The song was written by ๐‘ฉ๐’“๐’Š๐’‚๐’ and his friend ๐‘ท๐’‚๐’–๐’ ๐‘ช๐’‚๐’Ž๐’‘๐’Š๐’๐’, lead singer of ๐€๐‚ ๐€๐œ๐จ๐ฎ๐ฌ๐ญ๐ข๐œ๐ฌ. As Brian later said, Paul “helped me out on the lyrics for Every You Every Me on the second album when I had a writer’s block.” (๐‘†๐‘’๐‘ ๐‘ ๐‘–๐‘œ๐‘› ๐‘Ž๐‘ก ๐ด๐‘‚๐ฟ 2004)

When asked who the song was about, ๐‘ฉ๐’“๐’Š๐’‚๐’ replied in his typical ironic style
“Who's it about? I'm not really too sure just yet. I think it's about a lot of people. Probably anybody... everybody who's had the displeasure of sleeping with me. (laughs) I want to stress that I said displeasure there.” (laughs)

Along with the rest of the album (apart from Pure Morning), Every You Every Me was recorded in early 1998 at Real World Studios with Steve Osborne.

The single managed to chart at number 11 on the UK Singles Chart, number 46 in Australia, and number 99 in Germany.

It was voted from a poll of 500,000 votes to be ranked number 83 on the list of the Hottest 100 of All Time in July 2009, conducted by Australian radio station Triple J.

Croatian metal band ๐‘จ๐’”๐’‰๐’†๐’” ๐’€๐’๐’– ๐‘ณ๐’†๐’‚๐’—๐’† covered Every You Every Me on their 2009 album Songs of the Lost. and in 2017, ๐‘ณ๐’Š๐’”๐’‚ ๐‘ด๐’Š๐’•๐’„๐’‰๐’†๐’๐’ covered the song on her EP When They Play That Song.

The song was featured on the soundtrack of the famous American movie ๐‚๐ซ๐ฎ๐ž๐ฅ ๐ˆ๐ง๐ญ๐ž๐ง๐ญ๐ข๐จ๐ง๐ฌ which became another breakthrough moment for Placebo. A lot of people, and in the US particularly, got to know the band thanks to the film and stayed fans ever since.

๐๐ซ๐ข๐š๐ง: "I studied drama, I know the original [Dangerous Liaisons] and we watched it on the tour bus when they wanted to use our song. I said: 'If he doesn't die in the end, if it's a happy ending, we don't do it.' It's quite perverted and manipulative, so the theme of the song fits in quite well."

However, there’s a third video for Every You Every Me (so called ๐€๐ฏ๐ข๐ ๐‚๐ฎ๐ญ or ๐„๐ฒ๐ž๐ฌ ๐•๐ž๐ซ๐ฌ๐ข๐จ๐ง) that was recorded on November 11th, 1998, but wasn’t released with the single due to management’s decision and remained buried in the band’s archive for 18 years! ๐Ÿ“ข ๐๐ซ๐ข๐š๐ง: “The live video was filmed at Brixton Academy. It was first time we used live footage. This song was the theme tune to the film ‘Cruel Intentions’, which was ‘Les Liaisons Dangereuses’ transported to Upper West Side of New York. It’s a teen film. There’s another version where they intercut it with parts from the film. Even though I’m wearing a rather fetching John Richmond dress, which cost a lot of money, I still look silly. It’s one of my many fashion crimes I was guilty of early in our career.
This video’s also a bit of a cop-out, because we made another video, which didn’t involve performance. It was about twins and never got released. It was banned by management. So we had to pull one together from footage that we’d filmed at Brixton Academy.”

Every You Every Me has got a very impressive ๐ฅ๐ข๐ฏ๐ž ๐ก๐ข๐ฌ๐ญ๐จ๐ซ๐ฒ. It was performed on stage at least 745 times, more than any other Placebo song!
