And what do we know about the origins of this song?
"I Know" is a transcription of a conversation between Brian and a loved one he broke up with. Moving to New York, being totally alone and depressed led him to a phone booth somewhere on Broadway to call that person and tell her:

Do you know its origin?
Brian was influenced to write this song by the French writer and poet 🔹𝐉𝐞𝐚𝐧 𝐆𝐞𝐧𝐞𝐭'𝐬 𝐧𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐥 "𝐍𝐨𝐭𝐫𝐞-𝐃𝐚𝐦𝐞-𝐝𝐞𝐬-𝐅𝐥𝐞𝐮𝐫𝐬"🔹. This book is actually a pornographic autobiography (very shocking in its time) that Genet wrote in prison during World War II.
It is said that this writer needed to feed his erotic muse somehow, so he stole brown paper supplied to prisoners to make paper bags and wrote his novel on it.
The first one was confiscated by the guards, but he was persistent, and managed to get the second draft of his story about the drag queen Divine out of prison and published in 1943.
Interestingly, the model for the writing of this "epic of masturbation" was the homosexual and convicted murderer Maurice Pilorge, who lost his head to the guillotine at Rennes in 1939.
It was the very last execution carried out there. Genet was directly fascinated by this man and his story, he even claimed to know Pilorg personally. He composed a wonderful poem about him, which you can read here:

✨Dear Soulmates, this evening I'd like to introduce you to 𝗘𝗳𝗳𝗲𝘁𝘁𝗼𝗣𝗹𝗮𝗰𝗲𝗯𝗼, an italian Placebo cover band in activity from 2003 to 2016. ✨
Over those years the band played hundreds live shows in Italy, Europe and Asia with great success, and in 2004 they even had the opportunity to personally get in touch with Placebo themselves, who on that occasion appointed 𝗘𝗳𝗳𝗲𝘁𝘁𝗼𝗣𝗹𝗮𝗰𝗲𝗯𝗼 𝗼𝗻𝗹𝘆 𝗼𝗳𝗳𝗶𝗰𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗯𝘂𝘁𝗲 𝗯𝗮𝗻𝗱.

I would say the guys do have something to be proud of, don't you think?🤩 So, let's read together an intense biography of the band:

EffettoPlacebo started their career on December 20th 2003, playing in Prato (Tuscany, Italy) at the presentation of Placebo’s biography, published by Arcana.
From that moment onwards, an endless tour took the band playing in the best Italian live clubs for the following 5 years.

On March 20th and 21st 2004, EffettoPlacebo organizes together with PlaceboItalia, the first “Placeboitaliaweekend”, a two-days event with an evening live show and a fans meeting the following day in Florence auditorium.
October 2004 sees the most important week in their career: on the 23rd, the band presents the brand new single “20years” by Placebo; on the 24th they’re invited as guests at 𝗠𝗧𝗩 𝗦𝘂𝗽𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗼𝗻𝗶𝗰 for the “real” Placebo’s performance, and on the 25th during MTV show TRL -Total Request Live- 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝘆 𝗺𝗲𝗲𝘁 𝗣𝗹𝗮𝗰𝗲𝗯𝗼 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗼𝗳𝗳𝗶𝗰𝗶𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆 𝗿𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗴𝗻𝗶𝘇𝗲𝗱 𝗯𝘆 𝗕𝗿𝗶𝗮𝗻 𝗠𝗼𝗹𝗸𝗼 & 𝗰𝗼. 𝗮𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗼𝗻𝗹𝘆 𝗮𝘂𝘁𝗵𝗼𝗿𝗶𝘇𝗲𝗱 𝗣𝗹𝗮𝗰𝗲𝗯𝗼 𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗯𝘂𝘁𝗲 𝗯𝗮𝗻𝗱.

On March 16th 2006, in cooperation with Radiorock and Virgin Italia, the band is in charge of launching the preview of “Meds” album for Italy during an unforgettable show at Qube club in Rome, where they hand out gadgets and CD singles on behalf of Placebo, as a gift to their fans.
On October 9th 2006, the band is back on show in Milan at the Transilvania and they perform at the Mazda Palace just after the Placebo’s gig, in a new fans meeting, which will never be forgotten.
The band cooperate with the major Italian, French and South American websites regarding Placebo.

In December 2007 and May 2008 EffettoPlacebo leave Italy to go on tour abroad, especially in Turkey where they get a huge success, sold-out gigs and lots of interviews for MTV Turkey as most requested tribute band of the year, thus creating a twinning between the Italian and the Turkish fans communities.

Several members took turns in the band from 2003 to 2012, but the two core members of EffettoPlacebo are:
𝗞𝗜𝗞𝗜 – 𝗟𝗘𝗔𝗗 𝗦𝗜𝗡𝗚𝗘𝗥 𝗔𝗡𝗗 𝗚𝗨𝗜𝗧𝗔𝗥
Simone Baldassin, aka Kiki, was born in Treviso. He started his song-writer career in 1995 and over the years learned to play bass guitar, acoustic guitar, synth and electronic guitar. He set up Alternathiva, an electronic music band that disbanded in 2003 when Kiki became a singer and founded EffettoPlacebo.
As side projects, he first set up the indie band Seven- with which he released two albums- and then the Killtherabbit - with which he released one debut album.
Furthermore Kiki is both the creator and the manager of the 𝗼𝗳𝗳𝗶𝗰𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝗶𝘁𝗮𝗹𝗶𝗮𝗻 𝗣𝗹𝗮𝗰𝗲𝗯𝗼'𝘀 𝘄𝗲𝗯𝘀𝗶𝘁𝗲 𝗽𝗹𝗮𝗰𝗲𝗯𝗼𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗹𝗱𝗶𝘁𝗮𝗹𝗶𝗮.𝗰𝗼𝗺, 𝗮𝘀 𝘄𝗲𝗹𝗹 𝗮𝘀 𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗺𝗮𝗻𝗮𝗴𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝗣𝗹𝗮𝗰𝗲𝗯𝗼 𝗜𝘁𝗮𝗹𝗶𝗮 𝗙𝗕 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗺𝘂𝗻𝗶𝘁𝘆.


𝗭𝗜𝗢𝗔𝗟𝗘 – 𝗕𝗔𝗦𝗦 𝗔𝗡𝗗 𝗕𝗔𝗖𝗞𝗚𝗥𝗢𝗨𝗡𝗗 𝗩𝗢𝗖𝗔𝗟
Alessandro “ZioAle” Pisu was born in Treviso. He learned to play bass by himself, and together with Federico Roncato, (former drummer of EffettoPlacebo) he set up Valium, a Nirvana cover band.
He joined EffettoPlacebo in 2004, and toured several countries with the band such as Cyprus, Turkey, Holland, Belgium and, of course, Italy.

EffettoPlacebo stopped their activity as Tribute band in 2012: after 10 years playing Placebo songs across Italy and Europe, they took a long break to dedicate to their own projects.
The band has never officially dissolved, they just decided not to perform more live shows.
From time to time they produce some studio recordings as "Running up that hill" for Placebo20's birthday and they do not exclude- sooner or later- to come back to play live. So, maybe we'll be able to see them playing live again from March 25th on 🤩🤩.


I'd like to share with you what the singer, Kiki, shared on FB last November 11th 2021: an heartfelt and nostalgic memory thinking back to some years ago when touring throughout Europe with the band:

Reading these statements I thought of Brian's quotes about artists' nomadic way of life when on tour: as fans, we experience only the joyful aspects, the positive emotions, the “collective euphoria” using Brian's words, but for artists it is undoubtely true that “pleasure comes with a price” both physically and mentally and at times it can be really exhausting and disorienting. Anyway this is the price that artists are willing to pay to live with their passions, and we are grateful for that.

Two concerts at the 𝐁𝐫𝐢𝐱𝐭𝐨𝐧 𝐀𝐜𝐚𝐝𝐞𝐦𝐲 on 𝐎𝐜𝐭𝐨𝐛𝐞𝐫 𝟐𝟑𝐫𝐝 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝟐𝟒𝐭𝐡, 𝟐𝟎𝟏𝟕 had to be the final UK dates of the 𝟐𝟎 𝒀𝒆𝒂𝒓𝒔 𝑶𝒇 𝑷𝒍𝒂𝒄𝒆𝒃𝒐 𝑻𝒐𝒖𝒓. But… sadly, several days before Brian got serious voice problems which forced Placebo to cancel upcoming concerts in Portsmouth and Swindon.
The band put out the following statement on their 𝒐𝒇𝒇𝒊𝒄𝒊𝒂𝒍 𝑭𝒂𝒄𝒆𝒃𝒐𝒐𝒌 𝒑𝒂𝒈𝒆:

📢 "It is with great regret that Placebo are unable to play the upcoming shows at Portsmouth Guildhall on 16th October and Swindon Oasis on 17th October this coming week.
"Brian Molko has been suffering from throat problems which has badly affected his voice. The band were reluctant to cancel dates and let the fans down and pressed ahead with the shows in Reading and Cardiff over the weekend but it was clear that Brian was struggling to sing.

"Brian will now see a specialist in London asap and following that diagnosis, we will make further announcements regarding the shows. […] Placebo would like to apologise to the fans for this disappointment and hope for better news soon."

However, Placebo decided to go forward with the 𝐁𝐫𝐢𝐱𝐭𝐨𝐧 𝐀𝐜𝐚𝐝𝐞𝐦𝐲 𝐬𝐡𝐨𝐰𝐬 although Brian hasn’t recovered completely yet. Some songs had even to be rearranged to make them easier for Brian to sing… The guys trusted their devoted fans and hoped for their support and understanding…

It really didn’t matter, dear Brian. […] Going smoother in tone with Loud Like Love, they built a beating climax, rising up to the strong rhythm of For What it’s Worth. Midway through the gig, I know offered a powerful exchange and crossing of guitars between Stefan Olsdal, who was definitely one of the highlights of the night, and Nick Gavrilovic.

As intense as it could be, the music emanated from the stage with unique energy. The high-pitched voice of Molko more often than not blended and got lost behind the strings – among which to note Angela Chan’s violin – and the keys.

Unforgettable was the rockers’ tribute to David Bowie with Without You I’m Nothing. While the ticking beats of the music flew soft and melodic, footage of the smiley face of the Thin White Duke – who featured in and recorded the song with Placebo in 1999 – was projected onto the background, filling more than simple words would do. Ah, one of my all-time favourites again tonight hopefully (hopefully due to the fact that a few previous gigs were cancelled due to Brian having lost his voice a couple of weeks back). As it was, the gig went off without a hitch, albeit with Brian having to perform with less than perfect vocals, having not fully recovered by the time of the sound check.

[…] But the sell-out crowd of nearly 5000 were there for the music, something the band excel at live.

Stefan and Brian, both dressed in black, took residence at the front of the stage with Stefan mixing up instruments from guitar to bass to keyboards throughout. The set list was a cross section of classics from their back catalogue. The songs were interspersed with projected live feeds of the band, videos (‘Without You I’m Nothing’ was a tribute to the unforgettable Thin White Duke) and strobes. Some of the slower mid-section songs really tested Brian’s vocals, his weakness apparent to all in its flatness. […] They return for a two-song encore with Stefan holding aloft his rainbow guitar to mass applause. The backdrop changes to a packet of fags with a Donald Trump effigy and wording of ‘seriously harms you and other around you’ when Brian finally leaves the stage last after a minute fiddling with feedback on his amp – a very R’n’R finish.
So, to summarise – they weren’t at their best (which is understandable), but even like this they were mighty impressive visually. The songs do stand for themselves and the majority of the audience seemed to be having a bloody good time.

Brian asked not to take videos. Basically, he always does but this time there was a serious reason for that. I feel kind of ashamed sharing this video… although to me, it looks and sounds incredibly beautiful and moving…
So please, go watch it only those of you who really LOVE THE SINGER…
