Today, I’m introducing you to another great photographer who worked with Placebo, ๐‘ท๐’‚๐’• ๐‘ท๐’๐’‘๐’†. Recently, he went through his many-years-long music archive and launched a project to get his photography book published. Unfortunately, it was after having some serious health issues that he came up with this idea…
But let’s start with some basic info.

๐Ÿ”ถA few years ago Pat suffered a huge stroke and although he has recovered incredibly well, he no longer has the power of speech. But one thing does still speak for him - his amazing archive.
Pat has initiated this book project on his own. Determined to show the world his best moments, he has chosen every image himself. Although his friends and family are helping with making the book a reality, Pat has argued every single point. This book is all him from beginning to end.

๐Ÿ“ข"Dear everyone,
I don’t know how many of you know this, but I’ve been ill for the last few years. I fad a huge stroke which sort of messed my life up. I now have aphasia (no speech) and one side of my body doesn’t work too well. That said, a lot of good people look after me and I haven’t lost my mind! I’ve been putting my time to good use creating a book of my music photography archive with the help of my brother.
Now we’re asking everyone to support the publication of the first issue. It’s actually a wonderful book, totally edited and created by me. There are over 150 people and bands in it. If you were into music in the 90s and onwards, you will love this record of these times. Please have a look at it and see if you can support the project – and please pass this on to anyone who can help make it a reality.
With huge appreciation,
Pat"

What you get is a first edition of a truly unique book - look at the list of contents below. You also have the option to order a unique limited edition print from a selection chosen by Pat himself. These images are not in the book, they are from the archive. However, there’s no Placebo print to choose.

In my previous posts, I’ve already talked to you about some great photographers who worked with Placebo during their career. Today, I’m going to introduce you to another one, ๐‘ฒ๐’†๐’—๐’Š๐’ ๐‘พ๐’†๐’”๐’•๐’†๐’๐’ƒ๐’†๐’“๐’ˆ.
The series of iconic Placebo photos, one of which is shared below, were taken by Kevin in London on ๐‰๐ฎ๐ง๐ž ๐Ÿ๐Ÿ—๐ญ๐ก, ๐Ÿ๐Ÿ—๐Ÿ—๐Ÿ–.

๐Ÿ’ฅThere’s a specific reason I decided to talk to you about this picture now. On ๐Œ๐š๐ฒ ๐Ÿ๐ฌ๐ญ ๐ญ๐จ ๐‰๐ฎ๐ง๐ž ๐Ÿ‘๐ŸŽ๐ญ๐ก, ๐Ÿ๐ŸŽ๐Ÿ๐Ÿ, Kevin Westenberg’s photography ๐„๐—๐‡๐ˆ๐๐ˆ๐“๐ˆ๐Ž๐ entitled ‘๐‘๐„๐ƒ๐”๐—’ runs at ๐‘จ๐’ˆ๐’๐’†̀๐’” ๐‘ฉ. shop on Marylebone High Street in London, and this photo, beautifully framed, is proudly presented to the audience๐Ÿ˜

As for his work with Placebo, the photographer recalled:
๐Ÿ“ข"In their time, one of the most exciting LIVE bands around. Not Britpop. Not RAWWWWK. Some sort of hybrid which manifests through Brian especially when he opens his mouth in interviews. That stage presence and energy radiating from these guys was infectious. This was and still may just be reflected in their fan base who are rabid in the best way possible. I was hired numerous times over the years not only by the music press but also by Hut Records and by the band themselves. The goal always was to elevate the imagery as high as possible given the budget limitations and the limitations of my own skill set from back in these days of chaos. Over the years, we didn’t always get it right due to various extenuating external events but when it worked well, It was absolutely great. Always happy with those times. This is essentially a microcosm of what my job was, creating these icon moments to have the public notice and then purchase the music. Of all the shots we took over the years, this set were for me, peak Placebo. This series were the most direct, graphic and memorable of all. This was part of the massive shoot we did for their album ‘Without You I’m Nothing’ which was a breakthrough.”

⭐️Indeed, it wasn’t Kevin Westenberg’s only photoshoot with Placebo. For example, he did a perfect job for ๐๐ฅ๐š๐œ๐ค ๐Œ๐š๐ซ๐ค๐ž๐ญ ๐Œ๐ฎ๐ฌ๐ข๐œ album and singles sleeve artwork. Also, you should remember some great pictures of ๐‘ฉ๐’“๐’Š๐’‚๐’ wearing his ‘๐’„๐’–๐’• ๐’‰๐’†๐’“๐’†’ top from the same time.

I hope it’s going to be interesting for you to learn more about the artist.
⭐️๐Š๐„๐•๐ˆ๐ ๐–๐„๐’๐“๐„๐๐๐„๐‘๐†, an American-born, London-based photographer, is renowned for his provocative, electrifying images of world-class musicians, artists. and movie stars for over 25 years. His technique of lighting, colour, and composition has helped to produce his own unique visual style. This electricity, however, has its origin in Kevin’s lifelong romance with the adventure of rock and roll.

▪️Meeting Elvis Presley on the film set of ’It Happened at the World’s Fair’ at the age of 4, ensured that Kevin would always be deeply moved by music and musicians. He grew up listening to the fabulous artists of the 60’s and 70’s as The Stones, The Who, The Beatles, Jimi Hendrix, and Bob Marley. Westenberg joined his generation in the psychedelic exploration of music, life, and light. A decade of passion and decadence helped inspire a photographic style. Architecture school brought a new dimension to his life and after 8 years, he gained a master’s degree. But British punk in the early eighties was irresistible to him and he moved to Europe. He bought his first camera in Denmark, started practicing on fashion models in Barcelona and then, moved to London where he’s been based since 1983.

▪️Westenberg is self-taught and learned his trade working for New Musical Express and Melody Maker mainly throughout the late 80’s and 90’s documenting amongst others the UK Britpop bands. The breakthrough came in 1993-1994 with the release of Sting’s Ten Summoner’s Tales and Mary J Blige’s Share My World. These two album covers changed the perception of Kevin’s work worldwide and thus began a run of 20 years of commissions and great opportunities.

▪️For the last 25 years, he created stunning photographs of Radiohead, White Stripes, Jane’s Addiction, Sting, Bjork, Nirvana, Jeff Buckley, Nine Inch Nails, The Pixies, Michael Stipe, U2, Mary J. Blige, R.E.M, Black Sabbath, Massive Attack, BB King, The Rolling Stones, PJ Harvey, Marilyn Manson, Placebo, Oasis, Tom Jones, Soundgarden, Bon Jovi and Coldplay among many others.

▪️Also included are hundreds of album, single, magazine and book covers from all over the world.

▪️Kevin has also worked with creatives from the performing arts such as David Lynch, Luc Besson, The Coen Brothers, Billy Bob Thornton, Sean Penn, Jean Luc Godard, Ethan Hawke, Nicole Kidman, Tom Stoppard, and the late Alan Rickman.

Dear friends,
The idea for this post came from my 13-year-old son.
He loves ๐๐ˆ๐‘๐•๐€๐๐€ and in his spare time he searches for various information about his favorites on Google, just as we do.
And as we all know, ๐ƒ๐€๐•๐„ ๐†๐‘๐Ž๐‡๐‹ was the drummer of Nirvana until the death of Kurt Cobain and then founded his great band Foo Fighters.
And my son came to me recently with a big smile on his face and said:
"Mom, looks like your Molko is everywhere ... ๐Ÿ˜ Can you please explain this to me?
And he showed me one of the photos - the one with Brian and Dave's tongue ...

So dear soulmates - if you don't know the history of these snapshots, now you have the opportunity to learn another piece of the mosaic of Placebo life. Here is just a part of this very long conversation that will take you to times long past - January 9, 1997.

You can read the whole interview here:

Why not get the two of them to interview each other, we thought. So we did.
The setting: Placebo's dressing room, backstage at Madison Square Garden.
David Bowie is halfway through his 50th Birthday Concert. Two of his special guests are with The Maker:
Foo Fighters' Dave Grohl who, minutes earlier, had helped Bowie perform a rousing tribal version of "Hallo Spaceboy", drumming on stage for almost the first time since Nirvana; and Placebo's Brian Molko, whose band had earlier performed a blistering opening set.
The two frontmen had met before, during last summer's round of festivals, when Dave nearly hitched a ride up to Reading in Placebo's van.
Dave looks like a Muskateer or a Fifties beat poet with his newly-grown beard; Brian looks...well, like Brian. Androgynous.
Knowing that the two musicians are massive Bowie fans, and knowing that Brian was a massive Nirvana fan and also fascinated by the whole idea of fame, I figured it'd be a good idea to have them interview each other.

๐Ÿ”ธBrian: "Tell me about the first time you met Bowie."
๐Ÿ”ธDave: "It was the day before yesterday. And he looks totally fucking amazing! He's 50 years old, he could practically be my parent. He's such a gentleman."/.../
Brian: "It's interesting that you use the word 'gentleman' to describe Bowie. We did two tours in Europe with him - Morrissey gave us our big break, he disappeared and we stood in for him - and when people ask me what he's like, I reply that he's a true, true gentleman with his feet on the ground. He speaks to you. You feel like he's genuinely interested in what you have to say.
I'll tell you about the first time I met Bowie. We'd just done a little tour of England - the biggest capacity venue we played was 300 people - and we got on a plane, we flew to Milan and we show up in this place, 8000-seater! I was quite freaked, so a lot of jack and coke went into my system before I went on. The gig wasn't that fantastic. I broke a string and threw my guitar across the stage.
So we come offstage, high on adrenalin, walk towards the dressing room...there's Bowie, standing by the door, with his arms crossed, shades on, and I'm like, 'All right, Dave. Want a cigarette?' And he's like, 'No, sorry. Just put one out.' And that's the first thing I ever said to him: 'Want a fag?' How did I feel? He really went out of his way to make us feel comfortable. He's a lovely man, and he deserves to be hugged. Constantly."

๐Ÿ”ธBrian: "Let's change tack. I'm known for wearing makeup, for my androgyny. On our bus, we have a video of Nirvana. Something I loved was seeing you and Kurt onstage wearing bras. So what I'd like to know is: when was the first time you wore women's clothing and have you ever been out in drag?"
๐Ÿ”ธDave: "I've been out in drag. When I was young, I would put on a show for the family - I was always the comedian..."
๐Ÿ”ธBrian: "With your mum's clothes? Did you have any sisters?"
๐Ÿ”ธDave: "No, I think it may have been some clothing we had in the attic, something as outlandish and ridiculous as possible..." /.../
๐Ÿ”ธBrian: "Tell me more about dressing up in women's clothing."
๐Ÿ”ธDave: "I was fortunate enough to grow up in a household where my parents were divorced, with only my mother and sister, so there was no male balance. There was no father who wanted you to be like dad, so you were left to be an individual because of course your mother didn't want you to grow up to be like your mother, and your sister didn't want you to grow up to be like your sister. That was nice."
๐Ÿ”ธBrian: "I wouldn't be the person I am now if I'd grown up with a heavy fatherly influence. My father was hardly ever there." /.../

๐Ÿ”ธDave: "Explain the correlation between theatre and rock'n'roll."
๐Ÿ”ธBrian: "Theatre taught me about emotional memory and how to become your character and build a history for it."
๐Ÿ”ธDave: "You studied that?"
๐Ÿ”ธBrian: "I have a university degree in drama."
๐Ÿ”ธDave: "You do? Then you're the perfect frontman for the band, aren't you?" (Laughs)
๐Ÿ”ธBrian: "I guess so. What that training taught me was how to open emotional doors and lose myself in something."
๐Ÿ”ธDave: "So you lose yourself when you step onstage."
๐Ÿ”ธBrian: "Yeah. I put my makeup on and that's instrumental in becoming Brian Placebo instead of becoming Brian Molko. The emotions that are in the songs become easier to express. And it's a completely emotional thing for me, it really is." /.../
"Look, I don't want you to think that what I do onstage is like a Ziggy kind of character. When I step onstage, it gives me the freedom to be the person I've always wanted to be. That's why i loved acting so much, because you could go onstage and do things that, in real life, you wouldn't be able to get away with. It was an escape.
What it does is give me the power to be as large as I always wanted to be - and I'm quite a small guy - for half an hour, an hour. It's real. It opens things up. It's not a character, it's a part of me which I can't bring out all the time. It comes out when I'm drunk, when I've been tooting, when my mind's been altered in one way or another. I'm usually quite quiet, and it's good to go to extremes..."
๐Ÿ”ธDave: "With me, there's always this guilt, stepping onstage."
๐Ÿ”ธBrian: "Really? You see, I won't go onstage wearing the same shirt. I'll wear the same trousers all day, but I won't wear the same shirt. Sometimes I'll be really quiet, but all I need to do is put my makeup on, and I'll be there. I'll do your makeup one day."
๐Ÿ”ธDave: "You should." /.../

๐Ÿ”ธDave: "When you (Brian) walk onstage, it's a celebration. A lot of the times when I walk onstage, I'm so incredibly frightened. There's guilt, there's fear. There are people out there who are standing, looking at me as if they're reaching out and will never be able to touch me. That's what scares me. Because I still believe I could make a connection if only they didn't think that about me. I want to bring down that barrier."
๐Ÿ”ธBrian: "I understand that completely, but unfortunately for you, you were the drummer with the biggest rock band in the world. I try to speak to people after shows and depending on how much I've drunk, how I react is very strange. I'll be like, 'Don't be that way. I'm a fucking human being.'" /.../

๐Ÿ”ธBrian: "When you go to the supermarket, do you get recognised? Is that why you grew a beard?"
๐Ÿ”ธDave: "No. No, not at all."
๐Ÿ”ธBrian: "I ask you that because I want to be in your position in a couple of years."
๐Ÿ”ธDave: "Well, OK. There's people who see that as threatening, there's people who see it as flattering. It's strange. If somebody comes up and says, 'Oh my God, yeah, that's you, I really love what you do', how are you going to react? Hide away in your basement, unable to cope with people telling you they like you? Fuck no.
You're going to say 'Thank you very much.' It doesn't happen that often and when it does happen you should feel happy about it...until you feel claustrophobic and surrounded by people who want to tear your hair out, freak out. That doesn't happen to me."
๐Ÿ”ธBrian: "That's kind of how I feel. I get love letters, but I also get letters from really fucked up teenagers. Sometimes the letters go, 'Thank you, cos when I listen to your records I feel like there's a friend for me out there somewhere', and sometimes it's as extreme as 'When I listen to your records, I feel like I don't have to cut myself as much as I would if I didn't.'
And that fucks with your head, because you start wondering about what sort of responsibility you have - when, in fact, you don't.
The responsibility you have is to yourself, you're expressing yourself because you need to, because you'd be depressed, an alcoholic, a junkie if you didn't. What's amazing is that things happen and you don't have very much control. /.../

๐Ÿ”ธBrian: "OK. I'll ask you one last question. When you're 33, what are you going to do next?"
๐Ÿ”ธDave: "I don't know. And you? How old are you now?"

Laughter. Dave gets up to leave.

๐Ÿ”ทBorn in France in 1962, ๐‘๐ข๐œ๐ก๐š๐ซ๐ ๐๐ž๐ฅ๐ฅ๐ข๐š has photographed the world of music since 1980.
"I turned to photography at the age of 18. There was a camera lying around at a friend’s party, I took it, I took photo after photo and when my friends saw the result, they all said, ‘Your photos are really great!’ and I told myself that was what I should do." In October 1980, during a Cure concert, Bellia decided to become a rock photographer. In 1985, Bellia settled in London and quickly began to work for the famous Melody Maker magazine. This new contribution sparked an interest from the French press and Bellia became a regular correspondent specializing in the British music scene.

⭐️"Photography is both a passionate and professional discipline. It is a means of earning money and getting closer to music. Being in the front row, blending your creativity with that of the artist you photograph…" - ๐‘๐ข๐œ๐ก๐š๐ซ๐ ๐๐ž๐ฅ๐ฅ๐ข๐š

๐Ÿ”ทAnd now, here’s the most interesting part for us: Bellia’s memories on working with Placebo.
๐Ÿ“ข๐‘๐ข๐œ๐ก๐š๐ซ๐ ๐๐ž๐ฅ๐ฅ๐ข๐š: For the first time I photographed Placebo at a concert in Paris at a venue called ร‰lysรฉe Montmartre (April 21, 1997). And there I photographed them twice. The day before in the office of Virgin, Champs-ร‰lysรฉe, Paris, and the day after in front of the concert venue, before the concert in the afternoon.

For the very first time I photographed them on the Champs-ร‰lysรฉe, in the Virgin records office. It was a very nice light through the window, and the back, in the corridor, the electric lights lit. And I figured out that I could take a photo partially of the day light and partially of the electricity. And I said: 'This is going to look…' I used an English expression that you, probably, know. It's 'arty-farty'. And I said: 'This is going to look arty-farty'. Brian thought it was so funny that it was a nickname that he gave me. And when we ever met he called me 'arty-farty' because it was so funny. Now I think we met once more in Switzerland at a festival several years ago.

๐€๐ง๐š๐ฌ๐ญ๐š๐ฌ๐ข๐ฒ๐š ๐‹๐จ๐ ๐ง๐จ๐ฏ๐š: This photo shoot with soap bubbles… Did you take this picture after your meeting with the band at ร‰lysรฉe Montmartre?
๐Ÿ“ข๐‘๐ข๐œ๐ก๐š๐ซ๐ ๐๐ž๐ฅ๐ฅ๐ข๐š: It was the second time when I met Placebo at the festival in France called Eurockรฉennes. It's a very important festival in France in July. It was 1997. Technically, I remember details about that very well. I was carrying myself some light equipment and then by accident it all fell down and stopped working on the first day. So on the second day I checked the telephone book and I checked in this regime photographers who made weddings or studio photography. I explained to one of the photographers from a rock magazine that I had this problem, and he said that the magazine had the equipment and they were really happy to help me. I used the equipment that the magazine lent for this day. I think that I knew instantly that the photography I was taking would have a very good dynamic because I could see it when I was taking the photo. And also the specific camera I used helped me making adjustments so that is why the sky was very dark at the back. I was very happy to see that the band was lit and the sky at the back was also very blue added to this dynamic of the photo ending.

๐€๐ง๐š๐ฌ๐ญ๐š๐ฌ๐ข๐ฒ๐š ๐‹๐จ๐ ๐ง๐จ๐ฏ๐š: Who made up this idea with soap bubbles?
๐Ÿ“ข๐‘๐ข๐œ๐ก๐š๐ซ๐ ๐๐ž๐ฅ๐ฅ๐ข๐š: It was for the promotion of the festival. They had to produce bottles of bubbles and they gave them for free to everyone so it was very normal, everyone did it and used them for photos.

✨๐‚๐Ž๐‘๐ˆ๐๐๐„ ๐ƒ๐€๐˜ (1962 – 2010) was a British photographer whose influence on the style and perception of photography in the early 1990s and onwards has been immense. ✨๐‘ช๐’๐’“๐’Š๐’๐’๐’† ๐‘ซ๐’‚๐’š entered the fashion world by chance but ended up revolutionising it: she launched Kate Moss’ career and set a precedent for a new style of fashion photography.

▪️Born in London on February 19th, 1962, Corinne was raised by her grandmother and left home at 16. While living in Japan in 1985, she met an Australian guy in a subway, Mark Szaszy and they never separated since. He had a keen interest in film and photography and taught her to use the camera.

▪️Corinne started experimenting and photographing her friends, who were models, in their everyday lives. She crossed the line and captured what was behind the luxury and the glamour that shaped their jobs. She rather focused on their poor salaries: living in dumps, struggling to pay the rent, dirt, drugs, shabby clothes and scruffy styles. She said of that time that they lived “on bread and wine and spliffs.” Later, it would bring out a controversial term ‘๐’‰๐’†๐’“๐’๐’Š๐’ ๐’„๐’‰๐’Š๐’„’ as a style in fashion industry.

▪️Corinne Day was neither interested in the commercial side of photography nor the artificiality. For her, it was all about honesty, realism, and putting a person in a center. She found beauty in anyone and any situation, everything could be interesting for her artistic creations.

▪️In November 1996, Corinne Day was diagnosed with a slow-growing brain tumour called oligoastrocytoma and had to undergo a brain surgery. The surgeon and oncologist gave her a prognosis of 8 years left to live, however Day outlived this prognosis by more than six years.

▪️Being ill, Corinne returned to fashion photography and was regularly commissioned by British, Italian and Japanese Vogue amongst many others. Her work has been exhibited at the National Portrait Gallery, Victoria & Albert Museum, Tate Modern, Saatchi Gallery, The Science Museum, The Design Museum, The Photographers' Gallery, Gimpel Fils Gallery and was also included in The Andy Warhol exhibition at the Whitney Museum, New York.
Corinne Day sadly passed away on August 27th, 2010.

Today, I’m back to the topic of Placebo & fashion which honestly, fascinates me a lot. I want to share an old but exceptionally beautiful and interesting ๐€๐‘๐“๐ˆ๐‚๐‹๐„ & ๐ˆ๐๐“๐„๐‘๐•๐ˆ๐„๐– that I found in French and in Russian but never in English. So, I translated it for you because I believe it’s totally worth your time!

Both of them first learned and worshiped rock through pictures, long before records. So there’s no surprise that today the singer of Placebo, Brian Molko, meets the Belgian stylist Xavier Delcour, a rising star of the fashion world. Two men in black talk to find out whether rock has a color and whether fashion has a gender.

“Garbo hat, white satin bathrobe, otter coat over a white T-shirt, large black glasses - round, rimmed in red, white foundation, black bolero jackets with gold lamรฉ and clasps, scarves, all kinds of scarves - scout-tied, tie, frill – NO MATTER what kind of, rings, jockey shirts, lace blouses, clown shirts, nail polish, concealer, junk necklaces, purple boas, mismatched socks, ultra-strict suit and tie, steel chain that looks like a garland, king size cigarettes, Indian hemp powder under the fingernails, swastikas on an armband or long necklace - this all, placed on them lightly, like a sheet on a ghost, never been specifically chosen, appeared by chance, as well as words and sounds, like so many other ornaments in which they are wrapped. There is nothing behind it. Emptiness. ANYONE CAN do the same.” Behind this almost incantatory avalanche of adjectives and details, the evil silhouette of ๐‘ป๐’‰๐’† ๐‘น๐’๐’๐’๐’Š๐’๐’ˆ ๐‘บ๐’•๐’๐’๐’†๐’” shows up as it was described by Jean-Jacques Schuhl in his book «๐‘น๐’๐’”๐’† ๐‘ท๐’๐’–๐’”๐’”๐’Š๐’†̀๐’“๐’†» in 1972. The biggest band of the rock world were indulged with their deliciously decadent dandyism in outfits, so they became an embodying of the whole era in art.

Rock doesn’t exist without fashion. It’s much more than just a question of image and look: this style nourished by illicit and fantasized marginality. Thirty years later, fashion doesn't exist without rock. There’s no fashion show without its erudite sound design created by the stars of this new genre, from Michel Gober to Frรฉdรฉric Sanchez. In this context, there’s no surprise that Brian Molko, a glamorous creature from Placebo, wanted to meet the stylist Xavier Delcour, a rising figure on the Belgian scene. Two men met briefly a few months earlier, at the end of the band’s concert in Brussels.

Thanks to men's collections sprinkled with strass jets, Delcour, 29, stood out in fashion officials five years ago. His chic punk tricks were quickly copied by his colleagues who drooled in front of the destroying elegance of the young prodigy. Pollock prints (clothes stained with drippings), visible seams with threads sticking out, leather gloves with cut fingers: his collections hit the top point and wowed Brian Molko.

In the courtyard of his favorite London pub, the fragile singer in a Vivienne Westwood T-shirt and a loose black beanie meets the designer whose walk is sharpened by his pointed shoes. For two (or almost) hours two men in black didn’t keep themselves within the chat on outfits but preferred wondering about the color of rock and the gender of fashion, the puritanism of clothes and the elegant cruelty of Fassbinder.

๐๐ซ๐ข๐š๐ง ๐Œ๐จ๐ฅ๐ค๐จ: Before the festival season, I wanted to get a henna tattoo and wax my entire body: legs, arms, so I could wear skirts and look extremely like a man-woman. I also wanted to get a tattoo on the back of my neck as a reminiscence of the guillotine and I wanted to write: "place axe here". Finally, I didn't have time. But I’ve been wearing a lot, and still wear, this T-shirt designed by Xavier, with the sentence written on the neckline "Cut here". The words are quite appropriate, as soon as I know that I provoke rather extreme reactions from people, particularly from English journalists. Many of them would like to cut my head off.

๐—๐š๐ฏ๐ข๐ž๐ซ ๐ƒ๐ž๐ฅ๐œ๐จ๐ฎ๐ซ: There was a generation inspired by art like Yves Saint Laurent. Then, there were those inspired by the street life like Vivienne Westwood and Jean-Paul Gaultier. And I belong to the first generation of rock-inspired stylists. We are all more or less of the same age. I'm 29, I grew up listening to The Smiths. These are the vibes which influenced me when I’ve been very young. What is interesting in the rock world is the fact that everything is ok. There is no problem of being gay or not gay, being too mannered or not enough, black or not... There is a sublimation of that all. It is mystery and fantasy. It's mesmerizing to watch people on stage. Brian moves very well, by the way. In rock music, as in my clothes, there is no restraint, no convention. All the freedom is there. The freedom to give a strong image because at the fashion show, as well as at the concert, it works well. While in the street, it would not.

๐๐ซ๐ข๐š๐ง: At school, I experimented a lot. It was quite the opposite to what I do today: I was wearing clothes that were way too big for me. Extremely ugly stuff, very neon, with a lot of colors. They were kidding me. In my very conservative, very American environment, it was a risk. Everyone wore sportswear and jeans. But when I was about 15, I was voted "best dressed person in school"! A paradox that made me understand the duality of emotions that I provoke in people. I became what my parents did not want me to become most. And that makes me smile. My father worked in finance, my mother was very religious. She wanted to be a ballet dancer in her youth. But she came from a very poor, very Catholic Scottish family. The youngest of nine children, she never had enough money to go to the dance school. I think I’ve got my artistic side from her, combined with the ambition that my father passed on to me. So, I was torn between money on one side and Jesus on the other. What influence did your parents have on you?

๐—๐š๐ฏ๐ข๐ž๐ซ: My father is a truck driver. My mother was a lace maker. In her youth, in the 60s, she liked fashion, tried to dress up to date. She always appreciated that I like to dress myself, to do my hair. It wasn’t that good with makeup though... My father never limited me. Sometimes he was a bit reluctant because of what others said. I grew up in Tournai, Belgium, not far from the French border, near Lille. It is a very bourgeois city. For years and years, like Brian, they laughed at me. When I was 10-11, I was called all the names. But it lasted until I was 14 when I became someone they wanted to look alike. It turned around. And now my revenge is even bigger: people wear my clothes.

๐—๐š๐ฏ๐ข๐ž๐ซ: Billy Idol. For his grimace. And I know how to do it (indeed, he raises his eyebrow and twists his mouth) ... From the age of 13, I began to find him magnificent. Cindy Lauper too, for her extreme look. For all the colours she wore. I liked her character.

๐๐ซ๐ข๐š๐ง: I had musical heroes but it was their music that interested me. It wasn't their look. My interest in fashion manifested itself from the moment I had to perform in front of an audience. When I was very young I was always taken for a girl. And at the very beginning of Placebo I was also taken for a girl. Even when I wasn't wearing makeup yet. So I thought to myself that it would be interesting to play with the preconceived ideas people have about what is masculine and feminine. And to play with this androgyny since I obviously couldn't escape it. It even happened to me to go out with people who, after half an hour of conversation, still took me for a girl! Playing in a rock band gives you a lot of freedom. After five years of Placebo we have discovered our identity. It's instinctive and spontaneous. It's not about creating a character like Bowie did for Ziggy Stardust. But rather about slightly exaggerating a real aspect of our personality on stage.

Anyway, I’d really recommend you to listen to this whole audio, it’s so lovely and funny at times! ๐“๐ซ๐ข๐ฉ๐ฅ๐ž ๐‰: It's lovely to have you here and back to Australia once again, a place you've been to many, many times, does it kinda feel like the second home to you?

๐๐ซ๐ข๐š๐ง: Well, if it was a second home it probably wouldn’t be so far away ... I think I would spend a lot more time here because I like it so much if it wasn’t such a bitch to get to. You know, I have an issue with flying, I really dislike it.

๐“๐ซ๐ข๐ฉ๐ฅ๐ž ๐‰: What do you do to calm the nerves? When you get on the 30 hours flights?

๐๐ซ๐ข๐š๐ง: Sedatives. I have to sedate myself, you know.

๐“๐ซ๐ข๐ฉ๐ฅ๐ž ๐‰: …Have you seen that Placebo audience has changed over the years as you've been coming to Australia?

๐๐ซ๐ข๐š๐ง: Yeah, you know, every time we come back there's a whole new generation of 15, 16 years old, sort of move down the front and discover the band on that recent album and then people… who were there before, on previous tours, just kind of move back a little bit further into the audience but they're still there. So it remains cross-generational.

๐“๐ซ๐ข๐ฉ๐ฅ๐ž ๐‰: Yeah, which must be exciting for you as well, to keep the energy alive to watch that...

๐๐ซ๐ข๐š๐ง: Absolutely, the fact that these guys in their mid-30s can write songs which people who are 15 years old can understand and connect with says a lot about us as people but I think it's fortuitous in a professional way, you know, for our jobs, it's kinda good.

๐“๐ซ๐ข๐ฉ๐ฅ๐ž ๐‰: Are there anything in terms of being in Australia, is there anything left on your to-do-list. Do you still come down here sort of think "I really gotta go to that wildlife park or go to see that museum or just go jumping the particular beach, is there anything left you really wanna do this time around?

๐๐ซ๐ข๐š๐ง: You know, I normally hit the beach, a lot, which is I think a lot of people are quite surprised about. As a band we are always trying to encourage the goths to get a sun tan. That's perhaps another cause we are involved.

๐“๐ซ๐ข๐ฉ๐ฅ๐ž ๐‰: Tan up goths?

๐๐ซ๐ข๐š๐ง: I remember I did a signing once in Australia, and a girl came in and she was so pale, she was definitely white. We were sitting there in our shorts, signing CDs and things like that. And I said “Hey, you know, you should really get yourself down to the beach!” And she said “But it doesn’t go with my clothes.”

๐Ÿ“ข๐‘๐จ๐›๐ข๐ง ๐…๐ซ๐š๐ง๐œ̧๐จ๐ข๐ฌ: … I met Placebo so many times that I don't remember which one was exactly the first. Apparently, I got acquainted with them on Black Sessions, on France Inter radio where they were giving a promo-show in support of the release of their first album in summer of 1997.

๐€๐‹: How many photo shoots do you have with Brian and the band?
๐Ÿ“ข๐‘๐จ๐›๐ข๐ง ๐…๐ซ๐š๐ง๐œ̧๐จ๐ข๐ฌ: There were really a lot of photo shoots. But I should specify that it includes not only complete photo shoots at studio. I often took pictures of them on stage, backstage, in breaks between interviews, here, in France, and in London… It's too difficult to divide all this into certain categories.

๐€๐‹: Can you remember the most remarkable moment of your collaboration with Placebo? What impressions do you have about your mutual work?
๐Ÿ“ข๐‘๐จ๐›๐ข๐ง ๐…๐ซ๐š๐ง๐œ̧๐จ๐ข๐ฌ: One day during their show at Wembley, Robert Smith from The Cure joined them. It was pretty amusing to see them at the after party. They turned out to be good friends. I had taken several photos with them together and Brian kept them afterwards.

๐€๐‹: What can you say about Brian's images for photo shoots? In your opinion, what was the most interesting?
๐Ÿ“ข๐‘๐จ๐›๐ข๐ง ๐…๐ซ๐š๐ง๐œ̧๐จ๐ข๐ฌ: I think it will not be a revelation but the most interesting thing in work with Brian is his androgyny which creates a special, one of a kind person. His image became a symbol for ‘90s generation.

๐€๐‹: As a photographer, what photo shoots do you like making with musicians? Portrait photo shoots at the studio or photo shoots of live shows?
๐Ÿ“ข๐‘๐จ๐›๐ข๐ง ๐…๐ซ๐š๐ง๐œ̧๐จ๐ข๐ฌ: Unfortunately, since every smartphone is equipped with a high quality camera and everybody can post pictures in real time, live show photography became less popular among professional photographers. Anyway, at live shows a photographer serves as an onlooker imprinting what is happening on stage. Portrait shoots are a different story. Only in this context a real chemistry appears between a photographer and a model. Also there is an opportunity to instantly change set (light, decorations) and anticipate a final result. For me a portrait is in the first place reciprocation.

๐€๐‹: Now the band is celebrating their Twenty's anniversary. What can you say about Brian and Stefan – now have they changed through the ages?
๐Ÿ“ข๐‘๐จ๐›๐ข๐ง ๐…๐ซ๐š๐ง๐œ̧๐จ๐ข๐ฌ: In the beginning of their career lots of people thought that Placebo was a fashion phenomenon of that period. Nevertheless, they succeed to stay afloat and develop their talent in the long-term listening to emerging trends and, at the same time, keeping their authenticity.

๐€๐‹: I saw on your website that you had taken photos of David Bowie as well. What do you think about Placebo collaboration with David Bowie?
๐Ÿ“ข๐‘๐จ๐›๐ข๐ง ๐…๐ซ๐š๐ง๐œ̧๐จ๐ข๐ฌ: It was Brian's dream came true.

The construction of the arena was initiated by Minister of Culture, Jack Lang, to maintain the rock and roll scene to Paris.

Over the years, a lot of French and international artists have played the venue including Johnny Hallyday, Jean-Jacques Goldman, Vanessa Paradis, Janet Jackson, Sigur Rรณs [one of Brian's favourite bands], Pantera, Blur, Amy Winehouse, Nightwish, Bjรถrk, just to name a few.

It was the first concert of Placebo band for this car manufacturer's brand, which preceded a series of concerts for Mercedes-Benz in 2012.
Brian was very much looking forward to this concert.
First, 2011 was a non-concert year for Placebo. The only two concerts were this one in Stuttgart and a smaller show at Huxley's Neue Welt Berlin two days earlier.
And second, he was really looking forward to another band tonight - ๐Ÿ‘๐ŸŽ ๐’๐„๐‚๐Ž๐๐ƒ๐’ ๐“๐Ž ๐Œ๐€๐‘๐’ and his friend ๐—๐—ฎ๐—ฟ๐—ฒ๐—ฑ ๐—Ÿ๐—ฒ๐˜๐—ผ.
He really wanted to enjoy this evening and please 35,000 fans who filled the beautiful square in Stuttgart.

The two rockstar bands were supported by ๐“๐ก๐ž ๐–๐จ๐ซ๐๐ฌ, a band founded in 2006 in Manchester. This band was chosen for this show by Mercedes-Benz because they actively participated for several months in the ๐— ๐—ถ๐˜…๐—ฒ๐—ฑ ๐—ง๐—ฎ๐—ฝ๐—ฒ project, a free platform for downloading music and finding newcomers from the international music scene.
By the way, the Stuttgart show was the band's first live performance outside of England.
They have this concert listed on their FB page as a top experience, and I'm not surprised.

๐“๐ก๐ž ๐–๐จ๐ซ๐๐ฌ warmed up the fans for 30 minutes to pass them on to another band, the very warm welcomed ๐—๐—ฎ๐—ฟ๐—ฒ๐—ฑ ๐—Ÿ๐—ฒ๐˜๐—ผ and his band ๐Ÿ‘๐ŸŽ ๐’๐„๐‚๐Ž๐๐ƒ๐’ ๐“๐Ž ๐Œ๐€๐‘๐’.
However, according to all the mentions that I managed to find about this concert, this show was not one of the best.
Because of the very poor sound system, Jared's band could only be enjoyed by fans standing in the first third of the auditorium.
The fans also criticized the screens being too small, on which there was not much to see from the middle of the square, and as well as the concert for Jared's too frequent speeches and his habit of inviting fans from the nearest rows to the stage or just letting fans sing long sections of his songs.
He also forbade photographers used to stay in the so-called "photographic pit" to take photos of his performance, which led to great disappointment in these ranks.
But ... according to the footage from the concert that I found on Yt, Jared also enjoyed this gig very much, he even mentioned the band Placebo several times during it and sang a small part of the song Pure Morning.
He definitely won my heart.
