🔸Battle For The Sun, Placebo's sixth studio album, was released on June 8, 2009.
🔸It reached number 8 in the UK Albums Chart.
🔸The album is available as a download, limited edition CD and DVD, LP and a limited edition box set.
🔸All tracks were recorded at Metalworks Studios in Toronto, Canada, and produced by 𝐃𝐚𝐯𝐢𝐝 𝐁𝐨𝐭𝐭𝐫𝐢𝐥𝐥, except for “Kings of medicine”. This song was originally made for a “Don't drink and drive” campaign and produced by Dimitri Tikovoi, who worked with the band on their previous album “Meds”.
🔸Four singles were released from the record: "For what it's worth”, “The never-ending Why”, “Ashtray Heart” and “Bright Lights”.
🔸It is the first album recorded with drummer 𝐒𝐭𝐞𝐯𝐞 𝐅𝐨𝐫𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐭, who joined the band in 2008.
🔸On Battle for the Sun, the band utilize new instruments, such as trumpets and saxophones.
🔸Brian Molko even experimented with the Springtime (experimental electric guitar made by Yuri Landman)

Previous album "Meds" took the band Placebo into the deepest and darkest universes. And so it was time to realize that life goes on and it doesn't have to be just about suffering. From the inner strength of survival came an album no longer affected by the devastation of drugs and alcohol.

🔸"This album has one of my favorite songs to play live, which is "Speak in Tongues." This is the only record that we recorded outside of the UK. There had been a recent personnel change in the band, and we'd gone from making an album that had been very claustrophobic, and we now wanted to make a record that was quite cinemascope and anthemic. It ended up being very much an album about drums and guitars. I guess it's very much the sound of a band trying to find a new identity. .../***/

Compared to the predecessor, definitely. That had been precipitated by a line-up change, a lifestyle change, and going from feeling at one point that my band was doomed to feeling like we had a future and I could start from scratch again. It's definitely our most American sounding record, I think.

We just wanted to work with David Bottril (Tool, Muse). He suggested we try it there. And we wanted to try and record a record outside of the UK. David knew his way around an excellent studio, and he certainly did in terms of sonics. We were looking for something that was tougher and heavier than its predecessor, so Tool's producer seemed like a good choice.

It was. David's an awesome guy. I loved spending time with him. He was very accessible as a person and very honest and very communicative. I enjoyed having a relationship with a producer who was like that. I took a shine to him very easily. Our decision to use brass was inspired by our love of soul, reggae and Beatles’ records. We’ve used strings before; check out ‘Pierrot the Clown’ from [the album] ‘Meds’.

Each new album starts as a reaction to its predecessor, which is the biggest influence of all because it determines exactly what we do not want to do. With that in mind, and with a little distance for perspective’s sake, Stef and Idecided that ‘Meds’ was a very claustrophobic and monochrome album that offered hardly any hope to the listener. Thus it seemed logical to make a new album bursting with colour and optimism. Having said that, whether we did so or not remains up for debate.

It's amazing that a good friend of the band, director 𝐂𝐡𝐚𝐫𝐥𝐢𝐞 𝐓𝐚𝐫𝐠𝐞𝐭𝐭-𝐀𝐝𝐚𝐦𝐬, was present during the recording of the album. Thanks to him, a document was created that is a beautiful and sensitive confession about the whole process. This bonus DVD was a surprise for fans as part of the BFTS Deluxe edition.
