A song that was played right at the beginning of this very intimate gig.

The original almost punk version in a fast rhythm has a completely different effect on our minds than this beauty, which you can hear in the link below.
Just remember the recent post by Olga, which beautifully describes that during this song it is simply impossible to do anything else at the concert but to be loud and show the connection with the band with your whole body and that is why "๐’๐๐„๐‚๐ˆ๐€๐‹ ๐Š" is part of the setlist again, so that we all leave our mobile phones in our pockets.
I absolutely agree with her observation. However, the complete opposite is the slow version of this gem.

If you let yourself be affected by the lyrics you already know by heart in a slow version, maybe, like me, you will feel that its wildness and electrifying charge is gone, leaving only a wounded soul that maybe wants to give up on everything.

However, the reference to the seventh seal may also refer to the biblical apocalypse described by St. John in his Revelation. It is a prophetic vision of the end of the present world, the Last Judgement, and the coming of the New Jerusalem.

Many posts have been written by us about this song.
In the fast version, it's a really great song that will get us all singing and dancing en masse.
However, the slow acoustic version takes me to a whole other dimension.

For me, it is a highly spiritual song, expressing even more loving support to keep breaking down our boundaries and constantly overcome our limits...

When I hear Brian's honey voice singing

It gets me into a deeper meditation where I feel that my desires for self-realization can handle obstacles with more ease than when my waking ego, full of fears and worries about what others will say, steps in.

It often involves a bit of risk taking and courage. But we're certainly living proof of the fact that these decisions that we made when we were very young, we're living proof embodied that the road less traveled can be incredibly fruitful, if you stay true to yourself, if you have the desire to be an individual, if you have the desire and the courage to chase your dreams. …/.../ And if you're prepared to make sacrifices and take risks, if you're lucky, if your karma is good, then these things will payoff in the end. Which I think it's a positive message really.“

As we did once with ๐ˆ๐ง๐Ÿ๐ซ๐š-๐‘๐ž๐, let’s today reflect, together with you, on the reason why ๐’๐๐„๐‚๐ˆ๐€๐‹ ๐Š has been included into the most of the Never Let Me Go concert setlists so far.
Except for the fact that ๐‘ฉ๐’“๐’Š๐’‚๐’ has never understood a doubtful pleasure of experiencing the show through a small phone screen, he just finds it distracting and upsetting to not see any vivid and passionate feedback from the fans. Looking from the stage, the view of the crowd standing still to not shake their phones while recording feels definitely not the same as people dancing, clapping, screaming and singing along!

Obviously, if you start recording, you hardly ever sing ‘param pam pam parararam’ loudly into your own phone as it might ruin the video… But luckily, most fans still choose to join ‘๐’•๐’‰๐’† ๐’„๐’๐’๐’๐’†๐’„๐’•๐’Š๐’—๐’† ๐’†๐’–๐’‘๐’‰๐’๐’“๐’Š๐’‚’ as Brian names the best of the concert experience possible.
Indeed, with ๐’๐๐„๐‚๐ˆ๐€๐‹ ๐Š, the audience ALWAYS participates especially enthusiastically.
And who could have doubted, Placebo need maximum interaction with the audience now, they need it MORE THAN EVER!๐Ÿ™Œ๐Ÿ’—

๐ŸŸฃBack to the song itself now. Let’s remind ourselves the initial meaning and vibe of ๐’๐๐„๐‚๐ˆ๐€๐‹ ๐Š, melodic, punky, fuzz-drenched track about the beginning of a love affair which ends up with "weeping wounds that never heal."

๐Ÿ“ข๐๐ซ๐ข๐š๐ง ๐Œ๐จ๐ฅ๐ค๐จ: Well, Special K it's a slang name for a drug, ketamine. I took it once 10 years ago, and they gave it in the 1950s to astronauts to create the feeling of anti-gravity, and that's how it really feels.
๐Œ๐š๐ญ๐ญ๐ก๐ข๐ž๐ฎ ๐‚๐ฎ๐ฅ๐ฅ๐ž๐ซ๐จ๐ง:
Now it's an elephant anesthetic after all.
๐Ÿ“ข๐๐ซ๐ข๐š๐ง ๐Œ๐จ๐ฅ๐ค๐จ: Yeah. (laughs). And I don't recommend it. Once was really enough. But the song is also a theme that runs through a few songs on the album that compares drugs to love. And on Special K, it compares the ups, the ups on an illegal substance and the feeling that you get when you fall in love, when you have a crush. They are quite similar. But the moral of the story is that what goes up must come down.

๐Ÿ“ข๐๐ซ๐ข๐š๐ง: "It's a nickname for a drug given to a newborn babies to prevent thrombosis," says Molko of the song's title. "It's also used to tranquilize horses, and in the 1950s, it was given to astronauts to create the feeling of anti-gravity. And that's the song's metaphor. What goes up must come down. The same is true of drugs and love. Religion, drugs and love are what most people are addicted to in the world."

๐ŸŸฃBack then already, Brian kept the lyrics wide open for interpretations.
What is still relevant, in my opinion, is a theme of no escaping the gravity in today’s crazy world. Being blind of chasing senseless goals as power and profit, should in the end bring a person (regime/society/humanity – you name it) down...

๐ŸŸฃHowever, I’d like to finish my post with a couple of quotes to make you smile๐Ÿ˜ƒ
๐Ÿ“ข๐๐ซ๐ข๐š๐ง: I think people know that the song “Special K” refers to the name given to ketamine on the street. It has nothing to do with Corn Flakes! Some of our fans were actually waving boxes of Special K cereal at recent gigs. It was rather funny. And in our recording studio, we had a mascot, a box of Special K. I had put it there one morning, on a desk. And it stayed until the end of the recording.
๐Ÿ“ข๐’๐ญ๐ž๐ฏ๐ž ๐‡๐ž๐ฐ๐ข๐ญ๐ญ: Thanks to Special K, youth keep the line!

Originally the song had the working title "๐‘ฎ๐’“๐’‚๐’—๐’Š๐’•๐’š" and was later called "๐‘บ๐’‘๐’†๐’„๐’Š๐’‚๐’ ๐‘ฒ" which is not a reference to a brand of cereal but is the slang word for ๐’Œ๐’†๐’•๐’‚๐’Ž๐’Š๐’๐’†, a laboratory drug that veterinarians use a lot to tranquilize animals. Just one dose causes amnesia or delirium, takes away your ability to talk and walk, so it's quite dangerous. In the following excerpt from an interview at the time, ๐‘ฉ๐’“๐’Š๐’‚๐’ ๐‘ด๐’๐’๐’Œ๐’ explained why he chose that title and what he wanted to express in the song:

The band had planned to release the single as a two-part CD set and a 12" vinyl, but due to the drug reference in the lyrics several radio stations refused to play the song. So the band decided to release an Enhanced CD with 7 tracks plus the official video.

๐Ÿ“Our dear ๐‘ณ๐’‚๐’†๐’•๐’Š๐’•๐’Š๐’‚ wrote an interesting post where she tells in more detail the story of the censorship and the release of "๐‘บ๐’‘๐’†๐’„๐’Š๐’‚๐’ ๐‘ฒ".

๐Ÿ”ธ Dear Soulmates, today, I'm going to tell you a little story about ๐‘บ๐’‘๐’†๐’„๐’Š๐’‚๐’ ๐‘ฒ single release.

In the 1990s, seeing that the CD market was flourishing, the UK music industry decided to make it mandatory to commercialise singles in different formats. The result was that UK singles were sold as three separate CDs with three tracks each, or more commonly, two CDs and an additional format ( such as 7inch, 12inch or DVD).

Due to ๐‘‘๐‘Ÿ๐‘ข๐‘” ๐‘Ÿ๐‘’๐‘™๐‘Ž๐‘ก๐‘’๐‘‘ ๐‘™๐‘ฆ๐‘Ÿ๐‘–๐‘๐‘ , some radio stations didn't want to play ๐‘บ๐’‘๐’†๐’„๐’Š๐’‚๐’ ๐‘ฒ, which prevented the song from reaching a high chart position.

Therefore, instead of two part CD release as they did for ๐‘‡๐‘Ž๐‘ ๐‘ก๐‘’ ๐ผ๐‘› ๐‘€๐‘’๐‘› or even for ๐‘†๐‘™๐‘Ž๐‘ฃ๐‘’ ๐‘ก๐‘œ ๐‘‡โ„Ž๐‘’ ๐‘Š๐‘Ž๐‘”๐‘’ and former releases, ๐‘ƒ๐‘™๐‘Ž๐‘๐‘’๐‘๐‘œ decided so boldly to edit the single into an EP including 7 tracks and the video, so that the single wasn't eligible for the charts ranking, as for being elilgible, a single doesn't have to exceed "25 ๐‘š๐‘–๐‘›๐‘ข๐‘ก๐‘’๐‘  ๐‘Ž๐‘›๐‘‘ ๐‘›๐‘œ ๐‘š๐‘œ๐‘Ÿ๐‘’ ๐‘กโ„Ž๐‘Ž๐‘› ๐‘“๐‘œ๐‘ข๐‘Ÿ ๐‘ ๐‘œ๐‘›๐‘”๐‘  (๐‘Ž๐‘ข๐‘‘๐‘–๐‘œ ๐‘œ๐‘Ÿ ๐‘ฃ๐‘–๐‘‘๐‘’๐‘œ) ๐‘๐‘™๐‘ข๐‘  ๐‘Ž๐‘™๐‘ก๐‘’๐‘Ÿ๐‘›๐‘Ž๐‘ก๐‘–๐‘ฃ๐‘’ ๐‘Ž๐‘ข๐‘‘๐‘–๐‘œ ๐‘ฃ๐‘’๐‘Ÿ๐‘ ๐‘–๐‘œ๐‘›๐‘  ๐‘œ๐‘“ ๐‘“๐‘’๐‘Ž๐‘ก๐‘ข๐‘Ÿ๐‘’๐‘‘ ๐‘ ๐‘œ๐‘›๐‘”๐‘ ." ๐Ÿ”ธ On March 9th 2001, always caring for their fans and defying conventions, ๐‘ƒ๐‘™๐‘Ž๐‘๐‘’๐‘๐‘œ announced the release of the song with this explanation:

⭐ ๐Ÿ’ฌ The British Music Industry which has recently been championing disposable, facile pop and music which promotes homophobia, misogyny and violence has in it's infinite wisdom, taken offence to the lyrical content of our new single "Special K'.

This combined with our ongoing dissatisfaction with the two CD system, since we feel it rips off genuine music fans, has forced us to take the decision to bypass the system completely. 'Special K' will therefore be released on one single, available at regular CD single price, and comprise of 8 items which will make it non chart eligible.

We feel this is the best deal for our fans and that it drives home the statement that we don't care about chart positions.

Take care and have respect for each other. Keep the faith and never let the sycophants and small minded people of this world get you down.

Sincerely,
Brian Molko
Stefan Olsdal

Today we have a special ♦️๐—”๐—ก๐—ก๐—œ๐—ฉ๐—˜๐—ฅ๐—ฆ๐—”๐—ฅ๐—ฌ♦️ to celebrate: Exactly 20 years ago today, on the 19th of March 2001, “๐—ฆ๐—ฃ๐—˜๐—–๐—œ๐—”๐—Ÿ ๐—ž” was released as third single from “Black market music”.

There is a specific theme that runs through the album, and this theme is According to Brian "Special K" explores the link between those two things. “It is uppers and the rush of falling in love” (Melody Maker, October 2000).

The music clip is based on the 60’s movie “Fantastic Voyage”. It was directed by Howard Greenhalgh and depicts Brian and the other members of the band in an undisclosed, scientific headquarters where Brian is shrunk down to microbiological proportions and accidentally dropped into the mouth of drummer Steve Hewitt. The video in its entirety maintains a sci-fi aesthetic throughout. It ends with a shrunken Brian is sucked out through Steve's tear duct.

“Special K” was put out in two different versions, as regular single CD with the b-side tracks “Dub psychosis” and “Passive aggressive (Brothers in Rhythm mix)” and as an enhanced CD consisting of seven songs and the “Special K” video.

From 2000 to 2018 “Special K” was played live at least one time every year. Altogether there are 687 confirmed performances of the song which makes it the no. 2 in the tour statistic right after “Every you Every me”. It's remarkable that “Special K” is such a fan favourite as it was not too much of a success in the international charts.
