📍They do have a special relationship: the ingenious melancholic, this composing scientist without technology, and his guitar. They love and hate each other. He needs her, but isn’t really interested in her - at least not in the way professional guitarist usually are. Today I wanted to share with you this excerpt that caught my attention, where 𝑩𝒓𝒊𝒂𝒏 𝑴𝒐𝒍𝒌𝒐 talks frankly about how his relationship with his favorite instrument, the 𝒈𝒖𝒊𝒕𝒂𝒓, went into crisis and the reasons for that to happen. Today I'll finish to talk to you about 𝑩𝒓𝒊𝒂𝒏 𝑴𝒐𝒍𝒌𝒐's musical loves, these wonderful instruments through which he lets his inspiration and creativity flow, to then touch our hearts with his art, 🎵 - for this reason it seems important to me to talk about them -.

𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭'𝐬 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐜𝐮𝐫𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐠𝐮𝐢𝐭𝐚𝐫 𝐬𝐞𝐭𝐮𝐩?
🎤 I've got three Fender Jaguars, one Fender Jazz master and two Gibson SG's, and they're all older than me. That's very important. The Jags are all women, and they all have names: "Bitch," "Goddess" and "Tattoo". For amps I use a Marshall stack and a Fender Twin to get a fuller, richer sound. My effects setup is simple: Boss delay and Roger Mayer Voodoo Distortion; and I use the built-in overdrive on the Marshall. Occasionally our sound guy will put a Leslie [rotary speaker] effect or a big My Bloody Valentine kind of reverb effect on my guitar.

"𝑮𝒐𝒅𝒅𝒆𝒔𝒔" is a blue colored 𝑭𝒆𝒏𝒅𝒆𝒓 𝑱𝒂𝒛𝒛𝒎𝒂𝒔𝒕𝒆𝒓 with a white sparkly pickguard and a purple sticker with her name under the bridge. 𝑩𝒓𝒊𝒂𝒏 started using it from the "𝑾𝒊𝒕𝒉𝒐𝒖𝒕 𝒀𝒐𝒖 𝑰'𝒎 𝑵𝒐𝒕𝒉𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝑻𝒐𝒖𝒓" mainly to play "𝑷𝒖𝒓𝒆 𝑴𝒐𝒓𝒏𝒊𝒏𝒈", "𝑻𝒆𝒆𝒏𝒂𝒈𝒆 𝑨𝒏𝒈𝒔𝒕", "𝑳𝒂𝒅𝒚 𝑶𝒇 𝑻𝒉𝒆 𝑭𝒍𝒐𝒘𝒆𝒓𝒔" and "𝑩𝒖𝒓𝒈𝒆𝒓 𝑸𝒖𝒆𝒆𝒏"; He continued to use it until the "𝑺𝒍𝒆𝒆𝒑𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝑾𝒊𝒕𝒉 𝑮𝒉𝒐𝒔𝒕𝒔 𝑻𝒐𝒖𝒓". On September 29th, 2017, this guitar was placed among many more items in the "𝑷𝒍𝒂𝒄𝒆𝒃𝒐 𝑹𝒂𝒓𝒊𝒕𝒊𝒆𝒔 𝑨𝒖𝒄𝒕𝒊𝒐𝒏" that the band organized to end their 𝟐𝟎𝒕𝒉 𝒂𝒏𝒏𝒊𝒗𝒆𝒓𝒔𝒂𝒓𝒚 celebrations and the proceeds were donated to 𝑪.𝑨.𝑳.𝑴 (𝑻𝒉𝒆 𝑪𝒂𝒎𝒑𝒂𝒊𝒈𝒏 𝑨𝒈𝒂𝒊𝒏𝒔𝒕 𝑳𝒊𝒗𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝑴𝒊𝒔𝒆𝒓𝒂𝒃𝒍𝒚) a charity dedicated to the prevention of male suicide in the UK and to 𝑻𝒉𝒆 𝑴𝒆𝒓𝒄𝒚 𝑪𝒆𝒏𝒕𝒓𝒆, the shelter for underprivileged children in Bangkok, Thailand. As a battle mark, "𝑮𝒐𝒅𝒅𝒆𝒔𝒔" had broken the headstock.

The case of this guitar is quite interesting. For a long time I have seen on several sites dedicated to 𝑷𝒍𝒂𝒄𝒆𝒃𝒐, that when talking about "𝑻𝒂𝒕𝒕𝒐𝒐" they refer to the 𝑮𝒊𝒃𝒔𝒐𝒏 𝑺𝑮 guitar with a blue and silver sticker that 𝑩𝒓𝒊𝒂𝒏 uses to play the songs "𝑾𝒊𝒕𝒉𝒐𝒖𝒕 𝒀𝒐𝒖 𝑰'𝒎 𝑵𝒐𝒕𝒉𝒊𝒏𝒈", "𝑬𝒗𝒆𝒓𝒚 𝒀𝒐𝒖 𝑬𝒗𝒆𝒓𝒚 𝑴𝒆", "𝑺𝒑𝒆𝒄𝒊𝒂𝒍 𝑵𝒆𝒆𝒅𝒔", etc; However, while I was preparing this post I came across a forum where a guy said that the red colored 𝑭𝒆𝒏𝒅𝒆𝒓 𝑱𝒂𝒈𝒖𝒂𝒓 with tortoiseshell pickguard is the guitar named "𝑻𝒂𝒕𝒕𝒐𝒐" and that it was also 𝑩𝒓𝒊𝒂𝒏's second favorite and the sexiest one. Looking at the quote that opens this post, we realize that it is true: 𝑩𝒓𝒊𝒂𝒏 𝑴𝒐𝒍𝒌𝒐 𝒉𝒊𝒎𝒔𝒆𝒍𝒇 𝒔𝒂𝒚𝒔 𝒕𝒉𝒂𝒕 "𝑻𝒂𝒕𝒕𝒐𝒐" 𝒊𝒔 𝒂𝒄𝒕𝒖𝒂𝒍𝒍𝒚 𝒂 𝑭𝒆𝒏𝒅𝒆𝒓 𝑱𝒂𝒈𝒖𝒂𝒓 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝑵𝑶𝑻 𝒂 𝑮𝒊𝒃𝒔𝒐𝒏 𝑺𝑮, as has always been rumored.

𝑩𝒓𝒊𝒂𝒏 mainly used this guitar to play songs from 𝑷𝒍𝒂𝒄𝒆𝒃𝒐's first album and he only used it during their first tour. As you well know, in the gigs 𝑩𝒓𝒊𝒂𝒏 𝑴𝒐𝒍𝒌𝒐 always changes guitars between songs, but there are exceptions, such as their performance at the 𝑳𝒐𝒓𝒆𝒍𝒆𝒚 𝑭𝒆𝒔𝒕𝒊𝒗𝒂𝒍 in 1996 where he played the whole concert with "𝑻𝒂𝒕𝒕𝒐𝒐".

"𝑳𝒐𝒖𝒊𝒔𝒆" is another 𝑭𝒆𝒏𝒅𝒆𝒓 𝑱𝒂𝒈𝒖𝒂𝒓 guitar named after the sticker between the pickups of the American silent film star and writer 𝑳𝒐𝒖𝒊𝒔𝒆 𝑩𝒓𝒐𝒐𝒌𝒔, whose androgynous image created aesthetic trends, scandalized with her roles and her bold and rebellious behavior during the 20s, just as 𝑷𝒍𝒂𝒄𝒆𝒃𝒐 did in the 90s! It is even curious that the press back then compared 𝑩𝒓𝒊𝒂𝒏 𝑴𝒐𝒍𝒌𝒐's hairstyle with 𝑳𝒐𝒖𝒊𝒔𝒆 𝑩𝒓𝒐𝒐𝒌𝒔' iconic haircut, as you can see in the excerpt below:

Last December 4th 𝑩𝒓𝒊𝒂𝒏 offered this guitar as a prize draw to people who donated funds to help 𝑺𝒕𝒂𝒈𝒆𝒉𝒂𝒏𝒅 and 𝑷𝒍𝒂𝒄𝒆𝒃𝒐's own crew for #ILoveLive month. "𝑳𝒐𝒐𝒌𝒔 𝒂𝒘𝒇𝒖𝒍 - 𝒔𝒐𝒖𝒏𝒅𝒔 𝒃𝒆𝒕𝒕𝒆𝒓!" said about the guitar on the band's official social media.

𝐁𝐫𝐢𝐚𝐧: [...] The last one I named is called Franny, it's a guitar from 1957, and I don’t know if this is correct, but I think that whoever owned it before must have had his guitar in the room while he was sleeping with a groupie, and this groupie sort of scratched her name on the back of the guitar, and because it says Franny on the back, you know, so she's called Franny. The other ones they haven’t names.

"𝑭𝒓𝒂𝒏𝒏𝒚" is the only guitar 𝑩𝒓𝒊𝒂𝒏 used at the extraordinary 𝑷𝒍𝒂𝒄𝒆𝒃𝒐 concert at 𝑨𝒏𝒈𝒌𝒐𝒓 𝑾𝒂𝒕 on the songs "𝑴𝒆𝒅𝒔","𝑩𝒆𝒄𝒂𝒖𝒔𝒆 𝑰 𝑾𝒂𝒏𝒕 𝒀𝒐𝒖", "𝑭𝒐𝒍𝒍𝒐𝒘 𝑻𝒉𝒆 𝑪𝒐𝒑𝒔 𝑩𝒂𝒄𝒌 𝑯𝒐𝒎𝒆", "𝑷𝒐𝒔𝒕 𝑩𝒍𝒖𝒆", "𝑩𝒍𝒊𝒏𝒅","𝑫𝒓𝒂𝒈" and "𝑻𝒘𝒆𝒏𝒕𝒚 𝒀𝒆𝒂𝒓𝒔".

Today I will talk to you about this peculiar 𝑩𝒓𝒊𝒂𝒏 𝑴𝒐𝒍𝒌𝒐's instrument, his lovely gay guitar called "𝑩𝒆𝒓𝒕𝒊𝒆", a pink 𝑮𝒊𝒃𝒔𝒐𝒏 𝑺𝑮-𝑿 that he used mainly to play the song "𝑻𝒉𝒆 𝑩𝒊𝒕𝒕𝒆𝒓 𝑬𝒏𝒅".

But sadly, just like the song, "𝑩𝒆𝒓𝒕𝒊𝒆" had a bitter end, since after 𝑩𝒓𝒊𝒂𝒏 used it in some TV shows and concerts of the "𝑺𝒍𝒆𝒆𝒑𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝑾𝒊𝒕𝒉 𝑮𝒉𝒐𝒔𝒕𝒔 𝑻𝒐𝒖𝒓" in 2003, everything suggests that 𝑺𝒕𝒆𝒇𝒂𝒏 𝑶𝒍𝒔𝒅𝒂𝒍 accidentally broke it, as 𝑩𝒓𝒊𝒂𝒏 revealed in an interview for a local TV channel in 𝑴𝒆𝒙𝒊𝒄𝒐, while he was talking about his guitars:

Just a short while ago one was destroyed in Paris, cause our lovely bassist Stefan hit my guitar with his bass - it simply broke into pieces, it was quite funny. Stefan is on stage at the moment a bit brutal towards me. All the time he is knocking me over or bump into me. I guess he has an unconscious antipathy against me - NO, that were just accidents. We are simply a bit more wild than in the past.

What a pity that "𝑩𝒆𝒓𝒕𝒊𝒆" couldn't recover from that accident. 💔 The good thing is that, thanks to technology, some of the astounding performances where 𝑩𝒓𝒊𝒂𝒏 𝑴𝒐𝒍𝒌𝒐 used this guitar were immortalized and, to your delight, I have made a list of them, enjoy watching and listening dear soulmates! 🎸🔥🎶

That's right dear soulmates, my post today is dedicated to "𝑩𝒊𝒕𝒄𝒉", 𝑩𝒓𝒊𝒂𝒏 𝑴𝒐𝒍𝒌𝒐's favorite guitar, a beautiful red-colored 𝑭𝒆𝒏𝒅𝒆𝒓 𝑱𝒂𝒈𝒖𝒂𝒓 that like all 𝑩𝒓𝒊𝒂𝒏's guitars is female and older than him. This instrument is very important within 𝑷𝒍𝒂𝒄𝒆𝒃𝒐 and deserves a special mention. To begin with, 𝒘𝒉𝒚 𝒊𝒔 𝒕𝒉𝒊𝒔 𝒈𝒖𝒊𝒕𝒂𝒓 𝒔𝒐 𝒔𝒑𝒆𝒄𝒊𝒂𝒍 𝒕𝒐 𝑩𝒓𝒊𝒂𝒏? These are his reasons:

🎙️"I always wanted one," he says. "Because they were Sonic Youth guitars".

As a performer. I have to place myself in an incredibly vulnerable position - I stand on stage and bleed my heart out to 2,000 strangers and I have to reap the consequences of that afterwards, whether they're good or bad. And it's fine, because if that's what I have to do for the music to be as honest as possible, then that's what I have to do.
The qualities which I attach to Placebo's music - honesty, vulnerability, fragility and humanity - are the qualities which attract people to us, because we're not hiding behind any macho posturings of rock or hiding behind irony and things like that.
I'd like to think of Placebo's music as being very real."

Well, although in the last two albums "𝑩𝒂𝒕𝒕𝒍𝒆 𝑭𝒐𝒓 𝑻𝒉𝒆 𝑺𝒖𝒏" (2009) and "𝑳𝒐𝒖𝒅 𝑳𝒊𝒌𝒆 𝑳𝒐𝒗𝒆" (2013) 𝑩𝒓𝒊𝒂𝒏 𝑴𝒐𝒍𝒌𝒐 has used more other kinds of guitars, as we saw in the quote above, it is essential that he continues to use 𝑭𝒆𝒏𝒅𝒆𝒓 guitars to perform several 𝑷𝒍𝒂𝒄𝒆𝒃𝒐 songs.
