The song, recorded at Westland Studios in Dublin and produced by Brad Wood, reached number 30 on the UK Singles Chart.
It was played live 409 times over the years, and between 1995 and 2017 there was not one single year when it wasn't brought on stage at least once.

The demo version of "Teenage Angst" from 1995 includes the line “Well I was suicidal once / but now honestly I am fine“ which was replaced by “Airs and social graces / elocution so divine“ in the version that was finally released. I think the record label wasn't too happy about the lyrics dealing with suicide and so the song text had to be changed.

“Teenage Angst“ is part of the band's repertoire prior to the release of their debut album in 1996. It has been performed in notably different versions. It was played live 414 confirmed times over the years, and between 1995 and 2017 there was not one single year when it wasn't brought on stage at least once. The first time ever was on January 23rd 1995 at Rock Garden in London. This was also the very first Placebo concert. The last time “Teenage Angst“ was played live was on October 8th 2017 in Dundee, Scotland, during the “20 years“ anniversary tour.
The original version was staged up until 2000. A piano-based version was played during the “Black market music“, “Meds“ and „Battle for the sun“ tours.
During the „Sleeping with ghosts“ tour “Teenage Angst“ was played with a hip-hop inspired drum beat. At the end of the “Battle for the sun“ tour in 2010, the song was performed with a new arrangement. Another rework appeared during the “Loud like love“ tour.

Most recently, we’re on our fourth version of “Teenage Angst” from the first album. We have a brand new version of that, which is actually my favorite of the tour. It took 20 years since I wrote that song for us to settle on what I think is the definitive version, but that’s ok.“

๐Ÿ“ข “When we do stuff from the first album, we try to do different versions. We have an interesting hip-hop version of 'Teenage Angst' at the moment. I am having a lot of fun with it, it gives me a chance to do my Bono bit with a wireless microphone. I am doing that more and more.”
(The Sentimentalist - Issue XII, 2003)

๐Ÿ“ข “That's the difference between "Teenage Angst" and the new version of the song, which has become very melancholic, which we transformed more and more to that during our tour. We want to explore the scope of our skills more and more and the tendency is towards melancholy. But we can say about ourselves today, when we go there, we really go in that direction, it's not playing around anymore, the emotions are real, we don't need to pretend to anything. When you see us on stage on our next tour, you really see us. That's Placebo.”

๐Ÿ“ข "When I was a teenager, I felt things in more passionate ways, I've gone through rebellion phases. I was feeling depressed, I felt like the world was about to collapse. A sort of alienation towards parents, a rebellion against what they wanted me to become, against growing, going through this kind of changes. My emotions were going in many directions because physically, I was becoming an adult. I was longing for it, but I was still dealt with as a child. Art and creativity were minor things, unknown in my familly. That's surely for that reason, I reacted so violently. I became the ugly duckling: my father wanted me to become a businessman, and my mother wanted me to be a saint. Finally, I satisfied none of them. At this age, music can represent many things, be the last emergency exit. Play guitar was a sort of outlet to my familly troubles, to authority. My parents didn't contribute at all to what I am today and that's marvellous. I am here today only by myself. I need to have success, very selfishly, to refute all people who thought I would not go far in life, to show it to the people who were better than me at school, my rivals in every way, my parents.”
(Les Inrocks, August 13th 1996)

๐Ÿ“ข "I've always been a loner. The three of us are like that, we have gone through adolescence locked in our room, playing music. And like many boys this age, I was dreaming to become a star. A city like Luxembourg can be stifling when you try to forge your identity. I couldn't be myself there. I felt secluded there, far from the places where I wanted to be. There was no place where I could have expressed myself, found a feedback. From this isolation, I made songs, 'Teenage Angst' or 'Burger Queen', because fatally that made me a voyeur. It's not the best place to observe the world.”
(Les Inrockuptibles N°169, August 14th 1998)

Shine the headlight,
Straight into my eyes.
Like the roadkill,
I'm paralysed.
You see through my disguise

At the drive-in,
Double feature,
Pull the lever,
Break the fever
And say your last goodbyes.

Since I was born
I started to decay
Now nothing ever
Ever goes my way

One fluid gesture,
Like stepping back in time
Trapped in amber, petrified
I’m still not satisfied

Airs and social graces,
Elocution so divine
I’ll stick to my needle
And my favourite waste of time
Both spineless and sublime

Since I was born
I started to decay
Now nothing ever
Ever goes my way

Hi soulmates,

And what do we know about the origins of this song?
"I Know" is a transcription of a conversation between Brian and a loved one he broke up with. Moving to New York, being totally alone and depressed led him to a phone booth somewhere on Broadway to call that person and tell her:

Do you know its origin?
Brian was influenced to write this song by the French writer and poet This book is actually a pornographic autobiography (very shocking in its time) that Genet wrote in prison during World War II.
It is said that this writer needed to feed his erotic muse somehow, so he stole brown paper supplied to prisoners to make paper bags and wrote his novel on it.
The first one was confiscated by the guards, but he was persistent, and managed to get the second draft of his story about the drag queen Divine out of prison and published in 1943.
Interestingly, the model for the writing of this "epic of masturbation" was the homosexual and convicted murderer Maurice Pilorge, who lost his head to the guillotine at Rennes in 1939.
It was the very last execution carried out there. Genet was directly fascinated by this man and his story, he even claimed to know Pilorg personally. He composed a wonderful poem about him, which you can read here:

Hello soulmates,
Today I'm going to invite you to Brian's interview, which was published by Rolling Stone India magazine.
Together with Brian, you can reminisce about the magical concert at Angkor Wat and learn where another talented Molko - his son Cody - was conceived.
I will write about the importance of the whole Angkor Wat event in more detail next time.
However, for a wonderful end to the evening, I have chosen one of Placebo's most beautiful songs...

Speaking to Placebo’s ๐Ÿ”น๐—•๐—ฅ๐—œ๐—”๐—ก ๐— ๐—ข๐—Ÿ๐—ž๐—ข๐Ÿ”น, frontman of the band that once carried the title of “Britain most outrageous music group” like a pennant, you’re expecting anything ”“ tantrums, arrogance, reticence, impatience ”“ anything but the practiced spiel he’s now dishing as he talks about their sixth album Battle For the Sun. In hindsight, that shouldn’t have been surprising at all. If there’s one thing Placebo have mastered in all their fifteen years, it’s the art of always staying a step ahead of the public’s expectations. It’s also the reason why they’re one of Britain’s most consistently successful bands. The band that first gained notoriety for their alternative sexualities, debauched lifestyle and frontman Molko’s androgynous image are eager to shed the ghosts of their past and move beyond their image. .../***/

That the band’s sunniest album should come at the most tempestuous time in their career, is the kind of irony Molko relishes. He doesn’t cloak the bitterness and pain that the exit of Steve Hewitt brought about, but he’s spoken about it so often now, it comes out without emotion or rancour.

...One of the most beautiful Placebo songs...
...A song whose playing never bored the band and until their last tour was part of the setlist...
...A song loved by muse... because guys enjoy inventing other versions of its performance...
...A song whose lyrics have not lost their importance over many years...

๐Ÿ”ธ"Well, that was something my mother said to me: She was talking about ageing, wrinkling, skin drying up and stuff. This was when I was about 14. She said that as soon as you pop out of the womb you start to deteriorate. I actually found her words quite disturbing but, y'know, she's a religious kind of person."๐Ÿ”ธ

๐Ÿ”ธ๐“๐„๐„๐๐€๐†๐„ ๐€๐๐†๐’๐“ was released exactly 25 years ago, on September 16, 1996 as the third single of the band Placebo.
Some sources state that this is the fourth single in a row. Here, however, it depends on whether we include the single "Bruise Pristine" in the total number, because in the original version it was released before the debut album, in 1995, basically as the first Placebo single.
Single „Teenage Angst“ was released in two versions and reached number 30 in the UK Singles Chart.
It was recorded at Westland Studios in Dublin and produced by Brad Wood.
In addition to the lead song, the CD version also contains "Been Smoking Too Long" and "Hug Bubble".
Besides „Teenage Angst (Amsterdam V.P.R.O. Session)“, the 7“ vinyl version also includes a demo version „Flesh Mechanic“ and „H.K. Farewell“.

๐Ÿ”ธ๐“๐„๐„๐๐€๐†๐„ ๐€๐๐†๐’๐“ is one of the first tracks that Brian ever wrote for the band.
It was played live 409 times over the years, and between 1995 and 2017 there was not one single year when it wasn't brought on stage at least once.
The first confirmed performance of “Teenage Angst” was on September 5th 1995 at Holy City Zoo in Manchester, UK.

๐Ÿ”ธA great and very imaginative video for the song was shot by the director Trevor Robinson.
๐Ÿ“ŒBrian said about the shoot:
"This video was directed by Trevor Robinson. I think it is the only video he made. Maybe because the experience of working with us must be so traumatic, he’s never made one again."

๐Ÿ”ธAnother interesting feature of "Teenage Angst" is that in the demo version, part of the lyrics was different from the released version. The line „Well I was suicidal once / But now honestly I'm fine“ was replaced by „Airs and social graces / Elocution so divine“.
It is quite possible that the record company was not very happy with the lyrics dealing with suicide, so the lyrics had to be changed.

Dear soulmates, do you also enjoy watching different live versions of this song over the years?

๐Ÿ”ธ"Teenage Angst" was played in the original version until the year 2000.
๐Ÿ”ธThe piano version was played during the tours "Black Market Music", "Meds" and "Battle For The Sun".
๐Ÿ”ธA great and playful hip-hop version sounded during the "Sleeping With Ghosts" tour.
๐Ÿ”ธIn 2010, at the end of the "Battle For The Sun" tour, a new version of "Teenage Angst" appeared on the stage and an absolutely amazing version of this song complemented the "Loud Like Love" tour setlist.

๐Ÿ“ŒAnd Brian said about this:
“I’ve often found that if you can take one of your band’s songs and strip it all the way back to just a vocal and an acoustic guitar, or a vocal and a piano, then it’s the sign of a really, really good song. Similarly, if you can rewrite it four times — like we have with “Teenage Angst.” That’s a song that refuses to die. That’s a classic, because if you cover it in three different ways, then it has to be a classic [laughs].“

So, dear friends, now you can remember the different versions of "Teenage Angst" in the videos I share with you. I will be very grateful for your feelings and confession which version is your favorite.

"I've always been a loner. From this isolation, I made songs, Teenage Angst or Burger Queen, because fatally that made me a voyeur. It's not the best place to observe the world."

Most recently, we’re on our fourth version of “Teenage Angst” from the first album. We have a brand new version of that, which is actually my favorite of the four. It took 20 years since I wrote that song for us to settle on what I think is the definitive version, but that’s okay.“

"What we tend to do is cover ourselves with quite a few versions of our songs that we've released. One of our first singles, 'Teenage Angst', has been done in piano format, it's been done in the rock format, and it has this stadium rock format. Then we went back to an electric bass led version. So in order for us to remain interested in our back catalogue we often change them and adopt them to how we feel. Sometimes a song when we record it, it's in an embryonic form it tells you ‘Listen, I'm supposed to be played this way.”
