It's a good coincidence: while the Lucerna cinema is screening another film from the gay, lesbian, bisexual and trans film festival on Wednesday night, the British band Placebo will be performing at the Lucerna Grand Hall at the same time. The trio, which with its similarly stylized lyrics and the specific character of frontman Brian Molko, has been one of the prominent names of the British alternative rock scene for almost twenty years.
They do not provoke as before.
Forty-year-old "daddy" Brian can easily be blamed for repetition and homestead on this year's album Loud Like Love. But it's still true that Placebo is a band that you only have to listen to once, and you'll always know them reliably.
I talked to their youngest member, California drummer Steve Forrest.

"I was in a band called Evaline and we supported Placebo three times. When I left Evaline in early 2007 and some time later learned that Placebo was looking for a drummer, I sent a small excerpt of my performances to their management. The next day my phone rings and it says, "Hi, this is Brian from Placebo." He asked me if I would be willing to come to London. I took my drumsticks and moved straight there.
I guess I impressed them a lot (laughs)."

"To be honest, I didn't know them at all. I listened to them for the first time when I went to a gig, what we were supposed to play with them. I played the record and thought the girl was singing in that band. Then I arrived and I was quite surprised."

"Yes, like it was yesterday. We were on tour, we had just arrived in Phoenix, parked behind the club and I started pulling out the drums.
When such a small, elegant man came here and gave me his slightly shaking hand in greeting. We started talking, I realized it would probably be a singer.
He spoke completely differently from the guys you commonly meet in California clubs: with a Scottish accent and at the same time very cultured. And so is Stefan. They were thirty, I nineteen. So my first impression was pubescent: Wow, these guys are really sophisticated!"

"Absolutely fine. I think it was good that I met them as the band from the joint concert in Phoenix.
If it were that I was joining a large group of which I was totally insane, who knew how we would find a way to each other.
But I was one of them right away."

"Then it would probably be Exit Wounds, it has an almost two-minute electronic intro in which Brian recites rather than sings. And then comes a sudden change: and this moment always kicks me. That's one of those moments why you make music. It's pure euphoria..." .../***/
