🔸 For this rock event, the 𝑹𝒐𝒄𝒌 𝑬𝒏 𝑺𝒆𝒊𝒏𝒆 𝒇𝒆𝒔𝒕𝒊𝒗𝒂𝒍, which takes place at the gates of Paris, Placebo was headlining with Greenday, Sigur Ros, Noel Gallagher, the Black Keys and other bands on August 24, 2012.

For the first time that night, they played, for the French audience, B3 from the brand new EP that is about to be released "in September" as Brian says in the following interview. But B3EP was released a tiny month later, on 15 October 2012.

A rather light and relaxed interview, where Brian seems a bit nervous but also very happy to be there. I find some of the interviewer's questions a bit inappropriate, but that doesn't spoil the mood.

📢 (𝘓𝘢𝘶𝘨𝘩𝘴) It's our new single which will be part of an EP that will be released in September. We went into the studio to record a single and we thought it had been a long time since we had released songs for the fans, so we decided to release a five track EP, including four original 𝑃𝑙𝑎𝑐𝑒𝑏𝑜 tracks. We got on so well with our new producer, 𝐴𝑑𝑎𝑚 𝑁𝑜𝑏𝑙𝑒, who produced the last DEUS album, that we thought: "Come on. We really have the feeling we already started working on our new album". We think that we do already have three or four tracks recorded for it and we'll get back in the studio in October to finish the 7th album. We hope it'll be released next spring. Tonight, we're going to play our new single for the first time in France.

📢 Not necessarily dark but... 𝐵𝑎𝑡𝑡𝑙𝑒 𝐹𝑜𝑟 𝑇ℎ𝑒 𝑆𝑢𝑛 was a very rock'n'roll album, a bit magnificent, wide-screen. It's important for us not to do the same thing on every album. The way we recorded it changed. We used to have a very classical approach for 𝐵𝑎𝑡𝑡𝑙𝑒 𝐹𝑜𝑟 𝑇ℎ𝑒 𝑆𝑢𝑛. Now, we're working with a producer who is younger than we are, who grew up with computers.

📢 Yeah, yeah. It's very interesting because the older producers that we've worked with had to adapt to computers but our producer, 𝐴𝑑𝑎𝑚 𝑁𝑜𝑏𝑙𝑒, is 30 years old. He grew up with them. So now we use our iPhones, iPads and things like that. It's a completely different process. So it's kind of a renewal through technology.

📢 Of course I always loved music that makes me cry. But why not ? There's some kind of beauty in it. I love music that makes me cry but also that makes me feel happy to get that particular feeling. For example, one of my favorite songs is 𝑁𝑒 𝑀𝑒 𝑄𝑢𝑖𝑡𝑡𝑒 𝑃𝑎𝑠 by 𝐽𝑎𝑐𝑞𝑢𝑒𝑠 𝐵𝑟𝑒𝑙.

13 years ago today, on May 9th 2009, the ♦️“𝐁𝐀𝐓𝐓𝐋𝐄 𝐅𝐎𝐑 𝐓𝐇𝐄 𝐒𝐔𝐍” 𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐥𝐝 𝐭𝐨𝐮𝐫♦️ started with a show at O2 Academy in Sheffield, UK. It kept Placebo on the road for almost one and a half years. The last concert took place at O2 Academy Brixton, also UK, and was filmed for the live DVD “We come in pieces”. Altogether the tour consisted of 156 gigs.

This great film very sensitively captures the atmosphere of Placebo's Asian tour in August 2009.
Its beginning is very sad, Brian collapses on stage in Osaka after playing the first song. And then the director gives us an insight into the story that took place before this collapse.
During beautiful shots of Asian cities, we hear Brian's charming voice telling us how he felt when they arrived in Asia after five months of touring Europe.
The plan was 5 concerts in 5 countries in just 12 days.
Few of us can imagine it ...


🔸 The very next day after arriving in Tokyo, the guys got up at five in the morning so they could be on the Tokyo radio show at seven. They were very surprised by the amount of fans who came out to meet their favourite band in person.

🔸 Then followed the trip to Taiwan. Fans at the airport took the band's breath away.
At least a hundred people welcomed the Placebo band at the airport.
...How is it possible that they know us here?...
Although the gig and the audience were absolutely perfect, Brian admitted that he was getting very tired.
His days were marked by departures and arrivals and it is terrible for a person who has an essential fear of flying.

🔸 The band is flying back to Japan. The next show is the Summer Sonic Festival in Tokyo and Osaka to finish the Asian tour. In Brian's words „...𝐼𝑡'𝑠 𝑏𝑒𝑒𝑛 𝑜𝑛𝑒 𝑜𝑓 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑚𝑜𝑠𝑡 𝑎𝑚𝑎𝑧𝑖𝑛𝑔 𝑒𝑥𝑝𝑒𝑟𝑖𝑒𝑛𝑐𝑒𝑠 𝑡ℎ𝑎𝑡 𝐼'𝑣𝑒 𝑒𝑣𝑒𝑟 ℎ𝑎𝑑, 𝑏𝑢𝑡 𝑎𝑙𝑠𝑜 𝑜𝑛𝑒 𝑜𝑓 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑚𝑜𝑠𝑡 𝑠𝑡𝑟𝑒𝑠𝑠𝑓𝑢𝑙..."

🔸 I found a statement from Brian and the band about this sad event that caused Placebo to cancel their North American tour:
💬🔸 "When you watch the footage it's kind of scary. I was in and out of consiousness for a good few hours after the actual collapse," he reveals. "Two days before the show in question, I had a gastric virus that just emptied me and that, combined with travelling and tour fatigue, made my body give up. It was definitely exhaustion.

We would firstly like to thank you for all your kind words and messages of support regarding Brian’s health after fainting at the show in Osaka, Japan, yesterday.

It is always incredibly disappointing when a show cannot take place for any reason, particularly on this occasion due to Brian being unwell, as we have looked forward for such a long time to these shows in Japan!

We have undertaken a gruelling and intensive schedule over the last few months and the last couple of weeks alone played 5 countries in 9 days. Brian picked up a virus which coupled with jet lag and exhaustion caused his collapse on stage. Thanks to prompt and professional care Brian is recovering well.

We would like to extend our grateful thanks and sincere apologies to the fans who made a huge effort travelling to see us in Osaka, especially after long queue’s in the heavy rain. We would also like to extend many thanks and apologies to the promoters, Creative Man, at Summer Sonic for all their help and understanding under difficult circumstances.

We are all the more devastated after such an amazing show in Tokyo on Saturday where the crowd was incredible. We were so excited to be back in Japan after a few years away and we were reminded what a very special place Japan is to us.

"We Come In Pieces" is a recording of Placebo concert from Brixton Academy in London 2010 at the end of their world tour in support of the album "Battle For The Sun" released previous year.

He’s an English film director known by his work in music, fashion, beauty industry and commercials. Charlie's creative work for Placebo is very long. In addition to the aforementioned documentary, he has made several song videos, such as Exit Wounds, A Million Little Pieces, Placebo videos from events for Mercedes Benz and, above all, a film that is still carefully hidden from fans - Placebo: Alt Russia.


⭐𝑨𝒏𝒅 𝒘𝒉𝒂𝒕 𝒅𝒊𝒅 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒅𝒊𝒓𝒆𝒄𝒕𝒐𝒓 𝒉𝒊𝒎𝒔𝒆𝒍𝒇 𝒔𝒂𝒚 𝒂𝒃𝒐𝒖𝒕 𝒉𝒊𝒔 𝒄𝒐𝒍𝒍𝒂𝒃𝒐𝒓𝒂𝒕𝒊𝒐𝒏 𝒘𝒊𝒕𝒉 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒃𝒂𝒏𝒅?⭐

"I've been working with Placebo since 2008. I was brought in by Alex Weston their manager to make something of the band's personal footage when they recorded Battle for the Sun. I edited a film together that they liked and it went from there. It was a time when YouTube and video in general was becoming more and more important and Alex wanted someone to make several different types of films for the new album campaign. I started then making everything from interviews for their EPK to behind the scenes videos of their rehearsals and a small multicam shoot of their showcase of that album. I then edited all of that footage into a short 10 minute documentary aiming to be shown on Channel 4 in the UK when they had a late night music show called 4Music. After that was picked up by Channel 4 and was aired I went to Alex and pitched a feature documentary that became Coming Up for Air that was premiered at Sundance London in 2012. 📌 A film that documents Placebo’s world tour in 2009 and 2010, Charlie Targett-Adams’ Coming Up For Air is essential viewing for fans of the band.
To promote their album ‘Battle for the Sun’, music band Placebo embarked on a lengthy tour that saw them playing diverse locations all over the globe. The film follows the band on tour, illustrating a life of travelling, preparation, performances and interviews…
Placebo: Coming Up For Air is a documentary that is based solely on the tour, rather than being a biographical look at the band. This is not to say that elements of the band’s history are not touched upon under the wider remit. Nonetheless, the emphasis remains on their tour and aspects relating to this.


Charlie Targett-Adams crafts the film well. There appears to be a considered method to how the documentary pans out. Different topics are compartmentalised so that each area is dealt with in its own segment.
Owing to this, the film feels like it has more of a narrative than some other documentaries.
Throughout the film, the band members are interviewed about touring, their music, and dealing with the side effects of their profession.
Unsurprisingly, Brian Molko dominates in terms of screen time. Insights offered by Molko and other members of the band are interesting for the most part.
Perhaps most fascinating are the scenes focused on drummer Steve Forrest. As a relative newcomer, his views seem both objective and subjective in talking about the band and the impact the tour has had on him personally.📌

Yes, being on tour for so long is a very exhausting for the band, both physically and mentally. Especially young Steve, our sunshine boy, felt very exhausted at the end of the tour. So it was very brave of him to vent his emotions in this video.

"There are a lot of really intense moments [on the DVD documentary]. There was a bit where I had a really big breakdown at the end of the tour. We decided to leave it in, since it shows a lot of the realness of what we went through. The sad and dark shit show people what it’s really like on tour. But there are also the good times, when we’re a family and having fun. It shows both sides of it. People want to see what's really going on, so we’re happy to show them that. There are a lot of really intimate moments in there that you wouldn’t normally see."

"Besides capturing Placebo’s final tour performance at London’s Brixton Academy, “We Came in Pieces” also features a short film called “Trigger Happy Hands” as well as a documentary, “Coming Up For Air,” directed by Charlie Targett-Adams.
“We just kind of let him have pretty much access all areas,” Olsdal recalls. “Some bits in there are still uncomfortable for us to view, but a the same time it shows what life is like on the road. It’s not all fun and games; there’s good days and there’s times when the weight of the world crashes on you, when you’re flying 13 hours and get right off the plane and have a show that night, and you can’t put on the show you expect from yourself and that you want to give the people. It shows that side of touring life as well.”

On September 29, 2009, the "𝑩𝒂𝒕𝒕𝒍𝒆 𝑭𝒐𝒓 𝑻𝒉𝒆 𝑺𝒖𝒏 𝑻𝒐𝒖𝒓" arrived in 𝑴𝒆𝒙𝒊𝒄𝒐 where Placebo performed for the second time at the 𝑽.𝑭.𝑮. 𝑨𝒓𝒆𝒏𝒂 in 𝑮𝒖𝒂𝒅𝒂𝒍𝒂𝒋𝒂𝒓𝒂, 𝑱𝒂𝒍𝒊𝒔𝒄𝒐. Organized by a very famous cola brand, the show was promoted under the slogan "𝒂𝒏𝒐𝒕𝒉𝒆𝒓 𝒕𝒚𝒑𝒊𝒄𝒂𝒍 𝒄𝒐𝒏𝒄𝒆𝒓𝒕" and was totally free. Along with 𝑷𝒍𝒂𝒄𝒆𝒃𝒐, the 𝑨𝒓𝒈𝒆𝒏𝒕𝒊𝒏𝒆𝒂𝒏 band 𝑩𝒂𝒃𝒂𝒔𝒐́𝒏𝒊𝒄𝒐𝒔 played as special guests. This was also 𝑷𝒍𝒂𝒄𝒆𝒃𝒐's first concert after they took a few weeks of a well-deserved break due to the sad incident the previous month in which, victim of exhaustion, 𝑩𝒓𝒊𝒂𝒏 𝑴𝒐𝒍𝒌𝒐 fainted on stage during his performance at the 𝑺𝒖𝒎𝒎𝒆𝒓 𝑺𝒐𝒏𝒊𝒄 festival in 𝑶𝒔𝒂𝒌𝒂, 𝑱𝒂𝒑𝒂𝒏. 💔

Fortunately, this had no major consequences on 𝑩𝒓𝒊𝒂𝒏's health and he fully recovered so they were able to perform the concerts they had planned to offer in 𝑴𝒆𝒙𝒊𝒄𝒐.

The long awaited day of their concert arrived and finally shortly after 10:30 pm 𝑷𝒍𝒂𝒄𝒆𝒃𝒐 took the stage of the 𝑽.𝑭.𝑮. 𝑨𝒓𝒆𝒏𝒂 to enchant more than 12 thousand people who had come to the event. I found a very good review that I want to share with you:

✨📃"The first night of their Mexican tour was spent in Guadalajara — Birmingham to Mexico City's London. At midday, as Placebo arrive in mini-vans at the 12,000 capacity VF Arena, a gleaming white, spanking new-looking edifice a few miles outside town along a dusty highway, there are already hordes of fans waiting for them.

There's a moment in Guadalajara, though, when Stefan seems to be removed from the moment. Tall, thin and statuesque, he appears to drift off for a spell, thinking.

🔹Last year as part of the 𝑷𝒍𝒂𝒄𝒆𝒃𝒐 "𝒗𝒊𝒓𝒕𝒖𝒂𝒍 𝒔𝒖𝒎𝒎𝒆𝒓 𝒕𝒐𝒖𝒓" which they called "𝑳𝒐𝒔𝒕 𝑻𝒂𝒑𝒆𝒔" and which consisted of eight shows filmed at different festivals over the 24 years of the band, this concert in 𝑮𝒖𝒂𝒅𝒂𝒍𝒂𝒋𝒂𝒓𝒂 was streamed on their official 𝒀𝒐𝒖𝑻𝒖𝒃𝒆 channel on September 4, 2020. In the reminder published on their social networks the day before the streaming, 𝑷𝒍𝒂𝒄𝒆𝒃𝒐 wrote:

When I read this, I remembered an anecdote I heard on a 𝑴𝒆𝒙𝒊𝒄𝒂𝒏 radio station that happened precisely during the soundcheck of this concert:

A girl was asked to cover this gig along with a colleague, when they arrived at the 𝑽.𝑭.𝑮. 𝑨𝒓𝒆𝒏𝒂, the two heard that 𝑷𝒍𝒂𝒄𝒆𝒃𝒐 was doing their soundcheck, so they entered the place and after walking through some corridors they found that 𝑩𝒓𝒊𝒂𝒏 𝑴𝒐𝒍𝒌𝒐 was only a few meters away from them. So they started to take pictures of him and when 𝑩𝒓𝒊𝒂𝒏 noticed it, he turned to see them very angry and asked security to take them away. The girl who went through this experience - and who told this anecdote -, said that honestly since then she didn't like 𝑷𝒍𝒂𝒄𝒆𝒃𝒐 very much anymore.

Well, I think for some reason that soundcheck was really bad and that affected the mood of someone. 😅🤭🤭

🔹If you manage to take your eyes off the band for some little moments during the concert, you will notice that photographer 𝑺𝒄𝒂𝒓𝒍𝒆𝒕 𝑷𝒂𝒈𝒆 is taking pictures from the back of the stage. She also did a photo shoot with 𝑷𝒍𝒂𝒄𝒆𝒃𝒐 in the streets of 𝑮𝒖𝒂𝒅𝒂𝒍𝒂𝒋𝒂𝒓𝒂 and one of these images was the cover of 𝑲𝒆𝒓𝒓𝒂𝒏𝒈 𝑴𝒂𝒈𝒂𝒛𝒊𝒏𝒆 in December 2009. You can see part of the photo shoot in this video:

This gig at LG Arena Birmingham took place on December 8, 2009 and was exceptional in its performance. The show was carefully rehearsed with a small orchestra of musicians and choir members. Maybe because of the approaching Christmas, maybe because the concert was the first in a row ... maybe because of the DVD that was most likely made at this concert and never released.
I couldn't find any more information, but what I want to share with you today is a very nice review of this event and also a few videos that are definitely worth seeing.

🔸𝐏𝐥𝐚𝐜𝐞𝐛𝐨, 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐇𝐨𝐫𝐫𝐨𝐫𝐬 & 𝐒𝐢𝐥𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐮𝐧 𝐏𝐢𝐜𝐤𝐮𝐩𝐬 𝐋𝐢𝐯𝐞 @ 𝐁𝐢𝐫𝐦𝐢𝐧𝐠𝐡𝐚𝐦 𝐋𝐆 𝐀𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐚, 𝐃𝐞𝐜𝐞𝐦𝐛𝐞𝐫 𝟖, 𝟐𝟎𝟎𝟗, 𝐑𝐞𝐯𝐢𝐞𝐰: 𝐒𝐭𝐞𝐯𝐞 𝐁𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐦𝐚𝐧🔸

When I’ve interviewed bands in the past, one question that has never failed to stop and make musicians think is: ‘What’s the best gig line-up that you’ve ever seen, including both the headline act + supports?’ The reason that I mention this, is that because tonight, with a bill including Placebo as headliners + The Horrors and Silversun Pickups in support, this could easily turn out to be one of the best gig line-ups that I’ve ever seen in all my gig-going years! /.../
The show has been downsized from a 15,000 capacity to a 4,000 capacity, due to the small number of tickets sold. Although huge in Europe, it would seem that in the UK, Placebo still remain a cult concern – but to be honest with you and like many other devoted fans here in attendance, we all agree that it will be a privilege to be so close to the band and see them in more intimate surroundings anyway./.../


Interestingly, in-between the support acts on Placebo’s Winter Tour dates, a Short Film Festival is being screened before the gig and during the artist changeovers on the main stage screens. “The ShortsTV Live Music Film Festival, launched at the Paris show on the 24th October, features the work of 8 highly talented international film makers for which Placebo themselves shortlisted.” The 8 short movies are competing with one another and fans can vote @ www.placeboworld.co.uk for their favourite film, with one eventually being named ‘ShortsTV Live Music Film Festival Winner’. A DVD of the films is also available to buy and part of the profit from the sale of the DVD goes to the Somaly Mam charity, a non-profit organisation dedicated to fighting the $12billion per year sex-trafficking industry./.../


After two highly enjoyable and rewarding supports + a couple more Short Films, at 9.10pm, it’s time for the main event – the elegiac alt.rock of one of my all-time favourites, Placebo! Building tension and excitement, the artwork for the trio’s latest and sixth record, Battle For The Sun, is beamed directly onto a large white curtain, before slinky silhouettes slowly begin to appear and the drape drops to the floor revealing the band. The first thing that hits you, is the lavish stage production – no expense has been spared and Placebo have really gone to town this time around. With a spotless white floor, banks of bright lights, slick / sophisticated arthouse films being screened and both Brian + Stefan looking dapper (Stefan wearing a rather fetching silver suit and Brian sporting a crisp black shirt, eye makeup and lip-gloss), it all looks very professional and is a vision of magnificence that will no doubt be a live spectacle to remember!


Starting with a heavy-duty and gutsy For What It’s Worth, the throbbing brute force of the guitars and needling riffage soon gives way to the coup de grace and Placebo’s USP, Brian’s voice. As he sings: “And no one cares when you’re down in the gutter, got no friends, got no lover,” you realise that it has long been his distinctive nasal delivery and inflection that adds so much magic and mystery to the group’s music./.../

Although still exploring the human condition, albeit without the brash sexual androgyny and drug excess of Placebo’s original archetypal musical habitat (Brian is now the proud father of a son), much has been made about the band’s overhauled / recalibrated sound and the almost sunshine optimism that saturates their cache of new Technicolor songs. With Brian stating that “Battle For The Sun is Placebo's first album with a single unifying theme” – so much so, that it could even be seen as a riposte to the pained, forlorn and darkened despair of previous effort, the magnificent, Meds.


Perhaps this is why the group are keen to promote these tracks over a lot of the oldies, opting to play yet more recent music in the shape of liquid gold laments, Speak In Tongues and Follow The Cops Back Home – the latter being a signature and butterflies-in-the-stomach ballad, that Placebo have always done oh so very well! Just as I begin to wonder if any classic singles will be dispensed and if the band are planning to revisit all corners of their career, the aerodynamic and mind-blowing Every You Every Me stutters into life to deafening applause! Onstage, you can’t take your eyes off either Brian or Stefan for a millisecond, as they dart and zigzag all over the place, toting their guitars like dangerous weapons – backed-up with a tattoo-torsoed powerhouse on the drums in newly-recruited Steve Forrest, whose chemistry together, guarantees that they are all on the same musical page. A silk-spun Special Needs, sees Brian in full-voice, before a knife-edged and ocean-deep Breathe Underwater has him screaming: “I’m coming up for air, I wanna see another dawn.” Only after prising an introspective Happy You’re Gone out of thin air, does Brian utter any words to the crowd: “Thank You Ladies & Gentlemen, this is the first date of our UK Tour and for those of you who thought that we’d gotten too big for our boots when we had 6 musicians onstage, well tonight, we have 14 people!” He then jokes, “The difference is though, is that we’re chancers and they’ve actually learnt how to play their instruments… We’re very happy to be here!”


Following more cheers, a militant Julien is played before The Never-Ending Why, prior to which Brian says: “After despair comes redemption – this is a Buddhist song,” clasping his hands together in prayer. Blind, Devil In The Details, a storming Meds featuring the harrowing refrain: “Baby, did you forget to take your Meds?” and a scathing Song To Say Goodbye, take us to the end of the main set, which evidently, has been carefully tailored to favour the aforementioned albums, Battle For The Sun and Meds./.../


After a brief video interlude featuring a body-painted ballerina, for the encore, three of my most prized Placebo songs are played in quick succession; Bright Lights is a slice of pop perfection with a mallowy chorus that goes: “Because a heart that hurts is a heart that works.” Special K races along without a care in the world, whilst during a rabid and ravenous Bitter End, the final: “See you at the bitter end,” is wrung-out from Brian’s exhausted and exhilarated body and left to penetrate and recoil around the arena. Thinking that the show is over, a lot of people begin to leave ready to brave the cold winter night. But for those of us who do decide to stay, patience is a virtue, as we’re treated to a second encore featuring a brand new, freshly-squeezed, Rage Against The Machine-style song called Trigger Happy, which sees Brian wrathfully intoning: “The world’s an unforgiving place, we’ve all heard this before, but we want hospitals and equal rights, instead of fucking wars!” Then it’s a heat-seeking Infra-Red complete with the predatory lyric: “Someone call the ambulance, there’s gonna be an accident. I’m coming up on Infra-Red, there is no running that can hide you, ‘cause I can see in the dark.” Before the band go out on a high, with a chiselled Taste In Men and canons firing confetti into the applauding audience.


“Still growing musically and expanding their sound,” Placebo are going to be around for a long time yet!
