It's time for an ♦️𝗜𝗡𝗧𝗘𝗥𝗩𝗜𝗘𝗪♦️ again. This one was given to Melody Maker by our three Placebo boys in 1999 when they were touring Australia with Silverchair. Everyone of them had to answer five questions. I found it interesting that Brian was mainly asked stuff about touring and his festival experiences while Stefan and Steve Hewitt had to answer some quite personal questions. But Brian made up for this by using the f-word in almost every statement. ;-) Enjoy reading!

🟣𝑩𝑹𝑰𝑨𝑵🟣
𝗪𝗛𝗔𝗧 𝗛𝗔𝗩𝗘 𝗬𝗢𝗨 𝗕𝗘𝗘𝗡 𝗨𝗣 𝗧𝗢 𝗥𝗘𝗖𝗘𝗡𝗧𝗟𝗬?
📢 "The first part of the Australian tour has been riddled with injuries and serious jet lag. Stefan fell off-stage in South Africa and broke his arm, so he's got a cast with our autographs on, and Garbage's as well. That same evening I slept in the same position for 10 hours, and woke up with a compressed vertebra in my neck. Since then I haven't been able to feel half of my head. It's the strangest sensation, especially when I shower."


𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗣𝗥𝗢𝗠𝗢𝗧𝗘𝗥 𝗟𝗔𝗦𝗧 𝗡𝗜𝗚𝗛𝗧 𝗥𝗘𝗠𝗔𝗥𝗞𝗘𝗗 𝗧𝗛𝗔𝗧 𝗛𝗘 𝗗𝗜𝗗𝗡'𝗧 𝗥𝗘𝗔𝗟𝗜𝗦𝗘 𝗬𝗢𝗨 𝗪𝗘𝗥𝗘 𝗦𝗢 𝗣𝗢𝗣𝗨𝗟𝗔𝗥.
📢 "Neither did we. The first few gigs were a little slow - we were feeling very f***ed-u, cos of fatigue and jet lag. Melbourne and Adelaide have been incredible. Silverchair attracted quite a young audience, so there's been a lot of pent-up teenage sexual energy coming out. We're doing our best, considering I get twitches in my head and Stefan can't play the songs at all the same because of his cast. Steve's OK, he's just mad. All drummers are mad."


𝗪𝗛𝗘𝗡 𝗜 𝗟𝗔𝗦𝗧 𝗠𝗘𝗧 𝗬𝗢𝗨, 𝗬𝗢𝗨 𝗦𝗔𝗜𝗗 𝗬𝗢𝗨 𝗪𝗘𝗥𝗘 𝗚𝗢𝗜𝗡𝗚 𝗧𝗢 𝗥𝗘𝗟𝗢𝗖𝗔𝗧𝗘 𝗧𝗢 𝗡𝗘𝗪 𝗬𝗢𝗥𝗞.
📢 "Yeah, I always think about it. I've started having a serious relationship with someone in Paris. I've been spending a lot of time on Eurostar. To change continents right now would be self-destructive again. I should allow myself to be happy.“

📢 "We did a festival in Belgium with R.E.M. recently, and it was the first end of the world this year - the Nostradamus one, I think. So I'm telling Michael Stipe this and he's like, 'F***ing hell, man, that's great, it will give me a new way of introducing the song tonight.' And my heart was just glowing, because just before the final song, 'It's the End of the World as We Know It', he said, 'I was just talking to Brian from Placebo and he informed me it was due to be the end of the world, are you listening to me, Brian? Did we f***ing make it or what?"


𝗔𝗥𝗘 𝗬𝗢𝗨 𝗚𝗢𝗢𝗗 𝗠𝗔𝗧𝗘𝗦 𝗪𝗜𝗧𝗛 𝗥.𝗘.𝗠. 𝗡𝗢𝗪?
📢 "We've seen them about quite a bit on tour, them and the Fun Lovin' Criminals, who we got totally wasted with in Greece. I had a barney with Damon Albarn in Italy. We were standing at the side of the stage watching Marilyn Manson, and he was slagging him off. I told him I didn't think he was actually that bad. SO he put his arm around me, and said very patronisingly, 'You'll learn'... and so we started this 15-minute 'F*** you!' 'F*** you!' session between us which went all the way back from the stage to the dressing-room area."

𝗛𝗢𝗪 𝗗𝗜𝗗 𝗬𝗢𝗨 𝗕𝗥𝗘𝗔𝗞 𝗬𝗢𝗨𝗥 𝗔𝗥𝗠?
📢 "It happened in South Africa. Nothing as glamorous or rock'n'roll as a punch-up or sexual games. I was watching Garbage backstage and I came off the stage and the second-to-last step gave way. We were lucky we didn't have to cancel any shows. I feel a little inadequate, like a mother's boy. It's not good for my psyche. It's the hand I fondle my tool with."


𝗪𝗛𝗔𝗧'𝗦 𝗜𝗧 𝗟𝗜𝗞𝗘 𝗕𝗘𝗜𝗡𝗚 𝗔 𝗦𝗘𝗫 𝗦𝗬𝗠𝗕𝗢𝗟?
📢 "It helps a lot. If you don't feel like prancing round the stage, you can just stand there and let what you look like do the work. This isn't going to last forever, we might as well take advantage of it while we're young. But you don't think about it too much. Initially, our egos blew up, but now they're back to what they were before."

📢 "Freedom. The right to believe in yourself, especially sexually. We give gay people confidence to come out - we have a lot of people coming out at us. It's so political, self motivation - if you really want to be a nutter, be a nutter, as long as you don't hurt anyone else. It's all good clean dirty fun. It's good, getting young boys and girls seeing us as personalities. On the first album, it's all about the music, but after that your career takes off and it's more about the personalities. You have to accept that."

The first album was party, the second album was coming down from the party, the third one is 'I'm going out again, but don't tell anybody'. It's more emotional, more playful, a lot of melodies coming up. It feels very Swedish. A lot of nice, brittle melodies. It's got a European feel. Teacher/pupil relationships, they're sweet. I had a few crushes at school - mostly English teachers. Female English teachers, they're f***ing sexy."

🔶 The day after David Bowie's interview with Placebo, the 𝗰𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗵𝗼𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗯𝘆 𝗗𝗮𝘃𝗶𝗱 𝗕𝗼𝘄𝗶𝗲, on March 29th 1999, Stefan was interviewed by 𝗛𝗶𝗽 𝗢𝗻𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗲. It is obvious that the interviewer felt very uncomfortable because coming after David Bowie put a lot of pressure on him. It's understandable after all ? 😄

🔶 It is clear that the subject 'Bowie' was discussed, as well as touring, America, media, some songs, all tinged with the humour that Stefan knows so well. 💖 💝

💬 Well, we played a show last night, in Roseland last night, and Bowie came up and joined us on stage. We did a couple tunes together and it was brilliant. It was a really good show anyway and then he came up and started jamming out with us. It was superb. Really good fun.

💬 Exactly. Every time we see him he is sort of coming out with like one-liners and stuff and stuff to do with people that are dead and gone. It’s amazing. It’s really hard to comprehend sometimes the amount of stuff he has done. He is throwing dates at you like from the late ’60’s and like I can’t even remember last week ! (𝘸𝘦 𝘣𝘰𝘵𝘩 𝘭𝘢𝘶𝘨𝘩)

💬 It was 1996, I wasn’t in the band at the time, but Morrissey was touring with David Bowie, and then Morrissey went on a walkabout and just disappeared. Then Bowie discovered a Placebo demo even before the first album, Virgin just signed them, and he said, ‘Come on tour with us.’ And they went on tour and it has been a friendship since then really.

💬 Definitely. That is the way Brian writes his lyrics sometimes. Like the song “You Don’t Care About Us”. That is taken from the point of view of somebody talking to Brian. As opposed to him talking to somebody else, actually somebody is asking him, ‘This relationship is going wrong. You don’t care about us, man.’ (𝘭𝘢𝘶𝘨𝘩𝘴 ) But other people translate it like the kids are going to the adults, ‘You don’t care about us!’ It’s weird. They are all coming from all different angles.
“My Sweet Prince” was a female friend of Brian’s who just they were just kind of busting up and that was the last thing she wrote on his mirror in his bathroom before they split up. It is all real, but it can be from any direction really.

It’s like, ‘Use your loaf.’ It’s simple, isn’t it ? Then they get pissed because they don’t sell it out and they think that all Americans are wankers. It’s like, ‘You’ve got it well mixed up there. You better go back, think about it, and then come back again.’ That is the biggest thing with bands like Oasis and The Verve; they just think the world owes them a fucking living. I don’t think they are particularly great bands anyway.

Brian talks about David Bowie, the weirdest gifts he has received from fans, the last time he cried, modeling for Calvin Klein, drinking with Marilyn Manson and leaving dirty messages on Madonna's answering machine. Placebo does not miss Greece from theirs tours. The guys first visited Greece in 1999 and will play two concerts again this year.

Placebo's mastermind talks in "Vima" about the course and the changes of the adored, in our country, british band.
"Placebo's case is quite impressive. An overall punctual/dutiful band that is good but of not that big of a range in other countries, meets, in Greece, a success of a ..super band.
Since their first appearance in Rockwave Festival in 1999, their popularity has been constantly increasing.
Adoration and hysteria/frenzy/delirium for the tiny frontman, guitarist and singer of the band Brian Molko, who has managed to become a subject of discussions within the british music press since the beginning of his career in the midst of 90's, with both the lyrics of his songs (Nancy Boy), as well as the androgynous style which he launched.
Collaborations with their mentor David Bowie and the follow-up is all the more interesting with even greater hits (Taste In Men, Slave To The Wage, Special K).
Their new appearance in Athens and Thessaloniki is performed in the sphere of their worldwide tour for their new album Battle For The Sun.
Brian Molko with his familiar/typical style/vein and humour talked in "Sunday Vima" before his new visit to our country.

We've thought, at some points, to leave it all behind. But we have no other choice. What the hell am I supposed to do in my life?
I open my mouth and describe my feelings in all honesty and this, apparently, is getting clear by the audience ..and that's magical. It's a matter of honesty to manage to speak in the heart of so many people.
Besides, I don't have the slightest intention, as several hip-hop artists do, to have a career in the cinema at the same time. Or to be a judge in one of those fucking stupid t.v. shows. I'm only doing this cause I have nothing else to do, and I'm also doing it so that I won't go completely mad."

"It was a political move of us during the 90's. A sign to everyone who felt different and was afraid to admit it. We would tell them that there's no reason for them to hide. And it wasn't just about sexuality.
You know, there are a lot more people of a 'wrong' body compared to the people that meet the Hollywood standards. Not everyone is like Angelina Jolie, and not everyone can be like her.
We would talk about anyone that was an outcast/marginal, maybe because we felt we were like this ourselves as well.
After all, music has never met any norms/forms. I think that, with this move of us in 1990, we encouraged bands such as Gossip with Beth Ditto to be able to find their own word and stand out there."

Well let's see which the true roots of rock n' roll are. Look at Little Richard or Elvis Presley. Talking about 2 heterosexual people whose figure created a sensation with/due to its difference. Richard, a black guy that would put on tons of make-up and talk about shaggings in the 50's.
This is the background of rock music, of these artists and of David Bowie and Iggy Pop who passed the baton later on."

🔹 The 1999 Eurockéennes session was Placebo's second appearance at this highly regarded festival in France. Their first appearance was in 1997. In 1999, the band was not yet a headliner. This was achieved in 2004 with the worldwide success of 𝑆𝑙𝑒𝑝𝑝𝑖𝑛𝑔 𝑊𝑖𝑡ℎ 𝐺ℎ𝑜𝑠𝑡𝑠.

𝑩𝒓𝒊𝒂𝒏 : Festivals, they're like a big picnic. But they're also like walking a tightrope in the way that anything that can go wrong, will go wrong. But you also spend a lot of time in a field beforehand. there's a certain amount of less pressure in one way but then there's more pressure as well because there's more people and you don't have a soundcheck, etc. So it's not that you don't take it as seriously, that if something goes wrong, that it's not the end of the world, that you're on a bill with x amount of people and that things will probably go wrong for them too. So you just smile about it. It's a bit more fun.

From the intro with Scared on Girls, the tone is set: no frills, just brilliant songs executed with no hesitation. The faster tempo is the only thing that differentiates these live versions from their studio counterparts, but it makes a big difference. The first six tracks follow one another without a break, the time to hit a few larsens as an introduction, Allergic, or to listen to the constant "Briaaann-neuh !" of the swooning girls after each track. The climax of this first third of the concert is reached with the classic double effect 'Kill Kool' from Placebo (the album), 36 degrees / Bionic, killer songs that have not aged at all. After a groovy break with a well-chosen B-side, Drowing by Numbers, and the poignant Without You I'm Nothing, the concert starts again, Placebo picking from the most efficient songs of their repertoire Every You Every Me, Slackerbitch. Not yet inflicting his pseudo-demagogic speeches on his audience, Brian Molko is relatively sober, with a magnificent: "I gave myself a microphone shot and now I'm bleeding for you." After a less obvious track, Lady of the Flowers, as a breather, Placebo ends in the most beautiful way with a very well served Nancy Boy by Stefan Olsdal's bass and my favourite track, Pure Morning, a nice summary of each band member's know-how. Finally, it ends with an apocalyptic live version of Evil Dildo, the hidden instrumental track from Without You I'm Nothing. These nine deafening minutes prove that Placebo's desire to play was furious in their early days. And so much the better if the audience in Belfort could finish their concert on this concentrated rock, it will have been the final touch to an almost ideal setlist.

Five years after their debut, Placebo is still not jaded, and you can feel the rage in the chorus of "You Don't Care About Us" as well as the true sincerity in the interpretation of "Teenage Angst". A band that was able to crystallize teenage feelings so well was bound to disappear quickly or to lose its passionate urgency over time.

𝐄𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐲 𝐘𝐨𝐮 𝐄𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐲 𝐌𝐞, the third single from Placebo’s second studio album Without You I'm Nothing, was released on January 25th, 1999.

The song was written by 𝑩𝒓𝒊𝒂𝒏 and his friend 𝑷𝒂𝒖𝒍 𝑪𝒂𝒎𝒑𝒊𝒐𝒏, lead singer of 𝐀𝐂 𝐀𝐜𝐨𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐬. As Brian later said, Paul “helped me out on the lyrics for Every You Every Me on the second album when I had a writer’s block.” (𝑆𝑒𝑠𝑠𝑖𝑜𝑛 𝑎𝑡 𝐴𝑂𝐿 2004)

When asked who the song was about, 𝑩𝒓𝒊𝒂𝒏 replied in his typical ironic style
“Who's it about? I'm not really too sure just yet. I think it's about a lot of people. Probably anybody... everybody who's had the displeasure of sleeping with me. (laughs) I want to stress that I said displeasure there.” (laughs)

The single managed to chart at number 11 on the UK Singles Chart, number 46 in Australia, and number 99 in Germany.

It was voted from a poll of 500,000 votes to be ranked number 83 on the list of the Hottest 100 of All Time in July 2009, conducted by Australian radio station Triple J.

Croatian metal band 𝑨𝒔𝒉𝒆𝒔 𝒀𝒐𝒖 𝑳𝒆𝒂𝒗𝒆 covered Every You Every Me on their 2009 album Songs of the Lost. and in 2017, 𝑳𝒊𝒔𝒂 𝑴𝒊𝒕𝒄𝒉𝒆𝒍𝒍 covered the song on her EP When They Play That Song.

The song was featured on the soundtrack of the famous American movie 𝐂𝐫𝐮𝐞𝐥 𝐈𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬 which became another breakthrough moment for Placebo. A lot of people, and in the US particularly, got to know the band thanks to the film and stayed fans ever since.

This song was the theme tune to the film ‘Cruel Intentions’, which was ‘Les Liaisons Dangereuses’ transported to Upper West Side of New York. It’s a teen film. There’s another version where they intercut it with parts from the film. Even though I’m wearing a rather fetching John Richmond dress, which cost a lot of money, I still look silly. It’s one of my many fashion crimes I was guilty of early in our career.
This video’s also a bit of a cop-out, because we made another video, which didn’t involve performance. It was about twins and never got released. It was banned by management. So we had to pull one together from footage that we’d filmed at Brixton Academy.”

🔸As many of you know, 𝑷𝒍𝒂𝒄𝒆𝒃𝒐 shared live reviews in the past. Today, I'd like to share a review written by a fan, whose username was '𝘚𝘤𝘰𝘵𝘭𝘢𝘯𝘥', after their show in 𝑀𝑎𝑑𝑟𝑖𝑑 𝑎𝑡 𝐺𝑢𝑖𝑡𝑒𝑟𝑟𝑒𝑧 𝑓𝑒𝑠𝑡𝑖𝑣𝑎𝑙 𝑜𝑛 19𝑡ℎ 𝐽𝑢𝑛𝑒 1999, and which was kindly shared on the 𝑆𝑖𝑙𝑣𝑒𝑟 𝑅𝑜𝑐𝑘𝑒𝑡 𝑚𝑎𝑔𝑎𝑧𝑖𝑛𝑒.

📖We touched down in Madrid and took a cab to our hotel where the temperature 'reads out' were showing, believe it or not, an oven like 36 degrees (!) at 11:30 am. It could only get hotter and as Placebo took to the stage in the sports stadium, the temperature was raised even higher by what was to be a blistering performance.


Firstly, to get the sombrero's tossed in the air was 𝑆𝑟𝑎𝑑𝑟𝑒𝑑 𝑂𝑓 𝐺𝑖𝑟𝑙𝑠, 𝐵𝑟𝑖𝑐𝑘 𝑆ℎ𝑖𝑡ℎ𝑜𝑢𝑠𝑒 and 𝐴𝑙𝑙𝑒𝑟𝑔𝑖𝑐, all of which set the mood and pace for the reminder of the show. Each song was greeted as if Real Madrid had just set scored a goal by the crowd, with their arms aloft clapping rhythmically to the music.


𝑌𝑜𝑢 𝐷𝑜𝑛'𝑡 𝐶𝑎𝑟𝑒 𝐴𝑏𝑜𝑢𝑡 𝑈𝑠 followed, with all the confidence of a band who were playing their 300th gig, keeping up the pace as the Spanish crowd sung along. Next up was the song that was written to be played in stadiums, the anthem that is 𝐵𝑖𝑜𝑛𝑖𝑐, which seems to get better with every play. As the song drew to a close with 𝐵𝑟𝑖𝑎𝑛 teasing out the last few notes on his guitar, all hands in the stadium were raised with applause... quite something to watch !


Just when you thought the pace would drop, 36 𝐷𝑒𝑔𝑟𝑒𝑒𝑠 was launched upon the sweltering crowd and went down a storm. It is then that 𝑃𝑙𝑎𝑐𝑒𝑏𝑜 decided to give the 18.000 strong crowd some respite from all the jumping around and play the album track 𝑊𝑖𝑡ℎ𝑜𝑢𝑡 𝑌𝑜𝑢 𝐼'𝑚 𝑁𝑜𝑡ℎ𝑖𝑛𝑔. Has it been dark at this point, I could have done a roaring trade in lighters. A brilliant performance of a song that emphasizes the versatility and passion that 𝑃𝑙𝑎𝑐𝑒𝑏𝑜 possess. The watching 𝑀𝑖𝑐ℎ𝑎𝑒𝑙 𝑆𝑡𝑖𝑝𝑒 and 𝐶𝑜𝑢𝑟𝑡𝑛𝑒𝑦 𝐿𝑜𝑣𝑒 (side stage) could not fail to be impressed by the haunting song with such great lyrical content.


𝐸𝑣𝑒𝑟𝑦 𝑌𝑜𝑢 𝐸𝑣𝑒𝑟𝑦 𝑀𝑒 was swifty followed by 𝐵𝑟𝑢𝑖𝑠𝑒 𝑃𝑟𝑖𝑠𝑡𝑖𝑛𝑒 both enthusiastically recieved. The welcome return to the set for 𝑇𝑒𝑒𝑛𝑎𝑔𝑒 𝐴𝑛𝑔𝑠𝑡 (rock version) was next, which has always been a favourite of mine. It is definitely a 'get the hairs on the back of your neck standing' song !


𝑆𝑙𝑎𝑐𝑘𝑒𝑟𝑏𝑖𝑡𝑐ℎ is next up, providing a signal for more 'chiquitas' to get up on their boyfriends backs and jump about. The band are playing so well a tighter unit of three musicians would be hard to find. 𝐵𝑟𝑖𝑎𝑛 dominates the centre stage whilst 𝑆𝑡𝑒𝑓𝑎𝑛 uses every inch of his 6 ft 7" frame to great effect to the right of the stage and 𝑆𝑡𝑒𝑣𝑒 quite simply is the best rock drummer on the planet ! The enchanting 𝐿𝑎𝑑𝑦 𝑂𝑓 𝑇ℎ𝑒 𝐹𝑙𝑜𝑤𝑒𝑟𝑠 provides another much needed respite as the heat kicks in, before the epic 𝑁𝑎𝑛𝑐𝑦 𝐵𝑜𝑦.


The storming finale is complete with the rock anthem of 1999, 𝑃𝑢𝑟𝑒 𝑀𝑜𝑟𝑛𝑖𝑛𝑔. It feels like all 18.000 people are singing along - even the jumbo jets which are coming in to land a few miles beyond the stage cannot be heard as 𝑃𝑢𝑟𝑒 𝑀𝑜𝑟𝑛𝑖𝑛𝑔' is that loud and rocking that everything else is quite simply blown away ! A fantastic show with a fantastic finale !📕

🔸 What I like about this review is that the author, 𝑆𝑐𝑜𝑡𝑙𝑎𝑛𝑑, is so delighted to share his feelings that it is communicative, even though the concert took place a long time ago. The crowd went wild as Placebo played their best as the heat hit hard . And that's what's good ! 💝

The 𝐀𝐑𝐓𝐈𝐂𝐋𝐄 I’m going to share with you today was publishes 20 years later after the legendary performance. The 1999 Brit Awards were the 19th edition of the biggest annual pop music awards in the United Kingdom and took place on 𝐅𝐞𝐛𝐫𝐮𝐚𝐫𝐲 𝟏𝟔𝐭𝐡 at the 𝑳𝒐𝒏𝒅𝒐𝒏 𝑨𝒓𝒆𝒏𝒂.
On that day, David Bowie joined Placebo on stage to perform 20th Century Boy with them.

📍Placebo recorded their version of the song in 1998 specifically for the movie 𝑽𝒆𝒍𝒗𝒆𝒕 𝑮𝒐𝒍𝒅𝒎𝒊𝒏𝒆 where Brian and other band members appeared as actors in small roles.

📍As Brian admitted, 20th Century Boy never belonged to their favourites, so it was performed live only three times. Besides The Brit Awards, it was played next month at Irving Plaza in New York City, also with David Bowie, and then, on July 28th 2000 at Fuji Rock festival in Japan.

📢 𝐁𝐫𝐢𝐚𝐧: "That version would never be made by ourselves, just for the pleasure of it. It is not a song that has a special cling to us, we did the version ‘cause it was needed for the film. We don't even own any T.Rex record. But naturally, it was a song that we knew for many years... We listened to it on the radio. We have never been T.Rex fans, and we just do versions of songs that we like and from artists we are fond of."

Fronted by the enigmatic Brian Molko, Placebo were a force to be reckoned with in the ’90s – they offered something different to the laddishness of Britpop and the nerdiness of Radiohead. Their brand of subversive alt-rock cultivated a mass of fanatical followers caught in the tightly woven net of androgynous angst and sublime songwriting. It was only a matter of time before the original agitator David Bowie would find a project to collaborate on.

That project came sooner rather than later. In the early days of Placebo, with Molko and Osdal having only demos to their name, they had one major fan – David Bowie. Not a bad place to start eh? Never one to miss the opportunity to promote the music he felt deserved a place on the mantel of music, Bowie then invited the band to open for his now-infamous Outside Tour. Bowie would also lend his vocals to the 1998 recording of Placebo’s ‘Without You I’m Nothing’.

In particular, Molko was very close to Bowie with the latter providing Molko with advice throughout his career. He recently opened up [...] about his presence: “He was my friend and my mentor. He gave me a lot of advice. I’m meditating more on how he was quite a sage and quite a raconteur as well.”
A more intimate collaboration came in the form of a special BRIT Awards performance in 1999 that saw Placebo supported by Bowie covering another glam-rock icon’s biggest hit; Marc Bolan’s ’20th Century Boy’. Released in 1971, the song marked one of the last triumphant moments of Bolan’s sadly short career. It was a song that Placebo were already familiar with having covered the smash-hit for the soundtrack to the film Velvet Goldmine, though following Bowie rejecting the chance to have his own music appear in the film Molko said the pair “agreed never to talk about”.
The track was and remains today, an absolute dancefloor smash. Built on a simple but encouraging lead guitar (so chunky it barely needed dressing), flourished with garish and provocative lyrics, the song has effortlessly become a cross-generational smash. Nowhere is that more easily seen than in this clip from the 1999 BRIT Awards.

On one side of the stage stands the present of rock and roll. Brian Molko and his sparkling charcoaled eyes, full of the kind of sneering misunderstanding that can drive so many to mania. On the other stood an original of the glam-rock era passing the goth-glittered baton across with every lyric he sang. He plays his Tin Machine-era headless guitar and seems happy to let Molko take the spotlight. “We weren’t too bad, we were in key at least,” Molko later told Melody Maker. “But we could never really get the lyrics right. We were doing ’20th Century Boy’. We had a fucking laugh.”

The sound mixing may be a bit dodgy but the performance of this song, in particular, strikes a special chord with fans of both artists. For Placebo fans, it marks a moment in their history that they were named as “the future” by Bowie, of all people. While for Bowie fans it’s a clear indication of his admiration for them, as well as a rousing tribute to his departed friend.

Whichever way you look at it this is a moment worth savouring. So watch as Placebo are joined on stage by David Bowie to perform T-Rex’s hit ’20th Century Boy’ live at the BRITS in 1999.

20th Century Boy is a song by an English rock band 𝐓. 𝐑𝐞𝐱, written by 𝑴𝒂𝒓𝒄 𝑩𝒐𝒍𝒂𝒏.
It was released as a single and entered in the UK Singles Chart at number 3 on 10 March 1973 where it peaked three weeks in a row at that position.

20th Century Boy's lyrics are, according to Marc Bolan, based on quotes taken from notable celebrities such as Muhammad Ali. This can be seen through the inclusion of the line "sting like a bee", which is taken from one of Ali's 1969 speeches.

💬My guests today are a band that after only two albums is said to have transformed the face of 90's rock music by bringing together fans of metal, pop, rock or even dance music. Please welcome Steve Hewitt, Stefan Olsdal and Brian Molko. Thank you for making a triumph to Placebo.

Thank you for being here. This is really a great moment for us. An important moment and an emotional moment as well because it was a really important thing to have you here, live in the studio both on radio and TV.

𝑩𝒓𝒊𝒂𝒏: Thank you. It's also a big moment for me. I was born in Brussels, that's why.

💬Yes. You announced this at Le Botanique gig on November 11th saying: "I'm moved because I was born in Brussels". We knew you had lived in Luxembourg.

𝑩𝒓𝒊𝒂𝒏: There is a little statue of me peeing everywhere. It's called the Manneken-Pis, they made it after me.

💬The big question is are we doing this interview in French or both English and French?

𝑩𝒓𝒊𝒂𝒏: In 'Frenglish'. In beteween the two.

💬Steve is for French.

𝑺𝒕𝒆𝒗𝒆: More french than English please.

💬I think this is your first live appearance in three weeks. Your last show was in Singapore three weeks ago. And you've had a bit of a holiday.

𝑩𝒓𝒊𝒂𝒏: Yeah. A holiday in Bali.

💬A real holiday then, not just a day off. Something happened I think in Singapore. A positive thing: you got a gold record?

𝑩𝒓𝒊𝒂𝒏: From Singapore, no. From New Zealand, Ireland and also from England.

💬That's five in all.

In Singapore, there was a little problem because...

𝑩𝒓𝒊𝒂𝒏: No, no. There's a law in Singapore against being a transvestite basically. To impersonate a female on stage. We said we never try to be women. We are men. What we do with our image is to create a new image for men. It's not about being a tranny. That's the difference and everyone thought I was going to wear a dress but Stef did it.

𝑺𝒕𝒆𝒇𝒂𝒏: Get away with it. No problem.Whatsoever.

💬So, he has no problem with it.Or any of the band actually?

𝑩𝒓𝒊𝒂𝒏: No. We didn't get arrested.

💬You were talking about your image just now. Placebo has a very strong image, a rather flamboyant image that you never use on the record covers, or on the albums, or even on the singles. I suppose there's a reason for that. Do you think it's maybe better or better to communicate with other images than yours on the covers?

𝑩𝒓𝒊𝒂𝒏: We've always thought that music videos, record covers are something that is necessary. But if it's necessary, it has to be art. It has to communicate emotion, it has to say something about the human being. We also think it's a bit of a cliché, old-school to have our three faces on the cover of the record. We like to do things with a bit more imagination, more artistic.

💬On the first album, we see this little boy who represents both innocence and complete terror. His head is frightened so there's a kind of contradiction between the image...

𝑩𝒓𝒊𝒂𝒏: It's the teenager growing up but afraid of the world, the big world out there.

💬On the second album cover, there are two twin sisters looking at each other. What did you want to say with this image?

𝑩𝒓𝒊𝒂𝒏: It was important for us to show an image that was a relationship between two people, but not a sexual one, but bigger than that. I think you can't understand the relationship between two twin brothers or twin sisters unless you are. It was something mysterious.

💬Is that the case for any of you in the band?

𝑩𝒓𝒊𝒂𝒏: No, I have lots of clones but no twins.

💬I think that in the US, Brian, you are also a kind of pop icon because Calvin Klein asked you to a fashion show or to do pictures for him. Is that true or is that another rumour?

𝑩𝒓𝒊𝒂𝒏: No. I've done photos for Calvin Klein. There was me, Shirley Manson, Melissa from Hole, Kim Gordon from Sonic Youth, Foxy Brown. They chose...

💬All together?

𝑩𝒓𝒊𝒂𝒏: No. Separately. They chose ten personalities, ten musicians for the new Calvin Klein line. I beat out hundreds and hundreds of American musicians to do it. I got a lot of free Calvin Klein clothes.

💬Did you give them to your mates? You're from different sizes.

𝑩𝒓𝒊𝒂𝒏: Yes. I bought underwears for everyone. Yeah, I bought underwears for everyone who works for us. About 20 pairs of briefs, all extra large of course.

💬For Calvin Klein, was it photos or a fashion show?

𝑩𝒓𝒊𝒂𝒏: Photos. It's going to be in Vogue, it's going to be in all the fashion magazines. It's going to be on posters everywhere for the new line.

💬When you started this American tour, there was of course a stop in New York..

𝑩𝒓𝒊𝒂𝒏: We did 20th Century Boy. He sang on Without You I'm Nothing.

💬Are there any projects that will continue with him other than on stage?

𝑩𝒓𝒊𝒂𝒏: We went into the studio, we did a little thing with him. We'll see, we're still waiting for it to come out. We want it to be a surprise

💬Is it your song or his?

𝑩𝒓𝒊𝒂𝒏: It's our song. A kind of collaboration. It will be very interesting.

You refuse to play that song because you don't like covers that you don't want to play on stage ? But you play covers !

𝑩𝒓𝒊𝒂𝒏: We're playing a cover song today. A cover of Big Star that was written by Alex Chilton called 'Holocaust'.

💬You've already played it in Paris

𝑩𝒓𝒊𝒂𝒏: At the Zénith.

💬What is the meaning of this song ?

𝑩𝒓𝒊𝒂𝒏: It's one of the saddest songs we've ever heard.

💬Is it about suicide ?

𝑩𝒓𝒊𝒂𝒏: It's about death. It's about the death of the mother of the person in the song. It was Steve who introduced me to that Big Star album, 'Sister Lovers', and I've always loved that album. 'Holocaust' is a song that was one of our favourites. We always play it at rehearsals. We played it in Paris to have a little fun. But the thing about '20th Century Boy' is that we did it for a movie and that was it. The context became too big for what we really wanted to do with it. We don't have any T-Rex records at home. We must have listened to T-Rex together once on the bus. If we had chosen a cover song to make a hit, it wouldn't have been '20th Century Boy'. You have to try and avoid the 'Joe Cocker syndrome'.

💬There's no risk at the moment.

𝑩𝒓𝒊𝒂𝒏: The 'Joe Cocker syndrome' is when you become more famous with a song someone else has written than with your own.

💬We could listen to each other again for example or see, for those who follow us on TV, a video that we've seen a lot on the music channels on TV. A song we've heard a lot on the radio is 'You Don't Care About Us'. We see you diving with sharks in this video. Who made the video ? Do you have an anecdote about the shooting ?

𝑩𝒓𝒊𝒂𝒏: It's John Hillcoat who did a lot of videos for Nick Cave and Einstürzende Neubauten. He's an Australian. 'Ghost... Of The Civil Dead' and a film with Tchéky Karyo whose name I can't remember, his last film. The anecdotes, we filmed from 7pm until 7am and we all have a small pneumonia.
