⬛ 𝐋𝐨𝐬𝐞𝐫𝐬 is a London-based electro rock band, formed in 2007 by 𝐄𝐝𝐝𝐲 𝐓𝐞𝐦𝐩𝐥𝐞-𝐌𝐨𝐫𝐫𝐢𝐬 and 𝐓𝐨𝐦 𝐁𝐞𝐥𝐥𝐚𝐦𝐲. Their first album was 𝐵𝑒𝑎𝑢𝑡𝑖𝑓𝑢𝑙 𝐿𝑜𝑠𝑒𝑟𝑠, followed by 3 albums: 𝐴𝑛𝑑 𝑆𝑜 𝑊𝑒 𝑆ℎ𝑎𝑙𝑙 𝑁𝑒𝑣𝑒𝑟 𝑃𝑎𝑟𝑡 in 2013, ...𝐴𝑛𝑑 𝑆𝑜 𝑊𝑒 𝑆ℎ𝑎𝑙𝑙 𝑁𝑒𝑣𝑒𝑟 𝑃𝑎𝑟𝑡 𝑇𝑤𝑜 in 2014 and finally 𝐻𝑜𝑤 𝑇𝑜 𝑅𝑢𝑖𝑛 𝑂𝑡ℎ𝑒𝑟 𝑃𝑒𝑜𝑝𝑙𝑒'𝑠 𝐹𝑢𝑡𝑢𝑟𝑒𝑠 in 2016.

⬛ 𝐄𝐝𝐝𝐲 𝐓𝐞𝐦𝐩𝐥𝐞-𝐌𝐨𝐫𝐫𝐢𝐬 ,the man of many talents (producer, DJ, radio host and TV host) is a good friend of 𝐁𝐫𝐢𝐚𝐧's. They met in 1998 on a Placebo MTV special. 𝐏𝐥𝐚𝐜𝐞𝐛𝐨 asked Eddy to interview them, and he was touched.

💬 That was the first time I actually met them. I'd seen them playing before in a gig, I'd seen them already at festivals but MTV was where we first met, in 1998. It was a Placebo special on MTV. But I think they kind of liked my vibe and they asked MTV: 'Can Eddy do the interview ?' So I was very touched. And that was the first time we met. They played a gig and I did the interview with Brian, Stef and Steve at that time. And then Brian suggested that we went to a pub afterwards and had a few drinks, a chat, exchanged numbers and stay touched and over the years we became friends.

⬛ Big fan of Jane's Addiction, 𝐄𝐝𝐝𝐲 always wanted to cover this song with electronic sounds. Once the recording was done, the question was who would provide the vocals for the song. And this is the story of how 𝐁𝐫𝐢𝐚𝐧 was selected:

💬 We first felt that Brian would overshadow us, so prepared to contact Robert, but we then switched sides, I think, because were both such huge Placebo fans and really relished the chance to work with Brian. But it was only a snowballs chance in hell, Brian was a busy man. I texted him and he replied that he knew and loved that song, but couldn’t make any promises. I sent the track, and within 24 hours had a hilarious message back saying: “I love it. I’m doing it. I won’t let you use anybody else on this, I’m free on ONE DAY this year, and I’m coming to your studio”.

He did. With a cold. But it was now or never. Brian had this incredible tea called ‘Throat Coat’, or something, an American, medicinal brew containing ‘slippery elm bark’. I tasted some and it was like magic! It literally coats the back of your throat in this yummy, slippery stuff, so you don’t get that horrid scratchy feeling from a sore throat. Brian said it’s the ‘singers’ best kept secret’. That combined with the brandy he sent me off to buy -purely for medicinal purposes – in miniature bottles did the trick and Brian laid down, I think, one of his best ever vocals. We really stretched him and he rocked it like the true pro he is.

I don’t think Brian has ever recorded a vocal in such scummy conditions, in front of a multi-stained, upturned sofa, masquerading as an impromptu vocal booth in the Coopers control room. Now I look forward to the day he sings it live with us.

⬛ On the Losers' Bandcamp, you can read this anecdote, which is actually quite hilarious:

💬 The album features very special guest Brian Molko from Placebo singing on Losers cover of Jane Addiction’s Summertime Rolls’, the instrumental of which Eddy and Tom sent to Brian to consider putting the vocals onto. Within 24 hours of hearing the track Brian called the Losers to threaten them…..” If you let anyone else sing on this track I’ll have them killed !” Thankfully Robert Harvey of The Music, lives on.

For the song 𝑺𝒖𝒎𝒎𝒆𝒓𝒕𝒊𝒎𝒆 𝑹𝒐𝒍𝒍𝒔 , the electro is very close to the sounds of the early 80s, a bit like 𝑶𝒓𝒄𝒉𝒆𝒔𝒕𝒓𝒂𝒍 𝑴𝒂𝒏𝒐𝒆𝒖𝒗𝒓𝒆 𝑰𝒏 𝑻𝒉𝒆 𝑫𝒂𝒓𝒌. Which makes this song in particular a UFO among the other tracks (𝘸𝘦𝘭𝘭... 𝘵𝘩𝘢𝘵'𝘴 𝘫𝘶𝘴𝘵 𝘮𝘺 𝘰𝘱𝘪𝘯𝘪𝘰𝘯 😊 ). ◾

𝐒𝐔𝐌𝐌𝐄𝐑𝐓𝐈𝐌𝐄 𝐑𝐎𝐋𝐋𝐒 is a collaboration of Brian Molko and a British band 𝐋𝐨𝐬𝐞𝐫𝐬. Originally, the song is by 𝐉𝐚𝐧𝐞'𝐬 𝐀𝐝𝐝𝐢𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 from their debut studio album “Nothing's shocking” (1988).

⭐️Today we celebrate the 11th anniversary of the cover’s release as a 𝒔𝒊𝒏𝒈𝒍𝒆 (June 12th, 2011) but several months earlier, on September 12th, 2010, it was first out on Losers’ album “Beautiful Losers”.

Eddy Temple Morris is a British musician, DJ, record producer and TV presenter. He hosted London radio station XFM's specialist show The Remix for 15 years, before moving it to Soho Radio. He joined Virgin Radio UK in 2017 and currently presents mid-mornings on weekdays. Eddy is a “dance floor provocateur of the highest order. He coined the phrase ‘Ibiza Rocks’, was their first resident and has been largely credited with seducing a generation of rockers to loosen their belts and think with their hips.” (𝑆𝑡𝑒𝑟𝑒𝑜𝐵𝑜𝑎𝑟𝑑, 𝐽𝑢𝑙𝑦 2010) Another half of Losers is 𝑻𝒐𝒎 𝑩𝒆𝒍𝒍𝒂𝒎𝒚, a keyboard, FX pedal and guitar player.


The 𝐒𝐓𝐎𝐑𝐘 of how Summertime Rolls came into being is quite impressive.
📢𝐄𝐝𝐝𝐲 𝐓𝐞𝐦𝐩𝐥𝐞-𝐌𝐨𝐫𝐫𝐢𝐬: “I'm a massive Jane's Addiction fan, and Perry Farrell, their lead singer, loves his electronic music. I always wanted to cover this electronically, and knew that it would be the last track on the album, so that, in a sense, the album would sonically follow a dynamic 'M' shape and leave you with this. […]
I played bass on this and Tom came up with the amazing guitar-like sounds on his laptop, and maybe using one of the array of synths in his collection.
When we finished, we thought about vocals and considered sending it to Perry Farrell to revoice it. I had a connection through the Hybrid boys, who've worked with him closely. But we kinda wanted it to be more 'ours' and felt a UK vocalist would be better. That left us with two choices, who we felt could do Perry's vocal justice. Brian Molko of Placebo, who I knew, and Robert Harvey of The Music, who my friend Danny McNamara knew.
We first felt that Brian would overshadow us, so prepared to contact Robert, but we then switched sides, I think, because were both such huge Placebo fans and really relished the chance to work with Brian. But it was only a snowballs chance in hell, Brian was a busy man. I texted him and he replied that he knew and loved that song but couldn't make any promises. I sent the track, and within 24 hours had a hilarious message back saying: "I love it. I'm doing it. I won't let you use anybody else on this, I'm free on ONE DAY this year, and I'm coming to your studio".
He did. With a cold. But it was now or never. Brian had this incredible tea called 'Throat Coat', or something, an American, medicinal brew containing 'slippery elm bark'. I tasted some and it was like magic! It literally coats the back of your throat in this yummy, slippery stuff, so you don't get that horrid scratchy feeling from a sore throat. Brian said it's the 'singers' best kept secret'. That combined with the brandy he sent me off to buy - purely for medicinal purposes - in miniature bottles did the trick and Brian laid down, I think, one of his best ever vocals. We really stretched him, and he rocked it like the true pro he is.
I don't think Brian has ever recorded a vocal in such scummy conditions, in front of a multi-stained, upturned sofa, masquerading as an impromptu vocal booth in the Coopers control room. Now I look forward to the day he sings it live with us.”

𝑬𝒅𝒅𝒚 𝑻𝒆𝒎𝒑𝒍𝒆-𝑴𝒐𝒓𝒓𝒊𝒔 is a British musician, DJ, record producer and TV presenter. He hosted London radio station XFM's specialist show The Remix for 15 years, before moving it to Soho Radio. He joined Virgin Radio UK in 2017 and currently presents mid-mornings on weekdays. Eddy is a “dance floor provocateur of the highest order. He coined the phrase ‘Ibiza Rocks’, was their first resident and has been largely credited with seducing a generation of rockers to loosen their belts and think with their hips.” (𝑆𝑡𝑒𝑟𝑒𝑜𝐵𝑜𝑎𝑟𝑑, 𝐽𝑢𝑙𝑦 2010) Another half of Losers is 𝑻𝒐𝒎 𝑩𝒆𝒍𝒍𝒂𝒎𝒚, a keyboard, FX pedal and guitar player.

🔺 The 𝐒𝐓𝐎𝐑𝐘 of how Summertime Rolls came into being is quite impressive.
𝐄𝐝𝐝𝐲 𝐓𝐞𝐦𝐩𝐥𝐞-𝐌𝐨𝐫𝐫𝐢𝐬: “I'm a massive Jane's Addiction fan, and Perry Farrell, their lead singer, loves his electronic music. I always wanted to cover this electronically, and knew that it would be the last track on the album, so that, in a sense, the album would sonically follow a dynamic 'M' shape and leave you with this. […]
I played bass on this and Tom came up with the amazing guitar-like sounds on his laptop, and maybe using one of the array of synths in his collection.
When we finished, we thought about vocals and considered sending it to Perry Farrell to revoice it. I had a connection through the Hybrid boys, who've worked with him closely. But we kinda wanted it to be more 'ours' and felt a UK vocalist would be better. That left us with two choices, who we felt could do Perry's vocal justice. Aiden singer 𝙒𝙞𝙡 𝙁𝙧𝙖𝙣𝙘𝙞𝙨 (nowadays better known under his solo project 𝙒𝙞𝙡𝙡𝙞𝙖𝙢 𝘾𝙤𝙣𝙩𝙧𝙤𝙡) met Brian at the Kerrang! Awards show in 2006, where Placebo won an award for Classic Songwriter and Aiden for Best International Newcomer. Alternative Press was able to bring them both together for a chat on everything from work ethic to personal space the following year. Enjoy their conversation!

Brian: “Yeah, that was kind of crazy. It was around Halloween, and there were people in the audience dressed as Jesus and penises and things like that. It was fun. Jesus showed up with a nurse, actually. And this other guy was just walking around like a hard-on all night. You know, bumping into people and rubbing himself up against people. [laughs] It was a really good vibe, actually.”

Brian: “Not really, because we're the kind of band that seems to be in a continual state of writing. Stefan and I, we tinker with ideas by ourselves a lot, but we usually kind of take advantage bof the fact that we get bored of our songs quite quickly. We take advantage of the fact that we got a big PA system behind us at soundchecks, so we just kind of jam a lot – new musocal ideas come out of that quite organically. It normally starts happening six months into a tour. You know, when the songs on the new album aren't as fresh as they were for the first six months. And I think we haven't made the decision about what the Placebo sound should be and what a Placebo song is. If we write it and we like it and we have an emotional connection with it – regardless of what the instrumentation might be – it's still Placebo. It leaves us with a great deal of possibilities.”

Brian: “Don't be, man. Don't be. Before I was famous and I saw celebrities, I just kind of thought to myself, “Well, there's absolutely nothing I could say to them that would actually be interesting, so I'll just leave them with their own personal space”. Anything I could say they've probably heard 100 times before. Because of that, I can't really relate to that directly, but most of the time it's quite charming. If we go to Mexico we get treated like The Beatles. It's like us in 'A hard day's night' running down the street. [Wil laughs] In France, I kind of have to walk around with security – which I find extremely amusing – but I do everything I can to not appear like some kind of showoff about it because in all honesty, I would rather that I didn't have to.”

Brian: “I'm in New York right now, and this time is the first time that I've ever been recognized by people here. In the USA, it's still kind of a healthy level for me. I find that over here people are much easier to talk to and are much more polite. They have a tendence to respect your privacy and your personal space as far as fans are concerned. I think you have to understand that for these people who approach you, it's something really special, and you have to do your best not to get cynical about it. But they have to understand that you could also be having a bad day and that you may not want to apend your time with them. You might be living in your own head for that day, or you've been dumped, or somebody in your family is very ill, or you haven't taken your meds by accident and you might just not be ready for it.”

𝘞𝘪𝘭: “𝘐𝘵 𝘴𝘦𝘦𝘮𝘴 𝘭𝘪𝘬𝘦 𝘰𝘷𝘦𝘳𝘴𝘦𝘢𝘴 𝘪𝘵'𝘴 𝘢 𝘭𝘰𝘵 𝘮𝘰𝘳𝘦 𝘧𝘢𝘯𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘤𝘢𝘭. Brian: “Yeah, that's been my experience as well. I don't know why it's like that. I really don't.”

Brian: “Latin America is fantastic. Have you been there yet?”

𝘞𝘪𝘭: “𝘕𝘰, 𝘸𝘦 𝘩𝘢𝘷𝘦𝘯'𝘵.”
Brian: “Oh, you gotta go! It's the craziest audiences. The most generous, demonstrative audiences. We've played in Mexico in front of 17.000 people, and honestly, I felt like we were The Beatles playing the Shea Stadium. All I could fucking hear was the snare drum and my vocals. I couldn't hear anything else apart from the 17.000 crazy Mexicans screaming.”

Brian: “That's starting to matter a little bit less and less. People will have heard of you because the access to music is so much simpler and more democratic these days. People will have heard of you, and you'll be surprised where you'll have an audience. WE were always surprised when we'd go to Russia or somewhere Eastern Europe. We recently went to China and Korea. You think to yourself “Fucking nobody is going to have heard of us.” But there are people there who are just obsessed. I'd say go to places even if it's not financially viable – even if the tour costs you money – because there will be fans there and what you're doing by making an effort to go to these far-flung places, you're really capturing the hearts of those people who sometimes are quite starved for music and starved for bands. So you end up with kind of the most generous and crazy crowds because of that. Bands who have lasted the test of time are bands who have made that effort to tour. To become an extremely good live band – considering that 39 out of 40 songs are downloaded off the internet illegally – the ones who rely solely on record sales may not survive. Sometimes I wonder if that's a good thing or a bad thing, but one thing it's doing is sorting out the men from the boys, as far as live performances are concerned. [Pauses] Oh, something weird just happened in this apartment that made a very strange noise...”

Brian: “Well, neither really. I say this without any false modesty: I think it's really, really good for our egos. We really enjoy coming to the States, having to work and not resting on our laurels. I think for a band who have achieved a lot of success over ten years, it's good to have that. It keeps [us] hungry and it reminds [us] that there's always work to do and that you have to put an effort into it. We've got a really good work ethic anyway, but it can happen to anybody, to begin to get complacent. This stops it from happening and also keeps us on our toes and flexible, you know?”
