In the middle of March 2016, “news had just come over”: Placebo confirmed their 20th anniversary tour!
𝐁𝐫𝐢𝐚𝐧 made quite a promising statement about the forthcoming shows:
📢“…Let’s just say there will be songs in the set that I’ve sworn never to play again. I think it’s time that we purposefully acknowledged what a lot of Placebo fans really want to hear. They’ve been very patient with us since we rarely play our most commercially successful material.
A 20-years anniversary tour seems like the right time to do so. That’s our intention. This tour is very much for the fans and a chance for us to revisit a lot of our early material.
So, if you want to see us play songs like ‘Pure Morning’ and ‘Nancy Boy’ which we haven’t played in almost ten years and may not play again, then you’d better come along to these shows! We’ll have some surprises in there too…”

He wouldn't write something like that now, but he did back then. For him it's being able to walk on stage and sing with conviction without smiling or without making up different lyrics, you know.

What we tend to do is cover ourselves with quite a few versions of our songs that we've released. One of our first singles, 'Teenage Angst', has been done in piano format, it's been done in the rock format, and it has this stadium rock format. Then we went back to an electric bass led version. So in order for us to remain interested in our back catalogue we often change them and adopt them to how we feel. Sometimes a song when we record it, it's in an embryonic form it tells you ‘Listen, I'm supposed to be played this way.'”

📢𝐁𝐫𝐢𝐚𝐧: I'm sure it helped shape its sonic palette. It was like a kind of rebellion against this more commercial aspect of the band's life. On 𝐍𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐫 𝐋𝐞𝐭 𝐌𝐞 𝐆𝐨, we really had this sincere desire to lay ourselves bare. Every album we've done has been a reaction to the previous one, but on this one I think it was more in response to this rather masturbatory anniversary tour. On the other hand, I also realize that it did our audience a lot of good. It has taught us to accept the euphoria that the fans give us on stage. And this is probably the first time in my life that I've realized that so much, because I've always made music in a very selfish way. It's a necessary means of expression for me. If this tour has taught us anything, it's that there is value in giving pleasure to others, rather than satisfying yourself.

📢“I had reservations coming into this record based on the experience of touring,” says co-writer and multi-instrumentalist 𝐒𝐭𝐞𝐟𝐚𝐧 𝐎𝐥𝐬𝐝𝐚𝐥. “It felt like we were slowly killing ourselves, and I just didn’t know how much life I felt there was left in the band. My confidence was at an all-time low.”
“We have a tendency to do a lot that we’re asked to do, regardless of how it’s going to affect our physical and mental wellbeing, so we continued touring,” 𝐌𝐨𝐥𝐤𝐨 adds. “By the end of it, I felt like a performing monkey that was being moved around the world; kind of detached from the soul of it.”

🔹 There's no need to introduce this band that has defined itself over the years as a giant of the alternative rock scene. To celebrate their 20th anniversary, PLACEBO are offering a world tour that traces their beginnings alongside DAVID BOWIE to their latest album A Place For Us to Dream and the EP Life's What You Make It, two luminous tracks in the uncertain darkness of our future. Brian Molko says: "Let's just say there will be songs we swore we'd never play again. I think it's time we recognised what a lot of our fans want to hear. They've been very patient with us because we don't often play the songs that have been commercially successful. But this 20th anniversary tour feels like the perfect time to do it. That's our intention. This tour will be a tour for the fans, but also an opportunity for us to revisit some of our songs. So if you want to see us play songs like Pure Morning and Nancy Boy that we haven't played in almost ten years and may never play again, then you better come to these shows ! And we promise there will be some surprises too."

🔹 The concert takes place at the Halle Tony Garnier in Lyon, organised by Radical Production in partnership with RTL2, who will probably broadcast the live show in a short while. After opening for LAST TRAIN, PLACEBO starts their performance with their Every You, Every Me promo video shown on 3 huge screens at the back of the stage. A little flashback in images that retraces their adventures from 1997 to the present day. Then the intro of Pure Morning starts, led by Matt Lunn on drums, "The new, the young, the beautiful" says Brian before singing their song Too Many Friends, accompanied by Stefan Olsdal on piano. It is with great emotion that we discover a current song whose words of the chorus resound in this huge room. The instruments change hands, the hands change instruments, the screens broadcast the live show and turn our musicians into giants. We are witnessing a real festival of colours and lights. We take a moment to look behind us, the hall is full, the audience is singing and dancing. The ages merge and unite, and then the band gives such a strong ovation during the last song that they reward us with a first and second encore before leaving us in shock. The concert is well and truly over this time, it's time to go home.

📍 𝐓𝐇𝐄 𝐕𝐄𝐍𝐔𝐄
🔹 Initially conceived as a place of commerce, plans for its construction began in 1907, headed by Tony Garnier, an architect from Lyon. Subjected to the vagaries of historical events, the place became an arms factory during the First World War and a cattle market in 1928. The activity stopped in 1967. Abandoned, La Halle was on the verge of demolition and was saved by being classified as a Historic Monument in 1975. After several years of disuse, La Halle was refurbished to become a cultural venue in 1988, hosting in turn film events (Festival Lumière), charities (Telethon) and classical concerts (Berlioz Festival). It is one of the largest concert halls in France. Placebo gave three concerts there in 2006, 2009 and 2017 respectively.

🎤𝑺𝒕𝒆𝒇𝒂𝒏 𝑶𝒍𝒔𝒅𝒂𝒍: With this anniversary we released a couple of new songs, but we are doing this retrospective tour, and it's like a moment to be thankful for what Placebo has done and is today. We're still touring, I don't know what's going to happen after that, but we're musicians and as musicians we can't retire, because a musician can't stop. Maybe you don't do it the same way, maybe you stop touring, but you can't retire. So far Brian and I have been together for 20 years but I don't feel like stopping, so if we add that up, I think there's going to be more Placebo music.

When we did the compilation, it was the perfect time to release it because, relative to other Placebo tracks, "Jesus' Son" has a more positive vibe, and to do a celebration and a birthday party vibe we thought it was the perfect song. It gives more positive energy, more hope and it became the theme of this tour.

When I got there almost, yes more than 20 years ago, I realized that if I wanted to talk to people and have a social life, I had to learn Spanish.

I am Swedish, Swedish is worth... very little (𝘭𝘢𝘶𝘨𝘩𝘴). It is only spoken in Sweden, but Spanish, here I am speaking Spanish which is not the same as Mexican, but we understand each other. The world is getting smaller, I give up French, it is worth very little too, I prefer Spanish (𝘭𝘢𝘶𝘨𝘩𝘴).

Nimes is home to one of the best-preserved Roman amphitheaters in the world, with an auditorium for up to 24,000 people. The Nimes Arena is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Its origin dates back to the 90th AD. In Roman times, the arena was used for gladiatorial games. Today, in addition to summer concerts, bullfights are also held there. The capacity of the auditorium was reduced to 13,000 visitors.

If Brian, whom I had seen two nights before in Barolo, seemed already in a state of grace, what I am facing tonight makes me seriously think that my singer looks more smiling, engaging, double cheerful, and ultimately, also a lot more sexy.

And it's clearly the hormone that speaks for me, but try to understand that between a particularly heavy sweat (seeing means believing) and an adorable disgusted expression (complemented with our accusation of doing nothing but staying behind a cell phone), the objectivity of a poor fan overwhelmed by tsunami of emotions is reduced to less than the minimum wage.

𝐄𝐱𝐢𝐭 𝐖𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐝𝐬 and 𝟑𝟔 𝐃𝐞𝐠𝐫𝐞𝐞𝐬, I think they should now be officially archived as weapons of mass destruction. The first, less recited and certainly much more intense than usual, leaves a collective daze on the field while the second, especially the very last asympathetic "Shoulders toes and knees, I'm dirty sex" is certainly responsible for the peak of births that will occur in roughly April 2018.
(Both songs end with two powerful mic licks).


But it is on 𝐒𝐩𝐞𝐜𝐢𝐚𝐥 𝐊 that the real drama takes shape. In the background I see a shady figure wandering around the stage armed with a video camera. I hadn't really noticed it so far, but it's clear that then they're really resuming the show. I distinctly recognize the good Charlie Targett-Adams (formerly responsible for the highly anticipated documentary Placebo: Alt.Russia, soon to be aired on Netflix and whose second part, Placebo: Alt.Vimercate is already in the works) and at that moment I realize that the shit figure could be world-wide.


Still, do you think that could have stopped us?
Absolutely not, our singer tonight is able to make us forget the name and surname even of the closest relatives, let alone the consciousness of perpetuation in something we will be ashamed of until the seventh generation can bring us back to earth.
We certainly realize that those five minutes of preventive shyness were definitely not enough.


We arrive at 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐁𝐢𝐭𝐭𝐞𝐫 𝐄𝐧𝐝 and I am honestly exhausted, certainly very happy, but physically, hormonally, and mentally devastated. The debut here is the declaration of war, the embrace of the guitar for the "comfort zone", the "caress" of the aforementioned very happy guitar, which leaves nothing to the imagination. I mean, I definitely need a break. (The song ends with a breathless "end" and licking the microphone as in the manual). .../.../


In a moment we arrive at 𝐑𝐮𝐧𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠 [𝐔𝐩 𝐓𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐇𝐢𝐥𝐥] and consequently we know that it is very close to the end. But for the first time I do not experience this moment with regret, but as the culmination of a perfect show from all points of view./.../

Brian climbs up onto the stage armed with what appears to be a particularly vintage analog video camera with which he shoots the audience.
I thought I really saw everything, but if someone told me that one day I would end up in Brian Molko's film, I would consider him a fool and give him the name of a good psychiatrist.
I thank all the known and unknown divinities, for giving me a very rare moment of lucidity to have prevented me from making completely crazy faces. Maybe the look wasn't the most intelligent but at least I managed to keep a semblance of normality by masking a sort of inner apocalypse with a slight embarrassed smile.


Now, aside from songs that have deserved a special mention, I actually think I saw Nîmes as the best show of the whole tour. Besides the fact that the question: why wasn't I born a microphone or a guitar? it will haunt me for the rest of my existence, I leave the Arena knowing that I attended an unforgettable concert, and all I have to do is look my comrades in the eye to understand that this time it's not just my impression.


I certainly don't forget that Brian is also a great actor, and therefore much of the joviality, empathy, energy and joy that was shown to us tonight was used and consumed for the footage.. Because it is clear that if you are making a video that will be part, I hope, of a possible DVD you try to give your best (and I'm really sorry to have ruined most of the scenes) but if this is the result, well guys, let's do it way to resume all concerts!

Two concerts at the 𝐁𝐫𝐢𝐱𝐭𝐨𝐧 𝐀𝐜𝐚𝐝𝐞𝐦𝐲 on 𝐎𝐜𝐭𝐨𝐛𝐞𝐫 𝟐𝟑𝐫𝐝 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝟐𝟒𝐭𝐡, 𝟐𝟎𝟏𝟕 had to be the final UK dates of the 𝟐𝟎 𝒀𝒆𝒂𝒓𝒔 𝑶𝒇 𝑷𝒍𝒂𝒄𝒆𝒃𝒐 𝑻𝒐𝒖𝒓. But… sadly, several days before Brian got serious voice problems which forced Placebo to cancel upcoming concerts in Portsmouth and Swindon.
The band put out the following statement on their 𝒐𝒇𝒇𝒊𝒄𝒊𝒂𝒍 𝑭𝒂𝒄𝒆𝒃𝒐𝒐𝒌 𝒑𝒂𝒈𝒆:

📢 "It is with great regret that Placebo are unable to play the upcoming shows at Portsmouth Guildhall on 16th October and Swindon Oasis on 17th October this coming week.
"Brian Molko has been suffering from throat problems which has badly affected his voice. The band were reluctant to cancel dates and let the fans down and pressed ahead with the shows in Reading and Cardiff over the weekend but it was clear that Brian was struggling to sing.

"Brian will now see a specialist in London asap and following that diagnosis, we will make further announcements regarding the shows. […] Placebo would like to apologise to the fans for this disappointment and hope for better news soon."

However, Placebo decided to go forward with the 𝐁𝐫𝐢𝐱𝐭𝐨𝐧 𝐀𝐜𝐚𝐝𝐞𝐦𝐲 𝐬𝐡𝐨𝐰𝐬 although Brian hasn’t recovered completely yet. Some songs had even to be rearranged to make them easier for Brian to sing… The guys trusted their devoted fans and hoped for their support and understanding…
I found two nice 𝐑𝐄𝐕𝐈𝐄𝐖𝐒 of one of those concerts – you can get some more details and feel an atmosphere of that very complicated for Brian concert.

It really didn’t matter, dear Brian. The singer was still recovering from a complete loss of voice that occurred two weeks ago, but, recuperating in major part, he was ready for the band’s London date of the tour A Place for Us to Dream, from the name of their latest record.

[…] Going smoother in tone with Loud Like Love, they built a beating climax, rising up to the strong rhythm of For What it’s Worth. Midway through the gig, I know offered a powerful exchange and crossing of guitars between Stefan Olsdal, who was definitely one of the highlights of the night, and Nick Gavrilovic.

As intense as it could be, the music emanated from the stage with unique energy. The high-pitched voice of Molko more often than not blended and got lost behind the strings – among which to note Angela Chan’s violin – and the keys.

Unforgettable was the rockers’ tribute to David Bowie with Without You I’m Nothing. While the ticking beats of the music flew soft and melodic, footage of the smiley face of the Thin White Duke – who featured in and recorded the song with Placebo in 1999 – was projected onto the background, filling more than simple words would do. Ah, one of my all-time favourites again tonight hopefully (hopefully due to the fact that a few previous gigs were cancelled due to Brian having lost his voice a couple of weeks back). As it was, the gig went off without a hitch, albeit with Brian having to perform with less than perfect vocals, having not fully recovered by the time of the sound check.

[…] But the sell-out crowd of nearly 5000 were there for the music, something the band excel at live.
At 8:45 the lights went down and we are treated to the “Every You Every Me (unreleased promo)” video in full on the stage backdrop before the band launched into ‘Pure Morning’. […]

Stefan and Brian, both dressed in black, took residence at the front of the stage with Stefan mixing up instruments from guitar to bass to keyboards throughout. The set list was a cross section of classics from their back catalogue. The songs were interspersed with projected live feeds of the band, videos (‘Without You I’m Nothing’ was a tribute to the unforgettable Thin White Duke) and strobes. Some of the slower mid-section songs really tested Brian’s vocals, his weakness apparent to all in its flatness. […] They return for a two-song encore with Stefan holding aloft his rainbow guitar to mass applause. The backdrop changes to a packet of fags with a Donald Trump effigy and wording of ‘seriously harms you and other around you’ when Brian finally leaves the stage last after a minute fiddling with feedback on his amp – a very R’n’R finish.
So, to summarise – they weren’t at their best (which is understandable), but even like this they were mighty impressive visually. The songs do stand for themselves and the majority of the audience seemed to be having a bloody good time.

Brian asked not to take videos. Basically, he always does but this time there was a serious reason for that. I feel kind of ashamed sharing this video… although to me, it looks and sounds incredibly beautiful and moving…

These words were characteristic of the entire last Placebo world tour with which the band celebrated 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝟐𝟎𝐭𝐡 𝐚𝐧𝐧𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐚𝐫𝐲 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐫𝐞𝐥𝐞𝐚𝐬𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐢𝐫 𝐝𝐞𝐛𝐮𝐭 𝐚𝐥𝐛𝐮𝐦.
And today, we commemorate this amazing and at the same time, perhaps the most touching Placebo ride, which began on October 13, 2016 and ended on October 24, 2017 with 90 concerts across Europe, Australia and Mexico.

Why the most touching?
Because this birthday party didn't have the happiest start. In addition, Brian said in several interviews that it was a big problem for him to think about planning this tour at all and to discuss the list of songs that accompanied his rather difficult life:

We all know it didn't turn out the best. It is likely that Brian's very fragile mental state, along with new medication, caused his mental collapse.
The gig in Aarhus had to end after the first two songs.
Still, how painful it was for all the fans, and not only for them, but especially for Brian and the band, I would like to publish videos that show that Brian tried very hard to explain everything humanly to the people in the crowd. It certainly wasn't like he ran off the stage without a word. And the very next day, Placebo played a perfect show in Copenhagen.

rock musician Chris Cornell, leader of Soundgarden and Audioslave bands, committed suicide in May, and a few weeks later it was the suicide of Chester Bennington, who also lost his life in the fight with depression, which is Brian's and Stefan's lifelong theme.

Two concerts at the 𝐁𝐫𝐢𝐱𝐭𝐨𝐧 𝐀𝐜𝐚𝐝𝐞𝐦𝐲 on 𝐎𝐜𝐭𝐨𝐛𝐞𝐫 𝟐𝟑𝐫𝐝 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝟐𝟒𝐭𝐡, 𝟐𝟎𝟏𝟕 had to be the final UK dates of the 𝟐𝟎 𝒀𝒆𝒂𝒓𝒔 𝑶𝒇 𝑷𝒍𝒂𝒄𝒆𝒃𝒐 𝑻𝒐𝒖𝒓. But… sadly, several days before Brian got serious voice problems which forced Placebo to cancel upcoming concerts in Portsmouth and Swindon.
The band put out the following statement on their 𝒐𝒇𝒇𝒊𝒄𝒊𝒂𝒍 𝑭𝒂𝒄𝒆𝒃𝒐𝒐𝒌 𝒑𝒂𝒈𝒆:

📢  "It is with great regret that Placebo are unable to play the upcoming shows at Portsmouth Guildhall on 16th October and Swindon Oasis on 17th October this coming week.
"Brian Molko has been suffering from throat problems which has badly affected his voice. The band were reluctant to cancel dates and let the fans down and pressed ahead with the shows in Reading and Cardiff over the weekend but it was clear that Brian was struggling to sing.
"Brian will now see a specialist in London asap and following that diagnosis, we will make further announcements regarding the shows. […] Placebo would like to apologise to the fans for this disappointment and hope for better news soon."

However, Placebo decided to go forward with the 𝐁𝐫𝐢𝐱𝐭𝐨𝐧 𝐀𝐜𝐚𝐝𝐞𝐦𝐲 𝐬𝐡𝐨𝐰𝐬 although Brian hasn’t recovered completely yet. Some songs had even to be rearranged to make them easier for Brian to sing… The guys trusted their devoted fans and hoped for their support and understanding… 💓
I found two nice 𝐑𝐄𝐕𝐈𝐄𝐖𝐒 of one of those concerts – you can get some more details and feel an atmosphere of that very complicated for Brian concert.

The singer was still recovering from a complete loss of voice that occurred two weeks ago, but, recuperating in major part, he was ready for the band’s London date of the tour A Place for Us to Dream, from the name of their latest record.
[…] Going smoother in tone with Loud Like Love, they built a beating climax, rising up to the strong rhythm of For What it’s Worth. Midway through the gig, I know offered a powerful exchange and crossing of guitars between Stefan Olsdal, who was definitely one of the highlights of the night, and Nick Gavrilovic.

As intense as it could be, the music emanated from the stage with unique energy. The high-pitched voice of Molko more often than not blended and got lost behind the strings – among which to note Angela Chan’s violin – and the keys.
Unforgettable was the rockers’ tribute to David Bowie with Without You I’m Nothing. While the ticking beats of the music flew soft and melodic, footage of the smiley face of the Thin White Duke – who featured in and recorded the song with Placebo in 1999 – was projected onto the background, filling more than simple words would do. Ah, one of my all-time favourites again tonight hopefully (hopefully due to the fact that a few previous gigs were cancelled due to Brian having lost his voice a couple of weeks back). As it was, the gig went off without a hitch, albeit with Brian having to perform with less than perfect vocals, having not fully recovered by the time of the sound check.
[…] But the sell-out crowd of nearly 5000 were there for the music, something the band excel at live.
At 8:45 the lights went down and we are treated to the “Every You Every Me (unreleased promo)” video in full on the stage backdrop before the band launched into ‘Pure Morning’. […]

Stefan and Brian, both dressed in black, took residence at the front of the stage with Stefan mixing up instruments from guitar to bass to keyboards throughout. The set list was a cross section of classics from their back catalogue. The songs were interspersed with projected live feeds of the band, videos (‘Without You I’m Nothing’ was a tribute to the unforgettable Thin White Duke) and strobes. Some of the slower mid-section songs really tested Brian’s vocals, his weakness apparent to all in its flatness.

[…] They return for a two-song encore with Stefan holding aloft his rainbow guitar to mass applause. The backdrop changes to a packet of fags with a Donald Trump effigy and wording of ‘seriously harms you and other around you’ when Brian finally leaves the stage last after a minute fiddling with feedback on his amp – a very R’n’R finish.
So, to summarise – they weren’t at their best (which is understandable), but even like this they were mighty impressive visually. The songs do stand for themselves and the majority of the audience seemed to be having a bloody good time.

Dear friends, this introduction concerns an interview given by 𝐒𝐓𝐄𝐅𝐀𝐍 𝐎𝐋𝐒𝐃𝐀𝐋 for 𝐃𝐎𝐔𝐁𝐋𝐄 𝐉 𝐑𝐚𝐝𝐢𝐨 during the Australian part of The 20th Anniversary Tour.

📌While in Australia for their recent 20 year anniversary tour, Placebo bassist Stefan Olsdal spoke to Double J's Myf Warhurst about the band's career, and why he's standing up for equal rights.
Music and politics have always been intertwined with Placebo, particularly around the themes of gender and sexuality.
When asked how the band felt about playing the Margaret Court Arena, a venue whose namesake is openly against same sex marriage, Oldsal reflected on how that fits into the band's stance on LGBTQI rights.
“We play a lot of countries and we wouldn't play in these countries if we agreed with the government's policies,” he said. “A lot of places haven't moved as far as I would like in terms of justice and equality. Australia has come a long way but I wish it would come further. I think humankind will look back and think, ‘Why didn't we treat everyone equally? Why didn't we have the same rights?'”
When asked if he will be getting out his rainbow bass for the Australian shows Olsdal confirmed that this was his preferred form of protest, despite the accompanying feeling of being targeted.
“It's my weapon,” he said. “That's the one that I wield around the world because there's work to be done everywhere.
I stand up there and sometimes think I'm going to see a red dot circled around my chest but it's something that I'm willing to stand up for so I stick my neck out, but it's worth it.”

Very strong closing words, what do you think? So what happened at the Margaret Court Arena affair then?
This multi-purpose sports and entertainment venue in Melbourne, Australia is named after one of the world's most famous tennis players, 𝐌𝐚𝐫𝐠𝐚𝐫𝐞𝐭 𝐂𝐨𝐮𝐫𝐭.
However, in the name of Christianity, this woman is fighting against the human rights of LGBT communities and especially against the adoption of a law for same-sex marriage.
According to many celebrities, Margaret Court has damaged Australia's name as an open and respectful country. Her statements were often really over the edge:
⭐ For example her 1990 comment about Martina Navratilova - “a great player but I’d like someone at the top who the younger players can look up to. It’s very sad for children to be exposed to homosexuality. Martina is a nice person. Her life has just gone astray” and her comment for a Christian radio station - „transgenderism was the work of the devil and compared a global plot to promote equal sexual rights to Hitler“.

Many well-known bands of Brian's and Stefan's friends, such as Sigur Rós and LCD Soundsystem, then stood up to protest against the famous tennis player's statements during the 2017 concert season, and Placebo, of course, watched the situation closely.

⭐ "To come out and basically demonise children because of the way they're born - which is essentially what this woman has done - it's pretty outrageous, and I think it's offensive. I can't really tolerate it, to be honest", Olsdal says.
"I know perfectly well that we're playing a venue with her name to it - and she was an amazing tennis player, there's no taking away from that - but I'm still thinking about exactly what we're going to do about it." /.../
"I'm still working on the best way to send out our response to playing at that venue in Melbourne."

Stefan solved this situation in exactly his way:
⭐ "I need your participation for this, I need something from you guys," said Olsdal, holding his bass above his head. "I'm gonna say a name, and I want you guys to say 'fork you'. Can you guys do that for me?" Soon enough, once Olsdal uttered the name 'Margaret Court', the entire crowd joined in chanting 'fork you'."

⭐Dear friends, today I invite you again to the unique place where Placebo played another concert, celebrating 20 years of their career, exactly on the day of the summer solstice - 21.6.2017.

Taormina is a small town in Sicily, one of the most famous Italian islands. It is located on the coast of the Ionian Sea, on a rock at an altitude of 204 meters above sea level and it is one of the most visited Sicilian places. The imposing and still active volcano Etna oversees this human swarm.
The main monument in Taormina and one of the main ones in Sicily is the Greek Theater (Teatro Greco) dating from the 3rd century BC. As you can see in the photo, it is a very impressive and beautiful place and the acoustics of this theater is a real experience for music fans.


Placebo was lucky enough to be part of that atmosphere and enjoy playing in such a beautiful ancient theater.
However, the fans coming to this concert had to respect very strict security measures. Why?
Just a month before this event - on May 22, 2017, there was a terrorist attack in Manchester at the concert of the American singer Ariana Grande. At that time, the concert hall was full of children and their parents. This suicide bomber attack resulted in 23 deaths and more than 100 people was in a very serious life-threatening situation.
That event still brings tears to my eyes today.


However, the organizers of the Placebo concert did not neglect anything and the result was an event that took people's breath away. I found one very beautiful review of the whole concert for you.

📌 Try to imagine something that could never happen: an invasion of grasshoppers, flying pigs, Banksy in the role of Robert Del Naja of Massive Attack, Daft Punk taking off their helmets, Placebo in Taormina.


Placebo are in Taormina. The announcement of a concert of this size, in the far south of the peninsula, has created quite a stir among past and present fans. Yet, nothing was as feared: a few clones of Brian Molko, not even one of Stefan Olsdal, no mess, no brawl. The audience is extremely varied: three children seated in the front row remind us that perhaps not everything is lost in the world.


Before starting, the organizers communicate that the lights are about to go out and that the group would prefer not to see illuminated phones or flashes. Thus, when the stage remains empty and Ion starts broadcasting, the Ancient Theater is completely dark. A moment later, the delirium: paranoid riffs and martial rhythms unmistakably mark the beginning of Pure Morning, during which it is hard to stay calm. “Welcome to our birthday party! Now give us a gift: stand up and dance! ”, This is how Brian Molko introduces himself to Sicily and starts with Loud Like Love.

The great pieces that have ensured that Placebo are still today one of the few bands with an unmistakable imprint follow: Jesus Son, Soulmates, Special Needs, Lazarus. Brian Molko continues to sing and play without ever taking a break, with his pansexual mood, Placebo's trademark able to attract the attention of even David Bowie, to whom the group reserve the performance of Without You I'm Nothing , decisive turning point for the close link between the band and the White Duke.


Here comes the moment of Twenty Years, powerful, desperate and, inevitably, the symbolic piece of the tour. Halfway through the concert Brian Molko can no longer contain himself and blurts out elegantly (elegant he really was) with someone in the front row who is more interested in the screen of the phone than in the show.
“You paid for that front row seat. If you don't care, move behind and give way to someone who really wants to listen ". Roar, resumption of the concert.


The final part is a crescendo of energy and distortions: Special K, Song To Say Goodbye, The Bitter End to conclude, in the second encore, with Running Up That hill, originally by Kate Bush, darkened in a Placebo key. They greet and smile, Stefan Olsdal lowers himself one last time to adjust the effects of the pedal so that while the band disappears behind the columns of the Ancient Theater, the audience is still enveloped by the echo of the reverberation.


"The most important thing about a band name is that you can imagine four thousand people screaming at it in unison," said Brian Molko in the early years of Placebo's life.
In Taormina there were more than 5,000 people screaming that name.
Is that enough? Maybe yes to them, never to the public.

📌 At the end of the concert no damage or unpleasant episodes were counted, everything went smoothly. LiveUnict microphones managed to get backstage to try to catch some little curiosity before the concert began. Well, for dinner Brian, Stefan and the others asked for sushi, panicking collaborators and hostesses who had to look for specific restaurants in the city and in the surrounding areas to please the guests of the ancient theater.
