Today I have an old ๐ˆ๐๐“๐„๐‘๐•๐ˆ๐„๐– with Brian from the late 90ies for you, it was printed in The Sun Herald in 1999. Brian talks about David Bowie, the weirdest gifts he has received from fans, the last time he cried, modeling for Calvin Klein, drinking with Marilyn Manson and leaving dirty messages on Madonna's answering machine.  ๐Ÿ“ข“Yes. We realised we had a lot of fans in Australia. But we played clubs. We met so many kids at (CD) signings who couldn't see us. They begged us to play all ages shows. The invitation to support silverchair was quite fortuitous. We've done a lot of festival gigs with them and they rock.“

๐Ÿ“ข “David fell completely in love with the song when we played it together at the Brit awards. We were in New York at the same time, and he came in the studio to record it. It was quite surreal telling him 'David I think you can sing it a little better'.“

Being in a successful band opens up so many new doors, from modeling to movies to musical collaborations. Once you get to a level where that happens its great.“

๐ŸŽธ It’s been great. We went to number one in France.

๐ŸŽธ Yeah, we toured for Without You for fifteen months and then were in the studio for the new album for nine months. It’s been like a pregnancy from conception to delivery.


๐ŸŽค ๐—›๐—ผ๐˜„ ๐˜„๐—ฎ๐˜€ ๐˜๐—ต๐—ฒ ๐˜€๐˜๐˜‚๐—ฑ๐—ถ๐—ผ ๐˜๐—ต๐—ถ๐˜€ ๐—ด๐—ผ ๐—ฎ๐—ฟ๐—ผ๐˜‚๐—ป๐—ฑ?
๐ŸŽธ We laughed our way through this one. The second one was full of relationship troubles and we weren’t feeling good psychologically and didn’t get along with our producer. This time we co-produced and it was more creative and inspiring.


๐ŸŽค ๐—ช๐—ฒ๐—ฟ๐—ฒ ๐˜†๐—ผ๐˜‚ ๐˜„๐—ผ๐—ฟ๐—ธ๐—ถ๐—ป๐—ด ๐—ผ๐—ป ๐—บ๐˜‚๐˜€๐—ถ๐—ฐ ๐—ฏ๐—ฒ๐—ณ๐—ผ๐—ฟ๐—ฒ ๐˜†๐—ผ๐˜‚ ๐—ฒ๐—ป๐˜๐—ฒ๐—ฟ๐—ฒ๐—ฑ ๐˜๐—ต๐—ฒ ๐˜€๐˜๐˜‚๐—ฑ๐—ถ๐—ผ?
๐ŸŽธ We wrote most of the album after we finished the tour. When we went to the studio we had it all in us really from playing the new songs too much. We were dying to do new stuff.


๐ŸŽค ๐—ช๐—ต๐—ฎ๐˜ ๐—ฑ๐—ผ ๐˜†๐—ผ๐˜‚ ๐˜๐—ต๐—ถ๐—ป๐—ธ ๐˜๐—ต๐—ฒ ๐—ฑ๐—ถ๐—ณ๐—ณ๐—ฒ๐—ฟ๐—ฒ๐—ป๐—ฐ๐—ฒ๐˜€ ๐—ฏ๐—ฒ๐˜๐˜„๐—ฒ๐—ฒ๐—ป ๐—•๐—น๐—ฎ๐—ฐ๐—ธ ๐— ๐—ฎ๐—ฟ๐—ธ๐—ฒ๐˜ ๐—ฎ๐—ป๐—ฑ ๐˜๐—ต๐—ฒ ๐—ฝ๐—ฟ๐—ฒ๐˜ƒ๐—ถ๐—ผ๐˜‚๐˜€ ๐—ฟ๐—ฒ๐—น๐—ฒ๐—ฎ๐˜€๐—ฒ๐˜€ ๐—ฎ๐—ฟ๐—ฒ?
๐ŸŽธ I think its an angrier record. I think it is more coherent. I think it rocks more. I think we had all of that in the back of our minds when we wrote this album. Because Without You I’m Nothing was a bit skitzo. It didn’t know if it wanted to be a punk album or a melodramatic love song album. I think it suffered from being slow in some places. On a submusical level we wanted to keep this one up.


๐ŸŽค ๐—•๐—น๐—ฎ๐—ฐ๐—ธ ๐— ๐—ฎ๐—ฟ๐—ธ๐—ฒ๐˜ ๐˜€๐—ฒ๐—ฒ๐—บ๐˜€ ๐—บ๐—ผ๐—ฟ๐—ฒ ๐—ฝ๐—ฎ๐˜€๐˜€๐—ถ๐—ผ๐—ป๐—ฎ๐˜๐—ฒ ๐˜๐—ผ ๐—บ๐—ฒ.
๐ŸŽธ I think we matured more as songwriters. We definitely decided to put music ahead of our lifestyles as we did in our past as well. Which is something I think we’ve fallen victims to.

๐ŸŽธ It was really cool. It actually felt really natural. It was a song that didn’t have a chorus at the time. We were like “what the fuck are we going to do here?” And we were like “fuck, lets do a rap”. And it seemed crazy, but it really turned out to be a great idea. We knew Justin Warfield for a few years and got him to come over. And it was just that one second before he opened his mouth where we were like ‘shit, I hope this thing works’ and then he opened his mouth and it was like ‘ahhhhh’.

It's an album that is already a classic, that's where they started using guitars and combining them with their synthesizer sound, something they hadn't done in the ten years they had been a band. I like it because they write dark lyrics, and that's why they are best listened to at night. This album also became the soundtrack to the moment when I was coming to terms with my identity and my sexuality. It was a very troubling and emotional time in my life, and ๐‘ซ๐’†๐’‘๐’†๐’„๐’‰๐’† ๐‘ด๐’๐’…๐’†'s music helped me deal with some very dark feelings. I've always wanted to emulate that simplicity and style of songwriting in all the musical projects I've been in. ๐‘ฝ๐’Š๐’๐’๐’‚๐’•๐’๐’“ is their most concise and most sublime album, and it's the pinnacle of synth pop.

๐ŸŽค I first heard ๐‘ฎ๐’๐’ in London in 1994 in a social housing apartment and that's when ๐‘ฉ๐’“๐’Š๐’‚๐’ ๐‘ด๐’๐’๐’Œ๐’ put this record on to show me. ๐‘ฎ๐’๐’ changed the way I saw guitar music until then. My favorite songs are "๐‘ป๐’–๐’๐’Š๐’„ (๐‘บ๐’๐’๐’ˆ ๐’‡๐’๐’“ ๐‘ฒ๐’‚๐’“๐’†๐’)" and "๐‘ด๐’Š๐’๐’…๐’“๐’†๐’… ๐‘ท๐’Š๐’†๐’“๐’„๐’†". They approach their guitars in a pretty punk way, uninterested in all the standard chord shapes and tunings, even creating their own sound passages, almost melodies made with feedback, which is usually seen as just noise or an unwanted by-product of playing electric guitar. Often, when I'm composing something on guitar and I feel that I like what I'm doing, I end up realizing that I'm playing something that ๐‘บ๐’๐’๐’Š๐’„ ๐’€๐’๐’–๐’•๐’‰ had already done (laughs). This is their most punkish expression, more melodic but also more abrasive.

They had parties on Saturdays and invited all their friends, who came to eat, drink and dance. My favorite song is "๐‘ป๐’‰๐’† ๐‘ซ๐’‚๐’š ๐‘ฉ๐’†๐’‡๐’๐’“๐’† ๐’€๐’๐’– ๐‘ช๐’‚๐’Ž๐’†". I love that analog pop sound, and I can just imagine the magnetic tape spinning as ๐‘ฉ๐’‹๐’̈๐’“๐’ and ๐‘ฉ๐’†๐’๐’๐’š (the ๐‘ฉ's of ๐‘จ๐‘ฉ๐‘ฉ๐‘จ) sit at an old console, putting the finishing touches to that mix, with all the amazing backing vocals and those keyboards and guitars that fit so perfectly. They write perfect pop free of fat and that sounds warm. I have a ritual of dancing to ๐‘จ๐‘ฉ๐‘ฉ๐‘จ, but only for my birthday. They're a bit like cake to me, they're great for once in a while, but if it's too much I don't feel very good. Sometimes I find I do bass lines that remind me of some of their vocal melodies, as the talent they have for hooks is amazing. That's their last album and also the darkest and most melancholic, and that's an emotion that they deal with in a very beautiful way.

My favorite song is "๐‘ป๐’๐’Ž๐’๐’“๐’“๐’๐’˜ ๐‘ต๐’†๐’—๐’†๐’“ ๐‘ฒ๐’๐’๐’˜๐’”". ๐‘น๐’†๐’—๐’๐’๐’—๐’†๐’“ was my introduction to 60s psychedelic pop. Here there are things like songs where the sitar is the main instrument, and others about life being nothing more than a dream. They were experimenting with recording techniques and sounds, and they were very adventurous with the structures of these songs. I listen to this album and it sounds timeless to me, every time I listen to it I discover new subtleties, even though it was only recorded on four tracks. There are lessons to be learned here, about melody and making a personal musical statement in two minutes. Most of the songs are only that long.
