In 1998 Placebo recorded a cover version of this song for the glam rock movie โ€œVelvet Goldmineโ€, in which Brian, Stefan and Steve Hewitt appeared as actors. Like in real life they embodied musicians, and allegedly Marc Bolan was the prototype for Brian's character in the film. โ€œ20th Century Boyโ€œ was also released as b-side on Placebo's 1998 single โ€œYou don't care about usโ€œ.
The original by T. Rex was a stand-alone single released in 1973. It directly entered the UK Chart at number 3 and peaked three weeks in a row at that position.

Marc Bolan was born as Mark Field in London on September 30th 1947. As already mentioned above the guitarist, singer and songwriter was the frontman of the band T. Rex and one of the pioneers of the glam rock movement. His appearance on music show Top of the Pops in March 1971 wearing glitter and satins is often cited as its beginning. The T. Rex album โ€œElectric Warriorโ€œ (also 1971) has been described as the essentiall kick-starter of the glam rock craze. From 1971 to 1973 the band was extremely popular and placed 11 singles in the UK Charts.

On September 16th 1977, two weeks before his 30th birthday, Marc died in a car crash. It's a strange fact that he never learned to drive because he feared a premature death. The car was driven by Bolan's girlfriend Gloria Jones who only suffered a broken arm in the accident she caused.
In 2020 Marc Bolan was posthumously inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Dear soulmates, it's Wednesday again. After last week's break, we continue our favorite series.
What do you think of the opening quote?
In my opinion, it goes very well with today's lullaby, which is so exceptional that I dedicated a separate post to it.

A simple text that hides the pitfalls of unfulfilled love. What better way to express the fact that someone finds your love annoying...
Who tramples your admiration like a cigarette butt...
That person knows how to cruelly kill any of your attempts to get closer with his/her a chilling sight.
Perfect verses about suffering, whether love was and ended too soon or never was, but you long for it with all your being and know you'll never have the chance.
But it is quite possible that it is also a description of dominance, not directly physical (BDSM), but rather emotional... The author describes how the object of his interest treats him and in a way he enjoys it himself...
What do you think?

Maybe it's related to Brian's trouble sleeping, insomnia is something that drives you a little crazy, and in the time between waking and short-term dreaming, all the demons you have inside of you come out.

I kneel before her,
Beneath this frozen sky
Beneath her shoulder,
Beneath her evil eye

She towers over this male who is a fly
My sci-fi lullaby

I kneel before her,
Beneath this frozen sky
I beg below her,
My limbs are paralyzed
She feels much softer
Than any kind of guy
My sci-fi lullaby

Beside her
Astride her
I die inside her
Forever
And ever
She's born to mesmer
It's sacred
Don't break it
Don't let go
Let me die

Cross my heart
And hope to die

๐Ÿ—จ๏ธ Definitely. That is the way Brian writes his lyrics sometimes. Like the song "You Don't Care About Us". That is taken from the point of view of somebody talking to Brian. As opposed to him talking to somebody else, actually somebody is asking him, 'This relationship is going wrong. You don't care about us, man.' (laughs) But other people translate it like the kids are going to the adults, 'You don't care about us!' It's weird. They are all coming from all different angles. "My Sweet Prince" was a female friend of Brian's who just they were just kind of busting up and that was the last thing she wrote on his mirror in his bathroom before they split up. It is all real, but it can be from any direction really.

As we did once with ๐ˆ๐ง๐Ÿ๐ซ๐š-๐‘๐ž๐, letโ€™s today reflect, together with you, on the reason why ๐’๐๐„๐‚๐ˆ๐€๐‹ ๐Š has been included into the most of the Never Let Me Go concert setlists so far.
Except for the fact that ๐‘ฉ๐’“๐’Š๐’‚๐’ has never understood a doubtful pleasure of experiencing the show through a small phone screen, he just finds it distracting and upsetting to not see any vivid and passionate feedback from the fans. Looking from the stage, the view of the crowd standing still to not shake their phones while recording feels definitely not the same as people dancing, clapping, screaming and singing along!

Obviously, if you start recording, you hardly ever sing โ€˜param pam pam parararamโ€™ loudly into your own phone as it might ruin the videoโ€ฆ But luckily, most fans still choose to join โ€˜๐’•๐’‰๐’† ๐’„๐’๐’๐’๐’†๐’„๐’•๐’Š๐’—๐’† ๐’†๐’–๐’‘๐’‰๐’๐’“๐’Š๐’‚โ€™ as Brian names the best of the concert experience possible.
Indeed, with ๐’๐๐„๐‚๐ˆ๐€๐‹ ๐Š, the audience ALWAYS participates especially enthusiastically.
And who could have doubted, Placebo need maximum interaction with the audience now, they need it MORE THAN EVER!๐Ÿ™Œ๐Ÿ’—

๐ŸŸฃBack to the song itself now. Letโ€™s remind ourselves the initial meaning and vibe of ๐’๐๐„๐‚๐ˆ๐€๐‹ ๐Š, melodic, punky, fuzz-drenched track about the beginning of a love affair which ends up with "weeping wounds that never heal."

๐Ÿ“ข๐๐ซ๐ข๐š๐ง ๐Œ๐จ๐ฅ๐ค๐จ: Well, Special K it's a slang name for a drug, ketamine. I took it once 10 years ago, and they gave it in the 1950s to astronauts to create the feeling of anti-gravity, and that's how it really feels.
๐Œ๐š๐ญ๐ญ๐ก๐ข๐ž๐ฎ ๐‚๐ฎ๐ฅ๐ฅ๐ž๐ซ๐จ๐ง:
Now it's an elephant anesthetic after all.
๐Ÿ“ข๐๐ซ๐ข๐š๐ง ๐Œ๐จ๐ฅ๐ค๐จ: Yeah. (laughs). And I don't recommend it. Once was really enough. But the song is also a theme that runs through a few songs on the album that compares drugs to love. And on Special K, it compares the ups, the ups on an illegal substance and the feeling that you get when you fall in love, when you have a crush. They are quite similar. But the moral of the story is that what goes up must come down.
๐Œ๐š๐ญ๐ญ๐ก๐ข๐ž๐ฎ ๐‚๐ฎ๐ฅ๐ฅ๐ž๐ซ๐จ๐ง: The descent is sometimes hard.

๐Ÿ“ข๐๐ซ๐ข๐š๐ง: "It's a nickname for a drug given to a newborn babies to prevent thrombosis," says Molko of the song's title. "It's also used to tranquilize horses, and in the 1950s, it was given to astronauts to create the feeling of anti-gravity. And that's the song's metaphor. What goes up must come down. The same is true of drugs and love. Religion, drugs and love are what most people are addicted to in the world."

๐ŸŸฃBack then already, Brian kept the lyrics wide open for interpretations.
What is still relevant, in my opinion, is a theme of no escaping the gravity in todayโ€™s crazy world. Being blind of chasing senseless goals as power and profit, should in the end bring a person (regime/society/humanity โ€“ you name it) down...

๐ŸŸฃHowever, Iโ€™d like to finish my post with a couple of quotes to make you smile๐Ÿ˜ƒ
๐Ÿ“ข๐๐ซ๐ข๐š๐ง: I think people know that the song โ€œSpecial Kโ€ refers to the name given to ketamine on the street. It has nothing to do with Corn Flakes! Some of our fans were actually waving boxes of Special K cereal at recent gigs. It was rather funny. And in our recording studio, we had a mascot, a box of Special K. I had put it there one morning, on a desk. And it stayed until the end of the recording.
๐Ÿ“ข๐’๐ญ๐ž๐ฏ๐ž ๐‡๐ž๐ฐ๐ข๐ญ๐ญ: Thanks to Special K, youth keep the line!

๐Ÿงฌ In 2018, ๐‘ผ๐‘ซ๐’Š๐’”๐’„๐’๐’—๐’†๐’“ has tried this exercise of finding the origins of Placebo. There are some very good points, as you can read in this article I'm sharing with you today.

โ—พ At first glance, the seventies have little in common with the nineties. There the debauched rock'n'roll lifestyle reigned, here the techno optimism of the early internet age. But in the nineties, rock music made a comeback. Grunge put on flannel shirts instead of spandex suits, Britpop dominated Britain. Placebo brought the two together and made the glam of yesteryear coexist with the hodgepodge that threatened to take over the pop world before the end of the second millennium.

โ—พPlacebo frontman Brian Molko never tired of describing his band as outsiders. As phraseological as it sounds, it's true: Placebo's Nancy Boys rebelled against the legginess of the rock world, talked about bisexuality and depression. "We were reacting strongly to the machismo, the fan chants and the revisionism of Britpop," Molko stressed in an interview. "We wanted to make a political statement with the clothes we wore and the make-up we put on. They succeeded: The rock world became a little more queer with the band's success.

โ—พ Placebo is the name of a fake drug - a pill that doesn't work. But Placebo is also Latin for "๐ผ ๐‘ค๐‘–๐‘™๐‘™ ๐‘๐‘™๐‘’๐‘Ž๐‘ ๐‘’" and that's exactly what Molko, Stefan Osdal and their drummers - Robert Schultzberg, Steve Hewitt and more recently Steve Forrest - did with a sound that served punk as well as pop, that could be wonderfully quiet and deafening. It's a sound that goes straight to the heart and appeals not just to the fringe. To find out who inspired it, you have to look at Placebo's musical DNA.

Given Placebo's history, it's not surprising that Placebo is an outsider in the rock world. Brian Molko and Stefan Olsdal attended an American school in Luxembourg as teenagers, far from any musical activity. Both hung out in different cliques and never spoke to each other, until they met years later on the London Underground. Molko saw that the skinny Olsdal had a guitar strapped to his back and quickly invited him to play solo.

โ—พ It was a providential meeting. Totally enthused by Molko's talent, the native Swede insisted on making common cause with the Briton. They borrowed the name of the project from one of the most bizarre outsiders in rock history. "๐ผ๐‘ก ๐‘๐‘Ž๐‘š๐‘’ ๐‘“๐‘Ÿ๐‘œ๐‘š ๐‘Ž ๐ถ๐‘Ž๐‘๐‘ก๐‘Ž๐‘–๐‘› ๐ต๐‘’๐‘’๐‘“โ„Ž๐‘’๐‘Ž๐‘Ÿ๐‘ก ๐‘™๐‘–๐‘›๐‘’," Olsdal recalls of the band's first name. "๐‘†โ„Ž๐‘’ ๐‘ข๐‘ ๐‘’๐‘‘ ๐‘š๐‘’ ๐‘™๐‘–๐‘˜๐‘’ ๐‘Ž๐‘› ๐‘Ž๐‘ โ„Ž๐‘ก๐‘Ÿ๐‘Ž๐‘ฆ โ„Ž๐‘’๐‘Ž๐‘Ÿ๐‘ก". With Placebo, the two men came up with an even catchier name. "๐‘Œ๐‘œ๐‘ข ๐‘๐‘Ž๐‘› ๐‘–๐‘š๐‘Ž๐‘”๐‘–๐‘›๐‘’ โ„Ž๐‘œ๐‘ค 40,000 ๐‘๐‘’๐‘œ๐‘๐‘™๐‘’ ๐‘ โ„Ž๐‘œ๐‘ข๐‘ก ๐‘–๐‘ก ๐‘œ๐‘ข๐‘ก...", the bassist explains. Ashtray Heart, however, is also the title of a song on the album Battle for the Sun. The lyrics clearly allude to Captain Beefheart and his Magic Band.

โ—พOutsider or not: with their first album Placebo, the trio - which included Schultzberg alongside Molko and Olsdal - was a real hit. But now the two leaders of the band are not entirely satisfied with their first work. They find much of what got them media attention at the time too pop, too punk, too adolescent. They were compared to the first post-punk generation, when the inspiration was quite different.

โ—พ"๐‘Š๐‘’ ๐‘ก๐‘Ÿ๐‘–๐‘’๐‘‘ ๐‘ก๐‘œ ๐‘ก๐‘Ž๐‘˜๐‘’ ๐‘†๐‘œ๐‘›๐‘–๐‘ ๐‘Œ๐‘œ๐‘ข๐‘กโ„Ž ๐‘Ž๐‘›๐‘‘ ๐ท๐‘’๐‘๐‘’๐‘โ„Ž๐‘’ ๐‘€๐‘œ๐‘‘๐‘’, ๐‘กโ„Ž๐‘Ÿ๐‘œ๐‘ค ๐‘กโ„Ž๐‘’๐‘š ๐‘Ž๐‘”๐‘Ž๐‘–๐‘›๐‘ ๐‘ก ๐‘กโ„Ž๐‘’ ๐‘ค๐‘Ž๐‘™๐‘™ ๐‘Ž๐‘›๐‘‘ ๐‘ ๐‘’๐‘’ ๐‘คโ„Ž๐‘Ž๐‘ก ๐‘ค๐‘œ๐‘ข๐‘™๐‘‘ ๐‘ ๐‘ก๐‘–๐‘๐‘˜," Molko recalls in an interview. American no wave here, British new wave there: clearly Placebo had absolutely nothing to do with the galloping Britpop trend, nor did they want to. But they have remained true to Depeche Mode throughout their career. In 2003, they covered the then ten-year-old song I Feel You from Depeche Mode's seminal album Songs of Faith and Devotion.

โ—พUnlike their Britpop contemporaries, who found their inspiration mainly in the sixties and seventies, Placebo either orientated themselves directly to the pulse of the present, or to the exciting early days of the British indie sound. So it's no surprise that the B-side of their 1997 single Nancy Boy contains a cover of indie heroes The Smiths, Bigmouth Strikes Again. Molko's nasally, decidedly androgynous voice seemed a perfect update to Morrissey's iodised vocal style.

โ—พLike Britpop after them, the Smiths represented a certain image of British culture with which Placebo could not and would not be associated. But in the romantic gestures of Morrissey's band and guitar genius Johnny Marr, Molko and his pals found something else: style. Few bands embodied musical and lyrical elegance as confidently as the Smiths.

โ—พSpeaking of "Bigmouth": sometimes Molko would have preferred - like Morrissey - to keep his mouth shut. About what ? Well, about his bisexuality, which also became a declaration of war in Nancy Boy. "I've always been open about my sexuality, because I was quite a go-getter in the early days of Placebo," he admits quietly. "My coming-out felt important to take a stand. Looking back a quarter of a century, it's fair to say that Molko did exactly the right thing: Placebo started a small revolution.

โ—พBut they were not alone. Suede established themselves in the late eighties and early nineties with a sound that is considered a precursor to the Britpop movement. But Suede also liked to flirt with the glam-rock aesthetic and play with his sexuality. "I'm a bisexual man who has never had a homosexual experience," frontman Brett Anderson once proclaimed. It is this phrase that would have inspired Nancy Boy.

โ—พSuede and Placebo were far from the only ones to openly embrace their fluid interpretation of male sexuality. Their master mind was David Bowie. Much has been said and written about Bowie's sexuality, not all of it positive: he is said to have had sex with minors, and there are whispers that his concessions to bisexuality were just a publicity stunt. In any case: by bringing a new image of masculinity to the stage and by transforming himself from time to time, he became a role model for entire generations.

โ—พIn 1996, Bowie invited Placebo on a joint tour and even appeared in an alternative version of the title track from their album Without You I'm Nothing. The band has repeatedly shown how much Bowie influenced them. This is particularly true of their participation in the film Velvet Goldmine, loosely based on Bowie's life.

โ—พThe band made several guest star appearances in this cult film, and can also be heard on the soundtrack. For Velvet Goldmine, they recorded a cover of T-Rex's 20th Century Boy, Marc Bolan's glam rock classic. Although the garish aesthetic of glam rock is undoubtedly one of Placebo's main influences, the band has never been content with trying to revive this short-lived genre.

โ—พThe Black Market Music album was the first time Placebo had expressed their full potential. Although Molko is upset about the poor production sound of this groundbreaking record, he cannot deny that his band has rarely sounded more coherent. In terms of content, too, Placebo were able for the first time to realise what their mastermind had in mind, weaving dense, lyrical lyrics that had no pubescent charge.

โ—พIn the song Slave to the Wage, for example, Molko describes, over Olsdal's feverish bass riff, the bleak daily reality of a 9 to 5. There is no doubt that as rock stars, a settled working life meant pure hell for the trio - at the time Steve Hewitt was still behind the gun range. As well as the distinctive guitar sound of Pavements Texas Never Whispers, which Placebo sampled for the track, the text also alludes to Bob Dylan's Maggie's Farm: '๐˜š๐˜ช๐˜ค๐˜ฌ ๐˜ข๐˜ฏ๐˜ฅ ๐˜ต๐˜ช๐˜ณ๐˜ฆ๐˜ฅ ๐˜ฐ๐˜ง ๐˜”๐˜ข๐˜จ๐˜จ๐˜ช๐˜ฆ'๐˜ด ๐˜ง๐˜ข๐˜ณ๐˜ฎ / ๐˜š๐˜ฉ๐˜ฆ'๐˜ด ๐˜ข ๐˜ฃ๐˜ช๐˜ต๐˜ค๐˜ฉ, ๐˜ธ๐˜ช๐˜ต๐˜ฉ ๐˜ฃ๐˜ณ๐˜ฐ๐˜ฌ๐˜ฆ๐˜ฏ ๐˜ข๐˜ณ๐˜ฎ๐˜ด ๐˜ต๐˜ฐ ๐˜ธ๐˜ข๐˜ท๐˜ฆ / ๐˜ ๐˜ฐ๐˜ถ๐˜ณ ๐˜ธ๐˜ฐ๐˜ณ๐˜ณ๐˜ช๐˜ฆ๐˜ด, ๐˜ข๐˜ฏ๐˜ฅ ๐˜ค๐˜ข๐˜ณ๐˜ฆ๐˜ด, ๐˜จ๐˜ฐ๐˜ฐ๐˜ฅ๐˜ฃ๐˜บ๐˜ฆ'. โ—พIt is clear that Placebo has always represented and still represents a certain attitude to life. Outsiders on the one hand, creative and full of energy on the other. ๐Ÿงฌ On the other hand, I find that the comparison with glam rock is often overemphasized despite Brian, Stefan and Steve Hewitt's constant reminders (at the time) that this musical genre was never a major influence on their music. I strongly believe that if they had never made an appearance in Velvet Goldmine, the glam image would not have stuck to Placebo so much. I may be wrong, but Placebo would never have covered 20th Cebtury Boy if not for Todd Haynes' film. Of course, David Bowie was one of the main artists to use these glam tendencies and to play them to excess, but this is not what influenced Placebo, as Brian reminded us during an interview in Paris in 1998:

๐Ÿ”ทFrom the very beginning of Placeboโ€™s career, Brian has always said that the initial purpose for him to start a band was his dream to never get a real job. ๐’๐‹๐€๐•๐„ ๐“๐Ž ๐“๐‡๐„ ๐–๐€๐†๐„ is an exact illustration of ordinary, boring way of life which Brian was trying to avoid at any price.

๐Ÿ“ข๐๐ซ๐ข๐š๐ง: The song tells you to be an individual, believe in yourself and have the courage to chase your dreams. If you do, the rewards at the end are tenfold versus doing what your parents tell you to do. Get a good job, get married, have 2.4 children, 1.2 goldfish, 3.6 cars... To a lot of people, that's the epitome of personal success. Which is why so many people get through a mid-life crisis. People reach a point in their lives and go, "Is this it?"

๐Ÿ“ข๐๐ซ๐ข๐š๐ง: The day I recorded the vocals to that track was the day that I found out that Scott Piering, the legendary plugger and our friend, had died and I was thinking about him that morning. There was a cloud that was hanging over us that day. I strangely felt his presence.

๐Ÿ“ข๐๐ซ๐ข๐š๐ง: I was just a huge fan. It comes from the B-sides album, and I just really liked this abstract guitar that was going on. It's much slower in its original state. We just looped it and sped it up really fast, at least ten times faster than the original. Again, it was sampling, which was something we had never done before. At the time, it was a great motivator for us. We didn't want to do what we'd done on the last record.

๐Ÿ“ข๐๐ซ๐ข๐š๐ง: โ€œIt's a song about chasing your dreams. It's kinda like the Robert Frost poem, "The Road Not Taken. It's, basically saying, promoting individuality and saying that you don't have to follow society's rules in order to become a personal success. It often involves a bit of risk taking and courage. But we're certainly living proof of the fact that these decisions that we made when we were very young, we're living proof embodied that the road less traveled can be incredibly fruitful, if you stay true to yourself, if you have the desire to be an individual, if you have the desire and the courage to chase your dreams. If you want to work at a bank, and that gives you a hard-on, then go work for a bank. Or, if you want to be an artist and that gives you a hard-on, be an artist. Don't feel that you have to work at a bank. And if you're prepared to make sacrifices and take risks, if you're lucky, if your karma is good, then these things will pay off in the end. Which I think it's a positive message really.โ€

The video is aesthetically inspired by the movie ๐†๐š๐ญ๐ญ๐š๐œ๐š. The story is based on the only โ€˜realโ€™ job ๐๐ซ๐ข๐š๐ง ever had. โ€œI spent a summer shredding documents once. It got so boring and mundane that I used to be late on purpose," he said to the ๐‘†๐‘ข๐‘›๐‘‘๐‘Ž๐‘ฆ ๐‘€๐‘Ž๐‘–๐‘™ (2000).
The video was directed by ๐‘ฏ๐’๐’˜๐’‚๐’“๐’… ๐‘ฎ๐’“๐’†๐’†๐’๐’‰๐’‚๐’๐’ˆ๐’‰, whoโ€™s worked with Placebo before (and would also work after).

๐Ÿ”ทThatโ€™s what ๐‘ฏ๐’๐’˜๐’‚๐’“๐’… remembers of creating the video.
๐Ÿ“ขโ€œCold, beautifully stylish near future, not sci-fi. Is it sci-fi, is it whatever? Is it a love story? I told a lot about it. If it's not the case, let's build like 'Gattaca', people, they are almost automats in the office โ€“ machine or computers but there is one girl who suddenly decidesโ€ฆ And ok, that creates a knock on catalyst effect. So it started to shred, everything shred, shred, shredโ€ฆ It was colourful, simple, and powerful. We don't say it was sexual kind of clothe coming off you love 'cause you never saw anything. ๐Ÿ”ท Knowing that ๐‘ต๐’๐’๐’‚'๐’” ๐‘ฒ๐’†๐’š approaches his creations in a philosophical way, it is very interesting to note the "meaning of life" side he has given to this sound montage. The selected sentences ask questions about loneliness and emotional dependence, learning life lessons from mistakes, but moving on regardless. ๐‘ฉ๐’“๐’Š๐’‚๐’ has often stated in interviews his insecurities and lack of self-confidence, which he compensates for on stage or transfers into his often cathartic lyrics.

๐Ÿ’ฌ I invented a character very confident, brash, yelling - that was an exaggeration of myself. A circus freak and a party freak... It is a way to stop feeling anything, to deceive my lack of confidence, the hate of myself... And also part ways with a chronic depression that follows me since adolescence. Because if I could speak through songs, I was unable to do it everyday...

๐Ÿ”ท On the subject of ๐’๐’๐’๐’†๐’๐’Š๐’๐’†๐’”๐’”, this quote from 1997 says a lot about the weight it has on ๐‘ฉ๐’“๐’Š๐’‚๐’:
๐Ÿ’ฌ I didnโ€™t envisage all this would be such hard work. You lose touch with your friends, and it has a really bad effect on relationships with people who have meant a hell of a lot to you. In fact, my job has contributed to the falling apart of the last meaningful relationship that I had, which happened quite recently. It gets very lonely, you spend a lot of time in the limelight and then - Bang ! - five minutes later you arenโ€™t.

๐Ÿ’ฌ At that time Facebook was just starting to take its first steps, and Nicolas Bazoge had no idea of the buzz the remix was creating among fans.

It was only much later, when he discovered by chance the number of views of an unofficial video of the remix on Youtube that he understood.

After several months of twists and turns, Nicolas finally met the power trio backstage at the Terra-Neuvas festival in Bobital in 2007, marking the end of a story that would remain one of the most exciting and creative moments of his early life, and Placebo, the most significant musical revelation of his adolescence.
