🎸 Much more than just an additional musician, Bill is an important person in the Placebo universe, as are many other people around the band. Although he was only mentioned on the Black Market Music album for his participation in the track Peeping Tom, Bill's presence with Brian and Stefan is much older.

🎸 Today, I want to share an interview he did before the release of Loud Like Love where he talks a bit about his role in Placebo, his meeting with Brian and Stefan. 'Jack of all trades', as he calls himself, has more than one trick up his sleeve !

🗨️ It's a long story but I was playing with my Croydon band, 𝙁𝙖𝙞𝙩𝙝 𝙊𝙫𝙚𝙧 𝙍𝙚𝙖𝙨𝙤𝙣, and we were supporting 𝙅𝙚𝙛𝙛 𝘽𝙪𝙘𝙠𝙡𝙚𝙮 𝙖𝙩 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙀𝙙𝙞𝙣𝙗𝙪𝙧𝙜𝙝 𝙛𝙚𝙨𝙩𝙞𝙫𝙖𝙡 and 𝘽𝙧𝙞𝙖𝙣 𝙛𝙧𝙤𝙢 𝙋𝙡𝙖𝙘𝙚𝙗𝙤 happened to be in a play up there and we met him in a bar and our guitarist knew him and we got chatting with him and he asked me to send him some demo tapes and it started from there.

💬 𝑫𝒊𝒅 𝒚𝒐𝒖 𝒎𝒆𝒆𝒕 𝑱𝒆𝒇𝒇 𝑩𝒖𝒄𝒌𝒍𝒆𝒚 𝒕𝒉𝒆𝒏 ?
🗨️ Oh yes. I used to drive him around when he first came to England, in the back of my van.

🗨️ My main job now is studio work, so when they've recorded an album I'm in there with them full time, doing a bit of teching, some programming and a bit of playing. I guide the baselines and do some keyboard work. Before a tour I have to program everything for the studio for the live show, and then on tour I just play bass and keyboards. It's a full time job.

🗨️ Well, I think the band wanted to be a three-piece, and they asked me to play and I probably didn't look quite as androgynous as them so I started playing off-stage. Then they said "this is silly, forget about it, come on stage". But I'm still in the background and I like it that way. I don't like to be at the front. It doesn't suit my demeanour.

🗨️ We have a gig in Korea which is a bit scary. And one in Turkey again, we are doing a couple of festivals, end of October until December. We're going to do loads more next year.

Sleeping with Ghosts because I felt really involved in that one and I liked the tracks and the electronic edge. And the new one, it's fantastic. It's as good as those two.

🟠🎊Placebo's seventh studio album 𝐋𝐎𝐔𝐃 𝐋𝐈𝐊𝐄 𝐋𝐎𝐕𝐄 was released nine years ago today, on September 13th, 2013🎊🟠
What this album is? A collection of ten songs, started with a super powerful and hopeful love anthem in 𝐋𝐨𝐮𝐝 𝐋𝐢𝐤𝐞 𝐋𝐨𝐯𝐞 and closed with the deepest of heartbreak and regret in 𝐁𝐨𝐬𝐜𝐨, with a full spectrum of emotions which can accompany a relationship, in between.
📢𝐁𝐫𝐢𝐚𝐧: “It’s ten songs long, about 46 minutes and it’s very much sequenced like an old vinyl record – it definitely has a side A and side B. I guess it’s Placebo’s very personal take and exploration on the most written about subject in the history of popular song. For me, I kind of see it as a collection of ten short stories with a unifying theme that approaches the subject from ten different angles. It explores how love can be violent, brutal, and disorientating, and how the absence of it can lead people to behave in quite extreme ways. It also deals with jealousy, obsession, heartbreak and how addiction can tear relationships apart. So, it’s an album about people and the way that they interact with each other – or fail to.”

🟠𝐋𝐎𝐔𝐃 𝐋𝐈𝐊𝐄 𝐋𝐎𝐕𝐄 was recorded at RAK Studios in London and produced by Adam Noble. It reached no. 13 in the UK Albums Chart.
Three singles were released from the album: 𝐓𝐨𝐨 𝐌𝐚𝐧𝐲 𝐅𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐝𝐬, 𝐋𝐨𝐮𝐝 𝐋𝐢𝐤𝐞 𝐋𝐨𝐯𝐞, and 𝐀 𝐌𝐢𝐥𝐥𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐋𝐢𝐭𝐭𝐥𝐞 𝐏𝐢𝐞𝐜𝐞𝐬.

🟠The whole concept of the 𝑨𝑹𝑻𝑾𝑶𝑹𝑲, including the cover, was created by 𝑱𝒖𝒍𝒊𝒂𝒏 𝑯𝒐𝒖𝒔𝒆 of 𝑰𝑵𝑻𝑹𝑶 𝑫𝒆𝒔𝒊𝒈𝒏 𝑺𝒕𝒖𝒅𝒊𝒐 while 𝑱𝒐𝒔𝒆𝒑𝒉 𝑳𝒍𝒂𝒏𝒆𝒔 worked on photography for the promotional campaign.

🟠The album was available in different formats: 𝐂𝐃, 𝐝𝐞𝐥𝐮𝐱𝐞 𝐂𝐃 𝐝𝐢𝐠𝐢𝐩𝐚𝐜𝐤 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐃𝐕𝐃 𝐋𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐚𝐭 𝐑𝐀𝐊 𝐒𝐭𝐮𝐝𝐢𝐨𝐬, 𝐛𝐨𝐱 𝐬𝐞𝐭, and 𝟏𝟐" 𝐯𝐢𝐧𝐲𝐥, which was released three days later, on September 16th.
The Chinese version of the album contains – instead of 𝐑𝐨𝐛 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐁𝐚𝐧𝐤 – the song 𝐏𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐏𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐲 (𝐨𝐟 𝐎𝐧𝐞) that is also included in the box set as a bonus track.

🟠To celebrate Loud Like Love's release, Placebo’s crew came up with the idea of online TV show. On September 16th, 2013, the day when LLL was fully released worldwide in all its formats, 90-minute live show titled 𝐋𝐎𝐔𝐃 𝐋𝐈𝐊𝐄 𝐋𝐎𝐕𝐄 𝐓𝐕 was streamed live globally from three YouTube Studios, in 𝐋𝐨𝐧𝐝𝐨𝐧, 𝐓𝐨𝐤𝐲𝐨, and 𝐋𝐀. It was the first YouTube live stream of its kind.
The show featured, among other unique moments, Placebo performing songs from the album and some older songs (partly chosen by the audience through online poll), band interviews and guest appearances by people who collaborated with Placebo on the making of the album.

📢𝐁𝐫𝐢𝐚𝐧: “It is love, but this being Placebo World, it’s not gonna be a collection of love songs in Michael Bublé style. My experience with love, over the past 20 years, is what I’ve pulled on to write these novellas or small fictions. It hasn’t always been about the initial rush of infatuation and that feeling of elation and euphoria that comes with falling in love. Of course, I’ve experienced that, and it’s been quite mind-blowing, but sometimes you could fall in love with somebody who doesn’t know you exist or doesn’t see you that way, or doesn’t even find you attractive, and that can be quite heartbreaking. You can force somebody to leave—inadvertently—out of selfishness or behavior. Often, the absence of love is quite loud... as in the echo or the reverb of an empty cave, the sound of silence, or the sound of your own breathing.

📢𝐁𝐫𝐢𝐚𝐧: We wrote the first track on the album, "Loud Like Love," and the last one, "Bosco," at exactly the same time. They couldn't sound more different. They're basically polar opposites. "Loud Like Love" in its recorded version is a very optimistic and upbeat, enthusiastic song about unity and togetherness. "Bosco" is quite a sad story about a relationship that's been torn apart by addiction.

🟠It’s interesting that some of the songs were originally written by Brian for his 𝒑𝒐𝒔𝒔𝒊𝒃𝒍𝒆 𝒔𝒐𝒍𝒐 𝒑𝒓𝒐𝒋𝒆𝒄𝒕 which he was thinking about back at the time.

📢𝐁𝐫𝐢𝐚𝐧: I was working on some songs in my home studio or “garden shed”- every man needs a garden shed – and I was trying to write songs for me, without worrying about it having to be at a certain standard for the band. So I was playing acoustic guitars and piano and the only rule I had was that I could use regular guitars but I couldn’t use any distortion. It helped me write in a different way. For example, [new song] ‘Scene Of The Crime’ started with an oboe sample I found on the Internet – I just found it completely wild and started writing the song around it.

Then, the band went to the studio to record some singles, but they got so much inspired that - a bit unexpectedly for themselves - started working on a full record.

📢𝐒𝐭𝐞𝐟𝐚𝐧: For this record the hook that got me back in was when we all got together and wrote the title track [Loud Like Love]. It's the track that got us all excited.

📢𝐒𝐭𝐞𝐟𝐚𝐧: “I think it’s a combination of styles and leanings. […] We were finally ready to explore all these emotions and soundscapes and we felt we could do them with confidence and ease, something we couldn’t necessarily do in the past. I think everything we’ve been through has made us stronger, you know, 𝒎𝒆 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝑩𝒓𝒊𝒂𝒏 𝒉𝒂𝒗𝒆 𝒃𝒆𝒆𝒏 𝒕𝒐𝒈𝒆𝒕𝒉𝒆𝒓 𝒇𝒐𝒓 𝒕𝒘𝒆𝒏𝒕𝒚 𝒚𝒆𝒂𝒓𝒔 𝒏𝒐𝒘.”

✨Time flies, and soon, Brian and Stefan can talk of 𝒃𝒆𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒕𝒐𝒈𝒆𝒕𝒉𝒆𝒓 𝒇𝒐𝒓 𝒕𝒉𝒊𝒓𝒕𝒚 𝒚𝒆𝒂𝒓𝒔… And 𝐍𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐫 𝐋𝐞𝐭 𝐌𝐞 𝐆𝐨 has been born of their life experiences from the latest decade… But all the strongest emotions represented in 𝐋𝐎𝐔𝐃 𝐋𝐈𝐊𝐄 𝐋𝐎𝐕𝐄 are timeless so they will stay relevant and touch people’s souls for decades to come.

𝘏𝘦𝘭𝘭𝘰, 𝘴𝘰𝘶𝘭𝘮𝘢𝘵𝘦𝘴!
It's time to share with you a 𝑷𝒍𝒂𝒄𝒆𝒃𝒐 𝒊𝒏𝒕𝒆𝒓𝒗𝒊𝒆𝒘 that I found and that I don't remember having read before. It was published on the 𝑭𝒓𝒆𝒏𝒄𝒉 site 𝟐𝟎 𝑴𝒊𝒏𝒖𝒕𝒆𝒔 on the same day their seventh album "𝑳𝒐𝒖𝒅 𝑳𝒊𝒌𝒆 𝑳𝒐𝒗𝒆" was released (September 16, 2013); and although it is a short interview, it has a mix of emotions because it starts a bit tense, but it also has a funny and a reflective part. We can't stand each other but we know each other so well that being together is also very comfortable at times, and very strong at others.

𝓑𝓻𝓲𝓪𝓷: You know it's standard: we record, we release the album, we tour for two years all over the world. We still took six months off before we started working on a new album... Except instead of taking six months to do it, it took eleven.


💦 𝑾𝒉𝒚 𝒅𝒊𝒅 𝒊𝒕 𝒕𝒂𝒌𝒆 𝒔𝒐 𝒍𝒐𝒏𝒈 ? 𝑾𝒂𝒔 𝒊𝒕 𝒅𝒊𝒇𝒇𝒊𝒄𝒖𝒍𝒕 ?
𝓑𝓻𝓲𝓪𝓷: The music not so much, but the lyrics, that was harder for me. I'm getting more and more stringent with myself, from a quality point of view. I don't want to repeat myself, even if it's inevitable, because we have a very strong style but we're always looking for a new meaning, a new way to approach our identity. We threw away a lot more in this album, even melodies that we really liked but that weren't fresh enough. You have to learn to throw away gracefully, not to be precious.
𝓢𝓽𝓮𝓯𝓪𝓷: With six albums, it's always hard not to repeat yourself, sometimes I would come up with melodies, think it's really good, and then it would sound like something we've done before.


💦 𝑾𝒊𝒕𝒉 𝒔𝒊𝒙 𝒂𝒍𝒃𝒖𝒎𝒔, 𝒘𝒓𝒊𝒕𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒏𝒆𝒘 𝒎𝒂𝒕𝒆𝒓𝒊𝒂𝒍 𝒔𝒉𝒐𝒖𝒍𝒅 𝒃𝒆 𝒆𝒂𝒔𝒊𝒆𝒓 ?
𝓑𝓻𝓲𝓪𝓷: No, quite the opposite. Because we want to evolve, to get better. If we were a career band, we would have made a lot of songs that sounded like our biggest hits, but we're not interested in that, even though we think that's what some factions of our fanbase would want. We make music to enjoy ourselves and then we hope that other people enjoy listening to us. If we don't enjoy it, it becomes mechanical and soulless... and boring.


💦 𝑫𝒐 𝒚𝒐𝒖 𝒕𝒉𝒊𝒏𝒌 𝒂𝒃𝒐𝒖𝒕 𝒘𝒉𝒂𝒕 𝒚𝒐𝒖𝒓 𝒇𝒂𝒏𝒔 𝒎𝒊𝒈𝒉𝒕 𝒕𝒉𝒊𝒏𝒌 𝒐𝒇 𝒚𝒐𝒖𝒓 𝒔𝒐𝒏𝒈𝒔 𝒘𝒉𝒆𝒏 𝒚𝒐𝒖 𝒘𝒓𝒊𝒕𝒆 𝒕𝒉𝒆𝒎 ?
𝓢𝓽𝓮𝓯𝓪𝓷: If you start to make someone want to please you never reach your goal because you have no emotional conviction. Music is such a personal thing. When we compose, we don't think about the fans, we have to like the songs ourselves first. We also think that we create songs that we're going to play on stage for two years or more, if we don't believe in them a little bit, it's suicide.
𝓑𝓻𝓲𝓪𝓷: We actually enjoy confusing our fans !

𝓑𝓻𝓲𝓪𝓷: Universally, the album has been well received so far. It's proof that if you really do something with passion, it shows and it's heard. And the fans recognize that this album was made with a lot of love.


💦 𝑳𝒐𝒗𝒆 𝒊𝒔 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒐𝒎𝒏𝒊𝒑𝒓𝒆𝒔𝒆𝒏𝒕 𝒕𝒉𝒆𝒎𝒆 𝒐𝒇 𝒕𝒉𝒊𝒔 𝒏𝒆𝒘 𝒂𝒍𝒃𝒖𝒎...
𝓑𝓻𝓲𝓪𝓷: Love is drug... but it's also an addiction, there are people who suffer from it. Addiction to love and sex is completely different from addiction to alcohol or drugs, but it's something that exists... But we didn't choose a theme for writing this album... It's the creative process itself that dictates that and that becomes the source of inspiration. We create the music instinctively. It's only afterwards that you realise in your subconscious that at that moment you are talking about love. It's more honest to do it that way. I know there are bands that write in a much more intellectual way but that's not really our thing.


💦 𝑻𝒉𝒊𝒔 𝒂𝒍𝒃𝒖𝒎 𝒊𝒔 𝒗𝒆𝒓𝒚 𝒅𝒊𝒇𝒇𝒆𝒓𝒆𝒏𝒕 𝒇𝒓𝒐𝒎 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒑𝒓𝒆𝒗𝒊𝒐𝒖𝒔 𝒐𝒏𝒆, 𝒊𝒕'𝒔 𝒔𝒐𝒇𝒕𝒆𝒓, 𝒎𝒐𝒓𝒆 𝒔𝒆𝒏𝒔𝒊𝒕𝒊𝒗𝒆, 𝒎𝒐𝒓𝒆 𝒎𝒆𝒍𝒂𝒏𝒄𝒉𝒐𝒍𝒊𝒄, 𝒘𝒉𝒚 𝒅𝒊𝒅 𝒚𝒐𝒖 𝒘𝒂𝒏𝒕 𝒊𝒕 𝒍𝒊𝒌𝒆 𝒕𝒉𝒂𝒕 ?
𝓑𝓻𝓲𝓪𝓷: We didn't want it that way. But what's true is that for every album we don't want to do the same thing as the last one. Not to use the same methods: that's where we start. But we don't choose the atmosphere or the subjects we're going to tackle. It doesn't reflect a state of mind but rather a discipline, i.e. it's by creating that inspiration comes. We are not the kind of artists who wait for inspiration to come, it comes through the work.


💦 𝑾𝒉𝒂𝒕 𝒘𝒂𝒔 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒎𝒐𝒔𝒕 𝒅𝒊𝒇𝒇𝒊𝒄𝒖𝒍𝒕 𝒔𝒐𝒏𝒈 𝒕𝒐 𝒘𝒓𝒊𝒕𝒆 𝒇𝒐𝒓 𝒕𝒉𝒊𝒔 𝒂𝒍𝒃𝒖𝒎 ?
𝓢𝓽𝓮𝓯𝓪𝓷: Loud Like Love and Begin The End came very quickly, but we had a hard time with A Million Little Pieces.
𝓑𝓻𝓲𝓪𝓷: It took us a long time to find the right style for that song. It finally clicked in rehearsal with our producer. He almost became a fourth member of the band. During the writing process we were so emotionally involved that we had no perspective. It's essential to have someone more objective, someone from the outside to tell you: "Well, you've got it or not, it's not there yet". And a good producer doesn't tell you how to do it, but insists that you go on and find out for yourself where you want to go.

𝓑𝓻𝓲𝓪𝓷: It's about a tragic love affair, torn apart by addictions. It's also about the search for redemption, and asking for forgiveness. What's interesting is that the first song on the album Loud Like Love and the last Bosco were written at the same time. On the one hand you have the big, saturated, punk, upbeat guitars, on the other hand a tragic story. We thought we had all the spectrums of emotions to explore between these two songs.

𝓑𝓻𝓲𝓪𝓷: The saddest songs are the most tender songs, but not always. The most beautiful is extremely subjective and depends on what you find beautiful. Personally, it's the sad songs and melancholic tunes that touch me the most, but in a very positive way. I feel very alive listening to them because they provoke very strong emotions, like with this Beatles song, Yer Blues written by John Lennon. It's an extremely sad song, completely depressing, but the music is quite violent, hard blues that lets out a lot of frustration and anger. It comes with sadness... We are big Beatles fans.
𝓢𝓽𝓮𝓯𝓪𝓷: There are different degrees of sadness. If there is hope then it can be very poetic. Bosco for example touched me a lot because it's a very sad song with little hope, it's very heavy. But it's also beautiful.


💦 𝑻𝒉𝒆𝒓𝒆 𝒊𝒔 𝒂 𝒔𝒐𝒏𝒈 𝒕𝒉𝒂𝒕 𝒈𝒐𝒕 𝒂 𝒍𝒐𝒕 𝒐𝒇 𝒂𝒕𝒕𝒆𝒏𝒕𝒊𝒐𝒏 𝒃𝒆𝒄𝒂𝒖𝒔𝒆 𝒐𝒇 𝒊𝒕𝒔 𝒅𝒐𝒖𝒃𝒍𝒆 𝒎𝒆𝒂𝒏𝒊𝒏𝒈, 𝒊𝒕'𝒔 𝑹𝒐𝒃 𝑻𝒉𝒆 𝑩𝒂𝒏𝒌...
𝓑𝓻𝓲𝓪𝓷: (𝑙𝑎𝑢𝑔ℎ𝑠) yes it's not a song about the financial crisis as many people think. You have to look a little bit under the surface! It's actually a song about carnal obsession, about jealousy. The narrator of this song says: "You can rob banks, make fun of the disabled, behave in an anti-Semitic way, I don't care, as soon as you get home, be satisfied. But if you look at someone else the way you look at me, watch out! Obsession and jealousy are two things that interest me: how to talk about love, without talking about its brutal and violent side?

Hello soulmates,

about a month before Placebo's performance in Singapore during the Loud Like Love tour in 2013, MTV Asia presenter Hanli Hoefer interviewed Stefan Olsdal.

It is clear that the questions revolved around the new album and especially around the burning topic of social networks.

I share this conversation with Hanli's preface, because I just like it.
As she herself stated - "overall, Stefan was well mannered, friendly, conversational and incredible thoughtful. I enjoyed my time speaking to him."
I would also like to point out that there is one small mistake in the transcript that I did not dare to correct - Placebo first played in Singapore in 1999 and since then in 2006 and 2010. The text should probably have written "first" not "last".😊

Hey guys!

Last week I had a phone interview with Stefan Olsdal, bassist and guitarist from the alternative rock band, Placebo.

I like Placebo, I don’t have any of their full albums but I do listen to a handful of their songs.

My top 3 favorites are: “Every You Every Me,” “Running Up That Hill,” and “Post Blue.”

The questions I asked him were mainly revolved around their up coming album, Loud Like Love. He described the album as the most colorful and honest album they’ve made to date. The first single, “Too Many Friends,” is based on the changing norms of society especially with the influence with social media.

When talking to him about the message behind the song we touched on the topic of social media as a whole and he brought up a very thought provoking point which was that, primarily, privacy is sacred. What you share may hurt you and at the same time how do we know whether social media is actually bringing us closer or isolating us.

Stefan shared with me that Brian (Molko) and himself don’t actually have a social media account of any sorts.

He did have one before but then felt as if he was being invaded by all these people asking to be his friend so he shut it down because he felt like it was in a way, emotional blackmail.

“There is a reason I’m not in touch with these people any more,” said Stefan. I find it a very different and interesting way to look at social media, as opposed to, “Oh I haven’t seen or heard anything from this person in ages, let me check up how they’ve been!

One thing that I find very interesting about Placebo is that Brian and Stefan are incredibly multilingual.

Stefan speaks Swedish, English, French, German and Spanish.

Actually, you can find many Placebo radio interviews online that’s done completely in European languages.

And when the conversation lightened up in the end, I asked him a fun question: “What trend would you like to bring back?”

He actually answered: “Mustaches. A strong porn ‘stache from the ’70s.” Very nice!


Overall, Stefan was well mannered, friendly, conversational and incredible thoughtful. I enjoyed my time speaking to him.

Stefan: It’s Placebo’s 7th record and probably our most colorful and honest album to date.

🔸𝑨𝒏𝒅 𝒎𝒆𝒎𝒐𝒓𝒂𝒃𝒍𝒆 𝒎𝒐𝒎𝒆𝒏𝒕𝒔 𝒘𝒉𝒆𝒏 𝒎𝒂𝒌𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒂𝒍𝒃𝒖𝒎?
S: Itʼs funny how the first two songs – “Loud Like Love” and “Bosco” – are the first and last track of the album. They seem to set a bookends for the theme and for the vibe, sound and feel of the record. “Loud Like Love” is an upbeat song, and “Bosco” is exposing the dark side of relationships and love. Also music style Loud like love is up beat, whilst Bosco is introverted and a stripped down piano track.
🔸𝑾𝒉𝒂𝒕 𝒘𝒐𝒖𝒍𝒅 𝒚𝒐𝒖 𝒔𝒂𝒚 𝒊𝒔 𝑻𝑯𝑬 𝒔𝒐𝒏𝒈 𝒐𝒇 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒂𝒍𝒃𝒖𝒎?
S: Itʼs difficult. “Too Many Friends” was the one that jumped out at me and Brian as being the first single and it also channeled our love for old ’80s epic pop tracks, like “Total Eclipse of the Heart.” So it seemed like the perfect first single. Personally I think “Bosco” is an achievement for the band for it transcends what we imagined Placebo to sound like. It’s something that sounds like we haven’t gone to that space before, vulnerable and emotional.

S: You touched on something that we relate to – privacy. Neither me or Brian are engaged in social media.

I set up a Facebook account then I immediately shut it down. I felt, first of all, that I was being invaded by all these people who wanted to be my friend and there is a reason Iʼm not in touch with these people anymore.

(It felt) almost like an emotional black mail, asking to be my friend. And I donʼt like to over expose myself. You put yourself in a vulnerable position.

Iʼve seen a lot of people to share their lives on social media and get really hurt by it. So the song questions the nature of friendship with these new “cyber friends.”

The big question is – Is it really bringing people closer together or is it isolating people? Considering the fact that people spend more time at home in front of the computer then interacting face to face.

S: Yeah! I even find myself reaching for my phone during social events. It has led to this new compulsion and there are treatments for internet addicts.

It’s a technological lifestyle change that is happening so fast I think its hard for us to say what effect its having to society and what the long terms affects may be.

It’s a really interesting formula and that’s what Too many friends touches upon.

S: I mean its interesting because I think there isn’t a singular music movement at the moment.

Like you say electronic dance music, that is happening in various parts of the world. I have friends from the States who are all “Hey man, have you heard this EDM?”

And Iʼm all like, “What? Yeah, we had that in Europe 20 years ago!”

Whats happening in Europe now is that the banjo is becoming quite popular every band has a banjo on their album.

So I don’t really see it as a global trend anymore with so many different outlets for music, with internet tv and internet radio.

Everything is out there and it’s much easier to listen to variety of music. For us, if you look at our history we never try to follow another sound or a band. Intrinsically, we feel that if you try to be something you are not, youʼre not going to get all the way there, you only become a copy of whatʼs out there.

If you follow a trend, by the time you end your record the trend has passed and itʼs like your shooting yourself in the foot. Basically we try to do what feels right for us, and so doing weʼve carved out our own little path.


🔸𝑨𝒓𝒆 𝒚𝒐𝒖 𝒆𝒙𝒄𝒊𝒕𝒆𝒅 𝒕𝒐 𝒑𝒍𝒂𝒚 𝒇𝒐𝒓 𝒚𝒐𝒖𝒓 𝒇𝒂𝒏𝒔 𝒊𝒏 𝑺𝒊𝒏𝒈𝒂𝒑𝒐𝒓𝒆?
S: Yes, we are! That’s the part of touring we enjoy the most! We’ve performed in Singapore a few times I think the last was in 1999.

There were some issues with cross dressing and it got heated politically. But yes, we do want to come back to play. We have good memories there, and we love playing in places where we have a history with and Singapore is definitely one of those places.

S: Iʼve been listening to Sigur Rosʼ new album. They are this Icelandic band. I also listen to an English singer/songwriter named James Blake. It tends to not be rock music, it tends to not be loud.

Something more contemplative, something to get lost in, something that does not follow the conventional pop structure with singing on it.

Dear Soulmates, on this Sunday evening I want to share with you an interview Placebo did in 2013 for “Tropical Pizza” a radio broadcast of the italian station Radio Deejay.
On the occasion of the promotion of their new album Loud Like Love, released just two weeks before, the guys got the chance to talk about both important issues and light topics.
Two funny aspects of the interview struck me: the first one was their heartily laughter, especially in the second half, while kidding with each other. Sure you won't be able to hear them reading the interview, but they made it really fun. 😊💖
The other one was the radio host who kept saying “you know, you know” -which I avoided writing down -...so, I wondered...was he trying to make Brian feel more comfortable? 😉

📢Brian: When I came up, when that line came to me, I did wonder for a little while whether or not I should use it, because I knew that it would be very memorable, but I also knew that people would either like love it or hate it, and that the song would be very much defined by it. But...having spent twenty years being loved and hated, I said to myself “go on, have the courage to do it!”.

📢Brian: It was inspired by real life that actually happened to me. A few years ago up to a certain point, you know how your computer advertises to you?

📢Brian: Yeah, all the f***ing cookies. So your computer's always sending you stuff, right? And it did advertise to me exclusively as a heterosexual male. And then one morning I got up and all the advertising changed, and it was advertising towards me like I was a homosexual male. And the first thought that went through my head was...
📢Stefan: Was it the computer? Or was it Stefs? (laughs)
📢Brian: (laughs)...and then my second thought was 'how strange! My computer thinks I'm gay today!'

📢Brian: Yes, that was the other thing! It was first my computers advertised to me differently, and then my friends, two friends, said to me that they were stopping taking friend requests on the social networks because they had too many friends, and because I don't social network. I've never thought of that as a concept before. And I thought 'how interesting! How can you have too many friends?' Then I thought 'how many friends do I have?' And then I thought like 'what's the nature of friendship today? What's the value of friendship today and community with all of these social networks? And that all came together in my head and then I sat down with an acoustic guitar and started to write Too many friends.

𝑆𝑜 𝑦𝑜𝑢 𝑤𝑒𝑟𝑒 𝑠𝑎𝑦𝑖𝑛𝑔 𝑦𝑜𝑢 ℎ𝑎𝑣𝑒 𝑙𝑖𝑘𝑒 𝑡ℎ𝑟𝑒𝑒 𝑔𝑜𝑜𝑑 𝑓𝑟𝑖𝑒𝑛𝑑𝑠?
📢Brian: About yes, you know. Of course there's my brothers, there's like, the six of us on stage, you know, all of us, between five and ten good friends. It's hard to manage more than that in life to be a good friend to all of those people, because it takes time and effort, and that's the difference between friendship in real life and friendship on the social networks. And the other thing about the social networks is that you get to edit yourself, you edit yourself, you give, you offer to the world well, how you want to be seen instead of how you really are, and that was interesting.

📢Brian: Yes, there are countries that we go to and play where it is not so LGBT friendly. But even though the government made legislate against LGBT people, we still go and play because the LGBT community in those countries exists and they need a band and we'll be there for them.

📢Brian: A lot of countries in eastern Europe and further, and just a little bit next door to Eastern Europe.

𝑊ℎ𝑎𝑡 𝑎𝑏𝑜𝑢𝑡 𝑠𝑜𝑢𝑡ℎ 𝐴𝑚𝑒𝑟𝑖𝑐𝑎 𝑓𝑜𝑟 𝑒𝑥𝑎𝑚𝑝𝑙𝑒, 𝑜𝑟 𝐼𝑡𝑎𝑙𝑦?
📢Brian: I think it seems very tolerant in Italy. Maybe some of your politicians they say very very strange things about female ministers. That is a little bit, that is very backward, we read about that stuff in the UK and we read about Bunga Bunga parties as well, in the UK. But the French they have a similar situation to Berlusconi, they have Dominique Strauss-Kahn and his prostitution scandal. You know, Italy, France, the UK, America, they are tolerant countries. There is conservatism everywhere, in the system, but we don't believe that a population is necessarily defined by its government.

Listening to this light and cheerful interview I couldn’t help but think about Placebo's most recent ones: it seems to be light years away from 2013, challenged topics and more concerned feelings. 📢 Yes, maybe, but at the same time we don't know what to do, that's the problem. It's more and more difficult to renew first, and we're always afraid of repeating ourselves. Some repetitions are inevitable because we have our own style. For me, when I have the tune, in front of this blank sheet, I always have this kind of panic in me. I tell myself 'what do I have to say ? What do I have to tell the world ?' I am not the kind of person who writes thing in an intellectual way. I let myself go with instinct. It's rather the writing process which influences the topics, the emotions of the song. It's more and more difficult maybe because I put more and more value in it.


𝙒𝙝𝙮 ?
📢 Because I'm a bit more conscious of the fact that ... Well.. let's say I less believe in my own legend. When you are young, you're very arrogant, you are strongly self confident. With time, it erodes a bit. You ask yourself more questions and you get more of an identity crisis. For me, it becomes another value, a bigger one. I may be too conscious about the missed opportunities in the past. So I push myself more... I am very critical, self critical of things I would have let go before, I fnd it harder these days. So, I have this process of writing, and re-writing, and re-writing. And it often ends at the last moment when you have to finish the album. 'You don't have no more time Brian so write something'. Sometimes a deadline can help.

📢 Well, no... No, I haven't thought about that until now. It's the same with 'Rob The Bank' on the new album. After the recording, someone told me : 'It reminds me of ‘Follow The Cops Back Home and rob their houses' . I told myself : 'Oh damn, I haven't thought about that'. 'A Million Little Pieces', 'We Come In Pieces', It's not a conscious connection I've made. I have stolen this title from a book by an American writer, James Frey, who wrote a sort of fictionalized essay about his life, about his huge addiction issues. Our song is quite abstract but I wanted to make this connection with this book in order to people, after they listen to this song 'A Million Little Pieces', go and read that book and open their mind and could give context to the song.

📢 Yes, I hope so. We really wanted this album to be vulnerable, a very human album sonically speaking. Even though we've used lots of electronic instruments on that album, we've used piano a lot and also Indian instruments like dulcimer for example, lots of chords. For me... Yeah, after 'Battle For The Sun', which was a strong guitar album, kind of a guitar wall, I wanted to do something more delicate, more melancholic, with a human side. A sort of melancholy which makes you proud of the fact you can still feel this melancholy. A sort of happy sadness. This is the kind of music, since I've discovered artists like Leonard Cohen who has moved me throughout my life. Songs that make me cry but still make me happy that I am an emotional being and can cry this way.

📢 It's very interesting because it's the first album where we have used our phones, our ipad as instruments in the studio. There was this kind of childish joy because you can find something on the app store, it takes one minute to get it and you can begin playing. Because of the interface, it gives a childish joy because it's like a toy. It has become something really important on this album, and there's also this hyper human essence of the hands clapping. It gives you an idea of the scope of the sound and instrumentation we wanted to use in the sound of Placebo for this album. Yeah, a sort of democratic posture towards everything. A sort of open-mindedness too.

You can make a song at home and send it to someone. You spend less time in the studio, getting bored. The producer can send you mixes, things to listen to. It's important to stress because all this technology won't write a song for you. You always need the human touch to give soul to something. Even when you're using an ipad, it's the human touch which controls everything. With this tool, it's rather the accident which is magical. The fact it's brand new, you don't really know how to use it, we often use it the bad way and through these accidents, you can create something magical.

📢 Aesthetically speaking, I wanted to stop with the Placebo aesthetic which was well established, a physical aesthetic, very figurative and quite monochrome. My first musical crush was psychedelic music. I wanted to do something with all the covers. Something quite psychedelic and use the 60's, the 70's, the 80's and the 90's altogether with all the formats, etc. These pictures are quite psychedelic as if it was seen through an old tv set or so. 📢 It means 'forrest' in Italian. Stefan began playing this song on the piano. He gave this name to the melody. After that, I wrote the lyrics. We couldn't find a better title. So, why not. It's quite abstract. There's a sort of mystery with it. It could be interpreted in hundreds of ways. We like this ambiguity, We like this mystery so we decided to keep it.

It's aslo a list of crimes, of repulsive things. The person in this song is saying : "You know, you can do whatever you want, you can have hundreds of disgusting ways, I don't care as far as you come back home at the end of the day and satisfy me".
