๐Œ๐€๐‘๐‚ ๐๐Ž๐‹๐€๐, an English musician, singer, songwriter, record producer, and poet, was born on this day, on ๐’๐ž๐ฉ๐ญ๐ž๐ฆ๐›๐ž๐ซ ๐Ÿ‘๐ŸŽ๐ญ๐ก, ๐Ÿ๐Ÿ—๐Ÿ’๐Ÿ•, and would have turned ๐Ÿ•๐Ÿ’ today

He is known as one of the pioneers of the glam rock movement of the early 1970s with his band ๐“. ๐‘๐ž๐ฑ. Particularly, we know the frizzy-haired musician as a songwriter of ๐Ÿ๐ŸŽ๐“๐‡ ๐‚๐„๐๐“๐”๐‘๐˜ ๐๐Ž๐˜.

In the late 1960s, ๐Œ๐€๐‘๐‚ ๐๐Ž๐‹๐€๐ had risen to fame as the founder and leader of the psychedelic folk band ๐“๐ฒ๐ซ๐š๐ง๐ง๐จ๐ฌ๐š๐ฎ๐ซ๐ฎ๐ฌ ๐‘๐ž๐ฑ with whom he released four critically acclaimed albums. Bolan's March 1971 appearance on the BBC's music show Top of the Pops, wearing glitter on the face, is cited as ๐’•๐’‰๐’† ๐’ƒ๐’†๐’ˆ๐’Š๐’๐’๐’Š๐’๐’ˆ ๐’๐’‡ ๐’•๐’‰๐’† ๐’ˆ๐’๐’‚๐’Ž ๐’“๐’๐’„๐’Œ ๐’Ž๐’๐’—๐’†๐’Ž๐’†๐’๐’•.
T. Rex's 1971 album Electric Warrior, with all songs written by Bolan, has been described as "the album that essentially kick-started the UK glam rock craze."
Bolan died on ๐’๐ž๐ฉ๐ญ๐ž๐ฆ๐›๐ž๐ซ ๐Ÿ๐Ÿ”๐ญ๐ก, ๐Ÿ๐Ÿ—๐Ÿ•๐Ÿ•, at the age of 29 in a car crash two weeks before his 30th birthday. It happened when a car driven by his girlfriend, singer Gloria Jones, struck a tree in southwest London.

In 1977, a memorial stone and bust of Bolan, Marc Bolan's Rock Shrine, was unveiled at the site where he died. His musical influence as guitarist and songwriter was profound; he inspired many later acts over the following decades. As a member of T. Rex, Bolan was posthumously inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2020.

Marc Bolan, born Mark Feld in Hackney, London, always knew he was going to be a pop star, even when he was kid. He was fascinated by early rock'n'roll stars like Eddie Cochran, Little Richard and Elvis and says in the film, "I always knew I was different - right from the start, right from the moment I was born. When I was younger, I certainly thought I was a kind of superior being." Later, like Bowie, he became a master of reinvention - he was first a mod, then a hippyish singer-songwriter, before coming into full bloom as a glittering glam rock superstar.

Aside from his fascination with early rock'n'roll, Marc looked to books - particularly The Lord of the Rings - for inspiration, and also intriguing figures from British history. One man he became obsessed with was Beau Brummell (1788-1840), a fashion icon from Regency England who is credited with establishing the modern men's suit, worn with a necktie, as a means of standard, formal dress. "Ninety-five per cent of my success is the way I look - look and presence is what people pick up on," he says in the film.

[โ€ฆ] In 1967, [the first band Bolan joined, John's Children] released a single Desdemona, which contained the lyric, "Lift up your skirt and fly" - about a witch, Marc claimed, but the line aroused suspicions. The BBC banned the song, and the name of their only album, Orgasm, caused issues in the US, too.

Tyrannosaurus Rex (later shortened to T. Rex), were the headliners of the first-ever Glastonbury festival. [โ€ฆ] Back then, Glastonbury wasn't the huge media event it is now, but it was still a great booking for the band and it secured them a place in British music history.

John Peel was a huge supporter of T. Rex in their early days, and calling Marc "a flower child with a knife up his sleeve" was an observation rather than an insult. He, like many others, noticed that Bolan was fiercely ambitious. [โ€ฆ] Tyrannosaurus Rex became T. Rex, Marc dabbed some glitter on his face, and there began an extraordinary run of impeccable glam rock singles, including Ride a White Swan (their breakthrough hit in 1970) and, all in 1971, Hot Love, Get It On and Jeepster.

Marc feared a premature death - hence he never learned to drive - and he also believed he would die young, once saying: "The thing about success, certainly in the rock'n'roll business, is that it gives you an incredible amount, but what it takes away is irreplaceable and sometimes I get a funny feeling that I shan't be here very long. And I'm not talking in terms of things like success. It frightens me sometimes."
If that wasn't freakish enough, in the film Simon Napier-Bell says the following: "Chet Baker was a hero of his, and James Dean. And I said, 'Well, be careful having James Dean as a hero, because you might end up dying in a Porsche. And he said, 'Oh, I'm just tiny, I'd like to die in a Mini.'"
It was in a Mini that he died, on that tragic night in September 1977.

Dear friends, today we will omit all serious topics. I found some amazing interviews from 2003 and now, I will select only certain excerpts for you that caught my eye.
So what do they relate to?

For me personally, it's a song of my childhood, as well as for the guys from Placebo. It is impossible to count how many nights at home we danced to this song, which my father absolutely adored.
When I first heard the cover by Placebo, I couldn't believe how they remade this song from the disco sound to perfect rock! I still have goosebumps when listening to it and I'm incredibly happy that my favorite band did this cover.

๐Ÿ”ธDaddy Cool is one of the biggest hits of the German disco group Boney M. from the album Take The Heat Off Me (1976).
๐Ÿ”ธPlacebo released Daddy Cool not only on the album Placebo Covers, which was part of the bonus CD Sleeping With Ghosts special edition, but also on the single The Bitter End, both in 2003.
๐Ÿ”ธThe track Daddy Cool was produced by Dimitri Tikovoi.
๐Ÿ”ธIt is interesting that you can hear the Placebo cover in the French comedy "Pรฉdale dure" from 2004.

I doubt there's a Placebo fan who doesn't know Daddy Cool, but since this song is definitely worth it, you can listen to it in both versions.

And now, dear friends, we come to what actually led the boys to record this funny song. I wish you all a wonderful reading.

It's just a song that has been with us forever and that we like to dance to. It doesn't mean we like all the songs by BONEY M., because some ... aren't that good.
Also, this song was a birthday present for STEVE's daughter because he was always such a "Daddy Cool". When we recorded it, it turned out to be pretty good. Moreover, it is the first song where STEVE sings in a duet with BRIAN."

Dear soulmates,
As you may remember, we already shared many great interviews with very special persons connected in some way to Placebo โ€“ photographers, musicians, producers, directors etc. โ€“ done by ๐‘จ๐’๐’‚๐’”๐’•๐’‚๐’”๐’Š๐’š๐’‚ ๐‘ณ๐’๐’ˆ๐’Š๐’๐’๐’—๐’‚ for her ๐๐ฅ๐š๐œ๐ž๐›๐จ ๐’๐ญ๐จ๐ซ๐ฒ ๐๐ซ๐จ๐ฃ๐ž๐œ๐ญ.
As soon as the ๐๐ซ๐จ๐ฃ๐ž๐œ๐ญ is just turning 5, there comes new exciting stuff to celebrate the anniversary

In collaboration with ๐๐ฅ๐š๐œ๐ž๐›๐จ ๐’๐ญ๐จ๐ซ๐ฒ, weโ€™re going to exclusively publish the upcoming interviews immediately, so you have no chance to miss them!
Congratulations and big THANK YOU to Anastasiya for her impressive work full of genuine love to our favourite band!

And now, enjoy the newest ๐ˆ๐๐“๐„๐‘๐•๐ˆ๐„๐– with ๐‡๐€๐˜๐‹๐„๐˜ ๐Œ๐€๐ƒ๐ƒ๐„๐, a documentary photographer who did photo shoots for musicians and bands such as Garbage, Foo Fighters, PJ Harvey and many others. In 1996 she took some pictures of Placebo for ๐‘ต๐‘ด๐‘ฌ.

I had not met the band before, but I had seen them in concert. I certainly listened to their music and I loved their sound, and of course their style. I try not to have a preconceived image of any band before I shoot them, but it's hard when lots of good photos are around not to be influenced, especially if they are the band everyone is talking about โ€“ which they were when I got commissioned to do the shoot. They were all very striking in looks and style, so I knew that not much work would be needed to make them look good.

Can you tell me about the photo shoot. For what print media did you take these pictures?
The commission was a feature for NME, a British weekly newspaper. It was a big deal for me as I was the new kid on the block, but all the other photographers were already busy (it was Britpop). It was a double page feature, and the interview had already been done. I usually try to sit in on the interviews to get to know the band a bit but there was no opportunity for that on this occasion.

Why did you take black and white pictures? Or was it necessary for this certain shoot?
NME was one of the last papers to go fully colour and this feature was scheduled for black and white. Converting colour film to black and white gives poor results, especially if it is going to newsprint, and black and white film has much more range artistically, so if a commission was a black and white shoot I always shot on black and white film. Also we did not have big budgets to work with, so we had to shoot economically. I rolled my own film and processed it and printed it in my bathroom overnight which most of the music news photographers did then to avoid expensive overnight processing lab fees. Of course if Photoshop had been readily available I would have shot colour and processed it digitally. I do think Placebo are a 'black and white' image band though!

What can you say about the location for this session?
It was in Liverpool, an old theatre called the Lomax where the band were playing that evening. The band did not want to go outside, but we did have the run of the whole theatre. I had location lights with me, but they needed power, so in the end it came down to shooting in the only room which had some spare electric sockets. Unfortunately every time I took a shot it fused the whole theatre. The stage crew were very accommodating and obligingly reset the fuse box each time I took a shot, but it did make for a very stilted shoot.

What was the most interesting in working on this photo shoot?
Definitely the chance to meet the band. They were extremely patient but I did not get a great variety of images as the circumstances were so limiting. That is why I put the prints in water afterwards, bent them and shot the effect, so I got a bit more variety for the picture editor to choose from. I think it suited the band to have something out of the ordinary โ€“ I could not have pulled this off with Oasis or Pulp for example โ€“ but it was totally out of necessity rather than a preplanned artistic decision.

What were your impressions from the mutual work with Placebo? Would you like to work with them again?
Despite all the fuss around them at the time they seemed to have their heads screwed on and their feet on the ground. They were quiet and reserved, which was very different to the more boisterous and sensational Britpop bands at the time. They also came over as very private and they were all definitely 'outsiders'. Having said that they were not at all pretentious or difficult, they were very professional and a pleasure to work with. I really liked them and was sorry the shoot had so many technical problems. So yes, it would be great to work with them again and actually have a chance to photograph them under less pressured circumstances.

Brian and Stef explained the meaning of the lyrics pretty well but the song is still open for interpretations.
Brian admits his tendency to destructive love and inability to keep his relationships...
๐Ÿ“ข ๐๐ซ๐ข๐š๐ง: โ€œโ€˜You Donโ€™t Care About Usโ€™ is directed towards me, written from the point of view of someone who I used to be in a relationship with. Thereโ€™s a line in it which says, โ€˜Youโ€™re in the wrong place / Youโ€™re in the back pageโ€™ which is often what I used to do - I used to imagine the end of these things just as they were starting. When you do that, youโ€™re fucked from day one basically, but thatโ€™s often the way I used to conduct my relationships. I think Iโ€™m quite a misunderstood songwriter - all the bile and vitriol and wickedness people believe is directed by me towards other people, but theyโ€™re often directed from other people towards me and Iโ€™m being extremely self-critical.โ€
(๐‘๐‘€๐ธ, ๐ด๐‘ข๐‘”๐‘ข๐‘ ๐‘ก 1998)

๐Ÿ“ข ๐๐ซ๐ข๐š๐ง: "It's about an ex-lover having a furious rant at me for not caring and being wrapped up in my own head. Unfortunately, that's how I used to conduct my relationships: I was always imagining the end just as it was beginning."

๐Ÿ“ข ๐๐ซ๐ข๐š๐ง: It's the poppiest that we've ever been in our lives, it's sort of... it's got a really cheerful melody but it's quite a disturbing song.
Disturbing in what way?
๐Ÿ“ข ๐๐ซ๐ข๐š๐ง: Well, it's kind of... it's sort of somebody ranting at me basically, it's sort of like an ex kind of telling me I'm crap at relationships really which is what all the mental masturbation's about in that song. But it has a total, total pop edge to it, it's kind of got that punk pop thing that 'Nancy Boy' had.

Many of the songs deal with sexuality and they seem to have different gender points of view. Is it just me or are these songs written like that?
๐Ÿ“ข ๐’๐ญ๐ž๐Ÿ๐š๐ง: Definitely. That is the way Brian writes his lyrics sometimes. Like the song "You Don't Care About Us". That is taken from the point of view of somebody talking to Brian. As opposed to him talking to somebody else, actually somebody is asking him, 'This relationship is going wrong. You don't care about us, man.' (laughs) But other people translate it like the kids are going to the adults, 'You don't care about us!' It's weird. They are all coming from all different angles.

The lyrics are inspired by the necessity of having a drudging nine to five job in the modern world, it's a story about not working oneself in an early grave. Brian said that it's โ€œa song about chasing your dreamsโ€ and compared it to Robert Frost's poem, "The road not takenโ€ (see quotes below). In an interview with Sunday Mail he mentioned that it's also kind of an โ€œAmerican Beautyโ€œ thing. โ€œYou can find yourself like the character Kevin Spacey plays, in a mid-life crisis and realising 20 years of his existence has been for nothing, for materialism and no soul."
โ€œSlave to the wageโ€œ samples the intro of "Texas Never Whispers" by the band Pavement. The line โ€œSick and tired of Maggie's farmโ€œ is a reference to the Bob Dylan song โ€œMaggie's farmโ€œ.

The story that is told in the clip is based on a summer job Brian once had, which was shredding documents in a bank. โ€œWe used that as a metaphor for the drudgery of having a nine-to-five in the modern worldโ€, he explained. The video was directed by Howard Greenhalgh, who had already worked on โ€œNancy Boyโ€ and โ€œBruise Pristineโ€ with Placebo before. You can read more about the shooting in the quotes below.
The song was produced by Paul Corkett and Placebo and recorded at Olympic Studios and Townhouse Studios in London. Brian has some painful memories to the recording of the track's vocals: โ€It was the day that I found out that Scott Piering, the legendary plugger and our friend, had died and I was thinking about him that morningโ€.

โ€œSlave to the wageโ€œ was performed live 350 confirmed times. It was first brought on stage on July 20th 2000 in Oxford, UK. This concert started the โ€œBlack market musicโ€ world tour. The song stayed on the setlist when Placebo were touring with their next album โ€œSleeping with ghostsโ€ in 2003/2004 and was also played during the short โ€œOnce more with feelingโ€ tour in 2005. Then it wasn't performed again until 2012. There were some renditions of the song in 2013 and a beautiful acoustic version was recorded at the โ€œMTV Unpluggedโ€ show in London in 2015. After that โ€œSlave to the wageโ€ was a regular part of the โ€œ20 yearsโ€ anniversary tour in 2016/2017. Last time the fans could hear it live was at a festival in Switzerland on July 13th 2018.

I strangely felt his presence.โ€
(Melody Maker, October 20th 2000)

๐Ÿ“ข โ€œIt's a song about chasing your dreams. It's kinda like the Robert Frost poem, "The road less traveled". [sic!] It's basically saying, promoting individuality and saying that you don't have to follow society's rules in order to become a personal success. It often involves a bit of risk taking and courage. But we're certainly living proof of the fact that these decisions that we made when we were very young, we're living proof embodied that the road less traveled can be incredibly fruitful, if you stay true to yourself, if you have the desire to be an individual, if you have the desire and the courage to chase your dreams. If you want to work at a bank, and that gives you a hard-on, then go work for a bank. Or, if you want to be an artist and that gives you a hard-on, be an artist. Don't feel that you have to work at a bank. And if you're prepared to make sacrifices and take risks, if you're lucky, if your karma is good, then these things will payoff in the end. Which I think it's a positive message really.โ€œ
(Vox Online, 2001)

๐Ÿ“ข "The song tells you to be an individual, believe in yourself and have the courage to chase your dreams. If you do, the rewards at the end are tenfold versus doing what your parents tell you to do. Get a good job, get married, have 2.4 children, 1.2 goldfish, 3.6 cars ... To a lot of people, that's the epitome of personal success. Which is why so many people get through a mid-life crisis. People reach a point in their lives and go, "Is this it?"

Run away from all your boredom
Run away from all your whoredom
And wave your worries
And cares goodbye

All it takes is one decision
A lot of guts
A little vision
To wave your worries
And cares goodbye

Sick and tired of Maggie's farm
She's a bitch with broken arms
Your worries and cares
Goodbye

It's a maze for rats to try

Musician and singer-songwriter ๐‘บ๐’•๐’†๐’—๐’† ๐‘ญ๐’๐’“๐’“๐’†๐’”๐’• was born on September 25, 1986 in ๐‘ด๐’๐’…๐’†๐’”๐’•๐’, ๐‘ช๐’‚๐’๐’Š๐’‡๐’๐’“๐’๐’Š๐’‚. Who remembers this special gesture Brian used to make with his left hand? Possibly only older fans will remember and know what I am talking about when I mention the so-called โ€œlimp wristโ€œ or โ€œgay handโ€œ that was characteristic for him in the early days. I found it so damn sexy... โ€“ how about you?

โฉ ๐— ๐—˜๐—”๐—ก๐—œ๐—ก๐—š: Limp wrist is a slang term used towards gay men in reference to how they hold their wrists when they speak. (Urban Dictionary)

Maybe it's strange to feel this way, but this specific move is what I miss most at Placebo concerts nowadays. I understand that Brian stopped doing it as he grew older and didn't want people to focus on his androgyny or sexual orientation any more. And of course I know that everything in life - including ourselves - is constantly changing, but actually I've never been a huge fan of that fact.
Now I want to show you some videos in which you can see what Brian's limp wrist looked like. Some of you may notice this move for the first time, but for some others it will surely awaken some great memories of times long gone. Enjoy watching everyone and please share your opinion on Brian's โ€œgay handโ€œ with us!

The thing about this interview is that Brian could just push the button if he didnโ€™t want to answer the question that appeared on the screen. And well, he did it a couple of times...

But still, there are some brilliant answers โ€“ let us know whatโ€™s your favourite!

Tonight will again be marked by memories and humor.
I found a beautiful interview for you, which Stefan gave to the well-known Polish reporter Robert Sankowski in 1999.
The conversation in which we see the world of Placebo through Stefan's eyes is very nice and funny. So enjoy it with us.

The trick seems to be well known and played before by at least a few artists. We change into women's clothes, put on some makeup, give a few ambiguous interviews - and media attention is guaranteed. Placebo's leader Brian Molko plays this game exceptionally skilfully. And it constantly intrigues British journalists. With the bass player of the band, Stefan Olsdal, it's different. This one leaves no doubt. Instead of a certain mystery, he prefers to openly admit that he is more attracted to boys than girls ...
Oh, the decadent world of rock'n'roll .../.../

๐‘บ๐’•๐’†๐’‡๐’‚๐’: "Oh yes! We didn't get along well with our previous drummer, Robert. We were all not satisfied with what we were doing. After all, playing in a band should be a lot of fun. You cannot go to rehearsals feeling like you are going to the next shift at the factory. And that's what playing Placebo was like. When Steve showed up, everything changed.
He brought a lot of life to the band. Both as a human being and as a musician. He is a very talented drummer. He plays great in many different styles. He brought a bit of a black feeling to Placebo. Although you cannot see it, I'm convinced that some African blood flows in his veins ..."

Today we do it on a more democratic basis. We are a real band. Hence the change in approach to the media .. /.../

Dear soulmates, do you long to know the story with Billy Corgan? Perhaps in the end I will conjure a smile on your face when I share it here for you:

"I'm really bad at jokes. I'm not a very good storyteller. One time, though- and this isn't actually a joke, as such- I went up to Billy Corgan very drunk, with tour laminates clipped on my nipples, and asked him whether his approach to music had changed since he shaved his head. He wasn't amused."

It was out in all of Europe, except for the United Kingdom and Norway, with The Never-Ending Why being released in these two countries a week prior, on September 14th, 2009, as a second single.
The song was recorded in 2008, produced by David Bottrill, mixed by Alan Moulder at Assauld & Battery Studio, London, and mastered by John Davis at Metropolis Studios, London.

๐Ÿ“ One of the B-sides, ๐…๐”๐‚๐Š ๐”, is a cover of a song by electro/alternative rock band ๐‘จ๐’“๐’„๐’‰๐’Š๐’—๐’†. ๐Ÿ“ Ashtray Heart is quite untypical song because it was written by Brian not with Stefan but with his friends, Steven Ludwin and Jordan Page, with whom he was on holidays in Nicaragua. Together, they were writing kind of pop songs for other artists, so firstly, Ashtray Heart wasnโ€™t supposed to become Placebo song. After all, Brian changed his mind and even decided to put it as a second song on the album to highlight the contrast in the way it sounds.

Here you can listen to ๐‘ฉ๐’“๐’Š๐’‚๐’ telling the story:

๐Ÿ“ข โ€œEach new album starts as a reaction to its predecessor, which is the biggest influence of all because it determines exactly what we do not want to do. With that in mind, and with a little distance for perspectiveโ€™s sake, Stef and Idecided that โ€˜Medsโ€™ was a very claustrophobic and monochrome album that offered hardly any hope to the listener. Thus it seemed logical to make a new album bursting with colour and optimism. Having said that, whether we did so or not remains up for debate.โ€œ
