๐Ÿ’ฌ That was the first time I actually met them. I'd seen them playing before in a gig, I'd seen them already at festivals but MTV was where we first met, in 1998. It was a Placebo special on MTV. They played a gig and I did the interview with Brian, Stef and Steve at that time. ⬛ Big fan of Jane's Addiction, ๐„๐๐๐ฒ always wanted to cover this song with electronic sounds. Once the recording was done, the question was who would provide the vocals for the song. And this is the story of how ๐๐ซ๐ข๐š๐ง was selected:

๐Ÿ’ฌ We first felt that Brian would overshadow us, so prepared to contact Robert, but we then switched sides, I think, because were both such huge Placebo fans and really relished the chance to work with Brian. But it was only a snowballs chance in hell, Brian was a busy man. I texted him and he replied that he knew and loved that song, but couldn’t make any promises. I sent the track, and within 24 hours had a hilarious message back saying: “I love it. I’m doing it. I won’t let you use anybody else on this, I’m free on ONE DAY this year, and I’m coming to your studio”.

He did. With a cold. But it was now or never. Brian had this incredible tea called ‘Throat Coat’, or something, an American, medicinal brew containing ‘slippery elm bark’. I tasted some and it was like magic! It literally coats the back of your throat in this yummy, slippery stuff, so you don’t get that horrid scratchy feeling from a sore throat. Brian said it’s the ‘singers’ best kept secret’. That combined with the brandy he sent me off to buy -purely for medicinal purposes – in miniature bottles did the trick and Brian laid down, I think, one of his best ever vocals. We really stretched him and he rocked it like the true pro he is.

I don’t think Brian has ever recorded a vocal in such scummy conditions, in front of a multi-stained, upturned sofa, masquerading as an impromptu vocal booth in the Coopers control room. Now I look forward to the day he sings it live with us.

⬛ On the Losers' Bandcamp, you can read this anecdote, which is actually quite hilarious:

๐Ÿ’ฌ The album features very special guest Brian Molko from Placebo singing on Losers cover of Jane Addiction’s Summertime Rolls’, the instrumental of which Eddy and Tom sent to Brian to consider putting the vocals onto. Within 24 hours of hearing the track Brian called the Losers to threaten them…..” If you let anyone else sing on this track I’ll have them killed !” Thankfully Robert Harvey of The Music, lives on.

I always wanted to cover this electronically, and knew that it would be the last track on the album, so that, in a sense, the album would sonically follow a dynamic 'M' shape and leave you with this. […]
I played bass on this and Tom came up with the amazing guitar-like sounds on his laptop, and maybe using one of the array of synths in his collection.
When we finished, we thought about vocals and considered sending it to Perry Farrell to revoice it. I had a connection through the Hybrid boys, who've worked with him closely. But we kinda wanted it to be more 'ours' and felt a UK vocalist would be better. That left us with two choices, who we felt could do Perry's vocal justice. Brian Molko of Placebo, who I knew, and Robert Harvey of The Music, who my friend Danny McNamara knew.
We first felt that Brian would overshadow us, so prepared to contact Robert, but we then switched sides, I think, because were both such huge Placebo fans and really relished the chance to work with Brian. But it was only a snowballs chance in hell, Brian was a busy man. I texted him and he replied that he knew and loved that song but couldn't make any promises. I sent the track, and within 24 hours had a hilarious message back saying: "I love it. I'm doing it. I won't let you use anybody else on this, I'm free on ONE DAY this year, and I'm coming to your studio".
He did. With a cold. But it was now or never. Brian had this incredible tea called 'Throat Coat', or something, an American, medicinal brew containing 'slippery elm bark'. I tasted some and it was like magic! It literally coats the back of your throat in this yummy, slippery stuff, so you don't get that horrid scratchy feeling from a sore throat. Brian said it's the 'singers' best kept secret'. That combined with the brandy he sent me off to buy - purely for medicinal purposes - in miniature bottles did the trick and Brian laid down, I think, one of his best ever vocals. We really stretched him, and he rocked it like the true pro he is.
I don't think Brian has ever recorded a vocal in such scummy conditions, in front of a multi-stained, upturned sofa, masquerading as an impromptu vocal booth in the Coopers control room. Now I look forward to the day he sings it live with us.”

As serious can be...
She sings a song and
I listen to what it says:
If you want a friend

There was so much space
I cut me a piece
With some fine wine
It brought peace to my mind
In the summertime...
And it rolled
Summer... oh...
Oh... the summertime rolls Me and my girlfriend
We don't wear no clothes you know

I love her
I mean it's so so serious

On December 15th, 2016, Placebo performed one of their 20-years-anniversary concerts at ๐‘พ๐’†๐’Ž๐’ƒ๐’๐’†๐’š ๐‘จ๐’“๐’†๐’๐’‚ in London. That night, there was an afterparty organized after the show where Losers’ frontman, producer, radio presenter – and Brian’s friend! - Eddy Temple Morris was invited to play a DJ set.

On the next day, Eddy posted the picture you can see below on his ๐‘ฐ๐’๐’”๐’•๐’‚๐’ˆ๐’“๐’‚๐’Ž ๐’‚๐’„๐’„๐’๐’–๐’๐’• with the following words:
๐Ÿ“ข “Was such a huge pleasure to see this old friend again and tell him he was responsible for my crying at a gig for the fourth time in my life. I felt very honoured to have been asked to play the after show by him - for old times sake."
To tell you more about the evening at Wembley, I’d like to share some excerpts of Eddy’s ๐ˆ๐๐“๐„๐‘๐•๐ˆ๐„๐– he once did for ๐‘ท๐’๐’‚๐’„๐’†๐’ƒ๐’ ๐‘บ๐’•๐’๐’“๐’š ๐‘ท๐’“๐’๐’‹๐’†๐’„๐’•. But I think they kind of liked my vibe and they asked MTV: 'Can Eddy do the interview?' So, I was very touched. And that was the first time we met. They played a gig, and I did the interview with Brian, Stef and Steve at that time. And then Brian suggested that we went to a pub afterwards and had a few drinks, a chat, exchanged numbers and stay touched and over the years we became friends.

And the next time we hang out was when I asked him to sing on my first album, the Losers first album. And he sang. I always wanted to do a cover of Summertime Rolls by Jane's Addiction. I thought there are only two people who can sing this song, aside from Perry Farrell. It could be Rob Harvey from The Music or Brian. I just asked Brian would he want to do it, he said: 'Yes, I love that song!" The rest is history.
[...]
And then I saw them at Wembley. And this amazing thing happened. The moment when they stopped playing and they just looked at the crowd. And the crowd started clapping. You know the one? And they clap, clap, clap, and clap. You know, at any normal gig a band say 'Thank you' and they come over playing after thirty seconds of clapping. They just let it happen. They just kept it going for minutes, and minutes, and minutes, didn't they? They just kept it going. If you leave a crowd normally to clap, they'll slowly stop clapping. But this is Placebo crowd just clapped like louder, louder and cheered screamed, louder and louder. And, you know, it was so much love there that I started crying. I had tears came up of my eyes because, you know, it was an emotion, it's really hard, you have to be some kind of a sociopath – not really, to react to that. Like involuntarily tears stared coming down my face, it was just such a moving moment. And it was only the fourth time in my life when I had tears at a gig. That was really special moment to me.

I think my favourite track of Placebo is Pure Morning… I met Phil Vinall yesterday who was the producer of that track. And I said to him honestly if I have to take one Placebo song away and it was only one Placebo song that I'd listen to the rest of my life it would be Pure Morning. And he did that track. If you had to take one Placebo album with me to a desert island, I think it would be Sleeping with Ghosts bonus disk with only covers on it because there I got them doing T. Rex, I got them doing Kate Bush, I got them doing Pixies. There’s something really special about these covers. I love Placebo songs, but I really loved when they take a cover and they make it their own somebody else's song. And it's always cool songs because Brian has such a great taste…

I've got to see him a little after during my set and he came and I gave him a hug and a kiss, we had a chat. More profoundly he called me few weeks after that, just said: 'Listen, I wanted to say…' It was very sweet call, very, very honest. He called and said: 'I just wanted to say that I love you, I miss you and we asked you to come and play, not anyone else. We ask you for a reason because you've always been there for us and we've always been there for you. We just want to tell you that we love you that's why we wanted you to do this. It means a lot to us that you were there. You are kind of one of us'. I was very touched by that. And it was a huge honour to do; I mean that playing the aftershow. A gig of that size, a gig of this quality of a band what I really, really love. And I really do love Brian, he's a great guy – incredibly talented, very interesting character. So, I was really, really happy to do that.

๐‘จ๐’๐’‚๐’”๐’•๐’‚๐’”๐’Š๐’š๐’‚ ๐‘ณ๐’๐’ˆ๐’Š๐’๐’๐’—๐’‚: It was the first time you played after Placebo gig as I understand. Or had you played before?

But it had nothing to do with them; I just had to be there. And sometimes I play before or after bands at these festivals. But this was like the first time when they did the anniversary show. Placebo fans and the band I feel like one big family. Brian coming and giving me a hug at the aftershow stuff. It definitely felt… and Stef giving me a hug and saying: 'Hello', and their manager… It all feels like a family. It all feels very warm and very valued, very close. I was very, very touched to be asked to do that.

๐‘จ๐’๐’‚๐’”๐’•๐’‚๐’”๐’Š๐’š๐’‚ ๐‘ณ๐’๐’ˆ๐’Š๐’๐’๐’—๐’‚: Yes, it's a real sweet moment and I can understand you. You have been friends for a long time and as for me, it's interesting. Did Placebo influence you? [...]
๐Ÿ“ข ๐‘ฌ๐’…๐’…๐’š ๐‘ป๐’†๐’Ž๐’‘๐’๐’†-๐‘ด๐’๐’“๐’“๐’Š๐’”: Well, it's an interesting question. Have Placebo influenced me? I would say I use the word that is stronger for me –'inspiration'. They inspired me. And Brian has inspired me. And I feel there were points in my life where I needed to have Placebo musically just to help me get through. You know, to inspire me. I never listened to Placebo song and thought 'I want to write a song like this'. But I might listen to Placebo song and think 'it's so eloquent, the way that melody works with those lyrics.’ I definitely find Brian's lyrics very inspiring. I think he is a fantastic lyrics writer. I mean I love Placebo's music; they're one of my favourite bands of all time but I think not enough is said about what a great lyricist he is. And I often find myself just walking down the road like singing Placebo song all day long or just singing, maybe, just one line of Placebo song. It could be ‘Twenty years ago’, it could be a line from 'Nancy Boy' or just a line from couple years ago, it could be 'My computer thinks I’m gay I threw that piece of junk away On the Champs-Elysรฉes'. I like singing a line to myself again and again. So, I'd say that rather than influence because like… I'm older than all of these guys. So, my influence has come from the very similar place, you know, from T. Rex or from Nine Inch Nails or whatever. So, I would say I'm inspired rather than influenced by Placebo but massively inspired and I do have a really strong emotional response to their music.

Luckily for Eddy and Tom – and for us, of course! - complications didn’t stop Brian, so we’ve got this great cover done. However, I’m pretty sure they all had a lot of fun in the studio while recording.

By the way, sometime earlier, in 2009, there was another kind of collaboration between Losers and Placebo: ๐‘ณ๐’๐’”๐’†๐’“๐’”’ ๐’“๐’†๐’Ž๐’Š๐’™ (๐‘ด๐’‚๐’™๐’Š๐’Ž๐’‚๐’ ๐‘ป๐’†๐’„๐’‰๐’Ž๐’Š๐’™) of ๐…๐จ๐ซ ๐–๐ก๐š๐ญ ๐ˆ๐ญ'๐ฌ ๐–๐จ๐ซ๐ญ๐ก was released on the single Ashtray Heart.

In the end, it would be unfair to not listen to the original song by Jane's Addiction.

Fell into
A sea of grass
And disappeared among
The shady blades...
Children all
Ran over me
Screaming tag!
You are the one!

He trips her as
Her sandals fail
She says stop!
I'm a girl...
Whose fingernails are made
Of mother's pearl...
Yellow buttercup
Helicopters
Orange buttercat
Chasing after
The crazy bee
Mad about somebody...

Me and my girlfriend
Don't wear no shoes
Her nose is painted pepper
Sunlight...
She loves me
I mean it's serious
As serious can be...

She sings a song and
I listen to what it says:
If you want a friend
Feed any animal...
There was so much space
I cut me a piece
With some fine wine
It brought peace to my mind
In the summertime...
And it rolled

Summer... oh...
Oh... the summertime rolls Me and my girlfriend

We don't wear no clothes you know
Her nose is painted in pepper sunlight
I love her
I mean it's so so serious
As serious can be

In fact it is not only a collaboration but also a cover version because the song was originally written and recorded by Jane's Addiction for their album ”Nothing's shocking” in 1988.

The rework with Brian on vocals first appeared on Losers album “Beautiful loser” on September 12th 2010. Exactly nine years ago today, on June 12th 2011, it was also released as a single which included the album version, a radio edit and four remixes.
“Summertime rolls” is not the only song that Brian and Losers worked on together. In 2009 a remix of Placebo's “For what it's worth” done by Losers was released on the single “Ashtray heart”.
And after Placebo's "20 years" anniversary concert at Wembley Arena in London on December 15th 2016 Losers frontman Eddie Temple-Morris played a DJ set at the aftershow party. He said that it was a big honor for him. "I love Brian very much, he is a great guy - incredibly talented, very interesting person. So I was very, very happy to play", Eddie explained (Placebo Story Project, 2016).
