In 2012, three months before the release of their EP โ€œB3โ€, Placebo did a short tour consisting of 18 concerts. It started nine years ago today on July 28th at Low Cost festival in Spain and ended on September 22nd in Minsk, Belarus. The most played song during the โ€œB3โ€ tour was โ€œKitty Litterโ€, it was the only one that was performed at every show.

PLACEBO AND JOAN AS POLICEWOMAN

Today American musician and songwriter Joan Wasser, better known under her artist name Joan as Police Woman, celebrates her 51th birthday.
She was guest vocalist at Placebo's MTV Unplugged concert 2015 and sang โ€œProtect me from what I wantโ€ as duet with Brian.

Joan Wasser was born on July 26th 1970 to an unmarried teenage mother and given up for adoption at infancy. She was raised in Norwalk, Connecticut with her adoptive brother Dan who is a visual artist. Joan credits her background as an adopted child with her "very extroverted" personality. She explained that "when you are in a situation where you're not blood-related to your family, it does become extremely obvious that you're born with your personality".

Joan started piano lessons at the age of six and had her first violin lessons when she was eight. At age 18 she began her music career during her studies at the College of Fine Arts at Boston University.
In 1991 she joined the Dambuilders who were signed to Elektra Records in 1994. After they disbanded Joan played in several groups. In 2002 she started a solo career under the name Joan As Police Woman which is a reference to the TV series โ€œPolice Womanโ€ starring Angie Dickinson. Joan found the actress inspirational as "she was really powerful but sexy at the same time" in the role.
Since 2004 she has released eight regular studio albums, one EP and almost 30 singles. Throughout her career Joan has regularly collaborated with other artists as a writer, performer and arranger. Her resume includes live performances and studio work with Elton John, Lou Reed, Sheryl Crow, Depeche Mode frontman Dave Gahan and Scissor Sisters to name but a few.
Last year Joan As Police Woman released a cover version of Talk Talk's โ€œLife's what you make itโ€, a song that has already been covered by Placebo in 2016.

Shortly after the โ€œMedsโ€ tour had ended, Placebo were part of Project Revolution. It was a travelling music festival in the USA that brought artists of various genres together.

Brian, Stefan and Steve Hewitt weren't in a healthy state of mind after a long time of excessive drug abuse during the production of โ€œMedsโ€ and the following one and a half years of touring with the album.โ€It was a tough time, but that Project Revolution tour was the death knell for what we call Placebo Mk. II,โ€ Brian stated in an interview with Altpresscom in June 2009 (Placebo Mk. II means Placebo with Steve Hewitt as drummer).
The Project Revolution tour was quite short, it started on 25th of July 2007 and included only 29 performances. The last show took place on September 3rd 2007 in Greenwood Village in Colorado.

๐Ÿ“ข "Well, we started this tour with a lot of bravado because weโ€™d spent 18 months touring the world, preaching to the choir. We walked out on stage in Seattle dressed in our French designer clothing, like we would in Europe, played our melancholic songs and then went down like a complete lead balloon. We had to really rethink it. It took us about four gigs to find the right set [of songs]. I think we realized that at 5 p.m. in the afternoon Linkin Park and My Chemical Romance fans didnโ€™t want to be wooed with melancholia; they wanted to be slapped across the face with noisy guitars. So weโ€™re doing a very kind of punk rock show featuring songs we havenโ€™t played in years, such as โ€œPure Morningโ€ and โ€œNancy Boy.โ€

It was an annual music festival hosted by the alternative rock band Linkin Park. It brought artists of various genres of music together. Linkin Park started the festival in 2002 with one stage. Two years later they announced a second one, the Revolution Stage, where smaller bands and artists performed.
For 2007, the year Placebo were part of Project Revolution, Linkin Park decided to make the tour ostensibly "green" by donating $1 of every ticket to American Forests. They also used biodiesel on a majority of their buses, and eliminated an estimated 350 tons of carbon emissions that way.
Gerard Way, lead singer of My Chemical Romance was married backstage after the final show of the 2007 tour.

Some of them have gone down in history and others are still with him. Do you want to discover which ones? Well, then let's get started!

The first guitar I ever owned was an ESP Telecaster. When we started the band I had a Japanese reissue Fender jaguar, and I was just playing through a crappy little Fender practice amp. Then I moved on to some Marshall combos.

๐ŸŽค I've got three Fender Jaguars, one Fender Jazz master and two Gibson SG's, and they're all older than me. That's very important. The Jags are all women, and they all have names: "Bitch," "Goddess" and "Tattoo". For amps I use a Marshall stack and a Fender Twin to get a fuller, richer sound. My effects setup is simple: Boss delay and Roger Mayer Voodoo Distortion; and I use the built-in overdrive on the Marshall. Occasionally our sound guy will put a Leslie [rotary speaker] effect or a big My Bloody Valentine kind of reverb effect on my guitar.

The case of this guitar is quite interesting. For a long time I have seen on several sites dedicated to ๐‘ท๐’๐’‚๐’„๐’†๐’ƒ๐’, that when talking about "๐‘ป๐’‚๐’•๐’•๐’๐’" they refer to the ๐‘ฎ๐’Š๐’ƒ๐’”๐’๐’ ๐‘บ๐‘ฎ guitar with a blue and silver sticker that ๐‘ฉ๐’“๐’Š๐’‚๐’ uses to play the songs "๐‘พ๐’Š๐’•๐’‰๐’๐’–๐’• ๐’€๐’๐’– ๐‘ฐ'๐’Ž ๐‘ต๐’๐’•๐’‰๐’Š๐’๐’ˆ", "๐‘ฌ๐’—๐’†๐’“๐’š ๐’€๐’๐’– ๐‘ฌ๐’—๐’†๐’“๐’š ๐‘ด๐’†", "๐‘บ๐’‘๐’†๐’„๐’Š๐’‚๐’ ๐‘ต๐’†๐’†๐’…๐’”", etc; However, while I was preparing this post I came across a forum where a guy said that the red colored ๐‘ญ๐’†๐’๐’…๐’†๐’“ ๐‘ฑ๐’‚๐’ˆ๐’–๐’‚๐’“ with tortoiseshell pickguard is the guitar named "๐‘ป๐’‚๐’•๐’•๐’๐’" and that it was also ๐‘ฉ๐’“๐’Š๐’‚๐’'s second favorite and the sexiest one. Looking at the quote that opens this post, we realize that it is true: ๐‘ต๐‘ถ๐‘ป ๐’‚ ๐‘ฎ๐’Š๐’ƒ๐’”๐’๐’ ๐‘บ๐‘ฎ, as has always been rumored.

๐ŸŽค โ€œIโ€™d like to say a few words about this guitar. I call this guitar my "Baby". Itโ€™s from 1956 and itโ€™s the guitar that I do most of my writing on and I absolutely adore it. And itโ€™s beautifully damaged. Itโ€™s a Japanese concept called "wabi-sabi" which means that perfection is in the imperfection. And the way this guitar looks represents that perfectly for me.โ€

Of course, he has many more guitars; However, the ones we have seen are the ones he has shared more details about, besides, as he has said in the last quote, not all of them have a name.
Thank you so much for reading, I hope you have found this post interesting.

Dear soulmates,
Today Iโ€™d like to talk to you about Brianโ€™s deep interest in Eastern philosophy, generally, and Buddhism, in particular. Last Tuesday, I started the topic a little bit with Brianโ€™s amazing version of the Beatlesโ€™ song ๐€๐œ๐ซ๐จ๐ฌ๐ฌ ๐“๐ก๐ž ๐”๐ง๐ข๐ฏ๐ž๐ซ๐ฌ๐ž that has some Buddhist reference in it. Now, I collected a couple of quotes to illustrate his way to accepting this kind of a world view from previously being raised as a born-again Christian by his mother.

๐๐ซ๐ข๐š๐ง: ''When I was a kid I was raised a born-again Christian. [โ€ฆ] my Mum โ€ฆ was the person who got me into Jesus.''
(๐‘…๐‘œ๐‘๐‘˜ ๐‘†๐‘œ๐‘ข๐‘›๐‘‘, 30 ๐ด๐‘๐‘Ÿ๐‘–๐‘™ 2009)

๐๐ซ๐ข๐š๐ง: โ€œI was raised a born-again Christian. I gave my life over to Jesus when I was 11; took it back when I was 14. But that stays with you for a long time.

After a period of rebellion against his religious education, young Brian became more and more interested in spirituality and humanism rather that any kind of specific religion. However, Buddhist attitude to life, world and people got to be the most attractive and acceptable to him.
Brian took his first longer travel to India when he was on a pretty dark side in his life and desperately needed a cardinal change โ€“ just to surviveโ€ฆ Staying there appeared to be very helpful for him.
๐๐ซ๐ข๐š๐ง: "I lived in India for four months at the end of our previous tour [Black Market Music tour]. [...] I have never seen people so kind and generous elsewhere than in Asia. The less you have and the more you give โ€ฆ What I like in Buddhism, in opposition to the Judeo-Christian religion, is that ... here, you are punished for your sins, while there, you are punished by your sins, it weighs on your karma. And it seems more realistic to me."
(๐‘ƒ๐‘Ž๐‘Ÿ๐‘–๐‘  ๐‘€๐‘Ž๐‘ก๐‘โ„Ž, 2006)

It was exactly the time when ๐’๐จ๐ง๐  ๐ญ๐จ ๐’๐š๐ฒ ๐†๐จ๐จ๐๐›๐ฒ๐ž was written.
๐๐ซ๐ข๐š๐ง: "The theme of โ€œSong to say goodbyeโ€ is keeping only the best aspects of your life. It's the first track I wrote in India. I went there for a lot of reasons, one of them being to try and change my lifestyle. I wanted to make me understand that I should not become a rock'n'roll clichรฉ and that the world doesn't need another dead rock star. I've written it as a letter to myself."
(๐‘…๐‘œ๐‘๐‘˜ ๐‘€๐‘Ž๐‘”, ๐ด๐‘๐‘Ÿ๐‘–๐‘™ 2006)

And I think if we stopped to actually understand the effects that we have on the world, then we would make the world a better place. Unfortunately, as people weโ€™re all very emotional and our culture is very important in terms of what we choose to believe.
I think so many people have ghetto-ised religion and made it into something that is bad, but in fact itโ€™s something that helps us all be better people and thatโ€™s what we want.

๐๐ซ๐ข๐š๐ง: Iโ€™m interested in Buddhism because it is a philosophy of life rather than a religion. In Buddhism, thereโ€™s no god and that is a big part of the attraction for me. Right thoughts, right action. No god, no attachments - no worries.

PLACEBO BACKSTAGE WITH DAVID BOWIE

๐Ÿ”ธ๐ŸŒŸ๐Ÿ”ธThere are never enough beautiful and touching memories.๐Ÿ”ธ๐ŸŒŸ๐Ÿ”ธ

Dear friends, my post today will be about one such memory.
๐Ÿ”ธ๐ŸŒŸOn March 29, 1999, Placebo performed at Irving Plaza in New York, and at the end of the concert, they invited their famous mentor David Bowie to the stage. Before this concert, however, Stefan picked up the camera and recorded something amazing backstage. ๐ŸŒŸ๐Ÿ”ธ
Every time I see this video that I share with you in this post, I feel a warm feeling of love and mutual respect in my heart.

๐Ÿ”ธ๐ŸŒŸFar Out Magazine has published a very beautiful article on these early shots, which I bring to you today this beautiful summer evening.
I wish you a pleasant reading and look forward to your comments, for example about your feelings from this video, because you already know mine.๐ŸŒŸ๐Ÿ”ธ

๐Ÿ”ธ๐Ÿ”ธ๐ŸŒŸ๐Ÿ”ธ๐Ÿ”ธ
๐Ÿ“ŒWatch backstage footage of Placebo's Brian Molko and David Bowie jamming 'Without You I'm Nothing'

The relationship Placeboโ€™s Brian Molko and the iconic Starman, David Bowie, shared is perfectly encapsulated in the rarely seen backstage footage of the pair rehearsing โ€˜Without You Iโ€™m Nothingโ€™ before a show in 1999.

The clip was shared by the band shortly after the singerโ€™s death in 2016 and remains as a candid view of the touching friendship and tutorship Placebo shared with The Thin White Duke.

Placebo and David Bowie, upon reflection, are a match made in heaven. The bandโ€™s subversion of Britpop and the laddish culture that swirled around Britain in the mid-nineties was exactly the kind of thing a young David Bowie would have done. A pursuit of artistic merit over everything else, Placebo and Bowie were aligned.

Bowie has never been one to keep his mouth shut about music he found important and he sought out the stylings of Placebo and had them open for his Outsider Tour in 1995. They would quickly begin working with each other in the studio too. The band welcoming Bowie on the 1998 single release of the title track of their second record Without You Iโ€™m Nothing.

Screenshot

A swirling and darkly tipped murder ballad, Molkoโ€™s vocals are an imposing force, only to be backed by Bowieโ€™s iconic cadence on the second verse. The song remains to this day as a commendation on Placeboโ€™s eclectic and eccentric contribution to rock music.

In the clip above we see the moments before Bowie is about to join Placebo on stage at Irving Plaza in New York. Molko and Bowie sit across from each other and jam out the song they had recorded a few months prior and the most notable thing of all is the complete and utter adoration in Molkoโ€™s eyes. The duo would share the stage again at the BRITs in 1999 for a performance of T-Rexโ€™s โ€™20th Century Boyโ€™.

Molko wrote a letter to Bowie after the singerโ€™s death that was a beautiful tribute to their friendship: โ€œWherever you are now, I miss you. Not only do I miss you but my heart is broken. You were my idol, then you became my mentor and my friend.โ€

โ€œI learnt so much from you, just by being in your presence, the conversations we had and, of course, watching you perform. You always had time for me. My band and I were tiny when we first met. Nonetheless , you took us under your wing. You believed in us and gifted us with so many fantastic opportunities.โ€

โ€œWithout you, your tutelage and your wisdom, I donโ€™t think I would be where I am today, as an artist but also as a person. For that I will be eternally grateful.โ€

The video shows Bowie his usual affable self, keen to impose only his artistic will and putting his ego aside, he sings through the track alongside Molko. This is the beautiful thing about this clip, while Molko stares at Bowie with the starry eyes of a real fan, Bowie is unaffected as always and is as open and willing to learn as youโ€™d expect a school boy on his first day at school.

Watch the moment Brian Molko and David Bowie jammed out โ€˜Without You Iโ€™m Nothingโ€™.๐Ÿ“Œ

And here's a video where you can see Placebo and David live on stage in New York and an interview where David talks about the band.

PLACEBO'S DEBUT ALBUM

Today let's have a closer look on what the band think about their self-titled debut album. โ€œPlaceboโ€ included ten songs and a hidden track and was released on June 12th 1996. Brian said that the record was very much about sex and full of youthful vigour and lust.

The album was produced by Brad Wood and recorded in Dublin, Ireland. In an interview Brian remembered that they were drinking a lot of Guinness when they worked on the songs: โ€œDublin is like the pub that stay open all day every day so a lot of black stuff was consumedโ€ (see quotes below).

โ€œPlaceboโ€ is the only album that was recorded with the band's first drummer Robert Schultzberg. It was a respectable commercial success, as it peaked no. 5 in the UK and reached Platinum status for more than 300.000 sold copies. Five singles were released from the album (โ€œCome homeโ€, โ€œ36 degreesโ€œ, โ€œTeenage Angstโ€œ, โ€œNancy Boyโ€œand โ€œBruise Pristineโ€œ).

To see how Brian and Stefan feel about their first long-player I picked quite a few statements they made over the years. There's only one quote by Stef, but I put Brian's interview excerpts in chronological order, so you can see how his opinion on it changed as the years went by.

๐Ÿ“ข "I have great affection for the characters in the songs, because to varying degrees they do have bits of me in them, and I think that the author's attitude towards his characters is not a judgmental one in any way. It's very affectionate, and it's filled with pathos. I think the album is like ten short stories, about the same thing, but from ten different points of view."
(Vox, February 1997)

๐Ÿ“ข "There's a lot of me in there. They're people I've been at one point in my life or emotion that I've felt. A combination of me and other people or me and a little spice. But I don't talk about anything which I haven't personally felt or experienced myself."
(Vox, February 1997)

๐Ÿ“ข "It's an exploration into somebody's misogyny yet heartfelt. It's angry, nasty, insulting and completely politically incorrect."
(Backbeat, March 1997)

๐Ÿ“ข "You run the risk on the first album of making a record that has one particular sound, that runs the whole way through it. And we wanted ours to be like a collection of short stories, approach every single song individually with the orchestration and vocal styles. We wanted to take you on a journey, an emotional rollercoaster, with little surprises here and there, instead of just having a blanket sound."
(Air & Style, January 1998)

๐Ÿ“ข "We didn't want to make pure punk record, we wanted to make something that was colourful. The moodswings and frissons of Placebo's songs were carefully textured, using analogue synths, and more unorthodox sounds from toy instruments and a didgeridoo. "
(Air & Style, 1998)

๐Ÿ“ข "People could really hate the record, it could really annoy them - which would be cool. Indifference about it would piss me off more."
(Air & Style, 1998)

๐Ÿ“ข โ€œYou know the first album dealt with sex, drugs and rock and roll. Crazy sex, wild sex, sex on drugs, all that. On โ€˜Without you I'm nothingโ€˜ we're dealing with the after effects of that.โ€œ
(Circus, May 1999)

๐Ÿ“ข โ€œI mean whatโ€™s strange about that record is that I think it was incredibly commercial. Weโ€™d kind of become less and less commercial with every album but somehow managed to sell more records, which I think is great. It seems that chasing this elusive pop hit isnโ€™t necessary. Just keep doing what you think is correct at the time and put as much honesty as possible, and then people stay loyal to what youโ€™re doing.โ€

๐Ÿ“ข โ€œWhat I remember, we were in Dublin in Ireland, so I remember drinking a lot of Guinness, a lot of fine Guinness, and putting on some weight because we drank so much Guinness but it was fun, it was good, yeah. Dublin is like the pub that stay open all day every day so a lot of black stuff was consumed. Oh, thatโ€™d be nice if I can get a pint of Guinness right now!โ€œ
(MTV Supersonic 2004)

๐Ÿ“ข โ€œWe wrote most of the album in a council flat in Deptford. The way we sounded and looked was a reaction against the place. But also a lot of our cross-dressing and transvestism was a political statement against the music scene at the time which was very laddish and macho. We wanted to stand up and be counted. There's no better way to do that than by putting a bunch of slap on, wearing a skirt and f***ing with people's heads. People hated us for it and I adored that. Not getting a reaction was an anathema to me at the time. When I look back at the album, I see naivety, missed opportunities and mistakes. But you can get your knickers in a twist about it or you can just accept they're part of you. I view "Nancy Boy" in a way I imagine Radiohead look at โ€žCreepโ€œ. I just wish the song that propelled us into the limelight had been a little bit better written. It's the lyrics that make me cringe most. They're me trying to find my feet.โ€œ

๐‘ฉ๐’“๐’Š๐’‚๐’: Yes, itโ€™s a Brian De Palma movie. Itโ€™s a bit based on the legend of the Phantom of the Opera, the Faustโ€™s story. It is basically the rock star who sells his soul to the Devil to be successful.

So my brother, my older brother, taught me how to play vinyl records. Like thisโ€ฆ Because he got the turn table before I did. What I particularly like about vinyl is the dimension, thatโ€™s a fetish for me.

I think that the way that youโ€™re physically involved in the act of putting the record in the turn table and playing it, it is very important.

๐‘ฉ๐’“๐’Š๐’‚๐’: yes yes, it takes me away, really, back to my childhood. When I was a kid, I got one big obsession: psychedelic music.

๐‘ณ๐’‚๐’–๐’“๐’‚: How old were you while listening to that?

๐‘ณ๐’‚๐’–๐’“๐’‚: ok!...

๐‘ฉ๐’“๐’Š๐’‚๐’: It was the central point of my rebellion! The psychedelia and stuffs like thatโ€ฆ

The idea was to find a kind of free-your- mind thinking, creative freedom, live without any rulesโ€ฆ To be a hedonistic anarchist! Something like that, yes!

๐‘ณ๐’‚๐’–๐’“๐’‚: But itโ€™s something you still have?

๐‘ฉ๐’“๐’Š๐’‚๐’: Yes, I have it but, in fact, it caused me a lot of shit in my life!! But we all grow up eventually!

๐‘ณ๐’‚๐’–๐’“๐’‚: Maybe itโ€™s the Grateful Deadโ€™s fault!

๐‘ฉ๐’“๐’Š๐’‚๐’: They were a European psychedelic movement too. Those bands were the predecessors of Kraftwerk and electronic music. Can is kind of funky psychedelic. They are German. Itโ€™s โ€œKrautrockโ€*. I first listened to it at university, in London. It blew my mind because it was so strange.

A friend of mine got a huge collection of vinyls he had brought with him. And we were in the same dorm.

Letโ€™s see. For Germans, they are almost funkyโ€ฆ

I started to discover a whole world of possibilitiesโ€ฆ The idea of some shades (meaning sounds) which arenโ€™t well together but which are fascinating. And I think thatโ€™s what I still try to find in modern music, and I am increasingly disappointed.

We canโ€™t stop with psychedelic music without playing this Parliamentโ€™s song

๐‘ณ๐’‚๐’–๐’“๐’‚: a great discovery!

๐‘ฉ๐’“๐’Š๐’‚๐’: Yes, great discovery! Because if you enter โ€œPLACEBOโ€ in ITunes, youโ€™ll get, of course our band, but also this โ€œParliamentโ€ album which Iโ€™ve always loved! The band I mean because I donโ€™t even know this album! Iโ€™ve never listened to it in my whole life. โ€œParliament vs the Placebo Syndrome.โ€

๐‘ณ๐’‚๐’–๐’“๐’‚: Itโ€™s destiny. Youโ€™ve just found it by chance among thousands of vinyls.

๐‘ฉ๐’“๐’Š๐’‚๐’: Yes, just at the last minute! Letโ€™s see! I hope itโ€™s funky

So, letโ€™s leave psychedelic and listen to some more modern music. A little bit of โ€œpost punkโ€. On this album, here is Iggy Pop. According to me, itโ€™s a kind of a bridge between psychedelic - Rock- Punk and post punk music, which has really influenced me, and also my band.

Here is a classic song very wild. โ€œSearch and Destroyโ€. OK?

๐‘ณ๐’‚๐’–๐’“๐’‚: Alright [already in English]!

๐‘ณ๐’‚๐’–๐’“๐’‚: During the song, you told me โ€œListen to thatโ€ when he says โ€œIโ€™m using technologyโ€. Why is that important to you?

๐‘ฉ๐’“๐’Š๐’‚๐’: Because itโ€™s so old! 1973! When you think about how technology rules our lives these days, the vision Iggy had, to be under this shadow at that time. Itโ€™s wow!

๐‘ณ๐’‚๐’–๐’“๐’‚: How do you feel when you think about the fact you were listening to this music when you were young? You were learning, you were dreaming of being a musician. And now youโ€™re a part of this history. Do you realize that?

๐‘ฉ๐’“๐’Š๐’‚๐’: Not really. I canโ€™t compare myself to the legendary rock n roll history! Maybe because modern celebrity culture, to me, is less important than the old one. They had to create such progressive things and work so hard for people to listen to them. Itโ€™s quite not the same today. Maybe I feel a bit like a victim of my generation.

To me, weโ€™ve been through punk, and then here we are in the U.S., with post punk, new wave music. Iโ€™d say itโ€™s when the punk began to be a bit more โ€œold schoolโ€ [already in English], a bit more experimental. It changed the way we listened to guitars. So โ€œPere Ubuโ€ a very, very strange band.

๐‘ฉ๐’“๐’Š๐’‚๐’: But whatโ€™s going on here??!!

๐‘ณ๐’‚๐’–๐’“๐’‚: Whatโ€™s happening

๐‘ฉ๐’“๐’Š๐’‚๐’: The great thing with the vinyls, which started to disappear leaving its place to CDs, is that you can have the cover in your hands while listening. You can watch it, touch it. You can create a whole story with the details of the cover! I feel a bit nostalgic right now!!

๐‘ณ๐’‚๐’–๐’“๐’‚: I was going to say youโ€™re a bit nostalgic!

๐‘ฉ๐’“๐’Š๐’‚๐’: When I was 16, when I first listened to Sonic Youth, everything changed for me. Because before Sonic Youth guitars used to be rock guitars. And this [about Sonic Youth] was another world, something totally different. I would say itโ€™s our biggest influence. Especially in the beginning. OOooh, wow, you cannot have this with an MP3, uh!!!

You can hear here how Sonic Youth has totally changed the guitars. They put them โ€œupside downโ€ [already in English].
