๐Ÿ”ธ To promote the release of Loud Like Love, ๐‘ฉ๐’“๐’Š๐’‚๐’ was the guest of ๐‘ท๐’–๐’“๐’† ๐‘ญ๐‘ด, a Belgian radio station, on the September 16th, 2013.

An interesting interview where Brian speaks warmly about his youth, his views on his younger self, Placebo's aesthetics, songs meaning, the writing process. ๐ŸŒ

Enjoy this intimate and smooth moment ๐Ÿ˜Š

๐Ÿ“ข Yes, maybe, but at the same time we don't know what to do, that's the problem. It's more and more difficult to renew first, and we're always afraid of repeating ourselves. Some repetitions are inevitable because we have our own style. For me, when I have the tune, in front of this blank sheet, I always have this kind of panic in me. I tell myself 'what do I have to say ? What do I have to tell the world ?' I am not the kind of person who writes thing in an intellectual way. I let myself go with instinct. It's rather the writing process which influences the topics, the emotions of the song. It's more and more difficult maybe because I put more and more value in it.

๐Ÿ“ข Because I'm a bit more conscious of the fact that ... Well.. let's say I less believe in my own legend. When you are young, you're very arrogant, you are strongly self confident. With time, it erodes a bit. You ask yourself more questions and you get more of an identity crisis. For me, it becomes another value, a bigger one. I may be too conscious about the missed opportunities in the past. So I push myself more... I am very critical, self critical of things I would have let go before, I fnd it harder these days. So, I have this process of writing, and re-writing, and re-writing. And it often ends at the last moment when you have to finish the album. 'You don't have no more time Brian so write something'. Sometimes a deadline can help.

๐Ÿ“ข Because of this arrogance and this huge self-confidence, I thought when I was younger, that everything I wrote was a masterpiece Now, with hindsight , I realize it's not a fact. ๐Ÿ“ข Well, no... No, I haven't thought about that until now. It's the same with 'Rob The Bank' on the new album. After the recording, someone told me : 'It reminds me of โ€˜Follow The Cops Back Home and rob their houses' . I told myself : 'Oh damn, I haven't thought about that'. 'A Million Little Pieces', 'We Come In Pieces', It's not a conscious connection I've made. I have stolen this title from a book by an American writer, James Frey, who wrote a sort of fictionalized essay about his life, about his huge addiction issues. Our song is quite abstract but I wanted to make this connection with this book in order to people, after they listen to this song 'A Million Little Pieces', go and read that book and open their mind and could give context to the song.

Even though we've used lots of electronic instruments on that album, we've used piano a lot and also Indian instruments like dulcimer for example, lots of chords. For me... Yeah, after 'Battle For The Sun', which was a strong guitar album, kind of a guitar wall, I wanted to do something more delicate, more melancholic, with a human side. A sort of melancholy which makes you proud of the fact you can still feel this melancholy. A sort of happy sadness. This is the kind of music, since I've discovered artists like Leonard Cohen who has moved me throughout my life. Songs that make me cry but still make me happy that I am an emotional being and can cry this way.

๐Ÿ“ข It's very interesting because it's the first album where we have used our phones, our ipad as instruments in the studio. There was this kind of childish joy because you can find something on the app store, it takes one minute to get it and you can begin playing. Because of the interface, it gives a childish joy because it's like a toy. It has become something really important on this album, and there's also this hyper human essence of the hands clapping. It gives you an idea of the scope of the sound and instrumentation we wanted to use in the sound of Placebo for this album. Yeah, a sort of democratic posture towards everything. A sort of open-mindedness too.

๐Ÿ“ข It's important to be surrounded by people who are much younger than you are and who understand the whole thing much better than you do and who know how to use the social networks, etc etc. It makes everyday life quite easier in the creation process. You can make a song at home and send it to someone. You spend less time in the studio, getting bored. The producer can send you mixes, things to listen to. It's important to stress because all this technology won't write a song for you. You always need the human touch to give soul to something. Even when you're using an ipad, it's the human touch which controls everything. With this tool, it's rather the accident which is magical. The fact it's brand new, you don't really know how to use it, we often use it the bad way and through these accidents, you can create something magical.

๐Ÿ“ข Aesthetically speaking, I wanted to stop with the Placebo aesthetic which was well established, a physical aesthetic, very figurative and quite monochrome. My first musical crush was psychedelic music. I wanted to do something with all the covers. Something quite psychedelic and use the 60's, the 70's, the 80's and the 90's altogether with all the formats, etc. These pictures are quite psychedelic as if it was seen through an old tv set or so. We're still touring, I don't know what's going to happen after that, but we're musicians and as musicians we can't retire, because a musician can't stop. Maybe you don't do it the same way, maybe you stop touring, but you can't retire. So far Brian and I have been together for 20 years but I don't feel like stopping, so if we add that up, I think there's going to be more Placebo music.

There's a lot of music to discover, and that's like the most important thing there is, to have artists that influence you. In Placebo we do what is true for us, and I think we are here after 20 years because we have followed our very unique vision, and to have faith that what we are doing, is something that comes from the heart. As a musician, as artists who are still doing that, it's easier for the public to identify with, and me as a music fan, I have other bands that I identify with. Of course, you've talked about Prince and David Bowie who are not here but still live on in the atmosphere, on the internet, because everything is there, for the visual, the audio as well. I don't know if we are a band for people who don't identify with the mainstream, but it's great, because music can be your best friend, and if we can have that role for people, I'm really happy.โœช

In 2013 NME invited Brian to take part in a quiz series titled โ€œDoes Rock'n'Roll kill brain cells?โ€ in which the magazine โ€œtested musicians memories after a life full of abuseโ€. Brian participated and was asked ten question concerning Placebo.
What do you think how many questions did he answer correctly? And what would your result be in this quiz?

Getting some โ€˜behind the scenesโ€™ info is always interesting, isnโ€™t it? Would you like to know what Placebo guys preferred to eat while on tour (back in 2010 at least; now things might change, of course)?
Recently, I found a nice and funny ๐‘จ๐‘น๐‘ป๐‘ฐ๐‘ช๐‘ณ๐‘ฌ that was published in Ukrainian newspaper right after Placeboโ€™s concert in Kyiv, Ukraine, on September 18th, 2010. Enjoy!

Placebo are currently touring around the world with their new album, Battle For The Sun, out in June. Musicians arrived in Kyiv two days before the concert. And all this time, they just walked around the city.
As it became known to "Komsomolskaya Pravda", in the rider, the members of the band hadnโ€™t demanded anything impossible. Oatmeal, eggs, bacon, fried sausages, bread, muffins, tea, coffee, and juice, for breakfast. Fresh vegetable salads, soup, meat or fish dishes, for dinner before the concert. Musicians wanted to complete that with three bottles of red and white wine (for the lead vocalist Molko), three packages of beer and four large bottles of Absolute vodka (for all the others).

Frontman Brian Molko wrote down his requests separately: a liter of soy milk, two liters of cranberry juice, muesli, fried chicken, bananas, tangerines, clementines, grapes, apples, and ... a can of pickled cucumbers! โ€œWe will be happy to try local food but please, let us know in advance what may be offered as we donโ€™t eat any garbage - no dogs, no guinea pigs, no snakes or cats!โ€ - here is an excerpt from the list of the bandโ€™s requirements

According to the number of fans at the concert, the band have been eagerly awaited in Kyiv. Placebo played here for the first time in 2007 and promised theyโ€™d come back. They say, one waits three years for the promised.

An overwhelming show lasted almost an hour and a half. The band played 19 songs interspersing new tracks with old hits. "Thank you, Placebo!" fans shouted as the rockers took a bow.
Interestingly, after the performance, the band members also attended an afterparty held in their honor in one of the city clubs. Although, Brian Molko wasnโ€™t there โ€“ at that time, he was sleeping in his hotel room.

It's a good coincidence: while the Lucerna cinema is screening another film from the gay, lesbian, bisexual and trans film festival on Wednesday night, the British band Placebo will be performing at the Lucerna Grand Hall at the same time. The trio, which with its similarly stylized lyrics and the specific character of frontman Brian Molko, has been one of the prominent names of the British alternative rock scene for almost twenty years.

They do not provoke as before.
Forty-year-old "daddy" Brian can easily be blamed for repetition and homestead on this year's album Loud Like Love. But it's still true that Placebo is a band that you only have to listen to once, and you'll always know them reliably.
I talked to their youngest member, California drummer Steve Forrest.

"I was in a band called Evaline and we supported Placebo three times. When I left Evaline in early 2007 and some time later learned that Placebo was looking for a drummer, I sent a small excerpt of my performances to their management. I guess I impressed them a lot (laughs)."

"You know it's a good song if you can strip it down to a complete skeletal form and play it on one instrument. At least a guitar or a piano and a voice and it still comes across then you know it's a good song. You can write a song and you have to wait six years for it to actually be recorded and mixed and it still completely levels you. The song was written by ๐‘ฉ๐’“๐’Š๐’‚๐’ and his friend ๐‘ท๐’‚๐’–๐’ ๐‘ช๐’‚๐’Ž๐’‘๐’Š๐’๐’, lead singer of ๐€๐‚ ๐€๐œ๐จ๐ฎ๐ฌ๐ญ๐ข๐œ๐ฌ. When asked who the song was about, ๐‘ฉ๐’“๐’Š๐’‚๐’ replied in his typical ironic style
โ€œWho's it about? I'm not really too sure just yet. I think it's about a lot of people. Probably anybody... everybody who's had the displeasure of sleeping with me. (laughs) I want to stress that I said displeasure there.โ€ (laughs)

Along with the rest of the album (apart from Pure Morning), Every You Every Me was recorded in early 1998 at Real World Studios with Steve Osborne.

The single managed to chart at number 11 on the UK Singles Chart, number 46 in Australia, and number 99 in Germany.

It was voted from a poll of 500,000 votes to be ranked number 83 on the list of the Hottest 100 of All Time in July 2009, conducted by Australian radio station Triple J.

Croatian metal band ๐‘จ๐’”๐’‰๐’†๐’” ๐’€๐’๐’– ๐‘ณ๐’†๐’‚๐’—๐’† covered Every You Every Me on their 2009 album Songs of the Lost. and in 2017, ๐‘ณ๐’Š๐’”๐’‚ ๐‘ด๐’Š๐’•๐’„๐’‰๐’†๐’๐’ covered the song on her EP When They Play That Song.

This song was the theme tune to the film โ€˜Cruel Intentionsโ€™, which was โ€˜Les Liaisons Dangereusesโ€™ transported to Upper West Side of New York. Itโ€™s a teen film. Thereโ€™s another version where they intercut it with parts from the film. Even though Iโ€™m wearing a rather fetching John Richmond dress, which cost a lot of money, I still look silly. Itโ€™s one of my many fashion crimes I was guilty of early in our career.
This videoโ€™s also a bit of a cop-out, because we made another video, which didnโ€™t involve performance. It was about twins and never got released. It was banned by management. So we had to pull one together from footage that weโ€™d filmed at Brixton Academy.โ€

Brian said this in an interview with ๐‘ฝ๐’Š๐’“๐’ˆ๐’Š๐’ ๐‘น๐’‚๐’…๐’Š๐’ ๐‘ฐ๐’•๐’‚๐’๐’Š๐’‚ during the promotion of ๐‘ณ๐’๐’–๐’… ๐‘ณ๐’Š๐’Œ๐’† ๐‘ณ๐’๐’—๐’†, answering to the question: "๐‘Šโ„Ž๐‘Ž๐‘ก'๐‘  ๐‘กโ„Ž๐‘’ ๐‘ ๐‘๐‘Ž๐‘Ÿ๐‘–๐‘’๐‘ ๐‘ก ๐‘Ž๐‘‘๐‘‘๐‘–๐‘๐‘ก๐‘–๐‘œ๐‘› ?". It's no longer a secret ! Addiction is a subject that is close to ๐‘ƒ๐‘™๐‘Ž๐‘๐‘’๐‘๐‘œ's heart and Brian has often spoken about it in his lyrics since the beginning of the band's career.

๐Ÿ“ Going further in the interview, he speaks his words:

๐Ÿ’ฌ I think the scariest addiction on this planet is to alcohol because alcohol is a very addictive drug and it ruins families and it ruins relationships. And it is socially acceptable and it is easy to find. Controlled substances, other drugs are more difficult to get. And it's a crime to buy them. And if you are unfortunate enough to become addicted to it, it can be disastrous. And there is still An addict is perceived as being somebody of weak moral fiber. But the fact of the matter is that the World Health Organization has classified addiction as a disease and there are statistics on this. On the planet, on average, one person out of ten is addicted to something, whether it's alcohol, illegal drugs, sugar, sex, pornography... The list goes on and on and on and on. And I don't believe that until we take this stigma away from it that people can really get the help that they need. Because ๐‘–๐‘ก'๐‘  ๐‘Ž ๐‘‘๐‘–๐‘ ๐‘’๐‘Ž๐‘ ๐‘’ ๐‘™๐‘–๐‘˜๐‘’ ๐‘Ž๐‘›๐‘ฆ ๐‘œ๐‘กโ„Ž๐‘’๐‘Ÿ ๐‘‘๐‘–๐‘ ๐‘’๐‘Ž๐‘ ๐‘’. If somebody gets cancer, nobody goes: "Hey it's your fault man". And it's exactly the same thing with addiction. We have a a comedian and an actor in the UK called He's quite famous and ๐Ÿ“– In his documentary, Brand challenges the system currently in use to treat addicts in Britain. His passionate, honest and eye-opening opinions on what needs to change is captivating. When Amy Winehouse died, a friend of his at the time, he realized he needed to stop taking drugs. He was told that if he kept up his lifestyle of daily drug use he would either be dead, in jail or in an insane asylum within 6 months. By the time he was 27, the same age Amy Winehouse died, Russell Brand was clean.

The method he took was an abstinence program. It worked for him but as we find out, only 10% of addicts are treated this way. Instead, the root of the issue is ignored and the government prescribes methadone to the addicts instead of drugs such as heroin and this way they are taking a legal drug with a prescribed amount. As Brand argues, this is not making the addicts any less of addicts just because they are now on a legal government authorized drug. In fact, addicts will always crave a high and therefore the prescribed amount of methadone will simply keep them too stable; addicts are going to continue taking their drugs. Though methadone is supposed to stop needle use and lower HIV from being spread, it is not addressing the true disease and condition that is addiction. Addiction should be being addressed as a health issue not a judicial or criminal issue. Russell Brand talks to a scientist who is leading research into the brain and how it relates and is affected by addiction. He also talks to doctors and addicts themselves giving us an in depth look at addiction. ๐Ÿ“•

On this day 27 years ago, ๐‰๐š๐ง๐ฎ๐š๐ซ๐ฒ ๐Ÿ๐Ÿ‘๐ซ๐, ๐Ÿ๐Ÿ—๐Ÿ—๐Ÿ“, Placebo played their first headlining show at the Rock Garden Club in London.
There are just a few pictures of the band taken on that day, so the one you can see below is quite precious.

โญThe ๐‘๐Ž๐‚๐Š ๐†๐€๐‘๐ƒ๐„๐ ๐‚๐‹๐”๐ is one of the legendary music venues on Londonโ€™s map that is gone but not forgotten.

It was located at The Piazza in ๐‘ช๐’๐’—๐’†๐’๐’• ๐‘ฎ๐’‚๐’“๐’…๐’†๐’. Over 30,000 bands have performed live on stage since it opened in 1978. U2 and The Smiths played their first London gigs here. Dire Straits had a weekly residency at the club for a few months and bands such as Iron Maiden, The Police, XTC, Adam and The Ants, Suede have played on its stage. A number of unsigned regional bands also performed here, hoping to attract the interest of record companies.

The Rock Garden had a busy diary, with gigs on most nights; however, by the 1990s it had become a nightclub called The Gardening Club which after all, closed its doors on December 31st, 2008.

The building is today home to an Apple Store.

๐Ÿ“ By the beginning of 1995, Placebo had a handful of songs in their repertoire to complete the show. However, it was 9 months before Placebo released an original version of Bruise Pristine as a split single (their very first!) with the band Soup by record label Fierce Panda in October 1995.

๐Ÿ“When it comes to a ๐‘บ๐‘ฌ๐‘ป๐‘ณ๐‘ฐ๐‘บ๐‘ป of Placeboโ€™s first concert, there may be kind of a misunderstanding. What is available in the internet, is the same setlist that Stefan once mentioned to be a setlist of their very first gig together with Brian as a two-piece band in 1994. But in fact, those two setlists could be the same or very similar.

I think many of you wish you were at the Rock Garden back in 1995! To make you feel the atmosphere of the concert, I collected those very old Placebo songs according to the supposed setlist for the night. Letโ€™s enjoy the show!

One of the most recognised voices in rock music, Brian Molkoโ€™s notoriously poetic rhymes are characterised by blister-blue moods, bondage and angelic assassinations. Using Placeboโ€™s most definitive lyrics from some of their most famous songs as an inception point, we speak to Molko prior to his Hard Rock Hotel performance on September 12.

How has the technological revolution affected Placebo?
๐Ÿ“ข "โ€˜Too Many Friendsโ€™ is a song thatโ€™s often misunderstood. It uses technology as a metaphor for loneliness. Sometimes Iโ€™m misconstrued as a Luddite because of the song, when nothing could be further from the truth. Iโ€™m fascinated by technology. Eventually somebody was going to write about social networks and loneliness, so it was a driving force for me to get in first. If a person bumps into a lamppost because they are texting and walking at the same time, the phone is not to blame but the person himself."

Which Placebo line holds the most significance?
๐Ÿ“ข "The one youโ€™ve chosen is a fine example as it is a direct message to our fans. In song and on stage I speak my truth, but I have no delusions of grandeur that mine is absolute. Thereโ€™s enough ambiguity in my writing for our fans to find their own stories in our songs. I also really like the line: โ€œWe can build a new tomorrow, today,โ€ from โ€˜Speak In Tonguesโ€™. I sincerely believe itโ€™s a call to arms to build a more tolerant future. But the change has to start within ourselves first; we all have the choice to live our lives with more compassion and kindness. I see it as karma โ€“ the more you give selflessly, the more comes back your way.

Iโ€˜m looking forward to getting an insiderโ€™s tour of the island. I wonder if weโ€™ll bump into James Blunt!"
In addition to our published interview with Placebo's frontman Brian Molko, he talks to us exclusively here about writing their latest album 'Loud Like Love'.
๐Ÿ“ข"'We never plan the tone of the album before writing it. The two main inspirations are a vociferous, almost allergic reaction to its predecessor โ€“ a clamorous desire to do the opposite โ€“ coupled with the process of writing itself. It is only about half way through the process that we begin to understand what the album is about. And since this process is instinctual, we find out what is really going on inside of ourselves on an emotional level'.
'The song I am most proud of is โ€˜๐๐จ๐ฌ๐œ๐จโ€™. It is the most honest and vulnerable I have ever been in a song, and though it is a sad and tragic story, it proves, to me at least, that there is the capacity for redemption and forgiveness in all of us. Due to its extremely personal nature it still brings a tear to my eye when I hear it, but it also gives me hope. Hope is important, we must never lose it'."
