Today Steven Patrick Morrissey, better known as MORRISSEY, celebrates his birthday.
He is an English singer, songwriter and author who was born 62 years ago today on May 22nd 1959 in Lancashire, UK. In the 80ies he was the lead singer and frontman of the legendary alternative rock band The Smiths.

Most Placebo fans know „Bigmouth strikes again“ by The Smiths because the band covered it in 1997 and used it as b-side for their single „Nancy Boy“. As far as I could find out Placebo played the song live only once during a concert at Civic Hall in Wolverhampton, England, on February 17th 1997.

But there's another reason why we should know Morrissey, and this one is more important than the cover version. It has to do with Placebo's friend and mentor David Bowie: When he was touring with his album “Outside“ in 1995/1996 Morrissey was booked as his support act. But for unknown reasons he suddenly quit. David and Placebo had the same booking agent, who suggested to engage the newcomer band for some of the remaining shows. To play before Bowie helped Placebo to gain the attention of a lot of people they wouldn't have reached without him at that time. I think we could say that Morrissey accidentally pushed Placebo's career. So thank you, Morrissey!

Morrissey is an English singer, songwriter and author. He came to prominence as the frontman of the band The Smiths (active from 1982 to 1987). Since then he has pursued a successful solo career. Morrissey's music is characterised by his baritone voice and distinctive lyrics with recurring themes of emotional isolation, sexual longing, self-deprecating and black humour, as well as anti-establishment stances.

๐ข ”The story is that we have Morrissey to thank for this actually. So what happened was that David Bowie was touring his 'Outside' album around Europe and Morrissey was supporting him. And one day in Italy Morrissey, without telling his band, without telling his tour manager, took the tour bus and drove it all the way home to see his mother in England. So when everyone woke up in the morning the band asked, “Where’s Morrissey?” and David Bowie is going, “Where’s my support band?” And as luck had it, David Bowie and Placebo had the same booking agent and the booking agent said to Bowie, “Well, I have this demo of this new band that you might like.” This was before we had recorded our first album. So David Bowie heard our demo and on the strength of that alone he called up and said, “Hey, come and support me on my tour.” So Placebo went from playing shows in front of 300 people in a Pub in London to playing in front of 8,000 people in Italy. So it was like, “Holy Shit, we’ve jumped into the deep end and we’re crossing paths with David Bowie back stage.” [laughs].

๐ข "Last year we had been signed for about a month and we hadn't recorded our album yet and Morrissey pulled out of the Bowie European tour, he sort of disappeared for some reason. Through connections that we had through our agent we sent him a demo and he heard it and decided we were the band to fill Morrissey's place. Which is quite amazing really, we were quite shocked and we went on tour with Bowie in Europe, and a few months later we did it again and that kind of cemented our friendship really."
