๐Ÿ“๐‘ฉ๐’“๐’Š๐’‚๐’ ๐‘ด๐’๐’๐’Œ๐’ has been up since 5am doing interview after interview after interview. He has appeared on the ๐‘ช๐’‰๐’‚๐’๐’๐’†๐’ ๐Ÿ’ breakfast programme, ๐‘น๐‘ฐ:๐‘บ๐‘ฌ and has had fifteen different journalists sit before him in a row, most likely repeating the same questions. So, you can imagine my trepidation at being the last journo to interview ๐‘ฉ๐’“๐’Š๐’‚๐’ after such a long and boring day. I presumed he would be cranky and disinterested in my questions, and with good reason. However, ๐‘ฉ๐’“๐’Š๐’‚๐’ is disarmingly friendly and charming, chatting in an open and informal way to me. He always makes eye contact when talking and his grey/blue eyes are exceptionally captivating. The man looks unfairly good considering he has been up for a long time. So, what must it be like sitting through constant interviews and being expected to be pleasant all day?

It would appear that a more mature ๐‘ท๐’๐’‚๐’„๐’†๐’ƒ๐’ has emerged from the gritty leftovers of the 90s. โ€˜๐‘บ๐’๐’†๐’†๐’‘๐’Š๐’๐’ˆ ๐‘พ๐’Š๐’•๐’‰ ๐‘ฎ๐’‰๐’๐’”๐’•๐’”โ€™ serves to represent that, justifying everything ๐‘ฉ๐’“๐’Š๐’‚๐’ has said. ๐‘ฉ๐’“๐’Š๐’‚๐’, himself, has proved to be an honest and thoughtful person, thinking each question I ask over thoroughly to give me the best answer he can, often exploring himself through the question. Hello soulmates,
tonight we will spend again with Placebo lullabies.
This time I have two songs for you that will surprise you with their contrast and you can choose which will be the best for your mood today.

Today's songs are really full of contrast, maybe more so than usual for Placebo.

Have you ever experienced a situation where in the middle of the day your brain suddenly shuts down completely, you feel like closing your eyes and going into the dreamland for a little while...?

...You close your eyes, even when you are engaged in some important activity, but the body simply refuses to obey the brain at that moment...

I think everyone who knows the suffering of insomnia has also experienced at least small bouts of narcolepsy. I'm glad that period of falling into darkness is over for me.

The interesting thing about these states is that even during the few seconds that sleep lasts, you dream one or more dreams in very rapid succession. I used to have trouble clarifying what was dream and what was reality after waking up. They were crazy states.

Placebo's ๐Ÿ”น'๐๐€๐‘๐‚๐Ž๐‹๐„๐๐“๐ˆ๐‚'๐Ÿ”น was my anthem at the time, mainly because of the title and one verse that touched on my states of losing track of what was real... I wanted to end everything that was hurting me, a long-term relationship, an illness, actually my life...

My path to healing came in meditation... My soul was a place of peace, calm and self-acceptance, loving me unconditionally and not flooding me with constant guilt and my failure.

But to this day I still feel a connection to the song that accompanied me in difficult times, even though it was just one of many, of course...

'๐๐š๐ซ๐œ๐จ๐ฅ๐ž๐ฉ๐ญ๐ข๐œ' is a beautiful melancholic fragile ballad mainly due to Brian's voice.

It's again about a relationship that is dying... One of the couple already feels the state of impending self-destruction, while the other doesn't want to feel it yet...

This amazing song was released as b-side on the single โ€œSlave to the wageโ€ on September 25th 2000 and re-released on the album โ€œB-sides 1996-2006โ€ in 2011.

I think that in the first part of the lyrics the narrator describes his hectic life as a rock star, the only way to turn off headaches can be a fast lane (maybe cocaine...) and also sex.

Friends, how perverse is this lullaby for you as a fan of such a provocative band?

My personal opinion is that to describe its sincere sensuality in a careful, roundabout way is an insult to this very lovely song.

And if you combine listening to it with some very pleasant intimate experiences, you give it exactly the energy for which it was created.

Unfortunately for us, this gem has never been played live. Therefore, there is no video to share with you, except for

There is no great mystery, after almost ten years of career, that's what the bands that are still there do. Many fellow artists who started at the same time as us, today no longer exist. People are looking for some deep meaning in this compilation, but there is none. It's not a record deal issue, because it doesn't count as an album for the record company. It's not a matter of ideas, because we've already written the new album. Maybe it was just about giving us a little time to do something else. We've been on tour for two years and we need to take a break, to distance ourselves from things a bit.

We put two previously unreleased songs on the compilation to tame the voracious appetite of our fans. We tried to impose Brian Eno rules on ourselves. The songs should not be longer than two and a half minutes and there should be no guitar. First, because we have never done it before. And also, because people think Placebo is a guitar band, and we don't like that label. Looking back, I think Twenty Years is probably one of our greatest songs. It's our closest track to U2's With or Without You, the ultimate song.

๐Ÿ“ข๐๐ซ๐ข๐š๐ง: It's not a โ€˜greatest hitsโ€™ compilation, it's not a โ€˜best ofโ€™, it's a kind of historical document, a chronological retrospective of the band, through its most accessible pieces. Choosing singles was a way of presenting the old repertoire. We are aware that there are 40% of fans today who got to know the band through Sleeping With Ghosts and specifically, The Bitter End. We see them at the concerts, they are 14-15 years old... At the time of the first album, they were still watching TV. Teenagers don't have a lot of money and if they want to listen to more Placebo, they shouldnโ€™t necessarily buy all four albums.

There are many different versions of the Placebo story. [โ€ฆ] But my favourite of all is the one about this perverse trio who wrote these extraordinary songs...
It's about a band who became famous for a song so sexually brave and confrontational that coy odes to boys called "Michael" sound feeble in comparison. A song about being a "Nancy Boy", about lube and rubbers and how "We're a couple / When our bodies double." And about how Molko, an actual functioning bisexual, has been unpleasantly dismissed as a sexual dilettante while the charlatan bisexuals reap plaudits.
Once More With Feeling is all about a band who wrote a song called "You Don't Care About Us". A track that's propelled by an unstoppable, elastic bass line and that flips manically between wise, sighing despair and spitting adolescent rage. A song which feels like it had no choice but to be written and which is one of the rawest, most brilliant singles of the last decade.
It's a story about the shuddering electronica of "Pure Morning", the sleazy sneer of "Every You, Every Me" and the searing riff of "Bruise Pristine". It's about a band constrained by their musical limitations but who thrashed happily within them. It's about the way that "Special K" climbs frantically towards its chorus before collapsing sadly under its own weight.
This is a singles collection which reveals to the listener the most seductively bruising rock band of recent years. Each song stems from a songwriter so instinctive and precise that when he writes a song called "The Bitter End", that's exactly what it sounds like.
And yes, it's a tale about an imperfect band, a band prone to sloppy sloganeering like "Slave To The Wage" or clumsy posturing like "Black Eyed". But the band remain electrifying, alive and enthralling in all those imperfections.
This is a story about a band who have remained fiercely independent in a bland pop landscape. Read it.

It's time for an โ™ฆ๏ธ๐—œ๐—ก๐—ง๐—˜๐—ฅ๐—ฉ๐—œ๐—˜๐—ชโ™ฆ๏ธ again. This one was given to Melody Maker by our three Placebo boys in 1999 when they were touring Australia with Silverchair. Everyone of them had to answer five questions. I found it interesting that Brian was mainly asked stuff about touring and his festival experiences while Stefan and Steve Hewitt had to answer some quite personal questions. But Brian made up for this by using the f-word in almost every statement. ;-) Enjoy reading!

We were standing at the side of the stage watching Marilyn Manson, and he was slagging him off. I told him I didn't think he was actually that bad. SO he put his arm around me, and said very patronisingly, 'You'll learn'... and so we started this 15-minute 'F*** you!' ๐Ÿ’œHello friends,
at the beginning of today's lullabies I want to tell you a true story from my immediate surroundings.

๐Ÿ’”โšกOnce upon a time there was a very shy not very handsome boy and a really very pretty girl. In a fairy tale, this seemingly romantic story would probably have a happy ending. But in reality it was a great tragedy that was deeply etched in my memory.
A boy fell madly in love with a girl who was admired by other classmates. He gathered all his courage and started courting her. The young lady laughed at him in front of everyone and continued to ignore him. But she was his whole life. He still had her image in his mind and his heart was bursting not only with pain but also with jealousy.
Here it feels like I'm describing Thom's reason for writing the Creep (Radiohead) song...
Well, this story continued...

The boy withdrew and for a few weeks did nothing but stand outside her window in the shade of a huge tree in her garden and watch his goddess whenever she was in her room.
I'm not going to stretch you any further. The girl's father called the police and accused the boy of obscenity. The young man could not bear the huge misunderstanding of his expressions of love and one night hanged himself from that huge tree in her garden exactly so that he was looking into her window at the moment of his death.โšก๐Ÿ’”

My opening story is just one of many. Every time I listen to this lullaby, I get a sense of the fatal act that cannot be undone. What I mean by this is that not every time a person accused of voyeurism is directly affected by this deviation. Sometimes human misunderstanding and condemnation results in a deeper chasm in humanity than we would expect.

At the beginning of this special term for the voyeur is a very old legend about Lady Godiva of Coventry, which has several versions. One of them states that her husband, Earl Leofric of Mercia, imposed an oppressive tax on the citizens.

Lady Godiva begged him to end the suffering of the people. But Leofric had a condition - he insisted that Godiva must ride naked - covered only in her long hair - through the city on horseback.

Before beginning this quest to help Coventry, Lady Godiva told everyone to stay indoors and shut their windows to preserve her modesty. She then rode through the streets, her long hair draped so that it covered almost her whole body, allowing only her legs and eyes to remain visible.

The name "Peeping Tom" for a voyeur originates from later versions of this legend, in which a tailor named Thomas watched her ride and was struck blind or killed for it.
Lady Godiva really lived and was married to her husband Leofric in the 11th century. However, the truth of the legend is denied by the fact that, according to historical sources, this noble married couple was known for their charity in favor of the church.
This means that many versions of this legend arose over the next several hundred years as a folkloric tradition associated with the annual fairs in the locality of Coventry.

Honestly - I stopped accepting this senseless human behavior a long time ago and that's why I live in the mountains, where I have the opportunity to think more about everything that is really important.

And no wonder Brian is increasingly asserting his dislike of cell phones at his concerts for the sake of his mental health, even having to move into the unknown because of snoopers around him.

Let's try to imagine that this man is communicating with us through his talent and his work, in which he has put his heart, and therefore he welcomes our feedback, he wants to feel our hearts, our joy, our tears, our understanding.

In April 2003 Brian talked to a journalist from X-Ray and answered some very personal questions during their conversation. I picked out the most interesting and uncommon questions for you.

๐Ÿ“ข โ€There was a period in 1999 where I was gloriously happy, but I was delusional! (laughs) I was head over heels in love and I thought that this was it and that I was sorted and that a whole bag of worries had just left me, like Pilgrimโ€™s Progress, losing the burden of the sins on his back. I felt deliriously happy. But in the immortal words of Ian McCulloch, nothing lasts forever.โ€

๐Ÿ“ข โ€I was in Africa where we were living at the time. I was about two years old and I remember being in my cot, and it seemed to me to be like a prison cell already. I remember staring through the bars watching our maid sweep the floor.โ€

๐Ÿ“ข โ€Yes, when I was a kid, in a car wreck on the way to school one morning. I was shocked at how ghost white this body was. And it was very soon after the accident. Itโ€™s an image thatโ€™s never left me.โ€

๐Ÿ“ข โ€Organised religion has always seemed a bit of a cop-out to me, cos youโ€™re accepting a list of rules without finding your own morality and your own principles โ€“ which takes more effort, but is infinitely more rewarding. The idea of life after death, which I grew up with all around me, is that it almost seems like an excuse for not living your life today. Life is so precious that it canโ€™t be a rehearsal for some idyllic existence in the clouds. If you realise there could be nothing at the end of it all, it doesnโ€™t mean you have to have a massive existential quandary about it, it just makes every second that you live all the more precious, and everything you do and every effect you have on other people much more important. When we go, we go. Iโ€™d like to believe in reincarnation. It would be nice, but Iโ€™m not too sure.โ€

๐Ÿ“ข โ€God, โ€™98. I donโ€™t really do drugs anymore. After heroin, I had a real problem with cocaine as well. I remember talking to my manager and saying, โ€œthis is all getting to be too much effort, I donโ€™t know if I can deal with it, I just want to get back to where I was beforeโ€, which was just a drinker and a smoker. It agrees with me; the rest of it doesnโ€™t really at all. And thatโ€™s all I am now, a drinker and smoker. Itโ€™s good. A stoned band is a happy band!โ€

๐Ÿ“ข โ€Many times. Iโ€™ve been a heartbreaker too. Which I find funny cos Iโ€™m the guy who couldnโ€™t get laid at college. Which is why, when people treat you like some kind of sex symbol, I find it quite embarrassing. Iโ€™ve been a bad boy, and Iโ€™ve hurt people along the way. Itโ€™s impossible to exist and to take risks in life without hurting people along the way. Thereโ€™s nothing worse than not attempting something cos youโ€™re worried about a negative outcome. Thatโ€™s self-censorship on a life level.โ€

๐Ÿ“ข โ€Yes. But not recently! (laughs) I often wonder if monogamy or marriage is one of these social constructs that has been put in place in order to control the general public. Itโ€™s a kickback to the Old Testament. Itโ€™s very uncommon for animals to mate for life. And there was a study done on pigeons and they found that 13% of pigeons are inherently homosexual. Gay pigeons, letโ€™s go! (laughs) Iโ€™m convinced my dog was gay when I was growing up, too.โ€

๐Ÿ“ข โ€I was 17. Itโ€™s when I moved to London, and fell in love with a third year drama student. I think he relished the idea of breaking me in probably more than was actually in love with me! Iโ€™ve had sporadic relationships with men since. I remember a fantastic quote of Derek Jarmanโ€™s which was โ€œthe world has to realise that heterosexuality is not the norm, itโ€™s just commonโ€. That says it all for me.โ€

๐Ÿ“ข โ€My father and I donโ€™t communicate anymore. Weโ€™re just not good for each other so weโ€™re not in each otherโ€™s lives. I love my mum but sheโ€™s deeply religious. Our conversation is limited because I essentially do something that is not the way of the Lord. Sheโ€™s just had to get used to it. I think the make-up is the thing that annoys my mum the most. Thankfully sheโ€™s hard of hearing, so she hasnโ€™t really got the records fully. I have an older brother who Iโ€™m really close with, and thatโ€™s it.โ€

๐Ÿ“ข โ€Iโ€™ve considered it many times. Iโ€™ve been very close to going to see people; Iโ€™ve cancelled appointments on the day for many different reasons. But to be honest, Iโ€™m lucky to have the music, thatโ€™s totally where I get it out. Iโ€™m quite happy with the amount of neuroses Iโ€™ve got now. They keep me ticking over. If I got rid of them all, who knows, I might become Sting for Godโ€™s sake, and I canโ€™t imagine anything worse on this planet!โ€

๐Ÿ“ข โ€Yes, I'm improving as a human being. I have more respect for people, I'm learning to become less egocentric and arrogant and I'm learning to listen to people a lot more, which I think is really important. If I was able to go back to my younger self, I think I'd say to myself "drink more water and don't worry about it, it's going to get better". And I think it does. For me, my twenties were definitely a second adolescence which I feel I'm coming out of right now. It was a chaotic, schizophrenic and excessive time and I experienced a lot and learned a great deal from it. I would have a real problem as a human being if I hadn't.
I do think it gets better. I wouldn't necessarily do my twenties again, cos it was a very difficult time. But the demons don't shout as loud anymore. It's okay being me right now.โ€

๐ŸŽถ๐ƒ๐€๐˜๐’ ๐๐„๐…๐Ž๐‘๐„ ๐˜๐Ž๐” ๐‚๐€๐Œ๐„๐ŸŽถ

โ€œ๐ƒ๐€๐˜๐’ ๐๐„๐…๐Ž๐‘๐„ ๐˜๐Ž๐” ๐‚๐€๐Œ๐„โ€ is a song from Placebo's third record "๐—•๐—น๐—ฎ๐—ฐ๐—ธ ๐—บ๐—ฎ๐—ฟ๐—ธ๐—ฒ๐˜ ๐—บ๐˜‚๐˜€๐—ถ๐—ฐ" (2000). An album about which Brian said that it โ€œrocks harder then the first two put together. It deals with violence quite a lotโ€ (Kerrang, July 15th 2000). In another interview with the same magazine he stated that it's โ€œanger and energy. It's the final part of our trilogyโ€œ.

So what about the debut album (โ€œPlaceboโ€) and its follow-up (โ€œWithout you I'm nothingโ€)? โ€“ In hindsight Brian saw it like this: โ€œYou know, the first album dealt with sex, drugs and rock and roll. Crazy sex, wild sex, sex on drugs, all that. On the second we're dealing with the after effects of thatโ€œ (Circus, May 1999). Or in other words: "The first album was a bit of a party and the second album is kind of the hangover. I describe this record as a post-coital depression" (Steve Hewitt, The Mirror, March 18th 1999).

But back to โ€œBlack market musicโ€. The themes that run through the album, actually through Placebo songs in general, are love and drugs. Brian: โ€œThat's what people get addicted to most in life. And they are often the same. People have the same reactions to bothโ€ (Melody Maker, October 20th 2000). He also said that for him this idea of addiction is not only related to substances and people but also to emotions or situations.
Although โ€œBlack market musicโ€ is still about the same themes as the previous records it adds something new to the songs: โ€œ'It is more of a political record, an anger record. It's simply because we've ceased to navel-gaze as much and started to react to the injustice and the pain of the outside world" (Brian, Eye Weekly, April 26th 2001).

According to Brian โ€œDays before you cameโ€ isn't written about someone in particular. He explained that the lyrics can be read either about someone falling in love or someone kicking an intense drug habit. Brian: โ€œI think the provisional line in the song is 'I didn't want you anyway' about something taking over your life without you asking for it (see quote below).

โ€œDays before you cameโ€ was recorded at Townhouse Studios in London and produced by Paul Corkett. It was engineered by Lorraine Francis and mastered by Ian Cooper.
The song was played live mainly during the โ€œBlack market musicโ€ tour in 2000 and 2001. After that it was performed only at three more occasions in early 2003. Altogether it was brought on stage 104 confirmed times. The shared video was recorded at Bizarre Festival in Germany on August 18th 2000. This was a quite short set consisting of only twelve songs.

๐Ÿ“ข "It isn't written about anyone in particular, it's a song for no one really. It's straightforward lyrically and you can read it as someone falling in love or even someone kicking a really intense drug habit. I think the provisional line in the song is 'I didn't want you anyway' about something taking over your life without you asking for it. Or if you have to give up something bad in your life, healthwise, it's not necessarily because you want to, it could be something as simple as cigarettes or something far more dangerous."

Days before you came
Freezing cold and empty
Towns that change their name
And a horn of plenty

Days before you came
Counting breaths inside me
Even crack-cocaine
couldn't start to hide me

Won't you join me now?
Baby's looking torn and frayed
Join the masquerade
Join the masquerade

Won't you join me now?
Baby's looking to get laid
Join the masquerade
Join the masquerade.

Days before you came
It always seemed enticing
to be naked and profane
There is no denying

Days before you came
Thunderbolt and lightning
Each day a brand new vein
Each tourniquet colliding

I didn't want you anyway

Hello friends,

Placebo has released 8 studio albums, compilations, covers and many successful singles during its existence. The guys have toured the world several times. They've met a lot of people important to their work and their lives.

Why am I writing all this?
Because every event in the life of this successful and beloved duo deserves our memory and a little celebration.

It is full of gems in which each of us will find the story of our lives.
Can you admit which song from this album you like the most and what memories connect you to it?
Who among you was already a fan when Placebo released this yellow gem?
And which of you became their devoted soul thanks to this album?
So let's break the series of lullabies again today and immerse ourselves in memories.

Without You I'm Nothing has been generally well received by critics.

I really like this one from James Oldham of NME:
๐Ÿ“ŒMolko's skill lies in his inherent grasp of what makes for an exciting pop record. He might cite Sonic Youth as his prime influence, but they have never made a record that's come close to matching the muscular force of this album. The sheer clarity and power of the sounds here frequently take your breath away: the cranked-out guitar line of 'Pure Morning', the rumbling fuzz of 'Allergic (To Thoughts Of Mother Earth)', the strung-out, mechanical beauty of 'My Sweet Prince', they're all fantastic moments, glossed and fattened by Steve Osbourne's amazing production and strongly reminiscent of both Nirvana's 'Nevermind' and Hole's 'Celebrity Skin'.

That's what Placebo are pushing towards all the time: the perfect radio hit. These aren't songs that need to be studied too carefully. Whatever Molko says about the vulnerability and self-criticism of the lyrics on this record, the overall effect hardly reeks of repentance or fragility, the songs here are too confident for that, too sure of both where they're going and how they're going to get there.
A thrilling record, then, made by freaks, for freaks. Just don't expect to leave with your soul intact.

But apparently the live context didn't work for the song neither, there are only eight confirmed performances of this song to be found., all of them took place in 1997.

๐Ÿ’ฌ "I guess we were still learning how to use the studio, and we were looking to flesh out our sound beyond the power trio format. But it was a difficult record to make because we had a very dysfunctional relationship with our producer [Steve Osborne]. By the end of it, we weren't even talking. And it wasn't as if we'd had any major arguments. We started off not talking much anyway, and then as the months went by, it became less until there was no talking. It was such a strange atmosphere. The breakthrough track was "Pure Morning," and we didn't record that until our work with Steve was done. We recorded that during a B-side session with a different producer, Phil Vinall. That was like we were kids in a candy shop. It was borne out of chaos, because the pressure was off. So we just started playing around with all of these different sounds and that song was the result. I hadn't heard it in about ten years until recently, and I was actually surprised at how timeless and modern that song actually sounds. I have no issues whatsoever with the musicโ€”I actually really quite like the musicโ€”I just don't think the lyrics are my best. That's kind of why we haven't played it in concert for the last decade. Probably nine years to be precise. "Nancy Boy" neither, which is why we decided to resurrect them from the grave for this tour we're embarking on."

๐Ÿ”น๐Ÿ’ฌ โ€œIt's a very romantic title and when we were demoing the album it seemed to sort of emerge as something that... a way of getting the theme of the record across. You know the record's like sort of primarily about an ever-pervading loneliness and heartbreak really and you know there's quite a few relationship songs in there so on one level it's kind of like us... it's a message for us, from us to ourselves, to each other in the band. It's a message to our fans and it's also sort of something that's universal in the way that most people have felt that at least once in their lives.โ€œ

I think where our debut was under produced, Without You I'm Nothing was overproduced, not grossly overproduced but still overproduced. None of the albums sounded phat enough for our taste. They were all good albums and we're still proud of them, but they just weren't exactly what we wanted them to be, exactly what we imagined."

๐Ÿ’ฌโ€œWeโ€™ve been flashing up images of David whilst playing โ€˜Without You Iโ€™m Nothingโ€™ on this tour and some nights it's been such an emotional experience that I've come very close to breaking down into tears" Molko confides. "There was a point during the summer where I said to Stefan 'I'm not too sure if I can play this anymore, it's tearing me apart'. But Iโ€™ve got over that now and instead, it has become a celebration of who David Bowie was and the impact he had on me as a human being, as well as a musician. The best advice he ever gave us was 'whatever you do, never lose your spontaneity'. David was always one for taking left-corners and going off on tangents and I think he infused a courage in us to do exactly that, to constantly re-invent ourselves. So yes the significance has changed, it's become a lot more about David for me, which is ok. He's kind of constantly with me at the moment, which is quite sweet and I reflect on our conversations, on his advice and what it was like to see him play every night for five years when we were touring together; he's like my guardian angel!โ€

I'm putting his statement at the end of today's post and now I'm going to say goodbye.

The memory of the release of this yellow treasure is very personal to me today. Thanks to this album, I got to know a band that made its mark on my heart and still holds a vital place in it today.
I will be happy if you share with us the feelings that songs like Pure Morning, Brick Shithouse, You Don't Care About Us, The Crawl or My Sweet Prince left in you..

While Placeboโ€™s debut revelled in hedonism, its sequel was all emotional aftermath, and demonstrated more assured songwriting. Producer ๐’๐“๐„๐•๐„ ๐Ž๐’๐๐Ž๐‘๐๐„ tells us more.

With its more robust sonics and more complex emotions serving a series of perspectives on relationship breakdown, Without You Iโ€™m Nothing would verify Molko and musical partner Stefan Olsdalโ€™s songwriting prowess โ€“ and their faculty for crafting bewitching arrangements.
โ€ฆ/.../

Dissatisfied with the โ€˜thinโ€™ sound of their debut and the frustration of building each track one instrument at a time, the band largely recorded Without You Iโ€™m Nothing live. After meeting Happy Mondays and New Order producer Steve Osborne โ€“ a big fan of the bandโ€™s debut โ€“ following a show in Manchester, Placebo agreed to work with him to craft this more direct-sounding album at Peter Gabrielโ€™s Real World Studios.

โ€œThey already had pretty much everything ready to go when it came to making the album,โ€ Osborne tells us. โ€œThere was stuff like Brick Shithouse, which needed a little more production in terms of the sound, but overall our approach was to make an old-school band-playing-in-a-room record.โ€

These idiosyncratic approaches fed into Molkoโ€™s magnetism. โ€œWhat you do is develop your own style through mistakes,โ€ the guitarist told Alternative Press in 1999. โ€œIf you donโ€™t know what the rules are, then there are no rules in the first place. Youโ€™ll find youโ€™re doing some crazy chord which, if you were taking a course, you wouldnโ€™t attempt until three years into it.โ€

Osborne was hugely impressed by the 26 year-oldโ€™s abilities. โ€œBrian totally had his own style, his own way of playing,โ€ he tells Guitar.com. โ€œI mean, I think thatโ€™s the thing about Placebo. Theyโ€™ve got this very unique sound. Stefan too, he would be playing bass chords on the Fender VI. That made it difficult to mix the low end sometimes but, together, their whole ethos and sound was attractive.โ€

The albumโ€™s 12 songs sketched out a multi-hued postmortem of a relationship, digging into suffering via the depressive plod of The Crawl and the thorny swing of Summerโ€™s Gone. But at the albumโ€™s core was an optimistic, radiant little gem that motored along with a headstrong chordal thrust and seemed destined for rock radio airplay. The buoyant Every You Every Me was an obvious single and a perfect counterpoint to the anguish that surrounded it. It remains Osborneโ€™s favourite from the record. โ€œIโ€™m a sucker for a good single.โ€

Released in October 1998, Without You Iโ€™m Nothing was immediately recognised as a deeper work than the bandโ€™s debut. It drew a wider assortment of listeners into Placeboโ€™s fold too, resonating with those in the alt crowd looking for blistering rock driven by relatable themes like regret and heartbreak.

โ€œWithout You Iโ€™m Nothing, I mean, thatโ€™s a good album.โ€ says Osborne. โ€œItโ€™s something that Iโ€™d put up there with one of my favourites. The sound of it comes down to the way they wanted to do it, which was real. It sounds real because it was done real. Thereโ€™s no tidying up or anything. It was just captured as it was played in the studio.
