Do you remember the spirited Brian with a short cheerful hairstyle and strongly made-up eyes, thanks to which I lost the firm ground under my feet and forgot about the reality around me ...
It was a tour with then new album "Sleeping With Ghosts" on which music with a typical Placebo signature took on a completely new dimension thanks to the electronic arrangement of producer Jim Abiss ...
๐Ÿ“Œ "The electronic element is indeed very present in Sleeping With Ghosts, but I think when we listen to the album, we don't have the feeling Placebo is trying to sound electronic. We tried above all to refine and reconcile all the best elements which we experimented on our three previous albums, while trying to make this album current. 2003, not 1968."

Brian: "This album is a bit of a wild card. I actually like this record because it's one of most sonically daring and electronic sounding records. It's the perfect mixture of what we were trying to do, which was fuse our sound with vintage synthesizers and old school analog recording techniques. It was around that time that Stefan and I began our obsession with old synthesizers, and we just couldn't stop collecting. A vintage synth is a very guilty pleasure for us. We find them very sexy and irresistible to buy if we see one, even if we don't need it."
๐Ÿ”ธThe ghosts in the title seem to detail a number of your past relationships, or the ghosts of them.
Brian: "Yeah, if I remember correctly, I was trying to lyrically explore memory and how reliable, how truthful memories are. Both the visual memories you re-experience but also your emotional memories, and I guess I was asking myself the question, "How accurate is it?" I think in one way or another, as time passes, we become film directors with our memories. We do our own director's cut of what's happened to us, and within that was this aspect of meditating the past romantic experiences and trying to sing about them in as abstract way as possible"
๐Ÿ”ธWere you happy with the results?
Brian: "Yeah. I remember being very happy. I felt that record had a lot of color to it, so it pleased me at the time. Sorry, I never look back so this is hard."

๐Ÿ”ธ P: Triple J Breakfast, we’re joined by Brian Molko from Placebo... Brian, when we’re doing this interview, it’s the day of your Sydney concert on your tour, that you’re going around... It’s about 1:30 in the afternoon, where does this put you in the preparation for a gig night? Do you start thinking about the gig during the day, or is it just, you know, half an hour before the gig? What’s the sort of preparation on a gig day?

Brian: "I don’t really start thinking about the gig until we actually get to sound check... You know, if we’re touring around Europe or something, in a tour bus... then you know, we’ll spend most of the day sleeping. We’ll probably get up around 3 and start sound checking around 4. Erm, on a day like this, you know, I chuckled to myself as I was on the beach this morning, you know, sunning myself... and swimming around in God’s swimming pool and thinking about how miserable and rainy it was in London, you know. So that’s kind of how I’ve prepared today’s gig, very very relaxed, you know, getting up early and getting some rays."

๐Ÿ”ธ P: Well, we’ve been playing English Summer Rain... It’s the single we’ve been playing at the moment for your tour. If you were going to write a song about an Australian weather condition, rather than English Summer Rain, what would you call the song?

Brian: "Oh God, I don’t know… Erm, “Sand in the vaseline”… How’s that one?"๐Ÿ˜

๐Ÿ”ธ P: Nice… So you said about the sound check, do you go through the same sort of thing each night, or do you do different things before the gig? Do you actually have a structure?

Brian: "Well… you kind of… because by nature what we do is very chaotic, and nomadic and we’re quite schizophrenic people, you know, you kind of crave a bit of a structure, you know, and erm... so what we normally do is sound check maybe for about 45 minutes and try and get an early dinner… because you can’t eat too close to show time, otherwise you feel heavy and you can still taste your dinner while you’re jumping around and trying to rock, you know. And then usually start having a couple of beers about two hours before the show, play some banging hip hop tunes and just try and get the energy levels up… take a lot of vitamins."

๐Ÿ”ธ P: People are going in the backstage at Placebo and they’re seeing these bowlfuls of pills… and it’s vitamin B1 and B2…

Brian: "Exactly, yeah."

๐Ÿ”ธ P: I always wondered this, how much does.. ‘cos I do stand up comedy and obviously, it’s very reliant on, you know, the audience… In a rock show, can it really make a big difference, between the audience being a good audience or a bad audience?

Brian: "Absolutely. You know, it’s kind of… it’s like sex, you know. It makes a big difference, you know, both…"

๐Ÿ”ธ P: If you’ve got an audience?!?

Brian: "No, not if you’ve got an audience, no!.. It’s like, you know, if somebody… if the person who you’re in bed with is making as much effort as you, you know, there’s nothing worse than a plank… You know, if you’ve made all that effort, all the drinks you’ve bought, you know, all the witticisms and charm you’ve put on, you know, kind of thing… there’s nothing worse than somebody that just lays there. And similarly… you know, and similarly with an audience, you know, you need… you need feedback from them, you need to have an exchange of energy, you know.. All good art, whether it’s painting, you know, or live music, you know, the artist takes a step towards the viewer or the audience… and they have to take a step towards them as well, for it to be a certain synergy."

๐Ÿ”ธ P: And your show is a lot like sex as in it’s good, if it goes on for an hour and a half, and if people clap enough you do an encore…

Brian: "Exactly." /.../

Like on most Wednesdays I want to share an ♦️๐ˆ๐๐“๐„๐‘๐•๐ˆ๐„๐–♦️ again. Brian gave this one to IQ Magazine in 2003 when Placebo were touring with their new album “Sleeping with ghosts”.

Do you want to know when Brian pulpified his first guitar, if he enjoys having contact with his fans and what his biggest fear is? If your curious for the answers to these questions you will definitely enjoy reading the interview.

Hotel Persona essentially started when Stefan and David Amen decided to spice up their friends house parties in London by providing dance tunes to get people shaking their butts. They sporadically composed songs and did performances and dj sets for their friends.

Then Stefan and David began DJ work under the name Hotel Persona. They kept themselves busy being invited to deejay around Europe. After a while a collection of songs screamed to be recorded, metaphorically speaking, and Javier Solo was recruited to sing Spanish vocals. Stefan, after years of developing his vocal tone with Placebo, sang the English versions.

The Spanish debut album “En Las Nubes“ was released May 2008. “In the clouds“, the English version of the album, followed in June. It was a co-production of Stefan and Fabien Waltmann, who remixed “Infra-red“ for Placebo in 2006. The songs were recorded and mixed in London, Madrid and New York over two years (2005-2007) and feature additional vocals from various artists like for example Samantha Fox, Miguel Bosรฉ and of course Brian Molko.

Hotel Persona also remixed some Placebo songs and various other bands, including Queens of the Stone Age and She Wants Revenge.

๐Ÿ“ข ”Hotel Persona is a side-project, when I'm not doing Placebo. I explore more of the entertainment side of making music, you know, it's more electro and it's more dance and a bit more pop-oriented. There would be no point in doing another Placebo. I mean on the first album, I got Samantha Fox in there! I guess as a musician not everything I write is going to be right for Placebo. Saying that, whenever I write a song, it always goes to Brian first and it's like "hey, do you feel this?" If he does feel it, then it becomes a Placebo song and if not, it becomes something for Hotel Persona.”

๐Ÿ“ข ”Stef DJs under the name of Hotel Persona, and has made a record as well. I think that's definitely an outlet for him, for an aspect of his musicality which he can't explore in Placebo, and which is much more gay disco. I guess that's why Hotel Persona exists, to satisfy that aspect of his musical taste and his desire to express himself in that way.”

Modern kids future freaks
Following media beats
Everything is on the screen
Can't find a space
The computer erased your heart

We are modern kids
Living through a screen

No need to scour the streets
Your father is out drinking while
Your mother is home reading the bible
And you
are on your own

Go ahead let your sun shine
You've got to do it your own way
Run away don't hesitate
Run away, go run away, go run away

Tenement kids flying on E
Pretending they don't give a sh*t
Dancing for something to be
So out of place
The computer erased their hearts

We are modern kids
Living through a screen

Grabbing today because tomorrow
Is too far away
and you are alone

Go ahead let your sun shine
[They're gonna get you]
You've got to do it your own way
[Not gonna let you go]
Run away don't hesitate
[They're gonna mess you up]
Run away go run away, go run away
[Not gonna let you be yourself]

Run away, run away

run awaaaaay
[They're gonna tell you]
Run away
[Try to persuade you]
[They're always fucking with your head]

Go ahead let your sun shine
You've got to do it your own way
Run away don't hesitate
Run away go run away

Run away
Grabbing today because tomorrow is too far away

That's right dear soulmates, my post today is dedicated to "๐‘ฉ๐’Š๐’•๐’„๐’‰", ๐‘ฉ๐’“๐’Š๐’‚๐’ ๐‘ด๐’๐’๐’Œ๐’'s favorite guitar, a beautiful red-colored ๐‘ญ๐’†๐’๐’…๐’†๐’“ ๐‘ฑ๐’‚๐’ˆ๐’–๐’‚๐’“ that like all ๐‘ฉ๐’“๐’Š๐’‚๐’'s guitars is female and older than him. I want to make music which moves people emotionally, which has an emotional significance and an emotional weight.
As a performer. I have to place myself in an incredibly vulnerable position - I stand on stage and bleed my heart out to 2,000 strangers and I have to reap the consequences of that afterwards, whether they're good or bad. And it's fine, because if that's what I have to do for the music to be as honest as possible, then that's what I have to do.
The qualities which I attach to Placebo's music - honesty, vulnerability, fragility and humanity - are the qualities which attract people to us, because we're not hiding behind any macho posturings of rock or hiding behind irony and things like that.
I'd like to think of Placebo's music as being very real."

On July 5th, the Gorky Park will host the Svoy Subbotnik festival which will feature Kasabian, Metronomy, Miles Kane, Jamie Woon, Tesla Boy, Naadya and The Uchpochmack (Zemfira's new project). Metro's questions have been answered by Brian Molko, frontman of Placebo, the show's main headliner.

Serious question. I’d say that the most significant thing is that the band remain productive for a long time, that we refuse to leave the stage for a very long time. We can’t do anything else really. I never had an office job. I graduated from the university and right after that, I founded Placebo, started to write and play songs. That’s what I still do! But there are so many bands that started at the same time as us but then gave up and got a job. The thought that I would have to do the same seemed very depressing to me. At that point, we are like The Rolling Stones. They have enough money, they don't need to go on tours but they don't know what else they could do. It’s the same about us. And now, we as a band are in a very privileged position. Every time we release an album, people are interested in listening to our music. Even after these twenty years. This is incredible! And I’m very very grateful for that.

I think I improved in writing stories. Stories with their own characters. You can hear it on our latest album Loud Like Love. Paradoxically, the use of this literary technique makes the author more vulnerable and private in his songs.

I think it depends on a customer, doesn’t it?
An entire generation has grown up convinced that things which include a lot of work and money invested should be free. I think if you don’t buy music of your favourite band, they will no longer be able to make a living by playing music. The musicians will just quit and get other jobs. Like driving a cab or cleaning glasses at the bar.

When they jump off the stage, it can be quite dangerous. When they got out on the stage, then, it happened, they broke the equipment. We don’t approve of these actions! And, fortunately, there are fewer and fewer of them. But people still try to run out and hug me when I play on stage. But, damn it, man, why are you doing that? I'm trying to do my work here! Who among you doesn't know the band ๐’๐๐„๐€๐Š๐„๐‘ ๐๐ˆ๐Œ๐๐’?

Sneaker Pimps supported Placebo on the 2001 Black Market Music tour.
It is from that time that the well-known joint photos of both bands come.
This band is also known to Placebo fans from the remix of
๐‘ฌ๐’—๐’†๐’“๐’š ๐’€๐’๐’– ๐‘ฌ๐’—๐’†๐’“๐’š ๐‘ด๐’†, which was released on one of the two versions of this single for the album "Without You I'm Nothing" in 1999.

Chris Corner (born in 1974) and Liam Howe, members of the band, started meeting and composing music in the late 80's when they were very young. Chris Corner studied mathematics, astrophysics and also philosophy - even at the same university as Brian - at Goldsmiths College. But mainly because of his unfetteredness and desire not to become normal and to always be "alternative", it drew him to the life of an artist.

In 1994-5 (dates of origin vary on the Internet), the band Sneaker Pimps was formed, then still with the singer Kelli Ali. The style of music officially ranks among trip hop, the main representatives of which at the time were, for example, Portishead or Massive Attack. Sneaker Pimps is an alternative rock music mix with a very strong electronic track.
After the first very successful album called Becoming X, the singer leaves the band at the instigation of Chris Corner and her vocals are replaced by Chris himself.
The band will then release 2 more albums and then the workaholic Chris, bored with the band's inactivity, will turn his attention to his solo project "IAMX". As he himself says, the letter X has always been a symbol for him which fascinated him with its ambiguity.
๐Ÿ”น⭐๐Ÿ”น
Anyway, in 2001 Sneaker Pimps joined Placebo and they played a lot of perfect concerts on this tour.
For all those who have no idea about the music of Sneaker Pimps, here I share a link to one of the songs at the Benicassim Festival 2001

And those who miss this band - maybe you know, maybe not, but Sneaker Pimps have reunited and are about to release a single in July, which will herald a new album coming out in fall.

And now I want to share with you a short excerpt of an interview where Chris recalls a concert in Warsaw, Poland during a tour with Placebo and mentions Brian:

๐Ÿ“ŒAt the beginning I would like to talk about your first concert in Poland. In 2001, you supported Placebo in Warsaw, and I remember that I liked the Sneaker Pimps concert much more than Placebo.
Chris: (laughs) Thank you.

Do you remember that evening?
Chris: Yes, perfectly. It was a great concert. I remember you guys were really crazy. It was amazing (laughs)! The crowd in the full club was moving like a big wave. An impressive sight. I also remember that at one point Brian ran up and down the balcony above the hall, and people stopped listening to us. Actually, I don't know why he did it... The concert was really great, and then Brian ruined everything ... Was it going too well and he didn't like it?

I remember that moment exactly!
Chris: Do you remember? Then I thought, "What are you dude doing?" Later we finished this track and left the stage because there was no point in playing anymore ...

I was so pissed at him because you were doing great, you have conquered the audience, and he fucked everything up. I wouldn't like to use obscene words here, but that wasn't pretty behavior...
Chris: You're right... Thanks for the warm words (laughs). But anyway, it was a fantastic evening. /.../
(Muzyka.interia.pl, August 2006)

And another excerpt from the concert review:
๐Ÿ“Œ/.../ At around 8 p.m. support appeared on stage. SNEAKER PIMPS played 8 songs. They played 45 minutes and presented themselves very well with their electronic-trip-hop rock. Even during the last number of support in the aisle at the top, behind the column, Brian showed up in the company of a few people. The audience went crazy. Totally ignored Sneaker Pimps. The uproar was enormous, although not everyone saw Molko at that moment. Placebo's vocalist ran quickly to reveal himself in all his glory and, arousing the admiration of more people, hid behind the door.
(Wywrota.pl, April 2001)
๐Ÿ”น⭐๐Ÿ”น
So, dear soulmates, what do you say to what Brian did to the band Sneaker Pimps? Do you think he was really jealous of their success or just needed to make a joke?๐Ÿ˜
Anyway, here in this interview, Chris mentions the Placebo guys very nicely (listen from the 13th minute, but the whole interview is amazing)
๐Ÿ“ฃ https://bit.ly/3zTHCPJ

As far as I know, fate has linked the artistic careers of Chris Corner and Placebo at least twice more:
An amazing song by Sneaker Pimps "6 Underground" was used to promote the film "Cruel Intentions" in which we could also hear Placebo song "Every You Every Me".

And in 2005, Chris composed and produced music for the French film Les Chevaliers du ciel (Sky Fighters). This soundtrack features 9 of Chris' songs (two with his girlfriend Sue Denim) and four others include The Crawl by Placebo.
๐Ÿ’—Thanks Chris - this album is absolutely amazing for me.
According to many reviews, Chris's soundtrack took this film to a higher level which it would not have reached without his music.
You can listen to the whole soundtrack here:

๐Ÿ”น⭐๐Ÿ”น
Dear friends, perhaps I have brought you nice memories today and focused your attention on the man who is definitely worth it. He is an artist who adores his fans, likes to be carried away by their energy, he always addresses them "my beauties" and gets their absolute ecstasy back. I like the description of a Czech presenter who interviewed Chris in 2006.
I say goodbye to you today with her words:

๐Ÿ“Œ „When Chris Corner, the central character of the I AM X project, fixes his dark brown eyes on you, you can't help but get lost in that look. But when the former Sneaker Pimps singer speaks, you'll calm down right away. He speaks in a focused, balanced and intelligible manner; as if he didn't even have to think about words. Affect and pathos which at times feel from his music, do not seem to exist.
He is not tall and with a small, fragile figure he looks a bit like your younger brother. Until you find out he will always have the upper hand. He's a star so natural that you can really believe that this person was born a celebrity.“

Placebo fans know him and his band because of “Pink water”, Brian's collaboration with Indochine officiel. There are three versions of the song, two of them feature Mr. Molko and were released on the album ”Alice & June Limited edition" in December 2005.

Nicolas Henri Didier Sirchis, better known as Nicola Sirkis, was born on June 22nd 1959 in Antony, Hauts-de-Seine in France. He is the frontman of the French pop rock and new wave band Indochine officiel. Sirkis is the only remaining member of the original line-up of the band which he formed with a friend in Paris in 1981. Up to now the band has released 13 studio albums, a good number of live albums and compilations and more than 50 singles. They have sold over ten million records which makes them one of the best selling French bands.

Sirkis' twin brother Stรจphane was a band member of Indochine until he died from hepatitis C in 1999 after years of struggling with drug addiction. Nicola still has an elder brother named Christophe..
Nicola Sirkis was married and divorced three times by now. He has a daughter and two sons.

๐™‹๐™š๐™ฃ๐™ฃ๐™ฎ:
A very difficult choice to pick some songs for you because of Indochine's long career and so many songs and live performances. Nicola is a very brilliant songwriter and the author of most of the lyrics of the songs. He has often admitted that he wasn't a good singer or a musician but it works!!! As you must know, Nicola is the only survivor of the band Indochine, created in 1981. He's the creator, the soul of the band. In my very humble opinion and as a fan for so many years, I think live performances are the best ways to express who Nicola Sirkis is as an artist, a performer and as a human being. So, I have chosen the most stunning, amazing and moving performances. But so difficult to make the best choice.

Indochine's first concert at le Stade de France, 80,000 people. The first French Rock band to perform in that huge place. A very moving performance, Nicola 's eyes full of tears. I watched that concert live on my PC. So GREAT!!! A DVD was released later luckily. It's called “Putain de Stade“ which means Fucking Stadium. It's not vulgar at all. It's a compliment. Usually when Nicola is happy, he often says fucking. Fucking audience, fucking concert, fucking Paris, fucking stadium, fucking...

Two concerts at the Stade de France, on June 27th and 28th 2014. My daughter Maud and I were there on June 27th. Enormous!!! On the next day, June 28th it was raining cats and dogs but according to some friends of ours who were there, it was even greater. I love this part of the concert because, Nicola is never afraid of walking through the crowd, hugging and kissing his fans while singing and of course been hugged and kissed back by his fans. It must be very dangerous but I think he loves that physical contact. And fans get really crazy. It's also a way to express his love and gratitude towards the audience. You must know, if Indochine is still there, it's not because of medias who after three great albums, threw the band away because Record Companies hadn't bet on the right horse. But the fans have always been there. Every concert has always been sold out in a few days without any publicity and now you need to be a warrior to get tickets. The 6 concerts in five huge stadiums in France for Indochine 40th anniversary, Central Tour 2021, have been sold out in a few hours. Unfortunately, impossible this year but for next year 2022. Maud and I will go to le Stade de France, Paris and Stade Pierre Maurois in Lille. That song, “Trois Nuits par Semaine“ has been inspired by a novel by Marguerite Duras, “L' Amant“ (“The lover“), a very sensual and erotic love story in the ancient French colony Indochina (in French Indochine), now called Vietnam. Nicola Sirkis loves Marguerite Duras 's novels.

“L' Aventurier“, that is the song which made Indochine famous from their very first album. The band have never stopped playing it live since its release. A kind of fireworks at the end of each concert with a collective crazy euphoria. That was the case at the Stade de France in 2014. The stadium was on fire and so were we!!! Confetti rain and balloons!! What a great souvenir !!! (Video from that DVD again, a mix of June 27th and 28th 2014) “L' Aventurier“ is a very naive song, dealing with a comic strip hero called Bob Morane. But what a music!!! It was very inoventive and unusual at that time. Through the years, songs have dealt with very serious topics, like homophobia, racism, discrimination, tolerance and understanding.

Now two official video clips which show how Nicola is very open-minded to tolerance and understanding. The first one is “Marilyn“ from album Paradize 2003. No comment, everything is said. It's with that album “Paradize“ that Indochine came back officially under the spotlights. Hypocrite TV journalists were kneeling and crawling before Nicola whereas a few years before they had thrown him into the mud. Indochine received a lot of rewards for this album but Nicola has always dedicated them to his audience because the music business didn't deserve his gratitude, specially when his twin brother, Stรฉphane died. I don't think Nicola has forgiven that attitude but he's never said a word. Ignorance is sometimes bitter than words. Hope those nasty sharks have understood the message.

The second official video: Christine and The Queen is a very talented young French singer, songwriter. Maybe you know her because she also has an international career. She's a lovely little Lady with a charming ambiguity, no wonder Nicola has asked her to make a re-make or cover version of that old song called “3รจme Sexe“. That song deals with: boys and girls, boys and boys, girls and girls. Brian would have said, in between. I know some old Indochine fans hate that version but I love it.

And now, If you don't mind, I want to add full concerts. Up to soulmates to watch them or not because Indochine usually last two hours and a half which is very great and generous, all the concerts are very cheap because it's Nicola 's priority to make them cheap in order to make any fan to be able to buy tickets. Nicola is the producer of these concerts, he manages everything, he's the boss. For these kind of events a lot of people are employed. It's a huge enterprise. Everyone is paid but no benefit is made. Nicola's aim is to make his fans having a good time, be happy and so is he and his talented band too. Let's never forget that.

A beautiful concert of Indochine in Hanoรฏ, Vietnam, 2006 with a symphonic orchestra. A special wink to our beloved Brian!!! I wish I could have shared Indochine 13 Tour concerts. My daughter Maud and I saw five of them in 2018, but there are no official videos, only videos by fans 's but they have no good quality . Amazing concerts with huge screens on the ceiling. I feel a bit disappointed just like not having official videos from Placebo's “20 Years“ Tour. But maybe, one day we'll enjoy those pearls.

A big ๐“๐‡๐€๐๐Š ๐˜๐Ž๐” to our dear soulmate ๐๐„๐๐๐˜ for finding all those great videos and sharing so much info and personal experiences with us! I hope you all liked our cooperation.

“First day” was released as single off “Pictures” one month before the album release, it reached no. 51 in the UK Singles Chart. Apart from Brian the singer Jokate (aka Jo Kate) Benson from Bristol features vocals on the song. Two different versions of the single were put out. One of them includes the radio edit of “First day“ and an extendend version, the other one consists of six remixes plus the video clip.

[...] By the time I reached London, all that was missing [for “Trigger happy hands”] was the music. A few months later, in a serendipitous twist of fate, my friend and German Superstar DJ Timo Maas got back in touch, asking if I would be interested in working on some lyrics and perhaps singing on his new album. I found the skelleted electronic tracks he had sent me quite exiting, and I would eventually end up guesting on three album tracks. One track, however, leaped out of the stereo at me and screamed "sing over me now!". I began to mumble the words I had written that day on the train and they seemed to fit perfectly. So enamoured was I by this happy accident that I contacted Timo immediately to say that I would gladly sing on his new album, but only if he would "donate" said piece of music to the Placebo cause. Thankfully he agreed and a song was born. Now, put your hands in ze air, mรผtterfuckers!"
