🔷 Knowing that 𝑵𝒐𝒍𝒂'𝒔 𝑲𝒆𝒚 approaches his creations in a philosophical way, it is very interesting to note the "meaning of life" side he has given to this sound montage. The selected sentences ask questions about loneliness and emotional dependence, learning life lessons from mistakes, but moving on regardless. 𝑩𝒓𝒊𝒂𝒏 has often stated in interviews his insecurities and lack of self-confidence, which he compensates for on stage or transfers into his often cathartic lyrics.

💬 I invented a character very confident, brash, yelling - that was an exaggeration of myself. A circus freak and a party freak... It is a way to stop feeling anything, to deceive my lack of confidence, the hate of myself... And also part ways with a chronic depression that follows me since adolescence. Because if I could speak through songs, I was unable to do it everyday...

German DJ, producer and remixer 🎈𝗧𝗜𝗠𝗢 𝗠𝗔𝗔𝗦 🎈 was born on July 27th 1969.
Timo bought his first set of turntables when he was 17 years old and played his very first DJ set in 1982 at a party at a friend's home. In 1992 he started to Dj in the European rave scene, earning a name in the electronic underground world. Maas' first record "The Final XS" was released in 1995.
Up to now he has released three albums and almost 50 singles and EPs. His songs appear on more than 380 music compilations and he is credited on about 800 remixes.
Over the years Maas has collaborated with and remixed many artists such as 𝗗𝗲𝗽𝗲𝗰𝗵𝗲 𝗠𝗼𝗱𝗲, 𝗣𝗮𝘂𝗹 𝗠𝗰𝗖𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗻𝗲𝘆, 𝗠𝗮𝗱𝗼𝗻𝗻𝗮, 𝗧𝗼𝗿𝗶 𝗔𝗺𝗼𝘀, 𝗠𝗼𝗯𝘆, 𝗙𝗮𝘁𝗯𝗼𝘆 𝗦𝗹𝗶𝗺, 𝗚𝗮𝗿𝗯𝗮𝗴𝗲, 𝗝𝗮𝗺𝗶𝗿𝗼𝗾𝘂𝗮𝗶, 𝗠𝘂𝘀𝗲, 𝗗𝗶𝗴𝗶𝘁𝗮𝗹 𝟮𝟭 and of course 𝗣𝗟𝗔𝗖𝗘𝗕𝗢. Since 2008 he runs his own record label Rockets & Ponies.

Timo Maas is also a resident at the legendary 𝐈𝐛𝐢𝐳𝐚 𝐧𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭𝐜𝐥𝐮𝐛 𝐃𝐂𝟏𝟎, where he invited Brian to a joint DJ party 𝐈𝐃𝐎𝐋 in 2018. The photos from this iconic dance party are some of my favorites.

So how did it actually happen ??
In 1999, the Placebo tour with the WYIN album included a spring stop in Australia. And on that occasion, the guys received a suggestion that they could be support for the Australian rock band Silverchair in August.

Silverchair is one of Australia's most famous alternative bands.
All three of its members were born in 1979. So they were much younger than our Placebo guys. But imagine that:
„Singer/guitarist Daniel Johns, bassist Chris Joannou, and drummer Ben Gillies were all 12 when they started their band, originally named Innocent Criminals, and were 15 when they wrote “Tomorrow,” the anthemic song that kickstarted their career. While many legendary bands formed as adolescent school chums, from U2 to Radiohead, Silverchair got a record deal and stormed the charts while they were still kids, a rarity for a rock band that wrote and played their own songs.“

The boys changed the band's name to "Silverchair" in 1994.
Their sound, of course, copied the grunge musical style, thanks to which the record companies were looking for bands with a similar sound to Nirvana or Pearl Jam. And Silverchair's initial work was reminiscent of exactly these bands.
Here it is necessary to realize that the youngsters from Silverchair completed their high school studies during the first two tours.
Their fame rose sharply. This stress was then gradually attributed to the singer Daniel Johns, who began to suffer from depression, eating disorders and subsequently severe reactive arthritis.
These health problems prevented him from touring in support of their fourth album, Diorama, which was released in 2001.
According to Rolling Stone magazine in its four and a half star review, the album was “one of the boldest musical statements ever made by an Australian rock band”.


I dare say that the culmination of their rock career was a performance at Rock in Rio in 2001, where they played for 250,000 people!
The next fifth album also had very good reviews, and again, like all previous albums, ranked number one in the Australian charts. However, apart from a few always sold-out concerts in different parts of the world, no other tour took place. In 2011, Silverchair announced the introduction of their band into "indefinite hibernation".
Daniel Johns continues to work on his music projects.


But let's go back to the remix.

Daniel Johns' "accidental" side project with Paul Mac has already yielded a five song EP of original material called "I Can't Believe It's Not Rock". We can now exclusively reveal that the duo has just completed another studio collaboration, remixing "Slave To The Wage" by UK band, Placebo.
It is not the first time that Daniel Johns and Placebo have crossed paths. silverchair has shared stages with the UK outfit at numerous European festivals and in August 1999 they brought them out to Australia as special guests on their Neon Ballroom tour.
Daniel and Paul created the remix in their home studios - the same locations used for the I Can't Believe It's Not Rock EP. While the original version of the track was very upbeat, the Johns/Mac version twists the tune into a dark, gothic hymn. It's called "Slave To The Wage (I Can't Believe It's A Remix)" and it will appear as a bonus track on a new Placebo CD single which is to be released in Australia in January.
…/.../ However, this is the first time that Daniel Johns has ever been involved in remixing another artist's music. While he doesn't plan to make a habit of such work he reportedly enjoyed this unusual challenge.“

„Amidst a wall of recorded music, Placebo took the stage and delivered a full length set that would end up going as long if not longer than silverchair's own set. If you are a fan of Placebo, you would have liked the set, it's as simple as that. They came across as more of a hard rocking band than the massively aired singles would have you believe. The mix didn't quite allow the expression in the vocals to shine through, but it was a competent set, and they were playing to more than the odd person that was at the concert specifically to see them."

This post today was created as if by complete coincidence. That evening I watched one of the many Placebo gigs on YT (you will find a link to it at the end of the post) and noticed an intro that intrigued me.

So before we talk about it, check out the video I share with you.

What is actually interesting about this input track?
It's a brilliant and magical mashup of two songs:
"𝐏𝐮𝐫𝐞 𝐌𝐨𝐫𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠" 𝐛𝐲 𝐏𝐥𝐚𝐜𝐞𝐛𝐨 and "𝐒𝐯𝐞𝐟𝐧-𝐠-𝐞𝐧𝐠𝐥𝐚𝐫" 𝐛𝐲 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐈𝐜𝐞𝐥𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐢𝐜 𝐛𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐒𝐢𝐠𝐮𝐫 𝐑𝐨𝐬 which we often talk about here on this page.
Placebo love the music of Sigur Ros and there is a friendly relationship between the guys.


⭐"Svefn-g-englar" was released as a single in 1999. The title of the song is an Icelandic pun mixing "sleepwalkers" and "sleep angels").
It is basically one of the most famous songs of the band Sigur Ros which made the band famous beyond the borders of Iceland.⭐

I don't know who created this perfection that he combined two such different songs ... I didn't find the author. However, I always believe that this information will reach me sooner or later.
Anyway, the Placebo guys definitely know that very well and this mashup enchanted them so much that they used it as their intro during the Loud Like Love Tour and paid tribute to their Icelandic friends.


⭐ Interestingly, although the LLL tour lasted three years - from 2013 to 2015, this intro was not used for the entire tour. It is very difficult to find accurate information, but according to the setlist archive, it is certain that those of you who were at the concert in 2015, were lucky enough to listen to this mashup.

This intro was also experienced by fans who were on the American part of the LLL tour. It is clear that this remix was definitely used more often than the setlist archive states.
So even though I've calculated from everything available on the Internet that Placebo used this intro 44 times, I don't think this number is definitely accurate.
But for the remaining concerts of the entire LLL tour, the intro song B3 was used, during which the band entered the stage and started the show with this song.

Well, I decided to reveal, as much as possible, the history of this whole event, which was quite important for the Czech alternative music scene.
So at first, very short info about the band which is still surrounded by a very special fluid, and although they have not released any new albums for a long time, and they perform very rarely, even so, each of their concerts is hopelessly sold out in advance.
🔸⭐🔸
The band 𝐄𝐜𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐬𝐲 𝐨𝐟 𝐒𝐭.𝐓𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐚 (𝐄𝐎𝐒𝐓) was formed in 1990 and has since changed their line-up twice. But one important name is in their work from the beginning.
🔸𝐉𝐚𝐧 𝐏. 𝐌𝐮𝐜𝐡𝐨𝐰, the leading character of the band, is today a sought-after Czech producer and remixer, who also succeeded as an author of film and theater music.


After several personnel changes, he has been accompanied in the band since 1997 by the unique actress and singer 🔸𝐊𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐫̌𝐢𝐧𝐚 𝐖𝐢𝐧𝐭𝐫𝐨𝐯𝐚́.
The band EOST has never (at least as far as I know) officially disbanded. Both musicians are good friends and their children go to the same school.


EOST is an exceptional band. They gained the position of a cult group mainly with strong emotional music open to various influences. From the original fascination with the sound of English indie-guitar formations, it has developed into a distinctive, instinctive music that crosses the musical spectrum.
As one of the few Czech bands, EOST managed to establish themselves abroad. In England, they released three records and scored on the independent charts,
𝐫𝐞𝐜𝐨𝐫𝐝𝐞𝐝 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐟𝐚𝐦𝐨𝐮𝐬 𝐁𝐁𝐂 𝐬𝐡𝐨𝐰 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐥𝐞𝐠𝐞𝐧𝐝𝐚𝐫𝐲 𝐭𝐚𝐥𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐬𝐜𝐨𝐮𝐭 𝐉𝐨𝐡𝐧 𝐏𝐞𝐞𝐥, and gave concerts in the USA. So far, no Czech band has had such success.

⭐And here we come to what mainly interests Placebo rock fans.⭐
How did the band from such a small country in Central Europe get into the awareness of the famous Placebo?


In mid-August 2002, the band EOST, through the recording company Labels UK, introduced their musical novelty - LP 🔸𝐒𝐥𝐨𝐰𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐠, and the recordings immediately gained their listeners.
𝐹𝑎𝑣𝑜𝑟𝑎𝑏𝑙𝑒 𝑟𝑒𝑣𝑖𝑒𝑤𝑠 ℎ𝑎𝑣𝑒 𝑎𝑝𝑝𝑒𝑎𝑟𝑒𝑑 𝑖𝑛 𝑚𝑢𝑠𝑖𝑐 𝑚𝑎𝑔𝑎𝑧𝑖𝑛𝑒𝑠 𝑀𝑜𝑗𝑜, 𝑊𝑖𝑟𝑒, 𝑈𝑛𝑐𝑢𝑡 𝑀𝑢𝑠𝑖𝑐 𝑊𝑒𝑒𝑘, 𝑤ℎ𝑖𝑐ℎ 𝑖𝑠 𝑤𝑎𝑡𝑐ℎ𝑒𝑑 𝑏𝑦 𝑎 𝑙𝑎𝑟𝑔𝑒 𝑝𝑎𝑟𝑡 𝑜𝑓 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑚𝑢𝑠𝑖𝑐 𝑐𝑜𝑚𝑚𝑢𝑛𝑖𝑡𝑦 𝑖𝑛 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑖𝑠𝑙𝑎𝑛𝑑𝑠.

After the concert, they invited us to the backstage for a drink, they said how they liked our record, and it was there that we were offered to do a remix of the song English Summer Rain, which was then released as a single."

𝑲𝑾: Maybe the one with Placebo was divine, the boys were in a good mood.
𝑱𝑷𝑴: The important thing was that they wanted us themselves - singer Brian Molko bought our album Slowthinking in England, which he liked. Do you remember watching the whole concert from the edge of the stage?
𝑲𝑾: I was looking at the audience. There were the girls with the crowns on their heads, Placebo fans, but they warmly supported us then. Really nice concert.
𝑱𝑷𝑴: I was excited too, until I noticed Molko watching us, it scared me… But then it was nice of Placebo to invite us to the backstage. I will not forget how they stood there - Brian Molko with his meter fifty and bassist Stefan measuring two meters ten. Great two!
𝑲𝑾: We were nervous about what we would bring them, but fortunately we found band T-shirts that said "I‘m (not really) optimistic". So we gave it to them, they yawned, "Yeah, thanks," and threw the T-shirts in the corner, "Would you like a drink?"

📌When Placebo performed in Prague in the autumn of 2003, EOST performed with them at the express request of the singer Brian Molko. And the fact that Molko really liked the couple is also evidenced by the offer to remix English Summer Rain, which came right away.
"Placebo came up with a very advantageous offer," explains Jan P. Muchow. "They sent us nine CDs full of tracks with their song and they wanted to get back only one CD from us.
The tracks were supposed to be mixed together.
With simple Japanese software, we had one ninth of a song randomly selected from each of their CDs, and then, according to Čapek's instructions on the dog and cat (according to the very famous fairy tale book About a Dog and a Cat by Karel Čapek), we somehow unified it in the final track."
