Did you know about this kind of Brianโ€™s connection to Italy?๐Ÿ˜Š

Today, I want to tell you about Placebo concert in this beautiful city of Bologna on November 23th, 2013, watch some performances together with you and enjoy a stunning photo taken by photographer Nino Saetti on that day๐Ÿ˜
To be precise, the show took place in Casalecchio di Reno, little town very close to Bologna, at the Unipol Arena (previously known as Futurshow Station).

I translated a nice โœจ๐‘๐„๐•๐ˆ๐„๐–โœจ of this concert titled โ€˜๐๐ฅ๐š๐œ๐ž๐›๐จ ๐ž๐Ÿ๐Ÿ๐ž๐œ๐ญ ๐š๐ญ ๐ญ๐ก๐ž ๐Ÿ๐ŸŽ ๐ŸŽ๐ŸŽ๐ŸŽ ๐”๐ง๐ข๐ฉ๐จ๐ฅ ๐€๐ซ๐ž๐ง๐šโ€™ that was published at ๐‘ณ๐’‚ ๐‘น๐’†๐’‘๐’–๐’ƒ๐’ƒ๐’๐’Š๐’„๐’‚ a day after the event.

Twenty years of career in one evening. An English band chose the Due Torri [*see a note down below] as the only Italian date to play and sing the most famous songs, from "Twenty years" to "Song to say goodbye", but also those taken from the last album as "Too many friends". Even if you had forgotten to take your meds, as Brian Molko asks himself in "Meds", you can count on the Placebo effect. And it works, and very well.

It's hard to be disappointed if all the songs that have made the history of the British band are in the setlist. Present, close and distant past, all the ages of Placebo are explored, twenty years of career summarized in one hundred and five minutes. From "Twenty years", in fact, the first to deserve the ovation of the ten thousand visitors of the Unipol Arena, which hosts the only Italian date, up to "Song to say goodbye". Which, contrary to what the title promises, is not a farewell but an introduction to a killing sequence that also includes "Special K" and "The bitter end" before the break. Ok, it's a shame that Molko misses the last verse on the way, but he can be forgiven. His performance is flawless characterized by the unmistakable vocal timbre. You may not like it, but in that case it makes no sense to listen to Placebo.

Among the songs from the new album, the most convincing is โ€œToo many friendsโ€ (yes, the one where Molko says her computer thinks he's gay). At this point a separate chapter opens. Perhaps itโ€™s kind of sick, as well as useless, to complain at every concert of smartphone screens stretched out to the sky. Once there were lighters, and some even were bothered by them (Noel Gallagher said "Put out those damn lighters, you're not at Elton Johnโ€™s concert"). Now, there are cellphone pixels. They are not pleasant, but there is a reason for them. Here, it is surprising that relatively few of them light up during a song that is an undisputed hit, as well as the one with the best live impact of the evening, "Every you every me". And then, on "Too many friends" coming next, in fact, they illuminate the parterre like a starry sky. Maybe the first one was the song closest to the heart of the large portion of the audience over thirty, while the next one - of the youngest. But there is a semantic short circuit in that sea of smartphones ready to post the video on Facebook just as Molko sings, in clear controversy with the social networks, "๐‘ฐ ๐’ˆ๐’๐’• ๐’•๐’๐’ ๐’Ž๐’‚๐’๐’š ๐’‡๐’“๐’Š๐’†๐’๐’…

At the end of the concert, only one doubt remains: what was the use of the net that was occasionally dropped from above to stand between the stage and the audience? If in the second part of the show it is useful for visuals with projections, in the first itโ€™s not helpful to obscure the view. Like some kind of huge mosquito net. But itโ€™s ok. And when the first Union Jack [flag of the UK] appears in the end, you think about the show that went totally smoothly, probably more than necessary, which seems to be a peace treaty made after a stormy past in Italy (the smashed guitars in Sanremo, the insults at the Heineken Jamminโ€™ Festival). Maybe, yes, Molko's grandmother comes from Bologna. A plate of tortellini makes everyone better.

The Torre degli Asinelli (97.2 meters) is the tallest leaning medieval tower in the world. It was built between 1109 and 1119 and is one of the twenty towers that have survived the centuries. The Torre degli Asinelli has a little sister, the Garisenda tower. The pair of towers is a universally recognized symbol of Bologna for both visitors and locals.

Last week, we looked at how ๐‘ซ๐’‚๐’—๐’† ๐‘ด๐’„๐‘ณ๐’†๐’‚๐’, the manager of Placebo, decided to organize the first rock festival in Bangkok, the place where he lives and which he loves.
In 2006, he succeeded and of course, planned this amazing event on the next years.
But for some reasons the festival had no sequel.
Already in 2006, the festival was organized in a very difficult political situation, which continued to deteriorate over the next two years. Due to the military coup, Dave McLean had to cancel the festival planned in 2007.
In 2008, the political situation was still very unstable and a state of emergency was established in Thailand due to ongoing anti-government demonstrations.
It was clear that Dave had to give up the festival again, and this time it was a decision forever๐Ÿ˜”.

But fortunately, there was another opportunity for the fans in Bangkok to attend Placebo concert in 2010, during their Asian tour, which began immediately after the end of the Australian tour on March 5, 2010 in Tokyo, Japan.
Brian was extremely tired and exhausted, so two days later he collapsed on stage during his performance in Osaka๐Ÿ’”.
However, he managed to miraculously recover - he deserves a huge admiration for this (I won't mention how much I want to cry every time I see a video from Osaka) - and the band were able to continue touring in Taipei, Taiwan. Through Malaysia and Singapore, we get to the performance that today's post will be about.

In 2005, ๐‘ป๐’Š๐’ˆ๐’†๐’“ ๐‘ฉ๐’†๐’†๐’“ (a brand of beer from Singapore and is produced by Heineken Asia Pacific, part of Heineken) decided to organize the first year of a cultural event called ๐“๐ˆ๐†๐„๐‘ ๐“๐‘๐€๐๐’๐‹๐€๐“๐„. It was a traveling festival that took place in one of the Asian cities every year.
The aim of this and the following years was to invite young beginning artists from the given place, who would not otherwise have much chance to assert themselves, to enroll in the given year and present their works throughout the year until the event itself. Not only musicians but also artists, photographers and filmmakers could present themselves. The goal for these young Asian artists was to reach the finals, which then took place in one of the world's most famous cities, such as London.

And it wouldn't be perfect without these two interviews Brian gave during this Asian tour:

๐Ÿ“Œ Britain's Placebo returns to Bangkok for the Tiger Translate music and art festival on Saturday
Indie spirits will get their kicks on Saturday at the third Tiger Translate, the outdoor festival where innovative arts and sovereign music clash.
The vast parking space behind the Esplanade mall will be a massive venue for artists and musicians.
Apart from graphic installations, displays and street art by local independent groups, the festival will be booming with eclectic music all night starting at 6pm.

Brian: "We're about to get on a plane from Sydney to Hong Kong, then it's over to Tokyo, and we're to play four shows in Japan.
We've just finished the Soundwave Festival in Australia, where we played to 50,000 people per show.
After the Japan shows we play in Taiwan, Singapore, Kuala Lumpur then we have a short break before flying to Latin America to play in Chile, Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, Peru and Venezuela, then back to Europe to play in a few places we've never played before, like Morocco and Kosovo!"

Brian: "We all have projects that we work on, but they're put to the side anytime Placebo is recording and touring. When you have something as successful and fulfilling as Placebo, it's difficult to say, "Let's have a three-year break." Although we have a busy schedule and it is pretty tiring at times, it is very exciting and enjoyable visiting all these countries and experiencing different cultures."

If I want to buy a car, I just can't walk in the show room and drive off - I have to pay for it. So how come anyone can download our music for free?
Luckily Placebo makes the bulk of the money from touring, and so far nobody has worked out a way of duplicating the ultimate live experience, and they never will!"

For today, I say goodbye to you and look forward to next Wednesday, which will end the Bangkok adventure with the band Placebo.
Personally, I hope in my heart that one day this whole tragic situation with the Pandemic will end and I will be able to write about new Placebo adventures - and not just those in Bangkok.

โ€The metric systemโ€ tells the story of a guy who lives in Los Angeles and sells his sperm to celebrity lesbians, so they can have children.
A strange plot, isn't it? But Brian really enjoyed working on the song. In an interview with French magazine โ€œLes Inrockuptiblesโ€ he said that it was big fun for him. "Dimitri is my buddy. We have the same sense of humour, porn makes us laugh. What is strange is that people, the media, everybody took us very seriously," he added.

On the album "๐˜—๐˜ฐ๐˜ด๐˜ช๐˜ต๐˜ช๐˜ฐ๐˜ฏ๐˜ด" you can also find another collaboration: Brian sings the Serge Gainsbourg cover "Je t'aime, moi non plus" together with Italian actress and singer Asia Argento. She later played a role in the music video of Placebo's song "This picture". It's also worth mentioning the fact that Trash Palace founder Dimitri Tikovoi is not only a close friend of Brian but also produced the band's album โ€œMedsโ€ in 2006 and several of the band's early singles.

It is the story of a guy who lives in Los Angeles and who sells his sperm to celebrity lesbians so they can have children: that's the story. โ€œEnglish summer rainโ€ was the first song that Brian started to write on a drum kit. In an interview with Rock Sound he explained it like this: โ€œI was on a real DJ Shadow trip with this one.โ€

The single was available in two different designs. The regular CD included โ€œEnglish summer rain (single version)โ€ and โ€I'll be yours (version 4am)โ€. The enhanced CD consisted of the album version, two remixes and an animated video. It was the official music clip for the song and directed by Grรจgoire Pinard. You can watch the video with the link at the beginning of this post.

โ€œEnglish summer rainโ€ was only played live from 2003 to 2005 during the โ€œSleeping with ghostsโ€ and โ€œOnce more with feelingโ€ tours. In total the song was performanced 108 times during that period.

Dear soulmates,
Iโ€™d like to listen to ๐ˆ ๐Š๐๐Ž๐– ๐˜๐Ž๐” ๐–๐€๐๐“ ๐“๐Ž ๐’๐“๐Ž๐ with you tonight. Well, I know itโ€™s not the most famous song of Placeboโ€™s catalogue. And moreover, it is a cover. But thatโ€™s exactly what makes it interesting, I guess. Placeboโ€™s choices about songs to cover reveal their peculiar taste and profound knowledge on different genres of music, pretty specific artists including less known bands.

๐Ÿ“Thatโ€™s the case with ๐Œ๐ข๐ง๐ฑ๐ฎ๐ฌ, the UK indie rock band who were active in the 90s but enjoyed a short lived career. Gavin Pearce (guitar/vocal), She Rocola (bass) and Joe Whitney (drums) released only one album ๐‘ท๐’‚๐’ƒ๐’–๐’๐’–๐’Ž in 1995 and split up shortly after.

๐Ÿ“Itโ€™s hard for me to say how much popular ๐ˆ ๐Š๐ง๐จ๐ฐ ๐˜๐จ๐ฎ ๐–๐š๐ง๐ญ ๐“๐จ ๐’๐ญ๐จ๐ฉ was back in the mid90s but, in my opinion, it might not be remembered that well 25 years after if Placebo didnโ€™t do their cover version of it.

โญ๏ธA curious fact: I found out that ๐Œ๐ข๐ง๐ฑ๐ฎ๐ฌ played live with ๐€๐‚ ๐€๐œ๐จ๐ฎ๐ฌ๐ญ๐ข๐œ๐ฌ whose frontman ๐‘ท๐’‚๐’–๐’ ๐‘ช๐’‚๐’Ž๐’‘๐’Š๐’๐’ happened to be Brianโ€™s good friend (you may remember that he helped Brian with the lyrics for Every You Every Me, and the great line โ€œThere are twenty years to goโ€ also belongs to him). However, looks like the members of Minxus, AC Acoustics and Placebo got to know each other back then. Most likely, a raw punky sound of ๐ˆ ๐Š๐ง๐จ๐ฐ ๐˜๐จ๐ฎ ๐–๐š๐ง๐ญ ๐“๐จ ๐’๐ญ๐จ๐ฉ stuck in the back of Brianโ€™s head for years and just waited for a proper timeโ€ฆ
Finally, it was released as a second song on a five-track Placebo ๐„๐ ๐๐Ÿ‘ on October 15th, 2012.

I know you want to stop
There is no return from this point on
Be glad for what you got
Maybe you won't take too long to burn
I recognize the smile
There are some things I cannot forget
It may be for a while
I'll pretend that we have never met
We have never met
We have never met
And maybe we will part
Will your paranoia keep you warm
I'll eat it from your heart
I will still enjoy to watch you fall
The credit starts too low
We take off our clothes and roll around
Boredom takes its toll
It shall be your eyes that let you down
Eyes that let you down
Eyes that let you down
You're still
You're still
You're still
Still...
I know you want to stop
I know you want to stop
Stop
You're still
You're still
You're still
Still...
You're still
You're still
You're still
Still...
I know you want to stop
Stop!

A heartfelt tribute to a world famous photographer - and a friend, since the early days of Placebo. Then, it was only five days after she passed away aged only 48.
Do you know who she was?

โœจ๐‚๐Ž๐‘๐ˆ๐๐๐„ ๐ƒ๐€๐˜ (1962 โ€“ 2010) was a British photographer whose influence on the style and perception of photography in the early 1990s and onwards has been immense. Self-taught, she became well-known for her raw, intimate and documentary-style images, which defined the 90s and specifically, the times of grunge culture.

๐Ÿ“ขSarah and Sally, the twins on the cover, run a magazine called Blag, which started in the early 90s. So weโ€™ve been in the same kind of circles since we moved to London around the age of 18. Over the years weโ€™ve been meaning to connect and hang out and see how everyoneโ€™s doing and it just never happened. So [re-shooting the album cover] was the perfect opportunity to touch base and reminisce about Corinne Day, who shot the cover and is sadly now passed away. Sometimes it feels like you have to take the time to reconnect with events that are important for you, and this certainly was an important point in our lives and a little bit for them as well. [โ€ฆ]

โœจ๐‘ช๐’๐’“๐’Š๐’๐’๐’† ๐‘ซ๐’‚๐’š entered the fashion world by chance but ended up revolutionising it: she launched Kate Mossโ€™ career and set a precedent for a new style of fashion photography.

โ–ช๏ธBorn in London on February 19th, 1962, Corinne was raised by her grandmother and left home at 16. While living in Japan in 1985, she met an Australian guy in a subway, Mark Szaszy and they never separated since. He had a keen interest in film and photography and taught her to use the camera.

โ–ช๏ธCorinne started experimenting and photographing her friends, who were models, in their everyday lives. She crossed the line and captured what was behind the luxury and the glamour that shaped their jobs. She rather focused on their poor salaries: living in dumps, struggling to pay the rent, dirt, drugs, shabby clothes and scruffy styles. She said of that time that they lived โ€œon bread and wine and spliffs.โ€ Later, it would bring out a controversial term โ€˜๐’‰๐’†๐’“๐’๐’Š๐’ ๐’„๐’‰๐’Š๐’„โ€™ as a style in fashion industry.

โ–ช๏ธCorinne Day was neither interested in the commercial side of photography nor the artificiality. For her, it was all about honesty, realism, and putting a person in a center. She found beauty in anyone and any situation, everything could be interesting for her artistic creations.

โ–ช๏ธIn November 1996, Corinne Day was diagnosed with a slow-growing brain tumour called oligoastrocytoma and had to undergo a brain surgery. The surgeon and oncologist gave her a prognosis of 8 years left to live, however Day outlived this prognosis by more than six years.

โ–ช๏ธBeing ill, Corinne returned to fashion photography and was regularly commissioned by British, Italian and Japanese Vogue amongst many others. Her work has been exhibited at the National Portrait Gallery, Victoria & Albert Museum, Tate Modern, Saatchi Gallery, The Science Museum, The Design Museum, The Photographers' Gallery, Gimpel Fils Gallery and was also included in The Andy Warhol exhibition at the Whitney Museum, New York.
Corinne Day sadly passed away on August 27th, 2010.

๐Ÿ”ธPLACEBO IN BANGKOK & DAVE MCLEAN'S OASIS DIET๐Ÿ”ธ

Dear friends, the idea for today's post came to me from two sides.

๐Ÿ”ธFirstly, I found an amazing interview that Brian gave at the Sonic Bang Festival in Bangkok in 2013 and that I will share with you next time.
The interview mentions that Placebo performed in Bangkok for the third time.
๐Ÿ”ธAnd then I read a couple of loving and very funny articles earlier this year, where Dave McLean of Riverman Management was interviewed about two sequels to his film Schemers, which are being prepared for filming.

๐Ÿ“Œโ€œThe third one is about a festival I did in Bangkok with Oasis and Franz Ferdinand, Snow Patrol, Placebo and Ian Brown of the Stone Roses on the bill.
โ€œI actually call it the Oasis diet because I lost 12 kilos while I was promoting them.
โ€œWhy is the film called Knitted Smoke?
My dad once said: โ€˜Why you doing that festival, son? Itโ€™d be easier knitting smoke!โ€™
I thought that just nailed it!"

"Years later, I met a drinks promoter in Bangkok called Cyril Legrande. He said: โ€œI really want to put on a festival. Iโ€™ll sponsor $2m providing you book Oasis.โ€
We got Oasis, Snow Patrol, Franz Ferdinand and Ian Brown. Then I got a fax:
โ€œThe sponsorship has gone down to $1m.โ€ Then another: โ€œ$500,000.โ€ The Thai promoter said: โ€œYouโ€™ll have to cut the band fees โ€“ is it absolutely necessary to have Mr Franz and Mr Ferdinand? Canโ€™t we just have one?โ€ ๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿ˜
Then he added: โ€œYou need to guarantee that Oasis turn up, or else you will have to pay their $500,000 fee.โ€
This was when Oasis were renowned for cancelling.
I woke up the next day and thought: โ€œIโ€™m going to have to sell my house.โ€
When they walked out on stage I leapt in the air with ecstasy. My girlfriend went: โ€œI never knew you liked Oasis so much โ€ฆ โ€
(Dave McLean, The Guardian Sep 2020)

๐Ÿ“Œโ€œThe gig happens, the crowd turns up, itโ€™s a big success,โ€ adds McLean. โ€œI kept going backstage to see if everythingโ€™s okay because at that time they were a bit frosty, anything could happen. So when they went on stage I jumped up and punched the air singing โ€˜you gotta roll with it!โ€™
My partner said: โ€˜I never thought you liked Oasis that much!โ€™ She never knew that Iโ€™d guaranteed ยฃ500,000 of my own money. I actually call it the Oasis diet because I lost 12 kilos in six weeks while I was promoting them.โ€

The festival was organized despite all the possible problems and the first year was really unforgettable.
A few mentions that could be found on the Internet:

๐Ÿ“Œ Held at Lakeside Muangthong Thani, an expansive carpark site situated about a 30-minute drive from the Bangkok city centre, the festival boasted a bill that read like a whoโ€™s who of British indie rock.
On the first day last Saturday, Britpop giants ๐Ž๐š๐ฌ๐ข๐ฌ headlined a bill that also included Scottish art rockers
and Belgian experimentalist outfit ๐ƒ๐ž๐ฎ๐ฌ. It was some feat pulling together such an indie treat. Day two saw art-school punks the Futureheads and Mercury Prize-nominated quartet Maximo Park sharing the bill with indie heavy hitters
๐’๐ง๐จ๐ฐ ๐๐š๐ญ๐ซ๐จ๐ฅ and ๐๐ฅ๐š๐œ๐ž๐›๐จ. Not too bad either.
Although there were some teething problems for the organisers (Riverman, Matching Entertainment and Pernod Ricard), which is understandable as it was the first time they had attempted to stage an event of this magnitude, the festival was generally very well organised. Logistical support from the Thai government was a big plus.
Headliners ๐๐ฅ๐š๐œ๐ž๐›๐จ worked hard to get the crowd going but as much as ๐๐ซ๐ข๐š๐ง ๐Œ๐จ๐ฅ๐ค๐จ tore into a nearly indie metal-sounding set, the night really belonged to Snow Patrol and their singer Gary Lightbody who sang beautifully throughout with soul and emotion.

๐Ÿ“ŒAt dusk between the crowded market stalls of Patpong, Bangkok's touristy red light district, Placebo are brandishing copies of their new album for the first time. The band are more incredulous than proud, however, as they have just handed over 100 Baht (Pounds 1.45) each to buy some illegal bootleg CDs from a street vendor.
Meds, the fifth Placebo album, is not due on shelves anywhere until next month.

"Hey, this is us! This is our new album," Brian Molko, the band's diminutive singer and guitarist, berates the Thai teenager sitting behind dozens of racks of counterfeit discs. The stallholder looks nonplussed, scrutinising the unofficial sleeve artwork, cobbled together from magazine images. Looking back in turn at Molko's mascara-lined, milky-blue eyes, the improbably tall bassist Stefan Olsdal and the lank-haired drummer Steve Hewitt, confusion turns to astonishment as he realises who his latest customers are.๐Ÿ˜
Molko might have been expected to throw a tantrum at the stall, given his reputation as the bisexual ringleader of a drug-fuelled glam-rock'n'roll circus...(...)

But, ten years on, Placebo prefer to laugh off their black- market encounter. Over drinks in a bar where bored-looking Thais in bikinis dance for sex tourists, Molko checks the spelling of his lyrics on the bogus sleevenotes. "You have to have a sense of humour about it," he chuckles, "I mean, did you see the look on the guy's face?"
Hewitt, a straight-talking Mancunian, is more forthright. "It's like someone shagging your missus, it feels that personal," he fumes.
"I've not even held the finished thing in my hand and already you can get it here. That makes me really irate."
Molko shrugs. "It's something that would have really bugged me a few years ago but now I try not to let it," he says, further confounding his reputation as a drama queen.
"What's the point of trying to stop something you can't control? When the album was leaked on the internet (there have been 26,000 illegal downloads since), I got really upset that day - you are minded to get very vengeful - but you have to move on."

Although Placebo are content to celebrate long into the night, confirmation of how much they have calmed down comes as their afterparty, fuelled by alcoholic drinks company sponsors, is suddenly hijacked by a teetotal Ian Brown.
Silencing the DJ with a show of Mancunian bravado, the former Stone Roses singer loudly protests that he has lost his favourite pair of camouflage-print sunglasses, which - after much effing and blinding and threats to strip-search everyone - turn up in a fridge. Brown switches back into amiable mode as if nothing has happened and the party goes on.
"And you were expecting me to be a diva," Molko jokes, while remaining conspicuously out of harm's way.๐Ÿ˜Š
