The acoustic show for FNAC in Ancienne Belgique, known as 🔴ℂ𝔸𝔹𝔸ℝ𝔼𝕋 𝕆𝔽 𝔻𝔼𝕊𝕀ℝ𝔼🔴, held in 𝐁𝐫𝐮𝐬𝐬𝐞𝐥𝐬 𝐨𝐧 𝐉𝐮𝐧𝐞 𝟐, 𝟐𝟎𝟎𝟏 was surprising in that several songs from the new album underwent an interesting change.

A song that was played right at the beginning of this very intimate gig.

The original almost punk version in a fast rhythm has a completely different effect on our minds than this beauty, which you can hear in the link below.
Just remember the recent post by Olga, which beautifully describes that during this song it is simply impossible to do anything else at the concert but to be loud and show the connection with the band with your whole body and that is why "𝐒𝐏𝐄𝐂𝐈𝐀𝐋 𝐊" is part of the setlist again, so that we all leave our mobile phones in our pockets.
I absolutely agree with her observation. However, the complete opposite is the slow version of this gem.

If you let yourself be affected by the lyrics you already know by heart in a slow version, maybe, like me, you will feel that its wildness and electrifying charge is gone, leaving only a wounded soul that maybe wants to give up on everything.

However, the reference to the seventh seal may also refer to the biblical apocalypse described by St. John in his Revelation. It is a prophetic vision of the end of the present world, the Last Judgement, and the coming of the New Jerusalem.

Many posts have been written by us about this song.
In the fast version, it's a really great song that will get us all singing and dancing en masse.
However, the slow acoustic version takes me to a whole other dimension.

For me, it is a highly spiritual song, expressing even more loving support to keep breaking down our boundaries and constantly overcome our limits...

As we did once with 𝐈𝐧𝐟𝐫𝐚-𝐑𝐞𝐝, let’s today reflect, together with you, on the reason why 𝐒𝐏𝐄𝐂𝐈𝐀𝐋 𝐊 has been included into the most of the Never Let Me Go concert setlists so far.
Except for the fact that 𝑩𝒓𝒊𝒂𝒏 has never understood a doubtful pleasure of experiencing the show through a small phone screen, he just finds it distracting and upsetting to not see any vivid and passionate feedback from the fans. Looking from the stage, the view of the crowd standing still to not shake their phones while recording feels definitely not the same as people dancing, clapping, screaming and singing along!

Obviously, if you start recording, you hardly ever sing ‘param pam pam parararam’ loudly into your own phone as it might ruin the video… But luckily, most fans still choose to join ‘𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒄𝒐𝒍𝒍𝒆𝒄𝒕𝒊𝒗𝒆 𝒆𝒖𝒑𝒉𝒐𝒓𝒊𝒂’ as Brian names the best of the concert experience possible.
Indeed, with 𝐒𝐏𝐄𝐂𝐈𝐀𝐋 𝐊, the audience ALWAYS participates especially enthusiastically.
And who could have doubted, Placebo need maximum interaction with the audience now, they need it MORE THAN EVER!🙌💗

🟣Back to the song itself now. Let’s remind ourselves the initial meaning and vibe of 𝐒𝐏𝐄𝐂𝐈𝐀𝐋 𝐊, melodic, punky, fuzz-drenched track about the beginning of a love affair which ends up with "weeping wounds that never heal."


𝐌𝐚𝐭𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐞𝐮 𝐂𝐮𝐥𝐥𝐞𝐫𝐨𝐧: Let's go back to Special K. already, there are plenty of people who don't know what it corresponds to exactly.

Today we celebrate the ⭐𝐀𝐍𝐍𝐈𝐕𝐄𝐑𝐒𝐀𝐑𝐘⭐ of "𝐒𝐏𝐄𝐂𝐈𝐀𝐋 𝐊" which was released 𝟐𝟏 𝒚𝒆𝒂𝒓𝒔 𝒂𝒈𝒐 (March 19, 2001) as the third single from 𝑷𝒍𝒂𝒄𝒆𝒃𝒐's third album "𝑩𝒍𝒂𝒄𝒌 𝑴𝒂𝒓𝒌𝒆𝒕 𝑴𝒖𝒔𝒊𝒄" (2000).

"𝑺𝒑𝒆𝒄𝒊𝒂𝒍 𝑲" was recorded at 𝑶𝒍𝒚𝒎𝒑𝒊𝒄 𝑺𝒕𝒖𝒅𝒊𝒐𝒔 in 𝑳𝒐𝒏𝒅𝒐𝒏, was produced by 𝑷𝒂𝒖𝒍 𝑪𝒐𝒓𝒌𝒆𝒕𝒕 and 𝑷𝒍𝒂𝒄𝒆𝒃𝒐, engineered by 𝑳𝒐𝒓𝒓𝒂𝒊𝒏𝒆 𝑭𝒓𝒂𝒏𝒄𝒊𝒔, mixed by 𝑷𝒂𝒖𝒍 𝑪𝒐𝒓𝒌𝒆𝒕𝒕 and features backing vocals by 𝑺𝒆𝒗𝒆𝒓𝒆 𝑳𝒐𝒓𝒆𝒏 ( whose real name is 𝑪𝒂𝒓𝒐𝒍𝒊𝒏𝒆 𝑭𝒊𝒏𝒄𝒉), the lead singer of the indie rock band 𝑳𝒊𝒏𝒐𝒍𝒆𝒖𝒎.


Originally the song had the working title "𝑮𝒓𝒂𝒗𝒊𝒕𝒚" and was later called "𝑺𝒑𝒆𝒄𝒊𝒂𝒍 𝑲" which is not a reference to a brand of cereal but is the slang word for 𝒌𝒆𝒕𝒂𝒎𝒊𝒏𝒆, a laboratory drug that veterinarians use a lot to tranquilize animals. Just one dose causes amnesia or delirium, takes away your ability to talk and walk, so it's quite dangerous. In the following excerpt from an interview at the time, 𝑩𝒓𝒊𝒂𝒏 𝑴𝒐𝒍𝒌𝒐 explained why he chose that title and what he wanted to express in the song:

The band had planned to release the single as a two-part CD set and a 12" vinyl, but due to the drug reference in the lyrics several radio stations refused to play the song. So the band decided to release an Enhanced CD with 7 tracks plus the official video.

The amazing video for "𝑺𝒑𝒆𝒄𝒊𝒂𝒍 𝑲" was premiered just a few days before the single release, on March 12, 2001, and was directed by renowned music video director 𝑯𝒐𝒘𝒂𝒓𝒅 𝑮𝒓𝒆𝒆𝒏𝒉𝒂𝒍𝒈𝒉, who had previously made the videos for the songs "𝑵𝒂𝒏𝒄𝒚 𝑩𝒐𝒚" and "𝑩𝒓𝒖𝒊𝒔𝒆 𝑷𝒓𝒊𝒔𝒕𝒊𝒏𝒆". The video was shot at 𝑵𝒂𝒕 𝑾𝒆𝒔𝒕 𝑴𝒆𝒅𝒊𝒂 𝑪𝒆𝒏𝒕𝒓𝒆 𝑺𝒕. 𝑱𝒐𝒉𝒏𝒔 𝑾𝒐𝒐𝒅, 𝑳𝒐𝒏𝒅𝒐𝒏 and has a futuristic aesthetic as the plot is based on the 60's sci-fi movie "𝑭𝒂𝒏𝒕𝒂𝒔𝒕𝒊𝒄 𝑽𝒐𝒚𝒂𝒈𝒆". In the video clip we see 𝑩𝒓𝒊𝒂𝒏 𝑴𝒐𝒍𝒌𝒐 board a special ship that is shrunken down by scientist-android

–who is played by 𝑺𝒕𝒆𝒇𝒂𝒏 𝑶𝒍𝒔𝒅𝒂𝒍– and then it's accidentally dropped into 𝑺𝒕𝒆𝒗𝒆 𝑯𝒆𝒘𝒊𝒕𝒕's mouth. 𝑺𝒕𝒆𝒇𝒂𝒏 and other scientists do their best to locate 𝑩𝒓𝒊𝒂𝒏 and rescue him, finally finding him in 𝑺𝒕𝒆𝒗𝒆's tear duct.

🔸 Dear Soulmates, today, I'm going to tell you a little story about 𝑺𝒑𝒆𝒄𝒊𝒂𝒍 𝑲 single release.

In the 1990s, seeing that the CD market was flourishing, the UK music industry decided to make it mandatory to commercialise singles in different formats. The result was that UK singles were sold as three separate CDs with three tracks each, or more commonly, two CDs and an additional format ( such as 7inch, 12inch or DVD).

Due to 𝑑𝑟𝑢𝑔 𝑟𝑒𝑙𝑎𝑡𝑒𝑑 𝑙𝑦𝑟𝑖𝑐𝑠, some radio stations didn't want to play 𝑺𝒑𝒆𝒄𝒊𝒂𝒍 𝑲, which prevented the song from reaching a high chart position.

Therefore, instead of two part CD release as they did for 𝑇𝑎𝑠𝑡𝑒 𝐼𝑛 𝑀𝑒𝑛 or even for 𝑆𝑙𝑎𝑣𝑒 𝑡𝑜 𝑇ℎ𝑒 𝑊𝑎𝑔𝑒 and former releases, 𝑃𝑙𝑎𝑐𝑒𝑏𝑜 decided so boldly to edit the single into an EP including 7 tracks and the video, so that the single wasn't eligible for the charts ranking, as for being elilgible, a single doesn't have to exceed "25 𝑚𝑖𝑛𝑢𝑡𝑒𝑠 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝑛𝑜 𝑚𝑜𝑟𝑒 𝑡ℎ𝑎𝑛 𝑓𝑜𝑢𝑟 𝑠𝑜𝑛𝑔𝑠 (𝑎𝑢𝑑𝑖𝑜 𝑜𝑟 𝑣𝑖𝑑𝑒𝑜) 𝑝𝑙𝑢𝑠 𝑎𝑙𝑡𝑒𝑟𝑛𝑎𝑡𝑖𝑣𝑒 𝑎𝑢𝑑𝑖𝑜 𝑣𝑒𝑟𝑠𝑖𝑜𝑛𝑠 𝑜𝑓 𝑓𝑒𝑎𝑡𝑢𝑟𝑒𝑑 𝑠𝑜𝑛𝑔𝑠." 🔸 On March 9th 2001, always caring for their fans and defying conventions, 𝑃𝑙𝑎𝑐𝑒𝑏𝑜 announced the release of the song with this explanation:

⭐ 💬 The British Music Industry which has recently been championing disposable, facile pop and music which promotes homophobia, misogyny and violence has in it's infinite wisdom, taken offence to the lyrical content of our new single "Special K'.

This combined with our ongoing dissatisfaction with the two CD system, since we feel it rips off genuine music fans, has forced us to take the decision to bypass the system completely. 'Special K' will therefore be released on one single, available at regular CD single price, and comprise of 8 items which will make it non chart eligible.

We feel this is the best deal for our fans and that it drives home the statement that we don't care about chart positions.

Today we have a special ♦️𝗔𝗡𝗡𝗜𝗩𝗘𝗥𝗦𝗔𝗥𝗬♦️ to celebrate: Exactly 20 years ago today, on the 19th of March 2001, “𝗦𝗣𝗘𝗖𝗜𝗔𝗟 𝗞” was released as third single from “Black market music”.

There is a specific theme that runs through the album, and this theme is 𝘭𝘰𝘷𝘦 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘢𝘥𝘥𝘪𝘤𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯. According to Brian "Special K" explores the link between those two things. “It is uppers and the rush of falling in love” (Melody Maker, October 2000).

The music clip is based on the 60’s movie “Fantastic Voyage”. It was directed by Howard Greenhalgh and depicts Brian and the other members of the band in an undisclosed, scientific headquarters where Brian is shrunk down to microbiological proportions and accidentally dropped into the mouth of drummer Steve Hewitt. The video in its entirety maintains a sci-fi aesthetic throughout. It ends with a shrunken Brian is sucked out through Steve's tear duct.

“Special K” was put out in two different versions, as regular single CD with the b-side tracks “Dub psychosis” and “Passive aggressive (Brothers in Rhythm mix)” and as an enhanced CD consisting of seven songs and the “Special K” video.

📌 𝗟𝗜𝗩𝗘 𝗛𝗜𝗦𝗧𝗢𝗥𝗬 📌
From 2000 to 2018 “Special K” was played live at least one time every year. Altogether there are 687 confirmed performances of the song which makes it the no. 2 in the tour statistic right after “Every you Every me”. It's remarkable that “Special K” is such a fan favourite as it was not too much of a success in the international charts.
