🔶 On 𝑨𝒖𝒈𝒖𝒔𝒕 8, 1998, 𝑷𝒍𝒂𝒄𝒆𝒃𝒐 𝒔𝒕𝒂𝒓𝒕𝒆𝒅 𝒕𝒉𝒆𝒊𝒓 𝑾𝒊𝒕𝒉𝒐𝒖𝒕 𝒀𝒐𝒖 𝑰'𝒎 𝑵𝒐𝒕𝒉𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝑻𝒐𝒖𝒓 at the Benicassim Festival in Spain 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝒆𝒏𝒅𝒆𝒅 𝒊𝒏 𝑫𝒖𝒃𝒍𝒊𝒏 𝒐𝒏 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝑶𝒄𝒕𝒐𝒃𝒆𝒓 10, 1999. 🔶 Placebo also performed 𝑴𝒂𝒓𝒔 𝑳𝒂𝒏𝒅𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝑷𝒂𝒓𝒕𝒚 for the one and only time during this tour in Belgium at La Botanique, where they performed the longest show on this tour. This amused both the band and the audience 😄

𝓢𝓽𝓮𝓿𝓮: Belgium was pretty good. A lot of them were really good. Australia was good - Sydney, that was a top gig.
𝓢𝓽𝓮𝓯𝓪𝓷: Austria was good.
𝓑𝓻𝓲𝓪𝓷: We also played some great shows in South Africa.


💬 𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐚𝐛𝐨𝐮𝐭 𝐋𝐮𝐱𝐞𝐦𝐛𝐨𝐮𝐫𝐠, 𝐡𝐨𝐰 𝐰𝐚𝐬 𝐢𝐭 𝐠𝐨𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐛𝐚𝐜𝐤 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐝𝐢𝐝 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐞𝐧𝐣𝐨𝐲 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐬𝐡𝐨𝐰 ?
𝓑𝓻𝓲𝓪𝓷: That was tremendous, it was the longest gig ever, 22 tracks.
𝓢𝓽𝓮𝓯𝓪𝓷: The crowd was singing along so loudly I couldn't hear Steve. I had to look at his hands to keep time.
𝓑𝓻𝓲𝓪𝓷: All of our teachers were there too. It's really good being an adult., because you can go back and tell your teachers to f*** off and they laugh.
𝓢𝓽𝓮𝓯𝓪𝓷: Yes, it's a complete role reversal. There was one teacher who took care of the class in the morning, and if you were too late she would send you to the Principal's office. This teacher turned up late, so I got the security guy to throw her out !
𝓑𝓻𝓲𝓪𝓷: You told her she couldn't come into the party ! You also verbally laid into our History teacher who made you writes lines for eating peanuts in class. That was funny.


💬 𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐬𝐭 𝐠𝐢𝐠 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐲𝐞𝐚𝐫 ?
𝓑𝓻𝓲𝓪𝓷: A few in Australia were really painful for me. I couldn't swallow and I felt really sick, and I had to try to get through on antibiotics. It was very very uncomfortable.
𝓢𝓽𝓮𝓿𝓮: Yeah, probably the back end of the Australia tour was the hardest. We were all very tired.
𝓑𝓻𝓲𝓪𝓷: The low point was getting ill and tired, breaking bones and going to hospital and having to cancel V99 (see quote after the interview to read brian's statement about this cancellation). Stef breaking his wrist and me losing the feeling in half of my head, because of a cracked vertebrae.

𝓑𝓻𝓲𝓪𝓷: The oprning of Fabric was terrible. It was shit !
𝓢𝓽𝓮𝓿𝓮: St Kildarein Melbourne was good, and the Brits after show was pretty good too.
𝓢𝓽𝓮𝓯𝓪𝓷: Definitely. Dancing with Annie Lennox at the Eurythmics party, that was a good night.
𝓑𝓻𝓲𝓪𝓷: The usual mess was created at the Brits party definitely. The usual suspects were there and the usual shenanigans went on !
𝓢𝓽𝓮𝓯𝓪𝓷: One of the other best after shows was after the gig at the Irvine Plaza with Bowie in NY. That was a highlight.
𝓑𝓻𝓲𝓪𝓷: That was a mad gig ! Iman was in the audience along with Hazel O'Connor. Tony Visconti as well as Hole and Girls Against Boys. There was definitely a mixture of musicians present. We attract all generations !

💬 𝐖𝐡𝐨 𝐰𝐚𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐛𝐞𝐬𝐭 𝐛𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐬𝐮𝐩𝐨𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐞𝐝 𝐲𝐨𝐮 ?
𝓑𝓻𝓲𝓪𝓷: : Idlewild. They're a great band.
𝓢𝓽𝓮𝓿𝓮: Nice blokes too.
𝓢𝓽𝓮𝓯𝓪𝓷: Six By Seven were great and Flick, who no-one's probably heard of.
𝓑𝓻𝓲𝓪𝓷: Yeah, Flick they're all very young, about 16 - 20 and sound like T-Rex crossed with Radiohead. They toured America with us. I think they're the only Christian rock band that we like !

💬 𝐀𝐧𝐝 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐛𝐞𝐬𝐭 𝐟𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐚𝐥 ?
𝓑𝓻𝓲𝓪𝓷: The Greek festival. It was our first ever gig in Greece, and a headline show which was really cool. There were about 25 000 people really getting into it and as the performance went on it got more and more Spinal Tap. It was a real Spinal Tap rock moment.
𝓢𝓽𝓮𝓿𝓮: yeah, I was topless.
𝓢𝓽𝓮𝓯𝓪𝓷: It was about 90 degrees. That was crazy ! Brian: There were some great festival moments where you'd look over at the side of stage and Michael Stipe would be standing near the monitors.

💦 Nine years ago,on the 3𝒓𝒅 𝑨𝒖𝒈𝒖𝒔𝒕 2013, our beloved band embarked on the 𝑳𝒐𝒖𝒅 𝑳𝒊𝒌𝒆 𝑳𝒐𝒗𝒆 𝒕𝒐𝒖𝒓. 147 concerts in a row on all continents until July 18th 2015.

💦 It was during this tour that Placebo announced the 𝒅𝒆𝒑𝒂𝒓𝒕𝒖𝒓𝒆 𝒐𝒇 𝑺𝒕𝒆𝒗𝒆 𝑭𝒐𝒓𝒓𝒆𝒔𝒕, in February 2015, who wanted to pursue his personal ambitions, leaving the place to 𝑴𝒂𝒕𝒕 𝑳𝒖𝒏𝒏 who finished the tour behind the drums.

💦 The colourful visuals that accompanied the band's stage performance were made in collaboration with 𝑱𝒖𝒍𝒊𝒂𝒏 𝑯𝒐𝒖𝒔𝒆, the same man who did the artwork for Loud Like Love.

Placebo has not refrained from putting in the effort to make sure that the fans get the most out of the visual effects during the concerts.

💦 Julian House was based on the band's desire to change their "𝑒𝑠𝑡𝑎𝑏𝑙𝑖𝑠ℎ𝑒𝑑 𝑎𝑒𝑠𝑡ℎ𝑒𝑡𝑖𝑐" to something more colourful and to add a psychedelic element. Julian took a sci-fi imagery straight out of the 70s/80s and inserted an explosion as "𝐿𝑜𝑢𝑑 𝐿𝑖𝑘𝑒 𝐿𝑜𝑣𝑒 𝑖𝑚𝑝𝑙𝑖𝑒𝑑 𝑡𝑜 [ℎ𝑖𝑚] 𝑠𝑜𝑚𝑒 𝑠𝑜𝑟𝑡 𝑜𝑓 𝑒𝑥𝑝𝑙𝑜𝑠𝑖𝑣𝑒 𝑏𝑢𝑡 𝑐𝑜𝑙𝑜𝑢𝑟𝑓𝑢𝑙 𝑚𝑜𝑚𝑒𝑛𝑡 [...] 𝑎𝑛 𝑎𝑟𝑟𝑖𝑣𝑎𝑙, 𝑎𝑛 𝑒𝑣𝑒𝑛𝑡 ℎ𝑎𝑝𝑝𝑒𝑛𝑖𝑛𝑔."

Exactly ten years ago today, on July 28th, 2012, Placebo went on a short 𝐁𝟑 𝐓𝐎𝐔𝐑, almost three months before their same-titled EP would be released in October 2012.
All in all, 18 concerts, including the festival shows, were planned for the tour. The first one took place on July 28th at 𝑳𝒐𝒘 𝑪𝒐𝒔𝒕 𝑭𝒆𝒔𝒕𝒊𝒗𝒂𝒍 in 𝑺𝒑𝒂𝒊𝒏.

Not everything went smoothly during this tour (as at 𝑭𝒓𝒆𝒒𝒖𝒆𝒏𝒄𝒚 𝑭𝒆𝒔𝒕𝒊𝒗𝒂𝒍 in Austria on August 16th when the show was stopped after the first song). However, Placebo managed to play several brilliant concerts which would be always remembered by the fans as true highlights of the band’s live history.

“Next, we race back to the main stage in order to catch Placebo who are armed with new material in the form of ‘B3’ alongside the now “classic” body of work that they’ve perfected. Their energy is infectious, and it’s good to see them headlining such a credible festival bill (they’ve done it before, here too). Tonight at Sziget, it is very easy to see just how Placebo have been able to graduate from snotty androgynous punks to an internationally recognised and celebrated rock legends. This is signified in the set as well; the band leave out tracks like ‘Nancy Boy’ in favour of the (arguably) more mature (and polished) ‘Infra-Red’ to close things off. Again, it’s just obvious that this band have grown up and developed, and in our opinion that’s no bad thing.”

By the way, on that day Placebo shared the festival scene with the Belgian band 𝐝𝐄𝐔𝐒 whom 𝑩𝒓𝒊𝒂𝒏 called one of his favourite bands and also his personal friends.

“They were THE headliner on Friday. Only a few shows this year in Germany, and one of them at Taubertal. Huge expectations have met the fullest satisfaction. Brian Molko, singer and guitarist and frontman of the band, was fashionably polite during the 90-minute set. In good understandable German he addressed the ladies with “Remember Me” - before Special Needs from the Sleeping With Ghosts album. We will definitely not forget Placebo. The lightshow with five screens above the stage was amazing and perfectly contributed alternative rock by Placebo. As previous albums of the Brits were represented, as so the new album sounded very good.
The release of Battle For The Sun was a great return after a three-year hiatus. The version of Kate Bush’s Running Up That Hill was just fantastic as one of four encores.”

“Although it may be difficult to find a link between the Californian rapper (Snoop Dogg) and Placebo, festivals are there to make communication possible just because the fans of both artists have fun in front of the stage together. And Placebo fans had a lot to write home about. An hour and a half of music by the band in absolutely peak form. Brian Molko has lost nothing of his magnetic charisma and kept a perfect feel of the stage. Steve Forrest, the percussionist who joined the band four years ago, clearly managed to find ground under his feet and now feels entirely confident in the company of Placebo founders. The concert opened with Kitty Litter from the still popular Battle for the Sun, the album most extensively represented during the show, but they also had surprises in store, such as, for example, I Know from their debut album or Meds, originally performed with Alison Mosshart. The second part of the concert started with Running Up That Hill from the repertoire of Kate Bush. Interestingly, just an hour earlier, the song played an important role during the closing ceremony of the Olympic Games. Alongside this cover and pieces like Infra-Red and Post Blue, the encores featured the band's only new piece – B3.”

🎸 On 25 July 2007, 15 years ago, the 𝑷𝒓𝒐𝒋𝒆𝒌𝒕 𝑹𝒆𝒗𝒐𝒍𝒖𝒕𝒊𝒐𝒏 𝑻𝒐𝒖𝒓 began and Placebo was one of the major bands on the festival, which was originally 𝒍𝒂𝒖𝒏𝒄𝒉𝒆𝒅 𝒃𝒚 𝑳𝒊𝒏𝒌𝒊𝒏 𝑷𝒂𝒓𝒌.

🎸 The tour started in 2002 in the United States and continued in Toronto in 2007 and in some European countries in 2008. The aim of the tour was to bring together artists and fans from different styles and genres.

🎸 𝑷𝒓𝒐𝒋𝒆𝒌𝒕 𝑹𝒆𝒗𝒐𝒍𝒖𝒕𝒊𝒐𝒏 gathered artists such as Cypress Hill, Mudvayne, Xzibit, Korn, Snoop Dogg, The Used, My Chemical Romance, Taking Back Sunday, HIM, Placebo, Mindless Self Indulgence, et Chris Cornell.

They had this thing, like I came out one day off the bus, and in front of the buses, there was like this little tent and on the front of it had been spray painted "𝑃𝑙𝑎𝑐𝑒𝑏𝑜 𝐺𝑎𝑧𝑒𝑏𝑜". And they had made their own like little outdoor oasis with truck stop goodies, it was the funniest thing, like a little gnome and a little astroturf and a white picket fence that's about this tall around it, it was so funny. They'd be out there barbecuing and riding their bikes."

🎸 In 2007, 𝑳𝒊𝒏𝒌𝒊𝒏 𝑷𝒂𝒓𝒌 decided to make the tour carbon neutral by donating one dollar from every ticket sold to the forests of America through their Music for Relief Foundation. They also used biodiesel fuel on a majority of their buses, reducing carbon dioxide emissions by 350 tonnes. Information stands were set up to encourage fans to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions. It's really no wonder that Placebo was seduced and accepted Chester's offer to take part in the festival. 𝑴𝒖𝒔𝒊𝒄 𝒇𝒐𝒓 𝑹𝒆𝒍𝒊𝒆𝒇 is a non profit charitable organization founded by Linkin Park which helps aid victims of world catastrophes and combat global warming.

🎸 The festival lasted for 29 concerts and ended on September 3, 2007. Placebo had to adapt their setlist as you will discover in the following quotes. Brian admitted in an interview that the "𝑚𝑒𝑙𝑎𝑛𝑐ℎ𝑜𝑙𝑖𝑐 𝑘𝑖𝑛𝑑 𝑜𝑓 𝑠𝑒𝑡 𝑑𝑖𝑑𝑛'𝑡 𝑟𝑒𝑎𝑙𝑙𝑦 𝑤𝑜𝑟𝑘" because the audience "𝑟𝑒𝑎𝑙𝑙𝑦 𝑤𝑎𝑛𝑡𝑒𝑑 𝑘𝑖𝑛𝑑 𝑜𝑓 𝑟𝑜𝑐𝑘". Not easy to deal with an audience that is not usually yours ! 🙂

🎤 Done halfway, already. It’s kinda flying by. It’s been good. It took us a while to kind of adjust to the crowd, to get the right set list together and kind of fit into the whole way for us to get through to the audience in the best possible way. We tend to be the outsiders, you know, we can’t feel quite comfortable being that. When we started we definitely felt a bit like that. We don’t scream as much as the other bands. We kind of work around that, and I think by the second week we got a good set. We’re getting more reaction from the crowd than the beginning. We play for half an hour in the middle of the day, and it’s usually baking hot with the sunshine. You gotta get people’s attention. A lot of them have never heard of us before.

🎤 It’s a really good vibe backstage. Linkin Park are very approachable – not only are they approachable but they approach you. There are no big egos floating around – it’s great… I was kind of expecting there to be a lot of people running around backstage with bottles of Jack Daniels and ruby sluts hanging off their arms… But it’s been really cool. It hasn’t been that rock-and-roll cliché. Which I’m really happy about, because I’m not a particularly big fan – not a fan at all – of that rock-and-roll cliché.

🎤 Well, we started this tour with a lot of bravado because we’d spent 18 months touring the world, preaching to the choir. We walked out on stage in Seattle dressed in our French designer clothing, like we would in Europe, played our melancholic songs and then went down like a complete lead balloon. We had to really rethink it. It took us about four gigs to find the right set [of songs]. I think we realized that at 5 p.m. in the afternoon Linkin Park and My Chemical Romance fans didn’t want to be wooed with melancholia; they wanted to be slapped across the face with noisy guitars. So we’re doing a very kind of punk rock show featuring songs we haven’t played in years, such as “Pure Morning” and “Nancy Boy.”

◾ 𝑹𝒆𝒂𝒍𝒍𝒚 ? 𝑰 𝒕𝒉𝒐𝒖𝒈𝒉𝒕 𝒚𝒐𝒖 𝒗𝒐𝒘𝒆𝒅 𝒏𝒐𝒕 𝒕𝒐 𝒑𝒍𝒂𝒚 𝒕𝒉𝒐𝒔𝒆 𝒑𝒂𝒓𝒕𝒊𝒄𝒖𝒍𝒂𝒓 𝒔𝒐𝒏𝒈𝒔 𝒂𝒈𝒂𝒊𝒏.
🎤 We don’t play them anymore. They were exhumed. But, it adds to the challenge: How do you play with sincerity a song that you have made a choice to never play again? And because you’re in a particular situation, you have to be flexible and not be precious.

🎉 𝟏𝟎 𝒚𝒆𝒂𝒓𝒔 𝒂𝒈𝒐 𝒕𝒐𝒅𝒂𝒚, it began in 𝑷𝒂𝒓𝒊𝒔 ⭐𝐏𝐥𝐚𝐜𝐞𝐛𝐨 𝐌𝐞𝐫𝐜𝐞𝐝𝐞𝐬-𝐁𝐞𝐧𝐳: '𝐀 𝐑𝐎𝐂𝐊 𝐄𝐯𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐬' 🎸⭐, a mini-tour of only 𝒇𝒊𝒗𝒆 concerts through different 𝑬𝒖𝒓𝒐𝒑𝒆𝒂𝒏 cities that 𝑷𝒍𝒂𝒄𝒆𝒃𝒐 made in collaboration with a famous 𝑮𝒆𝒓𝒎𝒂𝒏 luxury car brand to launch the new 𝑨-𝑪𝒍𝒂𝒔𝒔. On May 23rd 1996, shortly before the release of their self-titled debut album, Placebo started their 🔸𝗙𝗜𝗥𝗦𝗧 𝗕𝗜𝗚 𝗧𝗢𝗨𝗥🔸 with a concert at Luna Theatre in Brussels, Belgium. The band played 159 shows in the UK, Europe and North America. The last gig took place at Battersea Power Station in London on December 22nd 1997.

In the middle of March 2016, “news had just come over”: Placebo confirmed their 20th anniversary tour!
𝐁𝐫𝐢𝐚𝐧 made quite a promising statement about the forthcoming shows:
📢“…Let’s just say there will be songs in the set that I’ve sworn never to play again. I think it’s time that we purposefully acknowledged what a lot of Placebo fans really want to hear. They’ve been very patient with us since we rarely play our most commercially successful material.
A 20-years anniversary tour seems like the right time to do so. That’s our intention. This tour is very much for the fans and a chance for us to revisit a lot of our early material.
So, if you want to see us play songs like ‘Pure Morning’ and ‘Nancy Boy’ which we haven’t played in almost ten years and may not play again, then you’d better come along to these shows! We’ll have some surprises in there too…”

What we tend to do is cover ourselves with quite a few versions of our songs that we've released. One of our first singles, 'Teenage Angst', has been done in piano format, it's been done in the rock format, and it has this stadium rock format. Then we went back to an electric bass led version. So in order for us to remain interested in our back catalogue we often change them and adopt them to how we feel. Sometimes a song when we record it, it's in an embryonic form it tells you ‘Listen, I'm supposed to be played this way.'”

📢𝐁𝐫𝐢𝐚𝐧: I'm sure it helped shape its sonic palette. It was like a kind of rebellion against this more commercial aspect of the band's life. On 𝐍𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐫 𝐋𝐞𝐭 𝐌𝐞 𝐆𝐨, we really had this sincere desire to lay ourselves bare. Every album we've done has been a reaction to the previous one, but on this one I think it was more in response to this rather masturbatory anniversary tour. On the other hand, I also realize that it did our audience a lot of good. It has taught us to accept the euphoria that the fans give us on stage. And this is probably the first time in my life that I've realized that so much, because I've always made music in a very selfish way. It's a necessary means of expression for me. If this tour has taught us anything, it's that there is value in giving pleasure to others, rather than satisfying yourself.

19 years ago today, on March 8th 2003, the "𝗦𝗟𝗘𝗘𝗣𝗜𝗡𝗚 𝗪𝗜𝗧𝗛 𝗚𝗛𝗢𝗦𝗧𝗦" world tour started at Wedgewood Rooms in Portsmouth, UK. It lasted about one and a half years until August 29th 2004 and consisted of 178 shows. The last performance was played at Reading Festival. The average setlist included 19 songs.

One of the concerts was released on the live DVD “Soulmates never die – live in Paris 2003”.

💊“𝐌𝐄𝐃𝐒” 𝐓𝐎𝐔𝐑💊

The “𝐌𝐄𝐃𝐒” 𝐓𝐎𝐔𝐑 started on February 19th 2006 at 100 Rock Festival in Bangkok, Thailand. It was a short gig consisting of only 13 songs. Altogether 177 shows were played during the tour. The last one took place in France on July 12th 2007.
After a very short break Placebo were part the Project Revolution Tour, a music festival in the USA hosted by Linkin Park (July 25th – September 3rd). It was the last time the band played with drummer Steve Hewitt.

These words were characteristic of the entire last Placebo world tour with which the band celebrated 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝟐𝟎𝐭𝐡 𝐚𝐧𝐧𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐚𝐫𝐲 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐫𝐞𝐥𝐞𝐚𝐬𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐢𝐫 𝐝𝐞𝐛𝐮𝐭 𝐚𝐥𝐛𝐮𝐦.
And today, we commemorate this amazing and at the same time, perhaps the most touching Placebo ride, which began on October 13, 2016 and ended on October 24, 2017 with 90 concerts across Europe, Australia and Mexico.

Why the most touching?
Because this birthday party didn't have the happiest start. In addition, Brian said in several interviews that it was a big problem for him to think about planning this tour at all and to discuss the list of songs that accompanied his rather difficult life:

We all know it didn't turn out the best. It is likely that Brian's very fragile mental state, along with new medication, caused his mental collapse.
The gig in Aarhus had to end after the first two songs.
Still, how painful it was for all the fans, and not only for them, but especially for Brian and the band, I would like to publish videos that show that Brian tried very hard to explain everything humanly to the people in the crowd. It certainly wasn't like he ran off the stage without a word. And the very next day, Placebo played a perfect show in Copenhagen.
