English artist Dave Gahan was born as David Callcott on May 9th 1962. When he was only six months old his father left the family. After the divorce his mother Sylvia married her second husband Jack Gahan. Dave and his sister Sue were raised under the impression that he was their natural father.
In his youth he got into trouble with the police, was suspended from school and ended up in juvenile court several times. “I was pretty wild, but music saved me“, Dave stated in hindsight.
In spring 1980 he joined the new formed band Composition of Sound. It was soon renamed to Depeche Mode, a suggestion that came from Dave after he had come across a same-titled fashion magazine. This was the start of an incredible successful career. Up to now Depeche Mode have sold more than 100 million records. Dave Gahan has also released some solo albums and collaborations with other artists.
He is a recovering heroin addict. In 1996 Dave Gahan overdosed on a speedball (mixture of cocaine and heroin) which resulted in his heart stopping for two minutes and a near-dead experience before he was revived by paramedics. Several months later he sought help at a rehabilitation center. There were relapses, but in May 2011 he celebrated ten years of sobriety. Dave said about his drug addiction that "it's fun to party and I had a lot of fun, and I kind of used up all my chips in that department." In 2009 an ultrasound revealed a malignant tumor in his bladder, which was removed.
Dave has lived in New York City since 1997. He has a daughter with his third wife Jennifer and a son from a former marriage.

The shared photo of Stefan and Dave Gahan was taken in London at the TV show Top of the Pops on January 31st 1997. Placebo performed their no. 4 single “Nancy Boy” and Depeche Mode did “Barrel of a gun”.
Stefan said that he was “tripping on cloud nine” when he got the chance to meet his heroes backstage. “This band has had a massive influence on me musically and personally. I spent my awkward teens covering their songs and turning the lights off in my room to immerse myself in their latest release”, he explained.

“I met Dave Gahan after Top oft he Pops once and then met him again two weeks later in Paris when we were doing a gig with the Dreams (=Dream City Film Club). We all ended up in the lobby oft he most expensive hotel in Paris with me playing Depeche Mode songs very off the key on the piano. Martin then asked me to play David Bowie songs which I couldn’t play.“
