16 years ago, on the 30th of May 2005, “First day“ was released, so today we can celebrate its ♦️๐—”๐—ก๐—ก๐—œ๐—ฉ๐—˜๐—ฅ๐—ฆ๐—”๐—ฅ๐—ฌ♦️. The song was a collaboration of German DJ W Timo Maas, Brian and Jokate (or Jo Kate) Benson, a relatively unknown singer from Bristol. The song reached no. 51 in the UK Single Charts.

Two different versions of the single were put out. One of them includes the radio edit of “First day“ and an extendend version, the other one consists of six remixes plus the video clip. The song also appears on the album “Pictures“ which was released in June 2005.
“First day“ was written by Brian, Jokate, Timo Maas and Martin Buttrich, the two last-named were the producers of the single. Martin is obviously an all-rounder when it comes to playing instruments he did the bass, guitar, drums and also keybords on the track.

Last but not least remember this:
It's always the first day of the rest of your life. Seize it, soulmates!

"We were coming to the end of the summer and Michael (sic!) and me were kind of stuck. We'd finished the instrumentals and were looking for our dream collaborators but they weren't easy to get. Then we sent something to Brian and he was totally up for it, came over to Hannover and recorded two of the three tracks in a day, then we met up in London to do the third. It was great to work with him, to get into his world – we had a fantastic time."

"I find that aspect of working with other people collaboratively interesting. When you get into a collaboration, you have to relinquish control. The final product is up to other people. It's a good lesson for me, it teaches me to be less precious about it. I haven't necessarily been able to put that into practice when working on a Placebo record just yet."

Let's go back in time to April 1st, 2017, when ๐‘ท๐’๐’‚๐’„๐’†๐’ƒ๐’ performed at the ๐‘น๐’๐’™๐’š: ๐‘ด๐’–๐’”๐’Š๐’„ ๐’‚๐’๐’…

This annual festival is considered the most successful Mexican festival in its first edition because with the quality and variety of its line-up featuring bands such as ๐‘ด๐’๐’“๐’“๐’Š๐’”๐’†๐’š, ๐‘ฌ๐’Ž๐’‘๐’Š๐’“๐’† ๐‘ถ๐’‡ ๐‘ป๐’‰๐’† ๐‘บ๐’–๐’, ๐‘ฑ๐’‚๐’Ž๐’†๐’”, ๐‘บ๐’Ž๐’‚๐’”๐’‰ ๐‘ด๐’๐’–๐’•๐’‰, ๐‘ท๐’๐’‚๐’„๐’†๐’ƒ๐’ among others, it managed to attract more than 20,000 people, of which 35% came from other cities.
The one-day festival is distinguished by the gastronomic section that brings together the best chefs in the country, as well as the fact that each edition pays tribute to a famous artist or band. In 2017, the artist honored was ๐‘ซ๐’‚๐’—๐’Š๐’… ๐‘ฉ๐’๐’˜๐’Š๐’†. According to the organizers, each one of the participating bands had been asked to include a ๐‘ฉ๐’๐’˜๐’Š๐’† cover in their setlist, but they all ignored the request.

๐Ÿ”น๐‘ท๐’๐’‚๐’„๐’†๐’ƒ๐’ took the stage at 22:20 hrs. and for one hour and ten minutes, they celebrated their twenty years of career performing 15 of their greatest hits, with which they made the audience sing and vibrate their hearts.
There is a lot of curiosity around why ๐‘ฉ๐’“๐’Š๐’‚๐’ ๐‘ด๐’๐’๐’Œ๐’ wore a mask during almost the entire concert. Some rumors said it was because he was sick, since days before the concert ๐‘ท๐’๐’‚๐’„๐’†๐’ƒ๐’ would offer in Merida had been cancelled due to illness of a member of the band - without having specified who -, but apparently it was simply because the ground of ๐‘ป๐’“๐’‚๐’”๐’๐’๐’Ž๐’‚ ๐‘ท๐’‚๐’“๐’Œ, where the festival was held, was very dusty and ๐‘ฉ๐’“๐’Š๐’‚๐’ decided to wear this mask so he wouldn't breathe it. In fact, there were so many complaints about the dust from the attendees that the next year the organizers decided to hold the festival in another place.

๐Ÿ”ธ๐‘ท๐’๐’‚๐’„๐’†๐’ƒ๐’ did not perform soundcheck because the day before this festival they played at ๐‘ท๐’‚'๐’ ๐‘ต๐’๐’“๐’•๐’† ๐‘ญ๐’†๐’”๐’•๐’Š๐’—๐’‚๐’ in ๐‘ด๐’๐’๐’•๐’†๐’“๐’“๐’†๐’š, ๐‘ด๐’†๐’™๐’Š๐’„๐’.

๐Ÿ”ธThree hours before ๐‘ท๐’๐’‚๐’„๐’†๐’ƒ๐’'s concert, ๐‘ฉ๐’“๐’Š๐’‚๐’ ๐‘ด๐’๐’๐’Œ๐’ went up to the stage where the Argentine artist ๐‘ญ๐’Š๐’•๐’ ๐‘ท๐’‚́๐’†๐’› (very good by the way) was performing to see his show and the atmosphere of the audience.

๐Ÿ”ธ๐‘ท๐’๐’‚๐’„๐’†๐’ƒ๐’ and ๐‘ด๐’๐’“๐’“๐’Š๐’”๐’†๐’š were the most guarded artists during their stay at the festival.

Do you remember that photo posted on ๐‘ท๐’๐’‚๐’„๐’†๐’ƒ๐’'s official Instagram where ๐‘ฉ๐’“๐’Š๐’‚๐’ ๐‘ด๐’๐’๐’Œ๐’ is wearing a jacket with the phrase "๐‘ด๐’†๐’™๐’Š๐’„๐’ ๐‘ฐ๐’” ๐‘ป๐’‰๐’† ๐‘บ๐’‰*๐’•" on the back? Well, that photo was taken during the ๐‘น๐’๐’™๐’š ๐‘ญ๐’†๐’”๐’• and the jacket is a creation of Mexicans ๐‘จ๐’‰๐’Ž๐’†๐’… ๐‘ฉ๐’‚๐’–๐’•๐’Š๐’”๐’•๐’‚ and ๐‘จ๐’๐’–๐’‚๐’“ ๐‘ณ๐’‚๐’š๐’́๐’ that went viral in 2016 when a photographer posed with it in front of ๐‘ป๐’“๐’–๐’Ž๐’‘ ๐‘ป๐’๐’˜๐’†๐’“ as a response to the U.S. President's anti-immigrant speech and shared the image on Instagram.
It later caused controversy in Mexico because a Twitter user saw some people in a hotel wearing the jacket and thought it was an offense towards the country. For this reason, one of its creators came out to explain why they chose to put this ๐˜Œ๐˜ฏ๐˜จ๐˜ญ๐˜ช๐˜ด๐˜ฉ ๐˜ด๐˜ญ๐˜ข๐˜ฏ๐˜จ phrase on their garment:

๐ŸŽ™️"It is not an ode or a shout to what is happening in the political issue, but an issue of what we Mexicans are doing in the world."
"The jacket is in English because we wanted to impact the world with the phrase that Mexico is cool, that Mexico is incredible for us. In Spanish it was more complicated. We all know that English is the universal language, which reigns in communication in the world, in many areas," explained ๐‘จ๐’๐’–๐’‚๐’“ ๐‘ณ๐’‚๐’š๐’́๐’.

Also on the inside of each one of the jackets there is a manifesto, which reads as follows:

We all know that the single version of “๐™’๐™ž๐™ฉ๐™๐™ค๐™ช๐™ฉ ๐™ฎ๐™ค๐™ช ๐™„'๐™ข ๐™ฃ๐™ค๐™ฉ๐™๐™ž๐™ฃ๐™œ” is a collaboration of Placebo with David Bowie, but did you know that there's also a live collaboration of the song with another legendary artist? It's The Cure founder and frontman Robert Smith, style icon and role model for generations of goths.

On November 5th 2004 he was special guest at the concert at Wembley Arena in London. It was the kick-off show of the short “Once more with feeling” tour and also the only gig of that tour that took place outside of South America.
The audience didn't know that Robert Smith would be part of the evening. He entered the stage during the first encore, right after Placebo had played “Twenty years”. Robert and the band performed two songs together. They started with “Without you I'm nothing” which was followed by The Cure cover “Boys don't cry”.

But this wasn't the only time they appeared on stage together in 2004. On October 14th they collaborated again at the 20 years anniversary show of French TV channel Canal+. This time they chose a Cure cover again and played “If only tonight we could sleep” from the iconic album “Disintegration”.

In 2018 Robert Smith curated Meltdown festival in London and invited Placebo to play there. The line-up also included Nine Inch Nails, My Bloody Valentine, Death Cab For Cutie, Manic Street Preachers and The Twilight Sad. To honor Smith Placebo put “Let's go to bed” by The Cure on their setlist. They also performed the songs at three more festivals the following month.

Carol Fairbrother from Virgin Music asked me to write [a script of] the video for this song. And along with it, the one for the song 'Because I Want You' which was supposed to be released as single in the UK. And ‘Song To Say Goodbye’ was intended for France and other European countries. The record company asked me to come up with a common idea for both songs and was going to entrust me with shooting one of the videos. I wrote two scripts for 'Song To Say Goodbye' and two for 'Because I Want You'. I had a third option for 'Song To Say Goodbye' too, but I didn't dare send it. It was too unusual ... more like a short film than a video ... of course, the band was not supposed to appear in it. And it was kind of not in the spirit of Placebo at all, considering their previous video works. I didn’t describe my idea in the best way: ten lines on one page and several photos that I took in Los Angeles. That’s all. But luckily, I sent this option too. Brian liked the idea immediately and chose this script.
Later he told me that my idea was very different from those that he had ever received, and that I had succeeded in giving his lyrics a new interpretation. Brian knew me mostly from the video I shot for 'Another Chance' by Roger Sanchez. In it, a girl wanders around New York at night with a huge red heart in her hands which shrinks until she meets her soulmate. He said that was his favorite video. First, we talked by the phone. Everything was very simple and natural. We talked mainly about photography, cinema which he loves: Wenders, Gus Van Sente, Jarmusch and others. We had the same guidelines for the video. I told him about Antonini and Ozu, about their ideal tricks for filming children: when you place cameras at knee level to show everything as the child sees it. He and I intended to do something like a short film. He really didn't want to appear in the video. It was a feeling that we were on the same wavelength, he trusted me completely, and preparations for the filming started.

Philip doesn’t shoot many videos because he believes that videos can mostly simplify and impoverish music. But he admits that with Placebo, everything was completely different. They belong to those rare musicians who allow the author to give free rein to his imagination and expect real cooperation and response from him. “Usually, the idea comes to me when I listen to the lyrics and feel the tempo, vibration of music. I listen to the song 50 times, 100 times. First of all, it is necessary to plunge into the personal universe of the artist, the band - if I’m not familiar with them well enough. Sometimes this is not so easy, as it requires a very hasty analysis to quickly "enter" the topic and find an appropriate angle [of view]. It is absolutely impossible to fit an already existing idea into a band. It is necessary to proceed from what a band, an artist is, and look for an idea from the inside. It may sound simple, but sometimes it takes a week to develop an idea while the record label asks for a project "the next day." We have to deliberately delay the case. In the case of ‘Song To Say Goodbye’, the music was leading me to something constantly moving, floating but at the same time impetuous, and the idea of an unusual road movie came up very quickly. The emotions that were born in me when listening to the song pushed me to a narrative video, with the actors ... to a touching story. I didn't want something static, I didn't want the action to happen in one place. But at the same time, I didn’t have the opportunity to shoot in different places. But the option of moving by car was well within the budget. Sometimes difficulties lead to the fact that the idea "shrinks" and transforms in a natural way. As always, I like to start with a simple idea, it's kind of a trick. The girl who carries a huge heart with her that keeps shrinking is for Sanchez. A doll that chooses words as she pulls straw from her wounds and eventually begins to sing transforming into Emilie Simon. An eight-year-old child driving a car with a confused man behind him. His father? We don’t know that. All roles seem to be mixed up. Sometimes this thought comes immediately. Sometimes - after a long time working with the text:

As I listened to these words and started imagining a boy driving, driving an adult he needed to take care of, I felt like I had found an idea." The director conceived a story in which he deliberately created voids in order to leave room for emotions not related to the characters in the video, and to show the beautiful acting of the actors. English is not a native language for Philippe Andrรฉ, and he always tries not to be literal in his understanding of a certain lyric and leave each viewer the right to add their own emotional coloring to it. Initially, Brian wanted the video to be filmed in Australia, but in the end the filming took place in California - it was easier for Philip.

“Brian had Sydney in his head, but I preferred Los Angeles where I was doing another project at the time. And to save time, I wanted to shoot the video right after I was done with this project. In addition, the local places were in perfect harmony with the plot in the style of a road movie. And also, it was much easier to cast in Los Angeles to find an 8-9-year-old to star ... we did it in just a week! During the casting, I reviewed fifty children and immediately chose two, Field Cate was among them. He's an incredible actor. I confidently say "actor", because at the age of 9 he attends acting courses besides school. His ability to concentrate, his ability to listen to the director is amazing! We only had a few rehearsals after which he played his part perfectly over the course of three days of filming. When Field was driving a huge American car, passers-by on the streets of Los Angeles stopped to look at him although they were already used to different filming. His car was pulled on a cable by another car from which we filmed, but the system I came up with allowed Field to turn the steering wheel in corners and at the same time be quite far from the car pulling him in front. So, he was completely in his role, and people on the sidewalks saw only a small head sticking out from behind the wheel.

Most of the scenes were written, but I wanted to leave some room for improvisation: we ended up filming - almost without permission - on the streets of Los Angeles downtown among the homeless. We got there at the last moment, shot some takes and left. It's quite difficult to do it in America where everything has to be organized, thought out in advance ... while the main idea of the video was to make everything look as simple as possible and not too “staged”. The same was true for the extras. I mixed them with ordinary people who didn't even know we were shooting. As for the role of the father, it was more of an anti-acting, and in fact it was not easy to play an adult, a bit wild, lost, who leaves the maximum space for the role of a child. At first, I wanted Ray Liotta to play but he refused in the end. I was also thinking about Robert Downey Jr who would be perfect for this role. Several very famous actors agreed, but Brian wanted someone who was not known to the general public to make the story more universal. He didn't want it to be, “Oh, yes! That video with ... ". Sometimes it's too easy. And I found a great actor in Michael Carr, who played this mutism excellently and also helped Field a lot during filming. I edited the clip in Los Angeles and sent it by the internet to London for feedback. Despite the fact that I was absolutely satisfied with the result of my work, having sent the video, I was worried and nervous. But luckily, the record label was delighted with the video, and so did Placebo. I know Brian was really touched by the video. I don’t think I’ll betray him if I quote the e-mail he sent me:

In fact, I immediately suggested making a long version, since, I think, the road movie format favors this. Plus, I shot a lot of scenes that I didn't use in the video. Placebo gave me a terrific gift: they went back to the studio to mix the 8-minute version of the song, which allowed me to finish the long version that Virgin soon included on the DVD."

๐Ÿ’š Dear friends, today we have another trip with Placebo to Dundee. Last Wednesday I reminded you why Dundee is such an important city for the band.
Today we go back in time to 2017, when Placebo played in Dundee for the second time in their history.

๐Ÿ’š In 2017, during the 20th Anniversary Tour, Placebo were looking forward to the October expedition in the UK. The second concert was scheduled for a stop in Dundee.
From this concert I found some nice videos and a beautiful Stefan's interview.
But first of all, I have to say how lucky the fans in Dundee were to be able to see Placebo in their city. Because the very next day Brian started to have serious problems with his vocal cords, which escalated so much that 7 days later the band had to cancel 4 concerts before the final performance at Brixton Academy in London.
However, the concert in Dundee, where Brian was still really full singing, was very good. Is there a Dundonian among us who experienced this event?

Photo credit: screenshots from Dundee gig, edit: by Marti

๐Ÿ’šAnd here are a few notes from Stefan's interview before the Dundee concert:
Twenty years after releasing the breakthrough single Nancy Boy, Placebo are returning to Dundee’s Caird Hall on Sunday October 8. Here bassist Stefan Olsdal tells Michael Alexander why he is hoping for a ‘pseudo-religious experience’ in a city that ‘infiltrates’ the band’s lives.
As one half of 1990’s formed alternative rock band Placebo, guitarist-bassist Stefan Olsdal is “working his way through coffees” and still catching up on sleep following the band’s recent tour of Australia when The Courier calls him in London.
But it’s the band’s relationship with Dundee that the 43-year-old Swedish born ‘Nancy Boy’ artist is reflecting on ahead of Sunday night’s gig at the Caird Hall.
The City of Discovery is the band’s second stop on its 11-date 20th anniversary UK tour.
And it’s always been a special place for androgynous-looking lead singer Brian Molko whose mum is from Dundee and who was once quoted as saying it is “where I grew up”.
“Brian doesn’t really talk too much about his childhood to be honest,” says Stefan.
“But it’s just funny how Dundee seems to infiltrate our lives.
“Our manager is from Dundee, one of our crew is from Dundee, a band that we signed a publishing deal for – The Mirror Trap – is from Dundee. I don’t know what it is. There must be something in the water in Dundee!”
Stefan has fond memories of Placebo playing the Caird Hall in 2003.
He’s also visited for a wedding and, while he hasn’t been back recently, he hopes to find the time during this trip to explore the city’s on-going physical and cultural renaissance.
Brian Molko of Placebo has strong links with Dundee
“I keep hearing about this regeneration, how the city is coming up culturally, artistically, architecturally – I’m curious to see what all the fuss is about!” he laughs. /.../ ๐Ÿ“Œ

“It is with great regret that Placebo are unable to play the upcoming shows at Portsmouth Guildhall on 16th October and Swindon Oasis on 17th October this coming week.

Brian Molko has been suffering from throat problems which has badly affected his voice. The band were reluctant to cancel dates and let the fans down and pressed ahead with the shows in Reading and Cardiff over the weekend but it was clear that Brian was struggling to sing. Brian will now see a specialist in London asap and following that diagnosis, we will make further announcements regarding the shows. In the meantime fans are asked to hold onto their tickets and await further information via the agents you bought tickets from or on Placebo and Gigsandtours social media/online.
“Placebo would like to apologise to the fans for this disappointment and hope for better news soon.”

Placebo confirmed the news on Facebook just after 1pm on the same day.
The statement read:
"Dear fans and ticketholders,
Placebo are very sorry to announce that they will be unable to play their shows at Plymouth Pavillions on Friday 20th October and Wolverhampton Civic Hall on Saturday 21st October.
Brian Molko saw a specialist ENT doctor who has confirmed that Brian is suffering from a throat problem which is affecting his vocal chords and he needs treatment and complete rest for the next few days."
Brian said: “The band and I are absolutely devastated and very sorry for the disappointment and great inconvenience caused by this unfortunate situation. We really wanted to end our UK tour on a high to give thanks to our fans for your incredible support over the years.
It’s very painful being unable to play so many shows and we are so sad to have let you all down."
The band have confirmed that with rest and the appropriate treatment they are still hoping to perform the shows at Brixton Academy on Monday 23rd and Tuesday 24th October.๐Ÿ“Œ

๐Ÿ’š My friends, I can imagine the great disappointment from the four canceled concerts, which were experienced by both the fans and the band and Brian himself.
He also had to deal with his mental state, with a feeling of failure. And the fans were forced to understand that their beloved singer is above all a human being, and that his health comes first and always in all circumstances.

The band eventually played a concert at Brixton Academy. But even there, Brian was very careful about his health.

Dear soulmates,
Today, I’m going to start telling you about two great Placebo videos directed by ๐’“๐’†́: Because I Want You, today, and Song To Say Goodbye, in my next post.

The songs are both singles from Placebo’s fifth studio album ๐Œ๐ž๐๐ฌ, Because I Want You was released as the first single in the UK and Song To Say Goodbye in other countries.
In 2006, Placebo's management asked ๐’“๐’†́ to write the scripts for both videos connected by a common idea. He wrote two scripts for Because I Want You and three for Song To Say Goodbye.

Now, I’d like to tell you a little bit about the director ๐’“๐’†́ using an excerpt of the ๐…

“Passionate about music, mostly contemporary, he dreamed of becoming a conductor. After graduating from the High School of Audiovisual Art where he studied cinematography and particularly, music for films, Philippe Andrรฉ changed his way for becoming a director. He vowed to watch two films a day for three years. Leaving school and having several documentaries done, including 'Brackets', based on texts by Samuel Beckett and William Burroughs, the young filmmaker started working at The Centre Pompidou where he collaborated with artists to create videos for their exhibitions. Later, he created logos and captions for the Planรจte Cรขble channel, then designed the visual stuff for the Paris Premiรจre TV channel.
He shot his first music video for Zazie for the song 'Larsen' followed by videos for Ann'So, Ute Lemper, Shakedown, Reminiscent Drive, Alain Chamfort and Emilie Simon. Then - thanks to the 'Under The Bridge' video for All Saints that won the Mobo Awards in 1998 - Philippe Andrรฉ embarked on a ‘British' career. The talented director was approached by such artists as Youssou N'Dour, Texas, Hooverphonic, Faithless, Roger Sanchez, Morcheeba.
Since then, the young man has worked mainly between London and Los Angeles. His first short film, The Rope, was selected for the short lists of many festivals such as the Los Angeles International Film Festival, The Big Apple New York Film Festival, and the San Francisco Independent Film Festival. The Rope won first prize at the Seattle International Film Festival.
Today, Philippe Andre lives between Paris, London, and Los Angeles.”

By the way, the cover of ๐๐ก๐ข๐ฅ๐ข๐ฉ๐ฉ๐ž ๐€๐ง๐๐ซ๐ž́’๐ฌ ๐ฐ๐ž๐›๐ฌ๐ข๐ญ๐ž represents the scene of the Song to Say Goodbye video. I think, this only fact says how much he’s proud of this incredible work he did for Placebo.

Back to the ๐๐„๐‚๐€๐”๐’๐„ ๐ˆ ๐–๐€๐๐“ ๐˜๐Ž๐” video, the shooting took place at the club ๐‘ฒ๐‘ถ๐‘ฒ๐‘ถ in Camden Town, London, on January, 24th, 2006, and a lot of real (and lucky!) Placebo fans were involved in this work. The song was played ๐Ÿ๐ข๐ฏ๐ž ๐ญ๐ข๐ฆ๐ž๐ฌ to record enough material for editing the final version of the video. After that was done, the band played a short set that included ๐‘ด๐’†๐’…
We all love “behind the scenes” shootings, don’t we, soulmates? As for Because I Want You, we can also enjoy one!
From it, we can get where Brian’s phrase "๐‘ต๐’๐’˜ ๐’†๐’—๐’†๐’“๐’š๐’ƒ๐’๐’…๐’š ๐’‰๐’‚๐’” ๐’•๐’ ๐’ˆ๐’ ๐’‰๐’๐’Ž๐’† ๐’‚๐’๐’… ๐’•๐’‚๐’Œ๐’† ๐’‚ ๐’‰๐’๐’• ๐’ƒ๐’‚๐’•๐’‰!" at the end of the video comes from. On the shooting day, some of the fans spent about ten hours nearby and at the club to be a part of the video! Brian was surely honest saying that he “๐’‚๐’…๐’Ž๐’Š๐’“๐’†๐’… ๐’•๐’‰๐’†๐’Š๐’“ ๐’…๐’†๐’…๐’Š๐’„๐’‚๐’•๐’Š๐’๐’”

We’ve also got another amazing “behind the scenes” piece - a homage video to Placebo fans created by Stefan’s (now) husband ๐‘ซ๐’‚๐’—๐’Š๐’… It perfectly shows all the variability of Placebo’s crowd and is a beautiful way to say “Thank you” to many many fans in particular. The video leaves no doubts that it was totally unforgettable experience!
Enjoy watching, dear soulmates!

You expect many things from Brian Molko, the androgynous alien sex fiend who fronts Placebo. Arrogance and sleaze. Paranoia and perversion. Mouthy soundbites and tales of hedonism strewn with the "blood and spunk" of his conquests. What you aren't quite prepared for, however, is his laugh. Half gleeful cackle and half evil snigger, it sounds like Carry On's Sid James reincarnated as a mischievous gothic imp. It sounds like a man having fun.
Lost in a big black sofa, in an East London recording studio, The Notorious Walking Tantrum Known As Brian Molko actually turns out to be engaging, intelligent company. Point out an instance of perverse nonsense in the lyrics on Placebo's new album, "Black Market Music", and, rather than spit molten venom, he smiles knowingly, raises an eyebrow, and talks about "adding to the rock myth". And then he laughs. The gleeful, contagious laugh of a man who thoroughly enjoys winding people up for a living and doesn't take himself too seriously at all.

๐Ÿ“ข “I'm very happy, it's the most accomplished record that we've done so far. It feels like a much more complex and sophisticated album musically and it's like a distillation of everything we've attempted to do in the past. As a band, we were conscious that we really wanted to make a bigger-sounding rock record and maybe have a few less slow tracks on it. More upbeat and more accessible.“

๐Ÿ“ข “Well, my lyrics are definitely getting less and less autobiographical, less like a diary and more like stories. But at the same time, I identify with all of the characters within the stories. It's just that the narrator's voice isn't always mine. I try to make the characters sympathetic and put in as much of me as possible in order to make them personal. I'm interested more in writing stories now about strange people with intense emotions.“

๐Ÿ“ข ““Peeping Tom“ is interesting. That's about voyeurism. Again, I try to place the listener inside the emotions of the voyeur himself and try to portray this character in a sympathetic manner. To show the love that he has for the person he spies on. The fact that this person is the only ray of light that exists in the voyeur's life. "Peeping Tom" is like "Burger Queen" pushed one step further. And it's quite beautiful and it's packed full of pathos and it's quite touching. It's trying to show the sympathetic side of the pervert. Because I don't believe everything is black and white when it comes to human emotion.“

๐Ÿ“ข A pervert perhaps, but like the Momus record, a tender pervert. Hahahahaha! In every reputation, there's a grain of truth, but often it's a case of your reputation preceding you, and the whole thing is blown out of proportion. Which is funny. It's all part of the rock myth, so it's OK.“

๐Ÿ“ข Yeah, I think on the album as well, "Special K" compares the rush of falling in love with the rush of coming up on drugs. There's a theme that runs through the album and that's that what people get addicted to most in life is love and drugs. And that they are often the same. People have the same reactions to both. That theme runs though our work. This idea of addiction, whether it be to people, emotions, substances or situations.“

That's our version of [legendary chanteuse] Billie Holiday's "Strange Fruit", but where Billie's walking around observing fruit [dead slaves] hanging from the trees, we've actually placed you inside the man's head. It starts off with him hanging from a tree - he's in a state of resignation. In the second verse, he gets cut down and that resignation turns into confusion. And by the third verse, that confusion has turned into anger and a lust for revenge. It's a simple moral thing, prejudice breeds prejudice and violence breeds violence. We started this band in our early 20s and now we're getting towards our 30s and you look at the world around you a bit more. And it touches you, what people are prepared to do to each other for religion, for land. Violence still exists. There's a war every day, people getting murdered every day. If you watch the news, you get affected by that.“

๐Ÿ“ข “Sure. That's true. But I was trying to make a bit more of a universal point. The things that happened in the American South, from slavery onwards, we're still feeling the repercussions of them today. The L.A. riots. There was something recently in America that made the Rodney King incident seem like "The Simpsons". So, it's just placing it in a historical context to make people think about whether or not it's still around today. And it is.“

Opening up the paper and seeing such an inventive disrespect for tradition and for the establishment was quite inspiring. I find that kind of music extremely negative, homophobic and chauvinistic. We've dealt with difficult emotional issues and intense emotions, but there's always been a strain of positively and optimism within that. Which those bands lack, really. There was this one time in Milan when I got a bit too drunk at dinner and left the restaurant which was right opposite the venue and there were some fans waiting outside, and I climbed on top of this Fiat Uno, and started screaming "Nancy Boy", doing a performance for the fans. And Levi dragged me off the Fiat Uno, as the owner was approaching and waving the keys. I thought I was going to cross this road in between the two parked tour buses and took off, and Levi just grabbed me as a car zoomed by. So it's quite possible that he did save my life. Fucking stewardess on Air Portugal said to me, "Would you like Time magazine, sir?, and on the cover was the Concorde crash! I went, "Are you nuts? Get that thing away from me!" And she took it back and just started laughing. So every time I get on an airplane, I feel like it's a confrontation with mortality. But we enjoy ourselves and enjoy life and have a lust for life and certainly we're having a good time being in Placebo at the moment. I was watching a documentary on TV about novelists trying to get their first novel published and how difficult it was and I often sit and play acoustic guitar when I watch TV. And I thought of "I wrote this novel just for you/It sounds pretentious but it's true". There's a little, I would say self-deprecation in that lyric but I often try and get to a place before my detractors. Hence the "I'm so pretentious, yes it's true" line that comes at the end of the song. It's just saying, "I know exactly what you think about me"“.

๐๐ซ๐ข๐š๐ง: Yeah, we did a song. A new song that will be on the new album, which is called Burger Queen. It's a pun on Burger King and it also means Luxembourger queen. The queer from Luxembourg. It is a very sad story. The character in this song is in the wrong place at the wrong time. It's one of the worst things to be in the wrong place. He is homosexual, he is goth, he's on heroin and he lives in Luxembourg. These are four things you can have in your life ... No. I'm not saying that being homosexual is bad. It's the worst place where you can be all of those things. It makes us cry to listen to this song and play it.

Some say it is changing a little bit, but it gets richer and richer.
