Adam Noble. It was written by Brian, Stefan and Steve Ludwin, who is also the co-writer of Placebo's “Ashtray heart” from the album “Battle for the sun” and “Hypnotized by Jane”, a song Brian and him wrote for the German band Cinema Bizarre. Both tracks were done together with American singer-songwriter Jordan Page on a vacatation in Nicaragua.

Interesting fact: Ludwin, a “semi-retired punk musician”, (Business Insider, 2021) from Connecticut who lives in London since the 80ies is not well-known for his music but (in)famous for injecting himself with potentially deadly snake venom. He does this since 30 years, first for the supposed anti-aging effect and then also for medical research. Sounds quite crazy, doesn't it?

Another interesting fact is the origin of the song title. PFAS (Per- and polyfluorinated alkyl substances) are often called Forever Chemicals because they hardly degrade in the natural environment and are very mobile in water, which means that they remain intact for a very long time and can be transported over long distances. PFAS are the most persistent synthetic chemicals and have been found in the blood and breastmilk of people and wildlife all around the world. The substances can be toxic.
Well, when I read the title “Forever Chemicals” that surely was not what came to mind first related to Placebo. But it perfectly fits with the theme of the album.

The shared live performance of the song was recorded at Milton Keynes, UK, on May 19th 2022. It was one of three shows that Placebo opened for My Chemical Romance (isn't the band name a strange and fitting coincidence too?) before they started their own current “Never let me go” tour.

๐Ÿ“ข “There was something about that loop which was a real statement of intent. It’s melodic and it’s catchy, but it’s also a bit brutal. It was a ‘start as you mean to go on’ moment for us.”
(Rolling Stone UK, February 1st 2022)

๐Ÿ“ข “Well, 'Forever Chemicals' was probably the first track on the album that we started working on, and that's probably why it's the first. In around 2016, I was sat in my studio with Stef, on the iPad, I had this drum machine, and I quickly programmed the beat, just like that. Then I realised that you could take that beat with this drum machine and put it on to any instrument from an orchestra. So I put the drum beat on a harp and I distorted it and put some delay on it. And then you've got that loop from 'Forever Chemicals' that opens the album, and it's kind of cool because it was sort of slightly reminiscent of 'Infra-Red', but more brutal kind of a statement of intent sonically, for the record, to kind of start with that and 'Forever Chemicals' is one of the songs that I rewrote over and over and over again lyrically. It started off as a song about police brutality and I tried to put myself in the heart and soul of somebody who had lost someone, uh, who'd been murdered by the police, then as I spoke to more people I was I was kind of advised not really to go there and I wondered if I was going to be inviting a great deal of aggro into my life. And I'm kind of glad they did because it forced me to go into sort of a more ambiguous territory with 'Forever Chemicals'. What it's actually about, I think, is that it is up to the listener.”

๐Ÿ“ข “The song 'Forever Chemicals', with its harp loop and distortion, is an example of a happy accident that happened in the studio. Our album opens with this strange-sounding song to surprise the fans as they surprised us.”

๐Ÿ“ข “I would have to say "Forever Chemicals" at the beginning of the album. It was the first song we worked on for the album, and it starts out as a weird drum loop I had on my tablet, but I had a lot of trouble finishing it. It's a song with a lot of emotion and it's a great way to start off the album.”
(Billboard Japan, April 2022)

๐Ÿ“ข “A lot of times things don't work the way they should work. You turn on a device and it doesn't sound like it used to, and sometimes you don't know why. Or you don't have the login, or things like that. On that track the sound that opens the song was at first a drum machine, but somehow it changed to the sound of a harp and that really caught our attention and we thought it was a much more interesting sound. So we put it on a distortion machine (you know a lot of times the industrial sound comes from distortion, from a signal that's too hot and too saturated), because we've always really liked that kind of sound and our guitars are often distorted. Thus, that harp seemed to us the perfect way to start the album. We also like, speaking of equipment, to put together things that shouldn't be connected in principle (laughs). For example, a pedal board that goes to a guitar, but instead of putting everything in the right order we put it backwards. Or plugging a keyboard directly into the speaker. That kind of experimentation has always pleased us. I think since the third album we started using the studio more as part of the process of making an album.”

The memory drugs make memory snow
I think but I forget
My imagination doesn't know where to go
So it goes to sleep instead

The memory tapes of memory fucking
Fill me with regret
Now my memory shapes forgot their own names
And I can't get out of bed, shit

My memory body, my memory skin
I wanna kiss your pretty face
The memory drugs are a discipline
So I can know and keep my place

And it's all good, when nothing matters
It's all good, when no one cares
It's all good, when I feel nothing
It's all good, when I'm not there

And with friends like you (oh), who needs enemies?
And with friends like you (oh), who needs enemies?
With friends like you (oh), who needs enemies?
Friends like you

And it's all good, when nothing matters
It's all good, when no one cares
It's all good, when I feel nothing
It's all good, when I'm not there
