📍𝑩𝒓𝒊𝒂𝒏 𝑴𝒐𝒍𝒌𝒐 has been up since 5am doing interview after interview after interview. He has appeared on the 𝑪𝒉𝒂𝒏𝒏𝒆𝒍 𝟒 breakfast programme, 𝑹𝑰:𝑺𝑬 and has had fifteen different journalists sit before him in a row, most likely repeating the same questions. In less than 24 hours he has two live performances; one on 𝑻𝒐𝒑 𝒐𝒇 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝑷𝒐𝒑𝒔 and the other on the 𝑱𝒐𝒏𝒂𝒕𝒉𝒂𝒏 𝑹𝒐𝒔𝒔 𝑺𝒉𝒐𝒘.

So, you can imagine my trepidation at being the last journo to interview 𝑩𝒓𝒊𝒂𝒏 after such a long and boring day. I presumed he would be cranky and disinterested in my questions, and with good reason. However, 𝑩𝒓𝒊𝒂𝒏 is disarmingly friendly and charming, chatting in an open and informal way to me. He always makes eye contact when talking and his grey/blue eyes are exceptionally captivating. The man looks unfairly good considering he has been up for a long time. So, what must it be like sitting through constant interviews and being expected to be pleasant all day?

𝑷𝒍𝒂𝒄𝒆𝒃𝒐 have bounced back into the limelight with their fourth album, ‘𝑺𝒍𝒆𝒆𝒑𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝑾𝒊𝒕𝒉 𝑮𝒉𝒐𝒔𝒕𝒔’ which was produced by 𝑱𝒊𝒎 𝑨𝒃𝒃𝒊𝒔𝒔, who has worked with both 𝑫𝑱 𝑺𝒉𝒂𝒅𝒐𝒘 and 𝑼𝑵𝑲𝑳𝑬 respectively. With this in mind you can expect an album full of different flavours and experimentation, from the beautiful 𝑷𝒊𝒏𝒌 𝑭𝒍𝒐𝒚𝒅-𝒆𝒔𝒒𝒖𝒆 ballad, ‘𝑺𝒑𝒆𝒄𝒊𝒂𝒍 𝑵𝒆𝒆𝒅𝒔’ to electroclash inspired ‘𝑬𝒏𝒈𝒍𝒊𝒔𝒉 𝑺𝒖𝒎𝒎𝒆𝒓 𝑹𝒂𝒊𝒏’.

Which is an excellent way to describe ‘𝑺𝒍𝒆𝒆𝒑𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝑾𝒊𝒕𝒉 𝑮𝒉𝒐𝒔𝒕𝒔’ with its deep and personal lyrics. The title track includes the epitaph-like line “𝒔𝒐𝒖𝒍𝒎𝒂𝒕𝒆𝒔 𝒏𝒆𝒗𝒆𝒓 𝒅𝒊𝒆”, which tells the story of true soulmates meeting in different lifetimes. ‘𝑺𝒆𝒄𝒐𝒏𝒅 𝑺𝒊𝒈𝒉𝒕’ is on the other end of the emotional scale, portraying the morning after a one night stand when one person wants more: “𝒘𝒂𝒍𝒌 𝒂𝒘𝒂𝒚 𝒕𝒐 𝒔𝒂𝒗𝒆 𝒚𝒐𝒖𝒓 𝒇𝒂𝒄𝒆 / 𝒚𝒐𝒖 𝒏𝒆𝒗𝒆𝒓 𝒘𝒆𝒓𝒆 𝒂 𝒈𝒆𝒏𝒊𝒖𝒔”. One can only imagine that there must be a plus side to airing your dirty laundry in public.

Recently, 𝑷𝒍𝒂𝒄𝒆𝒃𝒐 completed a few warm-up shows in smaller venues than they usually play, airing the new material before the big 𝑬𝒖𝒓𝒐𝒑𝒆𝒂𝒏 tour in April. Each gig was warmly received and 𝑩𝒓𝒊𝒂𝒏, 𝑺𝒕𝒆𝒇𝒂𝒏 and 𝑺𝒕𝒆𝒗𝒆 looked the happiest and relaxed they had in a long time. Is this heralding a new dawn for 𝑷𝒍𝒂𝒄𝒆𝒃𝒐 – being as content as 𝑩𝒊𝒍𝒍𝒚 𝑪𝒐𝒓𝒈𝒂𝒏 but without the band change?

It is quite hard to believe that the articulate and sensible man sitting opposite me had a name for being a difficult interviewee and once left “𝒂 𝒕𝒓𝒂𝒊𝒍 𝒐𝒇 𝒃𝒍𝒐𝒐𝒅 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝒔𝒑𝒖𝒏𝒌 𝒂𝒄𝒓𝒐𝒔𝒔 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒄𝒐𝒖𝒏𝒕𝒓𝒚” in 1998 (“𝑨 𝒒𝒖𝒐𝒕𝒆 𝒕𝒉𝒂𝒕 𝒘𝒊𝒍𝒍 𝒇𝒐𝒍𝒍𝒐𝒘 𝒎𝒆 𝒕𝒐 𝒎𝒚 𝒈𝒓𝒂𝒗𝒆”). 𝑷𝒍𝒂𝒄𝒆𝒃𝒐 really did have quite a reputation for drugs, sex and general misbehaviour, 𝑩𝒓𝒊𝒂𝒏 often described as a ‘𝒅𝒓𝒖𝒈-𝒄𝒓𝒂𝒛𝒆𝒅 𝒔𝒆𝒙 𝒅𝒘𝒂𝒓𝒇’. Was this an unfair portrayal or an accurate summary of that time?

𝑷𝒍𝒂𝒄𝒆𝒃𝒐 certainly seem a lot more chilled out now, they don’t seem to be in a rush to try everything, experience everything. Maybe, because there’s not much left for them to experience now except settling down and continuing to enjoy their music.

It would appear that a more mature 𝑷𝒍𝒂𝒄𝒆𝒃𝒐 has emerged from the gritty leftovers of the 90s. ‘𝑺𝒍𝒆𝒆𝒑𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝑾𝒊𝒕𝒉 𝑮𝒉𝒐𝒔𝒕𝒔’ serves to represent that, justifying everything 𝑩𝒓𝒊𝒂𝒏 has said. 𝑩𝒓𝒊𝒂𝒏, himself, has proved to be an honest and thoughtful person, thinking each question I ask over thoroughly to give me the best answer he can, often exploring himself through the question. So, 𝑩𝒓𝒊𝒂𝒏 and the rest of the band, the hard work done, must be ready to sit back and watch the album do its thing.

With this in mind, 𝑩𝒓𝒊𝒂𝒏 can now go and relax with a well earned drink, safe in the knowledge that 𝑷𝒍𝒂𝒄𝒆𝒃𝒐 have achieved No. 12 in the 𝑼𝑲 𝑻𝒐𝒑 40 and, bizarrely, No.1 in the 𝑷𝒐𝒓𝒕𝒖𝒈𝒖𝒆𝒔𝒆 charts, with their first single from the new album, ‘𝑻𝒉𝒆 𝑩𝒊𝒕𝒕𝒆𝒓 𝑬𝒏𝒅’.

⭐𝘋𝘦𝘢𝘳 𝘴𝘰𝘶𝘭𝘮𝘢𝘵𝘦𝘴, this afternoon I wanted to take you back to the time of 𝑷𝒍𝒂𝒄𝒆𝒃𝒐's "𝑺𝒍𝒆𝒆𝒑𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝑾𝒊𝒕𝒉 𝑮𝒉𝒐𝒔𝒕𝒔" album with this great interview where 𝑩𝒓𝒊𝒂𝒏 𝑴𝒐𝒍𝒌𝒐 talks about his creative songwriting process - which I don't know about you guys, but I enjoy a lot when 𝑩𝒓𝒊𝒂𝒏 talks about how these beautiful songs were born - and also he reflects on the band's crazy past and how they became a more mature band. Today's post is dedicated to "𝐃𝐑𝐈𝐍𝐊 𝐘𝐎𝐔 𝐏𝐑𝐄𝐓𝐓𝐘" because I think it's an underrated but a brilliant 𝑷𝒍𝒂𝒄𝒆𝒃𝒐 song, which was released as a 𝑩-𝒔𝒊𝒅𝒆 on the single "𝑻𝒉𝒆 𝑩𝒊𝒕𝒕𝒆𝒓 𝑬𝒏𝒅"" on March 10, 2003, years later was included on the unofficial compilation "𝑷𝒍𝒂𝒄𝒆𝒃𝒐 𝑩-𝑺𝒊𝒅𝒆𝒔: 𝟏𝟗𝟗𝟔 - 𝟐𝟎𝟎𝟔" on March 7, 2011 and finally, appeared on the digital compilation "𝑺𝒍𝒆𝒆𝒑𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝑾𝒊𝒕𝒉 𝑮𝒉𝒐𝒔𝒕𝒔 𝑩-𝑺𝒊𝒅𝒆𝒔" released on February 19, 2016.

🎵"𝑫𝒓𝒊𝒏𝒌 𝒀𝒐𝒖 𝑷𝒓𝒆𝒕𝒕𝒚" was engineered by 𝑱𝒂𝒎𝒆𝒔 𝑩𝒓𝒐𝒘𝒏, mixed by 𝑫𝒊𝒎𝒊𝒕𝒓𝒊 𝑻𝒊𝒌𝒐𝒗𝒐𝒊 along with 𝑱𝒂𝒎𝒆𝒔 𝑩𝒓𝒐𝒘𝒏 and produced by 𝑫𝒊𝒎𝒊𝒕𝒓𝒊 𝑻𝒊𝒌𝒐𝒗𝒐𝒊.

As soon as you listen to the melody you can tell that this is one of 𝑷𝒍𝒂𝒄𝒆𝒃𝒐's most melancholic songs. According to the 𝑼𝒓𝒃𝒂𝒏 𝑫𝒊𝒄𝒕𝒊𝒐𝒏𝒂𝒓𝒚, '𝒕𝒐 𝒅𝒓𝒊𝒏𝒌 𝒉𝒊𝒎 (𝒚𝒐𝒖) 𝒑𝒓𝒆𝒕𝒕𝒚' is a southern colloquial phrase that means "𝒕𝒐 𝒈𝒆𝒕 𝒅𝒓𝒖𝒏𝒌 𝒕𝒐 𝒔𝒆𝒆 𝒕𝒉𝒊𝒏𝒈𝒔 𝒊𝒏 𝒂 𝒃𝒆𝒕𝒕𝒆𝒓 𝒘𝒂𝒚", so in conclusion, the character of the song prefers to be lied to rather than to see the harsh reality.

🎤 Another interesting thing in "𝑫𝒓𝒊𝒏𝒌 𝒀𝒐𝒖 𝑷𝒓𝒆𝒕𝒕𝒚" is the contrast of 𝑩𝒓𝒊𝒂𝒏 𝑴𝒐𝒍𝒌𝒐's voice, since he recites the verses with a deeper tone and even his voice sounds a bit distorted while on the other hand, he sings the chorus with a more melodic tone.

We all already know the deep professional and spiritual bond between Placebo and their guiding light David Bowie, but what I'm going to talk about in this post today is a further link between our favourite band and the White Duke, exactly through George Orwell's dystopian novel '1984' which maybe not all of us know yet.

What I am going to talk about today is David Bowie's record 'Diamond Dogs'! 💥

💦𝐀𝐁𝐎𝐔𝐓 '𝐃𝐈𝐀𝐌𝐎𝐍𝐃 𝐃𝐎𝐆𝐒' – 𝐓𝐇𝐄 𝐀𝐋𝐁𝐔𝐌💦
Diamond Dogs is the eighth studio album by David Bowie, released on May 24th 1974 through RCA Records. It was recorded it in early 1974 in London and in Netherlands, following the disbanding of Bowie's backing band the Spiders from Mars. The absence of Mick Ronson led Bowie to play guitar on the record. Musically, it was Bowie's final album in the glam rock genre.
Belgian artist Guy Peellaert painted the controversial cover artwork depicting Bowie as a half-man, half-dog hybrid, based on photos taken by photographer Terry O'Neill.
Conceived during a period of uncertainty over where his career was headed, Diamond Dogs is the result of multiple projects Bowie envisioned at the time. One of these was a musical based on Ziggy Stardust (1972), which he ultimately scrapped, another was 𝐚𝐧 𝐚𝐝𝐚𝐩𝐭𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐨𝐟 𝐆𝐞𝐨𝐫𝐠𝐞 𝐎𝐫𝐰𝐞𝐥𝐥'𝐬 𝟏𝟗𝟒𝟗 𝐧𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐥 '𝟏𝟗𝟖𝟒'.
Preceded by the lead single "Rebel Rebel", Diamond Dogs was a commercial success, peaking at number one in the UK and number five in the US.
Bowie biographers consider it one of his best works and, in 2013, NME ranked it one of the greatest albums of all time. Diamond Dogs has been cited as an influence on the punk revolution in the years following its release.

Diamond Dogs contains several references to George Orwell's classic 𝐝𝐲𝐬𝐭𝐨𝐩𝐢𝐚𝐧* science fiction story '1984' (most notably in the final third of the album, which directly quoted Orwell multiple times: 1984, Big Brother and We Are The Dead), but originally, the relation between Bowie's album and Orwell's novel was supposed to be much closer.

When Bowie started working on the material that would become Diamond Dogs, he initially intended for it to be a musical adaptation of 1984; unfortunately, negotiations between the musician and Orwell's estate eventually fell through, and the estate refused to sell Bowie the rights.
According to an excerpt from "The Man Who Sold the World: David Bowie and the 1970s", the Widow Orwell refused the rights on the grounds that she had no intention of allowing '1984' to be turned into a musical.
David Bowie's reaction was not long in coming, and the words he used for the Orwell's widow were quite sharp:

It really was like that.
Not that Bowie was given singular treatment: so protective was Sonia Orwell of her late husband’s legacy, and so appalled had she been by a 1955 film adaptation, that she had turned down everyone who approached her wishing to translate Nineteen Eighty-Four into another medium.


What form that musical was ultimately meant to take isn’t totally clear. According to Christopher Sandford’s biography 'Bowie: Loving the Alien', the adaptation would've been “a West End musical, with an accompanying album and film.”
But in a Rolling Stone interview with William S. Burroughs from February 1974—just months before the release of Diamond Dogs—Bowie himself mentioned he was “doing Orwell’s '1984' on television.”
Though Sonia Orwell passed away in 1980, Bowie never resurrected his original plans for her husband’s harrowing tale.
But in January 2020, producers at Australia’s New Theatre did stage a 1984 musical that Sonia surely would have disapproved of.

‘1984’ was written as the title track for David Bowie’s proposed theatrical version of George Orwell’s novel Nineteen Eighty-Four.
During a day’s filming at the Marquee on 20 October 1973, Bowie introduced ‘1984’ with the words: “𝑊𝑒’𝑣𝑒 𝑤𝑟𝑖𝑡𝑡𝑒𝑛 𝑎 𝑚𝑢𝑠𝑖𝑐𝑎𝑙, 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝑡ℎ𝑖𝑠 𝑖𝑠 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑡𝑖𝑡𝑙𝑒 𝑠𝑜𝑛𝑔 𝑐𝑎𝑙𝑙𝑒𝑑 ‘1984’. 𝑊𝑒’𝑙𝑙 𝑏𝑒 𝑑𝑜𝑖𝑛𝑔 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑠ℎ𝑜𝑤 𝑖𝑛 𝑀𝑎𝑟𝑐ℎ 𝑛𝑒𝑥𝑡 𝑦𝑒𝑎𝑟.”
The song pays worthy homage to the book. Despite his glam plumage, Bowie could do dreary nihilism with the best of them. “1984” maintains the novel’s oppressive weight, honing in on Orwell’s depiction of thought control, specifically the state-issued propaganda which makes intellectual amputees of its citizens.

The link between David Bowie and George Orwell is also represented by the song 'Big Brother', the penultimate song on Diamond Dogs.
It takes up the 'Big Brother' of the Orwellian novel, a very popular dictator who constantly observes the actions of men and keeps them under control. Actually, Orwell never specifies whether he is a human being or simply a symbol, but in the collective imagination he represents a constant presence that always monitors. It is a figure that is very much quoted in television, in the world of cinema, etc.
The lyrics of ‘Big Brother’ reflect the moment in Orwell’s book when its protagonist Winston Smith’s brainwashing was complete, and he became fully supplicant towards the state.

Bowie had been using cocaine since the tail end of the Ziggy Stardust tour, and at the start of 1974 was descending into an increasingly severe habit.

Traditionally, on this day, we talk a lot about one of the most iconic songs, 𝐓𝐇𝐄 𝐁𝐈𝐓𝐓𝐄𝐑 𝐄𝐍𝐃. Super powerful and energetic, it was destined to become a concert anthem and a long-lasting fans’ favourite. And it DID become!!
So, in my today’s post, I’d like to highlight a great 𝒍𝒊𝒗𝒆 𝒉𝒊𝒔𝒕𝒐𝒓𝒚 of this exceptional track.

⭐️With 𝟔𝟖𝟔 confirmed performances to date, 𝐓𝐇𝐄 𝐁𝐈𝐓𝐓𝐄𝐑 𝐄𝐍𝐃 is the third most often played Placebo song. It was included into the setlist EVERY YEAR since 2003 till 2018, excerpt for the year 2008 when Placebo didn’t tour but only played a historic concert at Angkor Wat.

⭐️For the first time, 𝐓𝐇𝐄 𝐁𝐈𝐓𝐓𝐄𝐑 𝐄𝐍𝐃 was played on 𝐌𝐚𝐫𝐜𝐡 𝟓𝐭𝐡, 𝟐𝟎𝟎𝟑, in 𝑻𝒉𝒆 𝑳𝒐𝒏𝒅𝒐𝒏 𝑺𝒕𝒖𝒅𝒊𝒐𝒔 at the British TV programme 𝐂𝐃:𝐔𝐊. It was five days before the song was released as the lead single from Placebo’s fourth studio album 𝐒𝐥𝐞𝐞𝐩𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐆𝐡𝐨𝐬𝐭𝐬.

These lines are the literary origin of what we celebrate today. The beginning of “International Placebo Day“ dates back to 8th of June 1949, the release date of George Orwell's “1984“ (also known as “Nineteen Eighty-Four“).

➡ Julia follows Winston home twice. The second time he almost kills her, because he thinks she is a spy of the Thought Police.

Winston and Julia are aware from the start (from the 2nd of May) that they will be captured and that there's no justification for their love affair (they are running out of alibis).

Some of you may wonder why the text stops here. Here's a quote by Brian that helps to understand:

Today we celebrate the ♦️𝐀𝐍𝐍𝐈𝐕𝐄𝐑𝐒𝐀𝐑𝐘 𝐨𝐟 “𝐓𝐇𝐄 𝐁𝐈𝐓𝐓𝐄𝐑 𝐄𝐍𝐃”♦️. It was released as the lead single from the album “Sleeping with ghosts” 19 years ago on March 10th 2003 and reached no. 12 in the UK Singles Chart.

The song was written and recorded in only two days (see quotes below). It is about couples who are breaking up and the anger that take hold of them at this time, but also the desire that arises from this injury.

The story of “The bitter end” is based on the novel “1984” by George Orwell, and there are severel references to this book in the lyrics. You can read everything about them here:

The music video was directed by Howard Greenhalgh and shows the band playing in the dish of the Lovell telescope, one of the largest radio telescopes in the world. It also displays infra-red snippets of a couple chasing each other. Finally they catch each other up and kiss. According to Greenhalgh the video tells the story about two people who found love and this love blows up their world.

📢 “One of my favourites was 'The bitter end' because I couldn't believe we were able to film it. We thought: let's make the end of the world, the end of the world according to the script, so let's make a video about two people who found love, and this blows up the world, but before that, the band needs to play somewhere. Let's put them on a satellite dish. When we arrived at the filming location, we were not allowed to film the group inside the plate. It was very dangerous so they only allowed us to film it from different angles. And we shot everything inside the telescope. And we filmed it outside. And then, in the studio, we overlaid the band's footage on a satellite dish. And we filmed around the saucer, flying in a helicopter. I couldn't believe they would let us do this. It was a telescope. "Wow!" We thought that we would not be allowed to fly in a helicopter, to shoot a satellite dish from the inside. We thought we could only remove the plate from the side. It's incredible. I also liked shooting with an infrared camera, because it was part of the story - the story of lost souls, they meet, and everything falls apart. We had special installations, lightning struck everywhere in the frame. And I think in this video Stefan looked like a "God of Rock" with his bass. I think that all the shots with them were good. I think, that it was one of their most comprehensible tracks. It was like a song with a good chorus. It brought them a lot of success. I remember how I came to the record company. The guys and I were there to talk about filming 'The bitter end'. And the first question Brian asked me was, "What do you think of this track?" He had never asked me that before. And I think he really, really liked this track. Maybe I could be wrong that he doubted the song, but I got the impression that he really liked the track and they wanted to know what I thought of it. I liked the track. I'll tell you one thing: I have Placebo records in my car and I need to be very careful when I play their music. Speeding is something that happens all the time when I listen to them. Damn it, I'm speeding.”

📌 𝗟𝗜𝗩𝗘 𝗛𝗜𝗦𝗧𝗢𝗥𝗬 📌
At live concerts “The bitter end“ is a well-established part of the setlist. Since its release in 2003 until 2018 there was not one single year where it wasn't brought on stage at least once. It's no surprise that “The bitter end“ is in the top 3 of the songs that were played live most often. Up to now there are 685 confirmed performances of it, the first one dates back to March 5th 2003 and took place at British TV show CD:UK. Last time it was played live at Sion sous les ètoiles festival 2018 in Switzerland on July 13th 2018.

Today I will talk to you about this peculiar 𝑩𝒓𝒊𝒂𝒏 𝑴𝒐𝒍𝒌𝒐's instrument, his lovely gay guitar called "𝑩𝒆𝒓𝒕𝒊𝒆", a pink 𝑮𝒊𝒃𝒔𝒐𝒏 𝑺𝑮-𝑿 that he used mainly to play the song "𝑻𝒉𝒆 𝑩𝒊𝒕𝒕𝒆𝒓 𝑬𝒏𝒅".

But sadly, just like the song, "𝑩𝒆𝒓𝒕𝒊𝒆" had a bitter end, since after 𝑩𝒓𝒊𝒂𝒏 used it in some TV shows and concerts of the "𝑺𝒍𝒆𝒆𝒑𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝑾𝒊𝒕𝒉 𝑮𝒉𝒐𝒔𝒕𝒔 𝑻𝒐𝒖𝒓" in 2003, everything suggests that 𝑺𝒕𝒆𝒇𝒂𝒏 𝑶𝒍𝒔𝒅𝒂𝒍 accidentally broke it, as 𝑩𝒓𝒊𝒂𝒏 revealed in an interview for a local TV channel in 𝑴𝒆𝒙𝒊𝒄𝒐, while he was talking about his guitars:

Just a short while ago one was destroyed in Paris, cause our lovely bassist Stefan hit my guitar with his bass - it simply broke into pieces, it was quite funny. Stefan is on stage at the moment a bit brutal towards me. All the time he is knocking me over or bump into me. I guess he has an unconscious antipathy against me - NO, that were just accidents. We are simply a bit more wild than in the past.
▪️𝙱𝚛𝚒𝚊𝚗 𝙼𝚘𝚕𝚔𝚘, 𝙸𝚀, 𝙽𝚘𝚟𝚎𝚖𝚋𝚎𝚛 𝟸𝟶𝟶𝟹.


What a pity that "𝑩𝒆𝒓𝒕𝒊𝒆" couldn't recover from that accident. 💔 The good thing is that, thanks to technology, some of the astounding performances where 𝑩𝒓𝒊𝒂𝒏 𝑴𝒐𝒍𝒌𝒐 used this guitar were immortalized and, to your delight, I have made a list of them, enjoy watching and listening dear soulmates! 🎸🔥🎶

And my goal was to search in detail the archive of all Placebo concerts and find the exact dates when the fans were lucky enough to experience the song "𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐁𝐢𝐭𝐭𝐞𝐫 𝐄𝐧𝐝" 𝐞𝐱𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐥𝐲 𝐨𝐧 𝐈𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐧𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐏𝐥𝐚𝐜𝐞𝐛𝐨 𝐃𝐚𝐲.

And to make your information complete, let's also see why writer George Orwell wrote this dystopian novel, and what Brian said about the origin of this song. And for fun, I'll give you a few reviews of how music critics received this great rock work.

 In writing the lyrics to The Bitter End, Brian was inspired by 𝐆𝐞𝐨𝐫𝐠𝐞 𝐎𝐫𝐰𝐞𝐥𝐥'𝐬 𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐲 𝐟𝐚𝐦𝐨𝐮𝐬 𝐧𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐥, "𝟏𝟗𝟖𝟒," which fits perfectly into the time and society we live in.
Thematically, „1984“ centres on the consequences of totalitarianism, mass surveillance, and repressive regimentation of persons and behaviours within society. Orwell, a democratic socialist himself, modelled the authoritarian government in the novel after Stalinist Russia. More broadly, the novel examines the role of truth and facts within politics and the ways in which they are manipulated.

⭐🔸Quite simply - this book must have influenced the soul of every reader, including Brian.🔸⭐

And is it clearer to you now? Throughout its existence in rock music, Placebo proclaims freedom of speech and any religion in society and the right to the uniqueness of every person on earth.
In any case, Brian elevated his lyrics about the ending relationship in this song above all others precisely by using such a prized and perfect dystopian work of an English writer.

“𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐁𝐢𝐭𝐭𝐞𝐫 𝐄𝐧𝐝” is one of the fans all-time favourites and became an inherent part of most Placebo shows. Up to now it was performed 679 times which makes it the third most often played song at live concerts after “𝐄𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐲 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐄𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐲 𝐦𝐞” 𝐚𝐧𝐝 “𝐒𝐩𝐞𝐜𝐢𝐚𝐥 𝐊”.

Now let's have a closer look at the official “The bitter end” video. It was directed by 𝘏𝘰𝘸𝘢𝘳𝘥 𝘎𝘳𝘦𝘦𝘯𝘩𝘢𝘭𝘨𝘩 and shows the band playing in the dish of the 𝘓𝘰𝘷𝘦𝘭𝘭 𝘛𝘦𝘭𝘦𝘴𝘤𝘰𝘱𝘦, one of the largest radio telescopes in the world (see location info below). Halfway through the music clip you can see infrared images of a couple chasing each other. Finally they catch each other up and kiss. According to Greenhalgh the video tells the story about two people who found love and this love blows up their world.

The Lovell Telescope or Jodrell Bank radar is located in Cheshire, near the place where ex-drummer Steve Hewitt grew up. In the “Once more with feeling” DVD he said that he used to hang out near this huge dish when he was a kid and “I never thought I’d be with the band, playing on top of it. It’s kind of a huge thing to achieve.“ But Brian immediately destroyed this narrative by revealing that they never really played on the satellite dish: “I hate to break the mystery, but the band isn’t playing on the telescope itself. Thanks to technology we did it in the studio. This video was filmed in January. So it would have been too cold for us to be comfortable up there.“

Stefan explained that after some videos which were a lot like short movies (like for example “Special K” or “Slave to the wage”) Placebo wanted to do a clip in which they could perform as band again.

Howard Greenhalgh had the idea for the location but was first convinced he would not be able to film it (see his statement below) but luckily he was wrong. Steve explained Howard's approach to the clip like this: “He tries to retain a modernist attitude towards most videos and tries to keep it futuristic, which I think you get from this.“ Brian thought about the idea for the video that it was visually arresting and would show the band in the best light possible.

For parts of the music clip Howard used heat-seeking cameras on night-time shots. In an interview the band said that this was very interesting and felt gorgeous because it was the first time they had seen something like this.

“There is a great energy on ‘The bitter end’. It just builds and builds. It does the song justice“, Steve Hewitt stated in an interview.

Brian said about Howard Greenhalgh that “the great thing about him is that we just show up and go: ‘Do what you want’, because we trust him. It’s really easy.“ And Steve explained that this helps them to relax and be themselves on the set. Brian added about the shooting of “The bitter end” that they had known Greenhalgh for more than five years then and after all this time it got very easy for him and the other band members to work with Howard as their video director.


📌 𝗛𝗢𝗪𝗔𝗥𝗗 𝗚𝗥𝗘𝗘𝗡𝗛𝗔𝗟𝗚𝗛 𝗢𝗡 𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗩𝗜𝗗𝗘𝗢 📌

“One of my favourites was 'The bitter end' because I couldn't believe we were able to film it. We thought: let's make the end of the world, the end of the world according to the script, so let's make a video about two people who found love, and this blows up the world, but before that, the band needs to play somewhere. Let's put them on a satellite dish. When we arrived at the filming location, we were not allowed to film the group inside the plate. It was very dangerous so they only allowed us to film it from different angles. And we shot everything inside the telescope. And we filmed it outside. And then, in the studio, we overlaid the band's footage on a satellite dish. And we filmed around the saucer, flying in a helicopter. I couldn't believe they would let us do this. It was a telescope. "Wow!" We thought that we would not be allowed to fly in a helicopter, to shoot a satellite dish from the inside. We thought we could only remove the plate from the side. It's incredible. I also liked shooting with an infrared camera, because it was part of the story - the story of lost souls, they meet, and everything falls apart. We had special installations, lightning struck everywhere in the frame. And I think in this video Stefan looked like a "God of Rock" with his bass. I think that all the shots with them were good. I think, that it was one of their most comprehensible tracks. It was like a song with a good chorus. It brought them a lot of success. I remember how I came to the record company. The guys and I were there to talk about filming 'The bitter end'. And the first question Brian asked me was, "What do you think of this track?" He had never asked me that before. And I think he really, really liked this track. Maybe I could be wrong that he doubted the song, but I got the impression that he really liked the track and they wanted to know what I thought of it. I liked the track. I'll tell you one thing: I have Placebo records in my car and I need to be very careful when I play their music. Speeding is something that happens all the time when I listen to them. Damn it, I'm speeding.”

The Lovell Telescope is a radio telescope at Jodrell Bank Observatory near Goostrey, Cheshire in the north-west of England. When the construction was finished in 1957 the telescope was the largest steerable dish radio telescope in the world. It is now the third-largest. t was originally known as the "250 ft telescope" or the Radio Telescope at Jodrell Bank, before becoming the Mark I telescope around 1961. It was renamed to Lovell Telescope in 1987 after Sir Bernard Lovell and became a Grade I listed building in 1988. The telescope forms part of the MERLIN and European VLBI Network arrays of radio telescopes.

Howard Douglas Greenhalgh was born in Halifax, West Riding of Yorkshire on February 19th 1963. Apart from “The bitter end” in 2003 he directed six other videos for Placebo: “Nancy Boy”, “Bruise Pristine” (both 1997), “Slave to the wage” (2000), “Special K” (2001), “This Picture” (also 2003) and “For what it's worth” (2009). The British director of music videos and advertising also worked with bands like Pet Shop Boys, The Jesus and Mary Chain, A-ha, Sting, Elton John, George Michael, Snap!, Spice Girls, Genesis, Sneaker Pimps, Muse, Iron Maiden, Billy Talent, INXS and OMD. One of his most famous music clips is probably “Black hole sun” by Soundgarden. Describing his approach to music video direction Howard Greenhalgh said in a 2010 interview that "With anything, it’s the lyrics that are everything. You pray that there are good lyrics in a track because that leads you immediately to what you’re going to do."
Greenhalgh owns Soft Target, a creative hub for commercials, digital content, photography and music videos based in London.
