𝑩𝒓𝒊𝒂𝒏: Yes, it’s a Brian De Palma movie. It’s a bit based on the legend of the Phantom of the Opera, the Faust’s story. It is basically the rock star who sells his soul to the Devil to be successful.

So my brother, my older brother, taught me how to play vinyl records. Like this… Because he got the turn table before I did. What I particularly like about vinyl is the dimension, that’s a fetish for me.

I think that the way that you’re physically involved in the act of putting the record in the turn table and playing it, it is very important.

𝑩𝒓𝒊𝒂𝒏: About 16. That was when I discovered Marijuana…

𝑩𝒓𝒊𝒂𝒏: It was the central point of my rebellion! The psychedelia and stuffs like that…

The idea was to find a kind of free-your- mind thinking, creative freedom, live without any rules… To be a hedonistic anarchist! Something like that, yes!

𝑳𝒂𝒖𝒓𝒂: But it’s something you still have?

𝑩𝒓𝒊𝒂𝒏: Yes, I have it but, in fact, it caused me a lot of shit in my life!! But we all grow up eventually!

𝑳𝒂𝒖𝒓𝒂: Maybe it’s the Grateful Dead’s fault!

𝑩𝒓𝒊𝒂𝒏: They were a European psychedelic movement too. Those bands were the predecessors of Kraftwerk and electronic music. Can is kind of funky psychedelic. They are German. It’s “Krautrock”*. I first listened to it at university, in London. It blew my mind because it was so strange.

A friend of mine got a huge collection of vinyls he had brought with him. And we were in the same dorm.

Let’s see. For Germans, they are almost funky…

I started to discover a whole world of possibilities… The idea of some shades (meaning sounds) which aren’t well together but which are fascinating. And I think that’s what I still try to find in modern music, and I am increasingly disappointed.

So, let’s leave psychedelic and listen to some more modern music. A little bit of “post punk”. On this album, here is Iggy Pop. According to me, it’s a kind of a bridge between psychedelic - Rock- Punk and post punk music, which has really influenced me, and also my band.

𝑳𝒂𝒖𝒓𝒂: During the song, you told me “Listen to that” when he says “I’m using technology”. Why is that important to you?

𝑩𝒓𝒊𝒂𝒏: Because it’s so old! 1973! When you think about how technology rules our lives these days, the vision Iggy had, to be under this shadow at that time. It’s wow!

𝑳𝒂𝒖𝒓𝒂: How do you feel when you think about the fact you were listening to this music when you were young? You were learning, you were dreaming of being a musician. And now you’re a part of this history. Do you realize that?

𝑩𝒓𝒊𝒂𝒏: Not really. I can’t compare myself to the legendary rock n roll history! Maybe because modern celebrity culture, to me, is less important than the old one. They had to create such progressive things and work so hard for people to listen to them. It’s quite not the same today. Maybe I feel a bit like a victim of my generation.

To me, we’ve been through punk, and then here we are in the U.S., with post punk, new wave music. I’d say it’s when the punk began to be a bit more “old school” [already in English], a bit more experimental. It changed the way we listened to guitars. So “Pere Ubu” a very, very strange band.

𝑩𝒓𝒊𝒂𝒏: The great thing with the vinyls, which started to disappear leaving its place to CDs, is that you can have the cover in your hands while listening. You can watch it, touch it. You can create a whole story with the details of the cover! I feel a bit nostalgic right now!!

𝑳𝒂𝒖𝒓𝒂: I was going to say you’re a bit nostalgic!

𝑩𝒓𝒊𝒂𝒏: When I was 16, when I first listened to Sonic Youth, everything changed for me. Because before Sonic Youth guitars used to be rock guitars. And this [about Sonic Youth] was another world, something totally different. I would say it’s our biggest influence. Especially in the beginning. OOooh, wow, you cannot have this with an MP3, uh!!!

You can hear here how Sonic Youth has totally changed the guitars. They put them “upside down” [already in English].

¿Qué? Esta es una de mis películas favoritas, estoy obsesionado con una de sus canciones “Old Souls”

𝑩𝒓𝒊𝒂𝒏: ¡Sí! Es de Brian De Palma, está basada en el Fantasma de la ópera, la leyenda de Fausto, es básicamente la estrella de rock que vende su alma al diablo para conseguir el éxito.

Mi hermano, mi hermano mayor, fue quién me enseñó a usar los álbumes como este ya que él tuvo el tocadiscos antes que yo. Lo que me gusta particularmente del álbum es la dimensión, es como un fetiche para mí.

Creo que la forma en la que se coloca el disco físicamente es muy importante para mí.

𝑳𝒂𝒖𝒓𝒂: ¿Cuántos años tenías cuando escuchabas esta música?

𝑩𝒓𝒊𝒂𝒏: Como 16, eso fue cuando descubrí la marihuana.

𝑳𝒂𝒖𝒓𝒂: ¡Ok!

𝑩𝒓𝒊𝒂𝒏: Lo psicodélico fue el punto central de mi rebelión.

La idea era encontrar una manera de pensamiento que fuera liberador de la mente, una libertad creativa, vivir sin reglas… Ser un anarquista hedonístico, algo así.

𝑳𝒂𝒖𝒓𝒂: Pero es algo que todavía sientes.

𝑩𝒓𝒊𝒂𝒏: Si, todavía, de hecho me trajo muchos problemas en la vida, pero todos tenemos que crecer en algún punto.

𝑳𝒂𝒖𝒓𝒂: Tal vez es culpa de The Grateful Dead.

𝑩𝒓𝒊𝒂𝒏: Ellos formaron parte de un movimiento psicodélico europeo. Esas bandas precedieron a Kraftwerk y la música electrónica. Can es algo así como una “psicodelia funky” . Eran alemanes parte del “𝘒𝘳𝘢𝘶𝘵𝘳𝘰𝘤𝘬”*. Lo escuché por primera vez en Londres cuando estaba en la universidad, y me sorprendió porque era tan extraño.

Un amigo tenía una colección de discos impresionante y vivíamos en la misma residencia universitaria.

Veamos para los alemanes es casi “funky”.

Comencé a descubrir todo un mundo de posibilidades. La idea de algunos “colores, sonidos” que no combinan pero que son fascinantes. Y pienso que todavía trato de encontrar eso en la música moderna pero cada vez me desilusiono más.

No podemos dejar la música psicodélica sin tocar esta canción de Parliament.

𝑳𝒂𝒖𝒓𝒂: Un gran descubrimiento.

𝑩𝒓𝒊𝒂𝒏: Sí, un gran descubrimiento, porque cuando buscas Placebo en ITunes siempre te sale, claro mi banda, y también éste álbum de Parliament que siempre adoré, me refiero a la banda porque nunca he escuchado éste disco. “Parliament vs the Placebo Syndrome.”

𝑳𝒂𝒖𝒓𝒂: Es el destino. Lo has encontrado dentro de miles de discos…

𝑩𝒓𝒊𝒂𝒏: De hecho, el funk es como una almohada. Cuando escuchas esta música te sientes en medio de almohadas funky, no sé por qué, es increíble.

Dejemos lo psicodélico y escuchemos algo más moderno. Un poco de post punk Iggy Pop. Creo que es un puente entre el punk rock psicodélico y la música post punk, que realmente ha influenciado tanto a mi banda como a mí.

Este es un clásico, muy loco, “Search and Destroy”

𝑩𝒓𝒊𝒂𝒏: Porque es tan antigua, 1973, cuando piensas en la manera en que la tecnología maneja nuestras vidas ahora, la visión que tuvo Iggy de estar bajo esa sombra, ¡es Wao!

𝑳𝒂𝒖𝒓𝒂: ¿Cómo te sientes al pensar que tú escuchabas esta música cuando eras joven? Estabas aprendiendo y soñando con ser músico y ahora eres parte de esa historia. ¿Te das cuenta de eso?

𝑩𝒓𝒊𝒂𝒏: No realmente, No me puedo comparar con la historia legendaria del Rock and Roll , tal vez se deba a la cultura moderna de la celebridad para mí la hace menos importante. Ellos tuvieron que crear música progresista y trabajar tanto para que la gente los escuchara. Ahora no es igual. Tal vez me siento un poco como una víctima de mi generación.

Para mí hemos pasado por el punk, y luego nos encontramos en EEUU con el post punk, la música new wave, cuando el punk comenzó a ser de la vieja escuela, un poco más experimental. Cambió la manera en la que escuchamos las guitarras. “Pere Ubu” una banda muy extraña.

𝑩𝒓𝒊𝒂𝒏: La maravilla de los discos, que empezó a desaparecer para dar paso a los cds, es que puedes tener la caratula en tus manos mientras lo escuchas y ver todo los detalles. La puedes ver, tocar, y crear toda una historia con los detalles de la carátula. Me entró algo de nostalgia.

𝑳𝒂𝒖𝒓𝒂: te iba a decir que estabas algo nostálgico.

𝑩𝒓𝒊𝒂𝒏: cuando tenía 16 y escuché a Sonic Youth por primera vez , todo cambió para mí. Porque antes de Sonic Youth las guitarras eran sólo guitarras, y esto era un mundo aparte, algo completamente diferente . Yo diría que ha sido nuestra mayor influencia, especialmente en el comienzo. ¡Oh waow esto no pasa en un mp3!

Aquí puedes escuchar como Sonic Youth cambió por completo el estilo de las guitarras, las ponen de cabeza.

𝑩𝒓𝒊𝒂𝒏: Creo que es la mayor influencia en nuestro sonido. Ellos son la banda que queríamos ser pero no fuimos.

Como última canción voy a escoger una de Nina Simone porque siempre le he dicho a mi familia y amigos que esta canción es con la que más me puedo identificar. El coro… básicamente me describe, soy yo. “I’m just a soul whose intentions are good, oh lord, please don’t let me be misunderstood” (sólo soy un alma con buenas intenciones, por favor Señor, no me dejes ser incomprendida) Quisiera que esta canción sonara en mi funeral.
