For me it is a very distant past... I was about twelve years old when my father, a big fan of popular music, got this record from friends, banned in our totalitarian Czechoslovakia. I saw it as a bright moment in our family, of which unfortunately there were not many.

My parents did not have a good relationship, they often argued. But while listening to this song, my mom would smile mysteriously and receive gentle eye contact from her husband. You could say that she melted like chocolate, and I still see it as one of the few very nice moments in the whole life of my parents.

Late one night in the winter of 1967, Gainsbourg and Bardot went into a dimly lit studio in Paris and recorded Michel Colombier's arrangement of Je T'Aime in an intimate two-hour session. The two singers were squashed into a small, steamy glass booth; engineer William Flageollet witnessed what he described as "๐˜ฉ๐˜ฆ๐˜ข๐˜ท๐˜บ ๐˜ฑ๐˜ฆ๐˜ต๐˜ต๐˜ช๐˜ฏ๐˜จ". ๐Ÿ”น๐Ÿ’ฌโ€žI wanted to have different views, different moods and different sorts of perversions on the album and that's why there are so many different people involved.โ€œ

That Dimitri is as persuasive as he's well-connected is clear from the characters he tracked down, who include Velvet Underground legend John Cale and Placebo singer Brian Molko. He also managed to seduce Italian sex siren Asia Argento into performing a version of โ€žJe T'Aimeโ€œ, though admits he didn't actually know her until she walked into the studio to lay down her part.

โ€žI had this idea of doing Je T'Aime because I've always loved the track, but my idea was to invert the characters roles,โ€œ says Dimitri.

โ€žIn the original track, Serge Gainsbourg is fucking Jane Birkin, he's doing the act of penetration and I wanted to invert the roles; to have Asia doing the role of penetrating someone else. Brian (Molko) said he would do it so I asked Asia by sending her an email. Immediately, she sent me an email back saying 'yeah, I really want to do it' so I flew to Italy to record her voice.

She was very nervous when she did it because she's not a singer and she didn't know what I was going to ask her to do, she was still shooting movies at the time,โ€œ he continues.

โ€žWe did it in a small room with a very basic recording set-up and I remember her chain smoking with me sitting in front of her. It was a little bit of a tense atmosphere but that was good for the track. She didn't know me, I didn't know her so it was a slightly bizarre environment.โ€œ

With Asia being generally acclaimed as one of the world's sexiest starlets, the resulting track is as salacious as Dimitri presumably hoped it would be, reflecting the overall highly polished standards of all 11 tracks on Positions. Musically, he's succeeded in tapping into the talents of all his various collaborators, to produce an album of punk, funk and electro songs that genuinely (and unusually, in this day and age) truly rocks.

๐ŸŸจIn 2016, when ranking Placebo records in the interview for Vice, ๐‘ฉ๐’“๐’Š๐’‚๐’ rated their third studio album ๐๐‹๐€๐‚๐Š ๐Œ๐€๐‘๐Š๐„๐“ ๐Œ๐”๐’๐ˆ๐‚ (2000) as his least favourite.

I guess I put it there because I think it's the record that suffers most from having a blanket sound. We do our best to not make records that do that. It's part of our modus operandi. But it also happens to be the first time we also had a number one album, and in typical Brian Molko style, I put it at the bottom. [Laughs] I think it's a real somber record, so it doesn't really conjure up euphoria, which I suppose is what I look for in music. It was recorded during the height of our party phase, and once we had recorded all of our instruments, we had turned the studio into a place to have guests. So we spent a lot of time entertaining people while our producer spent a lot of time working on the album alone. I think if we'd been a little more involved, then perhaps there would be a little more light and color. It's quite a monochrome album for me. It's a very deep wood color, with stripes of gunmetal grey when I picture it.

Yeah, and perhaps that's it. Perhaps the whole package is a little too gothic for me. I like to try and make an album with light and shade, and this one has the least.

๐ŸŸจAs you may guess, itโ€™s impossible that Placebo would choose a meaningless random image for their album cover. At the time I was squatting in an apartment in London and we didnโ€™t have any money or jobs. We got drunk one day and named each other off the top of our heads as a stupid romantic ode to the pop art scene, where they had all these fantastic names like Paul America. I named Alison with a sound, Vv. And she came up with Hotel because at that point my apartment was like a hotel for bands.

โ€ฆ/***/ Her eclectic career is both a testament to her malleable voice โ€” although known for a glitter-bluesy melodic howl, her guest appearances can be ghostly or guttural โ€” but also her restless, nomadic creative nature. โ€œIโ€™ve always, always loved working with people,โ€ Mosshart says. โ€œThe power of more people is wonderful, and different ideas and different interpretations. Itโ€™s so fascinating to me to work outside of the Kills, work in the Dead Weather, but then also go do stuff with other bands and go sing on someoneโ€™s song. You go inside whatever their creative process is and explore. Everyone does something differently. You never walk away having not learned something. Itโ€™s great.โ€

When I was digging into all the places youโ€™ve contributed guest vocals, I was blown away. I forgot that you were on Placeboโ€™s record, Meds, and Primal Screamโ€™s Riot City Blues that same year. How did you end up on both of those records? Were you doing the vocals in person in the studio? Or were you sending stuff back and forth?

There was no place where I could express myself, find an echo. From this isolation I made songs, Teenage Angst or Burger Queen, because it inevitably turned me into a voyeur. ๐Ÿ“ข๐๐ซ๐ข๐š๐ง: That's the whole point of a song like 'Burger Queen' sort of like structurally or if you're talking about it from a musical standpoint. The whole point of that song is to use a cheesy rhyme but to use words like infection, you know, connection, erection, you know. So it's subverting the cheesiness. It's like putting fuck and baby in the same verse.

๐’๐š๐ฅ๐ฅ๐ฒ ๐’๐ญ๐ซ๐š๐ญ๐ญ๐จ๐ง: I bet it's also the first time caesarean section's been used in a pop song!

๐Ÿ“ข๐๐ซ๐ข๐š๐ง: No, that one's kind of more of a story really. It's kind of about being in the wrong place at the wrong time you know and I guess you just finally... since we kind of grew up in Luxembourg - finally since we've written a song about it we can kind of forget about it now. But you know I think it's just... the play on Burger King, Burger Queen, Luxemburger, just kind of you know amused me when I first came up with it and along with 'My Sweet Prince' I think it's one of the saddest songs, but really beautiful, that we've written. I think there's a real beauty in our sadness you know when it goes down there there's something in it that really pulls at your heart, you know, and I don't know how we really achieve it but it's there. There always seems to be a tiny bit of hope at the end of it as well which is important."

Having passed Lorraine, finding yourself in the Grand Duchy comes a true shock. Just a few steps from the rapeseed fields close to the former mine basin, and the border clearly warns of the inevitability of the shock coming: alcohol and cigarettes at a price that can withstand any competition, signs in two languages: French and Luxembourgish. The latter resembles distorted German with guttural sounds.

Very quickly, the roads turn into avenues lined with tall buildings with signs of the of the largest commercial banks on the planet; luxury multifunctional cars and high-end sports cars are proudly displayed in front of them. No one walks here, people mostly drive in soft silence, muffled by financial well-being.

It was in this universe of comfort and slowness that the childhood and adolescence of young Brian Molko passed. Within this reliable but terribly predictable world, the young guy couldnโ€™t find his place. He felt completely out of touch with his older brother and couldn't find any suitable cultural pursuits for himself. โ€œMy teenage years were dark, filled with loneliness and boredom. I felt out of place. All the time I was waiting for something special to happen and turn my whole life upside down.โ€ (Brian Molko)
[โ€ฆ]
โ€œWhat was great about Luxembourg, thatโ€™s its extremely international community. I grew up surrounded by children of various nationalities. I think, it made me open to different cultures, different traditions at an early age. And that taught me a lot. It taught me tolerance and understanding towards others. I think it's very important." (Brian Molko)
[โ€ฆ]
Next to his mother and older brother, his life flowed like a long and very calm river. Constantly busy with his own affairs and being in endless departures due to his business, Brian's father was very rarely at home. Itโ€™s the lack of paternal attention that future leader of Placebo would later call an important factor that had a huge impact on his personality.
โ€œMy father is an American financial freak. Of course, in a family where there was no place for any artistic aspirations, I felt like a black sheep. Nobody believed in me. So, I locked myself in my room and learned to play guitar." (Brian Molko)

โ€œWhen I was a kid, we often drove somewhere in the family van, and my parents listened to The Beatles, The Kinks and other bands like that on the road. I was put to bed to the Elton Johnโ€™s music โ€ฆ The Bee Gees and questionable masterpieces of The Wings, but at the age of 7 you canโ€™t protest, you have to endure. My father was a big fan of Buddy Holly. It was really cool because my friendsโ€™ parents loved Elvis and I was kind of an anti-Elvis." (Brian Molko)

Studying at the prestigious American International School of Luxembourg, founded in 1962 as Dupont School, Brian was languishing; the only thing that fascinated him was drama course. Being a fragail and insecure boy, he was lost in the crowd of diplomats and bankersโ€™ children he studied with. That close presence of the arrogant offspring of American financiers convinced him to never ever live in countries where people of his fatherโ€™s job do.

Molko suffered of deep frustration and to replace it, he often visited Luxembourg bars of โ€“ which bothered his parents a lot. Unlike the little American bourgeois around him, he didnโ€™t do any sports and instead, he escaped to the Netherlands where he also visited local bars with a wide range of psychotropic substances

โ€œThe Luxembourg school is the worst thing that happened in my life. I had to quit the high school because I was constantly bullied there. I used to provoke others, including the guys two times bigger than myself. Standing in front of a small, frail boy, they didnโ€™t dare to hit. I remember that once, they hang me up by my feet at a height of six meters. If they had untied the rope then, I would definitely have my neck broken. So, I looked into the eyes of death at a very young age." (Brian Molko)

โ€œSometimes, I still have nightmares that Iโ€™m back to school. But the good thing is that in the middle of a dream, I always realise that school is over for me many years ago, and then I begin to badmouth everyone on my way.โ€ (Brian Molko)

These three gems I want to talk about are unique because of Brian's talent, where he uses his singing in just the right way to elevate each of these songs to the highest level. Plus, we have two songs that are recorded in two versions, which is just something that pleases my ears again.

The very first song and such a gem.

Unfortunately, this song was never performed live either.
When you hear the verse โญ"...๐˜›๐˜ฉ๐˜ข๐˜ต'๐˜ด ๐˜ฏ๐˜ฐ๐˜ต ๐˜ฑ๐˜ญ๐˜ข๐˜ด๐˜ต๐˜ช๐˜ค๐˜ช๐˜ฏ๐˜ฆ"โญ for the first time, it's pure perfection put into a unique voice.

Brian's voice makes this song something absolutely tender, soft, something that wraps you in angelic wings and you wish it would never end.
At least that's how this song makes me feel.

The lyrics could support teenagers in their difficult time when they are trying to draw attention to their uniqueness.
It's a time when everyone feels the need to be more or less a rebel, to stand up for themselves.

But this song can also be understood from the other side - at the moment when a young person joins a group of other rebels and tries to impress others there, so as not to stand out from the crowd, then it is appropriate to use exactly that verse - โญ"๐ƒ๐จ๐ง'๐ญ ๐Ÿ๐จ๐ซ๐ ๐ž๐ญ ๐ญ๐จ ๐›๐ž ๐ญ๐ก๐ž ๐ฐ๐š๐ฒ ๐ฒ๐จ๐ฎ ๐š๐ซ๐ž".โญ

But this song lovingly suggests to each of us to reflect on our lives.
To what extent am I being myself and to what extent am I trying to behave in a way that fulfills others' idea of me?
I leave that reflection to you.

I lived most of my life to please everyone around me...mother, husband, children, boss at work...
Until I got seriously ill and it made me realize where my uniqueness had been lost.

Rebel anarchist in my youth, but suddenly I didn't recognize myself...
Yeah, that was a tough test.

It was only then that the lyrics of this song took on the right meaning for me. I can honestly say for myself that Placebo really is therapy. Because such songs are meant to make you think.

And thanks to this, we can now enjoy two lullabies instead of one!

Take a listen to the version '๐ˆ'๐ฅ๐ฅ ๐๐ž ๐˜๐จ๐ฎ๐ซ๐ฌ' that was eventually released as the ninth song of the ๐’๐ฅ๐ž๐ž๐ฉ๐ข๐ง๐  ๐–๐ข๐ญ๐ก ๐†๐ก๐จ๐ฌ๐ญ๐ฌ album. You'll hear the onset of Steve's drums first, joined by the dark sound of Stefan's guitar.
Even this beginning is a foreshadowing that this is no romantic sweet lovesong.

To me, this song is an expression of the cruel boundless dependence of one person on another.
But be warned - it's not the tormented tone of Without You I'm Nothing song, it's not the dog's eyes full of desire to be noticed by the other person.
These are dark threats, just whatever you do, I'll lovingly hold you in my arms so you can't breathe.

For me it's like -

I'll be your water, I'll clear your thoughts and I'll keep a good eye on you so you don't escape.
I'll be your anchor, I'll hold you so you never leave these shores.
I'll be your drug, the demons don't stand a chance because you have me.

I'll be your everything, but don't you dare look anywhere else. It's me, I'm all you need. Nobody else. And you have no choice but to believe it and surrender.

It's about self-degradation, total humiliation at any cost.

I have personally experienced several times a situation when I looked up in love to some important person from my surroundings, and in that moment, when your hormones are totally controlling you and every cell is screaming for his or her arms, it's pretty hard to handle the emotions.

It meant a lot of despair and crying nights for me...

Fate often tests us hard, how far we are willing to go, what humiliation we are able to achieve, just to be noticed by that person.

โœจ๐‘ฉ๐‘น๐‘ฐ๐‘จ๐‘ต:
๐ŸŽคThe first time I ever saw Brix was on TV. I grew up in Luxembourg in the 1980s and there was this legendary show called Snub TV, where a lot of people of my generation got introduced to alternative music. I liked her song so much that I went out and bought the cassette. That was my first introduction to her: a kooky American lady on TV.

Cut to London, 2002, and I was finally moving into my dream loft apartment. My mate and I were dragging all my stuff up in the lift and on one of these trips I ran into this American woman. I said "Hi, I'm Brian" and she said "Hi, I'm Brix". I couldn't believe it. I was moving in next door to the living legend who I'd been listening to for 10 years.

Over the years we've become very close. Even though I spend at least six months of the year on the road, Brix and I have a real unspoken understanding because, in a way, she's already been through a lot of the things I am going through now.

I also shop at Brix's shop a lot. It's the place where I get the majority of the trousers that I wear on stage. I witnessed the beginning of the Start empire and now it's an oasis of genuine glamour in the universe of urban decay, dog shit and trust-fund hipness that is Shoreditch. Every piece that is sold is lovingly picked. Plus it's convenient and the neighbours' discount is fantastic.

We used to party a lot, but things have changed now that I'm a father. When I first moved in here, it was when my band started getting really successful and Brix would always show up to see us in Europe. We'd have the best of times because Brix is the life of the party. My memories of her are of the comfort of a familiar face transported to legendary venues in Paris.

These days we have a lot of dinner parties - Brix is a great cook. Our next outing is lunch, and we're going to Jamie Oliver's Fifteen later. Our crazy days are kind of over. Everybody has started breeding.

Brix and I will be friends forever. We're both people who've lived the rock'n'roll thing to the full - through the good craziness and the bad craziness, the light and the darkness, we've been there for each other. I think it's a sign of a true friendship. Until doing this interview I didn't really think about our friendship because it was so natural and so unspoken. Brix gives off such an inspiring energy she radiates.

๐ŸŽค I lived here before Brian did. There were always rumours about rock stars buying places - someone from the Prodigy bought a flat two doors down, and then I heard that Brian from Placebo was moving in. I only really knew his song, "Nancy Boy", and I loved it - but I only vaguely knew what he looked like. Then one day we met in the lift, and we just introduced ourselves. After that we kept bumping into each other, we both thought that we had a lot in common. It was almost like we connected without having to go through the awkward motions of becoming friends. It was seamless really.

I have fitted Brian in many a pair of jeans, but he doesn't always agree with what I suggest. He has a very strong sense of taste and, being a rock star, he gets fabulous clothes from all over the place. I remember once Hedi Slimane from Christian Dior gave him a truckload of clothes and I was extremely jealous.

The thing about Brian is that he's super-intelligent. He's such a special creature - so captivating and warm - I would love him no matter what he did. One night a few years ago we went to this wild festival called Lost Vagueness, where men dressed up as women and where there was a big casino and gambling and burlesque; really mad. It was late and we were all on the blackjack table where Brian was winning, and winning and winning - he just could not lose. I remember thinking it was like God was shining his light on this man.

I've got millions of fond memories of Brian. We've had so many great nights out together, and dinner parties at each other's houses. One year we threw a rolling New-Year's-Eve party that started off at his house for canapรฉs; then to the next neighbours' house for the first course; the next neighbours' house for the main course - and it ended up at our house for champagne and dessert on the roof. It was wonderful, but even just sitting around watching TV with him is great.

I feel lucky to have Brian as a friend. There are times when I've felt a bit low or insecure, and he's always bolstered my ego. He never fails to remind me of my past, which is good, because I could forget it and move on to the next stage of life. It's really special to know that he's proud of me. It makes me feel all warm and teary.

๐ŸŒ  What more can I say than what I already said about the concert in Luxembourg ?
It was a thousand times more magical ! But I'm not going to compare, because each concert has its own atmosphere.

๐ŸŒ  People arrived rather late to line up. I arrived in the early afternoon. I was allocated number 7 and the wait began. The few fans present were very nice and there was no shortage of Placebo talk, of course ๐Ÿ˜Š

๐ŸŒ  The doors opened, we ran and stood in the centre at the barrier. The perfect place to enjoy a concert ๐ŸŽถ

๐ŸŒ  The opening act, ๐‘ฌ๐’…๐’Š๐’•๐’‰ ๐‘ต๐’š๐’๐’๐’, was pretty good. A former French band from the 80s, they reunited 3 years ago. The rock they played, and updated, was powerful. For their last song they invited a man on stage (I can't remember his name !) who the singer introduced as the '๐‘”๐‘œ๐‘‘๐‘“๐‘Ž๐‘กโ„Ž๐‘’๐‘Ÿ ๐‘œ๐‘“ ๐‘ƒ๐‘™๐‘Ž๐‘๐‘’๐‘๐‘œ'. And ๐‘บ๐’•๐’†๐’‡๐’‚๐’ was present at the side of the stage to admire the band. The song was called '๐˜‘๐˜ฐ๐˜ฉ๐˜ฏ๐˜ฏ๐˜บ ๐˜‘๐˜ฐ๐˜ฉ๐˜ฏ๐˜ฏ๐˜บ, a tribute song to the singer Johnny Hallyday., a famous rock French singer.

๐ŸŒ  ๐‘บ๐’•๐’†๐’‡๐’‚๐’ came down to greet the audience before leaving. He took his time to enjoy the experience. What a magical moment to see his contentment ๐Ÿ˜. Yes, ๐๐ฅ๐š๐œ๐ž๐›๐จ was bright and flamboyant. There is no doubt seeing the joy of the audience !

๐ŸŒ  I was able to get a set list that will go straight into my Placebo collection. โ™ฆ๏ธ Last night the band was simply perfect. From the first song to the last, ๐๐ฅ๐š๐œ๐ž๐›๐จ wanted to reach transcendence, as noted in the message before the concert. At least, I did.

My Placebo concert at the Bataclan, which for 10 years was the one where a special symbiosis with the band was achieved, was swept away with a single stroke last night ๐Ÿ”ฅ.
