๐๐ซ๐ข๐š๐ง: I would say the fact that we are so popular in France is for us a little mystery, but not really a huge mystery thinking of the other Anglo-Saxon bands which have a lot of success in this country. There are The Cures, Depeche Mode for example. We have something in common with them musically and in spirit. It's this dark romanticism, in which you have a very long literary, cinematographic and musical tradition as well. Maybe it's because we've always done our interviews in French, but it can't be just that alone. There must be other things. But we don't really try too hard to find out what these things are, because we work as artists in a very, very instinctive way. So if we find the reason, we might be a little too aware of that answer and then we might start working in a different way. So we make the decision to never explain anything, to keep working this way, to follow our instincts , which has served us very well until now. And that made us very popular in this country.

๐๐ซ๐ข๐š๐ง: Absolutely. We don't feel like telling people as in a Hollywood movie tells you how to feel. It's important to us that there is an ambiguity left in every song so that each person, who listens to it, can live their personal story through that song. I think that's why our music has been so successful. It's not hiding behind things, but say things as they are.

Dear soulmates!
Again, I’ve got something for all of you who love old rare Placebo stuff. This is an ๐Ÿ”ธ๐ˆ๐๐“๐„๐‘๐•๐ˆ๐„๐– ๐ฐ๐ข๐ญ๐ก ๐’๐ญ๐ž๐Ÿ๐š๐ง๐Ÿ”ธ (and a little bit with ๐๐ซ๐ข๐š๐ง as well) done at his then flat in west London, that was published in ๐‘ด๐’‚๐’“๐’„๐’‰ ๐’Š๐’”๐’”๐’–๐’†, ๐Ÿ๐Ÿ—๐Ÿ—๐Ÿ—, ๐’๐’‡ ๐‘บ๐’†๐’๐’†๐’„๐’• ๐’Ž๐’‚๐’ˆ๐’‚๐’›๐’Š๐’๐’†. Stef revealed some details about his everyday life and described his flat that was Placebo home studio back then.
Of course, too much changed since those times… but there are so many sweet curious moments about our beloved Placebo “babies” in the article that I’m pretty sure, you will love it!

One word: Ikea. Yes, post-Velvet Goldmine glam, Placebo's bassist reveals the more subdued home furnishings favoured by a Swede abroad. And he loves Abba too...
"I'm sorry about the mess. I'm afraid that we had a bit of a party last night." It's the day after Placebo bassist ๐‘บ๐’•๐’†๐’‡๐’‚๐’ ๐‘ถ๐’๐’”๐’…๐’‚๐’'๐’” ๐’ƒ๐’Š๐’“๐’•๐’‰๐’…๐’‚๐’š [that is March 31st], he's got a splitting headache and his flat looks like the site of a bizarre zoological experiment on the effects of Buckfast on gorillas. So, he's not in the best of states to receive the Lloyd Grossman treatment. "Here, have some birthday cake while I clean up a bit," says the ever-courteous Stefan while ๐‘บ๐’†๐’๐’†๐’„๐’• is treated to the strange sight of ๐‘ฉ๐’“๐’Š๐’‚๐’ ๐‘ด๐’๐’๐’Œ๐’ doing the wash-up.
In keeping with the Swedish stereotype perpetuated by those annoying Ikea adverts, Stefan's homestead is usually a highly ordered affair, situated in one of the posher New Labour-favoured areas of west London. There's a strange karma-like coincidence that led Stefan to pick this flat however - it used to belong to fellow ๐‘บ๐’„๐’‚๐’๐’…๐’Š๐’๐’‚๐’—๐’Š๐’‚๐’ ๐’“๐’๐’„๐’Œ ๐’”๐’•๐’‚๐’“ ๐‘ท๐’‚๐’–๐’ ๐‘พ๐’‚๐’‚๐’Œ๐’•๐’‚๐’‚๐’“, the keyboardist from '80s Norwegian legends A-Ha. So, now they've got glam out of their system with their involvement in Velvet Goldmine, maybe it's time for a rolled-up-sleeves ‘80s revival from the 'Cebe.
Having finally put the Jif cleaner away, Stefan demonstrates that there's a homely side to Placebo that has nothing to do with breasts and all the rest...

๐Ÿ”ถ๐Ÿ. ๐•๐ˆ๐ƒ๐„๐Ž ๐“๐€๐๐„๐’
There are tapes that we’re going to edit into projections for the stage show. If you just read the production notes it doesn’t look like it’ll be much fun – all things about amoebas and sperm and plankton. But when they’re all put together they’ll look fantastic. Trust me! We want to turn the concerts into real spectacles. Placebo are showmen! Like Abba!

Despite our image, we’re pretty boring most of the time. I like to mess around recording bits in here. I could make up some story about the studio being haunted, except it wouldn’t be true. It can be a bit eerie being sat in here on your own though. The flat is situated in-between an ambulance and fire station, so there is dead silence punctuated by screaming sirens every so often. Maybe I’ll be able to incorporate them into a track one day. And, of course, if there’s ever an emergency we’re ideally situated. Considering our track record, this could turn out to be handy.

๐Ÿ”ถ๐Ÿ‘. ๐‹๐Ž๐Ž๐‘
The floor was sound-proofed by Paul Waaktaar – it must’ve cost fortune to do. So I recon he must’ve used this place aa a studio. Just imagine – maybe he recorded “The Living Daylights” here or even (whispers reverently) “Take On Me”. Actually, it might’ve been a bit cooler if it’d belonged to the singer Morten Harket – he was much better looking. But you can’t have everything. Even though the floor’s sound-proofed, the neighbours complain constantly about the noise. Maybe it’s just because we jump up and down on them a lot, especially when listening to Abba. I firmly believe that I’ve got Agnetha running through my veins. We are a bit noisy, but what I never understand is that there’s a club next door that plays pounding house, and they never complain about that. Maybe they just don’t like hearing “The Winner Takes It All” at four at the morning. Either that or they like their Pete Tong.

Nail polish is our fashion downfall. We all love it – I’m wearing a nice shade of black on my toes right now. This is a special Placebo nail varnish. It’s a promotional tool from the record company, but we use it too. I’m pretty lazy – I should really shop around for the right colour for me. But it’s hard to get the right shade if you’re a six-foot Swedish bloke.

Yes, tragically they are from Ikea. It’s hard to resist, especially if you’re Swedish. I mean Ikea is worth visiting for their delicious Swedish menu alone. But I try not to go too often – it’s a bit of a cheat really.

I love collecting these toys – the more absurd and silly the better. And the great thing is that you can really play them! (Breaks into a downright disturbing version of ‘Bruise Pristine’ on the miniature guitar). Well, you don’t sound like Jimi Hendrix, but they’re really good for producing unusual sounds you wouldn’t be able to get elsewhere. We even used a couple of them on the first album, which isn’t something that you’d see Oasis do. They’re wasted on children, I think.

“This was so much fun to film, not that my role was very big – I played bass in this band which sounded like a cross between The Sweet and Suzi Quatro. I leave the speaking to Brian.”
Brian: “It was a really mad film to make, just a bunch of glammed up lunatics running around London in outrageous clothes and wigs. I love all the music from that time – well, not ’Tiger Feet’, obviously, but Marc Bolan is great. I don’t care what the critics think – I think it’s a really beautiful film. Too many people thought it’d be an authorized history of glam rock, and that’s why they were disappointed.”

๐Ÿ”ถ๐Ÿ–. ๐€๐๐๐€ ๐๐Ž๐Ž๐Š
“I admit that my Abba obsession is a bit out of hand, but they were the best. I don’t think we could ever cover them though – their songs are untouchable. They’re one of the few bands that could make a decent film – Brian, what was it called?”
Brian (excitedly): “It had a simple title – Abba The Movie. It was fantastic, all about this Australian radio Dj who spent the whole film trying to track Abba down for an interview. The best thing about it is that it features all these Australian soap actors, like Lou Carpenter from Neighbours as a heavy. Actually, it did have some annoying moments – the Dj spends the whole film making excuses for not getting an interview – “Hi, I’m in Perth. Nearly got them this time…”

Velvet Goldmine movie premiere, 19 October 1998

๐Ÿ”ถ๐Ÿ—. ๐Ž๐’๐‚๐€๐‘ ๐–๐ˆ๐‹๐ƒ๐„ ๐๐Ž๐Ž๐Š
“He just makes me laugh – this is just a great book to dip into if you’re in need of a quick blast of wit. [Picks out an epigram at random] ‘Wickedness is a myth invented by good people to account for the curious attractiveness of others.’ Oops – maybe that wasn’t one of his better ones. But to be honest it doesn’t get read nearly as much as the Abba book.”

๐Ÿ”ถ๐Ÿ๐ŸŽ. ๐‚๐ƒ ๐’๐„๐‹๐„๐‚๐“๐ˆ๐Ž๐
“These are just some of my favourite listens. I love the William s. Burroughs CD – his voice is amazing. People are surprised we like things like Blondie. They shouldn’t be – Placebo are definitely a pop group.
Brian: “Hang on, a couple of those look a bit familiar. You stole them off me, you bastard! Return them to me@”
Stefan: “No they’re mine! Fuck off!”

๐Ÿ”ถ๐Ÿ๐Ÿ. ๐‘๐”๐ƒ๐„ ๐๐€๐ˆ๐๐“๐ˆ๐๐†
“People come in and tell me that this picture is upside down and I’m like ‘I know! I like it better that way.’ There’s something really intriguing about it – sometimes I think it’s erotic, other times it’s really nasty and oppressive. I think it’s one of Madonna’s favourites as well. There isn’t very much art around the rest of the flat though – there’s not many pictures you could stand to look at every day.”

๐Ÿ”ถ๐Ÿ๐Ÿ. ๐‘๐”๐ƒ๐„ ๐…
“This is the prize we won at the In The City conference for being the Best Unsigned Band. [Clearly unamused] It’s very funny, isn’t it? Actually we were really pleased to win it, but the shine was taken off it as we were co-winners alongside Kula Shaker and Performance. [Paul Gallagher-managed no-hopers]. I mean, Jesus Christ, Performance! We were so obviously the best band there, but I think it was some kind of publicity stunt.”
Brian: “Actually, the story gets even more poignant. Peter Hook was on the judging panel and he slagged us off – he called us “a bunch of fucking whining Americans.” That really broke my heart – there’s few bands I like more that Joy Division [wipes away a mock tear]. Maybe Ian Curtis would’ve appreciated us more. Nobody’s ever looked into the abyss as deeply as him.”

๐Ÿ”ถ๐Ÿ๐Ÿ‘. ๐’๐๐„๐€๐Š๐„๐‘
“This got us into terrible trouble with the neighbours. These speakers are awesome – they go up so loud you could kill a cat with them. So when we got the first copies of the album in, we couldn’t resist using them. The chorus of ‘Teenage Angst’ was unbelievable, just raw noise bouncing around the walls.”

Dear soulmates, today I want to invite you to an interview that ๐๐ซ๐ข๐š๐ง ๐Œ๐จ๐ฅ๐ค๐จ did before a concert in Leicester as part of their Loud Like Love Tour in the UK in March 2015.
Brian admits his reluctance to tolerate fans watching a live concert through the screens of their cell phones, and also devotes a few words to an earlier edition of "Selected," which we know is a book containing lyrics to Brian's songs.

๐Ÿ“Œ Brian Molko has a morning of interviews lined up, back-to-back, writes Gemma Peplow. "My favourite part of the job," he says, dryly.

⭐ Brian isn't so much prickly as honest. Which is good. You wouldn't want tried-and-tested PR spiel from the frontman of Placebo, would you? Just for good measure, when we ask how the rest of his day might get better:
"That's my business, not yours."
Moving on, then. Placebo, one of the alternative rock bands of the '90s, whose bitter, cynical lyrics soundtracked the lives of thousands, are touring the UK. After shifting millions of albums and playing bigger venues across the world, this one is kind of back to basics.

๐Ÿ”ธ "We haven't done a regional UK tour in a long time so it feels like we're very much going back to our roots," says Brian.
"We're playing smaller venues, with a more intimate kind of energy with the audience. We do try to make an emotional connection with the audience. It's not just about playing songs.
We want to create a collective euphoria, a synergy. We need that connection, otherwise it becomes mechanical and soulless for us.
In a smaller venue, that energy comes quicker; the connection is a little easier to make – as long as not too many people are busy looking at their phones instead of the gig."

⭐ While Placebo's music has stood the test of time – the band are 20 years and six albums down the line from their self-titled debut – Brian is not convinced by this change in gig crowds.
"I think it's a shame because what they're documenting is inferior," he says. "They're missing the moment completely."
"Placebo play very loud – the microphone on your smart device cannot handle the volume at which we play. The sound, will be terribly distorted, because people moving around are going to be shaky. You're going to miss out on what you pay good money to see. I just don't get it.
Every now and then some idiot shows up with an iPad and just blocks the view for about five or six people behind them."

Photo vredit. Felix Kรคstle

๐Ÿ”ธ "It's completely inconsiderate, in my opinion. It's just my point of view, really, I don't want to come across like a grumpy old man. But I want to achieve connection and I can't connect with people who aren't looking at me. It's not an ego thing. It just seems pointless. What value does that have? I think life is short, the moment is fleeting, the gig is happening."

⭐ Be warned. If you pull out filming equipment when Placebo come to Leicester later this month, Brian may well pull you up on it.
"I do, sometimes. Sometimes it's not so bad, but if I find it frustrating I will, particularly if the entire front row when you walk out is looking at a phone from the moment the first song begins. On a good day, it's distracting; on a bad day, I actually find it quite insulting."

๐Ÿ”ธ "If I get frustrated, it's difficult. I deal with it, just as I would if a fight breaks out in the audience. I have a unique vantage point and it is incredibly disturbing to see the hatred in these people's eyes sometimes. It affects me emotionally."
It's very different to the days when the band formed.

⭐ "In the '90s, people were connected, they were jumping, moshing, crowd-surfing. They were in the moment and just there and absorbing the show and this is how I experienced concerts as a teenager and young adult.
They were mesmeric, transcendental moments for me. I don't understand why people wouldn't want to join me in that."
Having said all that, Brian says he enjoys it more now than he did way back when the band was at the height of its success, "because now I perform without the aid of any controlled substances or intoxicants."

๐Ÿ”ธ "We're choosing to do this tour for the fans and for ourselves. For the experience. To have fun. We want to enjoy ourselves." /¤¤¤/

⭐ You get the impression Brian isn't one for looking back. And yet, last year he released a book containing his own selection of lyrics from throughout his career at the helm of the band.
"It was offered to me by a small publishing house and it was a long, drawn-out process for me because I have a very dysfunctional relationship with a lot of what I've written. Not many people get an opportunity to publish a book, though, so that was the attraction.
But I tell you, it was not an easy experience for me. It took about six months. I had to select what was going to be published and I was confronted with a lot of writing which I thought was either naive, amateuristic or just not very good."

๐Ÿ”ธ It's better now, he says. "I wrote a lot of material under the influence and I think sometimes that worked out really well and sometimes it worked out really badly," he says. "I'm just very, very self-critical."

⭐ "We always set the bar higher, that's just something we do. Each new album is an almost allergic reaction to its predecessor."
๐‘€๐‘Ž๐‘Ÿ๐‘โ„Ž 2015)๐Ÿ“Œ
⭐๐Ÿ”ธ๐Ÿ”ธ๐Ÿ”ธ⭐

After reading such an interview, there are a lot of questions, don't you think?
๐Ÿ’š The first one is - to use these technologies at the concerts or not?
๐Ÿ’š Is it okay to shoot someone on the mobile phone who does not want it?
๐Ÿ’š And how do we explain to Brian our hypocrisy that we have an understanding for his feelings, but we really enjoy rare footage from concerts that have no official record?
How much poorer would we be if we didn't have YouTube full of videos from Placebo fans?

And so that your thinking is not so easy, I share with you a few videos from the British part of this amazing tour.
But beware - the first video is angry Brian throwing himself at a fan with a video camera ... So we all know that he perceives it really emotionally.

The single version of “Bruise Pristine“ was recorded at Westland Studios in Dublin when Placebo were working on their first studio album with producer Brad Wood.
In its original version the song was released as split single with the band Soup by record label Fierce Panda in October 1995. It was then re-recorded for Placebo's self-titled debut album the following year and finally became the fifth and last single off “Placebo” in May 1997.
”Bruise Pristine” is a heavy riff-based track. It is notable for its "behind the bridge" guitar solo. The song is played in F-A-D-G-C-C tuning.

“Bruise Pristine“ has a special meaning to Stefan because it was the first time he ever heard himself getting played on the radio (for Brian it was “36 degrees“). But unfortunately the DJ played it at the wrong speed because he thought the voice was too high for a guy.

The official video for the song was directed by Howard Greenhalgh who had already worked with stars like Elton John, Pet Shop Boys, INXS, George Michael or Soundgarden before he got in touch with Placebo. Over the years Greenhalgh directed seven of the band's official videos. Starting with the music clips for ”Nancy Boy” and ”Bruise Pristine” he was also responsible for ”Special K”, ”Slave to the wage”, ”The bitter end”, ”For what it's worth” and ”This Picture”.
When asked by a journalist to describe his approach to music video direction Howard Greenhalgh explained that "With anything, it’s the lyrics that are everything. You pray that there are good lyrics in a track because that leads you immediately to what you’re going to do."
Obviously Placebo's lyrics were great because he perfectly knew how to translate them into some extraordinary and impressive videos.

Brian and especially Stefan are huge fans of Depeche Mode. That's one of the reasons why they covered the song “I feel you” at a very early stage of their career. It was first published on a casette available only for members of the Placebo fan club Silver Rocket in 1999. The song was officially released on a bonus disc as part of the “Sleeping with ghosts” Special edition in 2003. This extra CD was then re-released as regular album “Covers” in 2010. “I feel you” can also be found on the American edition of “Black market music”.

English artist Dave Gahan was born as David Callcott on May 9th 1962. When he was only six months old his father left the family. After the divorce his mother Sylvia married her second husband Jack Gahan. Dave and his sister Sue were raised under the impression that he was their natural father.
In his youth he got into trouble with the police, was suspended from school and ended up in juvenile court several times. “I was pretty wild, but music saved me“, Dave stated in hindsight.

In spring 1980 he joined the new formed band Composition of Sound. It was soon renamed to Depeche Mode, a suggestion that came from Dave after he had come across a same-titled fashion magazine. This was the start of an incredible successful career. Up to now Depeche Mode have sold more than 100 million records. Dave Gahan has also released some solo albums and collaborations with other artists.

He is a recovering heroin addict. In 1996 Dave Gahan overdosed on a speedball (mixture of cocaine and heroin) which resulted in his heart stopping for two minutes and a near-dead experience before he was revived by paramedics. Several months later he sought help at a rehabilitation center. There were relapses, but in May 2011 he celebrated ten years of sobriety. Dave said about his drug addiction that "it's fun to party and I had a lot of fun, and I kind of used up all my chips in that department." In 2009 an ultrasound revealed a malignant tumor in his bladder, which was removed.

Dave has lived in New York City since 1997. He has a daughter with his third wife Jennifer and a son from a former marriage.

The shared photo of Stefan and Dave Gahan was taken in London at the TV show Top of the Pops on January 31st 1997. Placebo performed their no. 4 single “Nancy Boy” and Depeche Mode did “Barrel of a gun”.
Stefan said that he was “tripping on cloud nine” when he got the chance to meet his heroes backstage. “This band has had a massive influence on me musically and personally. I spent my awkward teens covering their songs and turning the lights off in my room to immerse myself in their latest release”, he explained.

๐๐ซ๐ข๐š๐ง: Yes, exactly. It's true that in the 80s it was very boring in Luxembourg. Me and Stefan, our reaction was to lock ourselves in our rooms listening to lots of music and learning to play instruments. The idea of escaping that boredom pushed us to have this determination of doing something artistic with our lives. But we were separated. We were in the same country, going to the same school, but we weren't friends. So our lives were quite similar and when we found each other in London by accident, voila!

I moved to London when I was 17 and went to a University there to study dramatic arts which was my first passion, and only after finishing my studies I made the decision to make music. But I think that our motivation was the fact that the idea of doing the same routine threw us in such a depressive state that is was really important to us to make something artistic with our lives.

B: Yes, it's an incredible country. I really like Asia in general, and, yes, before Meds, the last album, I spent some time there, like Beach Bum, and it's really a cool place, a country of colors, of extremes. I think that human traffic is something very shocking and without excuse in a so called civilized, modern, advanced world. We try to show people what needs to be avoided, so they don't fall into the trap. Because it's mostly adolescents and adults from Asia and Eastern Europe who are in danger.

Dear friends, today I invite you to one of the most beautiful and exceptional festivals in Europe.
The EXIT Festival, which takes place in the Serbian city of Novi Sad, fascinated me with its amazing history - its origin.

๐Ÿ“Œ ๐…๐„๐’๐“๐ˆ๐•๐€๐‹ ๐ˆ๐๐…๐Ž:
"From its beginnings as a protest against the Milosevic regime, EXIT has grown into one of the biggest music festivals in Europe.
EXIT is more than that though – it is a festival that traditionally has a political message at heart and whilst this is not why the majority of about 200,000 people come together and celebrate four days on Novi Sad’s Petrovaradin fortress, the festival organisers still like to emphasise the importance of civil activism with the presence of many NGO’s and international organisations.
That year, thousands of students from Novi Sad gathered on the university campus close to the river Danube to hear local bands and DJs perform and to listen to speakers voicing their opinions about the regime that had isolated them from the rest of Europe for the past decade. The event lasted 100 days and finished off with a party and a call for all the young people of Serbia to go and vote in the elections that were to be held the following day – the day which led to the downfall of the Milosevic regime.
The success gave the team behind the initial demonstrations the impetus to organise it as a festival in the true sense of the word and 2001 saw the first EXIT festival in the format we celebrate it today – in the grounds of the Petrovaradin Fortress with a stunning view over the Danube and Novi Sad’s skyline.
In 2001 the festival lasted nine days and people still recount the mind-blowing performance that Roni Size gave back then in front of thousands of people. One of the biggest signs of progress back then was that Croatian artists came to play at the festival. These days, Croatian bands such as Lollobrigida are some of the most popular acts for the locals at the festival and it would be hard to imagine the event without them. In 2003 the festival was shortened to the present four day format.
In 2004 MTV became involved in the festival and BBC’s Radio 1 covered EXIT in 2005 and the event has become much more commercial, raising the hackles of some of the festival goers from the early years. But a more commerical outlook has led to continuous improvement of the festival line-up and diversification of the musical genres represented.
This year’s festival (2010) has one of the best line-ups of any European festival and there’s enough for fans of any music genre to get exited about."๐Ÿ“Œ

Fans of the festival could really enjoy this year - in addition to Placebo, there were for example a brilliant LCD Soundsystem (you may remember that this is one of Placebo's favorite friendly bands and certainly Brian enjoyed their concert) and also Finnish charismatic singer Mika, the band Faith No More, The Chemicals Brothers and many others …

And yet I must not forget to mention - ๐Œ๐“๐• ๐„๐ฑ๐ข๐ญ - does this name mean anything to you?
Yes, it's a charity founded under the banner of MTV, and it's the one that brought us awareness of human trafficking and sexual slavery in Cambodia. A wonderful concert at Angkor Wat was the work of this organization.

MTV has also been one of the main promoters of social activism with their presence at EXIT festival. When the music television station started to host its own stage at EXIT, it also teamed up with the festival organisers to promote work of the MTV Europe Foundation, raising awareness on human rights issues in Serbia and the whole region. The work of Non Governmental Organisations is an important component of the festival and there will be a raft of organisations at the event hoping to promote social awareness amongst festival goers.๐Ÿ“Œ

Yes, dear soulmate, music unites people all over the world and it is beautiful to use it for such purposes as enlightening about atrocities that should no longer exist in the 21st century ... Don't you think?

There is one very nice interview from this festival, which was given to reporters by our beloved Sunshine Steve:

๐‘ซ๐’ ๐’š๐’๐’– ๐’Œ๐’๐’๐’˜ ๐’”๐’๐’Ž๐’†๐’•๐’‰๐’Š๐’๐’ˆ ๐’‚๐’ƒ๐’๐’–๐’• ๐‘ฌ๐‘ฟ๐‘ฐ๐‘ป?
"From promoter we heard many nice things about the festival. I can’t really say how the whole EXIT story started, but I do know it began from real reasons, that at the beginning there were no big sponsors and, all in all, that music is most important. And that is what makes this festival so special, many told us that before we came. Because of it all we’re proud to be here and I’m sure we will enjoy it in Novi Sad. And the location! It’s really fantastic. I love to play at such original places which is better and more interesting then a gig at some field. Fortresses are remembered because everything around you is unusual."

"Yes, baptism of fire! They wanted to break me down and then ‘rebuild’ me again. And they did it. Of course, there were moments when I was pissed and I let those things to annoy me. But on that way I became stronger and I was more ready that from drummer of a small band I suddenly get into a world of big celebrities. If there wasn’t Brian’s and Stefan’s “treatment” I don’t think I would survive these three years."

"Brian and Stefan always try to find some new sound, they already used electronic, experimented with guitar sound… And then there was a question: what now? Then Brian came up with the idea to use wind instruments, but it was complicated to match the sound because we didn’t want those to repress other instruments. But it was fun and we had great time while recording it. Because of it all record sounds powerful and different."

You have to try to do something new, exciting and fresh with the band's sound and play with the band's conceived identity, but at the same time not disregarding what makes you uniquely 'you'.”

As far as longevity is concerned, I think if you look at the careers of the likes of The Cure or Depeche Mode - I use those examples because they both released albums this year, 30 years into their career - well they've made music, since day one, purely on their own terms, unaffected, unconcerned by trends, movements and fashion in music. They followed their own path and stuck to their guns, and I think that's why they're still making records which are still worthwhile listening. We're 15 years in, and that's where I'd like to be in another 15. It's not like we have any other options; we're basically unemployable, you know, so this is it.”

๐Ÿ“ข “I started looking back on my career around the time of Meds [fifth studio album, released in 2006]. As a lyricist I thought I was using a great deal of gimmicks. For example, the whole chemistry/medicine cabinet routine that is Commercial for Levi or a song title that screams 'Look at Me!' that is Nancy Boy! I made a decision that I wanted to stop using gimmicks and address the bigger questions in more everyday language where possible, and try and simplify it, I suppose. ๐Ÿ“ข “Everybody who writes wants to write stuff that's timeless and doesn't date, really. I think you have to be very careful if you want to do that. You have to tap into the spirit of the age but at the same time write something that transcends it. I don't think that using incredibly culturally specific language enables you to do that. So, I'm trying to transcend that and write something that can stand up to the music that I grew up listening to. Take Leonard Cohen, for example. There's a universality in his music and a simplicity which makes it appreciable and meaningful in any decade, any century really. I think that's what I'm trying to do, hopefully in some way making a difference.”

๐Ÿ“ข “It's good to have an intelligent person running one of the most powerful countries and someone who generally cares. I'm less sympathetic towards the economic problems that exist right now than some people might be, because I have never been able to understand the whole culture of living beyond your means. I mean, I've been unemployed for a long time, I've been homeless, I've slept in train stations and I didn't spend money that didn't belong to me. So I find it difficult to be incredibly sympathetic with the culture of avarice that has got us into this position.
The other thing that annoys me about this whole focus on our economic woes is that nobody is talking about the environment anymore, and if anything is going to get us in the ass, it's going to be that. The hole in the ozone layer is still there, 20 years after they discovered it, and it's getting bigger and bigger, yet this isn't news. I want to be involved in the world. I think it comes from being a parent; you want to try and contribute to make a place for your children to grow up in that's hopefully a little bit better than where you were. Unfortunately, it seems that we are heading straight towards some form of environmental armaggeddon, and perhaps we deserve to go the same way as the dinosaurs for our treatment of the planet.”
