Today English-French singer, songwriter and actor Jane Birkin celebrates her 75th birthday. She is a woman that Brian adores, and in 2004 they recorded the song “Smile” together which was released on the album “Rendez-vous”.

On December 14th 1946 Jane Mallory Birkin was born in London, UK. She began her career as an actress at the age of 20.
In 1969 she met Serge Gainsbourg while co-starring with him in the film “Slogan”, and this encounter marked the beginning of a working and personal relationship that lasted for decades. In the same year Jane and Serge released the scandalous song “Je t'aime moi non plus”, which Brian covered with Asia Argento in 2002. She also acted in the same-titled controversial 1976 film under Gainsbourg's direction.

Jane also appeared on his 1971 concept album “Histoire de Melody Nelson”, she portrayed the Lolia-like teenage protagonist in the song and on the cover. With “Ballade de Melody Nelson” Brian also covered a song from that record.
After separating from Gainsbourg in 1980 Jane continued to work as both an actress and a singer, appearing in various independent films and recording numerous solo albums.
Birkin has resided mainly in France since the 1970s. She is the mother of photographer Kate Barry (d. 2013), actress and singer Charlotte Gainsbourg, and musician Lou Doillon. In her career she has released 14 studio and six live albums and starred in more than 70 film productions. Her humanitarian interests have also led her to work with Amnesty International on immigrant welfare and the AIDS problem.

He played in a school band with a chubby Swede called Robert Schultzberg and then years later Stefan and I bumped into each other on a tube station in London and he was studying music at the time. I was doing a little acoustic gig one night and he came down and we talked and discovered that we had much more in common than we had ever imagined. We started playing around with a four-track f*cked up old keyboards making music that was atonal and instrumental and stuff. We wanted to form a punk band, so we when Robert
came over in October `94 we wrote some stuff together as a band that was the start of Placebo basically."

🎤"We came to be involved in the "Velvet Goldmine" soundtrack through myself getting a role in the film. I was cast as a singer that was in a fictitious band that played "20th Century Boy" in the film, so we suggested that we record a cover for the soundtrack. Then Steve and Stef got roles in the film as well, and it just kind of snowballed from that first phone call. I was a very, very big Todd Haynes fan anyway so when I showed up for the audition I just went, "I'll do anything just let me be in your movie," and it kind of worked out. The first time we performed "20th Century Boy," it was the first day of filming. It was the first [scene shot], and the audience was Ewan McGregor and Michael Stipe. We were kind of crapping ourselves, shall we say, but we did it well. I think it's one of the high points in the movie. [...] But there's a lot of waiting around in shooting a movie, and it was kind of like a very long video shoot. We made some really good friends and we had a great time. Anytime you can go to the movies and see yourself, it's kind of a strange feeling.

🎤"[...] That's crazy: when I'm standing in front of 50,000 people at Rock am Ring, for example, I might feel a little nervous, but I'm in control. If I stand in front of 200 people in my old university and try to give a speech, I am a nervous wreck. The award was a fantastic honor for me. In retrospect, I see this as a really positive experience. But before and during the award ceremony, I felt absolutely uncomfortable with this cape and hat. I had been up since 4 a.m., couldn't sleep, and my nerves were really bad. However, I have heard that this is not unusual. Graham and Alex von Blur are said to have felt the same way when they received their honorary membership.

I have made it since all my adult's life, I don't know what to do or other one, it became precious for me, it became something that I have to work on so that it still lasts at least 20 years. 🎤"I feel extremely privileged because it's an amazing position to be in," he marvels. "I'd say that I feel extremely fortunate and very, very grateful. Because this is all I know how to do! I've never had a job, this is all I've done my entire adult life. Sometimes I wonder what would happen if it all collapsed tomorrow - what the f*ck would I do? I can't drive so I can't drive a cab, I refuse to tend bar, my computer skills are shit - I'm unemployable. This is all I got, so I put all of me into it.

"It wasn't our modus operandi at the beginning but we realised very quickly that our music made people happy, even though it can be very dark at times. And a whole community of outcasts has formed around the band, which we never expected to happen - we never set out to do that. We set out to express ourselves artistically and to try and make a living - just to pay the rent and be able to buy food was all we wanted - we didn't even set out to achieve global success, we just didn't want to get a job in an office because that was terrifying!
"But we realised really soon that we made a lot of people happy just through a lot of the tortured feelings that are in the songs, and there's a global community now of misshapes, of square pegs in round holes, of outcasts, of people who feel like they don't really belong to the herd. Which is exactly what myself and Stefan felt like when we were growing up, so there's the connection."
